A blacksmith by Maciek Przeklasa (2021?):

propaganda: The badassery of the subject goes a long way. He looks so comfortable, like he just asked an old friend for a light. Also, consider this. Too much light or contrast would blur the heat gradient on the horseshoe and/or the details of the subject's face, but both are so clear. The sparks on the tip of the cigarette give you some dynamics, and the background is atmospheric but subtle. Just a really great portrait.

about the artist: he is on ig and fb, and he appears to be hire-able for weddings

propaganda: Some critics say he broke the glass negative on purpose to show his 'shattered self', others that it was an accident. Anyway, I love how unsettling this photography is. Makes me shiver.

Polish artist Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz (Witkacy) was truly ahead of his time

He drew Borg queen in 1928.

This actually a painting of a man, Michał Chorowański, but it reminds me of her.

Witkacy was known for using drugs and alcohol, and often created his artworks after indulging in some illegal substances. This applies to this portrait, too.

Like, it's her, change my mind. Now I'm wondering if somebody at the set of "First Contact" saw that painting or if it's just a coincidence.

In 1925 Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz a.k.a. Witkacy gave up oil painting and founded the S.I. Witkiewicz Portrait Firm, which became his primary source of income (‘For a 100 zlotys I’ll make a portrait of an entire figure. Destitution, creativity and life are coming to an end’). Clients had to respect the firm’s Regulations which included a rule saying that ‘misunderstandings are banned.’ In a dozen or so years he created thousands of portraits. Not everyone, however, could count on the privilege of being depicted. Some requests were rejected with a stern: ��I see no reason for that!’

the various letters and numbers abbreviations on the portraits was witkacy's way of tracking what drugs, intoxicants and/or medicine he was on at the time of drawing. he was supervised by a doctor, so, i guess, it's not that unhinged? pretty bonkers still. sherlock holmes if he were a polish painter XD

examples include: C for alcohol, Co for cocaine, Cof for caffeine, her for tea, Et for ether, F.ZZ. for smoking a pipe, Eu for eukodal (pain medicine), pyfko for beer, NП + [number of days] for how many days he went without alcohol...
