The speaker is suggesting that this dream is already delayed and frustrated and that time is of the essence—this dream has to be fulfilled or else. Hot Time in the Old Town (Edward P. Kohn) "One of the worst natural disasters in American history, the 1896 New York heat wave killed almost 1,500 people in ten oppressively hot days. The heat coincided with a pitched presidential contest between William McKinley and the upstart Democrat William Jennings Bryan, who arrived in New York City at the height of the catastrophe. As historian Edward P. Kohn shows, Bryan's hopes for the presidency began to flag amidst the abhorrent heat just as a bright young police commissioner named Theodore Roosevelt was scrambling to mitigate the dangerously high temperatures by hosing down streets and handing out ice to the poor. A vivid narrative that captures the birth of the progressive era, Hot Time in the Old Town revives the forgotten disaster that almost destroyed a great American city."

In addition to the heat wave itself, elements of the Desolation contained in this account include the terrible, inhumane conditions of the New York City tenements and the abrupt decline of Bryant's presidential chances and political future.

INHERIT THE WIND

I recently saw the play with music, Inherit The Wind, at the Asolo/ U of South Fl theatre.  It was fantastic. I want to share why I think  it is still relevant. First some background. It is a play written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee that opened on Broadway in 1955.It was based on the Scopes monkey trial in Tennessee in 1925. Tenn. had passed a law preventing the teaching of evolution to high school students. The ACLU wanted to challenge the law in court and arranged for a teacher to confess to teaching evolution.  The trial lawyers were 2 of the most famous attorneys in the nation. William Jennings Bryant, who ran for and lost the Presidency three times and Clarence Darrow. Lawrence and Lee had something more in mind than Biblical creation versus Darwin’s theories of evolution. They were responding to the McCarthy attacks on artists because of their alleged communists’ views. The play attacks the idea of disavowing critical thinking. The authors wanted us to question why children or anyone could not be exposed to many, diverse ideas and then use their own minds and power to think to determine the truth for them. They also wanted us to consider that rural America with its’ rigid views was passing away with the increase of urban living. They expressed that more open views were a healthier way of life.  The play has caught the imagination of so many as it has been made into motion pictures four times and the starring roles have been played by every important actor of the 20th century.

Now, in 2023, it is being staged in Florida. In my opinion, its’ relevance is even more important, especially in FL. Laws passed in Florida prevent the teaching of sexual and other topics to students in state schools. An even more restrictive law is being considered that would limit social media to people over the age of 18. Like the people in Tenn. in 1925, the legislature in Florida does not believe students can think for themselves. They want to prevent them from receiving information about various topics, including LBGTQA related topics in a school. And they also want to keep them from using social media. The censorship is scary. The magnificent play Inherit the Wind shows the stark contrast between forcing people to accept what some group wants them to accept versus allowing children and all people to hear and read various points of view and using critical thinking to come to their own decisions. I applaud Asolo Rep for their production and doing it at a time when Floridians need a reminder of what a fascist state really looks like.

  The other day Norma Jean and I discovered a quaint little breakfast spot on North Redington Beach, The Sweet Sage Café. It’s a combination café, gift shop, and boutique with a beautiful outdoor garden.

After a delicious breakfast, we began browsing through the gift shop reading some of the clever plaques. Many were inspirational. Others were funny. And a few slightly risqué. However, this one…

Why it's Desolation: Living fire that kills people to turn them into fire zombies! Illusions of their dead loved ones to lure them into the fire's embrace! PAIN!

The Emmy’s were a little different this year with more of a Golden Globe look.  Cedric the Entertainer hosted with Reggie Watts as DJ. Lots of minority noms but barely a win. It was a white people night. Ted Lasso had a great night. Mare of Eastown took home a few with Evan Peters, Julianne Nicholson and Kate Winslet. Now, Kate is great but how did Anya Taylor- Joy not walk away with that? Queens Gambit did win a couple and gave the longest speech with the seemingly arrogant director Scott Frank who opened up 2 page acceptance. Categories were tough but I was routing for Renee Elise Goldberry and Bowen Yang but perhaps next year. The people in England who had their own party for all the statues that the Crown won seemed to be having more fun! Hacks won for writing and directing and Jean Smart!! It was nice to see the Norm Macdonald love which was barely mentioned by Lorne but celebrated by John Oliver. Colbert ‘s election night special won as did JB Smoove. Hamilton won and Debbie Allen got the big one. I do not understand why real singers and or musicians have to be there for the in Memoriam. It takes me out of it a bit and concentrates the focus on them. Do they think that people will pay attention more? Do companies know how fucked up their employment websites are? It is true that some people do not want to work. It is true that people schedule interviews and don’t show up. It is also true that companies have made it so hard to apply that many can’t. I suppose it is easier for them but the poor who may really want to work have a hard time. Paper applications are almost completely gone. The old fashioned way of walking into low paying job sites and finding a connection with a manager rarely exist. Some places only accept texts or have long ridiculous psych tests that a working Mother may not have time for. A Father working many hours already, may not be able to go to the library to get online if they cannot afford a computer. Many websites tell you that there no positions available in your area while there is a huge sign in front of the establishment. Can’t find people to work.. Gee I wonder why?? And treat people with respect once you find them, how about that?

Hey.. There was a van air B’n B biz going that got busted. Hey.. The poor need vaca’s too. It is wrong but If they are willing to sleep in a van, why not. I truly think that many do not understand how much people are struggling.

Free coffee day came and went but only a few places really gave you free coffee without rules to govern the promo. Some places wanted to sell you something else and some made you belong to their club. Starbucks held that customers had to come inside for the free cup of Joe, handicapped or not.

One would think the Republicans would run out of $ for recounts but they have deep pockets. Just think how much good they could do for the huddled masses with that scratch.

Sad to lose Mick Brigden, protégé of Bill Graham who managed The Stones and worked with Frampton, Dylan and Santana.** And the comics were very vocal about the loss of Norm Macdonald. He was one of a kind and he will be missed!

The Wizard of Oz: An Allegory

The story of The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum tells of a magical land with talking animals, animated manakins, witches, and wizards. The story was developed into a book series of at least 13 novels as well as a variety of shows, movies, and plays. The play that came out only a year after the book in 1901 had many direct political messages as well as mentions of famous American figures of the time, which made people consider that the whole story was a political/economic allegory for the US in the 1890s. Here are connections that were mentioned by Baum and some that were more conspiracy theory:

Dorothy Gail - Struggling America

The main character of the books is supposed to represent the average naïve American who only discovers the world of politics after a disaster. She dreams of something bigger but she really doesn’t know what is out there. It is indicated in the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” that she has simple wishes and is only interested in local problems. A sudden crash after literal winds of change makes her see things in a new way. The blue and white dress with the red shoes in the film made her really look the part of America.

The Tornado - Economic Difficulty

After the Civil War and with continued unrest during the reformation in the late 1800s, a lot of people thought that America had lost its way. It had been turned around and needed help to return to the land of promise it once was.

The Yellow Brick Road - Gold Standard

For many people who moved to the United States at the end of 19th century, America was the promised land with streets paved of gold and anyone had the potential to become a millionaire. America was basing its economy on gold and silver at the time (Dorothy had silver shoes in the book opposed to the ruby slippers in the film.} 

The Scarecrow - American Farmers

The farmers seemed to be lost without a lot of the slave labor and were forced to try new things. They seemed lost and to stumble (and very sensitive to fires) which is why the Scarecrow was clumsy and had no brain. 

The Tin Man and the Oil Can - Big Steel and Oil

Maybe the most straight forward, the tin man was the steel industry that powered the railroad and was quite strong but was completely hampered by a lack of oil. At the time, two of the richest men to have ever lived, John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie, were the strongest powers to facilitate movement around the country (oil and steel, respectively), The tin man was the best fighter and kept Dorothy moving, but he had no heart like both of the famously ruthless billionaires.

The Cowardly Lion - William Jennings Bryant

Bryant was a popular orator and politician in the Democratic party. He ran for president and lost three times and was the youngest candidate to have every won an electoral vote at 35. He was quite the motivational speaker, but he was not the rugged Democrat of the times like Teddy Roosevelt, so he was sometimes accused of having “bark with no bite.” He wanted to get rid of the gold standard, which would explain why the yellow brick road is in disrepair in the section of the woods were the lion resides.

The Emerald City - Strong American Dollar

The United States still had green currency and America was trying to find its way to wealth by walking the gold standard. With the help of farmers, the railroad, and young politicians, perhaps L. Frank Baum thought we could get there.
