Today is important. For a multitude of reasons.

Now that they were engaged, soon to be officially married, Wilford felt twice as much obligation to make Valentine's special. Flowers and chocolates wouldn't pass. Those were still lovely, but today, it had to be bigger. He needed to truly show Yancy how much he loved him.

Though he had to admit, when you give someone everything... they become much harder to gift for. But he still had a plan.

He'd dragged him to the middle of a field, a blindfold over his eyes to ensure that he couldn't see.

"My love, you can open your eyes."

When Yancy opens them, he'll find the field is full of blue flowers. And not too far away, a cabana sits, with blue fairy lights, and a romantic candle lit dinner. Chicken carbonara of course.

"Will you be my Valentine?"

Yancy didn't think much about Valentines Day. Usually. Other than the small cards and candy that get passed out in school and at Happy Trails, he never had anyone to share the day of love with. But now, he has a fiancé, a partner he loves more than anything.

One that already gives so much.

Before Yancy could surprise Wil with his own gifts, he's being led somewhere with a blindfold on, heart hammering with anticipation. When you have a fiancé that can literally make anything happen, it's difficult to know what to expect.

And as he opens his eyes, it's perfect. Flowers in his favorite color, an intimate setting and... the meal. The first one they ever made and shared together. Yancy grins happily and pulls Wilford in by the waist, pressing his lips to his in answer. But just in case...

"O'course, baby. I'll always be yer Valentine. This is... perfect." One more kiss to seal the deal. "I love you so much."

Soft rays of sunlight bleed through the blinds, waking up the ego from his slumber. His long locks of hair splayed out on the pillow like some sort of spider. Blinking his tired brown eyes, Yancy reaches out to his side for his lover. He feels nothing.

Shooting up, Yancy's eyes wide with alarm searching for any sign of Wilford. "Bubblegum?" the free bird calls out for his unusually bright partner. He pushes the covers off of him, letting the cool breaze of the AC hit his uncovered feet.

He shifts around the bed and gets off the soft mattress. His feet felt the cold wooden floor. He slips on his slippers and shuffles out of the room. Rubbing his eyes, he pushes past the cracked open door. His unkempt hair shadows his face as he walks to the shining lights of the living room.

Sitting on the couch were Bing and Yan, both of which were playing some Uno, with Sliver Shepard, Magnum, and Ed watching. Yan was busy watching Bing struggle to find the right card to counter her, but when she noticed Yancy, she happily waved at him. "Ohayōgozaimasu Yancy-kun!" everyone looked up and greeted the free bird a good morning.

Yancy chuckles under his tired breath, walking over he ruffles Yan's hair playfully. The teenager whines at this and swats his hand. "Mornin Yan... Do you know where Wilford is?" Yan giggles like a schoolgirl, already seeing through Yancy's tiredness. She points to the kitchen, "Yep, He's making pancakes!" Yancy sighs with relief and pats Yan on the head gratefully.

"Thanks, kid" "Don't go making out on the counter again!" Bing called out, his optics still focused on his hand of cards. Yancy blushes a tad, remembering exactly what Bing was talking about.

Scoffing the free bird flipped Bing off. And with that, he went to the kitchen.

Just as he took a step inside the confines of the kitchen, the sun flashed him in the eyes. He hisses in protest and covers his eyes, of course, the blinds were pulled back.

A soft gasp rang against the checkered tiles of the kitchen, Yancy looked up, still shielding his eyes. There was Wilford, with his bright pink mustache and pretty but also frilly beige apron. His eyes were wide with what looked like a dear caught in headlights.

Yancy smiles warmly, the sunlight reflected off of his sweetheart so perfectly....

Wilford blushes at the warm smile and pouts, "Don't just stand there! Help me beat this batter!" He protests at Yancy, waving at him to come closer. Yancy chuckled and shuffled over, he wraps his arms around Wilford's waist, letting his chin propped up on the ego's shoulder. "Pancakes?" He asks with a small smirk, his eyes studying Wilford's movements. The pink ego puffed his chest out, his eyes shining with pride, "Why of course! Aaand" He pulls out a bag of candy, "Choco chips!"

Yancy's smile grew as he sighed, nuzzling Wilford and planting a kiss on his forehead. The pink ego laughs wholeheartedly, his bashful grin shining in both of their memories.

They would never forget these moments, these domestic, and soft moments... Never...

"I want one of them chocolate fountains."

It's the first thing that comes to mind when Wilford asks about what he wants at the reception. Yancy had seen them on TV and was downright mesmerized by the chocolate flowing down like a waterfall of pure happiness. And he could skewer a marshmallow or strawberry on a pointy stick to be covered in said chocolate? Sign him up!

That and karaoke, he wasn't sure what else he needed. Wilford would officially be his husband at that point... he'd have everything.

Looking at his fiancé, a fond smile slowly lifts the corners of his lips as he wraps his arms around him. "I have you, baby... what else could I possibly need?" Leaning down, he presses a gentle kiss to Wilford's lips, and it's like the first time all over again. Goosebumps down his arms, that electric tingle up his spine...

His whole world, finally within reach.

Wilford wanted to give Yancy his dream wedding. Everything he wanted, he would get. He even figured out how to make that funnel cake wedding cake he wanted. Every wish Yancy had, it would be granted, until his love thought it was perfect.

But Yancy didn't want much. A chocolate fountain, a karaoke machine, and a cake... And him.

As Wilford is pulled close to his fiance, a big, goofy smiles crosses his face. Soon, they'd be officially husbands. Just a little more time... and everything would finally be official. Kissing him, it only makes him wish that time would stop moving so slow. But, if he wanted this universe to remain in tact, he'd have to settle with waiting.

"My love, you're too sweet..." He says, before pulling Yancy back for another kiss.

Creative Careers | Three Early-Career Filmmakers on Audience-Building and Engagement

With help from Eugene Hernandez, Deputy Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center, we explore the relationship of three filmmakers to their audiences.

Films are created for audiences to experience, and audiences in turn are essential to a filmmaker’s career. With help from Eugene Hernandez, Deputy Director of The Film Society of Lincoln Center, we explored the relationship of three filmmakers to their audiences. 

In a new short video series, Flavio Alves, Eliza Hittman, and Yance Ford share unique insights around finding and interacting with audiences. They touch on topics including the use of social media, working with outreach partners, making personal appearances, and making themselves part of the distribution campaign. This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Yance Ford is director of Strong Island, winner of the “Special Jury Award for Storytelling” at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. He graduated from Hamilton College in 2004, and studied film in the Production Workshop at Third World Newsreel. He is a Sundance Institute Documentary Program Fellow, a MacDowell Colony/Fledgling Fund fellow, a Creative Capital Grantee, and he has been featured in Filmmaker Magazine's “25 New Faces of Independent Film.” Ford is a former Series Producer of POV, the PBS documentary series. Strong Island was nominated for an Academy Award in 2018 and is currently in the running for Emmy Award in documentary filmmaking. It is Ford’s first film.

Flavio Alves is a Brazilian who was granted political asylum in the United States in 1998. Shortly thereafter he attended Columbia University, where he earned a degree in Political Science. In 2007, Alves returned to school to study film production at New York University. Since then, he has directed and produced more than 20 films, including the award-winning short films, The Secret Friend (2010), and Tom in America (2014), which was named “Best Short Film” by the National Board of Review. His first feature film, The Garden Left Behind, is Fiscally Sponsored by NYFA and will premiere in the fall of 2018. It is the first film to be funded substantially though sales of donated items on eBay.

Eliza Hittman grew up in Flatbush, Brooklyn. She received a BA degree in theater and drama from Indiana University in 2001 and an MFA degree from the School of Film/Video at California Institute of the Arts in 2010. Her short film Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight (2011) premiered at Sundance. Hittman was nominated as “Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director” at the Gotham Awards and for the “John Cassavetes Award” at the Indie Spirit Awards for her first feature, It Felt Like Love (2014). Her second film, Beach Rats, won the Directing Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018. Hittman teaches at Pratt Institute.

Yancy smiled as he watched Wilford happily talking to his contestant, smiling all bright and happy as his iconic slur of words rung around the room. Yancy's heart fluttered as he turns to the camera and smiles as he pats the contestants shoulder and goes off stage for a break. That's when Yancy removes himself from leaning on the wall and towards the backstage. As he reaches there, his eyes immediately spot Wilford's loud laugh as he talks to Bim. Yancy couldn't help but let his gaze stare at Wilford with such love and passion that he didn't even realizes the tap on his shoulder. What did make him snap out of his thoughts was the voice.

"Yancy, what are you doing here backstage?" Yancy turns his attention away from Wil and turns around to see Dark, white suit and red and blue glitching aura like always. "O-Oh Dark! Didn't see youse there.." Yancy awkwardly chuckles as he buries his hands into his pockets in his leather jacket. Dark raises and eyebrow as his eyes go between the awkward ex-prisoner and Wilford, that's when he realizes.

"Ah.. Now I see why you have come here." Dark says, causing Yancy to tilt his head in an act of confusion. Knowing damn well that Dark was onto him. Dark's shoulder's slightly fell as he sighed. "Yancy.. I truly am sorry about what had happened to the both of you.. Believe me, I wish I could do something to fix this but.. You know Wilford.." Yancy's mood completely fell as the reminder washed over him. "It's okay Dark, ain't your fault and.. It wasn't his either.." Dark nodded and gently placed his hand on the others shoulder. "Why don't you have a chat with him? Maybe even restart?" Yancy thought about it for a moment. But he shook his head and Dark nodded, gently squeezing his shoulder. "I'm sorry my friend. Take care." And he walked away.

Yancy stood there with the reminder going around his head non-stop. He could feel the tears forming in his eyes. He felt so sorry for Wilford and his memory, it was never his fault that he was like this. But even if he did restart everything with Wilford, it would feel unfair.

Why must life be so unfair to him?

All the egos are hiding anywhere they can fit. Some were easy, able to magic themselves into hiding. Others weren't so lucky. Ever tried to hide an 8 foot tall pirate? It's difficult. But, like always, they managed. It was a big day, and they couldn't ruin the surprise.

It was Yancy's return home! So of course, there was a giant party planned. They missed their favorite singin' guy!

As wonderful as his trip had been, Yancy was very happy to be home so he could see everyone. Of course, one pink mustachioed man in particular was on his mind more than the others. Pulling up in his red truck, he grabs the backpack and large duffel bag he had brought with him and makes his way to the door.

His hair isn't long enough to tie into a bun anymore, but it still frames his face in brown waves. He has his glasses, dark blue frames surrounding deep brown eyes. And he's currently a little tanner than he was before, having caught plenty of sun on his trip. Walking quickly to the front of the Manor, his grin stretches from ear to ear as he slowly opens the door.

If Yancy had to rank the best days of his life, the day of the Pride parade he goes to with Wilford is up there. It's... exhilarating. Incredible. Freeing. While he never made his sexuality a secret, he's also never been this open about it before. And it didn't get more open than wearing what he is and riding on a pan pride float with the love of his life.

He's decked out in a pink shirt, blue pants, and yellow shoes. Wearing a leather biker jacket with the demisexual flag on the back, while his hair is dyed in those same colors. It was so much fun! Riding the float, hand in hand with his sweetheart, grinning happily while waving at the crowds.

It's all a fun, colorful blur and before he knows it, the day is winding down into early evening. Hugging Wilford close, he gives him a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you so much for this, baby. I had so much fun!"

Wilford made it his business to make sure that everyone was comfortable with themselves. And that included sexuality. For him, his sexuality was as simple as the sky being blue and the grass being green. He was always open and free with it, figuring there was no use in hiding who you are. And he was proud that he was able to be up here with the love of his life, able to let his colors fly.

His outfit could only be described as is Elton John and Freddie Mercury had a fashion baby. It was big, extravagant, flashy. Everything Wilford was and more. All done in pink, yellow, and blue. While yes, the network basically booted him up here, that wasn't what it felt like at all. It just felt like a big party. Full of those that just got it.

When the days wind down, and the crowds slowly start to disperse, Wilford finds himself giving Yancy a tight hug. His heart was beating out of his chest. "That's all that matters to me, my love. Seeing you smiling like that made my whole day!"
