Back with a bang!

Football in the Championship is back this weekend for the final run and what a run in it promises to be for North End. While play off hop is now a very big outside bet some big games both home and away are on the horizon. This week sees North End travel to problem club Derby County as Rooney`s side fight desperately to avoid the drop. However, the big one is on Tuesday evening under the floodlights at Deepdale when North End welcome Blackpool to Deepdale in what promises to be a cracking evening in front of a 19,000 crowd and the SKY cameras.

Firstly, though, North End travel to Pride Park on Saturday for a 3pm kick off against Derby County. The Rams are in real danger of relegation to League 1 as we speak with the club eight points adrift of fourth from bottom Reading with just seven games to play. You have to think that if Derby do not beat North End and Reading win a Barnsley then Wayne Rooney`s side will be playing League one football next season. Rooney has done an excellent job under the very difficult circumstances and his team are easy on the eye, however some of his best players have left the club and he is now relying on youth to try and perform the great escape. For North End it will be a chance to put the horrors of Kenilworth Road behind them and shake off the cobwebs from that shocking 0-4 defeat. Ryan Lowe spoke well at Monday evening`s fans forum about the plans for next year but there is much to do in these last eight games before we start worrying about next term. Derby will press hard early on but if North End see out the first twenty minutes I can see us winning this game and condemning the Rams to a spell in the third tier. There is, of course, extra spice around the game due to the fact that Chris Kirchner was interested in buying Derby County earlier in the season but the deal fell through and now it would appear his interest lies at Deepdale. I really feel for the Derby fans because they didn`t make this mess in fact they have shown incredible support for their team during these trying times. I suppose there will be those amongst the North End support who will want to rub their nose in the horse shit they are in. Perhaps we should remember what great respect the 2,448 travelling Rams showed at Deepdale back on the 16th October following the passing of Trevor Hemmings. Cheer North End Loud and Proud but I, for one, won`t be crowing at Derby`s downfall not least because they are a founder member of the the football league but also because there, but for the grace of God, and Trevor, go we.

Tuesday sees the game that we have all been waiting for when the Donkey Lashers turn up at Deepdale as North End look to avenge the defeat at Bloomfield Road in the Autumn and put to bed the shocking performance given by the team on that day. Blackpool sit above North End in the league albeit by one place at the moment but that could all change on Saturday. Tickets have sold well and with a crowd around 19,000 expected the decision by the club to split the Kop seems more than justified. This will be Ryan Lowe`s first experience of this particular derby and it promises to set the stage for plenty of these days in the future. The game holds even more significance due to the fact that Tuesday April 5th sees the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sir Tom Finney and the surfer flag on the Town End, created due to the great work of pne-online in raising nearly £6k, should be a sight to behold as it weaves it`s way up and across the AKTE before the players enter the field. Let us just hope that SKY do it justice and Sir Tom justice in it`s broadcast on Tuesday evening. Clearly this is a game with a lot of bragging rights hanging on it and I always believe it is better to win the second derby than the first as you get all the bragging rights through the Summer and into next season. The squad should need no motivation whatsoever for this game and certainly Ryan Lowe can hugely enhance his kudos to the North End faithful with a win over the old enemy on Tuesday evening. Ryan Lowe said on Monday evening, when asked did he know how much this game went and how would he motivate the players, you just do your bit off the pitch and we will do our bit on it. We need Deepdale rocking to it`s foundations on Tuesday evening to put to bed that horror show at the Seaside back on that dismal day in October.

And finally this week:- the sad news that we all knew was coming and that was the announcement of the retirement of Declan Rudd due to injury at the age of 31. Dec made 196 appearances for North End and for a huge majority of those he was a rock at the back for North End. At least his last game for North End was one to remember which was Liverpool at home in front of 22,000 back in the Autumn ion the 4th round of the League Cup. An odd poor game and the one that went through his legs at Birmingham in the league should not distort the many great games he had as North End`s last line and I remember a penalty save late on at Stoke being one of the highlights. Im sure you will join me in wishing Dec and his family well back in their home town of Norwich and we thank Declan for all his efforts at Deepdale over the years.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has been hit where it hurts by a group they would never have imagined being able to; angry teenagers with a powerful hashtag #BoycottNRA. Many expected the Parkland shooting to be part of the usual politics with everyone saying that something should be done before moving on to other topics making sure to not ruffle the NRA's feathers. Young adults are now proving to be more mature than the politicians that their parents and adults put into office. It's caused a groundswell no one saw coming reminding many of 1968 when young adults took the streets with an impact. History is repeating itself decades later with even younger adults, but the NRA and conservatives took to treating them as any formidable opponent by trying to smear their names and reputations. Today's teens are much savvier than Dana Lasher and conservative outlets attacking them though. They aren't succumbing to backing off these attacks. They have learned one trick from President Donald Trump. That is just to keep pushing back against any and all attacks. I personally am curious what a former NRA president, Sandra Froman, has to say about the organization now as she brought much more respect to it. I am left wondering if she is left feeling disappointed in the organization's actions of late. The NRA lashed out at corporations rushing to abandon it, as companies from United Airlines to Best Western have cut ties with the gun lobby group under pressure from a boycott movement following a Feb. 14 high school shooting. Without context, twin announcements from Delta and United airlines on Saturday morning might look trivial: The end of flight discounts to the NRA’s annual convention, which few outside the gun rights organization likely knew existed before they became boycott targets. But it has always fought back against pushes for new gun laws, and efforts to significantly restrict firearms inevitably die out as public fury over the shootings ebbs. But outrage over the Parkland shooting — sustained in part by politically active teenagers who survived the massacre — has shown no signs of fading. Police say a former student killed 17 people with a legally purchased semiautomatic rifle, one of at least 10 guns he owned. As calls for gun control have spread, the NRA has increasingly become a target of activists, with social media hashtags urging boycotts of any corporation found to be linked with it. Delta and United are the latest to submit to the pressure. First National Bank of Omaha, one of the largest private U.S. banks, may have been the first to respond publicly to the boycott calls. NRA members will now have to pay the same price for its anti-virus software as everyone else. On the same day, insurer Chubb Limited announced that it will stop underwriting “NRA Carry Guard,” a policy marketed to NRA members who face legal or civil lawsuits after they shoot someone, which gun opponents sometimes call “murder insurance.” A spokesman for Chubb told Reuters that the company had made the decision months ago, but its announcement of the fact on Friday only increased the perception of a boycott movement swelling against the NRA. The correct response to the Florida shooting, he said, was more armed security on school campuses — not fewer guns in the United States. Pressure campaigns have become a favorite tool of liberal groups during Trump’s presidency — from early efforts to boycott Trump-branded products to a Twitter campaign that identified and exposed people seen marching at a far-right protest in Charlottesville this past summer. Social media and Internet companies began to ban far-right personalities from their sites after that rally turned violent. So far, for all the companies that have signed on, the NRA boycotts have managed only to wipe out a few peripheral perks for the group’s members. The Parkland shooting and its negative publicity caused the investment giant BlackRock to explore ways of letting its clients disinvest from gun companies, Bloomberg News reported. Teachers in Florida are pressuring their pension fund managers to do the same. But gun industry stocks are widely held. CNBC reported this week that some of Wall Street’s largest exchange-traded funds include holdings in several gunmakers. And investors may be hesitant to dump gunmakers’ stocks as long as the companies remain lucrative. New York Times financial columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin, five days after the Parkland shooting, made a proposal: Banks and credit companies could effectively ban assault weapons right now, simply by prohibiting customers from using their services to buy them. Financial companies ban the purchase of products like cryptocurrency with credit cards, Sorkin wrote, and some executives were considering policies that would lead “assault weapons [to] be eliminated from virtually every firearms store in America because otherwise the sellers would be cut off from the credit card systems.” Gunmakers, of course, also use credit to make purchases, so banks could throttle them from the supply side, as well. Whether banks would do this, however, is in question. In 2012, Snopes investigated a report that Bank of America was cutting off credit lines to gun manufacturers. A spokeswoman for the bank denied the report, saying it had no policies against doing business with the firearms industry and pointing to a $250 million deal with a gunmaker that same month. Six years later, amid the growing outrage from the Stoneman Douglas massacre, the bank sounds very different. Axios reported on Saturday that Bank of America was “reexamining” its relationship with AR-15 rifle manufacturers who do business with it. “We are joining other companies in our industry to examine what we can do to help end the tragedy of mass shootings,” Bank of America said in a statement.
