"Automattic Inc. and its founder have been sued by a WordPress hosting company that alleges an extortion scheme to extract payments for use of the trademark for the open source WordPress software. Hosting firm WP Engine sued Automattic and founder Matt Mullenweg in a complaint filed yesterday in US District Court for the Northern District of California.
"This is a case about abuse of power, extortion, and greed," the lawsuit said. "The misconduct at issue here is all the more shocking because it occurred in an unexpected place—the WordPress open source software community built on promises of the freedom to build, run, change, and redistribute without barriers or constraints, for all."
The lawsuit alleged that "over the last two weeks, Defendants have been carrying out a scheme to ban WPE from the WordPress community unless it agreed to pay tens of millions of dollars to Automattic for a purported trademark license that WPE does not even need."
The complaint says that Mullenweg blocked WP Engine "from updating the WordPress plugins that it publishes through wordpress.org," and "withdrew login credentials for individual employees at WPE, preventing them from logging into their personal accounts to access other wordpress.org resources, including the community Slack channels which are used to coordinate contributions to WordPress Core, the Trac system which allows contributors to propose work to do on WordPress, and the SubVersion system that manages code contributions."
The lawsuit makes accusations, including libel, slander, and attempted extortion, and demands a jury trial. The lawsuit was filed along with an exhibit that shows Automattic's demand for payment. A September 23 letter to WP Engine from Automattic's legal team suggests "a mere 8% royalty" on WP Engine's roughly $400 million in annual revenue, or about $32 million."

Considering Perplexity’s bold ambition and the investment it’s taken from Jeff Bezos’ family fund, Nvidia, and famed investor Balaji Srinivasan, among others, it’s surprisingly unclear what the AI search startup actually is.
Earlier this year, speaking to WIRED, Aravind Srinivas, Perplexity’s CEO, described his product—a chatbot that gives natural-language answers to prompts and can, the company says, access the internet in real time—as an “answer engine.” A few weeks later, shortly before a funding round valuing the company at a billion dollars was announced, he told Forbes, “It’s almost like Wikipedia and ChatGPT had a kid.” More recently, after Forbes accused Perplexity of plagiarizing its content, Srinivas told the AP it was a mere “aggregator of information.”
The Perplexity chatbot itself is more specific. Prompted to describe what Perplexity is, it provides text that reads, “Perplexity AI is an AI-powered search engine that combines features of traditional search engines and chatbots. It provides concise, real-time answers to user queries by pulling information from recent articles and indexing the web daily.”
A WIRED analysis and one carried out by developer Robb Knight suggest that Perplexity is able to achieve this partly through apparently ignoring a widely accepted web standard known as the Robots Exclusion Protocol to surreptitiously scrape areas of websites that operators do not want accessed by bots, despite claiming that it won’t. WIRED observed a machine tied to Perplexity—more specifically, one on an Amazon server and almost certainly operated by Perplexity—doing this on WIRED.com and across other Condé Nast publications.
The WIRED analysis also demonstrates that, despite claims that Perplexity’s tools provide “instant, reliable answers to any question with complete sources and citations included,” doing away with the need to “click on different links,” its chatbot, which is capable of accurately summarizing journalistic work with appropriate credit, is also prone to bullshitting, in the technical sense of the word.
WIRED provided the Perplexity chatbot with the headlines of dozens of articles published on our website this year, as well as prompts about the subjects of WIRED reporting. The results showed the chatbot at times closely paraphrasing WIRED stories, and at times summarizing stories inaccurately and with minimal attribution. In one case, the text it generated falsely claimed that WIRED had reported that a specific police officer in California had committed a crime. (The AP similarly identified an instance of the chatbot attributing fake quotes to real people.) Despite its apparent access to original WIRED reporting and its site hosting original WIRED art, though, none of the IP addresses publicly listed by the company left any identifiable trace in our server logs, raising the question of how exactly Perplexity’s system works.
Until earlier this week, Perplexity published in its documentation a link to a list of the IP addresses its crawlers use—an apparent effort to be transparent. However, in some cases, as both WIRED and Knight were able to demonstrate, it appears to be accessing and scraping websites from which coders have attempted to block its crawler, called Perplexity Bot, using at least one unpublicized IP address. The company has since removed references to its public IP pool from its documentation.

BALITANG ENTERTAINMENT: Hawaiian Indie Animation Director and Storyboard Artist 'Kiana Khansmith' discusses behind-the-scenes of "Pretty Pretty Please, I Don't Want to be a Magical Girl" [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]
Tumblr media
HONOLULU, HAWAII -- Japanese-American indie animation director and storyboard artist from the Hawaii state named 'Ms. Kiana Mai Khansmith' treated fans globally during a virtual home media conference last Sunday afternoon (March 9th, 2025 -- Hawaii local time). Known for her work with 'Disney Television Animation' in Glendale, California, United States of America; Kiana recently hosted a LIVE Q&A session on a video-sharing and broadcasting platform 'YouTube' (Google's parent company 'Alphabet'), in which she spoke about her premiere project, the animatic pilot "Pretty Pretty Please, I Don't Want to be a Magical Girl". The event attracted as many with a lot of excitement going on, looking to know more about her creative process and the future of the show.
A smoothie-like approach to "Pretty Pretty Please, I Don't Want to be a Magical Girl" brings something new to the genre. Aika reluctantly fulfills her role as a magical girl at the age of 15 in high school, while trying to maintain the normal responsibilities in real life. Helped by her magical sidekick 'Hoshi' (voiced by 'Christine Marie Cabanos'), and her new friend 'Zira', Aika battles the good fight of her dual life against the antagonist suspects 'Eclipse' and 'Lady DeVoid'. The animatic pilot has humor, heartwarming scenes, and a touch of subversive storytelling, which makes it a great project for indie animation.
Just this past Monday morning ago (Manila local time), her animatic pilot video gained an astonishing 2.5 million views with an estimated uploaded video revenue of U$D3,462 to U$D8,655 (or PHP198,670 to PHP496,676 Philippine pesos) based on global viewing shares survey from our research and analytics team of OneNETnews.
Kiana started her speech by expressing gratitude to everyone who welcomed the animatic pilot positively after its independent release debut. The animatic was originally a portfolio piece but turned into something more to discover from her. Online netizens received widespread appreciation from audiences because it introduced fresh ideas to this said genre.
The virtual home media conference featured Kiana's explanation of how she made 'Aika' and 'Zira' (voiced by the actress duos 'Anairis Quiñones' and 'Bennett Celine Abara') as fictional main characters. She described how she formed her main characters from personal experiences and demonstrated themes common in magical girl shows. She also addressed, in this said conference, how hard it is to find the perfect voice actors that fit the entirety of the series, and how teamwork is necessary to bring her vision to life. Offensive swearing occurs briefly in this animatic pilot.
If requested to turn the animatic into a full-fledged web animated series, Kiana expressed that she would consider the possibility. She mentioned issues of raising funds and corporate licensing but envisioned the possibility of the show and was hopeful. The fans speculated that the series would be picked up by a web-streaming site like YouTube, and by our internet television station 'OneNETtv Channel' (which soon-to-be the first public broadcaster) in Dumaguete City, or on independent crowdfunding like 'Kickstarter' or 'Throne', where it would be able to reach more people without the constraints of children's traditional TV.
Entertainment insiders suggest that the animation process from an animatic pilot to a full indie cartoon series will soon become a reality. Kiana talked about storyboarding and gave advice to up-and-coming creators to chase their dreams and make original content without using any artificial intelligence for the laziest individuals.
In the end, her craft of animation-inspired indie creators adds up from your heart of storytelling and dedication for several generations. Kiana's future, pursuing for excellence looks bright in our eyebrows which deserves for this indie animation gem. The whole animatic pilot is now available to watch for free on YouTube!

Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! ☕️
Tumblr media
My struggles continue with sciatica. Thankfully it is much better than it was a week ago but I have a ways to go. Physical therapy is just under a week away and I’m hoping they can help me get this darn impingement un-impinged. I’m getting three to four hours of decent sleep a night then I get restless.
It’s gonna get better. I know it.
I had a really great time at work at the end of the week. I was called on to help some of the iOS Devs on our team to fix a few bugs. It was a blast pairing, what a great way to end the week.

Looking for a weekend escape? The first two episodes of Long Way Home, the latest installment in Apple TV+’s best travel series, have just dropped — and it’s the perfect watch if you’re craving a scenic adventure.
The Long Way series on Apple TV have been so much fun to watch. Highly recommended. 👍🏼

Their gelatinous bases can range in color from vibrant blue to deep purple, and they have transparent triangular “sail” on top. It’s what allows them to be blown across the surface of the open sea where they typically live — and with strong enough winds, onto coastal sands.
I lived in California for over 50 years and I’ve never heard of these. They’re beautiful. ⛵️

Many horses, including Spotify and Amazon’s Kindle Store, have already left the barn. But Apple is moving quickly to shut the external payments door opened by last week’s ruling that the company willfully failed to comply with court orders regarding anticompetitive behavior.
I didn’t think it would take long for big companies to flip that switch.
Now we wait and see if Apple can get the courts to overrule the judgement. I can’t see that happening but I’m not a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV. 💸

Within hours after the news broke, our team shipped a Web Paywall Button. A new component you can drop into any RevenueCat paywall to whisk users over to a RevenueCat-hosted web checkout, complete the purchase, and then unlock access in-app as if it were a native buy flow.
That sure didn’t take long.
It makes me wonder if anyone is going to use Apple Pay for their payment system? 😃
Heck, if Apple switched their payment system to charge something like 5% I’m sure folks would use it.
I’d put money on that happening if the ruling remains in effect.

How Drupal Ensures Compliance and Data Security in 2025
In today's age of the internet, where data breaches and compliance issues are making headlines daily, organizations require a content management system (CMS) that, in addition to being robust and scalable, is secure and compliant too. Drupal, the most trusted open-source CMS platform globally, has raised the bar at every turn. In 2025, Drupal raises the bar again with improved data protection and adherence to international standards.
This is why more and more, businesses are partnering with a good Drupal development firm or hiring best Drupal development services to create, host, and protect their websites.
Here we talk about how Drupal has been made compliant and secure for the data in 2025 by highlighting the most important features, improvements, and best practices of the platform making it one of the highly chosen platforms for government organizations, banks and financial institutions, healthcare providers, and companies handling sensitive data.
Tumblr media
1. Security Architecture at its Core
Fundamentally, Drupal is designed to be secure. The system runs on a strong security-first architecture that includes:
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC): Drupal supports fine-grained user access rights down to where users are only able to view content and operate functions.
Database Abstraction: Prevents SQL injection by running on the basis of a layer of abstraction to sanitize input. It.
CSRF and XSS Protection: Drupal comes with built-in protection against Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) and Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), two common web application vulnerabilities.
Secure Coding Standards: Drupal has strict coding standards and peer-reviewed contributions, so it is less likely that insecure code will be released.
When you are outsourcing the service of a Drupal web development agency, such foundational security features are a part of the package as the company forms its work upon the basis of a secure and compliant digital experience.
2. Security Team and Continuous Updates
Drupal's dedicated Security Team monitors and resolves vulnerabilities 24/7. In 2025, the community has further strengthened with faster response times and proactive measures that patch vulnerabilities well before they can be exploited.
Secondly, Drupal 10.x (and subsequent versions in 2025) is updated periodically, and security advisories are released openly. This alerts developers and site administrators to it and gives them a chance to move quickly. Top-class Drupal development service ensures that client sites are kept current and secure with zero downtime.
3. Compliance-Ready Architecture
The flexibility of Drupal makes it possible to use it with almost any compliance framework. In 2025, organizations leverage Drupal to become compliant with some of the globe's most significant international standards:
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act)
CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act)
SOC 2
ISO/IEC 27001
How Drupal Ensures Compliance
Data Anonymization & Export: With GDPR fully in effect, Drupal makes anonymizing, deleting, or exporting personal data on demand for users easy.
Audit Logs: Track user actions and system changes for traceability and accountability.
Data Encryption: Drupal supports database encryption at rest and SSL/TLS for encrypted data in transit, which is industry best practice.
Most organizations outsource the installation of such compliance aspects to a professional Drupal development company that they entrust to abide by their industry-specific requirements.
4. Modular Security Improvements
The largest strength of Drupal is its modularity. Scores of contributed modules in 2025 are very commonly used to secure and comply sites. A few of them are:
Secure Login Module: Enforces 2FA (two-factor authentication) and CAPTCHA-based protection.
Password Policy Module: Enforces strict password policies and expiry dates.
Encrypt Module: Enables encryption of sensitive fields or entire database tables.
Security Kit Module: Offers a customizable security hardening solution for headers and content protection.
These modules are typically packaged by top Drupal web development companies to create customized solutions based on the specific security needs of each client.
5. Privacy by Design
Drupal encourages Privacy by Design, a philosophy that has become the norm of data protection policies in 2025. Whether creating a personal blog or an eCommerce site globally, developers can include privacy principles from the start: Minimal Data Collection: Form and API developers can configure forms and APIs to capture minimal user information.
Explicit Consent Mechanisms: Easy integration opt-in checkboxes, cookie banners, and preference centers ensure user consent.
Customizable Data Retention Policies: Automatically delete or archive the data after a while.
These features can be implemented by businesses easily without compromising quality user experience with the help of an experienced Drupal development company.
6. Third-Party Integrations with Security Controls
In today's tech stack, third-party system integration with CRMs, ERPs, and marketing systems is inevitable. Drupal's API-first nature makes interactions with such services secure:
Firewall and Access Control Layers: Secures so that APIs are accessed from trusted places only.
Rate Limiting and Throttling: Protects from brute-force attacks and abuse of public endpoints.
Professional Drupal web development companies integrate these features in a way that is both user-friendly and compliant.
7. Alignment of Cloud and DevOps Security
The native integration of the newest DevOps trends and cloud platforms within Drupal in 2025 provides additional security:
CI/CD Pipelines: Static security checking and code scan features like SonarQube and Snyk are applied in Drupal CI/CD pipelines.
Containerization with Docker/Kubernetes: Docker/Kubernetes with secure container deployment isolates apps and reduces the attack surface.
Drupal on Acquia, Pantheon, and Platform.sh: These solutions feature enterprise-grade security features such as WAF (Web Application Firewalls), DDoS protection, and compliance certification.
Through collaboration with a Drupal development company, businesses can host secure and scalable cloud applications and remain regulatory compliant.
8. Accessibility and Inclusivity in Security
Security and compliance are not just technical issues; they're also ethical responsibilities. Drupal, with its inclusiveness-oriented nature, ensures that:
WCAG 2.2 Compliance: Drupal websites are disability accessible to users, as per ADA and Section 508 compliance.
Multilingual Privacy Policies: Drupal has multilingual support that ensures the provision of privacy and security alerts to all users.
Top Drupal development services encompass accessibility testing and best practices in all levels of development.
9. Drupal Community and Documentation
Lastly, Drupal's worldwide active community ensures a secure environment. Thousands of developers contribute to code reviews, security scans, and knowledge sharing. Documentation on Drupal.org, webinars, and security guides make deployment and maintenance of compliant systems easier than ever.
In 2025, functionalities like Project Browser and Automatic Updates further make the platform secure by simplifying module discovery and patch application, respectively.
A quality Drupal web development company will always be at the forefront of these advancements to create the optimal result.
Conclusion
With changing data privacy regulations and increasingly advanced cyber attacks, a secure, compliant CMS has never been more critical. Drupal's robust architecture, dedicated security team, upgradable modularity, and adherence to international compliance standards make it a leading-edge solution for 2025.
Businesses that are looking to future-proof their web assets are not only betting on Drupal development services to build a website, but to develop an enterprise-grade compliance and data security policy. Through partnership with an experienced Drupal development company, businesses can be assured that their websites are not only beautiful and functional but robust and regulation-friendly as well.

Big Picture Science Podcast: Making Hard Science "Easy"
Tumblr media
Podcasting has hundreds of thousands of podcasts, but, even with that large number, it still has weaknesses in certain genres, including minority, LGBTQ+, and women's issues.
However, podcasting is strong in science. Science Vs, Taboo Science, Unexplainable, and numerous other excellent science podcasts.
There's one especially successful science podcast that has more than 578 episodes under its production belt.
That's Big Picture Science. It's a terrific podcast that exposes junk science, highlights new scientific discoveries, and finds the science in everyday life.
Case in point: The May 6, 2024, episode titled, "Nuts & Bolts." Here's the episode show notes: "How frequently do you think about fasteners like screws and bolts? Probably not very often. But some of them a storied history, dating back to Egypt in the 3rd century BC. They aren’t just ancient history. They help hold up our bridges and homes today. Join us as we dissect a handful of engineering inventions that keep our world spinning and intact."
With guests Roma Agrawal, a structural engineer and author of "Nuts and Bolts: Seven Small Inventions That Changed the World (in a Big Way)," and Ron Gordon - watchmaker, New York City, the show made these inconsequential fasteners, well, fascinating.
Big Picture Science is produced at the SETI Institute’s radio studio in Mountain View, California. The program began with the title Are We Alone? In 2002 as a commercially-supported call-in show distributed to a handful of stations on Radio America by Bill Oxley and Seth Shostak, who actually broadcast from their respective living rooms in San Diego and Mountain View.
Tumblr media
In 2004, Molly Bentley joined AWA as an editor and executive producer. At that time, support from the NASA Astrobiology Institute allowed us to build our own radio studio and move away from single-interview call-ins to a thematic multi-interview-produced show.
After a short stint on the Discovery Channel’s outlet on Sirius Satellite Radio, SETI began distributing Are We Alone? On the Public Radio Satellite System (PRSS) and the Public Radio Exchange (PRX). The name of the program was changed from Are We Alone? to Big Picture Science in July 2011.
Big Picture Science is supported in part by Sami David, Rena Shulsky David, the William K. Bowes, Jr. Foundation, and the NASA Astrobiology Institute. Skeptic Check is presented thanks to a donation from the Trimberger Family Foundation.
The opening theme, "Kinematics" is composed arranged, programmed and produced by Jun Miyake and adds to the mystique of the show.
The show's co-hosts are Seth Shostak and Molly Bentley. Shostak and Bentley have been doing for years, so they are comfortable as hosts, interviewers, and with each other. The co-hosts can geek out on hard science and still laugh at science nerdiness, and they can get tough with junk science theories and claims. In essence, they make an enjoyable combo, like vanilla ice cream on apple pie.
Seth Shostak is the Senior Astronomer at the SETI Institute, in Mountain View, California. He has an undergraduate degree in physics from Princeton University, and a doctorate in astronomy from the California Institute of Technology. For much of his career, Shostak conducted radio astronomy research on galaxies, and has published approximately fifty papers in professional journals. He also founded and ran a company producing computer animation for TV.
Seth Shostak has written several hundred popular magazine and Web articles on various topics in astronomy, technology, film and television. He has edited and contributed to a half dozen books. His first popular tome, “Sharing the Universe: Perspectives on Extraterrestrial Life” appeared in 1998. He has also authored “Life in the Universe” (2006, 2nd edition, textbook, with Jeff Bennett) and “Cosmic Company” (2003, with Alex Barnett). His most recent book is “Confessions of an Alien Hunter” (2009).
Molly Bentley oversees the production of Big Picture Science. She has worked as a science journalist for the BBC, including World Service, Radio 4 and Science/Nature Online. She has also written for New Scientist. Furthermore, she teaches a course on radio writing and podcast production at the University of California, Santa Cruz Science Writing Program.
She’s been an invited participant to a number of workshops about helping scientists communicate more effectively with reporters, including the Aldo Leopold Leadership Program, Switzer Environmental Fellowship workshop, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography Science Communication Workshop, sponsored by the Metcalf Institute and funded in part by the National Science Foundation.
She attended M.I.T.’s Knight Science Journalism workshops in 2007 and 2010. Her radio career began when she wandered into Wisconsin Public Radio and landed a job answering the phones for the early-morning call-in show, then graduated on to less insane hours as assistant producer of the national radio magazine, To the Best of Our Knowledge.
So, of my favorite episodes features a show with the fabulous, witty, and often wacky science writer Mary Roach. In "Animals Being Jerks," the subtitle says it all -- "They’re cute and cuddly. But they can also be obnoxious."
Then, we listen, amazed and amused, when Roach spin bizarre tales about how our animal friends don’t always bow to their human overlords and behave the way we’d want. The resulting encounters, such as when gulls disrupt the Vatican’s Easter mass, make for amusing stories. But others, such as wolves threatening farmers’ livestock, can be tragic.
On the April 15, 2024, episode, "For The Birds" we hear about migratory birds that travel thousands of miles in a display of endurance that would make an Olympic athlete gasp. More importantly, we discover what can we do to save disappearing species? Plus, we learn how 19th century bird-lovers, appalled by feathered hats, started the modern conservation movement.
Finally, on the recent July 11, 2024, show -- "Aliens Now" -- the co-hosts talk to astrophysicist Adam Frank about the possibility of intelligent life on other planets. Don't worry. There are no discussion of anal probes, or aliens bursting out of your chest. Instead, Frank explains the Drake Equation and Fermi Paradox, which are the yin and yang of the "are there intelligent aliens" question. Frank explains that NASA is planning a telescope after the James Webb Telescope called the "Habitable Worlds Observatory," which focuses on finding other life in the universe.
Check out Big Picture Science. It is one of the best science podcasts out there. After all, as Fox Mulder of The X Files once intoned, "Scully, the truth is out there."

Study: Transparency is often lacking in datasets used to train large language models
New Post has been published on https://sunalei.org/news/study-transparency-is-often-lacking-in-datasets-used-to-train-large-language-models/
Study: Transparency is often lacking in datasets used to train large language models
Tumblr media
In order to train more powerful large language models, researchers use vast dataset collections that blend diverse data from thousands of web sources.
But as these datasets are combined and recombined into multiple collections, important information about their origins and restrictions on how they can be used are often lost or confounded in the shuffle.
Not only does this raise legal and ethical concerns, it can also damage a model’s performance. For instance, if a dataset is miscategorized, someone training a machine-learning model for a certain task may end up unwittingly using data that are not designed for that task.
In addition, data from unknown sources could contain biases that cause a model to make unfair predictions when deployed.
To improve data transparency, a team of multidisciplinary researchers from MIT and elsewhere launched a systematic audit of more than 1,800 text datasets on popular hosting sites. They found that more than 70 percent of these datasets omitted some licensing information, while about 50 percent had information that contained errors.
Building off these insights, they developed a user-friendly tool called the Data Provenance Explorer that automatically generates easy-to-read summaries of a dataset’s creators, sources, licenses, and allowable uses.
“These types of tools can help regulators and practitioners make informed decisions about AI deployment, and further the responsible development of AI,” says Alex “Sandy” Pentland, an MIT professor, leader of the Human Dynamics Group in the MIT Media Lab, and co-author of a new open-access paper about the project.
The Data Provenance Explorer could help AI practitioners build more effective models by enabling them to select training datasets that fit their model’s intended purpose. In the long run, this could improve the accuracy of AI models in real-world situations, such as those used to evaluate loan applications or respond to customer queries.
“One of the best ways to understand the capabilities and limitations of an AI model is understanding what data it was trained on. When you have misattribution and confusion about where data came from, you have a serious transparency issue,” says Robert Mahari, a graduate student in the MIT Human Dynamics Group, a JD candidate at Harvard Law School, and co-lead author on the paper.
Mahari and Pentland are joined on the paper by co-lead author Shayne Longpre, a graduate student in the Media Lab; Sara Hooker, who leads the research lab Cohere for AI; as well as others at MIT, the University of California at Irvine, the University of Lille in France, the University of Colorado at Boulder, Olin College, Carnegie Mellon University, Contextual AI, ML Commons, and Tidelift. The research is published today in Nature Machine Intelligence.
Focus on finetuning
Researchers often use a technique called fine-tuning to improve the capabilities of a large language model that will be deployed for a specific task, like question-answering. For finetuning, they carefully build curated datasets designed to boost a model’s performance for this one task.
The MIT researchers focused on these fine-tuning datasets, which are often developed by researchers, academic organizations, or companies and licensed for specific uses.
When crowdsourced platforms aggregate such datasets into larger collections for practitioners to use for fine-tuning, some of that original license information is often left behind.
“These licenses ought to matter, and they should be enforceable,” Mahari says.
For instance, if the licensing terms of a dataset are wrong or missing, someone could spend a great deal of money and time developing a model they might be forced to take down later because some training data contained private information.
“People can end up training models where they don’t even understand the capabilities, concerns, or risk of those models, which ultimately stem from the data,” Longpre adds.
To begin this study, the researchers formally defined data provenance as the combination of a dataset’s sourcing, creating, and licensing heritage, as well as its characteristics. From there, they developed a structured auditing procedure to trace the data provenance of more than 1,800 text dataset collections from popular online repositories.
After finding that more than 70 percent of these datasets contained “unspecified” licenses that omitted much information, the researchers worked backward to fill in the blanks. Through their efforts, they reduced the number of datasets with “unspecified” licenses to around 30 percent.
Their work also revealed that the correct licenses were often more restrictive than those assigned by the repositories.
In addition, they found that nearly all dataset creators were concentrated in the global north, which could limit a model’s capabilities if it is trained for deployment in a different region. For instance, a Turkish language dataset created predominantly by people in the U.S. and China might not contain any culturally significant aspects, Mahari explains.
“We almost delude ourselves into thinking the datasets are more diverse than they actually are,” he says.
Interestingly, the researchers also saw a dramatic spike in restrictions placed on datasets created in 2023 and 2024, which might be driven by concerns from academics that their datasets could be used for unintended commercial purposes.
A user-friendly tool
To help others obtain this information without the need for a manual audit, the researchers built the Data Provenance Explorer. In addition to sorting and filtering datasets based on certain criteria, the tool allows users to download a data provenance card that provides a succinct, structured overview of dataset characteristics.
“We are hoping this is a step, not just to understand the landscape, but also help people going forward to make more informed choices about what data they are training on,” Mahari says.
In the future, the researchers want to expand their analysis to investigate data provenance for multimodal data, including video and speech. They also want to study how terms of service on websites that serve as data sources are echoed in datasets.
As they expand their research, they are also reaching out to regulators to discuss their findings and the unique copyright implications of fine-tuning data.
“We need data provenance and transparency from the outset, when people are creating and releasing these datasets, to make it easier for others to derive these insights,” Longpre says.
“Many proposed policy interventions assume that we can correctly assign and identify licenses associated with data, and this work first shows that this is not the case, and then significantly improves the provenance information available,” says Stella Biderman, executive director of EleutherAI, who was not involved with this work. “In addition, section 3 contains relevant legal discussion. This is very valuable to machine learning practitioners outside companies large enough to have dedicated legal teams. Many people who want to build AI systems for public good are currently quietly struggling to figure out how to handle data licensing, because the internet is not designed in a way that makes data provenance easy to figure out.”

Update on Op:Monoxide
The following information will go up on my site soon, but I felt that it was worth having here, as several discoveries have recently been made.
The Canary Mission website is likely currently hosted on a server owned by fixweb, a French hosting provider. IP geolocation (in general) is not accurate enough to get an exact location of the server, but it is accurate enough to tell me that the server is somewhere in Paris, France, and uses Scaleway SAS as an ISP.
On and related to the fixweb network are several domains and IP addresses that are connected in some way to the Canary Mission:
1. beta.canarymission.org
The URL beta.canarymission.org resolves to an IP in the fixweb range. Furthermore, that IP redirects to the main site (using HTTP code 302) when accessed through a browser via port 80 (HTTP), but not when accessed by port 443 (HTTPS). This indicates that port 443 is likely being used to communicate with either the CloudFlare reverse HTTP proxy (possibly in California) or the web application firewall (in the NY/NJ area). It also tells me that the server is configured to refuse connections on port 443 that don’t come from certain servers (whether that’s the WAF or the Reverse proxy is still unknown).
While investigating this a few months ago, the IP didn’t redirect to the main site as far as I knew. But it still resolved to the beta domain. The redirect occurred only after a major change had been made to their site layout, indicating that the development version of the site is hosted on the machine corresponding to the IP. This is significant, because most people try to keep their code in one place, so it’s likely the production version of the site is in the fixweb network too, but is only accessible through the reverse proxy and/or the WAF.
2. media90.canarymission.org
media90.canarymission.org resolves to an IP owned by fixweb, indicating that their CDN (content delivery network) exists on their servers but is not behind the proxy. This further confirms my suspicions that the Canary Mission switched their host from Israel (likely under Kamatera’s hosting services) to France, so they could abuse the GDPR to redact the contact information of the site maintainers.
3. canary.fixweb.net
The domain canary.fixweb.net exists. Not much to say about this one, I think the conclusions write themselves.
4. thingdust.io
This isn’t directly related to the fixweb domain (as far as I’m aware), but I found three other domains through an automated OSINT search:
canarymission.cust.dev.thingdust.io
canarymission.cust.disrec.thingdust.io
canarymission.reservd.disrec.thingdust.io
Noticing a pattern in these URLs, I also attempted to access canarymission.cust.prod.thingdust.io: the host was up (I think), but it wasn’t configured to serve any resources.
Upon researching thingdust, I found that they’re a company in Switzerland that specializes in IoT-enabled workplace monitoring. This is one of those companies that makes those sensors that some people would find under their desks that track workplace occupancy. If the resources on those servers were publicly accessible, we could use the sensor network’s web view to obtain the floor plan of the building the Canary Mission team operates from.
More to come as secrets reveal themselves.

Effective Strategies to Boost Your Website's Loading Speed
In today's digital world, a strong online presence is essential for business success. An optimized website is at the heart of this presence, ensuring that visitors have a smooth and enjoyable experience. One of the key factors that contribute to this is the loading speed of your website. A slow website can deter visitors and affect your search engine rankings. Therefore, it's essential to employ effective strategies to optimize your website's loading speed.
SMV Experts, a leading provider of Web Development, Mobile Development, Digital Marketing, Online Reputation Management, SEO, and Web Hosting services, understands the importance of a fast-loading website. Evaluate Current Speed
Before diving into optimization techniques, it's essential to evaluate your website's current loading speed. This can be done using various speed testing tools. Here's how:
Use Speed Testing Tools: Tools like Google PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix, and Pingdom provide comprehensive reports on your website's performance.
Identify Key Performance Metrics: Look at metrics like load time, time to first byte (TTFB), and page size to understand where improvements are needed.
Optimize Images
Images often make up a large part of a web page's size. Optimizing them can greatly enhance loading speed.
Compress Images: Use tools like TinyPNG or ImageOptim to reduce image file sizes without losing quality.
Use Appropriate Formats: Modern formats like WebP provide better compression than older formats like JPEG or PNG.
Implement Lazy Loading: This technique loads images only when they are about to appear in the viewport, reducing the initial load time.
Minimize HTTP Requests
Each element on a webpage, such as images, scripts, and stylesheets, requires an HTTP request to load. Reducing these requests can enhance loading speed.
Combine Files: Merge your CSS and JavaScript files to decrease the number of requests.
Use CSS Sprites: Combine multiple images into a single file and use CSS to display the required parts.
Reduce Plugins: Limit the use of plugins to those essential for your website's functionality.
Enable Browser Caching
Browser caching stores parts of your website on a user's device, speeding up future visits.
Leverage Browser Caching: Set expiration dates for static resources so that the browser can cache them.
Use Cache-Control Headers: Specify how long browsers should cache particular resources.
Improve Server Response Time
Your server's performance directly affects your website's loading speed.
Choose a Reliable Hosting Provider: Opt for a provider known for good performance and uptime.
Use a Content Delivery Network (CDN): Distribute your content across multiple servers globally, reducing latency.
Optimize Database Queries: Ensure your database queries are efficient and do not slow down your server.
Minify CSS, JavaScript, and HTML
Minifying involves removing unnecessary characters from your code to reduce file size.
Remove Unnecessary Characters: Get rid of spaces, comments, and line breaks.
Use Minification Tools: Tools like UglifyJS for JavaScript, CSSNano for CSS, and HTMLMinifier for HTML can help automate this process.
Reduce Redirects
Redirects add extra HTTP requests, slowing down your website.
Minimize Use of Redirects: Only use redirects when necessary.
Ensure Efficient Redirect Chains: If you must use redirects, ensure the chain is as short as possible.
Optimize Web Fonts
Web fonts can enhance your site's aesthetics but can also slow it down.
Limit Font Families and Weights: Use only the necessary fonts and weights.
Use Modern Font Formats: Formats like WOFF2 are optimized for performance.
Monitor and Maintain Performance
Optimization is an ongoing process. Regularly monitor your website's performance to ensure it remains fast and efficient.
Regular Speed Tests: Periodically test your website's speed using the tools mentioned earlier.
Stay Updated: Keep up with the latest best practices and technological advancements.
Conclusion
Optimizing your website's loading speed is essential for providing a good user experience and improving your search engine rankings. By following these strategies, you can significantly enhance your website's performance. As one of the best SEO agency in California, SMV Experts can help you implement these strategies effectively.
