Harley and Indian duke it out in hilarious King of the Baggers race – New Atlas
If racing is in your blood, you’ll race any damn thing. In Norfolk, England, they hold an annual World Snail Racing Championship. In Nanaimo, British Columbia, they’ve been racing bathtubs since 1967. The Ranch at Little Hills allows staff and guests to race toilets. And at the hallowed tarmac of California’s Laguna Seca last weekend, a brand new race managed to combine the speed of a snail, the…

Sporting Event Of The Week (23)
News has reached me, slowly of course, that this year’s Snail Racing World Championship has taken place, as it has for the last 50 years, at the Congham Fete in Norfolk.
The competition saw 215 molluscs slugging it out in a series of heats to determine who could complete the 13-inch course in the fastest time. Winner of the prestigious trophy replete with lettuce leaf was Sammy, owned by Maria…

Porsche Paradise: Rennsport Reunion IV
Starting this Thursday at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is the return of Rennsport.  The Rennsport Reunion VI returns to the rolling hills of Salinas in what will be a full sensory overload of all things Porsche.  It is a living and breathing display of Porsche history for four full days that will by all predictions, rival and surpass anything in the automotive and motorsports world.    We covered the last Rennsport Reunion back in 2015 and were blown away at the size and atmosphere of the event.  We live and breath cars and car culture, but we left the last one in utter silence taking days to process what we witnessed.  It was so much we wrote about it in two separate post here and here.
This time around, Rennsport could be even bigger, if that’s even possible.  This year is also the 70th anniversary of the brand, creating what is sure to be additional motivation to make it an unforgettable weekend.  The theme this year is “Marque of Champions” which will highlight the legends of the brand: championship-winning Porsche race cars, the engineers who designed them and the men who drove them to victories around the world.  Approximately 50 legendary drivers, 500 historic and customer cars, including 350 cars in competition, and the full Porsche Factory racing team will be in attendance. As a highlight, the original 356 “No. 1” Roadster will be on display, giving all Porsche enthusiasts a look at the car whose shape, dynamic design, and lightweight construction has inspired all Porsche sports cars.
This year will also feature a historic line up of Porsche drivers.  Hurley Haywood, the most successful American endurance driver ever; Brian Redman, co-creator of Porsche Rennsport Reunion and racing driver extraordinaire, Vic Elford, who is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his legendary 1968 season, Norbert Singer, lead engineer known as the father of the Porsche 962 as well as the man behind the Carrera GT V10 engine; and Jacky Ickx, six-time Le Mans winner.  Overall, there will be 50-plus legendary drivers on hand.
Twelve current Factory Drivers will also be at the Monterey track, including Patrick Long, Earl Bamber, Timo Bernhard and the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans GTE Pro winning trio of Kévin Estre, Laurens Vanthoor and Michael Christensen.
Porsche will also demonstrate something unexpected, Tractors.  Porsche manufactured tractors until 1963 in partnership with industrial firm Mannesman, and on Saturday and Sunday two Porsche tractors will take to the track, Le Mans style as drivers will run to their tractors and start the engines in a race over the first five corners of the track.  The race is expected to take 15 minutes.
We will bring you sights and sounds from that snails paced spectacle and from any others that happen over the weekend. Stay tuned on our Facebook and Instagram pages if you want to follow along. We will bring you all the Porsche action we can this weekend and in the weeks to follow.

Having just watch the same Direct you have, Nintendo’s presentation may not have been as explosive as expected, but DAMN! Smash looks simply incredible and so, because there is a lot to cover, including new fact sheets for Fire Emblem Three Houses and Super Mario Party, here’s a Digest dedicated to catch you up on what you may have missed, starting with a video of the direct:
Nintendo Smashes E3 with 2018 Lineup, Details About Super Smash Bros. Ultimate:
Fortnite Arrives Today on Nintendo Switch; New Super Smash Bros., Pokémon Games and Many More All Launching This Year
LOS ANGELES, June 12, 2018 – Nintendo opened its activities for the annual E3 2018 video game trade show with a bang – and a smash. Showing world-first footage of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo shared details about the latest entry in a series with sales of more than 40 million units worldwide. A new game built for the Nintendo Switch system, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lets up to eight players square off in action-packed battles that are all about smashing beloved video game characters off the screen. Legendary game worlds and fighters collide in the ultimate showdown at E3 2018, which runs through June 14 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Nintendo made its announcements during its Nintendo Direct: E3 2018 video presentation, which can be viewed at https://e3.nintendo.com. “At E3, we’re showing how Nintendo Switch continues to redefine play, with the broadest range of games people can enjoy together anytime, anywhere,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. “Fans who’ve debated which Super Smash Bros. fighter is the best now have the chance to settle their differences once and for all, pitting familiar faces against fresh challengers on stages both new and old. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, and the arrival of Epic’s Fortnite on Nintendo Switch demonstrate the strong momentum Nintendo Switch continues to have through 2018 and beyond.”
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will include every single fighter ever featured in the series’ nearly two-decade run, making it one of the biggest crossover events in gaming history. Fans can enjoy returning favorites like Ice Climbers and Pokémon Trainer, as well as newly announced fighters like Ridley from the Metroid series and Inkling from the Splatoon series. The game supports a variety of controller options, including Nintendo GameCube controllers (original or newly designed), Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. With Nintendo Switch, players can throw down whenever and wherever they like in Handheld or Tabletop mode while enjoying online play.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate combines many stages and new items, with gameplay that makes it easy for players of all skill levels to jump in. All current Super Smash Bros. series amiibo figures are compatible with the game, and any fighter’s amiibo figure from other series will also be supported. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is set to launch on Dec. 7, exclusively for Nintendo Switch. It is being developed by Nintendo, Sora, Ltd. and BANDAI NAMCO Studios, and is directed by Masahiro Sakurai.
Nintendo also announced that Fortnite, the Battle Royale phenomenon from Epic Games, is available for Nintendo Switch – TODAY. Players can download it for free from the Nintendo eShop, then test their mettle in thrilling crucibles of combat. The action never stops with Fortnite on Nintendo Switch, where players can build and battle together anytime, anywhere. Team up online with friends in the same room or around the world. Weekly updates and new gameplay modes will keep the action fresh for seasoned Fortnite players and newcomers alike.
At its E3 booth this week in the Los Angeles Convention Center, Nintendo will give attendees their first chance to play Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, two Pokémon games launching for the Nintendo Switch system on Nov. 16 at a suggested retail price of $59.99 each. Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! are a new way to experience Pokémon that lets players adventure with their partner Pokémon in the vibrant Kanto region, discover fresh and exciting Pokémon encounters and Trainer battles, as well as share the adventure cooperatively with a friend anytime, anywhere on one Nintendo Switch system. Players can even transfer Kanto region Pokémon into the game from the Pokémon GO app. These games serve as an entry point to the Pokémon series for newcomers, but they also provide fun and engaging experiences for Pokémon fans of all ages. A new accessory, called Poké Ball Plus, comes with Mythical Pokémon, Mew and is sold separately from the games. Poké Ball Plus includes a pressable analog stick and button, so players can control the new games entirely with the accessory, if they want. Nintendo is announcing two bundles, in which players can get Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! with one Poké Ball Plus at a suggested retail price of $99.99 each.
Other upcoming items announced during the Nintendo Direct include:
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Expansion Pass owners also will gain access to Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country to be released on Sept. 14. In this new story mode, players uncover the full history of Jin and the fall of his homeland, Torna, which existed 500 years before the events of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. This new storyline also will be available as a stand-alone retail package on Sept. 21. Full purchase details can be found at Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country.
Super Mario Party: Inspired by the original Mario Party board game play, the beloved series is coming to Nintendo Switch with new mini-games and play styles that make use of the Joy-Con controllers. Super Mario Party includes features like character-exclusive Dice Blocks that add depth to players’ strategy. Up to four players take turns rolling the dice, and individually race across the board searching for Stars. In Toad’s Rec Room, new gameplay links two games and two Nintendo Switch systems for side-by-side fun. The game launches Oct. 5.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses: A new episode of the Fire Emblem series comes to Nintendo Switch for the first time in spring of 2019. The player can maneuver the main character freely and interact with other characters to build relationships and gather information at various points within the game. This turn-based tactical RPG will put new strategic twists on battling, with formations of troops supporting individual units on the battlefield. Players will get to know three main characters – Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude – who play key roles in the story.
DAEMON X MACHINA: A new fast-paced mech action game from Kenichiro Tsukuda is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2019. Players take their customizable Arsenal powered suit on a variety of missions to thwart the enemy at all costs. They can choose and equip their Arsenal with a multitude of weapons, obtain more from downed enemies and swap them on the fly to suit their strategy in the face of ever-changing threats.
Overcooked! 2: The kitchen mayhem returns in this sequel from Team17 and Ghost Town Games that’s brimming with even more recipes, characters, kitchens and co-op madness. Bake, barbecue or broil with up to three other players in wireless local and online play modes. Save the world from clumsy cooking when the frantic food-juggler arrives on Aug. 7.
Killer Queen Black: Redesigned from the ground up, the acclaimed arcade extravaganza that became a multiplayer phenomenon is coming to Nintendo Switch. Players can hop on a snail, hoard berries or wipe out the enemy’s queen to claim victory for their team in Liquid Bit and Bumble Bear Games’ Killer Queen Black, when it launches first on Nintendo Switch later this year.
Hollow Knight: Venture through the beautifully hand-drawn, mysterious landscapes of a vast forgotten kingdom in Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight, an action-adventure filled with gripping combat and haunting secrets. Hollow Knight on Nintendo Switch also includes the new items, areas, characters and bosses from the currently released contact packs – all available today.
Octopath Traveler: Players can take another early look at Square Enix’s upcoming fantasy epic when the Octopath Traveler Prologue Demo arrives June 14 in Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch. Play the demo, then use the save data transfer feature to carry your choices into the main game, once purchased, where players can live the stories of each of the eight travelers and freely explore the world of Orsterra. Octopath Traveler is scheduled to launch on July 13.
More great games are coming in 2018, including Dragon Ball FighterZ and Dark Souls: Remastered from BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment America, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus from Bethesda Softworks, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate from Capcom, EA Sports FIFA 19 from Electronic Arts and Starlink: Battle for Atlas from Ubisoft, which includes characters and content from Nintendo’s Star Fox franchise that are exclusive to the Nintendo Switch version of the game.

Ultimate game’s fighters famous, as well as other great digital games on Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. 10 Things Everyone Forgot About The Toyota MR2 | HotCars
New Post has been published on https://coolcarsnews.com/2021/01/05/10-things-everyone-forgot-about-the-toyota-mr2-hotcars/
10 Things Everyone Forgot About The Toyota MR2 | HotCars
Tumblr media
Toyota certainly knows a thing or two regarding making a good sports car. They are accountable for building quite a few historic and well-known sports cars over the years , a lot of them have left quite a mark upon history. Some of those are worth crazy amounts of money nowadays as well.
But , what happens when 1 day, the chief of Toyota has an concept to make a mid-engine, affordable sports car that will handles just as well as the best supercars, at a fraction of the cost, purchase price plus maintenance alike? The MR2. The particular MR2 is a somewhat underrated sports car , filled with cool specifics.
10 A good FWD Car... Backwards
Tumblr media
wsupercars. com
Once we already know, the MR2's engine hard disks the rear wheels. One of the most interesting reasons for the MR2, however , is exactly how Toyota pulled off the drive design. It turns out it was quite unorthodox.
Tumblr media
wallpaperaccess. com
RELATED: 10 Coolest Vehicles You Never Knew Were RWD
In layman's terms, the MR2 is quite actually an FWD car, except turned backwards. On the earliest MR2 versions, the rear axle and suspension elements were straight out of a Corolla, and if one were to look really closely, stuff like steering linkages in the FWD Corolla was visible.
nine The Spyder Had been Faster Than The Miata
Tumblr media
topspeed. com
Although it may not be a difficult feat to achieve, the ultimate generation of the sporty MR2, called the Spyder, was actually a lot faster than the Miata. For research, when the MR2 Spyder ski jacket arrived on the scene, the NB was the Miata generation for sale at the time .
Tumblr media
wsupercars. possuindo
Even though the MR2 Spyder had a slightly smaller hp figure, 138 compared to the Miata's a hundred and forty, it still managed to be somewhat bit quicker than its best selling roadster competitor. Of course , it was not all that important in the long-run, because the MR2 Spyder had the same thing in keeping with the Miata; it was all about the particular drive, save the speed for later.
almost eight The Turbo Was Incredible
Tumblr media
wikipedia. org
The first-generation MR2 from your 80s was available with a high performance engine, which made it reasonably quick. When the second generation, also known as the particular SW20, arrived in 1989, Toyota chose to crank up the forced induction in order to 11, by way of a turbocharger.
Tumblr media
mecum. com
The particular snail that Toyota bolted for their tiny sports car resulted in the appropriately named MR2 Turbo, also called the particular GT-S in foreign markets. The particular 3S-GTE in the back produced two hundred hp and 200 lb/ft torque capacity, mated solely to a 5-speed guide transmission. The best part is, after 1993, the MR2 Turbo was limited with T-tops.
7 Lightning McQueen?
Tumblr media
wikipedia. org
Ever since The disney produtcions and Pixar's Vehicles introduced young viewers to car culture in 06, numerous cars around the world have dazzling the iconic livery of the film's protagonist, Lightning McQueen. Amazingly, this particular MR2 Spyder race car has been endorsed by Disney themselves.
Tumblr media
pandora. nu
RELATED: We Can't Take a look at These Sad Pics Of Cars Left To Rot
Throughout the 2000s, The disney produtcions supported race championships like the JGTC, in which the MR2 Spyder was contending at the time. The end result was a race vehicle that looked like a mid-engined, traveling car Lightning McQueen. It also included a small pair of eyes within the windshield. It might look like a Spyder, yet this monster and the road vehicle share little to no components.
6 Name Alter
Tumblr media
caranddriver. com
The MR2 is one sort of a car that didn't experience any kind of significant name changes depending on the marketplaces where it was sold. It was the MR2 almost everywhere, except in Italy and Belgium.
Tumblr media
wsupercars. possuindo
When examine in French, "MR2" sounds like french word "merde". Needless to say, Toyota instantly got to work with the best attempts to improve the name to avoid misinterpretation and to ensure it is more appropriate. In the end, they settled to get MR and MR Spyder. Because of this, the MR2 Spyder was the MR Spyder only in Italy and Belgium, while in Japan it had been known as the MR-S.
5 The Origin Story
Tumblr media
drivermod. california
One of the most fascinating things to know about the MR2 is certainly its origin story . Back in the 1970s, Akio Yoshida, a part of Toyota's testing department, got the idea of a compact car that would supply great handling and dynamics, with no hampering fuel economy all that a lot.
Tumblr media
superstreetonline. com
Toyota's engineers eventually completed on a mid-engine layout with 2 seats. Because it was a fun circle with a midship layout and 2 seats, it became a Midship Runabout Two Seater, which ultimately got abbreviated to MR2. The particular SA-X prototype was the result of the particular team's efforts at first, and eventually, it had been morphed and finessed into the MR2.
4 They're Nevertheless Affordable
Tumblr media
wsupercars. com
As mentioned previously, just about any single one of Toyota's sporty versions have shot up in value considerably, with the Mk4 Supra leading the way. Because the MR2 doesn't get nearly just as much attention, or indeed, as much as this deserves, prices have stayed fairly low.
Tumblr media
mecum. com
A potential buyer need to expect to pay a five-figure sale price for a pristine one, but somewhat rattier ones can be found for some really low prices. What's more, the MR2's powertrains can take a beating, and there is certainly quite a bit of aftermarket support. If everything else fails, there are tons of engine exchange opportunities as well.
3 The Group B Prototype
Tumblr media
drivetribe. com
Once the MR2 finally arrived in the mid-1980s, Toyota decided that it deserves an area on the Group B rallying main grid. They set about tooling and trying out an original AW11 MR2 and preparing it for Group B responsibilities, which resulted in the bonkers 222D.
Tumblr media
pinterest. com
RELATED: Ranking The 10 Many Brutal Monsters Created For Group W Rally
The 222D, although based on a good MR2, shared little to simply no parts with the production model. Just by the figures alone, the 222D was absolutely insane. The motor could be tuned to produce up to 750 hp, in a car that considered only 1, 650 lbs . Sadly, by the time it was finished, the writing was on the walls for Group B, and Toyota never actually got to race this.
2 The SARD MC8-R
Tumblr media
shakotantoday. com
Although the MR2's rallying story was never written, not to mention told, the little two-seater saw achievement in other motorsports. Toyota's Sigma Sophisticated Research Development team, also known as SARD, took an SW20 MR2 plus built a totally insane machine from it.
Tumblr media
gtsupreme. com
The resulting car was your MC8-R . Designed for the GRAND TOURING class, the MC8-R looks like exactly what might have happened if Hennessey Efficiency used the SW20 MR2 instead of the That lotus Exige as a basis for the Venom GT. In the back, there's no weak 4-cylinder, but rather Toyota's legendary 1UZ-FE V8, tuned to develop 600 horsepower.
1 The Meaning From the Name
Tumblr media
wikipedia. org
One of the coolest reasons for the MR2 was undeniably the name. Toyota's focus groups plus marketing teams scrambled to find a suitable name for the little two-seater, till they decided to look at some of the specialized details of the car that the company made.
Tumblr media
evo. co. uk
Eventually, they observed, the result of Toyota's engineering work a new mid-engine layout, or midship, this had only two seats, plus it was a fun, throw-into-corners and easy to operate a vehicle fast runabout. After arranging plus abbreviating these pieces of info, they will ended up with MR2, standing for M idship R unabout 2 Seater.

*slides over $20, half a pack of gummies, a bowling pin and a kidney* So. Uh. How about that snail racing AU.
ok i feel like i need like. just a little more peer pressure to actually cave and write a full fledged snail au. i know online i’m a wholeass idiot and the lame aunt trying to be cool on this site but IRL i have like an aura of mystique around me and if i write enemies-to-lover competitive snail racing au everyone will be able to sniff it out like horrible BO.
THAT BEING SAID HERE ARE SOME MORE OF MY IDEAS FOR THE SNAIL RACING AU:
– The first time Shiro insults Keith on live television, its so bad that Shiro has to have a good cry at the end of the night. How far he’s fallen, he thinks. What kind of person is he? He thinks, tenderly clutching the plastic tank with his snails in it as he cries himself to sleep
– SHIROS SPONSOR NOTICES HIS RIVALRY WITH KEITH. they egg him on to play it up. The video of Shiro delivering the worlds worst snail-pun goes viral on the YouTubes. They think its cus of the insults. Its actually because Shiro wore a too-tight tank top to the competition and everyone could see his slightly blurred but totally jacked figure in the background of the snail race track
- they keep up the enemy shtick up for a while but there is an undeniable physical chemistry between them and they fall into bed together. i still have no idea how this happens
– Keith initially resists being emotionally attracted to Shiro because he just can’t get in line with someone who gets so heated over snail racing.  however, he finds himself snapping back and he realizes he too is that person. he also sees Shiro feeding one of his snails a slice of mushroom backstage while tenderly cooing to it and his heart melts a little
– pidge ends up winning the world championships, and they tie for silver. they kiss on camera, and thats how they reveal their relationship and also create the third most viewed snail racing related video ever

Highs and lows. The Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Taupo is now postponed to early 2021 with no further info on date/venue. This may seem as a low, but I'm relieved to not be hanging and glad nothing more has been done by me than race registration (required upon acceptance). It'd be a stretch for our family anyway with kids. I received a snail mail "kudos" from USAT congratulating me on my 2019 All-American status. I ended up 36th of 2378 ranked in the M45-49 age group. That's up from 386th of 2403 in M40-44 in 2018. I can't wait to get back to swimming again and social activities once restrictions lift. And a haircut, of course. #quarantinehairdontcare I'm still thankful my neck bulged disc and cervical narrowing issue is in check, but it's not 100%. #triathlete #triathlon #triathlontraining #A2TriClub #im703wc #taupo #usat https://www.instagram.com/p/CANsrePggVW/?igshid=vtltv1nnhy33

Russell Westbrook and the Rockets are learning to grow together
Tumblr media
Russell Westbrook is pushing the pace for the Rockets this season.
Westbrook’s Rockets remain a work in progress.
On Halloween, one day after they sprinted past the Washington Wizards for a 159-158 victory, the Houston Rockets held a film session. Aside from pointing out defensive lapses, of which there were and continue to be many, the meeting’s focus was clear: Fast is good.
Houston’s offensive coordinator, Brett Gunning, stood in front of the room to point out all the different reasons why the Rockets were playing faster than they ever have before. Houston hadn’t been a snail under Mike D’Antoni, but last year they finished 27th in pace. At the time of this particular meeting, they ranked second.
As Gunning spoke, Austin Rivers caught Russell Westbrook’s eye. Both started to laugh. Afterwards, Gunning walked over and asked him what was so funny. “When you were talking about our tempo and why [it’s fast], I just looked at Russ,” Rivers said. “BG just said ‘yeah, that’s the real reason.’”
The Rockets have always wanted to accelerate their attack, but past personnel and a wise decision not to fix what wasn’t broken—they finished second in offensive rating last season—kept them from doing so. Their front office believes that more possessions simply gives them more chances to widen their lead. Luck becomes a little less relevant. In this area, Westbrook is the conduit they’ve been searching for.
“He’s one of the fastest I’ve ever seen,” Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni said. “It’s gotta be a blur a little bit on the sides. It’s just like going in the car, going 100 miles an hour.”
When he’s on the court, Houston sizzles up and down at a speed that begs for giant safety nets to be installed along the Toyota Center’s baseline. They currently lead the league in pace and average the fewest seconds per possession. After their opponent makes a basket, their possessions are almost a full second shorter than last year’s league leader: Westbrook’s Oklahoma City Thunder. Turnovers are an issue and a faster speed makes it harder to fortify their defense on the other end, but transition is where the Rockets can be their most unstoppable selves, and their new point guard is why. When Westbrook races towards the paint defenders must make a split-second decision: do we want to meet this demon in the paint or give up an open three?
“Not a lot of people know that, especially young guys. Everybody wants to score the basketball, score the basketball,” Harden said. “But he does an unbelievable job of using his athleticism to create opportunities for his teammates.”
It’s too early to say if Westbrook’s alliance with Houston will work, but what we do know is that championships are not won in the open floor. The Rockets have been at their best when Harden is on the court without his fellow MVP, and Westbrook’s force tends to lessen in half-court settings. The contrast between how he’s changed one area of his new team for the better while holding them back in another illustrates why this partnership is so fascinating. It’s a battle that could last as long as their relationship: Westbrook will either find ways to complement the Rockets or infect everything they stand for.
“You know, we’re not trying to change Russ. We’re bringing him here as the MVP and what he has done he’s done. Now can he just—we play a certain way—does he kind of move towards that a little bit? That’s on him. I hope he does. He has,” Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni said. “If you’re gonna have to change a guy, you might not want to bring him in in the first place. So he’s adapted and we’ve adapted to him also.”
The good news for Houston is that Westbrook is using his newfound space to live at the rim, where he’s attempted a career-high 48 percent of his shots. So far, he’s also more accurate than ever once he gets there. Since 2014 he has never made more than half his field goal attempts when driving to the rim. This season he’s shooting 63 percent.
Westbrook is, at once, the most confident human being who ever lived yet also constantly needing to prove himself.
“There’s nobody in the lane...in his way,” Brooklyn Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson said. “He’s got that ocean open to drive.”
The bad news is that he’s been one of the worst three-point shooters in the league, and the unnecessary long twos that only look smart when they go in still exist. When off the ball, some defenses stick to Westbrook, in constant fear of him rumbling through for an offensive rebound or tip dunk, and when he catches a kick-out there isn’t a closeout defender in the world who can stay in front of him.
Others have used Westbrook’s man to squeeze Harden, taking away the drive and either forcing a step-back three or pass. Harden’s field goal percentage in the restricted area is 11.1 percent higher when Westbrook is not by his side, which isn’t a coincidence. It can be an awkward dance, and plays like the one below show how hard it’s been for Westbrook to get comfortable being uncomfortable.
As Westbrook adjusts to a different basketball aesthetic, his minutes, shots, and touches are down to levels he hasn’t seen in quite some time, if ever. Two years ago he averaged 5.72 and 5.34 seconds and dribbles per touch, respectively. Right now he’s down to 4.34 and 4.09. His stints have changed, too: A rhythm player if there ever was one, Westbrook is exiting games earlier than he ever has, resting through the middle of quarters in the same way Chris Paul once did.
He’s also used to having the ball in his hands more than everybody else. Last season, it was 4.3 more minutes per game than Paul George, and in their first year as teammates that number was 6.3. Now, Westbrook has possession of the ball for three fewer minutes than Harden. Some of that sacrifice is self-made, which is truly incredible coming from someone who treats every possession like it’s an outtake from the last 30 minutes of Goodfellas, and packs more please don’t try this at home fury into any one game than some players are able to unleash in an entire career.
But a general concern felt by the Rockets that may linger throughout the season is how insecurities held by most NBA megastars can subconsciously impact their own on-court decisions. Even when they wear the same jersey, stars are uber-competitive with other stars; Houston is toast if jealousy trickles onto the floor. It’s still early, and the season is long enough to draw raw feelings from even the best of friends, but so far Westbrook has been reserved in noticeable and necessary ways, embracing the fact that every play is no longer designed with his individual success in mind. From Houston’s perspective, the key is for Westbrook to realize that, as a ringless 31-year-old, he might need the team as badly as they need him.
“He has surprised me,” Rivers said. “I think he has adjusted his game. I mean, I think he knows James is by far our best scorer. Russ could be much more aggressive if he wanted to but I think he knows we wouldn’t win as many games because James is already shooting...James shoots a lot [laughs].
If he was trying to average 30 every game [while] James is trying to average 30 every game, it’d just be a shit show, and guys would start to say stuff and be unhappy, because everybody wants the ball, you know what I mean? I think he took a backstep in scoring for James...I think he’s looking to pass even more than he ever has.”
Despite collecting 300 more assists than any other NBA player over the past 10 years, currently leading the league in corner three assists and trailing only LeBon James and Luka Doncic in potential assists, Westbrook is better known for the scorched-earth, self-serving decisions that didn’t exactly motivate Kevin Durant or George to stay for the long haul as his teammate. That reputation is hard to shake.
But if he continues to accept that the team he plays for isn’t his—particularly in the postseason, against coaches who have time to exploit Westbrook’s need to do everything himself—that revelation can unlock the more supportive part of a skill-set Houston needs if it wants to be the last team standing.
“It’s a process but it’s not nothing that I haven’t seen,” Westbrook said. “So my job is to throw the ball where they gon’ be not where I think they gon’ be, and that’s the most important part about playmaking and making the right plays. And that’s all I do.”
That’s sort of what this is all about: Westbrook’s partnership with Houston hinges on a delicate balance between how they need him to fit in and the many ways he’s always wanted to stand out.
Westbrook is, at once, the most confident human being who ever lived yet also constantly needing to prove himself. He’s still prone to turning his one-on-one matchup into a holy war that harms his team more than the opponent.
But he isn’t taking the bait as often as he used to, and more mature elements of Westbrook’s game are still in bloom. “He’s still aggressive. He’s always been aggressive,” Rockets guard Thabo Sefolosha, who was Westbrook’s teammate for five years in Oklahoma City, said. “I think he understands the game better [now], rotations, where guys are open.”
One difference in Houston has been that instead of tallying assists because the defense is forcing him to pass, Westbrook is now assisting teammates when the defense wants him to shoot—similar to how Draymond Green realized he had to give up open open looks for the betterment of his Golden State Warriors. Look how he threads the needle to PJ Tucker; he’s wide open but doesn’t even look at the rim.
“He’s really good at finding the open guys. The right guys,” Tucker said. “I don’t know anybody who can guard him one on one and stay in front of him every time, so they’ll try to pre-rotate and come help.”
Westbrook has made steps in the right direction, but setting out to correct his flaws may be a lost cause—like negotiating with a pyroclastic cloud or telling a Tyrannosaurus Rex to go vegan—and even if he starts making the most brilliant passes in NBA history none of this will matter if he continues to hit just 14 percent of his spot-up threes while enabling a defense that’s routinely gored.
As a best-case scenario, the Rockets will eventually get Westbrook to buy into their tried and true philosophy. He’ll push the ball, live at the rim, crash the glass, and continue to set up his teammates while also eliminating the early-clock jump shots and hopeless gambles that hurt Houston on both ends. Less can be more, and there’s still enough fundamental talent here for him to put them over the top. But at the same time, if Westbrook’s stubbornness continues to invade possessions that otherwise would not self-combust, he can obliterate everything the Rockets built.
On a new team, surrounded by different teammates, coaches, and principles, the hope is he’ll find a way to favor the more brilliant dimensions of his game while bypassing everything about it that makes D’Antoni, Daryl Morey, and even his teammates want to pull their hair out.
Both sides must evolve for this to ultimately work, and so far we’ve seen them oscillate between growing pains and a breathtaking fireworks display. But to get where they want to go, Westbrook must commit even more than he already has. The Rockets are built to win it all. In many ways, it’s up to him if they ever will.

When I’m in foreign parts I can sit for hours and admire the agility of chaps as they shin up coconut trees. Feet with rock hard skin, strong leg muscles and a head for heights seem to be the order of the day. I was pleased to learn this week that George Iona from the Cook Islands has been proclaimed the first world champion coconut tree climber, scaling an eight metre tree in just 5.62 seconds,…
