Antique walnut Victorian Davenport

The davenport come in for restoration ,after being passed down through the family. The Davenport belong the daughter now and was once owned by her grandmother. The Davenport was in a tried state but all their apart from a couple of veneer repairs and a missing caster wheel.

The trouble with period walnut is it often blisters the veneers as it dries out, this had happened in places and would require to be ironed down before the polishing was done. After all repairs were carried out the Davenport poet was cleaned and then French polished. Along with a red leather fitted to the top. As she always remembered seeing it with this colour on it as a child. Inside the Davenport is fitted out for envelopes and ink well .

A very nice antique walnut tallboy (chest on chest )from around 1740 come in for some restoration and conservation. The walnut tallboy come in with damage to the carcass veneers and some damage to the draw fronts. The overall finish of the tallboy was in a reasonable condition and the finish underneath the dirt was ok. This pace of furniture would need conservation rather than a complete clean and French polish.

The first job was to repair the carcass runners, these had badly worn out down to the age and the pine runners with the harder oak draws runners wearing them down over the years. The draw runners were replaced at the same time . Then my attention turned down to the walnut veneers on the draws and carcass . The damaged veneers were replaced and the new veneers were cut and fitted. After being cleaned and sanded I applied coat of yellow stain to colour match nearer to the colour of the original tallboy. After applying a coat of shellac I could then clean the tallboy and washing the dirt into the old repairs .

Using a mixture of liquids together I could clean the surface without breaking down the old finish underneath it. Allowing to dry, I then applied first coat of beewax, and buffed of . Then repeating two more coats of wax and then colouring out the new repairs before applying a last hard beewax to finish the tallboy. The original plate handles were not removed and got cleaned on the peace of furniture.
