RG 1/144 S.N.R.I Prototype Mobile Suit XM-X1 "Crossbone Gundam"
RG Crossbone!!!! This is the 2015 remake of the kit under Gunpla Evolution Project, and it's one of the most detailed gunpla in terms of features that I've build so far!
The Crossbone was a bit of a tricky build, due to its much smaller size and large amount of small moving parts. This can make assembly pretty fiddly. Furthermore, being a newer RG it lacks the pre-built inner frame, apart from a specialized piece for the X-shaped booster unit/core fighter, which made it take a lot longer than I was expecting.
The set builds the X1 Crossbone Gundam, as well as the accompanying and iconic Jupiter core fighter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This little fighter slots in neatly to the Crossbone's chest cavity by folding down the nose and folding up the vulcan cannons. A neat feature is that despite the absolute miniscule size of the fighter, the cockpit opens and you can even see a little headrest and console! You can even see the core fighter cockpit when you open up the cockpit access hatch from the front.
Tumblr media
The kit also comes with a large number of optional parts, including 8 pre-moulded hands and a number of weapons.
Tumblr media
There's a plastic moulded anti-beam coat, as well as a really neat beam rifle (the Zanbuster) that can split apart into the Buster Gun (modeled after a flintlock pistol) and the high powered beam saber, the Beam Zanber. This comes with a really nicely molded effect part that is UV reactive.
There are also parts on the arms that swing forwards to either produce a beam weapon called the Brand Marker, or alternatively a Beam Shield (both also moulded in the same UV reactive trans-pink plastic).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the most fiddly sections of this build was the front-skirt, as this piece can transform into a scissor-anchor (similar to the shoulder mounted ones from SEED). A neat detail is the plastic moulded chain that attaches to the anchor, however, the use of this instead of the more common malleable wire makes it difficult to pose the part in anything other than a rather stiff position.
Tumblr media
The kit even includes the hidden leg-daggers, although unfortunately only the handle fits into the calves, with the blade being a separate piece.
Tumblr media
Overall this is one of the most impressively detailed RGs I've even built, especially in terms of the included gimmicks and optional parts.
The kit itself is pretty impressively posable, with extra forearm rotation, although the kit does have trouble raising its shoulders too far, and like a lot of RGs it can feel a little unbalanced.
Despite these issues I definitely recommend this kit, although probably for more experienced builders due to the more complex techniques.

Build Year 2019 in Review
First off, happy new year to everyone here! Just wanted to celebrate what is my second year into model building by reflecting on the 5 builds that I thought defined the year for me.
High Grade WS-G-XXV Gundam Kimaris Venandi
Tumblr media
Clutching in at first is my most ambitious build to date: my first kitbash custom gunpla. I've always wanted to build and paint a custom gunpla since I started building, and I've always had these backstories in mind. I also wanted to put building and painting skills to the test before the end of the year.
2. Real Grade Nu Gundam
Tumblr media
This kit was an unprecedented experience personally. The build was pretty much prefect and I enjoyed almost every second of it. The kit handles like a dream and I spent hours testing out different poses. A trully defining milestone in Gunpla development.
3. High Grade MS-06S Zaku II Type S Char Aznable Custom
Tumblr media
This was the build where I really began to hone my fledgling skills in painting, detailing, seam line removal and decal application. It was also my first Char mobile suit. Fantastic kit to go all out on.
4. Real Grade XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam
Tumblr media
Aside from being the smallest Real Grade to date along with all the engineering that was needed to make that happen, this kit was probably the most fun kit for me this year. Great handling combined with a large inventory of accessories ensures a joy filled experience when it comes to posing this Gundam. Also got me into the Crossbone Gundam storyline.
5. 1:72 T-70 X-Wing [Custom Colors]
Tumblr media
I've always meant to get into Bandai's Star Wars line, and I wasn't disappointed. A relatively simple builds meant I got to spend more time on painting and detailing rather than nub mark clean up and seam line removal. Every one of these kits comes with a sizable sheet of water slide decals which should be a standard for Bandai kits.
2019 was my second year into building Gunpla (and now other models). I've learned even more about building than I did in 2018. For 2020, I'm aiming to be more project based like with Project Rivarly, instead of building on impulse aside from a few exceptions. 2020 is looking to have another great release lineup though, and that High Grade the Origin RX-78-2 is looking awesome. Thank you as always for following me on my building journey and here's to ushering in a new decade!

I don’t have anything to review this week. I had plans to do a few BeastBoxes, and held out until the end for them to get here, but Customs has been a right pain with slower shipping over the past few months. Instead, I thought it might be fun to go over the past years worth of builds I did and see which ones I enjoyed the most, whether it be because the build itself was fun, I put a lot of work into it, or the end result was just neat.
RX-零/覚醒 RX-Zeromaru Shinki Kessho
These aren’t in any particular order, but we’ll start with the updated Zeromaru. While this wasn’t a particularly interesting kit from a build perspective, it did have a fun gimmick. It’s mostly on here because this was the first time I recolored every part in order to color match. I’ve done it a few times since then (mostly with gold pieces), but this one was particularly interesting since I’d done the kit before without doing so, so seeing the two of them next to each other was really cool and felt like I was really stepping up as a builder.
Tumblr media
GN-0000DVR/S/HWS Gundam 00 Sky HWS
While this build had a couple issues, I had a lot of fun with the 00 Sky; I tried some different panel lining techniques, experimented with paint to emphasize details, and the HWS was the last kit I added to my first series display. While the overall plot may not be the best, I stand by that Build Divers is a very good series if you’re looking to find some Gunpla Builder inspiration.
Tumblr media
OZ-08MS-SP-K Leo Kanabo
This was the last custom Leo I built, and ended up being one of the ones I’m most happy with. It doesn’t deviate very far from the original Leo’s design, but the ways that it does are very simple and effectively get the design intent across. Still wish I could have gotten that hip skirt to look a little better, though.
XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam X-1
RGs aren’t very fun to build. They look great on a shelf, and can be fun at times to pose (if you’re not building a rickety one), but are typically something you build for the end result. While the Crossbone is no exception, it gets some bonus points for effectively using its parts and being one of the cheapest RGs to date. It also has a ton of accessories, gimmicks, and effect parts for its price, and is probably my favorite RG I’ve built.
Matchless Raijin-Oh
Now we start getting into some non-Gundam stuff, with the only kit that’s not made by Bandai. Coming from Good Smile’s Moderoid line, Raijin-Oh feels like toy art. While not necessarily the most interesting build, the end result is fantastic, finding interesting ways to cheat anime proportions into both the combined form as well as the three separate mecha that make it up. Also, behind the scenes, totally forgot to attach Hou-Oh’s tail in every picture. Oops.
Tumblr media
eEXM-17SOS Alto Sub-Orbital Sniper Kai III
The only other custom on this list is, again, not from Gundam. The 30MM line is made for making custom units, and this was my first attempt with an idea I’d had in the back of my head for a long time: a sniper that attacks earth-bound enemies from orbit. I used four different upgrade kits to pull off the transformation from basic Alto to its third iteration, and it turned out great other than the very thick white paint. (I am my own biggest critic.) I know I say this every time, but you should totally look into 30MM if you haven’t; it’s a great way to create custom units with almost no barrier to entry.
PFF-X7 Core Gundam + PFF-X7/V2 Veetwo Gundam + PFF-X7/E3 Earthree Gundam + PFF-X7/M4 Marsfour Gundam
This is the coolest gimmick I think I’ve ever seen on a Gundam. While building Core Gundams has gotten a bit monotonous (and I may have to build a ton more of its new upgrade, at least one Core Gundam Rise, and maybe more than one Enemy Gundam Core), the end result is always fantastic from a meta perspective. While a lot of their parts are shared, the minor variations you can do to not only modify a Gunpla’s performance, but also its appearance is really cool. I’ll give extra praise to the Marsfour since it also inspired me to try doing some dry brushing techniques for the first time in a while.
Tumblr media
ZGMF-X19AK Gundam Justice Knight
Now this was a fun build. All kinds of added joints, special gimmicks, and good use of parts. This was also another time I did gold color matching if only because I painted the chest vulcans and wanted everything to match. But to be fair, I probably wouldn’t be as fond of it if I didn’t. It’s a poser’s Gunpla built to pose, and it can outlandishly do so. They did also announce a standard Infinite Justice release, if that’s more your thing.
WarGreymon (Amplified)
I’m a big Digimon fan, and I’ve talked before how I was disappointed that the Digimon Reboot model kit line went under after only one kit. WarGreymon was a Grey(t) reinvigoration of that old idea. He has amazing use of plastic at bizarre angles to create a very involved and interesting sculpt while still maintaining all of his recognizable elements. His main issue is he’s a brick, having joints but not the strength or sometimes clearance to move them. Still looks great, and is cheaper than most of your other options.
神竜合士 Valkylander
I’ve been giving a lot of love to Re:Rise, but they just keep producing solid kits (of their hero characters). The Valkylander is an SD Gundam with two separate combined modes, one of which is a dragon. This was also another case where I went ham on the paint to great effect. I believe the Avalanche Rex Buster parts release next month, and I’ll be excited to put those together. Y’know, before Par builds something else in season two that replaces them...
Overall, I built 27 model kits over the course of 2019, and I can’t help but feel I’ll end up building even more throughout 2020. I’ve got a few P-Bandai kits on the way, a massive 30MM custom project I’ve been collecting kits for, I’m going to be starting work on a Build Divers Sidestory Display, and the second season of Re:Rise is releasing in April. I’ve already got 16 model kits on the way or on preorder, and that’s just through April. If all goes well, hopefully this will be the last week I don’t have anything to review for a while.

New Paper Craft: XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam X-1 Free Papercraft Download
New Papercraft has been published on PaperCraftSquare: Link: http://www.papercraftsquare.com/xm-x1-crossbone-gundam-x-1-free-papercraft-download.html Paper Craft Name: XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam X-1 Free Papercraft Download Description:
This gundam paper model is XM-X1 Crossbone Gundam X-1, a testbed mobile suit in the Universal Century developed by the Earth Federation's Strategic Naval Research Institute (SNRI), featured in the manga series Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam, the papercraft is created by Keikei Factory, and shared by yenc. There is also a SD Version on the site available.
Unlike many mobile suits developed by the SNRI, which were designed for use around the Earth orbit, the F-97 is specifically designed to be used around Jupiter, whose strong gravity field would generate serious propulsion problems. For units operating on Earth and around Earth orbit, the problem of high mobility was solved putting numerous thrusters all over the mobile suit's body. However, under Jupiter's gravitational influence, this would require enlargement of the thrusters, leading to an increase of the mobile suit's size and mass. Moreover, in order to use the larger thrusters a larger and more powerful generator would be needed, adding to the general mass.
To solve this matter, Crossbone Gundam is equipped with long variable X-shaped thrusters, composed of four thrusters can be pointed at any direction: with the addition of AMBAC, the main thrusters allow high mobility around Jupiter's orbit, while combined into one huge rocket column they largely increased the unit's top speed, without increasing the size and mass of the mobile suit. Due to the fact that it was created to be used in Jupiter's orbit, when the F-97 is used on Earth it is more difficult for the pilot to control.
In order to increase the pilot survivability, the F-97 is equipped with a plug-in type core fighter, which the variable thrusters and the two standard beam sabers are attached to.
Though technically the Crossbone Gundams are general purpose mobile suits, they were designed with extra emphasis on their close range combat abilities. With their high mobility, the Crossbone Gundams easily outmaneuver most enemy mobile suits, allowing them to slip into close range and past the beam shield. Additionally, Crossbone Vanguard leader, Berah Ronah, sought to fight the war against the Jupiter Empire with as little loss of life as possible. With blades it is easier to take out a mobile suit without destroying the cockpit than it is with a beam rifle.
Another new feature utilized by the F-97 is the Anti-Beam Coating cloak, which can be stored in the back and unfolded when needed. When unfolded, it covered the entire body of the mobile suit, and dispersed beam energy over the cloak. It could usually withstand five standard beam shots without spending any energy, with the additional advantage of stealth. Other armaments included the standard beam sabers, daggers, scissor anchors and two brand markers, which could either act as beam shields or a shorter beam saber. Like its predecessor F91 Gundam F91, its "mouth" could be opened as a vent.
Four units in total were made, and all of them were given by SNRI to the Crossbone Vanguard. In order to cover this secret dealing, they were assigned the codes X-0, XM-X1, XM-X2, and XM-X3. [Source: wikia]
