Steph was called to a meeting room within camp as the rest of us sat around the general room doing whatever. You were sat on beanbags in a circle with Caitlin, Mckenzie and Alannah as you switched between making tik toks and talking about whatever.

The sound of the door opening rather harshly forced your attention away from the girls and towards the door, where a tense a nervous looking Steph stood, eyes searching the room for something.

‘Baby? you okay?’ You asked as she finally made eye contact with you. A calmer, relieved feeling visibly washed over her at seeing you and she immediately walked towards you and sat herself in your lap.

‘Yeah. I’m okay’ she whispers to you.

In response you rub her back and lean up to kiss her head.

‘You sure? you looked pretty scared before’ you pushed.

‘I’ll tell you about it at home, not now please’ she whispered again.

‘Okay darling’ you whispered back.

After some more sitting around and talking with your team, Tony said everyone was free to head home or whatever so you and Steph hugged everyone goodbye and made your way home.

As soon as we walked in the door, Steph pulled you into a tight hug and laid her head in your neck.

‘Seriously baby, what’s going on?’ you asked worriedly.

‘I’m captain. Sam can’t play because of her injury. I’m really nervous, I don’t know if i’ll be a good captain. What if i let everyone down?’ she nearly cries.

‘Oh darling, don’t ever doubt yourself. You’ve proved over and over just how amazing you are on and off the pitch. You’ve done this before, you can do it again love. I’m so proud of you, you’re captain!’ you hugged her tighter and jumped up and down.

Steph just giggled at you, your words having soothed most of her worries and finally allowing her to be excited.

‘I’m captainnnn’ she said and jumps around in circles.

You laugh at her and pull her into your arms and fall back onto the couch.

‘I’m so proud of you darling’

‘Thanks puddin’, I love you’ she mumbled into your chest.

It’s the first group game of the Women’s World Cup for the Matildas. The score was 0-0 until Hayley had been taken out in the box. Penalty. This is their chance. You watched from the bench as Steph stepped up to take the shot. You prayed in your head that she had luck on her side. You knew she had the skill but any amount of things can go wrong in a football game.

You hear the whistle blow, see Steph run up to the ball. You watch almost in slow motion as the ball flies through to air and into the back of the net.

As soon as you register it’s gone in, you’re up and celebrating with the rest of the squad. You quickly turn around to the crowd and scream ‘That’s my girl!’ before turning back to your teammates. Next thing you know Steph is running at you full force. You hold your arms out for her and lift her up in the air as soon as you made contact.

‘You did it baby! You fucking scored!’ you yelled out overjoyed

Steph throw her head back and laughs at you as you put her down. Ignoring the rest of your team around you, you pull her into a quick kiss and tell her how proud you are of her.

‘You’re amazing Steph Catley. I’m so so proud of you love’

Steph, on the verge of tears from your words, pulls you into her again and whispers

‘Thank you baby, having you here has helped me so much. I love you puddin’ she says

‘I’m always going to be there to support you, you’re my girl. I love you so much Steph.’ you say as you hug her tighter.

You let her go and celebrate with the team and watch from a distance with a smile on your face.

They won, and Steph’s goal is the reason they won. As soon as the game and celebrations were over and you were back in the change rooms, you pulled Steph onto your lap and whispered

‘I knew you could do it. You did amazing baby. See? No reason to be nervous, you smashed it love’ before pulling her into a kiss.

‘We smashed it, I couldn’t have done it without you darling. Thank you for being my number one fan, my girl’ Steph said while holding your face in her hands.

‘Always and forever, love’ you smiled at her.

Good luck to the Spanish players trying to change the nt for the better, you’ll never succeed now because NO ONE is going to take you seriously ever again. You’re going to be the laughing stock of Spain and that’s your own fault.

How are you going to complain and then go BACK to that horrible human being, they are so spineless and there’s not a smidge of respect left for them. They’re going to have to live with being so incredibly fucking bad at keeping their word for the rest of their life.

They have not only failed themselves but also their friends who rejected the call up to change the NT, they’ve failed every little girl in Spain who look up to them and expect them to change the abusive ways of that cockroach.

They’re gonna have to keep on playing under him for the rest of their international careers and they’re going to continue to suffer abuse because they were so incredibly spineless. I hope that it gets better, but I know that it isn’t.

All I’m saying is, say goodbye to that change you wanted because it is never going to happen, the Spanish federation have seen what they can do with abusive coaches so they’re going to continue to appoint them, even after that gross man is gone.

My heart goes out to Clàudia Pina, Patri Guijarro and Mapi Leon who stood their ground for the change that’s never going to happen now and the fact that they’re most likely not going to play any international football for a long while. Extreme respect for them and all the others who stayed home despite being labelled as rebels.

The footballers diary

19/11/22 

 

Today was like any other match day. I woke up showered, got ready, waited to be picked up from my apartment. Training was normal, so was the bus ride. Everything leading up to that moment was normal. It was extra time. I was near the goal. The only thing I saw was Beth and Hannah Blundell both running towards the ball. Out of nowhere, Beth dropped her knee in her hands. Pain was written across her face. 

 

20/11/22

 

I woke up to the sound of my phone blowing up and picking it up. The first thing I saw was the first text Vivian sent. 

 

Viv: Beth wanted me to tell you all that they did some tests and she has ruptured her acl. 

 

2:23 am 

 

15/12/22

 

Its been exactly 27 days since Beth did her acl todays yet another home game. I didn't start the game a few seconds into extra time from where I was sitting. You couldn't see what happened. Lyon plays run into a group hug and the fans cheer. The match restarts. Viv gets the ball, passes it to lotte, who then passes it forward to Lia. Three Lyon players close on her and get the ball. Viv goes for it and tries to knock the ball a way from the Lyon player. She falls straight to the floor. Lia passes the ball to Katie. She must have seen. She passes the ball back to Frida. The ref blows her whistle.

It was like deja vu. Only this time it's a text from Beth. I opened my phone and clicked on the Arsenal group chat. 

 

Beffy: Viv asked me to text you all she doesn't know how to tell you all. so she asked me to text and tell you all that she tore her ACL last night.

Tomorrow is match day, and I'm scared. A lot of the girls are it’s like this team has some sort of bad luck in under 4 months. It's the World Cup, and everyone is scared that they will be next.

Match day nerves ran through the team we were playing in a 4-3-3 i have no clue what happened i had just been sent off less than 5 minutes before for a tackle on ella toone  it was a shit tackle i know but she was pissing me off i was in the changing room when i heard the sound of football boots 2 horse after it was confirmed leah had ruptured her acl im scared im going to be next

What the actual fuck? It has been 13 days since Leah did her ACL. I just got the text confirming that Laura has ruptured her ACL. What is happening?

I just got the call from Sarina Wigwam asking if I would like to go to the World Cup. Of course, I said yes.

We played Haiti, and we won 1-0. Georgia scored the goal. Apart from that, there's nothing much to say today.

We played Denmark today, and we won yet again. 1-0 lj was the one to score. In other news, I saw a kangaroo today. A few of us made some tiktoks and went for a walk.

We won 1-6. I'm tired, so there's not a lot to say.

Well, we lost, Spain won. I dont know what happened. All I can think about is the pop. I knew what it was the second I went down. I have had it described to me a thousand times. Now I am sitting here on the other side of the world in the same place. Four of my team members have been Why did it have to be me?
