Bit of a simple one here. Nauno simply spying a new target. Didn't spend all too long on it.
Yesterday I looked up if Avali could eat chocolate (did not find my answer btw) and noticed that planets in the habitable zone for humans would be unbearably hot for Avali. So it's time for me to bullshit an explanation for why Nauno isn't miserable or outright dead that will probably contradict things I've said or drawn before!
The temperature where Fynn Nauno and Euphi live is quite variable. In the winter it can get bitterly cold, and Nauno is all over that. Sometimes they might bring an icepack with them if it's a bit warmer out, like seen above. More often than not though, Nauno is completely fine in the winter.
In the summer? Forget it. This guy is not going anywhere in the summer. The AC in his room is very very strong (thanks to a little demon magic from Fynn), so it's basically a refrigerator in there (Fynn can't even walk in there without feeling sick). Fynn (with some help from Euphi) "borrowed" some chemistry equipment from a nearby school and use it to make their own dry ice. They then make "Dry Ice Packs" for Nauno, which help a lot! It's at least enough for him to go out and get lunch with Fynn during the summer.
For Fynn it's basically the opposite. Loves the summer, can't go outside during the winter. One time when visiting his mom (which he does every couple of years) he picked up a few loose stones from Hell and keeps them in his pockets during the winter. So at least his hands are nice and warm, so he won't collapse from the cold. He'll just be super uncomfortable.
Euphi doesn't really care much about the temperature. It's precipitation that bothers heart. Euphi can't walk outside at all without an umbrella if it's raining or snowing. It's not going to kill heart, but it is extremely unpleasant and painful (basically imagine sweating into an open wound. Not very pleasant is it?)

never say sorry -sub!art donaldson x fem!reader smut
Tumblr media
notes- this was literally supposed to be super short but i got carried away cause i am a whore (and proud of it)
cw- art is a little insecure:( , mentions of him having sex with tashi before (NO TASHI SLANDER I LOVE MY GIRL BUT IT'S FOR THE PLOT😭) , he cums prematurely (like...really..) art's a whiny little slut, art keeps calling reader love ( i got a thing for that pet name sorry y'all) , reader calls art 'artie' once cus it's cute&idc.
thinking about art constantly apologizing while having sex :( like ur unzipping his pants and he's already bucking his hips up into your hand, and then immediately muttering "sorry":(( my babyyy
so at first you think that okay, whatever, it's just something that slips out
but then he does it SO many times that you're actually starting to be concerned
like, you're giving him head and he moans a little too loudly- he's apologizing again. while kissing, you pull back for air and he still follows you, mouth half-open, wanting more - but then he realizes and he apologizes again.
but one time he really caught you off guard-
it had been a long day for him, spending almost all day training for his upcoming match. he barely had any time to rest, so he comes back to his dorm, taking off his shirt and pants, getting into bed with you only with his baby-blue boxer briefs on.
he kisses you. he's so fucking tired, but he still kisses you. 'cause he needs you, especially after the day he just had. you could feel his hard cock, practically begging you to take his boxers off.
"please love, wanna see you" he says while tugging at your top, watery eyes glistening with tears waiting to be spilled.
you take it off and unclasp your bra, little whimpers leaving his lips at the sight of you over him, with your tits out. you would love to take your time with him, really. to hear him beg and plead for you. but he's so eager, and so polite about it too- you just can't do that to him right now. so when you take off his boxers, his cock immediately jumps up, slapping his lower abdomen, right over his strawberry-blond happy trail.
"aww baby, look at you. you're so pretty aren't you?" you smile down at him, admiring how his legs shake slightly at every word you say. "hmm? aren't you?" you repeat. "mmghn- yeah, i- uhh i am" he says, eyes almost rolling back from the lack of touch. "you're what? say it." he sighs. you do this a lot. 'self love is important' you usually tell him- but not now. not when his dick is out, aching and leaking and begging to be touched. but just for the sake of it- just because he wants to please you, he says it. "i'm pretty"
"good boy," you coo, finally bringing a finger down to his cock, only to circle his pink, wet tip. and with that, he loses it. his mind goes blank, and he can't help it- all the waiting, the anticipating made him lose control of his body. he really didn't want to cum, he wanted to be good for you, but you were just so hot, he couldn't hold back. so immediately after his white, thick and warm liquid lands partially on his stomach and a bit on your hand, he starts babbling out apologies.
"i'm sorry, i'm so sorry love, please don't be mad, please- i'll clean up after myself- oh my god i'm so sorry-" he was so obviously tired, he could barely make up the words, yet he still continued apologizing. until you cut him off.
"art, baby- you dont need to apologize to me! what's up with this" you ask, softly. "you know i love making you feel good. and it's even better when i get feedback like this" you giggle. his cheeks turn bright pink as he covers his face.
"but i literally came the second you touched me" he mumbles, shyly.
you kiss his shoulder, smiling. "and it was hot."
"i- I don't know how to explain it to you, love- i just don't want to disappoint you. tashi used to hate it when i did any of this, she hated hearing me, and stuff like that- sometimes it made me feel like i was an object to her or something, y-you know? she'd get mad at me, and uh- it wasn't great."
"oh." you could actually feel your heart breaking for the boy. he was so sweet, he never deserved any of that. "well i'm not tashi, and i definitely won't get mad at you for anything like that. i like hearing you, and believe it or not, this was really fucking hot. you're letting me know i'm making you feel good. what's wrong with that?"
"just don't wanna upset you." art shrugs.
"i promise you artie, you could never upset me." you peck his lips and he smiles. "now let's clean you up"

Hii. Can I request a George x reader, where after the war like a year later, she applies for a job at his shop? But she didn't go to Hogwarts so she doesn't know too much about the details of the war, and just them working together and fluff??
A Small Piece of Home
A/n: Ah so sorry with how long this took. I went a little off the prompt since I was having really bad writers block and this was all I could think of. This also got a little sadder and longer than I planned but there is fluff at the end. This also takes place about two years after the war, so around 2000. I tried to do as much research to make sure everything was as accurate as possible. Hope you like it, lovely. :)
Possible warning: mention of general and parent death.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was your first day at work. Nothing too extreme. You couldn’t keep living off the small amount of money you received after your mother passed. No, you needed to do something. Literally anything.
Enough time had passed that you were finally settling into a comfortable routine. Moving anywhere wasn’t a fun experience. Moving to a whole new country to be closer to the few scatter relatives you had was even less so. But it did have it’s perks. Your aunt would invite you over for dinner some weekends and she would always send you with leftovers so you wouldn’t have to cook for a few days. You were slowly starting to save whatever was left of your relationship with your father. So yeah, things were getting better.
Sure you felt out of sorts a little, the wizarding world here was so different from America, but you were adjusting. And that’s what led you here.
The ad in the Daily Prophet had been bright and colorful. It stood out among the plain black ink of all the other ones. “Stocker/ sales needed at Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes”. Seemed easy enough. You had worked customer service before. So after sending an owl loaded with the answers to some questions you received one back a few days later asking if you could start right away.
You took a deep breath as you pushed open the door and had to stop yourself for letting out a gasp. The shop was amazing. It was so full of color and had this light hearted energy that you never wanted to leave. Even when empty, this place almost seemed to have a heartbeat of its own. You were just looking around at everything when a voice called out
“Ah. You must be y/n, right?” Someone called from one of the higher floors. You looked around for the voice but couldn’t seem to find where it came from. A small laugh left your lips as you responded with a simple “yes”.
“You’re a little earlier than I thought you would be” You found the source of the voice a few floors above you. A tall red-head was hanging over the banister smiling down at you.
“Oh, yeah. The place was easier to find then I thought it would be. I’m still getting used to the area.” You shouted, probably a bit too loudly, in his general direction.
“Nothing wrong with that. George is still wrapping up some new products, I can show you where they go when he’s done. Oh I’m Fred by the way.” He said cooly, matching your loud voice. It made you laugh again.
You kept wandering around, trying to take in all the names and descriptions of the numerous items in the store. Growing more and more impressed as you inspected everything that was around you.
“Those are probably my favorite thing in here.” A voice said from behind you, causing you to let a surprised scream and drop the small flesh-colored ear.
“Oh shoot. Sorry” You say bending down to pick up the ear.
“Didn’t mean to startle you. I’m George by the way.” You had to do a double take when you looked at him before it clicked in your head. The owl said he and his brother owned the shop. Twins. You gave him a small smile and stuck out your hand.
“Y/n” He chuckled, a deep grumply sound.
“I would hope so.” George said as he took your hand and gave it a little shake. “Here. Let me show you where these things go and then we can open.” You noticed the brightly colored boxes he was carrying under one arm and offered to take some from him. He brushed you off and started pushing various boxes on the shelves, explaining the general order of what goes in each section of the shop.
“Typically our other brother, Ron, helps out but he’s been busy planning a wedding lately. So we decided we needed an extra set of hands.” George had explained to you in between his tour.
All of the products seemed to be organized by how much havoc you wanted to cause. More harmless things were in the front, closer to the ground to catch the eyes of younger kids that came through. More “dangerous” and obnoxious things were higher up, all the way up to the dark arts protection at the very back of the store. It seems easy enough to grasp. It would just take you a little bit to learn what products did what, but you were excited to learn.
“So how are you liking London?” Fred seemed to pop out of nowhere. That was going to take some getting used to.
“I’ve only been here a couple of months but I like it so far. I haven't been out too much. This is actually my first time in Diagon Alley.” You responded. Unable to keep the excitement out of your voice.
The two of them exchanged a little sad look before George spoke up.
“It’s definitely getting better again. There was..” He started before pausing for a second.”There was a lot to rebuild after everything that happened.”
You knew what he was talking about. Your aunt and father had explained all about the war that had ended just a little over a year and a half ago.
“We could show you around sometime!” He says, the little bit of gloom gone from his voice.
“I would love that.” You respond and they both look at each other and nod. Clearly planning something.
A little after that the twins decided that they were ready to open. “You can just watch for today if you want?” George says when he notices how nervous you were.
“I think I’ll be fine.” you're not sure how confident you sound but he just nods and drops it.
Overall, it was a pretty steady day. You stuck to stocking, helping a few younger kids that came in. Stumbling a little over remembering how many sickles were in a galleons, but otherwise pretty smooth.
George had tried to keep some small talk going throughout the day. Learning a little more about you but he kept it light. He could sense how you always tried to dodge the topic of family or the big “why did you move here” where you pretend to hear someone call you. It wasn’t necessarily something you wanted to talk about your first day. You were used to the way everyone's face would fall and they would instantly pity you. That wasn't something you wanted to happen with the twins. At the end of the day, you could really see yourself liking them. George especially stood out.
You shook that thought out of your head and continued to help them close up the shop. After everything was in order you said your goodbyes and headed off for the night.
The next few months went by smoothly. You somehow managed to survive the rush that came with back to school season. Fred and George’s other brother, Ron, had come around a few days a week to help out. The three of you were very grateful for the extra set of hands. After that died down, it was mostly owl orders which were super easy to get out.
Outside of the shop the twins and you started spending more time together. You even helped them come up with a few more product ideas. Everything was going great for the first time in a long while. George had started going out of his way to get you two to spend more time together.
One night while you were all huddled around looking at the latest product design, George had asked you to come to dinner at the burrow, yet again.
“Mum is dying to meet you.” George said when you tried to claim you were busy for the fifth time.
“Yeah. This is probably the most she’s heard about someone without meeting them. At this rate she’s going to pop into the shop and get it over with.” Fred interjected.
“Sooner or later she’s just going to think you don’t want to meet her at all.” George gave you the biggest puppy dog eyes and you caved.
“Alright. Alright. I’ll come.” You finally shout as they keep pushing the topic. “You two are the worst. You know that?” They just smile and you laugh, throwing the closest thing you can reach with a giant smile on your face.
The burrow wasn’t that far from your aunts turns out. You were a little apprehensive. It had been so long since you had been around a big family like that. Everything you had heard about Molly Weasley reminded you of your own mother and you'd be lying if that fact didn’t sting a little bit. The boys still didn’t know anything about that particular topic, which took some skating around. Family seemed like such a big part of their life and they wanted to know absolutely everything. It was hard to keep dancing around the topic and they seemed to get more and more pushy. You knew meeting their family would bring up the inevitable “what is your family like” question.
Yet Saturday came around and you found yourself at the front door. When you knocked there seemed to be a great flurry of movement behind the door. You heard at least five separate voices screaming that they wanted to be the one to get it. When you did open the door it seemed like Geoge had won whatever argument had taken. You were laughing despite yourself.
“I didn’t hear anything. Promise” You said as you took in George’s stern look.
“Seems like more than mum wanted to meet you.” George said, ushering you in.
Just like the first time you walked into the shop, you couldn’t keep the amazement out of your face as you looked around. The burrow was as warm and inviting as you imagined it would be. It instantly felt like home and this safe feeling wrapped around your chest and tucked it’s way past your nervousness.
“Is she her- Ah!” Said a woman from the kitchen. It was obvious this was Mrs. Weasley. “You must be y/n! You’re just on time, dinner's nearly ready” Her voice was full of excitement and she smiled brightly at you.
“George.” She turned suddenly stern. “Make sure you introduce her to everyone.”
He rolled his eyes. “Of course.”
If you haven't known any better you would have thought it was a special occasion. There had to be more people than you had ever met here. You did briefly remember George mentioning he came from a big family, but you never imagined that big.
You ticked off the names in your head. Ron and Hermione, Ginny and Harry, Bill and Fleur the latter currently holding their newborn daughter, Victoire. You felt like there were a few people missing despite the number of people here.
“Charlie still lives in Romania so he doesn’t come around much. And Percy’s..well he’s Percy still.” George said when you asked him. You just nodded. Trying to match all the faces to the names.
You sat down on the floor, right next to Fred who waved at you. He was talking to Ron about something and you just sat listening to everyone. Despite not talking to anyone, it didn’t feel awkward surprisingly. You would interject a little on conversations but otherwise just fell into a comfortable silence.
After about ten minutes Mrs. Weasley announced dinner was ready and everyone started making their way to the kitchen. When you tried to give Molly a hand, she shooed you to the table with a laugh.
“Absolutely not.” Was all you were able to make out as she all but pushed you into a chair next to the twins. Who were trying to hold in their own laughter at your bewildered expression.
“Well I don’t see you two offering to help.” You shot back at them.
“Cause we know better.” George said with a wink.
All that could be heard for the first few minutes were plates clinking and the small babbles of Victoire from across the table. When the first question was asked.
“So dear, how are you adjusting?” Mrs Weasley asked you. You smiled.
“A lot better now that I’ve had some time. Working at the shop has given me a lot of time to learn how things are over here.” You looked at the twins. George seemed to have a pink tinge to his cheeks. “The twins have been really patient with me and helped me get more accustomed to everything”
“That’s great! You have family here though right?” She seemed slightly concerned.
“Oh yeah. Most of my family is here actually. My aunt lives in the next town over.” You kept the answer short but she just kept going.
“I would hate to think you were all alone over here. The boys told me you were from America so I worried.”
“America? How’d you end up over here then?” Fleur chimed in. Your face fell.
“Well. um. My parents met while my mom was working at MACUSA. He was visiting for some conference. She was working in the department of international travel, so I’m assuming they crossed paths and the rest is history I guess. Mom didn’t want to just leave everything behind when I was born and they were a little rocky anyways. So he went back and she raised me over there.” You tried to gloss over the biggest part of that question but Fleur didn’t drop it.
“Then why move here at all?” You could tell she was just curious, her tone light and friendly. You still couldn’t help the pit in your stomach.
“Well a big part of it was I wanted to finish school but... “ You paused weighing if it was really worth ruining the happy energy in the room. You let out a deep breath. “The biggest reason was my mom passed away a few months before I left. We had already talked about coming over anyways as she had gotten in a big fight over some stuff with her family. I’m assuming it was health related since she had been sick for a while and hiding it from them. So that was kinda the last push I needed. I had nothing but bad memories and needed a new start.” Everyone had paused and looked at you. Fleur suddenly looked like she was very sorry for pressing the subject.
“Oh you poor thing.” Mrs. Weasley said suddenly. You could feel your chest tightening up at the attention. You cleared your throat.
“I..I have to use the bathroom. Excuse me.”
“It’s right around the corner, dear” As you got up you noticed George looking at you with a strange look on his face. There it was. The pity everyone always gave you. They always treated you like you were suddenly fragile when they found out. You should have just kept your mouth shut. Just left it at the simple “I graduated and wanted to travel”, like you had told the twins originally.
You looked at your face in the mirror and could see the tears threatening to fall. You weren’t sad about your mother, sure it always hurt to say out loud but you had gotten all the closer you needed at her funeral. You were over it as much as anyone can be that loses a parent. What had you crying was the thought of everyone suddenly treating you differently. You were crying at the thought of being someone worth pitying. Most of all you were crying because you were frustrated at yourself for ruining a perfectly good evening with your problems.
You signed and whipped the few tears that had dripped down your face. Splashing some cold water on your face, you could see the slight red tint that took your eyes. “Get over it” You muttered to yourself as you took a deep breath, getting ready to apologize and get back to normal.
“‘Ow was I supposed to know?” You could hear Fleur muttering softly to someone.
“She hadn’t even told us yet.” A voice you recognized as George responded back.
“Enough.” Harry, you thought, cut in. “Trust me, that was a look of someone who just wants to forget about it.” You were grateful that someone seemed to understand.
“Harry’s right. The poor girl looked terrified. The last thing she needs is for us to make this any harder on her.” Molly said in a stern voice.
When you walked into the room, it seemed like everyone turned to stare at you. Shit. The ball clenched back into your chest.
“I’m really sorry. I’m suddenly not feeling the best. I think I might just go to my aunts for the night.” You said. “It was really nice to meet you all. I’m sorry I have to go so early.” You apologize once more. Giving the table a small smile.
Mrs. Weasley gave you a soft, kind smile and stood up. “At least take some food with you. There’s always left overs.” You crossed your arms over your chest and nodded. She quickly scrambled to get you a plate of food wrapped up.
George was looking at you, everyone else seemed to be back to normal.
“Alright dear. That should be enough.” Mrs Weasley said, handing you a small bag. The two of you walked to the front door.
“Thank you. I’m sorry if I ruined dinner.” You said in a small voice.
“No. No. Don’t worry about it. These things happen. And um..y/n” Her voice got softer. “Feel free to come over whenever you like.” Her voice was so sincere that you couldn’t help but throw your arms around her neck in a big hug. She let out a surprised grunt but quickly returned the hug.
Over your shoulder you saw George standing in the doorway to the kitchen.
“I thought since you weren't feeling well and don’t like to apparate, I could walk you to your aunts.” George grumbled, running his hand through his hair.
“Well it looks like someone remembered their manners.” Mrs. Weasley said in a cheeky tone. She gave you one more hug before saying her final goodbye and heading back to the kitchen with the others.
The two of you walked out the door, heading along the garden path to your aunts.
“I’m sorry. That turned into a mess.” You said after a few minutes of silence. George let out a little huff.
“Y/n. You didn’t do anything wrong. If anything you're blowing it a little out of proportion.” He said cooly. You were taken aback for a second.
“I just. I know how people tend to react-” You started.
“Look. we’ve all lost people. Everyone in that room has lost someone they cared about.” He had stopped walking and his usual humor was gone completely. “Honestly. I’m a little hurt that was how I had to find out. But trust me, no one in the house is going to think you're weak or anything.” You were having trouble holding his eyes.
“I just don’t want people to pity me.” You say letting your eyes fall to the ground.
“No one is going to do that. Trust me. They had all been so excited to meet you after everything I told t-” He suddenly cut off and when you look at him, you notice his cheeks have gone a little pink. This seems to cut whatever tension is in the air.
“What have you told them Georgie?” You tease. Happy to get over this topic.
“Well.. I mean.. Nothing but the truth. How you’re kind and caring and smart. And maybe something along the lines of how cute I think you are.” His hand is running through his hair. Now it was your turn to blush. Sure the two of you had been getting closer over the last few months but you had never expected him to think of you like that.
“So that’s why everyone wanted to meet me so much?” You asked, suddenly feeling awful all over again.
“And I just made myself look like an absolute idiot by running out.” You were instantly very self conscious and wanted to crawl into a cave.
“Not an absolute idiot. You couldn’t do that with Ron there.” He said and you laughed. ‘Plus, mum seemed to like you enough. I doubt she’s ever going to stop bugging me about you coming over. If you want to, that is.” He suddenly sounded a little timid. You laughed and stood up on your tiptoes, giving his cheek a quick little peck.
“Of course I want to come back. I have to redeem myself somehow right?” You giggled at the dumbstruck look on his face.
He took your hand and the two of you walked back to your aunts. When you got to the door, he gave you a small kiss to your forehead before saying goodbye.
You quickly found yourself over at the burrow constantly. Mrs. Weasley teaching you a lot of simple house magic that you had never seen before. It sure made your life a lot easier.  For the first time in a long while, you felt like you had a big happy family. It wasn’t long before you and George were official.
Now the most awkward thing in your life was everyone taking beats on how long it was before you and George got married. You would always get super red whenever that was mentioned before George would tell whoever it was to “piss off” and give you a giant kiss to get them to leave you two alone.

Sunkissed - Chapter 1
description: Wedding of the century rolls around as the previous college clique, along with the rest of their family members, stay in preparation for it. During this time, Riley meets Lucas, a gorgeous, green-eyed wallflower who happens to be immediately taken by her. Little did she know, he has a deep secret. One that will either change her views on him forever or make her feel closer to his world.

chapter one; riley
Sparkley Farkley: Did you know that the slowest marathon time ever is 54 years, eight months, six days, eight hours, 32 minutes, and 20.3 seconds? Yeah, in 1912, an Olympic marathoner from Japan supposedly disappeared during the middle of a race. Some say that he stopped to get a drink from an outdoor party, but ended up staying longer than he should have. Risque, if you ask me. Anyways, he was too embarrassed to finish the race, so he flew back to Japan instead. Years later, he decided to finish what he started by running the whole marathon himself. What I'm trying to say is WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU? Riley, you're seriously taking much longer to get to the boardwalk than this Japanese marathon guy. Hurry!!
I looked at the horrifically long paragraph Farkle had sent me and sighed. Being best friends with him also meant being best friends with your very own encyclopedia, which can be extremely useful at times. Although, it really isn't when your phone is constantly being bombarded with numerous texts about everything and nothing.
Gentle reminder that I live farther from the beach than you do. I'll be there soon! Don't miss me too much :)
I quickly text back. I gripped onto my camera strap, which is draped over my shoulder, as I start quickening my pace.
When we became closer over the years, Farkle and I both created a tradition of spending almost every Saturday down at the boardwalk. In regards to this, the main rule that we've agreed upon would be that if one of us couldn't make it, we would have to have an extremely valid excuse. Me being the more "laid back" friend, I've been pretty lenient on Farkle if he couldn't make it. Wish I could say the same about him, though.
Last night, I had to stay up till two in the morning helping my mother out at the flower shop. Arranging flowers isn't as easy as one may think. In result, I woke up later than usual, causing me to be about 30 minutes late. So far, I've received a fact text from him for every minute I ran late. It truly amazes me how he could just drop these facts off the top of his head.
I'm practically already running when I see Farkle by the entrance, arms crossed.
"I'm sorry!" I pant. I take a second to breathe before I continue speaking. "I.. I woke.. Wow, I'm not cut out to be.. an athlete, huh?" I joke.
He rolls his eyes as a grin forms on his face. "Where were you?"
"I was up all night helping my mom with the flowers. I woke up super late. I'm so sorry."
He nods in approval of my excuse. "That's okay. However, I don't think we could go to the diner now. Brooklyn and her minions are there. Seated in our spots too!"
The thought of Brooklyn made me sick to my stomach. Brooklyn was the Regina George of Harbor High School, and basically all of Santa Cruz. Like your typical teen cliche, she was the popular girl who also the prettiest. Brooklyn also had her own entourage, as she always had two minions following her. With her bitchy personality, you may say that it's surprising that she gets all the guys. With her body, though, it really isn't. It's probably how she had my crush of four years and counting, Charlie Gardner, falling for her.
"Well, I guess we would have to postpone our meal then," I say, linking my arms with his. We enter the boardwalk and head straight for the arcade. We're surrounded by all the games you could never ever get tired of. From Dance Dance Revolution to laser tag to racing games, the Santa Cruz Boardwalk Casino Arcade has you covered. Farkle and I have our common favorite, air hockey.
He let go of my arm, dashing straight to the air hockey table. "You ready to get your ass beat?"
He asks, slipping in a token. We love each other very much, but when it comes to air hockey, it's like we're two different people.
"You should be asking yourself that, Minkus." As air starts to shoot through the tiny holes from the table, we both grabbed our paddles. Suddenly, the puck falls through my pocket instead of Farkle's. "Well, that's a first! I guess I'm starting."
I hit the puck as hard as I can towards his goal. Hoping that this time my first hit would make it, he blocks the puck in a swift move and smiles. "Not today." This goes on for quite a bit. I concentrate on the puck as it glides across the table back and forth. That is, until a distraction came my way. Charlie.
I offer him a double take before actually realizing that it was him. He probably didn't even notice me, which was a good thing on my part. I didn't want him to know that I was here. Out of impulsive thinking, I ducked down to hide behind my side of the table. This wasn't really the best decision, though. Farkle managed to make a goal and yell on behalf of his victory. I don't even have to see what's happening to know that attention was surely brought towards us.
"Farkle!" I call out in a whisper. He walks around the table and takes a seat next to me.
"So, explain to me why we're hiding behind- "
"Riley!" Charlie exclaims. Mortified, I lift my head up to find him standing right in front of us.
"Hi, Charlie." I saw awkwardly. Thankfully, Farkle gets up off the ground and pulls me up, as I was too scared to even move.
Farkle clenches is jaw subtly enough that no one could notice, except for me. It's safe to say that he never liked Charlie. I don't blame him. Most of the time, he can be a total jackass.
I'm not too sure how or why I've liked him for so long, and still currently do. I like to think it's because of the fact that I'm always seeking the best in people. I don't necessarily like making assumptions out of people based on looks or first encounters. For Charlie, I realized how much of a good person he is, deep down, whilst working on a school project with him in the public library. My father, who so happened to be my teacher, assigned both of us as partners for a project that we had to turn in a matter of three days. Within those three days, we'd head to the library at night to work, but we were never productive. All we did was talk. Well, all Charlie did was talk. About himself, of course. I would just sit and listen. It was kind of odd not taking part in the conversation, but I mostly did not mind. As a matter of fact, I remember feeling like it was for the best since I would most likely say something stupid. Plus, I got to learn more about him and who he truly was. The downside of it was that I had to take our project home and finish it myself, but I thought that it was worth it. From that moment on, I couldn't help but keep thinking about him, about us.
Charlie extends his hand out to Farkle, expecting a shake, but he steps back. "I'll wait for you outside." He tells me. No, no. Please don't leave me alone with him.
"Well, that was awkward." He laughs. "But anyways, I am so glad I caught you. I was wondering if you're free like right now? I was hoping that you could help me out with something."
Crap. As much as I would love to help him, I promised Farke that I would spend the day with him. However, as I was looking up at Charlie's mesmerizing brown eyes, I seem to have ignored that fact. "Um, sure." I squeaked. I clear my throat and try again. "What would I be helping you with exactly?"
"You see, we're doing headshots in drama, and you're kind of known to be a really talented photographer," I blush as he says so.  Along with the fact that his words make me swoon, another thing about Charlie that I liked was the fact that he is a performing arts fanatic. I'm presuming that it's something that he would like to achieve in the future. He's actually really talented if I'm being honest.
"So, would it be alright if you got a couple of portrait shots of me by the beach?" Charlie asks.
"Maybe in return, I can buy you a milkshake afterward."
Farkle is so going to kill me after this.  "Er, okay."
"Great! C'mon, let's go." He starts heading towards the exit as I trail behind him. Hoping that he was the gentleman I thought he'd be, I expected him to open the door for me. Instead, he ends up leaving it to close behind him. I sigh, disappointed for getting ahead with my thoughts. Once I've exited the arcade, I immediately scan my surroundings in search for Farkle.
"I'm here." He calls out from behind me. I turn to find him leaning against a wall.
"You're going to hate me," I confess.
A smirk creeps up on his face. "Not gonna lie, I was already kind of assuming."
"You're not mad?"
"No," Farkle says softly. "I still hate that bastard, though. But I mean if you like him that much-"
I pull him into a hug. "Thank you," I whisper.
"Yeah, okay." He wraps his arms around my back and chuckles lightly.
"Riley?" Charlie yells.
I pull away from Farkle and adjust my outfit. This would technically be the first time I get to hang out with Charlie alone, so I obviously want to look presentable. However, that's clearly not the case since I'm currently in my maroon Harvard sweater that Farkle had actually bought me from when he visited last year, along with a pair of faded ripped jeans.
"Do I look okay?" I ask.
He holds two thumbs up. "Can't say no to a girl in Ivy League gear."
"I love you, and thanks a bunch!" I plant a quick kiss on his cheek before running towards Charlie.
Once I've caught up to him, we both head to the beach together.
I truly do love the beach. I love the ambiance of waves crashing against the shore, along with the wailing of seagulls as they soar across the sky. Not to mention, the smell of the ocean beach as well. Everything about the beach is so captivating and peaceful, especially since it's a little early and not a lot of people are here. The afternoon is the absolute worst time to visit the beach. The fact that there are so many people who usually come on a day to day basis, makes me a little anxious to go.
Charlie leads me to where the dock is located. Farkle and I would usually come to take pictures underneath the dock. This area is quite aesthetically pleasing.
"I think this is a great spot." He says, placing his bag down as I begin to adjust the settings of my camera. I let him know that I'm ready once everything's all set. Charlie then runs towards the shoreline and starts posing of a shot. Since I'll be capturing portrait shots, I made sure that my camera is set so all my photos can have a shallow depth of field. This way, Charlie will be in focus as the background will be a bit blurry. After taking a few photos here and there, I stop to look at them. Charlie was perfectly centered, the lighting was on point, and all shots have great composition. Perfect. I think to myself. However, Charlie apparently doesn't exactly think so when he sees them.
"Yeah, this situation just isn't working for me. Let's try something different." He looks around for a moment. "Here, why don't you get some bird-eye shots of me laying on the sand."
I was a little offended that he didn't like the photos I originally took. I spoke out, irritated. "I thought we were taking portraits?"
"I'm just trying to think outside of the box here, Riles. Maybe the photos will turn out better." I scoff at what he had just said. What difference does it make? You're just going to be lying down. And I thought all headshots were portraits. There he goes acting like a douche, but here I am, still taking interest in him.
Charlie lies down on the sand and places his hand behind his head. From the looks of it, he could pass for a Hollister or Abercombie & Fitch model.  I stand directly on top of him to get good shots. If I'm being honest, this isn't the ideal position I'd want to be in. It's a little uncomfortable and weird, really.
Suddenly, water hits the shore and Charlie attempts to save his khaki pants by jerking straight up. Instead, jerking straight up somehow caused me to tumble forward, allowing both of us to fall back down. I also end up dropping my camera on the sand. Water continues to run beneath Charlie, which caused his whole outfit to be soaked. "Shit!"
The water still kept going around us. I panic as I watch it slowly ooze towards my camera. Miraculously, the water stopped before it could reach it. I graciously let out a sigh of relief. "Will you get the fuck off of me now?!" He yells in annoyance. I flinched when he does so and realize that what was happening: I was on top of Charlie Gardener. Because I was on top of him, I didn't get hit by the water at all. I quickly scurried to my feet and grabbed my camera.  I turned to Charlie, who was still really angry that he was drenched. He got up from the ground and gathered his stuff. "Thanks to you," He snaps. "I am soaking wet, and I have rehearsals for the musical after this!"
I feel a familiar tightness gripping my throat. As Charlie continues to curse at me, a burning heat rushes through my body and I can hardly breathe. The DJ over by the boardwalk starts blasting music that seems to be ten times louder than usual. My surroundings then become too horrifically bright. My hands become clammy as I start to lose control of my body. My vision starts to get blurry and my heartbeat begins to speed up to the point where I could hear it.
Once Charlie finishes grabbing his stuff, he walks over to me. He stops and takes a deep breath. "Just email me the photos whenever you can." And with that, he walks away. When I've lost sight of him, I walk towards the pebbles near the ocean. I stare out to sea, trying to take big breaths. I stay until I've finally coaxed my heartbeat back to normal.

Would you guys have any tips for aspiring indie visual novel developers working in very small teams like yours? Stuff that you didn't think would matter or things you didn't think would happen, but once they did, you thought 'oh man, I wish I had thought about this before/somebody had told me about this!' In case there aren't any: what do you guys think are the most difficult parts, and what are the best parts, of working in a small team?
I was originally going to go off in this one by saying that we’re definitely not successful enough to be giving out tips. But Animal Lover was well rated and we *did* actually release it. So screw it. I’ll pass this one to Maia for artist tips after I ramble on for a little bit.
Universal Tips:90% of the people who email you after you release a game on Steam are blowing smoke up your ass. Proceed with caution.
Making video games is hard. Even games with minimal gameplay like these. You’re not taking the easy route by doing a visual novel, you’re just taking a route that a small team can actually manage to make.
Small Team Tips:If you’re not paying them (whether at all or for a non-livable wage), be patient with them. This means planning out how long it will take, getting a rough estimate of how long the project SHOULD take, and then multiplying it by four.
Wear multiple hats. This is non-negotiable. There’s no room in game development for ‘idea guys’. Prepare to code, prepare to do SOME visual development, some sound design, some UI design, some writing, some whatever. If you have just barely enough money to make an indie visual novel instead of a full-fledged AAA release, then you don’t have enough money to make everyone else make your dreams come true.
Writing Tips:Write a book first.
No, seriously, write a book first. Maybe write a few.
Writing a visual novel was like writing a book, which I’ve done, but then when the book is done, you need to edit it, which is par for the course... but then with Animal Lover, no matter how done the script was, there was something to do, always. Like always. Always. If you’re not prepared to write a novel by itself, you’re certainly not prepared to write a novel that you have to code and potentially add branching paths for.
Visual novels are writing heavy, and even though writing standards are certainly not sky-high right now, you want to have good writing, because if you want to differentiate yourself from the pack even a little, you don’t want people saying “Yeah, the writing was okay” when 80% of your game is writing. This also means that visual-novel writing tips hew pretty close to regular writing tips. On that note:
Characters are key. I am a dude who loves a complex plot, but complex plots in mediums where you can’t rely on environmental storytelling and visual inference (it’s hard to implement in visual novels, though we tried with Kyle’s hair in the canon ending and with the different markings each character has based on their animals), complex plots mean lots of explanation. Which we didn’t even totally avoid in Animal Lover. Any more complex and it would have gotten boring.Thusly; focus on characters. Visual novel players (dating sim or otherwise) are there to interact with characters.
Learn to write in-code. It’ll save you time.
The only thing maybe more important than character in visual novels is pacing. In a dialogue-heavy medium, it is easy to forget how much time it’s been since the last big event happened. Keep an eye on where you’re spending the most time, what you’re interacting with at any given time and whether or not you enjoy reading it.
Comedy has value. Animal Lover is not the steamiest otome game out there, and steaminess is the general consensus for what games have the most value. Yet, somehow, people are drawn to Animal Lover. Comedy endears readers to characters, makes them remember their time spent fondly and actively engages readers. If you can make it funny, do make it funny. Animal Lover gets dark, but the moments spent laughing before that happened gave it value and made the dark stuff heavier.
Producer/Director Tips:Explore your engines. We did our game in Ren’Py, which worked and we managed, but we spent our time wondering if it would have been easier or more flexible in Game Maker or TyrannoBuilder. It’s not that we regret it, we just didn’t know.
Be as unique as you are. This is seriously only going to do good for your game. When I think that maybe Animal Lover isn’t selling as well as it ought to, I remember the other visual novels that have come out I haven’t even heard of because the art was standard or the writing was ‘meh’ and didn’t really capture anyone’s attention. As an indie, it’s just a good business move.
Dream big; settle for less. Not less as in lesser, but I had a few big studio songs and some really huge ideas to include in the game. Those big ideas led me to the small ones we found (like putting Bottom Over Top in the BIG SCENE or to having the multiple-faces thing for the characters) and they made the game better.
Maia’s Tips:
First off I disagree with Wil’s point about “writing a book first”. Plenty of people have made and posted vn’s on newgrounds and deviantart without having written an entire book before. Just understand that it takes more than just writing a story. A lot more.
Art wise, the biggest lesson I had to learn was that some of the super cool game stuff just wasn’t feasible for one artist. (I wanted a majority of the game to look more like first person illustrations with unique moving parts and body language. You can see why I didn’t do that).   The Second biggest lesson I learned was hire more artists. Or work with a buddy, I know people like to make these for fun. Video games require art in places you may not even have considered before. There’s characters and all they entail, including unique items (extra outfits, one-time items or expressions, backgrounds, every part of the UI and menus, any little details you want to add like the button changing color when you hover/click/idle etc. It goes on.
Edits can really pile up, so it’s good to tackle a single aspect at a time. All the bases first then all the clothing, all the buttons on menu A, B then C. You get the point. It can waste time if you have to keep going back to fix or adjust something because a color didn’t match up, or you approached it differently than the 4 others you spent good time planning and executing (looking at you Miguel. Fuck your blinking I hate you.)
Art takes time and preparation. I used to work pretty quickly, but mostly that’s because I didn’t used to as much consideration into my drawings. But you also have to balance Quality and Speed so you can do good work while making deadlines.
Preparing for a game is incredibly important. Your first designs should not be your final designs. While it won’t always be the case, you need to keep in mind that the more you draw a character, the more small changes will occur causing your design to evolve and become inconsistent. Creating reference sheets and mock ups for each character, item/accessory, or icons is a very good way to keep tabs on consistency.
THe last thing I can think of for now is that it’s really *really* good to look up lega information, even if this isn’t a project you’re aiming to sell. I’ve found it extremely helpful to learn about contract creation, copyright information, business building etc etc.
Oh, and you’re second question
Working in a team for me was pretty difficult and a lot of fun at the same time. I had a blast chiming in to tell my thoughts or ideas on whatever dialogue  we were discussing, or making design changes to something more interesting from the request of Travis or Wil. On the other hand, there’s a lot I wanted to do that I either had to defend or change at their behest. They also had to do this! And it was a big learning experience to have to compromise and discuss with these guys. It feels good to have gone through all this, because the game turned out really great, and I’ve never been prouder of something I’ve created.  It was tough at times, but the experience and growth I gained was genuinely worth it.
10/10 would do again.

Conversation
Acme Radio Transcript
Interviewer: Hello there and welcome into Acme Radio. Again, sorry to Rachael, we had to fade down her in the mix as she's on vacation but that's okay because we have a good reason. We have brought in an artist to perform live today, we've got Zealyn here in the studio. Hello Zealyn.
Zealyn: Hello! Thanks for having me.
Interviewer: Thank you for coming in.
Zealyn: Yeah, of course.
Interviewer: Big show tonight at the High Watt.
Zealyn: Yep. High Watt.
Interviewer: Gonna be good. Have you been over there?
Zealyn: No. The only venue I've played in Nashville was the East Room.
Interviewer: Okay.
Zealyn: Yeah. So it's the first time playing the High Watt umm... I've heard great things so I'm excited.
Interviewer: Yes, it's a nice room. There's really like, not a bad spot to see which is good. Most venues in town have a pole right in the middle somewhere.
Zealyn: Okay.
Interviewer: That one doesn't.
Zealyn: Great. Awesome.
Interviewer: Umm... But Zealyn's gonna be out there at the High Watt tonight with Andreas Moss and, I was curious about this, Savannah Sgro?
Zealyn: I think it's Sgro. That's how I always said it?
Interviewer: Yeah.
Zealyn: Yeah.
Interviewer: Okay. S-G-R-O so you can understand our confusion but I think that's it. Doors at 7, the show is at 8. You can get your tickets right now at mercylounge.com.
Zealyn: Yep.
Interviewer: Umm... You mind doing a song first so we can kinda get a little taste of what's gonna happen tonight?
Zealyn: I love to. Absolutely. Yeah, I'm going to sing the title track of the EP that I just released over a week ago- just over a week ago. Umm... yeah, it's called A Weekend in Maine.
Interviewer: Alright. Perfect.
*Zealyn sings A Weekend in Maine*
Interviewer: There you have it. That is Zealyn live here in the Acme Radio studio with a brand new song, the just dropped at uhh... like two weeks ago, a week in a half ago or something like that.
Zealyn: Yeah.
Interviewer: It's awesome.
Zealyn: Thank you.
Interviewer: Sounding great.
Zealyn: I appreciate that.
Interviewer: That is the title track, A Weekend in Maine. The EP dropped May 17th and you pretty much hit the road immediately.
Zealyn: Yeah. Yeah like 3 days later. Don't recommend it. It was pretty- it's a lot at once but it was- it's been fun.
Interviewer: And what is Maine is there something that, did you grew up there, did you have like- is there a far off place that you're like, "Oh.*something I couldn't understand*"
Zealyn: Yeah. I mean, I grew up in Boston. My family. So we always take trips to Maine. And it's just kind of umm... it's a place where a lot of memories were built, a lot of love, a lot of just... Growing up and whatnot and so, it's a really nostalgic place full of nothing but good memories that got me where I am today so... Yeah.
Interviewer: And now you're based in LA.
Zealyn: Based in LA.
Interviewer: Yeah, see I didn't know if it was just like looking at the opposite end of the country.
Zealyn: Right.
Interviewer: And you're like...
Zealyn: Wanting a peaceful life. To get away from the city I mean- It's some of that too as well. Yeah, the city can be uhh... I mean- you know, here in Nashville, it's always the hustle and bustle of music. Everyone- there's so much talent that like, "Go go go go!" So uhh... I feel like this EP is kind of like a longing to escape and just like feel free and calm for a second because it just can be crazy.
Interviewer: Yeah.
Zealyn: Yeah.
Interviewer: Absolutely. Again, Zealyn is here in town, Nashville, Tennessee, playing tonight. She's got a show at the High Watt with Andreas Mass and Savannah Sgro. It's gonna be a good show so I recommend grabbing your tickets now at mercylounge.com to celebrate her now- I guess, released in Nashville, and you've got quite a tour. Excuse me, quite a tour. You've got Atlanta coming up, the East Coast coming up in June.
Zealyn: Mhm.
Interviewer: And the West Coast back in August.
Zealyn: Yup.
Interviewer: Umm... Now, when you head out on these dates, is it something you take a whole crew with you? Do you have the whole band or do you kinda pick and choose as you go through the towns?
Zealyn: Umm... Yeah. It's kind of different each run. Umm... Some run, it's like a three-piece band and other runs, it's a four-piece and then obviously when we're home in LA, we do a whole five-piece band that I'm thankful enough to have friends that are like super talented and great people that can just play music with me. So yeah, just kinda depends on where. But tonight we'll be playing with a three-piece. A drummer, guitarist and I play keys and so umm... yeah.
Interviewer: Little more.
Zealyn: Keeping it- a little stripped- well not stripped, it will be so high energy and so fun. The drummer's amazing. But yeah, a small crew.
Interviewer: Yeah. It's gonna be good. I was listening to the EP the other day. There's some really really nice hype songs, really nice slower ones.
Zealyn: Thank you.
Interviewer: It's gonna be a good time. So again, that's at the High Watt tonight. Now, A Weekend in Maine obviously just dropped and you released it independently. Which is awesome.
Zealyn: I did.
Interviewer: Is that something you love or is that something you were just like necessary or how did you look at the independent aspect of your career?
Zealyn: I mean a little bit of both. It's not like I have labels coming to me like, "We wanna sign you right now!" I love being an independent artist right now for the time being. I think it's great. Have a small team of people that just really believe in the music and that goes a really long way. But uhh... yeah. I think for as long as I can, I'll stay independent and do it on my own. Hopefully, it gets too big one day that I'll have to bring on a bigger team. But uhh... yeah. I'm enjoying it. It's really rewarding. Put a lot of work into it.
Interviewer: Yeah.
Zealyn: A lot of hours. A lot of money. It's not easy. But it's really rewarding.
Interviewer: Yeah. Well, it seems to be working out. I mean, you've been uh... crushed in the socials and I see just constantly updating everything and you're working hard. It's great.
Zealyn: Trying. Thanks. Thank you.
Interviewer: Now, with the EP, did you do it all out in LA and who produced it like how did it all kinda come together?
Zealyn: Yeah. It was all written by me and different people. Every song I worked with different songwriters but it was - for the most part, all recorded by David Burris who is in the Arts District of Los Angeles.
Interviewer: Okay.
Zealyn: Incredible producer and like, just a great hang. It was so fun collaborating, just creating sounds and whatnot with him. So yeah, David Burris produce it all. Except for one song that was done by Aaron Marsh of Copeland. Umm so yeah.
Interviewer: And he produced your first EP?
Zealyn: He did. So yeah. The song that he did on this EP was actually supposed to release on the last EP. But I loved it so much, I wanted to like hang on to it and release it later. It's been three years and the song still holds up and I still love it so I put it on this EP. But yeah, he's also a genius songwriter and like, the layers he adds to songs are just- forget it, they're too good. Yeah.
Interviewer: No, that's cool. And there were some great little collaborations on that as well.
Zealyn: Yeah. First EP or? Yeah.
Interviewer: Yeah, for sure. Again, Zealyn is our guest. You could find her on the socials @zealyn or zealyn.co if you are looking up her website. Some nice merch there. You can listen to this new EP we're talking about, A Weekend in Maine. And you've gotten to spend a couple days in Nashville before your show tonight at the High Watt so, what have you gotten to do over Memorial Day Weekend? Anything you're just like, "Yes."
Zealyn: Okay. So I made a point on this trip to be a local and not be a tourist. So I ask a lot of friends where to go and hung out with any friends that I could hear and umm... few things. Favorite sandwich shop Mitchells.
Interviewer: Yeah. Good call.
Zealyn: So good! I don't know if that is like the local place or not. But it felt like it and it was so good. Also, went to Attaboy.
Interviewer: Attaboy.
Zealyn: *gasps* You don't know it?
Interviewer: I don't know.
Zealyn: Oh, I feel awesome right now.
Interviewer: Yeah.
Zealyn: I feel so cool. It's a speak-easy. You don't tell them what drink you want. They just say, "What do you like?" and you tell them all the things you like.
Interviewer: Okay.
Zealyn: And they create one for you and it's like always delicious.
Interviewer: Gotcha.
Zealyn: Umm... yeah. So I went there.
Interviewer: Sounds like a young person spot.
Zealyn: Okay. Come on!
Interviewer: I'm an old guy. *laughs*
Zealyn: Come on. Well no- But that's the thing though. It's not like- that's true.
Interviewer: I'm just kidding.
Zealyn: But it's not like a club or you know like- I don't know. It's like a very chill, calm hang that's just- yeah, it was fun.
Interviewer: That's my kinda vibe and I'm gonna check that out. Attaboy. Nice. Well, I'm glad that you've got to spend a couple of- you know, a few days in town and I know you got Atlanta tomorrow. So you're hitting the road after the gig night but I hope you have a safe tour.
Zealyn: Thank you.
Interviewer: And I hope you guys keep kicking ass. That's awesome.
Zealyn: Thanks.
Interviewer: Yeah. Again tonight at the High Watt, you can see Zealyn. She's gonna be out there with Andreas Mass and Savannah Sgro. Doors are at 7, show is at 8. mercylounge.com to grab your tickets or try to get them at the door if they are not already gone. And you can keep up with her on socials @zealyn that is Z-E-A-L-Y-N or zealyn.co. You mind doing another song for us?
Zealyn: I would love to.
Interviewer: Awesome. What are you gonna do this time?
Zealyn: I'm going to do Airline Wine. A song also off the EP.
Interviewer: I like that this one was actually the first one I went to cause I was like, "I wanna know what that song's about" *laughs*
Zealyn: It's literally about an airline bottle of wine. My friend was like, "You should write a song called Airline Wine." and I was like, "Okay." And it turned out to be beautiful so umm... yeah. Kinda started as a joke but turned into something I loved.
Interviewer: No that's great. the last song on the EP, right?
Zealyn: Last song on the EP. Yeah. Alright. Here we go.
*Zealyn sings Airline Wine*
Inyerviewer: There you go. That is Zealyn once again live here at the Acme Radio Studio with a little assist from her buddy DJ on guitar.
Zealyn: Woo!
Interviewer: That is a song called Airline Wine and you will find it on her new EP, A Weekend in Maine, which is out now so go check it. Thank you guys so much for stopping by today.
Zealyn: Aww. Thanks for having us.
Interviewer: Yeah. Good luck tonight. It's gonna be a good show. If you guys wanna join us, High Watt is where it is located. Andreas Mass and Savannah Sgro are gonna be on the bill. mercylounge.com to get your tickets and the show will start around 8 pm. Hope you guys, like I said, have safe travels for the rest of the tour and uhh... look forward to see you back in Nashville soon.
Zealyn: Thank you. Thanks for having us.
Interviewer: Alright. That is Zealyn guys. Z-E-A-L-Y-N.co, if you wanna find her website or @zealyn on the socials. You're listening to Acme Radio live- stick around just a little bit, we've got some more great interviews and a lot of good stuff that's coming up at 3 'o' clock here on Acme Radio.
