Foggy evening in party town

The Yongsan-gu district between Seoul City modern City Center and Gangnam district was mostly defined by the large US military base there. And the surroundings such installations usually generate.

As the military presence in central Seoul is downscaling, the area are into a large transition and gentrification. That means growing into a combination of very affluent neighbourhoods with supporting upscale establishments, and some interesting entertainment, food and drinks area.

Craft beer and international cuisine

Back when I was visiting, the craft beer and homemade sausage/burgers trend had just been ignited in East-Asia. And the small alleyways and old Seoul wooden house areas was converting into small pubs, bars and eateries. All with a distinct charm a combination of historic memories and respectful modern artisans can bring. Together with well educated, very modern Korean youth and locals.

Being easy accessible by metro, not only tourists and Gangnam people enjoyed this area. A lot of people from around the city got there for the good drinks, quality food and the good mood in a mostly civilised party area. Being tired of PA-styled craft beers already back then, I still was able to find some interesting porters and fruit and spice based beer offerings. And even a kimchi-tasting one.

I still remember a Hawaii-styled hamburger with Belgian big fries as one of the best burgers I have ever tasted. The chilli-sausage later that night was proper German styled, but not extraordinary.

According to Lonely Planet, the area is still worth a visit.

You receive a call in the middle of the afternoon and the voice on the other end should be one you already know by now. “Good afternoon, Choi Minho.” It’s the same man who scouted you in Zombie Night and followed you through your audition. “I speak in the name of TRC, and, after long consideration, we decided to offer you a contract under our company.” He makes a short pause to make sure you’re still paying attention before proceeding. “If you’re interested please stop by the TRC building in Yongsangu until the 25th to officially sign as a trainee. I hope to hear again from you soon.”

he expects to hear the sailor moon theme song or one of the songs in the show when by the time the voice on the other end of the phone says i speak in the name of trc and he guesses it’s fitting with the rumors, right? in the name of trc, i punish you. but maybe that’s a bit too soon to joke about it. rumors really oughta be ignored anyway, even if he technically left sphere because of them. all jokes aside, minho feels unexpectedly numb when he hears the words, because it doesn’t feel real, doesn’t seem real. 

slowly, he’s realizing that each time he thinks he’s already past this, about to move on with another goal in life, and explore his options all over again, he goes running back to chasing the same dream. that’s only fitting too. after all, isn’t it the same way he was about mijoo? deciding he could move on and realizing he can’t. he really is a one-track type of guy in the end. 

“the 25th? ah, no way it can be the 27th huh?” although he has to admit he’d consider signing after too because of a certain comeback on the 27th but does he really have room to complain? “do i bring my t-rex friend this time?” he asks with a cheeky grin even though the call is essentially over. speaking of though... how is he gonna sneak in to try and surprise the people he knows there? maybe he’ll take a page out of the scout’s book again. spy mode on.
