OMG finally a trailer for this I don't loathe!

It's still not going to be anything like the novel, which is amazing but is all about a former noblewoman fallen on hard times being coerced by circumstances to become a mistress of a cold upper class man who doesn't really see her or any other woman as truly human and then has to cope with developing feelings and realizing she sees him as nothing but a wallet and can't stand him, and rightly so. That novel was surprisingly clear eyed about the bleak options and lack of power faced by period women and censors would never let its topics fly. Too bad, it's a great character study tbh, and while I can't say I ever loved either of the protagonists as people, they were really neat, complex characters to read about (ML's painful realization arc is glorious, mmm.)

Episode 1 & 2

Under the cut for length and spoilers

- Everything about Ning Yi’s “intro”- the dream, whose context is revealed in bits and pieces over the next  60-ish episodes- in hindsight, tells you where this character will end up. The only way he gets what he wants is by killing himself, spiritually and/ or metaphorically. He has to kill Liulang to be Emperor. It’s weirdly prophetic, that dream, and  maybe ties into the whole “you can’t escape your destiny” thing of the show.  Side note: there’s a reason why Ning Yi reminds me of Emily Wilson’s translation of the Odyssey which starts with “Tell me about a complicated man”- the trickery, the revenge, the anger, the ambition, the longing for home-all of that is a character archetype that I AM KNOWN TO FAVOUR. GOD THIS FUCKING SHOW HAD ME FROM THE START DIDN’T IT. 

-The first time Ning Yi presents himself to the Emperor in the Court- the Emperor is sniffing from the perfume sachet. WELL PLAYED, SHOW. i feel stabbed in the heart.

-Dahua stan for life.

-Zhu Yin stan for life. 

-Ni Ni stop being so fucking beautiful. 

-Feng Zhiwei being manipulative as a kid- again, hints of where that character could have gone, if they’d wanted it to. 

-God I really wished we had got more of Qiu Mingying! The actress, Liu Mintao, is so great, and also I JUST WANT HER TO KICK NING SHIZHENG’S ASS SIX WAYS TO SUNDAY, like she has first dibs on that, even before Ning Yi. 

-i say it again the owner of the Yongan clothing store is willing to return the money, this is the THIRD TIME THIS WEEK, PRINCE OF CHU, PLEASE FUCK YOUR BOYFRIEND ELSEWHERE. 

- classic meet cute, my heart! oh you poor things, you don’t know how terrible this is going to be for you! Also I enjoy NY telling lies while mostly sticking to the truth: see above on the Odysseus comparison.

-Copper coins- Is the currency kai yuan tong bao or something else? WE SHALL SEE. 

-Ning Yi polishing his mother’s qin instrument - oh god, sudden flashback(flash forward!) to that episode where he’s reunited with her, i’m crying already, this is unfair.

Two eps in and I am adoring this.

It has close to nothing in common with the novel except the character names, but it has that awesome Harlequin romance vibe that I adore.

The visuals are GORGEOUS!!!! They turned ML from a realistic period upper class man (who believes lower classes and women aren't really human and are there only to serve him; the deliciousness of the novel is his slow and painful realization that this is not the case, as least as far as FL is concerned) into a dreamboat tenderly protecting FL from wannabe rapists and FL from weak in a lot of ways but emotionally in terms of whether she likes ML or just uses him for money hard as nails woman but ehhhh...whatever. I never hoped for more than a swoony romance from an adaptation and I get this:

This also joins the growing list of dramas that inexplicably have goofy comedic trailers while being nothing like that in reality. I completely do not get the point of that marketing tbh - don't you want to attract an audience who will actually enjoy what you made? Anyone drawn in by goofy trailers would be mad and peace out and people like me who'd enjoy the drama will pass it by - I almost didn't check it out because I hated the early trailers so.
