Harnessing Wind Energy | Juniper Green Energy
Harnessing Wind Energy : The India Imperative
In a global context dominated by concerns about climate change and a growing emphasis on sustainability, India is making significant strides toward a more environmentally friendly future. The nation has set an ambitious target of achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy by 2030, with a substantial portion, 140 GW, expected to come from wind power. This commitment positions India as a trailblazer on the global stage. The growth in India's wind power capacity has been remarkable, reaching around 43 GW in March 2023, a significant leap from a mere 1.2 GW in 2000. This accomplishment of harnessing wind energy, has propelled India to the fourth position globally in terms of installed wind capacity.
Presently, wind power constitutes about 10% of India's total installed capacity and a substantial 25% of its overall renewable capacity. India's aspirations are high, with approximately 11 GW of wind projects currently under construction. The government plans to award around 10 GW of wind projects annually, starting from the fiscal year 2024, to meet the ambitious target of 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. The overarching goal is to fulfil nearly 50% of the country's electricity needs through renewable energy sources by 2030, ultimately achieving a net-zero economy by 2070.
A key strategy driving India's wind energy expansion is the integration of wind and solar power. Many states with high wind potential also have abundant solar resources, such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat. This synergy allows for greater benefits, with wind-solar hybrid projects capable of achieving a capacity utilization factor (CUF) of up to 65%, compared to the 20%-40% CUF of standalone projects.
When considering the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), wind power emerges as the second most competitive renewable energy source, with costs ranging from INR 2.8 to 3.3 per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This is approximately 40% lower than the current landed grid tariff to consumers. Wind-solar hybrid projects fall within a similar price range, positioning themselves between standalone solar and wind sources. Wind-solar hybrid projects, when combined with battery storage, provide an appealing approach for ensuring continuous power supply. Although the cost of batteries remains a challenge currently, it is anticipated that by 2026, as battery prices decrease, these solutions will become more competitive, with LCOEs ranging from INR 3.8 to 4.2 per kWh.
Harnessing the wind energy industry is expected to receive a significant boost with the shift away from the reverse auction regime. The Ministry of Power's recent announcement replaces reverse auctions with a "Single Stage, Two Envelope, closed bid basis," providing the necessary impetus to the wind industry. However, despite the impressive expansion of India's wind capacity, domestic manufacturing capacity still lags. The government's plan to auction around 10 GW annually underscores the need to ramp up domestic manufacturing and enhance support systems such as logistics, digitization, analytics, and skilled manpower.
With demand for wind power coming from various sectors, including central, state, and commercial and industrial procurement, it is estimated that India will witness the commissioning of 70-80% of new wind capacity auctioned in the next five years. This demand is crucial for distribution companies (DISCOMs) that require a consistent power supply for efficient planning. To ensure grid stability, a mix of renewables and other sources, including energy storage systems (ESS), is required. Recent auctions for 1 GW of round-the-clock projects indicate pricing ranging from INR 3.99 to 4.27 per kWh, with the majority projects integrating renewable energy with thermal sources. As ESS costs decline, it is expected that more round-the-clock projects relying solely on renewable energy will further boost wind installations.
India's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2070 requires a comprehensive shift away from coal generation toward renewable energy, with wind playing a critical role. Initiatives aimed at repowering—which entail swapping out outdated parts for more modern turbines—will improve project economics and accelerate the expansion of wind installations in India. Additionally, the expected increase in Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) targets, reaching up to 30% by FY25 and 43% by FY30, will further bolster demand growth. Long-term prospects for India's wind industry remain strong as the country transitions to competitive, low-carbon technologies that promote sustainable growth and a cleaner, greener future.

okay first of all those maps are GORGEOUS. im so impressed they look so wonderful! any considerations/insights you have into putting together the territory maps? im chewing on the territories for my own rewrite and would love to hear your thought process
secondly, would you be willing to share whose kits the five are/how they ended up in all their different clans? (also i dont remember - does the ‘kin of your kin’ prophecy go only to firestar or to all of the leaders?)
Thank you!! My main considerations were a) what kind of relationships I wanted the different clans/shires to have and b) how could I make the territories more distinct.
For that first point, I wanted to make sure to keep the relationships between shires balanced. Shires that border one another without major barriers tend to have worse relationships than those who don't. For example, in the Forest, Shadow and Wind border one another and there are numerous examples of them fighting, both in the main series and in field guides. Same applies to River and Thunder, since the river isn't much of a barrier for River. On the other hand, the thunderpath serves as a good barrier between Shadow and Thunder and the gorge does the same for Wind and River. The clearer the boundary, the less aggression over borders. I kept that in mind throughout. What shires did I want to like one another, and which ones did I not? I wanted Wind and Shadow to have a shaky relationship in both territories, since they already have a lot of cultural things that are in conflict with one another (the core one being piety, but that's a whole other can of worms lol).
For my second goal, the main thing was making Sky not just Thunder that jumps better. I decided cats from a rocky environment that excelled in climbing rock faces, etc. would be a good fit for that. I applied the same logic to the lake territory. Shadow is now firmly a bog/marsh group, so I moved them around to the marshy part of the lake and then filled in what was left. I added more houses so Sky could keep Daylight Warriors, which was one of their most unique ranks in canon. My guiding star in all of this has been making the clans/shires unique with different outlooks on religion, differing cultures, differing territories, etc. while still maintaining the unified social structure. Where someone lives can have a huge impact on that. Thunder, Sky, and Shadow all being forest groups bugged me, so I made Sky and Shadow not forest anymore to give them their own thing.
As for the five -- I'll go cat by cat:
Goldenheart is Skyfall:Tigerheart. He is the son of Tawnypelt and Rowanclaw, just like in canon. Only this time, Rowanclaw is the son of Brokenstar. As a result, Goldenheart is the grandson of the two biggest antagonists from the first arc. His siblings are Dawnshine and Flametail, same as in canon again. I broke Jayfeather's power into two and Goldenheart gets the emotion-sensing part that Jayfeather had in canon. Goldenheart can sense the emotions of those around him. He is a hunter, and once Rowanclaw becomes thegn he also becomes the thegn's-heir of Shadoweye Shire.
Lionblaze is the son of Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw (for real this time). Juniperkit and Dandelionkit are now his littermates, and Sparkpelt and Alderheart will be from a future litter. He is Goldenheart's cousin via Brambleclaw and Jayfeather and Hollyleaf's cousin via Squirrelflight. He has the same power that he does in canon: invincibility in battle. He is a hunter of Thunderheart Shire.
Jayfeather is the son of Leafpool and Mothwing (who is a trans molly in Skyfall). He lives in Rivertail Shire with Mothwing and is a physician alongside her. Moth was his mother as well as mentor. Willowshine is now the priest's apprentice. Jayfeather can walk in the dreams of others. He starts out not knowing his true parentage. He is raised as a foundling kit.
Hollyleaf is the daughter of Leafpool and Crowfeather. She and Jay are from the same litter, they just have different sires. She lives in Windpaw Shire with her father, Crow, and was raised by Nightcloud as Breezepelt's sister. She believes she is Nightcloud's biological daughter, and does not know that Leafpool is her biological mom. Hollyleaf has the power of navigation. Her paws will always direct her in the direction she should be going, no matter how lost she is. This makes her phenomenal in the tunnels and as such she is a Windshire tunneler.
Dovewing is the daughter of Nettlesplash and Mintfur of Skyclaw Shire. Ivypool is still her sister, they're both just in Skyshire now. Dovewing is a hunter, aided by her super senses. Just like in canon, all of her senses are heightened and she can see, hear, and smell things that are much farther away than most cats. Her strongest sense is her hearing.
Okay, now the Power of Five prophecy. In the rewrite, all of the shire's preists receive the prophecy, not just Fireheart. In this situation, the kin requirement of the prophecy is not kinship to Fireheart, but instead kinship to Cloudstorm (Cloudstar) of Ancient Skyclaw Shire. Since Cloudstorm's kittens remained in the forest, and his siblings [to be named] went with him to the gorge, his kin could plausibly be in every shire. In order to better match the attitudes of the various shires when Sky is driven out, his kittens now go to the Shadoweyes rather than Thunderhearts. BUT Cloudstorm's son, Gorseclaw, has kits with a Thunderheart molly, resulting in Sky blood in Thundershire. Continue down the many generations and you end up with this: Tawnypelt and Brambleclaw (through Gorseclaw -> many generations -> Tigerclaw), Squirrelflight and Leafpool (through Gorseclaw -> many generations -> Sandstorm), Rowanclaw (through Orchidflame [Spottedpelt] -> many generations -> Brokentail), and Mintfur (through Cloudstorm's sister -> many generations -> Rainfur, her father). Continue this down to these cat's kittens and you get the five, all of whom are incredibly distantly related to Cloudstorm (like there is nearly a century of separation between them in the timeline). But the Stars don't care, that's good enough. The prophecy, There will be five, kin of the skies, who will unite all paws under the stars, is now about the five reuniting the Skyclaws with the other shires.
Hopefully that covers your questions! If you have any other questions, ask away! As you can probably tell, I've got a lot sitting around in my WIPs about Power of Five lol.
Thank you so much for the ask!

At the California Institute of the Arts, it all started with a videoconference between the registrar’s office and a nonprofit.
One of the nonprofit’s representatives had enabled an AI note-taking tool from Read AI. At the end of the meeting, it emailed a summary to all attendees, said Allan Chen, the institute’s chief technology officer. They could have a copy of the notes, if they wanted — they just needed to create their own account.
Next thing Chen knew, Read AI’s bot had popped up inabout a dozen of his meetings over a one-week span. It was in one-on-one check-ins. Project meetings. “Everything.”
The spread “was very aggressive,” recalled Chen, who also serves as vice president for institute technology. And it “took us by surprise.”
The scenariounderscores a growing challenge for colleges: Tech adoption and experimentation among students, faculty, and staff — especially as it pertains to AI — are outpacing institutions’ governance of these technologies and may even violate their data-privacy and security policies.
That has been the case with note-taking tools from companies including Read AI, Otter.ai, and Fireflies.ai.They can integrate with platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teamsto provide live transcriptions, meeting summaries, audio and video recordings, and other services.
Higher-ed interest in these products isn’t surprising. For those bogged down with virtual rendezvouses, a tool that can ingest long, winding conversations and spit outkey takeaways and action items is alluring. These services can also aid people with disabilities, including those who are deaf.
But the tools can quickly propagate unchecked across a university. They can auto-join any virtual meetings on a user’s calendar — even if that person is not in attendance. And that’s a concern, administrators say, if it means third-party productsthat an institution hasn’t reviewedmay be capturing and analyzing personal information, proprietary material, or confidential communications.
“What keeps me up at night is the ability for individual users to do things that are very powerful, but they don’t realize what they’re doing,” Chen said. “You may not realize you’re opening a can of worms.“
The Chronicle documented both individual and universitywide instances of this trend. At Tidewater Community College, in Virginia, Heather Brown, an instructional designer, unwittingly gave Otter.ai’s tool access to her calendar, and it joined a Faculty Senate meeting she didn’t end up attending. “One of our [associate vice presidents] reached out to inform me,” she wrote in a message. “I was mortified!”

The Big Offshore Wind Project in New York Is Back On. (Wall Street Journal)
Excerpt from this Wall Street Journal story:
Construction on the massive Empire Wind energy project off the coast of New York is set to resume after an abrupt about-face by the Trump administration.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum halted the project by Norwegian energy group Equinor EQNR 1.16%increase; green up pointing triangle a month ago and suggested in a social-media post that the Biden administration had rushed through its approval without sufficient analysis.
That decision sent a chill through the renewable energy industry because Empire Wind’s permits already were in place and construction had begun. Developers have been reassessing the risks around major energy and mining projects across the U.S. and questioning which other projects might end up on the chopping block.
Equinor had called the halt “unprecedented and in our view unlawful” but hadn’t taken legal action. The company said it was informed by the Interior Department that the stop-work order was lifted, allowing construction to continue. It credited lobbying by New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, New York City Mayor Eric Adams, and other politicians and labor groups for the reversal.
The Empire project is about 30% complete. Equinor said it had invested about $2.5 billion as of March and would “perform an updated assessment of the project economics” this quarter. It plans to start commercial operations in 2027.
“We appreciate the fact that construction can now resume on Empire Wind, a project which underscores our commitment to deliver energy while supporting local economies and creating jobs,” said Anders Opedal, chief executive of Equinor, in a statement.
During his campaign, Trump directed criticism at offshore wind projects, which he promised to “end on day one” of his administration. His first wave of executive orders included a pause for federal permits and leasing for wind projects on land and at sea.
“We aren’t going to do the wind thing,” Trump told his supporters Jan. 20, twirling a finger in a circle to indicate the rotation of a turbine blade. “Big ugly windmills, they ruin your neighborhood.”
Doreen Harris, chief executive of New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, said lifting the stop-work order on the Empire project will secure jobs for 1,500 construction workers and called the project “a cornerstone of New York’s energy transition.”
New York labor unions were among the many business groups expressing relief that the project would continue.

moss mfriday #3: Glacier Mice

That's right - it's glacier mice. One of my favorite things maybe on the entire planet. Let's talk about these freaky fuzzy little rats!!
Glacier mice are balls of moss that live in large herds like this in a few select glaciers. They are moss all the way through, with a center consisting of dead moss matter, implying that they begin as small growths of moss and simply accumulate over time, like snowballs. However, their outside surface is alive and well on all sides. Glacier mice have been observed, through tagging and tracking, to roll across the glacier like a majestic herd of wildebeest, exposing all of their sides to the sunlight. They trundle along at a pace of about 2.5 cm per day. That's 30 feet in a year! They're really schmovin'! Certainly further than most mosses can claim to travel.
What's really exciting, though, is that they all move in the same direction, and we're not sure why or how. Scientists experimented to try and attribute their coordinated behavior to wind, sunlight, and the direction that their grazing ground slopes, but to no avail. They speed up, slow down, and change direction in unison, based on some mysterious moss code that we haven't cracked yet.

Cross-section of a glacier mouse. Note the dead moss matter inside, and the short gametophytes on the outside, adapted to harsh winds and sunlight. [image credit]
We have figured out how they roll, though - while the moss ball sits on the ice, it insulates the ice directly underneath it, protecting it from melting. This forms a little pillar of ice that the moss eventually rolls off of. The insulating power of glacier mice also gives it the wonderful ability to host all kinds of microorganisms that otherwise wouldn't survive the glacier's harsh conditions, and their ability to move makes it possible for microorganisms to spread from one habitable spot to another. They're like a bunch of little tardigrade passenger ships, braving the dangerous glacier to go where no water bear has gone before!!
Glacier mice have been found to consist of several moss species, most of which must reproduce asexually in order to survive in the dry climate. They've been observed to live for at least six years, but are projected to live much, much longer. I love them. So much. I hope they know that I love them!! I LOVE THEM!!!!
