#Can you buy microsoft office word only full#
You'll need to sign up for a free Outlook account but it’s worth noting that there are lots of features missing and you won't be able to save documents to your computer's hard drive - they'll be stored in your OneDrive space instead. Visit from any web browser to access limited versions of these programs (you can also freeload apps for your smartphone or tablet). It is possible to use Word, Excel and Powerpoint free of charge, though. You’ll have access to Word, Powerpoint and Excel to use on one PC or Mac, but you can't use the software on a tablet or smartphone and you won’t get the extra online storage or the updates. The second option is to make a one-off purchase of Office Home & Student 2019 for £119.99.
#Can you buy microsoft office word only update#
With both options you’ll get every new update such as new tools and features, as well as security updates and bug fixes. It costs £59.99 a year for personal use for one user, but for £79.99 a year, you can get Office 365 Home which lets you have six different log-ins - a better deal for a family. You also get 1TB of storage space on Microsoft’s cloud service, OneDrive (everyone can get 5GB free). You also get Publisher and Access but you can only use these on a PC.
#Can you buy microsoft office word only full#
The first is to buy a subscription to Office 365 which lets you use the latest full versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook on your PC as well as on any tablets or smartphones you own. There are a few different ways you can use Microsoft Office. We earn a commission for products purchased through some links in this article.

Top 07: Best Video Editing Software For Beginner
If video isn’t already an important part of your content marketing strategy, odds are it’s about to be. Web content is taking a turn toward video whether SEOs and content marketers like it or not. Nearly 50% of marketers are adding YouTube and Facebook channels for video distribution in the next year; one-third of online activity is spent watching the video, and video itself is projected to account for more than 80% of all internet traffic by 2019. 80%!
For those looking to continue to grow their organic traffic, that means one thing:
Not an expert? Don’t know how to edit videos, have a video studio, or have a bona fide video specialist to shoot and cut your features? That’s alright! The goal of today’s blog is to show you that with the right video editing software, you too can churn out sleek, professional video content—regardless of experience—and keep your content strategy ahead of the curve.
Let’s dive in! Here are our recs for the top 10 best pieces of video editing software or video editing apps for beginners—from cheapest (i.e. free!) to most expensive
01 apple imovie
so to those of you working with PCs, this one won’t really apply; but we’d remiss to leave it off the list. If you’re looking for simplicity and elegance, it doesn’t get much better than Apple iMovie. iMovie’s ten high-fidelity filters are some of the classiest in the video editing game; and if you’re shooting on your iPhone, or have been editing a project on your iPad, you can use AirDrop to wirelessly and seamlessly transfer your project over to your Mac. One of iMovie’s most coveted features is its green-screen, or “chroma-key” tool, which allows you to place your characters in exotic locations—Hawaii, say—at a moment’s notice. Want to overlay the scene with “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”? iMovie ties directly in with iTunes and GarageBand, so you can easily implement custom tracks and sounds. When your movie’s finally ready to ship, release it into the wild using iMessage, Facebook, YouTube, or any other of iMovie’s succinctly connected platforms. Standout Features: Seamless Apple product integration; green-screen; audio and social platform integration
02 Lumen5
How to Edit Videos Without Much Technical Ability We’ll put this more in the category of a video editing “tool” than video editing software, but for social media marketers who want to create fun, flashy social promos in the blink of an eye, Lumen5 is a no brainer. Here’s a short little feature we made for a recent blog postLumen5 markets itself as a tool that turns blog posts into social promos. While the process isn’t perfect, and you’ll likely have to do some tinkering to get your blog content looking just the way you want it, the rest of the video creation process is a cinch. Merely refine some copy that teases your blog post; drag and drop some gifs, screengrabs, or video clips; add some music, and your engaging social video will be ripe for Facebook and Twitter. Standout Features: Blog-to-social-promo creation; drag-and-drop interface Pricing: Create as many 480p videos as you want with the free version; or, for $50 per month, upgrade to 1080p HD. 3. Nero Video One of the cheaper options around ($49.99), Nero Video holds its own on this list—it comes well-stocked with a lot of the tricks and effects you’ll find among other products vying for video editing supremacy, and as far as software for beginners, you can certainly do worse. If you’re going to spend money learning how to edit videos, however, you might want to steer clear. Nero just doesn’t have the speed and functionality of some of the other products listed here, and if it’s value proposition is its price, $50 is still not all that cheap.
03. Corel VideoStudio
VideoStudio has all the characteristics of the other top-of-the-line products on this list, including 360-degree VR and 4k support, but it also has the distinction of being the first piece of consumer video editing software to offer motion tracking—which, if you’re not already familiar, is a feature that allows you to track specific objects throughout your cut (if you wanted, say, to point an arrow at one of your characters, blur out his face, or bestow him with a funny hat). Most of the products on this list come equipped with motion tracking, but VideoStudio still boasts one of the best motion tracking systems around. One of the knocks on VideoStudio is its speed, which lags notably behind some of the faster systems on this list, like CyberLink PowerDirector and Pinnacle Studio. Still: for a one-time payment of $51.99? You can do much worse. Standout Features: Motion tracking Pricing: One-time payment of $51.99 5. Filmora from Wondershare When it comes to free video editing software, Filmora is about as multi-faceted as they come. Filmora is Wondershare’s standard, simple, high-quality video editing offering; but Wondershare also offers FilmoraGo (for mobile editing) and Filmora Scrn (for screen recording and editing). The design is intuitive and easy to use and comes replete with filters, overlays, motion elements, transitions, and a small selection of royalty-free music. Here are a few more of the “basics” Filmora offers: 4k and gif support are boilerplate features for most video editing products today, but one thing Filmora does particularly well is titles. Title tools are trending in video software, and while Filmora’s doesn’t have the functionality of say, an Apple Final Cut Pro X, which can superimpose 3D titles over your videos and rotate them on three axes, it nonetheless has some snazzy titling features for the money you’re spending. Another Filmora feature beginners to video editing will find attractive is “Easy Mode,” which allows you to create fun, polished edits by merely dragging and dropping clips, choosing a theme, and selecting music. Standout features: Title tool; mobile and screen editing; “Easy Mode” Pricing: Starts at $59.99 for a lifetime license; or, $39.99 for a year.
04. CyberLink PowerDirector
we stretched the meaning of “software” a bit earlier; now, we’re going to stretch the meaning of “beginner.” We included CyberLink PowerDirector on this list because its interface is, at the end of the day, pretty straightforward. Head to the product page, run through the tutorials, and you’ll be alright. There is within the interface, however, an embarrassment of options and effects. If you’re not willing to invest the time in learning all of them, it can get a bit overwhelming. In terms of rendering, PowerDirector is regarded as one of the fastest video editing systems around. It also operates consistently in the sphere of the innovative and cutting edge. PowerDirector led the charge in the switch to 4k, and today, it’s one of the first systems to support 360-degree virtual reality footage. Price: you get what you pay for! $79.99 gets you unlimited access to one of the most capable pieces of video editing software around. Standout Features: Lightning-fast rendering; the comprehensive suite of effects Pricing: One-time payment of $79.99 Adobe Premiere Elements We include Premiere Elements on the list mostly because it’s been an industry leader in the video editing game for some time. And $79.99 is not egregious, but we’re here to say that at that price, you’re mostly paying for the name. In the time since Premiere Elements’ inception, too many other products have surpassed it in speed and capability for us to place it among the cream of the crop. That’s to take nothing away from Premiere Elements’ usability, though—specifically for beginners. The Guided Edits feature makes Adobe Premiere a particularly attractive option for beginners, as it allows them to take on both quick edits and advanced projects with substantial assistance from the software. So while Premiere Elements lags behind the competition in terms of speed, 3D editing, multi-cam, and some other advanced features, it’s still a great choice for the beginner looking for a comprehensive suite of effects, and some guidance on how to implement them. Standout Features: Guided Edits; simple interface Pricing: One-time payment of $79.99 8.
05. Pinnacle Studio
At the higher end of the Corel product line is Pinnacle Studio—which, at $129.95 (the amount you’ll need to pay to edit 360-degree and 4k content with the “Ultimate” version), costs more than twice as much as VideoStudio. What do you get for the extra money? Well, not only does Pinnacle come readily equipped with all the features you’d expect from an upper-echelon product—motion tracking, 360-degree VR support, 4k support, multi-cam, etc.—but you’d be hard-pressed to find a faster product on the market in terms of rendering. For all of its features, Pinnacle’s interface is still as user-friendly and intuitive as anything on this list. Thus, is you have the need for speed, and you don’t mind shelling out a few extra bucks for it, Pinnacle might be the product for you. Standout Features: Top-of-the-line rendering speeds; a full range of features and support Pricing: One-time payment of $129.95
06. Adobe Premiere
Pro With a virtually unmatched suite of features, 360 VR and 4k support, and a newly implemented ability to store, organize, and share assets online with a team, Adobe Premiere Pro is perhaps the most complete piece of video editing software around. Here’s a recent video promo for our free AdWords account structure guide we cut using Premiere Pro. One of the more dazzling of Premiere Pro’s tools is the Lumetri Color tool, which offers color adjustment and manipulation on a par with that of Photoshop. The multi-cam feature is also a winner—whereas most systems allow you to work with a limited number of camera angles, Premiere Pro’s latest iteration allows for an unlimited amount. Throw in a wealth of titling options, readily connected ancillary apps (like Photoshop and After Effects), and a flexible, easy-to-use interface, and Premiere Pro is a no brainer. Standout Features: Multi-cam and coloring options; title tool; easy integration with Adobe Products; straightforward interface Pricing: $19.99/month
07. Apple Final Cut Pro X
For the most advanced, least fiscally prudent of beginners, there’s Apple Final Cut Pro X. $299.99 might be a little steep for a product you may well have a difficult time understanding; but for those among you who enjoy a challenge, and who aspire to some level of professionalism in video editing, why not go for it? Apple has made the transition from iMovie to Final Cut Pro more painless than ever—so if you’re the kind of guy or gal who enjoys him/herself an Apple product, and has worked with iMovie to the point of mastery, it might be time to splurge on Final Cut Pro. The power is still daunting; the interface, significantly less so. Standout Features: Magnetic Timeline; Touch Bar support Pricing: One-time payment of $299.99 Some Final Thoughts Are you content or social media marketer looking to get in the video editing game for the sake of keeping up with the growing video trend? Don’t stress! Any of the above software apps would make a fine choice for a beginner. Think about your budget, your current level of expertise, and how much time you’re willing to devote to learning a new skill. Whether you're looking for the best video editing software for YouTube or the responsibility has simply fallen on you to get your team’s video marketing strategy up to snuff—don’t wait around deliberating! Get invested in one of these video editing products, and make it yours.

Every version of TaxAct costs less than TurboTax
Every version of TaxAct costs less than TurboTax , Yes Taxact is cheaper than Turbotax . Take TaxAct Premium, the most costly variation ( driven toward freelancers and entrepreneur), it costs $70 and consists of a single state return, while the comparable variation of TurboTax costs almost $130. And though TaxAct will interrupt you two times for up sells, it consists of some essentials for free– such as online access to your return for seven years– that other rivals provide as expensive add-ons. Note you can always use the taxact customer service phone number if you get stuck for free advice on (319) 536-3571Top TurboTax Complaints
Longer wait times and customer seems to be the most common complaints when compared to TaxAct. Especially around February as we get closer to the cut off dates for filing as things start to get very bust for tax agents as well. The actual software does not seem to get many complaints as its easy to sue and offers great value for money so that’s a good sign for users of Turbotax.
TurboTax Support
TurboTax has a huge support knowledge base and very active community of users who are also willing to help answer questions  . If you have a paid versions also get real-time help using SmartLook, and this will get you connected to a tax specialist who will run you through and tricky questions and advise you ho to use the software. This is a great feature and well worth paying to have an expert on your team fro a very small price compared to paying an accountant or other professional.
Turbotax Live Compare
TurboTax Live provides you with the Expert Services of a professional tax expert to assist you getting your return 100% correct. If you have concerns or questions associated with your return. When you use TurboTax Live, either an experienced EA (Enrolled Agent), Practicing Attorney or CPA (Certified Public Accountant) will work on reviewing your tax returns and provide you with approval when you can file, making sure that you receive as much money as possible, and to ensure your taxes have been done correctly.
Tax Act Overview and Review
Tax Act
TaxAct’s products are less expensive than competing packages from bigger names like TurboTax or H&R Block. Thats especially ideal especially for people who need advanced tax software, which can run $100 or more elsewhere when you factor in the price of preparing a state return. TaxAct also has a price guarantee too and offers a great cost effective turbotax alternative for most people, which means you pay the listed price when you start your return rather than when you finish and we like that . This might be helpful because, from my experience, tax software prices tend to go up about a month before the filing deadline.
TaxAct’s free version is safe , legit and available only to people who qualify to file the 1040EZ; folks who have to file a 1040A or regular 1040 will need to get one of the paid versions. The paid versions import last year’s TaxAct return. Also use taxactonline to file your returns faster for a better experience.
TaxAct provides several products based on your income tax status. They primarily offer four central plans that you can choose from free, basic, plus, and premium. The free option assists with tax returns, and the service is free of charge when you file for state and federal tax returns. While the free plan of TaxAct comes with a $15 fee when you want to import your last year’s TaxAct return file, it’s quite reasonable considering how crucial it is to get this year’s data correctly.
TaxAct Pricing
The free plan offers support for 1040EZ and 1040A
Taxact filing fees are reasonably priced and not too expensive this year
There are three paid versions that range from $27 to $51 , get in early to avoid a price increase
For the free plan, the State return rep is $0 and $37 for the paid versions
MyDealsClub has great discounts and coupons for Taxact Click here
Tax Act Pros And ConsPros of TaxAct To Compare
Accuracy guarantee, price lock guarantee, maximum refund pledge, and a satisfaction guarantee.
5 e-files and with every purchase of the higher-level download software you get 1 state return
Free state and federal e-filing for 1040EZ and 1040A
Mobile versions are available
Professional audit defense
Q&A interview guide filters for details about the previous year’s taxes and health insurance
Provides professional tax products for accountants, CPAs, and other professionals
Ability to import W-2 forms from the participating institutions, previous year returns, as well as charitable donations.
Cons of TaxAct
• No feature for user forums
• Can only import 1099-B CVS file formats
• No Coupon code
Top TaxAct Complaints
The most common complaint about TaxAct are additional charges .For example they charge you $9.99 to keep your federal tax return available and $20 to keep both federal and state returns viewable into the future , we think that’s just gouging and not something turbotax does. You can however save your returns in hard-copy or pdf after you file but you cant re access them without paying the fee. And if you want to import old returns and direct deposit you now need to pay a fee the upgrade which again is a common complaint of using TaxAct
Tax Act Support
If you need help, TaxAct will also help you connect with a CPA or Enrolled Agent to chat live or on a phone call. They also have Free helpline for users who have subscribed which also makes TaxAct well worth the money . They wont offer any detailed tac advice that will require the use of your own accountant but for the basics its a great thing to know that backup is available.
TaxAct  has an online knowledge base similar to Turbotax and this allows users to search for answers about  tax issues. However I would say on balance there’s is not anywhere near as good as Turbotax’s
Additional Considerations
Both TurboTax and TaxAct allow you to use your refund to pay for the fees incurred during tax-prep. However, there’s a fee for that: $39.99 with TurboTax and $25 with TaxAct Plus.
TaxAct has an audit assistance feature that consists of an FAQ page on their website. You also have the option to purchase ‘Audit Defense’ a product offered by a company they partner with; Protection Plus. The coverage includes 3-year audit services for the current year’s return, and a comprehensive resolution and response strategy, assistance with denied credits, state and IRS correspondence, as well as tax fraud and tax debt assistance. The service is also included in their Premium package.
When you get an audit notice, you’ll receive free guidance from tax experts on how to prepare and what to expect. If you want to have someone physically represent you in front of the IRS, you have to buy their Audit Defense product when you file. TurboTax charges $44.99 for it.
Final Word,Conclusions and Verdict
Which Is Better Taxact Or Turbotax ?
In the battle between Taxact vs Turbotax the price difference between TurboTax and TaxAct starts to be a clear indicator of who is the better option we found. For most people, this is a non-issue, but if you’ve worked in different states with different income taxes, the $37 fee charged by TurboTax per state can add up quick. On the flip side taxact premium cost is  $24.95 to $104.90 which is also not cheap
However, every battle has a clear winner, and this year, we crown TurboTax the winner of tax-prep software in 2019, based on personal experiences and the experiences of our team. Its reliable ,dependable and not overly expensive and we think the best overall online tax preparation company.
Satisfaction Guarantee: Both TaxAct and TurboTax offer money back guarantees if you are not totally satisfied with their tax software but it doe not apply after you print out your return which is good to know.
Have Your Say
We encourage you to comment below on your thoughts feelings about these two giants in tax prep to further assist others in making up their minds. Ultimately its your choice ,TurboTax is more expensive sure but if are running multiple returns or need extra special help you will want to go with it when compared to Taxact as it has all the bells and whistles to complete your filing on time and with the guidance of tax service professionals. But if on the other hand you a very low income to declare and just have basic needs then just go with Taxact and save some money  but as long as you dont get tangled up with the all the schedules and information , it can be very overwhelming.

Credit report mistakes are much more common than you might think. And, while you can remove inaccurate information from your credit report yourself, the process is often frustrating and time consuming. Credit repair companies can make this process easier by doing the heavy lifting for you — obtaining your reports, finding inaccuracies and disputing any mistakes directly with creditors and the major credit bureaus. So, if you’re ready to leave bad credit behind, read on for Money’s guide to the best credit repair services of September 2022.
Our Top Picks for Best Credit Repair Companies
Credit Saint – Best Overall Lexington Law – Credit Repair Industry Leader Sky Blue Credit – Best Value The Credit People – Best Guarantee Ovation Credit Repair – Best for Discounts The Credit Pros – Best Bonus Features Credit Versio – Best for DIY Credit Repair
Best Credit Repair Reviews
Pros 90-day money-back guarantee Free credit evaluation Only one set-up fee charged if two members of the same household sign up Clear pricing policies Online sign-up available Cons Limited availability First work fees between up to $195 No online chat Monthly fee: $79.99 – $119.99 Set-up fee: $99 – $195 Why we chose this company: We picked Credit Saint as our Best Overall because of its clear pricing policies and an array of affordable and comprehensive package options. The packages — which range from $79.99 to $119.99 — differ in how many claims they’ll dispute a month, from five claims with the basic “Credit Polish” plan to an unlimited amount with the premium “Clean Slate” plan. Credit Saint offers a free consultation to evaluate your particular situation and identify the next steps you should take. Once you sign up with them, the company assigns an advisory team to your case and schedules calls to keep you informed. Credit Saint also provides a credit score analysis and gives you access to a credit score tracker to monitor your progress. Some plans include Experian credit monitoring as well.. Additionally, the company offers a 90-day money-back guarantee if you don’t see any changes in your credit history after three months. The company offers three credit repair packages: Credit Polish, Credit Remodel and Clean Slate. Credit Polish $79.99 p/m Credit Remodel $99.99 p/m Clean Slate $119.99 p/m $99 one-time initial work fee $99 one-time initial work fee $195 initial work fee Dispute up to 5 items per monthly cycle Dispute up to 10 items per month Unlimited monthly disputes Goodwill intervention letters to creditors Experian monitoring Experian monitoring Goodwill intervention letters to creditors Goodwill intervention letters to creditors Escalated information requests Escalated information requests Pros Long, proven track record Online contact options Employs attorneys and paralegals Free credit report consultation Cons Credit monitoring only available with the priciest plan Financial management tools only available with Premier Plus plan Pending legal action from the CFPB No satisfaction guarantee Monthly Fee: $95.95 – $139.95 Set-up fee: $89.95 – $129.95 Why we chose this company: Lexington Law is our pick for Industry Leader due to its more than 17 years of experience and almost nationwide availability (every state except Oregon). Because it’s a law firm and its staff is mostly attorneys and paralegals, the company is said to explore every legal avenue to correct inaccuracies in your credit report. Its account reps — often paralegals — offer personalized support over extended hours, seven days a week. The company offers three service packages ranging from $95.85 to $139.95 per month, each including credit disputes and creditor interventions — such as debt validation and goodwill letters. Its mid- and high-tier plans include additional perks like a personal finance manager, identity theft insurance and/or a Transunion FICO score tracker. If you want to track your credit progress, Lexington has a highly ranked mobile app where users have 24/7 access to their credit score analysis, personalized counseling plan and dispute updates. However, Lexington has also had its share of legal problems. It’s the subject of several lawsuits, including legal action filed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in 2019, which alleges that the company used unfair telemarketing practices to recruit customers. The company claims that the practices were actually carried out by third parties they contracted. Despite this, Lexington Law remains a powerful player in the industry and offers the advantage of having an experienced law firm handling your case. It offers the following credit repair packages: Concord Standard $95.95 p/m Concord Premier $119.95 p/m Premier Plus $139.95 p/m Bureau challenges Bureau challenges Bureau challenges Creditor interventions Creditor interventions Creditor interventions InquiryAssist InquiryAssist Score analysis Score analysis ReportWatch ReportWatch TransUnion alerts TransUnion alerts Cease & desist letters FICO score tracker Identity theft protection Personal finance tools Pros - 90-day money-back guarantee, no conditions - 50% discount for couples - Repair up to 15 items every 35 days - Online sign-up available Cons - No monthly credit monitoring - No financial tools, such as budgeting - Monthly disputes limited to five per bureau every 35 days Monthly fee: $79 for individuals, $119 for couples Set-up fee: $79, $119 for couple Why we chose this company: Sky Blue Credit Repair offers a single, low-cost credit-repair package that includes just about everything you need to clean up your credit report quickly. For $79 a month, Sky Blue provides a detailed analysis of your credit report and draws up customized dispute letters. Its set-up fee is also relatively low ($79), while other companies charge around $100 or more. Beyond disputing credit-report errors, Sky Blue gives credit-rebuilding advice. Experts can provide assistance on the financial steps you can take to improve your credit score, such as opening a new credit card or managing your outstanding balances. You can also schedule consultations if you have questions about anything credit-related, like card credit offers or loan applications. It’s worth noting that Sky Blue Credit Repair offers one of the most flexible subscriptions on the market and a 90-day money-back guarantee. Several credit repair agencies offer a 90-day money-back guarantee which promises to refund your money if they don’t remove any negative items from your credit report during that time. Sky Blue Credit Repair also offers a 90-day refund policy. However, it goes one step further letting you pause and resume your membership whenever you like, a feature not available with most other companies. If you want to skip a month of service without canceling your subscription, you can request a pause online. You won’t be charged monthly payments while your account is paused, and you can resume the subscription when needed. This could save you some money on startup fees, which most credit repair companies charge whenever you start using services. Sky Blue is no longer registered with the Better Business Bureau (companies have to pay annual fees to stay accredited). However, when it was registered, it boasted an A+ rating and consumer comments were largely positive. Its credit repair plans include: Sky Blue Credit Repair Services $79 p/m ($119 p/m for couples) Dispute up to 15 items (5 per credit bureau) every 35 days Customized dispute letters Statute of limitations research on reported debts Credit score guidance Credit rebuilding counseling Debt settlement and negotiations consultations Debt validation, goodwill and cease and desist letters Read full review>> Pros Simple pricing structure Customer service available through phone, chat or email Low one-time first work fee ($19) Access to credit score and reports from all three credit bureaus Cons No credit monitoring No financial management tools Monthly fee: $79 or $419 six-month flat rate Set-up fee: $19 Why we chose this company: The Credit People offers both low startup fees and lets customers cancel their subscription when they need to. Most credit repair companies offer a 90-day money-back guarantee. Others only refund you for the last month of service. The Credit People, on the other hand, lets you cancel your subscription whenever you want and refunds both the last and previous month’s payment. The company’s low startup fees set it apart from competitors. While other credit repair services charge around $79 or more to set up your account and pull your credit report, The Credit People only charges $19. After your account is ready, you can either pay $79 a month until you get the result you want or pay a flat fee of $419 for a six-month plan. The Credit People’s interface is also a plus — you can monitor updates to your credit report or score from all three credit bureaus from their easy-to-use online dashboard. It also lets you track open disputes and connect to customer service if you have any questions. The two memberships offered by The Credit People include the following credit repair services: The Credit People Membership $79 p/m ($119 for couples) $19 initial fee $419 flat-rate pricing for a six month membership ($69.83 p/m) 6-month satisfaction guarantee with flat-rate membership Credit reports and credit score Credit rebuilding counseling Action plan focused on raising your credit score Unlimited disputes Read full review>> Pros Multiple available discounts Cancel any time Financial management tools available with both plans Parent company LendingTree has a solid reputation Cons Credit monitoring only provided with Essential Plus Phone-only application process No 24/7 support Monthly fee: $79 – $109 Set-up fee: $89 Why we chose this company: Ovation Credit Repair offers multiple discounts, from a 20% discount for couples to a $50 credit if you refer a friend. Ovation Credit Repair, also known as Ovation Credit Services, stands out when it comes to discounts. It offers a 20% discount for couples and a 10% discount for seniors and military members. It also provides a one-time credit of up to $50 if you switch from another credit repair agency or refer a friend. The company offers two credit repair options: the Essential and Essential Plus. With the Essential plan, a case advisor will guide you through the dispute process and advise you on improving your overall credit situation. You’ll also get access to financial tools for budgeting and building a debt repayment plan. The Essential Plus plan offers additional benefits like Transunion credit report monitoring and unlimited debt validation letters, which ask collectors to verify the accuracy of reported debt. This is an important step because if a collector doesn’t have enough documentation to prove the account in question belongs to you, the bureaus might remove it from your report. Essentials Plan – $79 p/m Essentials Plus Plan – $109 p/m $89 one-time initial work fee / $79 monthly fee $89 one-time initial work fee / $109 monthly fee Free consultation with a credit expert Free consultation with a credit expert Personalized credit dispute options Personalized credit dispute options A case advisor that will oversee the process from start to finish A case advisor that will oversee the process from start to finish Personalized dispute options Unlimited dispute and goodwill letters to creditors Personal case advisor TransUnion credit monitoring Financial Management Tools Official Ovation recommendation letter for future potential lenders Read full review>> Pros Financial management tools and credit monitoring included with every plan Live chat available Certified FICO professionals No setup fee Cons Basic credit repair package only includes one credit dispute 24/7 phone support isn't available Monthly fee: $69 – $149 Set-up fee: $119 or $149 Why we chose this company: While many credit repair companies offer extra perks only with premium plans, The Credit Pros offers useful financial management tools even with its least expensive package. The most affordable package (Money Management) includes tools like bill reminders and a budgeting system that syncs to your credit accounts in real-time, in addition to credit and identity theft monitoring services. The Credit Pros will provide Transunion credit score updates and a full credit report every 60 days. It’ll also track your personal information (like your Social Security number and address) to see if it’s found on the dark web or was used to take out a payday loan, for example. However, one drawback of the Money Management plan is that it’ll address only one inaccurate item from your report per month. If you need help with several items, you’ll need to upgrade to the Prosperity and Success packages. These include the same benefits as the Money Management plan plus some additional perks. The Prosperity Package provides access to SlashRx, a discount program for prescription medications. The Success Package does as well, but it also offers a credit line from National Credit Direct. National Credit Direct is a financing program that allows customers to purchase items such as electronics at low monthly payments. The monthly payments are reported to the credit bureaus, which may help people improve a poor credit score. Do note that the company’s items are usually more expensive when compared to other retailers. All plans include access to The Credit Pros’ mobile app, which lets you review disputes, receive real-time updates and monitor your credit score and report. The company’s free consultation is available in English and Spanish, something not common in the credit repair industry. However, note that its initial work fee is higher than many other competitors’ — $119 for its low and medium tier plans and $149 for its premium plan. Read the full article

Bluehost Review: Good performance, well-designed UX, up-to-date security
There's an explanation Bluehost is perhaps the most well-known hosting provider in the world. We take an in-depth look at what the help.It appears as though there is a practically limitless number of hosting providers who will serve your site for a month-to-month fee. While doing a full review of a single web hosting provider, I set up the most fundamental record conceivable. In this article, I'll plunge into Bluehost's contributions.
Bluehost outlook
Shared hosting begins with a $2.95 each month
Online store hosting begins at $12.95 each month
WordPress hosting begins at $9.95 each month
Virtual private server (VPS) hosting begins at $18.99 each month
Dedicated server hosting begins at $79.99 each month
Price bump after the end of period: Yes

Since there are countless factors among plans and offerings, among hosting providers, however inside the plans offered by anyone supplier, it tends to be hard to get a decent examination. I've tracked down that perhaps the most ideal approach to perceive how a provider performs is to take a look at the less costly arrangement they offer. You can anticipate the most less quality, minimal execution from such an arrangement. While it would appear that you can get the Single Shared Hosting plan for $2.95 each month, that is just in the event that you prepay for three entire years, which means you're really paying $106.20. 100 bucks or so for a very long time of facilitating is certifiably not a terrible arrangement, yet can be confounding. On the off chance that you need just a single year, you're charging $59.40 to your card (which is $4.95 each month). It's more costly, however not horrible. While $2.95 or even $4.95/mo is anything but an awful cost for basic Hosting, the truth of the matter is, your cost will hop by more than triple what you paid when you joined. I rambled about lock-in and changing expenses in my How to make a site:
WHAT THE BASIC PLAN INCLUDES Most base end plans are for one site, and Bluehost is the same. A base website is intended for a business or person who needs a fundamental online presence. That is a lot of pages, some item or administration pictures, and a ton of text. In the event that you need to run complex web applications, or you anticipate a great deal of traffic, an essential website isn't for you. In case you're simply attempting to begin with an online presence, beginning essentially is a decent approach. In this arrangement, we're assessing the most affordable program each Hosting provider offers. That will be what most of the purchasers will need, and it will give us decent knowledge of the organization. Bluehost offers various pretty strong highlights in their Basic arrangement. The base arrangement incorporates 50GB site space (maximizing at an incredible 200,000 records), five email accounts, 100MB of email storage (which is quite low in case you're dynamic), up to 500 messages sent each hour, one free area enlistment (for a year), 25 subdomains, an essential SSL certificate, and what they portray as unmetered bandwidth. There are a few successes, most remarkably that even the basic plan is hosted on SSDs. Regardless of whether a site is utilizing storing (which lessens the load on a server), having quick drives is consistently an or more. Bluehost has 24/7 chat and phone support and Bluehost offers a 30-day moneyback guarantee. Overall conclusion I was agreeably astounded. Bluehost, by examination, is practically cutting-edge. Their entry and surprisingly their execution of upsells in the WordPress dashboard show a lot of thought and thought of the general client experience. Despite the fact that Bluehost is marginally more exorbitant than HostGator ($0.20 each month) in the underlying term and significantly more after term recharging ($2.00 more each month), I would suggest Bluehost over HostGator.Truth be told, I'd put Bluehost into the running against the other base-level plans I've inspected. It offers a basic staging server mechanism instrument, sensibly quick page loads, current security libraries, multifaceted validation, and a relaxed way to deal with upsells. It's not terrible by any means. Presently, perhaps they can show their kin as HostGator to get along with others.

10 Best GoDaddy Alternatives for Hosting & Domains
Tumblr media
Are you becoming dissatisfied with GoDaddy’s web hosting and domain registration services? Thankfully, there are dozens of wonderful alternatives to GoDaddy. Use this report to know what to look for in web hosting and domain registration services. Afterwards, see our top GoDaddy alternative picks for 2020.
Table of Contents
Website Hosting at a Quick Glance
In order for the Internet to run properly, there needs to be a computer equipped to send information to other computers. These computers are known as servers and are specifically designed to host web content on the Internet. When you build a website, all the information is hosted on a server, and there are a few different ways that a server can house that information. If you are looking for alternatives to GoDaddy web hosting, you are likely looking for either shared or VPS hosting. The two other hosting types - dedicated and cloud - are more complicated and expensive, but we’ll be sure to include some information on those types, as well. Shared Hosting In our recent guide on VPS versus hosting, we likened shared hosting to living in a dorm or hostel. The website shares hosting space with other websites on the server. Generally, this is a reliable form of web hosting for basic or uncomplicated websites. However, if another website starts using a lot of hard drive space, your website (and others on the server) begin to slow down. There’s only so much shared space to go around. If your website needs more space, bandwidth, and site security, then you need to upgrade to VPS hosting. VPS Hosting VPS hosting is more expensive than shared, but it does a better job of ensuring your website’s performance. Instead of living in a dorm room, your website now lives in its own apartment. Even though there are multiple websites operating on the same server, no site is sharing space with another.Websites that provide web services, ecommerce, collect data, etc. need the benefits offered by VPS hosting. Once your site needs a server all to itself, you should upgrade to dedicated hosting.
Web Hosting with GoDaddy
GoDaddy can be affordable, with shared plans starting at $5.99/month and VPS plans starting at $24.99/month. For the big league sites, dedicated hosting plans begin at $89.99/month.Renewal costs increase for shared and dedicated plans. However, GoDaddy’s perks (such as free Office 365 software/email) are no longer free after your courtesy first year subscription. For this reason, one of the biggest complaints by customers is how much their costs increase after the first year.Even the most basic bundles include a free domain and a year’s subscription to an Office 365 email account (as noted above). Like most leading web hosting providers, GoDaddy grants unmetered bandwidth, meaning that no one is tracking how much bandwidth you’re using (hosting providers that do monitor the bandwidth usually intend to charge you for the amount of bandwidth you use). SSL certificates are free the first year, as well.Users have many different plans to choose from, including hosting bundles specifically for WordPress sites, ecommerce, and more. While GoDaddy does most things well, as you would expect of a leading web hosting provider, they fail to overly impress in any capacity.Happy users praise GoDaddy’s loading speed (particularly for VPS and dedicated hosting), along with its full array of starter tools. There are mixed reviews about GoDaddy’s customer support. On the one hand, they make extensive use of online chat and provide a phone number to call customer service. Both are available any time of day or night for all customers. However, many complain that it can be difficult to find the help you need initially as you work through the online help system. As a result, many are falling away from one of the biggest domain registration and web hosting brands in the market. GoDaddy is a respectable web host, but there are other great players in the market today. GoDaddy Pros and Cons GoDaddy ProsUser friendlyGreat for new website creatorsLow prices for basic plansOffers all hosting types excluding cloud hostingWell-integrated with Microsoft productivity softwareGoDaddy ConsAdd ons add upHefty renewal costsNo cloud hostingIn nearly every respect, good but not stellarSpotty customer service What Are the Best GoDaddy Alternatives? That is to say, if you are looking to upgrade from shared hosting to VPS, make sure you are researching which providers offer the best VPS hosting plans, and so on with dedicated, cloud, etc.Next, we are going to dive into the specific offerings of these seven hosts. We'll cover the pros and cons of each to help you can find a plan that fits your unique needs.
#1 Bluehost
WordPress users will prefer Bluehost most of the time. WordPress recommends users to Bluehost, as the two are long-time affiliates. In fact, experts in the hosting industry recommend Bluehost as the top choice for beginners.Experienced web developers love Bluehost for its security features, as well as its impeccable uptime. That means that Bluehost sites rarely go down. This year, Bluehost declared an uptime rate of above 99%. Bluehost Pros and Cons Bluehost ProsCheaper than GoDaddyWordPress’s favorite hosting providerAlmost 100% uptimeFree domain and SSL certificateGreat security featuresBluehost ConsUnreliable backup servicesRenewal costs are high on shared plans

#2 Siteground
WordPress users love SiteGround, as it offers optimized shared hosting for WordPress starting under $5/month. It also comes with plenty of free add-ons for web hosting plans. SiteGround is great for beginners and experts alike.SiteGround’s customer service is outstanding, and as long as you’re willing to commit to a full year (or more) membership, you’ll save a lot of money. However, if you prefer the option to go month-to-month, you’ll need to look elsewhere. However, you can take advantage of their 1-month trial before committing to a full year. Siteground Pros and Cons Siteground ProsShared hosting is cheaper than GoDaddyTop notch customer serviceSSL certificates included in all plansGenerous bundles with free toolsIntegrates well with WordPressSimple bundle options (Startup, GrowBig, and GoGeek)Siteground ConsNo month-to-month plansNo VPS hostingPoor storage options on lower plansNo free domains

#3 HostGator
We have found that Hostgator offers the overall best bundle deals. The promotional rates are great, but they are limited to 36-month subscriptions. That being said, you do get your promotional rate locked in for 3 years, so there is a positive trade off. If the upfront cost makes you uncomfortable, Hostgator will let you change your mind within 45 days of your purchase.Your site will get backed up regularly. Also, you won’t have to accidentally spend more than you intended during setup, since most of the “extra” features in web hosting are already included in your subscription. HostGator Pros and Cons HostGator ProsCheaper than GoDaddy for first 3 yearsAmazing bundles with “unlimited/free everything” even on the lowest plansConsistent backup services includedMoney back guarantee lasts for 45 daysLive chat customer support is one of the bestHostGator ConsBest prices only available for 3-year subscriptionsMajor increase in prices after promotion endsCloud hosting is shared SSD onlyChallenging to configure VPS or dedicated hosting

#4 Inmotion
For technical purposes, Inmotion does a great job of including competitive backend features, including regular backups and remote access to a Share Shell server. The SSD build out is available to all, including those on shared plans. If you’re not a technical person, you’ll find their customer service easy to work with. As a matter of fact, many users report being able to secure better promotional and renewal rates when discussing budget concerns with their customer service rep.Common complaints were that the shared hosting plans did not perform as well as competitors. However, for VPS and above, Inmotion is one of the best in the business. Inmotion Pros and Cons Inmotion ProsSSD infrastructure Efficient backup systemGreat customer service (phone, chat, and email)Low price hikes at subscription renewals (with the possibility of convincing an Inmotion rep to give you a discount when it’s time to renew)Money back guarantee is good for 90 daysInmotion ConsLow promotional ratesShared hosting services are not stellar

#5 A2 Hosting
A2 boasts their fast Turbo Servers, available to all users, including those on shared plans. It also competes handily with Bluehost’s uptime rate. In other words, whether you’re using the bottom shared plan (Lite) or the managed dedicated plan, your website performance will be excellent. For developer experts, you will save thousands of dollars using one of A2’s unmanaged servers, specifically the unmanaged VPS plans. All in all, it is hard to find much to critique about A2 Hosting. It is a consistent favorite for those switching from GoDaddy. A2 Hosting Pros and Cons A2 Hosting ProsCheaper hosting than GoDaddySuper fast Turbo ServersAdequate customer supportGreat uptime rateAmazingly low prices for those that want to manage their own VPS serverA2 Hosting ConsNotable price hike after introductory price expiresOnly real cost savings occur with 1-3-year subscriptions

#6 Greengeeks
Did you know that websites have a carbon footprint? One website can be responsible for 5,000 pounds of CO2, which is essentially the carbon footprint of taking your pickup on a winding cross-country road trip across the United States. It is for this exact reason that Greengeeks founders decided to build a web hosting business that was 100% eco-friendly.For some time, Greengeeks has struggled to keep up with the performance and agility of their competitors. But that is slowly changing, and now they are able to turn the heads of other leading web hosting providers.Still, they still have a few kinks to work out, especially on upgraded servers like VPS and dedicated hosting. It offers no managed server hosting and lacks many of the backend features that a website requiring VPS hosting would appreciate. Greengeeks Pros and Cons Greengeeks ProsCheaper hosting than GoDaddyOffers a competitive bundle of free services (domain, website migration, and more)Completely eco-friendly web hostingShared hosting performance is great No price hikes on VPS or dedicated server hosting renewalsGreengeeks ConsMediocre customer supportMajor increase in shared hosting prices after promotion endsVPS and dedicated hosting performance are less than stellar

#7 Namecheap
Namecheap is especially cheap, as one would expect. Thankfully, they are not cheap in their hosting service and bundles. If your main concern is budget, you will be perfectly pleased with Namecheap.Namecheap is actually a domain registration provider. As it happens, they provide adequate web hosting services. So of course they’re going to throw in a free domain name with a hosting subscription (though you may want to go ahead and invest a little bit into a good domain name that doesn’t end in .website).For VPS and dedicated hosting, there are a few things to be aware of. For one, all hosting is unmanaged, so you better be able to manage your own server or pay someone else to set it up. Namecheap Pros and Cons Namecheap ProsCheapest by far of all the hosting providers listed3 websites allowed on lowest planDecent shared hosting performanceRenewal cost bumps are relatively lowNamecheap ConsNot great for WordPressSSL certificate price increases each year for 3 yearsDoes not guarantee regular backups

Domain Registration at a Quick Glance
In business today, entrepreneurs are in the habit of checking to see if their brand or business name is available as a domain before completing their entity paperwork. Why? Because your domain is your website name. It is the name between the www. and .com/.org/.biz/etc…Without a domain name, your site would be unreachable except to those that can remember and access the server’s IP address. If it sounds ridiculously technical, that’s because it is.Domain registrars are those that sell available domain names. It is a marketplace for never-before-used domains, formerly-owned domains, and in-demand domains that people have purchased in order to resell. While not nearly as vital as your web hosting provider, choosing the right domain registrar can save you time and money. Thankfully, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) provides accreditation to those sites that are safe. Before domain registration organized, many domain name owners/shoppers got scammed. Domain Registration with GoDaddy GoDaddy is a well-established name in the business. Their main advantage is the ability to buy a domain name from a leading registrar and then be able to secure reliable web hosting at the same time. But GoDaddy generally costs more than its competitors, and they charge for most add-ons.GoDaddy ProsGood deals on both hosting and domain registration when bundledGreat customer supportPlenty of great add-ons if you have the budgetGoDaddy ConsExpensive compared to competitors when just purchasing a domainNo free domain privacy
Top 3 GoDaddy Alternatives for Domain Registration
Thanks to a mature market and ICANN accreditation, there are many wonderful alternatives to GoDaddy. Many of them also offer domain and hosting bundles comparable (or better) than what GoDaddy provides. Here are our top 3 domain registration alternative picks.
#1 Namecheap
Even though Namecheap offers web hosting (see above), they are more well-known for their domain registration services. Shopping for domain names on Namecheap’s website is easy and fun. And of course, being able to bundle your domain with web hosting is a nice touch.Domain names are generally cheaper when purchased from Namecheap (hence the name). Prices start at $.49 per domain. All domain names come with free Whois domain privacy.Namecheap is very clear about your initial and renewal price before you check out. Also, it doesn’t automatically set you up with auto-renewal. This gives you the autonomy to turn it on or off yourself. It is often a source of consternation that domain registrars will set your auto-renewal to “on” and make it difficult for you to find where to turn it off.Namecheap ProsCheaper domain registration than GoDaddyTransparent pricingFree domain privacyNamecheap ConsYou may want to consider a different hosting provider to keep hosting and domain registration separate

#2 Domain.com
For many, Domain.com feels like GoDaddy, only less expensive. For instance, domain privacy isn’t a free add-on with Domain.com, but it costs less than what you would have to pay at GoDaddy. For .com domains, prices start just under $10/domain.Domain.com also provides web hosting and a web builder. Their customer support is above average.Domain.com Pros Cheaper .com domain names than GoDaddy Great customer service Cheaper add-ons than GoDaddy Bundles available for domain name and web hosting Domain.com ConsNo domain privacy includedNot a contender for one of the better web hosting providers out there
Tumblr media
Try Domain.com
#3 Bluehost
For those looking to get a free domain name bundled with web hosting for their WordPress site, Bluehost should be one of your top choices. Their .com domains start at $11.99 - which is about average.Domain privacy is not free, but it is cheap. Bluehost’s “domain privacy + protection” add-on inserts their information in your place on Whois directories. This protects you from hackers, telemarketers, and more.Bluehost ProsFree domain name bundled with low-priced web hosting make it more affordable than GoDaddyOptimized for WordPress sitesDomain privacy plus protection is only $.99/monthBluehost ConsNo free domain privacyDomain pricing may not be a good deal if you aren’t wanting to bundle with web hosting

Closing Thoughts
GoDaddy isn’t going away anytime soon, and many experts prefer it over the competition. But if you are like many who are growing frustrated with GoDaddy’s mounting renewal costs and “jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none” approach to their industry, there are many great brands to choose from. What works best for one website may be a poor fit for another. Make sure you know what you want your website to accomplish and do your research. It is a great peace of mind to be able to settle in with the right provider for the long-term, rather than haplessly bouncing around to different providers until you find one you like. H&R Block’s pricing tiers closely match TurboTax’s, although H&R Block prices itself about $15-$20 lower for each tier. H&R Block Navigation
H&R Block prices itself as a premium tax software, but the Navigation doesn’t quite match the pricing. The software also has short “questionnaires” at the beginning of each section. These  “questionnaires” help the software cut out irrelevant sections of the software, and guide you to the important parts of the software.
The questionnaire worked well, but the guided navigation felt a bit clunky after that. The software moved me through W-2 forms, then asked more information about where I earned money, followed by prompting me to enter 1099-INT information. It seemed to jump around too much in my opinion.
Where H&R Block’s navigation makes a lot of sense is in form entry. The software guides users on how to enter information quickly and accurately. When necessary, the software breaks up forms into a few screens (to prevent entry mistakes), but you don’t need to do unnecessary clicking.
The software also allows users to navigate through the software themselves (once they’ve gone through the guided option). This can be helpful if you missed something or didn’t have all the forms you needed. It also includes helpful summaries at the end of each section.
H&R Block Ease Of Use
H&R Block is one of the easiest online filing software packages. It allows users to upload tons of forms including 1099-MISC, 1099-INT, W-2 forms and much more. If the form is standard, you can upload it in H&R Block.
The other thing that makes H&R Block an easy to use software package is the language used throughout the software. The software does not assume users have robust tax knowledge. They use language that makes sense to normal people, and they link to helpful articles throughout the software.
Additionally, all users can get free LiveChat support if they struggle with the software.

H&R Block Knowledge Articles
In addition to the articles sprinkled throughout the software, H&R Block has a forum for users to ask questions, and a library of more in depth articles. A simple search will bring up a curated assortment of relevant articles for most users. It’s also important to note that H&R Block’s paying customers do not have to rely on the articles alone. Paying customers can get access to the following help:
Ask a tax pro (inside the product) is available during tax season weekdays from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. CT, and on weekends from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. CT.
Technical support chat (inside the product) is available 24/7.
Technical support via phone is available weekdays from 7 a.m. to midnight CT, and on weekends from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT.
Finally, for an additional fee you can get a Tax Pro Review, where an H&R Block employee reviews your return once you’re done with it (remotely—you don’t have to go to an office! Win!)
Note: Tax Pro Review isn't live until January, so stay tuned.
H&R Block Online Extras
If you file your taxes through H&R Block online, you can opt to put some or all of your return on an Amazon gift card. When you do that, H&R Block will add 4% to your refund.
Check out the H&R Block deal on Amazon here.
H&R Block also offers free Tax Identity Theft monitoring and restoration help if someone steals your identity.
Can H&R Block Help Me With My Crypto Investments?
H&R Block Online has instructions that carefully explain how users can file taxes on their cryptocurrency trades. H&R Block also does ask the question "Have you ever bought, sold, or transacted in cryptocurrency?" as required by the IRS.
However, the software treats it like other capital gains activities.
H&R Block Tax Pro Go Virtual Tax Service
H&R Block also has a virtual tax prep service called Tax Pro Go. If you want pro to do your taxes, but still want to do them online or at home, this is a great hybrid.
With this service, you can book at tax pro online, see the price, upload your documents, and have your return filed all from the comfort of your own home.
As of writing this, they expect to have your taxes prepared and filed within 5 days of submitting all your information online. However, as it gets busier and closer to tax season, that could change.
This service is a premium service, with prices from $49 to $329 for the service. However, that still is better than many CPAs will charge.
This service is very similar to those offered by Picnic Tax, Visor Tax or Circle CPA.
H&R Block In-Store And Tax Refund Advance
H&R Block is most well-known for their large network of stores that have tax preparers and tax professionals able to assist. Plus, H&R Block is also known for having some of the best tax refund advance products available.
In store, customers can expect to have an expert tax professional prepare and file their taxes. This does cost much more than the online products offered here.
The Tax Refund Advance is available up to $3,500, and is available starting January 4, 2020 in stores.

Who Should Use H&R Block 2019-2020?
In 2020, H&R Block Online deserves to be on your short list for tax filing software. The free offering is particularly impressive (including student loan interest and HSA forms). Additionally, the Premium edition of the software could offer a good value for self-employed people, landlords, and side-hustlers who want to simplify their tax life.
However, H&R Block is a premium tax software with a premium price. If you’re looking for a bargain consider either TaxSlayer Classic or TaxHawk for lower costs with acceptable performance.

Bluehost Review: Good performance, well-designed UX, up-to-date security 2021
There's an explanation Bluehost is perhaps the most well-known hosting provider in the world. We take an in-depth look at what it resembles utilizing the help and burrow somewhere inside its execution.
It appears as though there is a practically limitless number of hosting providers who will serve your site for a month-to-month fee. In the best web hosting provider for 2021, I highlighted 15 providers that offer a wide scope of plans.

While it would appear that you can get the Single Shared Hosting plan for $2.95 each month, that is just if you prepay for three entire years, which means you're really paying $106.20. 100 bucks or so for a very long time of facilitating is certifiably not a terrible arrangement, yet can be confounding.
WHAT THE BASIC PLAN INCLUDES
Most base end plans are for one site, and Bluehost is the same.
A base website is intended for a business or person who needs a fundamental online presence. That is a lot of pages, some item or administration pictures, and a ton of text. If you need to run complex web applications, or you anticipate a great deal of traffic, an essential website isn't for you.
Overall conclusion
I was agreeably astounded. It's practically difficult to accept that Bluehost and HostGator are part of a similar organization. HostGator slapped malicious upsells on everything, utilizing their service as an annoyance.
Bluehost, by examination, is practically cutting-edge. Their entry and surprisingly their execution of upsells in the WordPress dashboard show a lot of thought and thought of the general client experience.
Although Bluehost is marginally more exorbitant than HostGator ($0.20 each month) in the underlying term and significantly more after term recharging ($2.00 more each month), I would suggest Bluehost over HostGator.
Truth be told, I'd put Bluehost into the running against the other base-level plans I've inspected. It offers a basic staging server mechanism instrument, sensibly quick page loads, current security libraries, multifaceted validation, and a relaxed way to deal with upsells. It's not terrible by any means. Presently, perhaps they can show their kin as HostGator to get along with others.

2019 Tax Preparation: What to Consider From Deductions to Online Filing Services
With more than two months of 2019 already gone, Tax Season is officially in bloom. This year brings a heightened focus on tax returns thanks to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which taxpayers are feeling the effects of for the first time. Beyond those changes, there’s still plenty of other things to consider when planning to file your 2018 returns.
From determining whether you should be itemizing your tax deductions to deciding what online tax preparation service is right for you, here’s a look at what you should be thinking about as April 15th draws near:
Standard Deduction vs. Itemized Deductions
One choice that might factor into your filing options is whether you plan to take the standard personal tax deduction or elect to itemize your deductions instead. As of last year, approximately 70% of taxpayers simply took the so-called Standard Deductions, although homeowners, charitable givers, and others may have found that itemizing was more lucrative. However changes to the standard deduction starting with the 2018 tax year may increase the number of Americans using this deduction.
As it turns out, determining whether you’ll want to itemize your deduction or not may play a role in helping you decide which tax preparation and filing option is right for you. With that in mind, here’s a brief overview of what you need to know about the standard deduction versus itemizing.
Standard Deduction
Understanding deductions in general
Before we get into the specifics of the standard deduction as well as itemized deductions, it’s important to understand what separates tax deductions from tax credits. Put simply, tax deductions are subtracted from your taxable income while tax credits are directly reflected in your tax bill. For example, if you grossed $40,000 in 2018 and took the standard deduction of $12,000, your taxable income would be $28,000. You would then be taxed on that figure instead of the full $28,000 — although, in this example, the deduction would move you from the 22% to 12% tax brackets, which obviously leads to additional savings.
Meanwhile credits serve as dollar for dollar reductions in your tax obligations. Take, for example, the Savers Credit that rewards lower wage earners for making contributions to their retirement accounts. On the surface, credits can be more lucrative than deductions but, as mentioned, deductions can be especially important when they bring you down to a lower tax bracket.
Understanding marginal tax rates Something else we should address is how tax brackets actually work. The truth is that, while moving to a lower tax bracket will save you money, the difference might not be as large as you might suspect. That’s because the U.S. utilizes marginal tax rates.
Let’s return to our example of someone who made $40,000 in a year and claimed a standard deduction of $12,000 to arrive at a taxable income of $28,000. Under the 2018 tax brackets, that would land them in the 12% tax rate category. However this doesn’t mean that all $28,000 of their income would be taxed at 12%. Instead their first $9,525 — the limit for the first tax bracket — would be taxed at 10%, while any income over $9,525 would be taxes at the 12% rate.
To drive home this point, were the $28,000 all taxed at 12%, that would amount to a tax obligation of $3,360. In actuality, the first $9,525 would be taxed at 10% ($952.50) while the other $18,475 is taxed at 12% ($2,217) for a total obligation of $3169.50. This difference becomes even more significant as your income rises into higher brackets, which is why it’s important to truly understand how your tax rates are assessed.
Personal deductions and business deductions
Another important note for freelancers and self-employed individuals is that business deductions are separate from personal ones. In fact it’s likely that you’ll not only take deductions for business expenses, mileage, ect. but will also be eligible for certain personal deductions. Because of this it’s important to keep your records organized and to separate your business finances from your personal ones. This is where software and online solutions such as Quickbooks Self-Employed can come in handy and make managing your taxes a bit easier.
Changes made to this year’s tax returns
As mentioned, the majority of American taxpayers already utilized the standard deduction when filing their returns but that figure is likely to increase this year. That’s because, for many, the standard deduction has nearly doubled, making it less likely that itemized deductions will exceed the standard. Here how the deduction for 2018 tax year differed from 2017:
Status 2018 tax year   2017 tax year Single individual $12,000 $6,350 Married filing separately $12,000 $6,350 Head of household $18,000 $9,350 Married filing jointly $24,000 $12,700
Given this change, even if you’ve previously itemized deductions, you’ll want to double check that this is still the best option for you.
Itemized Deductions
Homeowners
In order to incentivize house buying, the IRS allows homeowners to deduct the mortgage interest they pay in a year from their taxable income. As a result this perk alone may exceed the standard deduction. It’s worth noting that the recently-passed tax bill will also bring changes to this rule, with the mortgage interest deduction cap lowering from $1 million to $750,000.
Charitable donation
Those who donate a sizeable portion of their income to charity might also find value in itemizing their deductions. Donations to qualifying nonprofits including churches and other organizations can be deducted from your taxable income provided that you itemize these deductions. To confirm that your favorite non-profit is eligible to receive tax-deductible donations, you can use the IRS’s Exempt Organizations Select Check tool.
Medical Expenses
While the current tax law penalizes individuals who don’t maintain health insurance, it does allow you to deduct some of your medical bills from your taxable income. However these expenses can only be deducted if they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income and excludes any expenses you were reimbursed for (be it by an insurer, employer, etc.). Furthermore that figure will rise to 10% of your AGI starting in 2019.
Online Tax Preparation Service Options
When it comes to preparing and filing your taxes, there are now several online resources you can turn to. Add in the speed and simplicity of E-File and you can now complete your entire tax return without setting foot outside your house. Given this abundance of options, it’s worth taking a look at several different services and what separates them from the rest of the pack.
Keep in mind that many of these services allow you to start your return for free, only paying when you decide to file. Therefore, if you’re ultimately unsure which option is best, you may be able to get hands-on with a couple of options before making your final decision. With that out of the way, let’s dive into a few popular online tax preparation options.
H&R Block
Perhaps the most recognizable name on this list is H&R Block, which runs a number of brick-and-mortar tax preparation centers in addition to having online DIY products. The first of these products is their free online plan, offering $0 federal and state return filing. From there, H&R Block offers the Deluxe package for $22.49, Premium package for $37.49, a Self-Employed package for $59.99, and a new Tax Pro Review plan for $119.99. Note: for each option aside from their free online file plan, an additional $36.99 fee is charged for each state filing.
The difference in each of these packages is the number of tax situations they support and the help they provide. For example, while the free online plan offers technical support by chat, unlimited tax advice by chat doesn’t kick in until the Deluxe package. Meanwhile those using apps like Stride might need to upgrade to the Premium package, which supports expense imports. Finally, for those who want to file a Schedule C with business deductions, the Self-Employed or Tax Pro Review options will be required.
One change H&R Block has made from previous years is that pro tax review is now only available as its own package instead of being an add on. The good news is that the price of the other packages has come down some to compensate for the change. As a result, the new Tax Pro Review package still comes in cheaper than the previous Self-Employed package with the tax pro review upgrade did last year.
TurboTax
While H&R Block has made a name for themselves in the storefront tax preparation business, TurboTax has been a go-to software option for several years. Naturally that reputation now extends to the Internet, with TurboTax offering several online services. Similar to H&R Block, these options start with a Free Edition package featuring $0 federal and state returns, a $59.99 Deluxe package, $79.99 Premier package, $119.99 Self-Employed package, and finally TurboTax Live packages ranging from $79.99 to $199.99. Note that all of the options excluding Free Edition also charge $39.99 per state filing.
The downside of TurboTax’s Free Edition is that it only supports a limited number of forms and only allows for W2 income. Those wishing to itemize deductions will need to upgrade to the Deluxe version of TurboTax online, which also searches 350 deductions and credits to help you maximize your refund. For support with Schedule D and Schedule E, you may need to upgrade to the Premier edition. Finally those needing to file a Schedule C will need to opt for the Self-Employed package.
For small business owners who use Quickbook Self-Employed for their expense and record keeping, TurboTax does have one big advantage. With both services falling under the Intuit umbrella, you can easily import your mileage and expenses from Quickbook Self-Employed when you use the Self-Employed online tax preparation option.
Lastly, TurboTax Live allows you to reach a CPA or EA live and on-demand as you complete your return. This option supports complex tax situations and allows you to have your questions answered along the way. Additionally users who sign up for this option will have their finished return reviewed by a professional to make sure everything looks good.
Credit Karma Tax
If you’re a savvy credit consumer, you’re likely familiar with Credit Karma and their free credit score services. In 2016 they expanded their offerings to include free tax preparation and filing support. Credit Karma Tax boasts free federal and state filing, 24/7 help along the way, and more — all wrapped in CK’s slick user interface. Furthermore the site promises no upselling and, in fact, has no paid options to upgrade to. One big downside to Credit Karma Tax in previous years was that certain state returns were not yet supported, although that has seemingly changed. Nevertheless some reviewers have noted bugs that are likely a symptom of the service’s infancy. That said it does stay true to its “free as free gets” promise and will hopefully improve with future tax seasons.
Last year, Dyer News contributor Kyle Burbank actually filed his self-employed return with Credit Karma Tax and shared his experience. However this year he came across one potential flaw, which is that 1099 payers need to have an actual EIN as the Social Security number format is not supported. In other words, all of your clients must be businesses and not individuals to use this option. Small hiccups like this are why some self-employed individuals and other filers may prefer more established services over this relatively young offering.
TaxSlayer
For those willing to take a chance on a site with less name recognition in order to save, TaxSlayer may be an option for you. Unfortunately, while several of their other offerings are priced a bit lower than H&R Block or TurboTax, TaxSlayer’s free option seems to be lacking. For one it only supports Form 1040. However TaxSlayer’s other options — Classic at $17, Premium at $37, and Self-Employed at $47, support all major forms. On top of those numbers, each state return filed will add $29 to the Classic, Premium, and Self-Employed options.
As far as differences between the various tiers go, the biggest difference comes between the Classic and Premium options. The Premium level is where support options such as Ask a Tax Pro, live chat, and Audit Assistance come in. Overall, despite a free option that is comparatively lacking, TaxSlayer’s packages not only come in at much lower price-points than some of the big guys but their state returns are also cheaper to file. TaxSlayer presents a strong case for self-employed individuals who aren’t concerned about importing from Quickbooks, although the now $47 package (previously $55) no longer includes a free state filing.
TaxAct
Like TaxSlayer, TaxAct also offers a number of competitively-priced options for individuals with a variety of tax needs. In addition to a free option (or “I
Tumblr media
Free”) with support for federal forms 1040 as well as free state filing, TaxAct also has a $14.95 Basic+ plan, a $47.95 Deluxe+ plan, $57.95 Premier+ plan, and a $77.95 Self-Employed+ plan. State returns also add an extra $19.95 to the I
Tumblr media
Free and Basic+ options while state filings for the Deluxe+, Premier+, and Self-Employed plans add $39.95.
Aside from having among the highest per-state return cost on the list, some of TaxAct’s base packages do come in a bit cheaper than similar plans from those big players. Incidentally the company has also seen the biggest changes to their pricing since last year when they only had four package options and their free option included a state filing. In any case, Basic+ includes e-mail support, deductions, and more. All packages also allow you to import last year’s returns from a PDF to help jumpstart your 2018 filing.
Those wishing to itemize deductions will need to upgrade to the Deluxe+ plan, which also includes one-on-one phone support. Premier+ supports a number of tax situations including Schedule D investments and Schedule E rental income along with prioritized in-app chat while the Self-Employed+ plan seems to includes all of these features plus support for Schedule C. As a result, this could be a decent “middle of the road” option for filers.
FreeTaxUSA
Another alternative to the big guys is FreeTaxUSA. Despite its name, the site only offers support for preparing and filing federal returns without charge while state returns cost $12.95. That said, the free federal filing applies to several tax situations including self-employment and support for investments. Moreover, although there is no free state option like with some other services, FreeTaxUSA’s price per state filing is the cheapest of the options on our list.
For those seeking a little more than FreeTaxUSA’s no-frills, straightforward, DIY basic level, there is a Deluxe option for an additional $6.99. This add-on includes priority support, audit assist protection, and the ability to file amended returns at no cost. However, even with that support, reviews suggest this might not be the best option for those who are less confident in their tax filing abilities. So while FreeTaxUSA is certainly budget friendly, those willing to pay more for guidance and peace of mind may want to look elsewhere.
Brick-and-mortar options
If online services just aren’t for you, there is another way. As you probably already know if you’ve ever spotted a sign-twirling Statue of Liberty in your area, there are still plenty of brick-and-mortar businesses that specialize in helping you file your tax return and maximize your refund. These range from big chains like the aforementioned H&R Block to independent CPAs that can give you one-on-one support with your taxes. Depending on the business, this option may be more expensive than the online services, but at the end the day it may be worth it to let someone else handle the whole tax mess for you.
Save Even More on Tax Prep Services
Something I found interesting when updating this post for 2019 was a number of the services actually lowered their prices from the 2018 season. Perhaps this is due to increased competition from completely free tools like Credit Karma or changes to the tax law that requires fewer people to itemize deductions. In either case it’s good news for taxpayers.
What’s also good news is there may be ways you can save even more or compare different services without paying upfront.
Cash back tools If you’re a user of Ebates (now Rakuten), you may be interested to know that several of the online tax preparation sites have cash back offers you can take advantage of. Here’s what was available as of March 2019:
H&R Block: 9% cash back on online filing packages
TurboTax: Up to 7.5% cash back (7.5% on Deluxe, Premier and Self-Employed Editions, 2.0% Cash Back on TurboTax Live Deluxe, Premier and Self-Employed Editions)
TaxAct: 10% cash back
TaxSlayer: $10 cash back (note: flat dollar rate, not percentage)
FreeTaxUSA: 25% cash back
On top of these cash back deals, Ebates.com and Rakuten.com list some coupons you may be able to utilize in addition to your cash back offer. There you’ll also find some details on a few exclusions to these deals, so be sure to read up carefully to make sure your chosen product qualifies.
Of course, if you don’t already use Ebates/Rakuten, you can sign-up to take advantage of these deals and many more. Plus, when you sign-up and spend at least $25 on a qualifying purchase, you’ll earn your choice of a $10 Walmart gift card or have $10 added to your cash back balance. The choice is yours.
Try before you buy Understandably, trying to choose the best tax prep service just based on a few feature descriptions can be difficult. That’s why it’s important to note that many of these platforms allow you to sign-up for free, only charging you when you complete your work and are ready to file. Because of this, you may be able to try out different options hands-on without needing to spend money upfront.
Along those same lines, if you don’t have a ton of experience with filing your own returns, it may be worth trying a couple of different services just to ensure that you’re getting the maximum refund or lowest payment (legally) possible. Sometimes just the way one service asks for information as opposed to another can cause you to overlook potential deductions. Thus, even if you ultimately choose to file on a less-expensive service, perhaps doing a “test run” on another platform can help bring attention to more potential deductions that you can add to your return.
With 2018 tax returns due in just a few short weeks, now is the time to start thinking seriously about your tax filing plan. The first step is to determine whether you’ll need to itemize your deductions or whether the standard deduction will suffice. Next, you can determine which (if any) online tax preparation services meet your needs or elect to hire a local tax professional to take over the job for you. Plus, thanks to cash back offers and “try before you buy” policies, you may be able to save even more. Whatever you end up electing to do, just make sure that your return is postmarked by April 15th, 2019. Happy Tax Season!

DIY or rent a professional: How must you do your taxes?
Tumblr media
January is one among my favourite months. The craziness of the vacations is over, I’ve received my targets for the yr forward laid out, spring is on the way in which. There’s only one factor that upsets my zen — it’s additionally time to begin fascinated with taxes. Let’s face it, except you’re an accountant, doing taxes is nobody’s concept of a great time. In a 2018 TD Ameritrade survey, 47 % of People mentioned they’d moderately clear out their storage than do taxes, and 35 % mentioned they’d moderately pay a go to to the DMV. Sadly, submitting your taxes isn’t a chore you will get round. The query is, what’s one of the simplest ways to do it? You’ve primarily received 3 ways to strategy it: Crunch the numbers and fill out paper formsLet tax software program run the calculations for youHire a tax skilled to do the heavy lifting Every one requires a unique dedication of money and time and comes with each execs and cons. Right here’s what you'll want to know to make your alternative.
Choice #1: DIY a paper return
Accuracy: Potential for errors could also be increased in case you’re not double- and triple-checking your workValue: FreeTime: Easy returns can take a few hours; extra advanced returns can take per week or extra to organizeWho it is perhaps proper for: Tax filers who've easy returns or don’t thoughts an extended wait for his or her refund (six weeks for paper returns versus three for digital returns) Submitting a paper return appears slightly old school on this digital age. However, it would attraction to you in case you similar to doing issues by hand or you may have a simple return. “I’ve all the time filed on paper and I don’t plan to cease. I’m not snug utilizing computer systems with private data.” Beverly Okay., Flower Mound, TX. The largest benefit is that it’s fully free. You'll be able to normally discover the federal and state tax varieties you want at your native library or put up workplace. Relying on how sophisticated your taxes are, you would possibly be capable of fill out the varieties in a number of hours and drop them within the mail. Sounds easy sufficient, however there are some downsides, beginning with the potential for errors. The general error fee for paper returns is 21%, which implies you may have a 1 in 5 shot at getting one thing incorrect. One thing easy like transposing a quantity in your earnings might end in an even bigger tax invoice or a smaller refund. Even in case you get all of the numbers and decimal factors in the precise locations, you’re nonetheless relying by yourself tax data and what you'll be able to glean from the web to finalize your return. If there’s one thing you don’t perceive, that may add time to the method. Making a incorrect guess or counting on incorrect data might end in a flawed return and even set off an audit. The opposite main draw back with submitting a paper return is that you simply’ll be ready longer in your refund if Uncle Sam owes you cash. In keeping with the IRS, it could take 6 to eight weeks after your paper return is obtained for a refund to be issued. For those who don’t want the cash for something straight away, that may not be a problem. However in case you’ve received a urgent dwelling restore that must be accomplished otherwise you’re making an attempt to repay some bank card debt, these few weeks can really feel like an eternity.
Choice #2: Use tax submitting software program
Accuracy: Many tax software program applications now include accuracy ensures to reduce the potential for errorsValue: $zero in case you qualify for Free File; as much as $150+ in case you don’tTime: Lower than an hour for easy returns; 1-2 days for extra advanced returnsWho it is perhaps proper for: Tech-savvy filers who wish to save time and don’t thoughts paying slightly extra to make sure accuracy Extra taxpayers are utilizing on-line tax applications to e-file, me included. Over 55 million People ready and e-filed their returns in 2018 and it’s straightforward to see why. E-filing is extra correct, for one factor. The IRS estimates that the error fee for electronically filed returns is only a half a %. On-line tax software program applications typically have checkers or screeners that overview your return and level out errors so you'll be able to repair them earlier than you file. That’s reassuring, particularly in case you’re a first-time filer who’s apprehensive about making a mistake. “I’m in grad faculty, have two part-time jobs and no property. I’m nonetheless fortunately e-filing free of charge and plan to take action so long as they let me. It takes me about ten minutes to do my taxes.” Jessica M., Denver, CO. Most on-line and downloadable tax applications use a query and reply format to information you thru getting ready your return. This system decides which varieties you'll want to fill out and walks you thru it step-by-step, which may be much less time-consuming than submitting on paper. Since I’m a freelancer with enterprise earnings and deductions, it normally takes a few days for me to fully put together my return on-line. Less complicated returns may be accomplished in a jiff. I used tax software program to assist an older relative do her taxes in about 20 minutes. Tax software program may search for any deductions or credit you may need missed, and you will get your return quicker while you e-file. The window for getting a refund through direct deposit is three weeks or much less for most individuals, so there’s much less ready and watching the mailbox for a verify. The draw back, after all, is that except you qualify for the IRS Free File program, you’re going to pay one thing for whichever tax program you employ. The extra sophisticated your return is, the upper the fee typically climbs. Choice #three: Pay a professional
Accuracy: A tax skilled could also be much less prone to make an errorValue: $150 – $500 and up, relying on complexityTime: Nearly none for you however it might take a number of days or perhaps weeks for a tax preparer to complete your returnWho it is perhaps proper for: Enterprise house owners or tax filers with intensive itemized deductions Hiring another person to do your taxes takes the strain off. You don’t need to put within the hours or days making calculations; you drop off your paperwork and return later to choose up your completed return. It could additionally offer you extra peace of thoughts in case you belief your tax preparer to go over the numbers fastidiously and ensure the whole lot is correct. A tax skilled can be higher geared up to deal with trickier returns or tax conditions. For those who not too long ago received married, for instance, you is perhaps questioning whether or not to file collectively or go along with separate returns. Is the Nintendo Switch Launching Too Early?
Breaking Down the Info from the Hybrid Console’s Big Presser
Tumblr media
When Nintendo finally revealed the Switch back in late October, I was left more excited about the company’s future in hardware than I have been in years. Granted, that initial trailer was the idealized vision of the console: it was direct in its messaging while shrewdly omitting any hype-strangling details like battery life, resolution, and, most importantly, price. What we were left with was the exciting prospect of console quality games (like the newest Zelda opus) on a handheld hybrid that features modular controllers; a machine that cobbles together what Nintendo is best at -- forward thinking portability and first-party games so good they stand head and shoulders with the best this industry has to give.
On Thursday, Nintendo began filling in the blanks, setting about to answer (at least some) of the questions fans have had circling in their heads since the system’s unveiling. You can watch the entire conference here but, coming from someone that sat through a livestream of the proceeding -- awaiting something, anything, that signaled Nintendo’s return to form -- I’d recommend just reading up on the cliff notes.
Though the affair was poised in the same fashion as one of Sony’s knockout E3 conferences, Nintendo couldn’t land the same blows. I began the show with more enthusiasm than Nintendo let me leave with. After the abject failure of the Wii U (a console that only managed to push slightly north of 13 million units -- the worst sales in Nintendo’s hardware history barring the Virtual Boy) the Switch needed to be touted as a reckoning. It was Nintendo’s chance to convince the fence-sitters to choose their side of the picket. We didn’t get that Thursday night.
Nintendo has always floundered in the stage show department, though. You’re asking the same company that thought this shit was a good idea to try and wow us in an hour and a half. Nintendo’s like that shy kid at the back of the class: he tests well and always turns in his homework, but the second you ask him to walk up to the board and present, he becomes a mumbling, incoherent mess. Of course they shit the bed. This is Nintendo we’re talking about. Credit to that first Switch video, though. I fell for it, too! I wrongly assumed Nintendo was trying to demonstrate they’ve turned a new leaf (no pun intended, Animal Crossing fans). At the presentation, however, it seems Nintendo isn’t just making its same old mistakes but brand new ones.
But I think it’s important to remember that a poor showcase isn’t enough reason to condemn the hardware itself. The tech, despite Nintendo’s aloof messaging, still looks cool. So let’s try to unpack what we learned at the showcase (and the info we gleaned in the days following) without having to suffer through awkward squid doctors and a translator whose probably looking for a new job right about now:
Tumblr media
The Nintendo Switch launches March 3rd and costs $299.
Tumblr media
I had it in my mind that if NIntendo wanted to blow some toadstools, the price would have been $249. However, this gives them some wiggle room if they wanted to make a $50 cut closer toward the holidays (or if it performs, shall we say, shittily?). Still, $300 is in bounds of reason. Base model PlayStation 4’s and Xbox One’s start at that price. While enthusiasts understand, and could potentially be irked by, the fact that they’re paying the same price for a console that has less horsepower than its contemporaries, we should look to the casual consumer’s mentality instead.
The casual consumer is likely to see this new system from trusty Nintendo --a brand so storied that there was once a time in my childhood where my parents referred to any video game console I had as “a Nintendo” -- see the similar pricing, and lump the Switch’s capability in the same bracket. Any cheaper and a casual consumer may begin to think of the Switch as a handheld: a complementary device that can’t do what a home console does. The very perception Nintendo doesn’t want, evidenced by their reminding us that it is a home console every chance they get.
If you don’t think that’s a genuine concern, keep in mind that the mainstream audience who made the Wii a massive success didn’t  know the Wii U was a separate console. Sometimes, even retailers didn’t know what the hell it was.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a launch title. Mario isn’t.
Tumblr media
Nintendo ended its ten-mile-jog-through-glass of a presentation with one of the only franchises in this industry that hasn’t been poisoned by cynicism. And goodness gracious does it look breathtaking (sorry, another dollar for the pun jar). Nintendo is well aware that a new Zelda game can pry wallets open -- especially the rare Zelda game that releases at a system’s launch. Unfortunately, Breath of the Wild seems to be the only compelling reason to snag a Switch on Day One.
Super Mario Odyssey, a brand new adventure that sees the Italian reptile stomper leap between dimensions (including an analog for NYC called “New Donk City”... let that settle inside you for a moment), won’t hit the launch window. It’s tentatively set for Holiday 2017. I’m not trying to gloss over the power or draw of a new Zelda title but… that’s coming out on Wii U as well. If you wanted a surefire system seller that tickles the fancies of the mainstream and hardcore, young and old alike, then you sell it alongside a Mario title. So why not wait until your flagship game was ready?
One gander at the launch lineup only underlines this point: there’s only three other games releasing on day one besides Zelda. You have the gimmicky 1-2-Switch that relies on the motion sensors within your Joy-Con controllers to play party games (you can see shades of Nintendo’s belief that the Wii wasn’t a hugely successful fluke in this game); then there’s two third-party offerings from Ubisoft and Activision -- Just Dance 2017 and Skylanders Imaginators, respectively. That’s a paltry showing, even taking into account launches tend to be historically thin.
Beyond that, our confirmed launch window games are either ports of games that have been out for years already (like Skyrim, I Am Setsuna, and Lego City Undercover) or updates to existing Wii U games (like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 2… don’t let the 2 fool you, this sequel feels incremental rather than substantial). There’s some standouts, though. Super Bomberman R looks good, as does Arms which is said to be a surprisingly engaging fighter despite its stupid, stupid name and Nintendo’s obvious attempt to make it A Thing.
The accessories cost an arm and a leg and the other leg too.
Tumblr media
This one truly boggles the mind. It’s like Nintendo is trying to offset the money they lost on the Wii U by taxing the shit out of us. Here’s the breakdown:
-Left & Right Joy-Con Controllers: $49.99 for one/$79.99 for both. Okay, I get that there’s all sorts of fancy tech shoved into these little guys. They feature “HD Rumble” which offers impressive feedback, letting you feel like you’re rattling a real cup full of ice or fondling a cow. Then there’s the IR sensor capable of spatial detection so precise, it can detect your very hand gestures. Awesome. Except… will that make a difference when you’re playing a traditional single-player game like Breath of the Wild? Motion controls and playing virtual rock, paper, scissors are decidedly not why I’m excited about a console/handheld hybrid.
-Pro Controller: $69.99. Now you’re off your fucking rocker, Nintendo. The way in which traditionalists and hardcore gamers will undoubtedly favor to play is more expensive than a PS4 or Xbox One controller. Granted, they couldn’t resist tossing in that “HD Rumble” and amiibo functionality. I’m sure that drove up the cost. But goddamn. Imagine wanting to play Zelda with a Pro Controller at launch. You’re out $430 and you only own one game.
Tumblr media
-Joy-Con Charging Grip: $29.99. If you’re skipping out on the Pro Controller but still wish to play on your TV, you’ll have to snap off your Joy-Cons to go wireless. Ah, but the charge on those babies drains. Enter the Charging Grip, a peripheral that serves as its own controller while it juices up your Joy-Cons. Ostensibly the only other reasonably priced accessory besides the $14.99 set of Joy-Con Wheels.
-Nintendo Switch Dock Set: $89.99. And we’re back into the clutches of greedy insanity. Now, this bundle -- which includes the dock, AC adapter, and an HDMI cord -- is paired with every Switch out of the box. But, say, your toddler decides to feed your dock some peanut butter or subjects it to a water level in your bathtub, this is one pricey replacement. It looks like a hunk of plastic (and very well could be) but the fact games run at a higher resolution when the Switch is docked could point to more intricate internal components. Still, a $90 price gouge dashes most gamers’ dreams of buying a dock for every TV in the house for convenience's sake (don’t act like you didn’t think about it; deep down, we’re all that lazy).
There’s going to be a paid subscription service for online play, and it already sounds bad.
Tumblr media
It’s astounding Nintendo hasn’t figured out an online ecosystem. Nintendo struggles with requisite features companies like Microsoft figured out fourteen years ago. I don’t even mind that they’re charging for the service. Feels like an inevitability in the console space -- though I will argue they have a serious uphill battle ahead to prove the service is worth the coin. What bothers me is that there has been no information on the continuity of service when it comes to transferring Virtual Console games over from the Wii U. There’s also been no word if we’ll finally see a system-wide Achievement feature -- another failing of the Wii U that fans have been pleading to see.
What we do know is that the online service will be free to Nintendo Account holders until the Fall -- when the feature is launched in proper.  They’re also offering a free NES or SNES download every month. That’s cute, and they’re incorporating online play to these retro titles, too, but the sour little caveat is that these games are free and playable only for the month you get them. Nintendo, buddy, you’ve already allowed yourself to get meat-checked by the competition, and your system isn’t out yet.
It gets better. They’re attempting to launch a “dedicated smart device app” that “will connect to Nintendo Switch and let you invite friends to play online, set play appointments, and chat with friends during online matches in compatible games -- all from your smart device.”
Are you seriously telling me the console that you’re launching in 2017 doesn’t have native voice chat? That I have to use an external device to play with friends? Nintendo’s been vague when it comes to online-play. Hell, Nintendo’s vague in general, so I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt until they clarify the matter… Otherwise, I’d have to call them out for being hopelessly fucking antiquated and warn them that their clownish decision making is a self-paved death march out of the hardware business.
Tumblr media
Listen, I want to eat crow. I hope Nintendo makes me choke on my own words. I hope, as I always do when they release new gadgets, that Nintendo succeeds. The company is how I first broke into gaming, and those early days with the Super Nintendo are some of my fondest. Of course I want to see Nintendo score another win. In a year’s time, I want to feel like the Switch is an integral, oft used part of my gaming life. The device is interesting and the most appealing piece of machinery Nintendo has shown us in years. But a system is only as good as its games, and this March, there’s only really one title I can hang my hat on. I sincerely hope that changes and that 2017 isn’t as dry as looks right now.
Something stinks about this launch lineup. It stinks of Sega Saturn. The Saturn launched before developers were ready for it, having very little in the way of games prepared for the new console, and Sega suffered the consequences. Again, I’m behind the concept of the Switch 100%. But, from this outlook, it makes little sense for Nintendo to launch in two months. It doesn’t feel ready.
Sure, Nintendo has survived abysmal launches before. The 3DS launched with a nigh empty catalog and that little bastard has been kicking for five years now (managing to smother the Vita along the way). But for as much pull as our favorite Hyrulian has, Mario’s your bigger draw. And what happened to that Pokemon game supposedly in development for the Switch? If Nintendo waited until the Fall and launched with the holy triumvirate of Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and a new Pokemon, the Switch would sell like gangbusters.
Even the company’s shareholders are having a tough time believing the Switch can reach a wide audience. Just a day after the big conference, Nintendo’s stocks dropped 5.75 percent. It feels just as dismal on the game dev side. The Game Developers Conference released the results of a poll where 50 percent of developers think the Switch can outsell the Wii U. I know, predictions don’t necessarily dictate reality. No, what has me distressed is that, of those who were polled, only 3 percent were actively working on a Switch game.
I’m… trying to remain optimistic. Consoles can make turnarounds. The PS3 famously pulled away from the faulty, downright arrogant decision making that plagued its early years and fought to close the gap Microsoft had forged with the Xbox 360. It’s just that I’d hate to have to wait four years for the Switch to really find its step -- in the same amount of time, the Wii U expended its entire life cycle.
