Ok so Star Trek: Enterprise really seemed to be improving in season 3 ever since they abandoned the shapeshifting lizard people as the series villain and stopped trying to put T'pol and Archer together but then we came across an episode last night that baffled us so thoroughly we stayed up for an extra hour just yelling into the void about it
So, Enterprise comes across this destroyed insectoid ship. The crew are dead and most systems are down and they dont know why. And then on the ship they find a hatchery of insectoid eggs. Babies. It's the most fortified section of the ship and the only section that still has life support.
Turns out, the crew cut power to their own life support in order to keep the hatchery running. They sacrificed themselves to save these babies. Phlox analyzes their anatomy and learns that they reproduce asexually, concludes there is likely a hatchery like this on every insectoid ship. So now we know two things: these children were loved, and the crew of this ship was not especially negligent for having them onboard, because this is a normal practice for their people.
Archer says "we gotta save these babies." The crew is skeptical, because saving the babies would take a lot of resources and put Enterprise in danger. For once i agree with Archer - they gotta save the babies. He makes a lot of really good arguments, like "we have a chance to show the Xindi that we're not the monsters they think we are," and "if this was a nursery of primate babies, you wouldnt think twice about saving them." That good Star Trek shit. No one actually directly refutes this argument, they just say they dont want to save the babies.
The whole episode goes on like this, with Archer fervently trying to save these babies while the rest of the crew stands around saying "idk i think the captain's going crazy." T'pol refuses a direct order to help with saving the babies, so Archer relieves her of command. This is seen as evidence that Archer is going crazy. Another insectoid ship shows up, and Reed blows them out of the sky without even attempting to communicate, so Archer relieves him of command as well. This is further evidence that Archer is going crazy.
Then the senior staff fucking mutinies. They say, "captain, youve taken this whole 'save these babies' thing too far, let us kill the babies." The babies have started to hatch and Archer is getting weird with it. They drag him off to sick bay and scan his brain - turns out, he was infected with some kind of alien pheromone that gave him an irresistable urge to protect these babies. He was not, in fact, following a moral code that compelled him to protect innocent life, or trying to set a good example for humanity as they join the interstellar community. He was just crazy all along! No attempt is made to refute the (very good) arguments he made in favor of saving the babies, the viewers are just meant to accept the premise that saving the babies isnt worth it actually, because it would take a lot of resources. Archer even says "yeah if i was normal i wouldve just let the babies die" and leaves it at that - no slow zoom in on his face as he realizes what that means about him, no speech about how humanity needs to outgrow old prejudices to see the sanctity of diverse life, the episode just leaves off on "those babies were creepy it wouldve been fine to kill them."
But the episode still makes a point to tell the viewer that the babies will survive, because the writers understand that when you put a bunch of babies in danger, people will naturally worry for their safety. Not the crew, though. It's super fine and normal that they were totally willing to let those babies die, the captain was definitely the crazy one for trying to save them.

ENT Rewatch Starlog, 27 April, 2024, supplemental: Episode 3.22 “The Council”
While Degra, T'Pol, and Archer plot to figure out how to approach the Xindi council, they realize the Spheres are networked by an artificial intelligence network. That memory core might provide more information on the Builders, whom Degra says are all but worshipped by many Xindi, particularly Reptilians.
Tumblr media
The Reptilians meanwhile have learned Degra destroyed a Reptilian ship to protect Enterprise.
T’Pol, Reed, Mayweather, and a MACO (read that as “Redshirt”) go on a mission to retrieve a memory core from a Sphere while Degra’s people and the Arboreals escort the NX-01 to the Council planet, and Archer and Hoshi enter the chamber built into a structure that was built millennia before by the now extinct Avian Xindi. The Reptilians, specifically their leader Dolim rail against Archer’s presence, but after some talk, they agree to hear more.
Tumblr media
Degra goes back to NX-01 where he will help make a hologram of the Sphere Builder from Phlox’s records they had on board who was testing the environment. He also tries to help Tucker with some power cells, and after a small altercation, they begin to cooperate, Trip finally seeing past his loss to what Degra is risking in helping them.
The Sphere expedition retrieves one of the memory cores, but a defense system kills the MACO in the process, leaving Reed reeling from the loss of yet another crewmen.
Tumblr media
After the new visual presentation begins to sway the Aquatics, Dolim has a change of heart and agrees to hear more evidence. Degra tells Archer he hopes this is the beginning of a new future, but Dolim has been talking to the Sphere Builders and plan to steal the weapon and attack Earth with the Insectoids; but first he goes to Degra’s room and murders him. The Xindi Primates warn Archer just as the weapon launches and the NX-01 joins a flotilla of Primate, Arboreal, and Aquatic ships in an attempt to stop them.  In the battle, Dolim beams Hoshi Sato off the bridge of Enterprise as the weapon and Dolim’s fleet enter a subspace vortex.
Tumblr media
Things are coming to a head now in the story, and it’s nice to see Archer truly stepping into his role of peacemaker, a great contrast from when he spoke with Daniels earlier in the season. Gratifying to see the progress he’s making, which makes the death of Degra and the launch of the weapon a real jolt when the story pulls that rug out from under us.
I have to admit, I am still looking a little askance and the fact the species with the mammalian heritage—Humans, Primates, Arboreals, and Aquatics—ally together while the Reptilians and Insectoids are the violent hold-outs. There’s a…xenophobia of some kind layered into that writing I think, and I might suggest it would be a little more “Star Trek” in its way if either of those two species were swayed. Maybe that’s just me.
Reed makes mention of 23 deaths in the crew, which is pretty significant for a group around 80-90.  It is nice to see he as completely accepted the MACOs as comrades now.
Not having rewatched these since the initial airing, I have to admit I had completely forgotten about Dolim taking Hoshi, and I am genuinely excited to find out where that story goes…thanks to my old-man brain, it’s like a whole new Enterprise story for me!
NEXT VOYAGE: The weapon is on its way to Earth, and Archer faces a “Countdown.”

another favorite thing about enterprise is giving the 5 distinct xindi species homologous structures to suggest common ancestry despite the fact that their lineage clearly divided them into separate species a long time ago.
from what i can tell, there are at least three, as each intelligent species from xindus have 1. an upright invagination in the tissue of their cheeks (or equivalent region of their face) 2. at least three bony protrusions inferior to that, and 3. each display a series of fanning ridges between their eyes, with larger respective ridges superiorly
as demonstrated in the xindi arboreals
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
* the foreheads of the primates are frequently covered in long gray hairs, so this is an image which displays their cranial ridges a little more clearly
the xindi primates
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the xindi reptilians
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the xindi insectoids
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*i think the insectoids are the best example of how these features change down the evolutionary pathway--what is represented as an invagination in flesh on the species descended from primates/reptilians/arboreal mammals/aquatic species is, in the insectoids, a tear-drop shaped opening. the basic shape remained the same, but the extra tissue has been discarded in favor of a lighter “design”, and the ‘bony’ protrusions, are likely an equivalent form of chitin, and are more pronounced in this species than in any of the others
and the xindi aquatics

The Xindi: The six separate sapient species that all evolved on the planet Xindus, forming the Xindi Counsil.
Tumblr media
“Arboreal” Xindi: Evolved from canopy dwelling fructivores, they have very little taste for both meat and violence. Due to their lanky mid-arms that they use to get around, they are quite slow walkers but excellent climbers and proficient in zero-g.
“Primate” Xindi: Smallest of the species, they are opportunistic generalists with a wide range of habitats and dietary options. Generally agreeable in disposition, if a bit jumpy by human standards.
Tumblr media
“Aquatic” Xindi: The most distantly related to the rest of the Council species, they sometimes have trouble relating to their colleagues. They are wonderful architects and do well in off-world environments.
“Insectoid” Xindi: Desert adapted omnivores with fiery tempers, they prefer to live in close family groups that operate almost like a multi-person individuals.
Tumblr media
“Avian” Xindi: A species of large, four-winged carnivores that were wiped out in the planet-spanning war that ended in the destruction of their planet.
“Reptilian” Xindi: Ectothermic obligate carnivores with the general temperament of a cornered animal (as described by a anon. human). Largest terrestrial Xindi species with an unfortunate habit of accidentally invading the personal space of their warm-blooded colleagues.
EDIT: Size comparisons

Entry 730: Xindi-Primates
Home World: Xindus
Occupation: Alien villains of the season
First Appearance: "The Xindi" (ENT, 2003)
Summary: Of the five surviving Xindi species, the Primates are often considered the most levelheaded, diplomatic, and intellectual, but also among the least resilient. During the Xindi-Human conflict, a Primate scientist was the designer and chief engineer of the second Xindi superweapon. However, the Primates ultimately abandoned the original plan to destroy Earth. For some time, the Xindi Council's opinions and intentions were split, with the Primates and Arboreals favoring sparing Earth, the Reptilians and Insectoids favoring its destruction, and the Aquatics largely indecisive. In the end, it was partly thanks to the efforts of the Primates that humanity survived...

I don’t know how well the science works out but as a species I really love the Xindi I love how even though the humanoid ones have very distinct designs you can also clearly see the similarities (the primates and the reptilians both have spikes on their upper cheeks, the primates and the arboreals have similar foreheads and those compressions on their cheeks, the reptilians and the arboreals have similar noses and the way the hair grows mimics the ridges on the reptilians face) so that you can tell they evolved from the same planet
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And it’s harder to see the similarities with the non humanoids because they’re made of terrible cgi versus good practical make up but I love that they decided to make them just completely alien and different than humans and the usual prosthetic on the forehead and call it a day

Awww this one primate Xindi has hope for a good outcome of the Human-Xindi relationship
Aquatics will help stop the weapon!!! Yey!!!
I’m sorry but the Guardian scenes just look weird
I love that everyone wants to rescue Hoshi
Malcolm is a pretty good overthinker, isn’t he?
I’m glad that Malcolm and Hayes are getting along
Hayes promises Malcolm to bring Hoshi home safely
PORTHOOOOOS
T’Pol will allow Trip to buy her a drink when they get back
SHE CONSIDERS BECOMING OFFICIALLY PART OF STARFLEET YESSSSSS
Space fiiiigggghhhhttttt
They are firing on the death star Xindi weapon!
Yooo, that huge ship is Aquatics?
