Does "136649" represent a lifespan?

Seeing random posts on my dash today (now yesterday) about Japanese authors using the pronunciation of numbers to be a joke or to hold hidden meanings.

Friendly reminder that there is a lot of that in the Black Butler series, including the extra artwork Yana-san has produced over the years.

One possible example can be found in Undertaker's registration number: 136649. It's been discussed before, but people mostly dropped the subject after realizing it's not easy to interpret as a pun. And I started to think he was the 49th reaper registered in 1366. Could still be true, since that would be 500 years before Cloudia/Claudia dies, it would make him a very old reaper, and shi and ku (4 and 9) sounds like "death and agony".

But I've decided to go back to the numbers. And the sounds for them.

That's ichi-san-roku-roku-shi-ku. And I chose shi and ku specifically because of how they sound. (Though kyuu/kyu was surprisingly interesting.) Setting kanji aside, the way these words sound, they can be given different interpretations. Kind of like Sebastian's pun about being simply one hell of a butler.

Ichi means "one", but going purely by sound, it can also be interpreted as: best, first, or beginning. X

San means "three", but going purely by sound, it can also be interpreted as... yeah, idk 🤷🏻‍♀️, other than an honorific for Mr/Mrs/Miss... but I'll come back to this in a moment....

Roku means "six", but going purely by sound, it can also be interpreted as: stipend, reward, worthy, toil/hardship, and the aging body/suffering of old age. X

Shi means "four", but some people prefer to say yon, because shi also sounds like "death".

Similarly, ku sounds like the word for "agony", so some people prefer to say kyuu. But Kyuu/kyu can mean things like coffin or casket. X

That gives an incomplete picture of: beginning, an honorific or 3, rewards and hardship, then death and burial. Then I recalled that the pun Sebastian likes to use has multiple meanings, depending on how you group the sounds.

So, let's regroup it as: ichi-sanro-kuro-ku-shi-kyuu

We still have ichi meaning beginning or start, but we could also say birth.

Then we have sanro, a Buddhist concept about what feeds mortality and transmigration: desire, existence, and ignorance. X. Might be synonymous with the Buddhist concept of dukka. Never being satisfied with what you have, basically. Hardship, pain, disappointment, and regret. An inability to escape from it all, too... as long as you live... or remain in the birth-life-death cycle, which is referenced by transmigration.

Then kuro, which is often used to mean "black", just like in Kuroshitsuji. But it can also sound like the words for hardship, toil, anxiety/worries, and fatigue. It's very similar to the meanings given above for roku. X

Then ku for agony...

Then shi for death...

And kyuu (instead of ku) for the coffin or casket for burial, for the grave.

Now, we have a complete picture from cradle to grave, with a decidedly pessimistic viewpoint. You are born, life is hard and full of disappointment and pain, you suffer and get worn down (injury, illness, and old age), then you die in agony and get buried.

His registration number might have meant something special to him because it represented existential crisis, based purely on how it sounds. And something starts a human life, but he ends it. Othello might have given us a slight clue by calling 136649 the epitome of a reaper. Perhaps he saw himself as someone who provided relief by ending all those burdensome lives.

It would also be a slight nod to the three fates, who weave/spin, measure, and cut the thread of each life... where 136649 performs the role of Atropos.

Think I might be onto something here??

this has been on my mind ever since i read the post about how ichi & kiru met — when does ichimatsu find out kiru is related to yanagida, like what was his reaction?

OHH this is a good one. and luckily its been on my mind as well so i Do have an answer for you! since kiru is generally quite private about her family affairs, i dont think he'd find out for a little while, like a few months into their friendship at the absolute least. he would definitely be pretty shocked at first, and maybe even feel a little [unfairly] betrayed in some way? but i dont think kiru and yanagida would really be in contact when he finds out, so with the knowledge that the two dont even Speak in mind, i think hes able to get over those initial feelings pretty quickly. at most it would cause a rift between them for like. a week. but both of them would get pretty lonely and just try to figure it out by that point LMFAO

after a little bit i think he would probably tell kiru he doesnt really wanna hear about yanagida; i cant imagine he would really be equipped to go into Why exactly, but i think in true ichimatsu fashion he would say some really ominous shit about there being a dark past there and kirus just like 👍 cheers bro ill drink to that. because i feel like the experience of being friends with someone but having weird beef with one of their relatives is somewhat universal

later on however, when she Does get back in touch with yanagida, ichi is actually aware of kiru's tenure on Mayumi Nikuya's Wild Ride and that her + yana have a pretty unique relationship because of that. so i think that would soften his resolve a bit, probably not in a full on reconnection with yanagida because i mean. this is ichi we're talking about. but he would be a bit more willing to share the same Space as him and such. at first he'd say its just for kirus sake [not quite as nicely. "ill put up with him but only because you're making me do this" is probably closer to what he'd say] but over time. well! who's to say

Strawberry Jubilee is 15th Anniversary

What was the significance of strawberry 🍓 to the latest manga issue? Was it strawberry sauce on Finnian’s hands? It turned out to be blood as the Phantomhive household fought the young earl’s enemies on Chapter 180. I realised later that it means 15. Yana Toboso’s “Artworks 1” carries the image above left and the mangaka illustrated it for GFantasy’s 15th anniversary in April 2008. “Strawberry means ichigo in Japanese, hence 1 (ichi) and 5 (go).” From the German translation of the original Japanese:

“Da es aus vielen Elementen besteht, habe ich einen simpleren Zeichenstil (Anime) gewählt.”

(Since it has consisted of many elements, I have chosen a simpler drawing style {anime}.)

I was browsing the YanaIchi tag on Pixiv and I learned a few things!

The ship name for YanaIchi is written as 柳イチ,  柳 comes from  柳田 (Yanagida) while イチ comes from the katakana writing of Ichi. This isn’t as noticeable for international viewers since we use different subs but every time the “Ichi” nickname is used in the movie they are specifically using イチ instead of  一.

柳一 is also an acceptable name for the ship,  一 coming from the actual spelling of Ichimatsu’s name,  一松. Although it is used far less because the kanji for one  一 is very similar to a vowel extender in katakana, ー .

Ichi is obviously purple but orange and brown are often associated with Yanagida! Although not a lot of people use it, understandable since these colors are heavily associated with other characters (Chibita uses both, Homura uses brown and ESP Cat use orange).

871 is also a term that gets used a lot in reference to YanaIchi! 1 obviously comes from  一 (ichi), but where did 87 come from? Well if you take the first character of Yanagida’s name, Yana (柳), you’ll find that its syllables sounds phonetically similar to the native Japanese reading of numbers 8, ( やっつ, yattsu) and 7, ( ななつ, nanatsu)! Thus Ya (8) Na (7) Ichi (1).

Now, there isn’t a set date on when exactly YanaIchi day is. Some say it’s 7/1, others use 8/1, 8/7 (at 1:pm, although this is also the same day as Yanagida day), 8/8 (8/7+1, for ichi), 8/17 and 10/10.

OMG I was listening to this shit once again and I couldn't stop thinking abt the theory of the Osomatsu movie in which Ichimatsu was in love with Yanagida but he was using Ichi and broke his heart...

Actually I think Ichi loved Yanagida and that's why he became so distant to his brothers (apart of the sextuplets confusion) AND THEN IN THIRD YEAR HE HEARD YANA TALKING ABT THEM and that broke his heart, but couldn't take distance because their brothers and him never had a conversation

So Ichi kept acting normally with Yana to have someone to be with, but that effort turned into someone who is really aware of people, and that's why hE CANT TRUST ANYONE EXCEPT OF HIS BROTHERS AND CATS

I am absolutely still into YanaIchi! Yes, the fire may have burned out a little due to a lack of new content and because Magi Lunatic Icchi has been holding her wand against my throat for the past month, but I still love Ichi and his high school friend and wish them the most happiness. (And a cameo from Yanagida in S3. Please let them see each other again and not completely hate each other)

Anyway! I do believe I’ve read most of what’s in the category - I check it every few days because I am still forever starving. Which fic did you mean? I have good stuff to say about the newest three! (Haven’t read any of the chaptered fics with a bunch of tags yet. I should, though.)

I love the conversations between Ichi and Totty in the present day, and the contrast (and also similarities) between Ichi’s younger self and present self. I really felt that Yana cared about him even if he did feel distant from the group as a whole. But oh, that ending... so sudden, and yet so unexpected... I do like a bit of bittersweetness with my YanaIchi. Is it so bad to ship something where the characters never get together half the time and one simply pines mercilessly?

Their Own Reunion by magneton - More good characterization, and proof of the interest in “two characters talking” fics are capable of having. I really liked Yanagida’s characterization here - even if he did poorly by Ichi in high school, in the end, he was just a stupid kid, they both were... and then there’s that ambiguous ending that honestly may not result in anything. We just can’t let these two have things.

Ppl on twitter would get pissed at me for this but I don't like the Yana/Ichi ship lol I KNOW ppl are desperate for someone to ship Ichi with and it's not like.. morally wrong or anything but wasn't Yanagida kind of .. a jerk? Yanagida is a character from Osomatsu san the movie who is shown as one of 18!Ichimatsu’s friends, and one of the sextuplet’s classmates. Personally I don’t know much about him (because the movie isn’t released in America yet), but he’s the guy that’s known to high five Ichimatsu in the trailer
