Chapter 335: Homecoming (Pt. 1)

Jackson Flynn walked down the long hallway to his father’s library at Aldrich House, the family’s estate outside Winchester. He’d arrived back in Torenth earlier in the afternoon, but, finding no one at the airport to greet him, had been forced to take a taxi home.

He stopped to look up at an antique portrait of his ancestor, the second Baron Woodridge. The old man scowled back at him disapprovingly. But that was hardly surprising. As the youngest of three sons, Jackson was a spare for the spare. While his eldest brother, Jonathan, was heir to the Barony of Woodridge, and his other brother, Jarrod, had been created Viscount Norrell after the death of his maternal grandfather, Jack had no prospects other than those he could create for himself.

Jack was jarred from his thoughts by his mother’s voice.

“Jackson, you’re home!” she called from down the hall.

He turned to his mother and smiled as she rushed toward him. Of anyone else in the family, his mother was the one he loved best. She alone didn’t treat him as though he were any less important than his siblings.

“I just now arrived,” he replied, giving her a big hug. “It’s good to see you, mother.”

Eliza Flynn had married her husband young, before she’d realized the type of man he truly was. While never intentionally cruel, Price Flynn was, at best, emotionally distant from his family. So Eliza had thrown herself into the role of mother with gusto. Unfortunately, her two eldest boys had taken after their father, and remained distant from her doting attentions – leaving Jack, her youngest, to bask in his mother’s love with little competition.

“How was Weston?” she asked. “I hope you had a good trip.”

“I did,” Jack replied. “The contract is signed, and I should start receiving royalties as soon as the book is published.”

“Well done,” his mother said. “I’m so proud of you, son.”

“Really?” he asked, genuinely surprised. “I would have thought you would have preferred me to pursue a … well, a less risky career.”

“Oh no,” she said, reaching out to lay a hand on his shoulder. “The fact that you stuck to your guns and became a writer – even in the face of your father’s disapproval – demonstrates the passion you have for your vocation. That’s something I have never seen in either of your brothers.”

“Well, they both had their futures predetermined, whereas I did not,” Jack replied.

“Yes, I suppose that’s true,” his mother said. “But, truly, I don’t know that either of them would possess much passion even were that not the case.”

“So, you’ve returned,” his father’s voice said.

Jack turned to see his father standing, arms crossed, outside the door of his private library.

“He has, dear,” Eliza said. “He was just on his way to see you when I detained him.”

“Hmmm,” Price said, disapprovingly. “Then perhaps you should both come in.”

                    Okay the basics is that Woodridge Hollow was founded by four families. The Marshall’s, The Woodridges, The Bridges, and The Westfields. Now what is not known to the other families (Bridges / Marshalls) is that the Westfield’s and Woodridge’s stumbled upon an ancient evil that dwelled beneath the depths of their small settlement. The Evil as it’s referred too also goes by the name of Casimare (used formally by the Cult). When it was discovered it made a deal with these two families to grant them success and fortune if they fed it and kept its secrets. And then soon the Woodridge’s became the source of income for the settlement along with The Marshalls. But in order to keep their riches blood has to be spilled which launched a war between the two families The Marshall’s & Woodridge’s. The Westfields went on to develop a church while The Bridges invested in the Woodridge’s plans and business ideals; becoming partners.

                    Eventually the following for the church developed into a cult formation, led under the Westfield family and the Woodridge’ donations. This cult soon spread extending its reach into other towns and cities, IE: Looter’s Bay and Lilanvale. These other towns are lead by “pillars” in the church (cult), members who have proven their loyalty to Casimare and have ascended (in their minds at least). The expansion was brought on by Casimare demanding more flesh and sacrifices, and with each coming year to pass with more and more blood shed Casimare grew stronger. He developed abilities that the cult had no idea until events transpired leading them to realize he was “exalted”. 

                   Which leads me to explain what the current families living in Woodridge Hollow have to do with The Evil. 

                 1. The Marshall Brothers; Colton, Tyler, and Aaron have inherited their father and uncle’s businesses. Running the ranch as well as handling the few store fronts in town that have their name plastered to them, the boys have been raised up to hate the Woodridge’s but with unexplainable reasons other than they just do. They don’t discover a reason to hate them until later on in life when, their mother and father are both gunned down in opposite sides of town. Their father gunned down out in the fields of his own ranch while their mother, accompanied by Tyler was gunned down outside the mechanic shop they have invested in. It was unknown to the boys at the time, but the Marshall parents were made as sacrifices to Casimare. This only fueled the hatred and rivalry between the two families as nothing could be proven and it was a closed case, easily bought out by the Woodridge’s of course. The Evil feeds off of hate and anger and rage as well as bodily sacrifices so to encourage such venom from a family it brought Casimare great happiness and fuel. 

                2. Daniels; Logan is the only known bastard of David Woodridge. He is an unknown figure in Logan’s life and it is not known to him that David is his father, his mother died before she could confess this to him. Logan came from a very poor family with it just being him and his mother, and her main source of income was working as a maid at motels. She eventually took a job at the motel in Woodridge, The stars fire motel owned by the Bridges. Unbeknownst to her that this very motel was the one David Woodridge as well as any of his business partners, cult members, and or other acquaintances used for their darker business needs. After about four months of working there, David noticed her before she noticed him and with the potential scandal hanging over his head he decided to make a deal, one that lead to Logan and his mother having a car wreck that took her life. It briefly stole Logan’s for four minutes, but because he is a Woodridge he returned to this world. Promised in blood between his fathers family and The Evil, no harm should come to a Woodridge so long as the blood payment is made. Logan returned to this realm paranoid and afraid, for now he could see the dead that wandered through the world along side the living. 

                3. Sanders; Glenn is the new Sherriff in town. Sadly his coming to Woodridge was not for a change in scenery but based in a heated and scornful revenge. He was in the military when he was younger, before he was put into a ‘Dog Solider’ program that altered his DNA. Changed him from a normal man to one that could shift his skin into a beast, and the program had been disbanded after five years of service. It was unfortunate but Glenn lost several fellow men on his team for being deemed too “aggressive” to re-enter society. Glenn passed his test with flying colors and was on his way home to Looter’s Bay, where he eventually met Patricia Gonzalez (his now ex wife). It wasn’t long before the two were married and they had their daughter Maple, Glenn was working hard to keep his secret and build a life for him and his new family. It wasn’t until expansions began popping up in Looter’s Bay did things began to shift for the worst. David Woodridge began to develop stores, drugs, drinking, and more into Looter’s Bay and even more questionable act beneath the surface of the calm cape island town. Glenn had made a point to investigate and discovered fairly dark things about the business man, but before he could expose him Glenn’s life was torn to pieces. Two dead fishermen ripped to shreds and it was his name slapped across their deaths, framed for attacking them and outing his Dog solider past it left a dull and bleak future for him. His wife divorced him and took his daughter away, the military stepped in to keep this case silent from the media, and after about three months in jail when more attacks took place in similar fashions he was released. He had nothing to return too, even his own parents were too scared to speak to him. So he packed up his bags and headed west to a town named Woodridge Hollow, where a Mayor Deere too pity on him and hired him as the local Sherriff. It’s unknown to Glenn but the genetic splicing that was done to make the Dog solider program, had been infiltrated by a cult member. The cults influence by the time had spread nation wide and left several in positions of power and motion, and there the cult had used pieces of The Evil’s DNA and it had been used on Glenn. 

            4. Hattfield’s; Lauren and Elizabeth have always been treated different. With their grandfather being a Woodridge these girls have always been able to get what they want, that was until their mother divorced their father. The marriage itself had originally been planned out by their grandfather and left their mother miserable until she had enough and divorced their dad. Afterward she was exiled from the family's affairs and money, but her daughters were not shunned. Lauren began to crack under the pressure of her mother maiden name, attempting to be perfect in everything she did so much so that it nearly caused her several nervous breakdowns before she was taken to a therapist and helped with her issues. Elizabeth disgusted by the towns behavior and treatment to her mother moved off to Lilanvale, and became a veterinarian. It was there that she married Harry Pruitt (now ex husband). It wasn't obvious at the time, but in the years to come he became abusive and violent. Elizabeth took her bait of it until she could no longer stand it and ran away taking her things and heading back to Woodridge Hollow, where she moved in with her younger sister. Harry attempted to follow her, made it into the town limits and began asking questions before he vanished. No one is aware of what happened to him but her uncle’s and Claire Dredge’s father, the very men who abducted him and savagely murdered him in the name of Casimare. The story of his abuse was seen by The Evil and as it promised it would protect their family, and in doing so it craved Harry Pruitts flesh.              --- Pruitts; Mitchell is a detective from the outer cities, who had noticed his younger brother had taken missing. Unable to locate his brothers wife and or his brother the eldest Pruitt became nervous, before he tracked her down to Woodridge Hollow. Where he has since questioned her and inquired about his brothers whereabouts only to discover she had left him due to his abusive nature and had not seen him sense. There is a gut feeling that Mitchell has though that his brother was in Woodridge Hollow and he has yet to leave, while residing in the The Star’s fire motel on the edge of town he soon is abducted and learns the truth behind his brothers disappearance. He too is sacrificed to Casimare, only to return not entirely himself but part of The Evil as well. 

            5. Dredge ; Claire is starved. Her father Walter Dredge is a deacon for the Woodridge Parish (the cult), he has became a “pillar” in fact in showing his loyalty. He displayed this loyalty by murdering his wife in front of his 16 year old daughter. What is unknown to Walter though, is that something awoken in Claire the day she watched her mother die by his hand. A deep and starved hunger that is fed by rage and hatred. Its no surprise that this happened since Walter dredge consumed some of Casimare’s blood before he slept with his late wife Lila. In that act alone the conception of Claire was stained, and when she came into this world she was a piece of The Evil. Spread out like a viral disease it infect anything it touches, and she is apart of it. She does not know it, but she knows she is different. Its in the voice she hears in her head that speaks to her and the insatiable hunger she is struck with that will bring her to her knees, before it it soothed by the blood of a raw steak or the blood of a terrified animal. Only two people know these habits of her and its her closest friends Toby and Ran, who have witnessed what can happen should she not eat. Walter Dredge is unaware that his daughter possess the same hunger that Casmiare does, since she fled the church and his home after her 18th birthday. 

           6. Westfield’s; William, Charles, Baker, and Guine are to inherit the cult their father and fathers before them have built up. In the beginning all the children were on board with the Cult’s following and believing that Casimare was a god for them to follow and believe in, but as time went on it became clear to the children that he was no such thing. William was the first to break away from the cults touch and beliefs when his father was called upon by Casimare to perform a loyalty sacrifice. William ignorant to the truth volunteered to assist his father, only to be met with the painful realization that he was going to die. It was then that William’s father showed he could not kill his son but could only saw off his left arm and give it to Casimare. While the rest believed The Evil ate William’s arm, only William knows that Casimare absorbed it and now uses it as his own limb. Even now as William is older he can sometimes feel his old arm and can sense what Casismare is touching and doing with it. Charles (william’s twin), has not lost his faith and is aspiring to take his fathers place before the church and lead in their worship of Casimare, he had granted his full faith to The Evil and has since shunned his brother William for his rejection of the faith. It is Charles who helps the cult choose their victims, and he is able to hide the deaths from the papers as he is the editor for the Woodridge paper. Baker is also dedicated to the faith and takes part in watching from his post at the gas station on the outskirts of Woodridge, he has also been labeled a “fetcher” for he has come to follow Casimare’s order to abduct travelers when they stop for gas so that he may feed on them. Guine has turned her back on her family; for none know but her own father that she is made of The Evil. Just as Walter Dredge had done as did her father; consuming The Evil’s essence only to lay with a woman and make a child of its power. Her father deems Claire a failed test of faith and that Walter was not strong enough in his faith at the time he planted Claire, but would try himself with Guine. Guine is reckless and abandoned for she doesnt her The Evil’s voice as Claire does, but she can sense those who have been touched by it. Its a part of why she has taken to shutting herself up from others, and why she ran off to College as fast as possible to escape the darkness that looms over Woodridge. 

         7. Ellsie’s; Shane and Denis were raised by their grandmother ever since they were young, and she is all they have ever known. They are not familiar with the fact that she used to be apart of the Woodridge Parish (cult) church and a member, it was only after Casmire demanded a loyalty sacrifice of her did she flee the church itself and reject the faith. In doing so; to retaliate to her rejection The Evil took her daughter and son in law from her. Leaving her two young boys to look after she ensured that they knew to never trust the Woodrdige’s and those related to them, and to stick close to The Marshall family. Even as the years went on she kept the truth hidden until she lay on her death bed did she confess the truth to Shane, who swore to aid in whatever way possible with destroying the Woodridge’s. Denis grew up unaware of such information as Shane did not wish to drive him to the hatred he had, and to date Denis still does not know about the Cult or how his parents died and why. 

        8. Bridges; Donna Carol was left her fathers motel after his unusual passing, she became the rightful owner of The Stars fire motel. Donna isn't ignorant to the business her father and grandfathers were invested in with the Woodrdige’s, but she did not agree with it. In her distaste for the Woodridge’s acts and behavior upon her fathers dead did she reject and turn away the Woodridge’s funding and or partnerships. Its unknown to her but her father tried to break partnership with David Woodridge and was murdered for such an act later on. Donna rejects David Woodridge and bans him from her motel, but in doing so does terrifying things began to happen at the motel. Ghosts are seen, demons are raved about, and more horrific episodes are beginning to take place. And Donna has a dark suspicion that David Woodridge is behind every bit of it.
