In Beast From Haunted Cave, cut-throat gangsters hatch a plan to rob a bank in Deadwood, South Dakota. When one of the henchmen sets off an explosion in a nearby gold mine to act as a diversion for the heist, he awakens a blood-sucking, spider-like creature that isn’t happy about the intrusion. When a violent snowstorm delays the gang’s escape, things rapidly progress from bad to blood-curdling worse.
In Ski Troop Attack, an American patrol has to cross behind enemy lines by skis in order to blow up a railroad bridge. The task is made harder by conflicts between the platoon's veteran sergeant and its inexperienced lieutenant and by constant attacks from pursuing German troops.
Pre-order Beast from Haunted / Ski Troop Attack.

1 - Beast From Haunted Cave (1959)
This movie is... not a horror movie. I oopsed it on this one, my bad for real. There is a monster in this movie, mostly off camera in a couple of shots in the body of the film and for about 5 agonizing minutes at the very end, but this is a heist movie with horror scenes tacked on. HOWEVER-- that’s not to say it was completely awful. This black and white Corman Bros-produced flick is unabashedly a remake of their earlier film Naked Paradise, but with a skeletal spider-like monster and an abandoned mine in Deadwood, SD. Starring Michael Forest of “Who Mourns for Adonais?” Trek infamy, Corman perrenial Frank Wolff, and lesser-known Sinatra Richard, the real focus of the film is Sheila Noonan, cast as a woman whose name is a slur against Romani people. The unfortunately named G**** is the most compelling character in the movie, a hard-drinking but quick-witted member of the gang executing a heist on the safe at a ski lodge. Their plan involved blowing up a nearby mine in order to distract the ski lodge people from their heist, allowing the gang to ski like the wind for two days to freedom. Noonan completely rocks her role, filling her character up with the sort of wistful pathos anyone who has careened down the wrong alley in life can identify with. She wonders if it isn’t too late to find a life less full of the terror of the law and constant flight, and she works out a plan to get out of the gang with the help of Forest’s himbo outdoorsman-type straight arrow. Everything comes to a crashing halt when, at the end of the film, there remains a need for there to have been a monster and for it to have done something, and the rest is a confused mess of actors gamely fighting props. This is maybe the first movie I’ve ever seen that I can honestly say I wish it had cut all the horror elements. They were my least favorite part of this ostensible horror flick, along with a few short scenes involving some nasty racism against an indigenous American woman and some fucked-up gender politics throughout. I don’t know if I can recommend this film unless the reader is a serious Heist Movie fanatic, and only for relative strength of Noonan’s role over everyone else in this largely forgettable debut from director Monte Hellman, who would later go on to direct some action scenes from Robocop(!).

College During COVID: The Adult Dependents Financial Burden
By Theresa Turkowski, Florida State University Class of 2023
July 18, 2020
Tumblr media
COVID-19 turned American universities upside down, many universities closed in-person classes in March. As we get closer to Fall 2020, almost every school remains vague in their updates for classes, with everything subject to change. For students, COVID-19 has been a financial nightmare; students are faced with the dilemma of paying rent for empty rooms [1] and not knowing if they’ll have to do the same thing for fall. In the midst of this chaos, ‘Adult Dependents’ are often unlucky enough to not receive assistance during this time, meaning no stimulus checks [4], and no rent forgiveness.
When FSU announced that the remainder of the spring semester would be online, FSU students, like many others around the country, wondered what that would mean for their dorms and apartments. While on-campus housing and meal plans were refunded quickly, off-campus residents were not so lucky. Many students were tied up in lease agreements, some students having already signed their lease for the 2020-2021 school year. Sadly, this is a nationwide issue; many students are locked into lease agreements that are out of the university's control [1] Charlie, a rising sophomore at FSU, recounted his frustrating experience with his housing complex, “When I first left, it was confusing, I had no idea what to do”. Like many students, Charlie fully moved out of his off-campus residence in March, with the hope that the landlord wouldn’t charge him rent. Unfortunately, this complex proved to be a nightmare. By early April, housing began emailing Charlie and his family for rent payments; and as of mid-July “Housing is still trying to make us pay for Spring, and I never received any refunds” Charlie still holds out hope that this complex will cut students some slack, but these lease agreements don’t have a pandemic clause. Apartment companies in Tallahassee have said they aren’t offering lease terminations since leases are a “contractual obligation [5]”. Many are sticking to their word even still, trapping students in a web of legal documents that it takes an attorney to understand.
While Spring 2020 ended, Fall 2020 loomed and will lead to even more trouble for students. With many students already locked into housing agreements into 2021, some students are looking at paying for a full year of empty housing, with many students taking out loans to do so. One FSU student, Anna, was “forced” into signing her lease for 2020-2021 in December of last year and now, she's stuck in it. “I struggled leaving FSU, I never received any refunds despite having to uphold my lease for next year.” Anna initially thought she would have to return for Fall, since one of her major-specific classes would be in-person. Like FSU, the UC system and Howard University will be bringing a fraction of their students for Fall. In FSU’s case, the school’s face-to-face classes will be reserved for lab classes [3]. For students, that means either trying to sublease their apartment to the few students returning, or paying thousands to be near campus for one or two of their classes. While Anna was set to return for Fall, students' schedules are not set in stone. On the FSU website, it stated that many classes will switch between in-person and remote before a final decision is reached on July 16th. Anna, however, became a victim of the ‘toggle’, all of her classes switched to remote, and now, returning for Fall doesn’t make financial sense. She stated “I’ve signed over my lease to a sublessee and won’t come back to the FSU campus for fall. This has been a very stressful experience to say the least.”
Some students around the country are fighting their leases, California State University, Fullerton students have started a petition to get out of their ‘ironclad’ agreements [2]. However, most of these complexes around the nation are stuck between a rock and a hard place. While in an ideal world, students would be able to get out of paying thousands to a housing complex they don’t even live in, the complexes need to stay afloat for next year. Complexes need to pay their property taxes, employees, insurance, and more [2]. While multi-million dollar universities can offset the cost of the refunds by reallocating things like tuition, off-campus complexes only have these leases.
So, it’s unlikely that a lot of students will receive full refunds for their Spring 2020 off-campus housing, and worse still, students now scramble to sublease in complexes that allow it; but with many students now staying home, students may be fighting over potential sublessees.
2020 has been full of chaos, and stuck in the midst of it are college students. Some are still fighting their Spring 2020 off-campus lease agreement to not pay thousands for rooms sat vacant since march. Worse still, now students are stuck in rigid leases well into 2021, with many students spending the coming year at home, it seems like many students are destined to pay out thousands due to the COVID-19.

Republican Women in Alabama Begin to Turn on Roy Moore
ANNISTON, AlabamaB.L. Shirley is a Republican woman from a Republican county who alwaysalwaysvotes Republican. And yet, on a windy, grey morning last weekend, the Talladega, Alabama, retiree found herself in, of all places, a Democrats campaign office, wondering just what she could do to defeat the GOP candidate running for a seat in the U.S. Senate from her state.
Roy Moore, she said, when asked why she would go canvassing for Democrat Doug Jones before the special election on Dec. 12. I think Roy Moore is an impostor.I am a Christian and I dont want to be counted in his camp. Hes a divisive person.
If Jones is to pull off a victory, it will be because women like Shirley knocked on doors, called neighbors, and worked to convince otherwise skeptical voters that his opponent is fundamentally unfit for the office hes seeking. A few weeks ago, that seemed like a tall order. As the election nears, it no longer appears quite so improbable.
Allegations that Moore routinely pursued teenage girls and in some cases assaulted them when he was a single man in his thirties have caused Republican voters in Alabama to reassess their options. Some have decided to rally around the nominee. But others have recoiled, leaving Moore in real risk of losing his attempt to take over the seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
More than any other group, it is the women of Alabama, specifically Republican women, who will be the divisive voting bloc.
Women like Walton Foster.
A Republican and a Christian, Foster voted for Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL) in the special election primary and said she plans to cast her ballot for Jones in the general. She considers Roy Moore an abomination.
Our historically Republican-leaning suburb is covered with Doug Jones signs. I have seen one for Roy Moore, said Foster, a mother of two teenage boys who lives in a suburb of Birmingham. He is more about his personal agenda and less about what is good for the state of Alabama. He does not seem interested in working with anyone. He has refused to debate and defend his positions publicly. When you add the nine accusationsnine!it is clear he is unfit for office.
Moore himself seems acutely aware that his standing among the women of Alabama is precarious at best. Over the past few days, his campaign has held press events with women testifying to his character while his wife has become his most public-facing surrogate.
The message has been that he is a victim of the liberal media, not a predator who targeted underage girls. Democrats in the state say it isnt working.
Sheila Gilbert, the chair of the Calhoun County Democratic Party, said shes heard from a number of unhappy Republican women since the allegations against Moore came to light in The Washington Post several weeks ago. She believes that those woman, and that story, have fundamentally changed the course of the Senate race.
I worked on a phone bank the other night with women calling women and a lot of women just wanted to talk, Gilbert said. They were saying they were Republicans and theyre going to vote for Doug Jones. They are appalled.Ive heard a lot of that.
A Fox News poll released last Friday showed that Gilberts phone bank conversations may reflect a larger trend taking place across the state. In the poll, Jones had an eight point lead over Moore50 percent to 42 percentmuch of it owed to his lopsided support from women, especially young women voters. While Jones was up 58-32 percent among all women, he had a monster 49-point advantage among women under age 45. Jones also received about one-fifth, 19 percent, of the votes of Republican women.
Strategists on both sides believe the race will come down to whether Jones can convince suburban Republican women from the states larger cities, like Birmingham, that Moore is, simply, unacceptable. And after strategically holding back on making an issue of the sexual assault allegations, the Jones campaign on Tuesday unveiled a television ad highlighting the prominent conservatives who had condemned his opponent.
youtube
The spot prominently featured President Donald Trumps daughter Ivanka. But there were plenty of other national Republican women Jones ad team could have chosen for cameos. Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) has called on Moore to drop out of the race. And Peggy Noonans column in The Wall Street Journal Saturday called on the Women of Alabama to Say No to Roy Moore.
But for all the national hand-wringing and the increased activity at local Democratic campaign headquarters, many Alabama Republican women seem ready to stick by Moore. That includes the states governor, Kay Ivey, who has said shell vote for Moore despite believing the accounts of his accusers. And it includes others who testified that they simply didnt find the allegations credible.
Why are we just now hearing about these women? said Angel Martin as she stood in a line at the Starbucks outside of Oxford, Alabama. Why is this just now coming out right before an election?
Two other women agreedthe timing was too convenient for Democrats- but neither wanted to be quoted supporting Moore. I just dont want to talk about all that, one said.
And then there is B.L. from Talladega. She asked that she only be quoted by her initials because her sister, who also lives in Alabama, is voting for Roy Moore.
B.L.s act of protest against her Republican Party for nominating a man she called an imposter would, in essence, be canceled out.
