An Aspiring Author's First Chapter: A Novel Three Years In The Making.
Chapter One
“We lost sight of our humanity; I refuse to be used as a tool anymore. Immortality was something we should’ve never reached for.” -Final Log by Head Assistant Researcher Quinn Xiatu: Terminated. - End report: Devlin 2470.
Vontier’s blood pumped; the feeling of the adrenaline would never get old. The excitement, the rush of the brisk, cool air through your hair, the sweat beading down your head, and the feeling of the cold metal while firing a pistol. Dead leaves left behind by the fall crunched underneath the weight of Vontier’s thick boots. He laughed maniacally through the thick fog which he could just barely see through, the noise muffled by a near impenetrable black mask worn by Vontier.
He reached the treeline, the terrain quickly changed from a lush, soft green trees and grass to a dusty, rough gray of bleak fields and a rough wasteland. He panted as he sprinted for his ATMV (all terrain Militia vehicle); if he could make it to the vehicle, the hollow point rounds pre-loaded in its turret would shred through the pursuing monsters. As the fog produced from the Predators closed in on Vontier, he reached the vehicle, which sat plainly in the middle of a field. Quickly, he climbed onto the ATMV roof and mounted the turret. The fog had completely enveloped the ATMV: the growls of the Predators echoed through the field as they circled their prey. Vontier’s breath shook, his grip tense. He could feel his heavy and warm breath on his cheeks, reflecting off of the wall of his mask. The fog’s too thick. There has to be at least two adults here. Vontier thought to himself nervously as his thumb anxiously rubbed the grip of the turret. He held the turret in one hand and his MAT-27 in the other, slowly turning in circles, waiting for one of the horrid monsters to pounce. Sweat beaded down his arms to his hands, the handles now slick. Vontier's eyes darted back and forth, attempting to find a glimpse of movement within the suffocating fog. Growl. One of the Predators grew impatient and pounced on the hood of the ATMV. The hood instantly creaked and caved in slightly under the weight of the beast. Its teeth bared, mouth dripping with saliva. Its eyes were bloodshot and its fur thick and sharp. The monster was greeted with the barrel of a machine gun. A snarl was let out from the creature as it stared its death in the face. Vontier smirked as the turret spun to life; the Predator was torn to shreds in seconds, unable to react in time. Clunk! A second Predator jumped behind him ready to consume Vontier; his pistol was faster. Bang! Bang! His shots rang out, adding to the unfolding chaos. Two down. Suddenly, the world turned upside down for Vontier; the final Predator had rammed the vehicle, flipping it. Vontier flew off the turret as a result of the impact. He braced his fall with his arm, expertly taking the landing. His gun thudded in the dirt next to him. “Dusts- That has to be a mutant,” Vontier groaned, now sprawled on the ground a few meters away from the ATMV. The Predator jumped onto the side of the flipped vehicle. It was abnormally large, which meant a larger core, it also meant thicker skin. The mutant Predator stalked towards Vontier slowly, analyzing him cautiously after witnessing the death of its two comrades. The eyes, Vontier thought with haste. They’re still weak points. Rolling to his right, Vontier snatched his pistol from the dirt, bracing his legs to protect his body, he turned to the Predator which was now running full speed towards him, aware of the dangerous weapon. Bang! Bang! Bang! The bullets missed the eyes, hitting the reinforced fur of the monster and simply glancing off. The Predator wasted no time closing the distance, taking advantage of Vontier's immobility. Expertly, Vontier used his legs to protect himself from the monster's claws as it swiped at his chest before grabbing the monster’s scruff with his free hand, holding the beast in place. Then, without skipping a beat, he shoved his pistol into the Predator’s eye, immediately piercing the membrane and pulled the trigger, emptying the seven remaining bullets into its head. The monster collapsed onto Vontier, falling still immediately. Vontier rolled the corpse off of him breathing a sigh of relief “Dusting mutants,” Vontier exhaustedly grumbled.
Slowly, Vontier picked himself out of the dust and limped over to the flipped vehicle, his left leg broken and his right in a mess from the Predator. Cautiously, he climbed onto the side and retrieved the gray medkit strapped to its side. Opening the kit, Vontier reached inside and grabbed a green stim and an old rag held within the box. “This is going to hurt,” Vontier groaned, stuffing the dirty rag into his mouth. He paused, closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and steeled himself. Here we go, He thought before stabbing his mutilated leg with the stim. The leg bubbled, bulged, and expanded as the flesh regrew at an alarming rate. The leg crunched and grinded as the mysterious liquid in the stim worked to repair the broken bones. It bled as it grew to an abnormal size; like a fat chunk of flesh poorly grafted onto one’s leg, the tissue oozed then shrunk to normal size. Vontier’s eyes watered as he tried and failed not to scream in agony from the pain of the leg. Finally, the leg stopped bubbling and the pain ceased. He looked down at his leg; the once-ruined limb now completely mended and pristine. Vontier spat out the rag, wiped his eyes dry, and let out a sigh of relief. “By the Fall, I hate those dusting stims,” he viciously cursed out loud, his head leaned back. Vontier sighed heavily and collected himself, his heart still beating fast though it was slowing down. He quickly assessed the new situation he was in. “An hour from base, three monster corpses, and a flipped ATMV. Fun,” he sighed. Climbing into the sideways vehicle, Vontier radioed to his guild for support. Suddenly, the adrenaline wore off and the exhaustion hit him like a meteor shower. Well, an hour-long nap would be nice, Vontier thought groggily to himself as he drifted off to sleep, slouched in the sideways seat of the ATMV.

My take on how Fierce Deity was sealed inside the cursed mask. Chapter 11 of 'A Deity's Son'.
Content Warning: Behind the scene death, description of the body (not too graphic), wings being removed.
Notes: FD has the gift of seeing already faught battles through spilt blood.
“Link? Link?!” Fierce went around the makeshift town of tents filled with Hylian soldiers. He made his way to Hylia’s tent and opened it up, hoping that Link was there with her. Of course he wasn’t.
“Fierce, what’s wrong?”
He growled at the realization. “He left! We explicitly told him to stay put until we had a full proof plan. We need to find him before he does something stupid, like play hero against Demise.”
Hylia grabbed her hooded cloak as well as her bow with an infinite amount of light arrows. “Demise’s pet would love nothing more than to get his dirty hands on Link.”
“We must hurry then. They have not stayed in one place for more than a few days at a time.” He walked out of her tent and whistled. A large six legged, black horse galloped to his side. He mounted the beast and stuck his hand out for his sister so he could help her up behind him. Once she was, he spurred his horse on. They knew where Demise had recently been and that was their first stop.
They weren’t there.
Fierce and Hylia traveled the whole land looking for Link and would not stop until they found him. Their hope for finding him alive decreased everyday, but they still hoped for the best. After over three weeks, that hope too was fading.
They happened to stumble across an abandoned castle ruins and at first glimpse, thought they met another dead end. That was until someone started clapping from the third story where what used to be a window and now an open room was. “I was starting to get bored waiting for you two to get here. It took you long enough.”
Hylia slid off the back of the horse, never taking her eyes off the person in front of her. “Ghirahim, where is Link? I demand you release him.”
“You are in no position to make demands, Goddess.” The Demon Lord twirled a black dagger between his fingers.
“Where is Demise?” Fierce asked as he also dismounted his horse.
“If it isn’t the runt of the litter, Fierce Deity.” Demise slowly walked over and stood near his pet. His smile said a thousand words. “Are you looking for Link? Hylians are so predictable and stupid. I can’t understand what you see in them. This one does have a stronger spirit about him though. Made things fun.”
“If you have hurt him.” Hylia took a few steps closer. “I will end you.”
From somewhere behind the walls, a voice rang out. “Hylia! Get out of here! Fierce, get her out of here!”
Demise told Ghirahim something, leaving the siblings to talk. Fierce glared at his older brother. “What have you done to him?”
“What haven’t we done, is a better question. Let me show you.” There was the sound of chains and something being dragged.
Fierce could smell it before he saw it. Blood. There was so much of it. They watched as Demise flung something over the edge and hooked it to an exposed beam of wood. It was Link. His green tunic was more red than green, red cloak was in shreds around his thinned shoulders. He looked nothing like he had just a few weeks ago. Crimson liquid was still dripping from his freshly cut throat onto the ground below. He could see the bruising around the blue eyes that were partly open, showing his last emotions. The once thicker muscles were thinned and bones were more prominent for them to see. White webbed lines traced across exposed skin and only one person was able to do that.
It took Hylia a few moments to register the sight in front of her and when it did, Fierce’s heart broke not only for himself, but for her. She screamed and put her hands over her mouth. Fierce spun her around quickly from the sight and held her close. “This is your fault. You were supposed to help him. Supposed to save him. He is dead because of you!”
Fierce took that blame upon himself. He had told Link to stay put due to Demise playing baiting games. Unfortunately Link took the bait and paid for it with his life. Demise’s goal was to get Fierce and Hylia to him, away from everyone else. He still didn’t agree with Hylians helping with the sibling’s war, but Link loved Hylia and wouldn't sit on the sidelines. Fierce charged himself with the care of Link, something he had just failed at.
He ran his fingers through the golden hair of his sister’s. He kissed the top of her head as she sobbed into his armored chest. “I’ll make it right. I can’t bring him back, but I’ll give you the opportunity you need to seal Demise.”
She sniffled. “He will kill you, Fierce. You know that he wants you out of the way since I am not as strong as he is.”
“He won’t kill me, but I will wish he had.” Demise had a plan for him and told him a few details of what it was. Did he want to do it? No. This was going to be the most painful thing he ever did, but Hylia couldn’t do this without the distraction. “I’m so sorry, be ready when the time comes.” He kissed her head one more time and his heart raced.
When his sister’s fingers let go of his silver armor, he walked towards his older brother. He unclipped his blade, holding it with both hands, eyes locked on Demise. He needed to fight them just enough that it wasn’t obvious that he wasn’t giving the fight his all. He needed their guard down and he desperately needed this plan to work or else the world was going to suffer.
Ghirahim unclasped his cloak, allowing it to disappear in a flash of diamonds. He twirled a dagger between his fingers and held his thin sword in his other hand. “The favorite son has come to play.”
“Hold your tongue, demon.” Fierce demanded.
The Demon Lord growled at him before he flicked his long and pointed tongue at him. He disappeared in a flash of diamonds and predictable reappeared behind him.
Fierce fought violently against his brother's pet, showing his strength, speed and his nature for battle. He used his wings as shields since they were almost indestructible. The only area that was weak was the base of the white wings.
He wasn't ready for what came next, but Ghirahim was wearing out from the encounter. The next time the demon appeared at his back, he let him strike. The thin blade sliced across the back of his knees and in the next second, five black daggers were flying at him with a trail of red magic behind them. His left wing swatted two away, his blade deflected another. He allowed the remaining two to get past his defenses. One of those daggers went into his left thigh as the other embedded itself just above his armor, under his armpit.
He hissed in pain since it actually did hurt, but in a real fight he would have left them were they stuck. This wasn't a real fight though. He reached for the one under his arm so he could pull it, only to have a sword rake over his armored chest and across his unprotected upper arm.
He curled his wing around himself so he could still pose as if he was in the fight. That was when Demise stepped forward and summoned lightning down on him. The metal in and on him sparked and made the effect much more unbearable. That was something he didn't have to fake. He dropped his Helix sword and his hands continued to twitch with the pulsing electricity.
Demise was right next to him when he kicked Fierce to the ground. He stepped on Fierce's back with one foot and grabbed one of his white wings near the base. Fierce knew this was going to happen, but he still thrashed under his brother's weight. Ghirahim walked over with a smirk, dagger in hand and made the first cut.
Fierce screamed out in pain as the left wing's bone snapped in half, then the final cut was made to take it off. Searing white pain engulfed his nerves, blocking out everything else outside of the uncontrollable pain caused by the bone, skin and muscles being ripped from his body.
When he felt Demise grab the other wing, he nearly gave up on the whole thing so he didn't have to go through with it. When he made it to his hands and knees, he caught the glimpse of Link hanging lifelessly. This was on him and he needed to do this. He didn't feel the skin or muscles get cut, but he felt the bone shatter, then twisted to break it off. The jagged ends of the bones dug into his skin when he made the remaining bits retreat to under the skin of his back between his shoulder blades.
Ghirahim handed something to Demise before he took Fierce's hair into his grip, wrenching his head back and forcing him up into his knees fully.
Demise let out an ominous chuckle. "Baby brother, it seems the table has turned with who gets put in a mask this time. Tell Majora I said hello. I'm sure he has missed you."
A wooden mask appeared in Fierce's line of sight. It radiated darkness from it. It wasn't just going to hold him, but it was cursed.
"Oh and enjoy the visions too." Demise added. Only then did Fierce notice the unnatural crimson color on the inside of the mask. Blood. Link's blood. He was going to see every second of Link's torture and ending. That was worse than his wings being removed by far.
He screamed as the mask fused to his face, then absorbed his being inside of it with his sword.

A Clash of Kings - 12 DAENERYS I (pages 170-184)
Dany rides through the desert on a horse with no name, finds an abandoned city, and unlocks Jorah's backstory. Jhogo makes contact with Qarth.
-
"Why should I fear Pono?" Dany objected. "He was Drogo's ko, and always spoke me gently." "Ko Pono spoke you gently," Ser Jorah Mormont said. "Khal Pono will kill you. He was the first to abandon Drogo. Ten thosuand warriors went with him. You have a hundred." No, Dany thought, I have four. The rest are women, old sick men, and boys whose hair had never been braided.
He was nice when you were his boss's wife, now you're just some lady who once tried to steal away his right to rape and slave as he liked. He's not even a bloodrider duty bound to see you safely to the dosh khaleen.
"They are mine," she said fiercely. They had been born from her faith and her need, given life by the deaths of her husband and unborn son and the maegi Mirri Maz Duur.
hmmmm... *reassesses theory on "the souls of the sacrifices used to wake the dragons being recycled into dragon souls" now with the idea that one of the dragons is ensouled by Mirri directly and not by Viserys.*
(Like, thematically and by naming convention it would make sense to be Viserys' soul, but on the other hand, he's been dead for donkey's yonks by this point.)
Her hair had all burned away in Drogo's pyre, so her handmaidens garbed her in the skin of the hrakkar Drogo had slain, the white lion of the Dothraki sea. Its fearsome head made a hood to cover her naked scalp, its pelt a cloak that flowed across her shoulders and down her back.
*gasp* Kimba! No!!! We were robbed by the show.
Their mounts subsisted on the tough brown devilgrass that grew in clumps at the base of rocks and dead trees. Dany sent outriders ranging ahead of the column but they found neither wells nor springs, only bitters pools, shallow and stagnant, shrinking in the hot sun.
yeah, sounds you are in 'dig for potable water' territory now. If you had cloth to filter it, you could filter the stagnant water, and use the dead trees to boil it clean, but in a desert like that, surface water is not what you want to be holding out hope for. You gotta dig.
"Aegon's dragons were named for the gods of Old Valyria," she told her bloodriders one morning after a long night's journey. "Visenya's dragon Vhagar, Rhaenys had Meraxes, and Aegon rode Balerion, the Black Dread. -"
Huh, neat. So named after as in those were the same names, or named after like Drogon after Drogo, with small changes?
... RIP Doreah.
Dany went to Ser Jorah one morning as they made camp amidst a jumble of black wind-scoured stones. "Are we lost?" she asked him. "Does this waste have no end to it?"
I imagine traveling exclusively by night makes navigating by stars easier, but there's no mention of it, are they legit just following the comet? How long is it going to be in the sky for? How long has it been there already?
Dany looked at the horizon with despair. they had lost a third of their number, and still the waste stretched before them, bleak and red and endless.
Not gonna lie, that's actually a better survival rate than I was expecting.
How long the city had been deserted she could not know, but the white walls, so beautiful from afar, were cracked and crumbling when seen up close. Inside was a maze of narrow, crooked alleys. The buildings were pressed close, their facades blank, chalky, windowless. Everything was white, as if the people who lived here had known nothing of color.
It would be interesting to know if the building were always only white because it reflects the light and heat, or if there was coloured paints and pigments on the walls long ago which have been long sun-bleached to whiteness, or if the Dothraki who once invaded stole everything of colour.
"What shall we seek, Khaleesi?" asked Jhogo. "Whatever there is," Dany answered. "Seek for other cities, living or dead. Seek for caravans and people. Seek for rivers and lakes and the great salt sea. Find how far this waste extends before us, and what lies on the other side. When I leave this place, I do not mean to strike out blind again. I will know where I am bound, and how best to get there."
Good girl, now that you've had the chance to stop and think you're thinking smart.
Rakharo was back first. ... Dany gave him charge of a dozen of her strongest men, and set them to pulling up the plaza to get to the earth beneath. If devilgrass could grow between the paving stones, other grasses would grow when the stones were gone. They had wells enough, no lack of water. Given seed, they could make the plaza bloom. Aggo was back next. ... Dany thanked him and told him to repair the gates. If enemies had crossed the waste to destroy these cities in ancient days, they might well come again. "If so we might be ready," she declared.
Somewhere in the multiverse, Dany and her khalasar stayed there, in their city of bones and grew into a small but prosperous little community. And no one hurt or betrayed or enslaved them ever again.
"ugly humped creatures that dwarfed any horse." CAMELS!
The pale man with the blue lips replied in guttural Dothraki, (...) The bald man with the jewels in his nose answered in the Valyrian of the Free Cities, (...) The woman in the lacquered wooden mask said in the Common Tongue of the Seven Kingdoms, (...)
That's interesting* each of the three speaking to Dany in a different language, like they're trying to appeal to a certain aspect of her through their use of the languages they share with her.
*New drinking game, y'all take a sip anytime the Reader says "that's interesting" XD

bit of semi-egotistical navel gazing but man, I do not give myself enough credit for the things I can do.
so: With the new house we have painted, ripped up the carpet, removed the tacking, etc, etc, etc getting the render off the garage walls, demoed the cabinetry in there, patched the cracks in the back steps, patched the tiles, regrouted the bathroom, removed extraneous coax cabling everywhere, dowel patched the floor holes and stain-matched, puttied, stripped the vinyl tiles, removed adhesive, resanded, relocated the NBN outlet, repaired and remortared the hearthstone, repaired the sliding door lock, repaired the shower screen, removed the laundry door, stripped wallpaper, fixed the bathroom tap, mounted a new toilet roll holder, removed and patched the eight billion geriatric grip handles, mounted new storage in the laundry and bathroom closets, modified the laundry cabinet sink for new shutoffs, ripped out faulty range hood and installed new one, had a bit of a pain in the arse with the laundry waste (found out there was a non standard piping) ripped that out, put in new 50mm and a new P trap, remortared the bathroom tiles and patched any holes so we can kick the reno down the road and currently in the process of repainting bathroom tile (for same reason) thing is, apart from the painting....that’s been me.
Just me. Obviously there’s shit I don’t touch like electrical and copper piping, so we got trades in for the whole house rewire and the new shutoffs, solar, etc but even then I’ve been organising and talking to the tradies ‘cos they can’t BS me (most of my uncles are tradies) This is NOT to besmirch  His Lordship’s work!  He painted - and that was a big fucking job. Five rooms and a massive wraparound hallway, walls, ceilings and cornices as well as masking and sanding and washing prep - and due to the nature of his work as opposed to mine has been able to be on site to meet & greet the tradies (especially at bumfuck o’clock) and get them all pointed to where they need to go, but jesus christ I know how to do a lot of stuff. I’m awesome.

Ventilation by Exhaust Fans
An exhaust fan is a mechanical ventilation device that helps to draw out stale and impure air from your home and bring in fresh air, thereby improving the quality of indoor air. Exhaust fans are typically ducted to the exteriors of your house, through which bad indoor air can effectively be removed from your living space.
Exhaust fans are classified into various types, mainly depending on the type of mount and the location where you need to install the fans. The different types are:
Ceiling Mounted Exhaust Fans: As the name suggests, ceiling exhaust fans are those which are installed in the ceiling. Such fans expel stale air from your home upwards through the roof. The fan is connected to ducting, which is exhausted outside the home via an external vent, like a roof cap or soffit exhaust vent.
Inline Exhaust Fans: Unlike ceiling exhaust fans that are installed directly into the ceiling, inline exhaust fans are typically mounted in-between ducting, hence the name inline fan. For instance, if you wanted to ventilate an area that did not have clearance or space for a ceiling mount fan, you would make use of inline exhaust fans to ventilate such areas. The exhaust fan would be placed in between the ductwork and the stale air would travel through the ducts and ultimately be expelled from your home. Since inline fans are not mounted directly to the ceiling, they are very quiet. When installing an inline fan, to reduce noise, we recommend using an insulated flex duct that is at least eight feet long from the intake port on the ceiling to the inline fan. Inline exhaust fans are ideal for exhausting areas or rooms where you cannot, or do not wish to install the exhaust fan directly. Since these types of exhaust fans are mounted in remote areas, they are also referred to as remote mounted exhaust fans. Inline exhaust fans can either be single-port (exhausting from a single area) or multi-port (exhausting from multiple areas).
Wall Mounted Exhaust Fans: These exhaust fans are installed on walls. Since they are installed on exterior walls of the home and not on interior walls, the stale air has a direct route to the outside of your home and thus no duct work is required in installing these exhaust fans.
Combination Exhaust Fans: Exhaust fans are also available as combination units. You have the choice of a fan-light combination where the exhaust fan provides illumination as well, or heat-fan-light combination wherein you get a heater, light and ventilating fan all in a single device.
Exterior Remote Mounted Exhaust Fans: While most other exhaust fans are installed inside your home and push stale air out, exterior remote mounted fans are installed outside your home and pull out stale indoor air instead of pushing it out. The main benefit of these exhaust fans is that regardless of however noisy they are, most of the noise remains outside your home.
Kitchen Range Exhaust Fans: These fans are mounted inside the range hood over your kitchen stove. Such fans not only help to rid your kitchen of stale air but also help to expel bad odors and reduce moisture levels in your cooking area.
These several types of exhaust fans can be used for complete ventilation of your bilding including intermittent local ventilation for baths, kitchens, dryer rooms; continuous whole building ventilation, and for exhausting hard-to-air spaces such as crawl spaces, attics, and basements.
Canada Blower exhaust fans are very effective at ventilating your home and other living spaces. Without proper ventilation, the air inside your home can get filled with harmful contaminants and disease causing pathogens.
Pollutants such as pesticides, harmful gases, smoke, pet dander, lead, asbestos, dust mites, paint fumes, grease etc get released into indoor air due to daily activities such as cooking, smoking, burning fuel, bathing, renovating etc. In addition to these pollutants, activities such as bathing, cooking, and washing also release excess moisture in the air and make indoor air extremely humid. If not ventilated adequately, these added pollutants and increased moisture levels can decrease the quality of indoor air greatly, thereby leading to various problems such as:
Health problems including asthma, allergies, nose bleeds, skin rashes, headaches, nausea, and other breathing disorders. In fact, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, a large percentage of the over 20 million annual asthma cases in the US alone can be attributed to bad indoor air quality.
Split, warped and rotted furniture due to excess humidity.
Cracked and peeling paint on the walls.
Formation of fungus, mold spores, and mildew, which in turn lead to severe health problems.
Thus, by using exhaust fans to ventilate your building efficiently and completely, thereby improving indoor air quality, you can avoid of all these problems ventilating.com fanblower.com highpressureblower.net industrialblowerfan.com industrialfanblower.net industrialfanblower.com pressureblower.net northernindustrialsupplycompany.com industrialpressureblower.com tenderall.com chicagoblowercanada.com cbblower.com buffaloblower.com buffalofan.com nis-co.com canadianblower.com olegsystems.com canadablower.com abbblower.com acmefan.net industrialblower.net fansandblowers.net americanblower.net barryfan.com cincinnatifan.net canadafans.com barryfan.net.
When sizing a Canada Blower exhaust fan that does not open directly to the outside but is ducted, it is important to ensure that the exhaust fan has the capability to move stale air throughout the duct and ultimately to the outside. Here, we first need to understand what static pressure and equivalent duct length is.
Inside every duct, there is a constant pressure being exerted at any point from all directions. When an exhaust fan moves air through the duct, the air counters resistance from this pressure which is known as static pressure. Thus, an exhaust fan has to have the ability to overcome the static pressure in a duct so as to effectively duct stale air to the outside of your home. This can be done by calculating the equivalent duct length of any duct.

Leaves
The man glances up at the security camera and motions you a bit further back into the alley. The hood of his overcoat is pulled down nearly over his eyes, but there's something odd about the way it sits on his head. If you didn't know better, you'd wonder if it was covering horns.
"Do you have the stuff?" you say, which sounds a lot less cool than when you were practicing it in your head on the way over, but fortunately the stranger does not seem to notice. Apparently satisfied that you are out of the camera's range, he is unbuttoning the coat, doing something complicated with his fingers over each buttonhole, and now it is falling open, and there, against the dark green velvet of the lining, you see them.
Leaves. Row after row of leaves, leaves in every shade of green and orange and yellow, colors bleeding into each other around the veins, so bright and vibrant they might have just been plucked.
You know you are staring, but you can't help it. You haven't seen this many leaves together since the blight of '27. In fact, it's been a very long time since you've seen any leaves at all. The CO2 scrubbers lining the sidewalks are smooth, utilitarian things, and while they did have decorative leaves attached for a while, the city eventually removed them in order to make the Amazon logos on the sides more plainly visible. In some of the more affluent neighborhoods across the river, they can afford to have sculptures of trees. But these are the real thing, staring back at you from the stranger's coat, and in this moment you think they are the most beautiful thing you've ever seen.
In exchange for a handful of leaves you promise the stranger the life of your firstborn child, on the day it turns one year old. You've just had a vasectomy this past week, but he doesn't need to know that. The leaves seem almost warm in your hands as you clutch them to your chest, hurrying past dilapidated townhouses that seem to loom higher in the gathering twilight. You are nervous about being seen with contraband, but unlike the stranger you did not come prepared with a stealthy overcoat, and you are afraid of damaging the leaves by shoving them into your pockets.
At the corner of Elwood and Main a police dog raises its robotic head from where it has been lapping at a dish of oil and begins to trot after you. There is almost no one else out at this hour, your fellow citizens having actually heeded the air quality warnings, and you begin to panic. The dog cannot possibly be following anyone else. On an impulse you cut abruptly to the right, up a small flight of stairs into the park, and you can hear the metallic footfalls behind you suddenly quicken in response. You own footfalls seem terribly loud on the park's concrete surface, but all the children there are all wearing VR headsets and filtration masks and cannot see or hear you, and are arranged at public terminals in a neat grid pattern so that it's easy to move between them. The dog pauses for a moment to raise its leg against a terminal so that the RFID tag mounted on its belly can log a potential hostile in the area, and you cut left this time, down another alley, hoping this time you might lose it.
But you should have known it was too late. The city knows that you're here now, and the AI-powered fire escapes that the police department spent fifty million dollars installing last summer are unfurling themselves from the walls in a sudden blaze of red light and orders to stop in a dozen overlapping languages. You are running now, as fast as you can, as fast as you ever have, but the fire escape's railings are unfolding into terrible metal fingers that stab after you, and the end of the alley is there and you can see the streetlights glowing in the gap beyond and oh my god you are not going to make it. It's too late to worry about saving anything now, and in a frenzy you began cramming the leaves into your mouth, biting and chewing and feeling all those colors come apart against your teeth and spill over your tongue and scratch your throat as you swallow. You're almost out now and the leaves fill your mouth and you reach out a hand to the light and the fire escape tears free from the building with a terrible shriek and spears you like a fish and you slide across the pavement and your blood sprays over the lost dog posters and housecleaning ads plastering the nearest lamp post and you lie there in a twisted pile of metal and guts and all is very still.
You watch as your lifeblood runs away down the storm drain. Fragments of leaves still cling to your lips, and as you feel them there, you smile. You are dying, but that's fine. That's perfectly alright. In springtime, you will rise again.

Kitchen of Elegance: Elevate Your Culinary Space with Luxury Hobs and Cooker Hoods
A kitchen is more than just a place to prepare meals; it is the heart of the home, where functionality meets style and comfort. When it comes to creating a kitchen that exudes elegance, luxury hobs and cooker hoods play a pivotal role. These high-end appliances not only enhance the cooking experience but also add a touch of sophistication to your culinary space. Let’s explore how investing in top-tier hobs and cooker hoods can transform your kitchen into a haven of luxury and style.

The Essence of Elegance in Kitchen Design
Elegance in a kitchen is achieved through a harmonious blend of design, functionality, and high-quality materials. Luxury hobs and cooker hoods are essential components in this equation, offering both aesthetic appeal and exceptional performance. These appliances are crafted with precision, incorporating advanced technology and premium materials to deliver superior results.
Luxury Hobs: The Heart of Gourmet Cooking
Luxury hobs are more than just cooking surfaces; they are the centerpiece of a sophisticated kitchen. These hobs come in various styles and configurations, each designed to cater to the needs of discerning chefs and home cooks alike.
Induction Hobs: Induction hobs are renowned for their rapid heating capabilities and energy efficiency. They use electromagnetic fields to heat pots and pans directly, resulting in faster cooking times and precise temperature control. The sleek, smooth surface of induction hobs also adds a modern touch to any kitchen.
Gas Hobs: For those who prefer the traditional cooking experience, luxury gas hobs offer unmatched control over flame intensity. High-end gas hobs feature robust burners, precision knobs, and durable grates, ensuring reliable performance and a professional-grade cooking experience.
Ceramic Hobs: Ceramic hobs combine style with practicality, offering a smooth glass surface that is easy to clean and maintain. These hobs are available in various sizes and configurations, allowing you to customize your cooking space according to your needs.
Combi Hobs: Combining the best of both worlds, combi hobs feature a mix of induction and gas or electric cooking zones. This versatility allows you to enjoy the benefits of multiple cooking methods in one sleek appliance.
Cooker Hoods: The Unsung Heroes of Kitchen Elegance
Cooker hoods, or range hoods, are essential for maintaining a clean and pleasant cooking environment. They effectively remove smoke, odors, and excess moisture from the air, ensuring that your kitchen remains fresh and inviting. Luxury cooker hoods are designed to complement high-end hobs, offering both functionality and style.
Wall-Mounted Hoods: These hoods are mounted on the wall above the cooking area and are a popular choice for their sleek design and efficiency. Wall-mounted hoods come in various styles, including angled, chimney, and flat, allowing you to choose one that best fits your kitchen’s design.
Island Hoods: Ideal for kitchens with a central cooking island, island hoods are suspended from the ceiling and provide effective ventilation for open-plan spaces. These hoods often feature contemporary designs and advanced features, such as LED lighting and touch controls.
Built-In Hoods: For a seamless look, built-in hoods are integrated into the cabinetry or the cooking surface itself. These hoods are discreet yet powerful, offering a sleek appearance while maintaining excellent performance.
Downdraft Hoods: Downdraft hoods are an innovative option for kitchens where traditional hoods might not be suitable. These hoods are installed in the countertop and rise up when needed, providing effective ventilation without compromising the kitchen’s aesthetics.
Choosing the Right Luxury Hobs and Cooker Hoods
When selecting luxury hobs and cooker hoods, consider the following factors to ensure you make the right choice for your kitchen:
Size and Configuration: Choose appliances that fit your kitchen layout and cooking style. For hobs, consider the number of burners or cooking zones you need. For cooker hoods, ensure the size and power are adequate for your cooking area.
Material and Finish: High-quality materials such as stainless steel, glass, and ceramic not only enhance the appearance of your appliances but also ensure durability and ease of maintenance.
Features and Technology: Look for advanced features such as touch controls, programmable settings, and efficient filtration systems. These elements contribute to a more enjoyable and efficient cooking experience.
Aesthetic Integration: Select appliances that complement your kitchen’s overall design. Luxury hobs and cooker hoods should blend seamlessly with your cabinetry and countertops, creating a cohesive and elegant look.
Conclusion
Investing in luxury hobs and cooker hoods is an investment in both style and functionality. These high-end appliances enhance your cooking experience while elevating the overall aesthetics of your kitchen. By choosing the right combination of hobs and cooker hoods, you can create a culinary space that embodies elegance and sophistication, making every meal preparation a delightful experience.
