You ever buy something and immediately realize “Oh, wait...”

That was me with this model kit. I was so excited for it, preordered it immediately after I saw it, and five minutes later I said “Oh, wait, they’re going to release a Full Cloth, aren’t they?” They haven’t announced it yet, but when they do, seeing as how much I enjoyed this one, I’m probably going to pick it up. I don’t know about an X-0, X-2, or an X-3, though, as they’re mostly just color variants like the Shortduck II and III.

The Good: This may be simultaneously one of the best, yet cheapest RGs they’ve ever put out. At around $20, the amount of posability, solidity, and accessories this unit packs is incredible.

It has a very wide range of movement, including things like a drop hip for more leg posability, double joints at all the right locations, a fully ball-jointed Booster, and an opening jaw that doesn’t require any kind of face or head swap.

It also has the most weapons and features I’ve ever seen packed into a unit this small, with an opening cockpit, a detachable Booster, built in and deployable Brand Markers, transformable Scissor Anchors, a fully combinable Zanbuster, Heat Daggers, extra Beam Sabers. Heck, it even comes with an equipable Rifle Grenade.

And it’s accomplishing this at a very small scale. This thing is advertised on the box as being the smallest RG, and it feels like it, as it is considerably shorter than most of the HGs I have on display, let alone something like the RG Unicorn which towers over it.

I’ll add, as I think it may relate to the possibly upcoming Full Cloth variant, that its shoulders have parts that disconnect and flip up that I think relate to the Full Cloth’s shoulder armor. Hope for things to come, and all that.

The Bad: There are some minor problems. While this unit is exceptionally solid on most accounts, there are a few places where things feel ‘loose.’ Not anything as bad as the RG Sinanju or Wing Zero, but “If I’m too rough this may fall off.” The Heat Dagger hilts in the back of its legs, the blades on the back of its ankles, and the cuffs are such pieces.

The cloak, while a cool addition, would have been nicer if it was some form of soft good. It has just the right amount of posability to not be in the way most of the time, but it’s very obviously plastic from all angles.

And then there’s that chest sticker, which really should have been... I dunno, but not a sticker. It looks terrible.

The Details: I did deviate a bit from my normal “panel lining only” treatment I usually give RGs. The main thing I did was add a little paint to the face. The red on the scars and the black in the Vulcans were me, as the Vulcans were white before and the scars were supposed to be stickers. I also only used the metallic decals and the chest emblem, choosing not to go all out with them as I find they peel with time, but the metallic ones are usually a little bigger and stick longer.

Overall, while I’m not sure this is a great “First RG,” if you’ve had experience with RGs in the past this is a great one to pick up just to see how much the concept has evolved. While they probably wouldn’t be the same Grade, I’d like seeing more units from Crossbone and its sequel mangas get some love. I’d personally be super interested in a Phantom or Anchor, as those are some designs I personally really dig.
