Summary: Yusuke sponsors a demon who was once brainwashed by Enma. (one of those stories I would turn into an epic longfic if got the time. So maybe one day?)
***
“You gonna hide in the dark forever?” Yusuke asked, stepping out onto the balcony, his brow raised as he watched Rando, who had been about to jump from said balcony.
Rando stared at Yusuke disdainfully, his nose wrinkling with distaste.
“Of course, you were a demon.”
Yusuke rolled his eyes, “Yeah, yeah, I know Koenma went over it all with you in his office. Don't act so surprised. Look man, I’m your sponsor now, and I’m looking after you. You can’t ditch. Now get in there and mingle with the other demons. I hear you got some family in there waiting to see you again.”
Rando visibly shriveled, clutching the balcony as he snarled, “No. I dishonored them! I dishonored them-”
“You did not! Enma brainwashed you into being a fucking asshole and abusing your powers,” Yusuke said firmly, his eyes narrowed in on Rando’s back.
“I turned away from my family,” Rando snapped.
“Enma was the one who made you do that. He made you into something you’re not and then unleashed you on the human world because he wanted humans and demons to constantly remain in fear of one another. You served some time, but you should hold your head up. You’re a victim just as much as any of the people you hurt and killed.”
Rando shriveled, as if Yusuke's words were a lash upon his back. He leaned forward, as if he would run, but stayed put. He howled his frustrations, “Dammit! Dammit! I don't want to do this!”
Yusuke sighed, “Look, I know it’s hard. But get out there. Your family wants to see you. We’ll take it one day at a time.”
Rando took a hard breath and released the balcony. He turned back towards the waiting room, the light framing Yusuke and blocking out his face. Rando stared into the darkness of Yusuke’s face and he said, “I wanted to kill some of those people I did kill. I wasn't entirely innocent.”
“Yeah, I know.”
“Some of those humans I killed, I wanted to do it!”
“I know.”
“...Why forgive me?”
Yusuke stepped closer to Rando, his face understanding in a way Rando wasn’t prepared to see. “Because the first thing you did after you were broken out of Enma’s control was cry as you remembered what you did. And you apologized to Kuwabara as soon as you saw the guy.”
Yusuke poked Rando in the chest, “There’s a nice guy under all that shit. You were just handed a bad lot. But that’s over now. You’re starting over. And I’m not letting you puss out about it.”
And then Yusuke stepped behind Rando and pushed him into the light of the warm room waiting to welcome him back.

Ok so now that Hunter x Hunter has started to pick back up and Togashi has gotten back to ripping our hearts out and shooting us down like dogs while telling us to read his manga (which we will), I wanted to talk about the significant number of parallels between aspects of Yu Yu Hakusho and parts of Hunter x Hunter that show how much Togashi laid the groundwork for HXH in YYH. As well as how he improved and revised many aspects of his previous work.
Originally, I was going to make this one whole post, but because of how much I wrote in this one, I figured I would just make it multiple parts.
Spoilers for HXH and YYH
Part 1: The Power Systems and their similarities/differences, and how Togashi demonstrates Limits
Nen and Spirit Energy are both very similar in multiple ways. For example, both have very similar sources, with Spirit Energy being something all humans have, and Nen being something all beings have.
Now then, what I want to talk about is the differences between them first.
Spirit Energy is something everyone can use, but unlike Nen, signature techniques are just that, techniques. For example, let's take a look at one of the best examples of this and wasted potential: Rando
Tumblr media
Rando is a demon whose whole thing is that he steals techniques, but not like Chrollo(Trust me, we will get into Chrollo), but in that he just learns them. To put it in a way that makes sense, Spirit Energy is malleable, anyone who has Spirit Energy (or Demon Energy) can replicate and learn other techniques with the only setback being that you would run the risk of not mastering them and not knowing how to use them all efficiently like Rando did.
Unlike another character who is a master with Spirit Energy without overextending themselves: Genkai
Tumblr media
Despite knowing nowhere near as many techniques as Rando, Genkai is a much better fighter than him, able to use her techniques in nearly every situation in ways that allow her to fight on a level that is nearly unbeatable, or at least was before she gave away the majority of her power to Yusuke, but even then she was able to go toe-to-toe with Shishiwakamaru, a demon who had the ability to summon hundreds of dead souls to attack indiscriminately.
Genkai is a master of Spirit Energy, even if she doesn't have as much power as the rest of the main characters.
Meanwhile let's take a look at a Nen User from Hunter x Hunter, a character you may or may not know (/j): Hisoka
Tumblr media
Now setting aside Hisoka's.... """tendencies""", when it comes to his proficiency in Nen, he's one of the best in the series, with his Nen Type being Transmutation, which would make his nen chart look something like this
Tumblr media
Now then, his Main Nen Ability is known as Bungee Gum, which contains the properties of Rubber and Gum, which is known. He Transmutes his Aura into an elastic and stretchy material which he can stick onto anything, and can do multiple things such as catch objects, immobilize opponents, or create flail-like weapons to swing around with. That is Hisoka's Hatsu, his personal expression of Nen. That is his main weapon until the day he dies, and cannot be changed as far as we know.
But that doesn't mean he can't do things that aren't too far from Transmutation, such as Conjuration, which he exemplifies with Texture Surprise, a technique which allows him to create images and textures on top of flat surfaces, such as paper, and can change its appearance. He uses this technique in creating fake tattoos or even fake skin all over his body to make himself look normal, when really he looks like this
Tumblr media
So needless to say, Hisoka is an extremely adept Nen user. But the fact is, like everyone else, he has to stay in his lane, or else he'll end up like another Nen User in the series: Kastro
Tumblr media
Kastro is an Enhancer, he was born one, which means that his potential is limited to that of an Enhancer's, which looks like this
Tumblr media
According to an extremely talented Nen Teacher: Wing, Kastro could have been a master of a technique that most Enhancers can use, the Tiger Bite Fist, which may have helped him achieve his goal... But instead of developing his Hatsu and enhancement abilities he chose to use a technique that was completely incompatible with his own: The Double Technique.
The Double Technique is fairly self-explanatory, you make a double of yourself out of Nen, and manipulate its actions into fighting alongside you. It's an amazing technique, but the fact of the matter is that for a majority of Nen Users, it's one that is either lopsided, or just more trouble than it's worth, because it is a combination of Manipulation and Conjuration. The only type of Nen User that it would work perfectly for is a Specialist, which are one in a million in the world of Hunter x Hunter, and even then it requires an extremely high amount of focus due to the amount of precision the management of an entire second body requires, because it is not an automated body, or a clone of your mind, you have to use Manipulation Nen in order to make it do anything, and that is why Kastro was doomed when he tried to make it work.
Because of his status as an Enhancer, while Kastro technically has an equal amount of proficiency in Conjuration and Manipulation Nen, he is restricted to mainly lower-level techniques, or he has to use every bit of his Nen if he wants to even touch higher level techniques of those types, which is what he does with the Double Technique, and because of it, he dies.
In both series, Togashi demonstrated the consequences of overreaching when it comes to the amount you can do, and the consequences of trying to do more than what you can handle, but he demonstrated it in Hunter x Hunter in a much more detailed way than Yu Yu Hakusho, not to discredit Yu Yu Hakusho, as it also does a swell job of it. But yeah, that's all I wanted to say about the power system for now.
For Part 2, I'll be discussing the differences between the dynamics of the Main 4 in each show, With Yu Yu Hakusho having Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Hiei, and Hunter x Hunter having Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio

Hiei and Kurama enter Genkai's tournament in Yusuke and Kuwabara's place. It's gonna be a slaughter
Round 1: Hiei vs. Baldok. So I'm uncertain if Hiei knows the Darkness Flame or even the Mortal Flame at this point. His gremlin form was used entirely for amplification, so I'm going to say he learned it after losing to Yusuke and then continued after Seiryu. Either way, Baldok is stomped and Hiei reaches the tree first
Round 2: Kurama vs. Musashi in the dark. Musashi can both see in the dark and hide his spirit energy. Yoko Kurama can definitely see in darkness, but Shuichi has trash human eyes. Regardless, his rose whip is way more deadly than Musashi's kendo stick, which just bounced pointlessly off Kuwabara's skull.
Kurama's a weirdo tho so he's letting himself get smacked real good first. This let's him feel Musashi's wooden sword all over his face and body. He takes that shit from Musashi effortlessly and now has a magic nature sword/used the wood to somehow merc Musashi
Round 3: Hiei vs. Kibano in the dark. Kibano can see in the dark and is Kibano. Hiei can see in the dark and is Hiei. Kibano was bodied by a blind Yusuke, who could only defeat Hiei by chance. Chinpo didn't die so brutally to Rando
Round 4: Hiei vs. Kazemaru, who had more potential than Yusuke and outclassed him in every way, including having an energy cannon similar to Yusuke's shotgun that was also stronger than Yusuke's spirit gun. He also has explosive shuriken that follows their target forever. Hiei can definitely fool the shuriken into hitting Kazemaru, but can he close the distance before he gets shotgunned? Kazemaru IS proven dumb enough to get exploded by his own shuriken, while Hiei went down hard from one shot of Yusuke's spirit gun.
If Kazemaru lands one energy cannon, he wins. He loses if he misses and gets bisected by Hiei or gets killed by his own shuriken. I'd say the shuriken do drain Hiei's stamina, so a battle of attrition favors neither. Hiei, to his detriment here, is probably too skilled to fall into any holes
Round 5: Kurama vs. Rando. Does Rando know what Kurama is? Kurama is smart enough to not underestimate Shorin, so Shorin's chants are out, but he was surprised by Onji/Suzuki, so he doesn't know Shorin is in disguise. When revealed tho, he's probably totally heard of Rando and vice versa
If Rando thinks Kurama is a human, his arrogant ass is going to give Kurama a million chances to rosewhip him, which is probably what would happen. If he knows or if Kurama's nature magic is a big enough tip off tho, Kurama. fucking. dies.
Rando lost entirely to dumb luck and arrogance and wouldn't dawdle if he thought Yoko Kurama was bearing down on him. Hiei similarly fails against a Rando going ham

STOP SHARING THIS TWEET.
This is 99.99% likely to be fake. As someone who works in the anime industry, let me tell you why.
Tumblr media
This has been sent to me dozens of times over the past few days, and it's pretty obvious to me that it's fake.
I work in the anime industry. Here's why I don't put any stock in this "official" announcement at all.
1. THE 'SOURCE' IS A TOTAL RANDO
The source is a random Twitter/X account. It isn't a studio or licensor. It's not even one of the "reputable" leakers. It's just some random person making a claim with zero backing and slapping the words "official" and "confirmed" on it.
Accurate leaks have happened, but they're usually accompanied by some kind of source claim (a leaked press release, a leak within the company, etc.) and a claim that an announcement is coming soon. This has nothing. This is just a random person saying shit for clicks.
Every one of their posts has "FOLLOW FORE MORE" in a subtweet. They're just farming for followers. The rest of the account is just random anime edits and posts + promotions for a discord they run.
I could literally write anything in a tweet and slap "OFFICIAL, CONFIRMED" on it, but if you see those words, you need to be asking, "Who confirmed it? What makes this official?" And in this case, it's NOTHING and NOBODY in the world of anime.
Media literacy, folks. It applies to Twitter/X. It ESPECIALLY applies to Twitter/X.
2. THIS 'SOURCE' DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THE ANIME INDUSTRY
"Studio has not been announced" is a WILD thing to suggest here, because YYH's rights are LITERALLY OWNED BY AN ANIME STUDIO. Studio Pierrot is still a license-holder for this IP, and it would be weird as hell for them to not handle a remake.
(Also, "studio not announced"... NOTHING has been announced. The wording here is very sneaky, as it implies an announcement was made but the studio was just left out of it. If an announcement had been made, it would be Pierrot/the studio/Shueisha doing it.)
Not only has Pierrot made animated content for the series as recently as the 2018 OVAs, their copyright info is on literally every piece of YYH merch being produced this year (alongside Shueisha and Togashi). They still have some rights. They (in part) hold the IP. They still make art for it. They will be the studio for any remake unless they willingly let go of that license. Considering they're still making money off of it through merch sales and the liveaction adaptation (tho that's another can of licensing worms we could discuss), that's highly, HIGHLY unlikely.
The likelihood of Pierrot letting some other studio handle the remake is very, VERY slim. It's one of their hallmark, legendary series. Why would they ever let that go to a competitor?
The "studio hasn't been confirmed" bit tells me this person doesn't know who actually owns the rights to YYH, and when they don't even know that basic piece of information, it puts everything else they say into question.
3. THE TIMING IS SUSPICIOUS
Anime series are in production long before they air. How long in advance depends on the project. You can't keep a lid on a high profile project for an extended period. For big projects, studios want to start the hype train sooner rather than later. (Obviously there are exceptions to this (see the Fruits Basket remake) but we'll get to that later.)
This tweet claims the project is coming out in 2024. We are at the VERY TAIL END of 2023. It is basically 2024 already. That tweet isn't an official announcement (despite the word "official" on it), which means the studio/license holder would have to announce it even LATER than this tweet did. The latest anime seasonals begin airing in Q4/October/the Fall Simulcast season. That gives Pierrot less than a year of lead-up time to market the anime before its latest possible air date in 2024, and for this particular property, that does not seem realistic OR wise.
Let's examine Pierrot's recent treatment of the latest Bleach installment as evidence. They announced the project in March 2020 via a livestream event. They began airing the project in October 2022, MORE THAN TWO YEARS LATER. That gave them two years to market the series.
YYH, like Bleach, is one of Pierrot's hallmarks. The idea that they'd give it less than a year of marketing is just not realistic. They'd likely give it the same kind of treatment as the new Bleach arc, given it's one of their past tentpole titles getting revived.
(Also note that Pierrot animated the new Bleach installments after years of no new Bleach. They didn't let go of those rights. They held on and made more content later. Now apply that logic to YYH, and arrive again at: To suggest another studio would handle a new series is farfetched.)
If the tweet had said the series was dropping in 2025 or later, it would be much more believable. But the details they gave, again, discredit their claims from the jump.
If a new YYH was coming out in 2024, btw, the series would already be well underway and likely have been in production behind the scenes for quite some time. They probably would've announced it last year if they intended a 2024 release.
4. THE LIVEACTION OF IT ALL
A liveaction adaptation for YYH is about to drop (December 14 on Netflix).
I can already hear the argument of, "Oh, well maybe they'll announce a new anime for 2024 when the liveaction comes out," and while that might be a possibility, I think there's another, far more likely alternative.
If the liveaction does well and the license holders make a fuckton of money on it, or if they at least see a large resurgence in interest in the IP, THEN I think the license holders/anime production committee would start thinking about a new anime adaptation to cash in on that interest. But I do not see them making that decision before the streaming numbers for the liveaction come in, and I do NOT see them working on the anime before the liveaction has even aired.
The anime world moves slowly. The execs and committees behind the scenes like numbers and sales figures. If they see good numbers, balls might start rolling. But it's unlikely they're already in production NOW, let alone far enough into production to support a 2024 release for a remake.
If the Netflix show gets the ball rolling on a new YYH anime, that anime won't come out in 2024. There just isn't time.
And I can now hear some muttering the argument of, "Oh, well they probably just held the news to time it with the liveaction," but see again their habit of announcing projects with lots of lead-up marketing time.
CONCLUSION: THIS SEEMS FAKE.
BUT...
Given the details above and the COMPLETE LACK OF EVIDENCE supplied by the tweet, I do not expect we'll get an ACTUAL "official, confirmed" announcement for a remake anytime soon.
In the event that I'm wrong, what I'd predict is the announcement of a remake (one made by ACTUAL official sources, AKA Pierrot and Shuiesha) sometime in Q1 or Q2 2024. Pierrot would be the studio, and the project would be slated for late 2025, or even more likely, sometime in 2026. (And yes, projects slated for 2026 and later are in the works right now.)
I think the above is a longshot, but it's possible. The timing suggested in the tweet everyone is sharing isn't realistic at all, however.
Long story short:
DO NOT TRUST RANDOM TWITTER ACCOUNTS.
ANYONE CAN SAY "OFFICIAL" or "CONFIRMED"
THE ONLY OFFICIAL SOURCES FOR ANIME NEWS ARE STUDIOS AND LICENSORS
QUESTION EVERYTHING

ok so yeah the yyh live action was clearly done with love. i can see it. any yyh fan can see it BUT if you wanted to introduce new people to this series...do not start with the live action. they, most likely, will not give a damn about the characters.
it's because its too FAST. you barely have a moment to breathe and you, as a viewer, are finding out another threat, another battle.
the team tried to adapt many chapters at once and its respectfully done but its just a MESS. it feels like a mess and looks like one. like a room full of clothes and you dont know where to start cleaning.
the entire spirit detective arc was kind of half assed?? like where tf is rando? suzaku? in fact a part of hiei's development with the urameshi team happens in the Four Saint Beasts episodes.
i dont think it was a good idea to skip these arcs but aight.
(yusuke gradually got under hiei's skin. it was really hard for him lol. but i did love their moments cuz it shows us that yusuke is much more emotionally intelligent than it seems. hiei was ready to throw it all out for yusuke and frankly he would not do that for kurama)

Concept for a canon-complicant yyh fanfic, and some character analysis of Yusuke and Kuwabara in Genkai's tournament:
Genkai, at the end of the preliminary eliminations of her tournament for a disciple, having one round that doesn't consist of strength or logic, asking the contestants,
"Why are you here?"
The concept came to mind and then I found it compelling. Giving the contestants an explicit opportunity to describe their circumstances of why they have come here, after they've already succeeded in a number of trials before the actual matches. Some having been so focused on making through this that they're stumped by the question, regardless if they have their life story ready or not. Some refusing outright to describe a story, and instead leave a statement. Others are ready, perhaps thinking that this is another test and so they must have the most compelling story to tell for why they deserve learning from this great master before she dies.
It's a compelling concept to me because 1) it gives opportunity to give easy dimension to background characters and give more crunch and texture as foils to our main characters of this section, and 2) it's fun to make emotionally constipated Yusuke who is only here for a bribe, and easily-embarrassed Kuwabara who just came here for advice and for some reason* didn't leave when the lady is obviously busy and he's not interested in the position. Also gives these characters opportunity to hear and react to what they're hearing! If they admire the stories they hear or what is left unsaid by another, or if they dislike them for that! Yusuke and Kuwabara also know each other before-hand and it's fun for me to force them to air out their thoughts or feelings.
It would be funny too, if after some stories about tragedy and some of glory, to get to Kuwabara, who is a little impressionable (he is moe that way), and perhaps gets very self-conscious about the fact that he came here by happenstance and then just didn't leave.
* it's tempting to say it's Yusuke... but no, he came here on Shizuru's suggestion, and despite his lack of saying so, it appears that in the manga he makes a gesture of "well I guess while I'm here...". There's of course the social aspect too, of having arrived at a big gathering and then being the only person who leaves. What if someone sees him?? Urameshi's there too!!
Option 1) He omits what he thinks is embarrassing to say and lies a little. Option 2) He tells the truth: his senses are getting distracting and his sleep paralysis is getting worse, and he wants to seek a professional about this. It was his sister who told him to seek Genkai, but he didn't know there was a tournament.
I think Option 1 would leave Genkai knowing he's lying or omitting something, and it's up to the writer if this is significant to her or not. I personally think it's very in-character of her if the question is just for her to get a feel for the people present and there isn't a right-or-wrong answer to her question: even a lie is acceptable.
Option 2 would leave her more impressed maybe. It takes guts to admit you did something to go with the flow or because you didn't know how to leave gracefully. Kuwa looks surprised when he got the red lot, he might have expected he could have gained an easy exit if it was white. So, he's baffled when it was red. And then it was games, an area he's very comfortable with, and likely got caught in the groove. Which is also a little embarrassing to admit! "I forgot I could leave," haha! But it could also lead up to Genkai outright asking him, "Do you want to leave?" and Kuwabara would be put on the spot again if so. Depends again on the writer if she asks him and he does intend to leave, or if she doesn't ask him and he's once again kinda "forced" to go w the flow, or if she asks him, he says yes he wants to leave, and then she tells him "Too bad, it's too late now!" either for the kick of it or bc she knows too that Rando is somewhere in this crowd.
When I imagine the order of Kuwabara or Yusuke first in regards to when that question is directed at them, I end up starting with Kuwabara bc Yusuke is the protagonist and it's ultimately him who ends up as Genkai's disciple: it feels like good tradition to build up to his answer. That and, while being a kuwameshi stan, building up to Kuwabara feels too "wifebeamy" to me. Too much potential for "woah kuwa is so inherently good he should have some cookies for that" when this is too early for that. Or, it doesn't feel like the right time for me for such a moment. Too easy a moment for me, might be to someone else's tastes though?
Next is Yusuke, who came because of his job but primarily because of a bribe! He does not expect to get chosen, he was really hoping he'd get eliminated early, he doesn't want to get chosen, he's also uninterested in the serial murdering demon Rando! Though, when his watch broke, it probably made reality kick into gear for Yusuke, to realise that yup, that serial killer is right here on these grounds. Makes it a little harder to leave now that he's got confirmation.
He definitely doesn't have a story ready. When Kuwabara asked him why he's here, Yusuke responded by evading the question: "I've got good reasons, unlike some people." (anime, eng dub) - or turning it back around on Kuwabara: "What are you doing here?" (manga, viz eng translation)/"You tell me why you've come here!" (anime, eng netfx sub) / "Right back at you, what did you come here for?" (my own rough translation of the Japanese dub) / "そういう おめえこそ 何しに来たんだよ" (Japanese dub and sub, might have an error on my part!)
Options: 1) lie. 2) tell the truth.
Interesting how in the English dub, Kuwabara comes across as giving up his reason for being here to Yusuke without prompting. Yusuke dismissed him just a moment earlier by implying he didn't have a good reason, "I have good reason, unlike some people" before he even got to hear it! It was not an invitation to chit-chat. Kuwabara next comes across as too-surprised-to-be-defensive-so-he-just-explains-himself. "You think I don't?" In the manga and the Japanese dub especially though, he comes across to me as surprised that Yusuke asked him about him at all. "Why are you here, why did you come?" "M-me...? Well, the truth is..." Very funny to note here is Yusuke's face as Kuwabara describes his predicament. With the English dub, it came across to me as "Of course his powers grew," like he's exasperated with having had a direct hand in Kuwabara's spirit senses developing more (but also in general having an effect on the world by participating in it however directly or indirectly and being annoyed he affected something he didn't mean for). In Japanese, it read to me as "Oh yeah that's my bad..." Kuwabara notes that this spirit sensing is affecting his fighting in the English dub, and in Japanese it affects him being unable to move (referring to sleep paralysis? I've heard some things abt Viz translation not being the best but it's what I have). And it makes sense then why I read Yusuke's reaction a little differently then? Because one interpretaiton of Kuwabara was about his fighting, the delinquency, the fun and mutual violence for the sake of fun and for some self-fulfillment in oneself and with one's fellow friends. The other is directly about his own health, physical and mental. "Of course that happened to you," "Oh yeah that's my bad..."
Yusuke might mind or might not mind just coming out and saying he's not interested in winning. He does have a small interest in this though, because before the watch-compass exploded, Rando the serial killer was kind of a far-off concept. After the explosion, it feels a lot more real, perhaps. He becomes more invested in looking at his fellow contestants, even sizing up Kuwabara to decide if this Kuwabara is real or if he's always been a demon but in hiding.
In the manga he's impressed enough by Genkai roaring at two men (from Kyuushu mind you, hello 90s-that-still-prevails-today rascism and classicism) that he reconsiders wanting to win for the sake of getting stronger. "Skills powerful enough to strike fear into the hearts of demons! Those would be worth having! Guess I'll stick around after all... and win this competition!"
In the anime, in Japanese, it comes across more like he understood now why yokai would be after Genkai and her powers. Espcially because prior to this he was very exasperated with Genkai being an old woman. And then he goes, "Right! I still have to figure out if Rando is in this group", and bing bong the watch breaks.
Lie or tell the truth? Saying out loud that there's a demon present would be very foolish. He could lie, and same instance as when I babbled on about Kuwabara potantially lying, Genkai would know he's lying or not telling the whole truth.
For some reason my gut is telling me she would not accept a lie like, "I came here because I genuinely wanted to" from Yusuke as much as from Kuwabara! I like to think that she senses something familiar about him that reminds her of herself, which makes her less forgiving of him lying or being hesitant about his true motives in front of her. "I know what you fucking are, don't try me," kind of reaction? (I refuse Genkai seeing any similarity to Toguro within Yusuke.) I also like it a little bit that Genkai relates to Yusuke even before the discipleship begins.
Many dislike the parts of yyh where Yusuke wins by accident or luck. I like this abt yyh actually! It feels very in theme and points to more tragic aspects, that it was indeed luck that prevented him from dying. It invites more reflection, sadly many end up at "it doesn't feel earned" and stop examining things at that point. Yusuke can be clever and strong, but he's also very lucky. It's especially prevalent in the marsh section of the latter part of the tournament. All the more reason, I think, for Yusuke to give some kind of answer that makes Genkai react or go "that one!! ... if this wasn't a tournament based on skill I would consider that one strongly."
It would truly put Yusuke on the spot! Probably very similar feeling to Takenaka at best, Iwamoto at worst, but more unsettling because this spirit energy martial arts master is a stranger to him. Maybe he feels it's unfair! Maybe others in the tournament are also baffled.
Could this paint a mark on Yusuke's back? If Genkai kept that in mind, would she still ask that, or would it be reflexive of her to make Yusuke speak a truth? Depends on the writer.
And then Genkai reveals that no one was eliminated in this "test", she just wanted to know them a little. Though this might not be in-character for her as the individual character, I prefer doing that in favour of strengthening whatever themes or motifs I might notice.

not my love of yu yu hakusho being summoned back from the DEAD by netflix with their live action version.
am i excited? eh, i don’t really trust netflix with anime adaptations into live action. will i see how it goes? yes
so far, i’m vibing with the casting choice for yusuke? if hiei isn’t smaller than a 14 year old girl i will riot. and if they give him some stupid bullshit story about why he’s edgy and dark and brooding i will riot let the manlet be evil for the sake of being evil and sulk because some rando 14 year old kicked his shit in
and if they fuck up kurama’s story ima be so fucking furious kurama’s entire reasoning for joining the team is so out of left field and so him and if they change that i will drive to the studio myself i swear to FUCK
and if they fuck up kuwabara im gonna THROW HANDS!!!!!! THROW H A N D S!!!!
keep yyh in the time period that it was made in, too!!!! it makes a difference!!!!
yyh is such a staple anime its so good its kitchy yes but fuck if it hasn’t held up for so long.
anyway if you’re here and you love anime pls give yu yu hakusho a try its worth it i promise its a shonen but its silly and heartwarming and lovely i promise its good.

mannnn ok i've been waiting for the yyh fixation cycle to put me back on (!!!!!!!) rather than (thing i am so normal about but it's dormant) and it's taken a little longer than i expected and i was worried it was going away but i am happy to announce that WE ARE SO BACK BABYYY
#like giggling in The most girly lovestruck unbecoming way at eeevery line outta Anyone's mouth it's soooo sickening#god i love this show. oh my god it's so. jdgdhsmbssjjdhdkvbjbvvdn#im such a sucker for the four saint beasts arc. did you know that? it's so good to me#love to see my boys together at last#and the rando arc is always better than i think until it gets to the rando fight and then it kinda blows#x2 speed privileges unlocked by having seen this pt of the show like 7 times#same with the suzaku fight. you slow down when it cuts to botan/keiko or kurama/hiei/kuwabara but the rest is x2. begone with ye#and it's soooo fucking funny and the voice acting mmmmwah i keep replaying lines and giggling bc like the choices are so scrunchy#starting to think i might just have a thing for voices or something#sighing longingly as we speak#i think yyh is my comfort show if i had to pick one it's just so..... <33#ptutu is probably up there as well but it's a very different vibe and has its place on the fixation track#yyh is the show i want to pick me up and spin me around in a flowery meadow. if that makes sense#like it's not just that i love it it's that im in love with it. i guess? idk why. kinda besotted atm though#a bit worried bc the transition from yukina to dark tournament is always a little bumpy for me and it's where im most likely to drop off#historically speaking. i think it's the shift in pacing? going from 3-5 ep arcs to a 40 ep arc is like. whoof#(thats part of why i prefer chapter black to dark tournament tbh <3 BUT i love dark tourny i get it believe me)#but i think this round's pretty secure bc the spell this shit has me under. wheewwwww#nyarla dni#just realized that i mightve kept snappy kuwabara as my banner for so long not just bc it's fun and cute#but also as a way of holding on to yyh as part of my online presence and identity. like the yyh pt of my heart saying im still here!! :D#esp after i changed my pfp from hiei. snappy kuwabara + yukina was my last holdout OMG MY DOG'S HOWLING#SHE NEVER DOES THAT HOLD ON
