The Revolution Will Not Be Aestheticized

Being Gen X is weird. Mine will be the last generation to remember a world without the internet and was also the first to wholly embrace it.

Gen X knows what life was like before social media...but has still mastered the art of passive-aggressively liking posts as a form of communication.

We're a small generation, but I'd argue we have a unique perspective and I want to point out something which I think is more obvious, more visible to Gen X, than it is to Millennials and Gen Z.:

Enjoying pop culture used to be something you did. Now, it helps define who you are.

I was obsessed, as a kid, with Marvel comics, Dr. Who, and Babylon 5. Friends had weekly get-togethers to watch the X-Files or The Simpsons. Liking pop culture wasn't unusual. You could like it passionately, obsessively even.

But it wasn’t your identity.

If you outgrew an interest, it didn’t seem like a personal transformation to you or to your friends. It was just...what you're really interested in right now. The stakes were low.

Today, it seems like your fandom is often your flag. It’s in your bio next to your gender identity, orientation and neurotype. (A couple of those are in mine, too).

I'm trying to say that there is a very real difference between being really into the music of Taylor Swift and being a Swiftie.

There's still plenty of discussionabout what we love, but now it helps defines who we are.

I might be a Little Monster and in the BTS Army, right? And a Whovian Cumberbitch. These are signifiers not of interest, but of identity.

That shift from consumption to identity may seem subtle, but it has profound consequences.

It turns preferences into moral positions.

If your fandom defines who you are, any critique of it feels like a critique of you. And if your fandom’s antagonist gets a redemption arc which displeases you? That’s not character growth, that’s betrayal. (You've seen people behave this way in fandoms. It's a parasocial relationship with fictional characters.)

Now take that operating system - tribal, emotional, morally binary - and plug it into political activism. What do you get?

You get the US "Pro-Palestinian" movement circa 2024-25.

To be clear: Gaza is a humanitarian catastrophe. Palestinians deserve dignity, safety, and justice.

Critiquing how Americans engage with this issue is not a dismissal of its urgency. It’s just asking whether our engagement is real...or if it is performative roleplay and treated like a fandom.

Because much of what’s happening on social media and college campuses doesn’t look like activism. It looks like fandom.

And not in a metaphorical sense. I mean literally.

Moral binarism:

Palestinians are coded as pure underdog heroes. Israelis are assigned the role of irredeemable villains. There's no space for Israeli trauma, Palestinian complexity, or the millions caught in-between. Just like fandom, nuance gets in the way of the story.

Costumes and catchphrases:

Keffiyehs are worn like people used to wear Hogwarts House scarves.

Slogans like "from the river to the sea" function not as political demands as much as they are ritual, social affirmations.

You chant them because they’re what you say to stay in good standing.

Canon enforcement:

Say the wrong thing (acknowledge Hamas's atrocities, quote an Israeli peace activist...) and you’re cast as a villain. Activist spaces now police ideological purity the same way fandoms used to (still do?) flame you for liking the wrong ship.

Emotional scripting:

TikToks from Gaza with moody filters and sad piano music mimic fan edits and commenters post, "I’m crying, I’m shaking," because that’s the expected affect. It's parasocial politics. And it's all about showing their feelings.

Lore and side quests:

Protestors debate which historical analogies are "correct" based on what's most satisfying. The create infographics that function like lore wikis, and design protest aesthetics with merch-tier detail. Some organizers even "brand" their encampments like pop-up installations.

This is fandom logic in political form: it's identity-driven, emotionally performative, virality-optimized, branded and monetized.

The problem is that Fandom has no endgame. Fandom is forever. There’s no "solving" Game of Thrones - you just keep angrily resenting that awful final season.

Politics needs resolution. If you apply the fandom model to real-world conflict, peace becomes anticlimactic. Moral ambiguity feels like betrayal. Ceasefires don’t trend on social media.

Look at how the "pro-Palestinian" movement won't condemn Hamas regardless of the people of Gaza marching en masse to demand Hamas leave Gaza.

When the identity matters more than the cause, the cause becomes a backdrop.

Such "activists" center their feelings of righteousness rather than centering the lives at stake.

Performative grief displaces material action.

Sharing content becomes the work.

Listening becomes optional.

Look at how Irish protestors embraced the term “Paddystinian" - blending diasporic solidarity with performative identity. Or consider how Peter Tatchell was arrested at a pro-Palestinian march for opposing both Israel and Hamas - and was immediately denounced online not for being wrong, but for deviating from the script.

This isn’t activism. It’s cosplay with real-world stakes.

Real political work is boring, frustrating, and morally dissonant. It demands strategic thinking, coalition-building, and compromise. It doesn’t fit neatly into a feed, and it rarely makes you feel emotionally whole, but it’s the only thing that changes anything.

If you’ve grown up in fandom, you’re not broken or unserious. You’re just swimming in the water you were raised in.

What they need to ask themselves, though, is: Are we trying to help, or are we trying to feel right?

Because the people on the ground don’t need you to wear your Guy Christensen kiffiyeh and recite the ideologically approved positions you don't understand. They don't need your fan art. They don't need you to harass Jews online.

They need peace, they need dialogue, and they need all of us to stop treating war like content.

Today in Conton City…

Nopatzu belongs to me while Fridged belongs to @airplaneear2

To explain Nopatzu’s lore a bit:

She’s a prev Mid Class U7 warrior that accidentally followed through a Time Patroller’s portal back to Conton City, saw too much, and was basically roped into being a time patroller

Nopatzu used to work under King Cold and a bit under Frieza as well. Hence why the “can I REALLY trust you?” air towards other of the Frieza Race/Icejins

Xeno Vegeta got assigned Nopatzu to essentially “civilize” her into the new conditions. Since he used to know the “old way” of saiyans, and he himself had to change away from that exact nature. He also trained her to increase her power since she had gone from one of stronger ones, to the weaker ones. Which did take a toll, and still bothers hers and eats away at her consciousness

She’s been a time patroller for a rather short time, only 6 months. Still mainly trains user Xeno Vegeta as she understands/relates to him the most. As well admires him the most (similiar to how Cabba, but in a more subtle way. In front of him she doesn’t show SQUAT tries to play cool and doesn’t want to let anyone know)

She can only go SSJ, which is still unmastered. Can also go to SSJ4 and is more mastered than SSJ due to her being an expert with the Oozaru/great ape transformation. She can only access SSJ4 via a special Senzu though

THE SPECIAL SENZU: Instead of healing and restoring stamina, essentially works like assisted rope rock climbing. Sometimes they may nudge you to get through a part you alone couldn’t otherwise, but it’s also your own doing to find a grip and stay there after the nudge

Nopatzu is also sent to aid Z-Broly missions quite often (her first mission was also a Z-Broly mission) due to her having a power level low enough to not rile up Z-Broly to become more powerful, and make it a bigger of an issue for the other Z-fighters to deal with. And resilient enough to survive the brutal beating. Essentially she is a meat shield and power battery to help the other Z-fighters win—

She absolute despises the hell outta Z-Broly, and is also traumatized to an extent 😭

PRESSURE OC MEGA POST

TW: Slight body horror

Heya!! I wanted to do a big post dump of my Pressure OC! I've drawn (She/her) a bunch but only really shared her with my friends and since my Pressure are gets received fairly well on Tumblr I thought I'd post

-DESIGN-

Firstly here are some references for her. Her name is Leah Kaiwi (Z-471) and she was also experimented on in the program to alter humans to grow gills. Her experiments were specifically to help humans survive in intense-pressure climates. I designed her in mind to have been injected with Peacock Mantis Shrimp, Snail Fish, Spider Crab, and Dinoflagellates DNA. In her mutation Leah lost her arms, leading her to rely on the use of her very powerful Mantis Shrimp arms to hunt for food and sate her instincts.

She is written to have fully mutated after the events of the containment breach and she was assigned by Urbanshade to retrieve the crystal from the inside during the lockdown. Throughout her mission she eventually felt the full side effects of the experiments and transformed into her monster form, undergoing irreversible amounts of brain damage, and gaining monstrous instincts before abandoning her original task. This transformation led Urbanshade to deem Leah as useless to the mission, marking her for death.

I like to think that game mechanics-wise, Z-471 (or Mantis), acts similar to a node entity with a unique ability like Pandemonium. Expendables can hide in lockers to avoid her but she would use her powerful dactyls to damage the locker. Players can escape from the locker but it would be deemed as unusable for future usage.

AFFILIATIONS

I'm guilty of having a soft spot for Sebastian but this is NOT a self ship! Leah's relationship with Sebastian is a begrudgingly accepted mutual alliance and slight friendship. She's more of an idiot dog than a friend to Sebastian. Leah isn't very smart due to the disfiguring of her body from Urbanshade's experimentations so her job is to wander the Blacksite and help Sebastian find items to trade to expendables for data.

Sebastian promised to her that she and pAInter will be able to escape with him if they help but he isn't even 100% sure if it'll be possible for them to join in the long run. Sebastian views Leah as extremely stupid and gullible which helps him convince her to aid in his escape. He often times makes fun of her and insults her but sometimes he is reminded of how strong Leah is so Sebastian makes sure not to be TOO mean. Above is some interaction doodles that I have done between the two of them and an unfinished GIF of Sebastian realizing that he shouldn't mess with Leah too much.

Crowley shows up at the bookshop for lunch with Aziraphale still dressed in the disguise he used on his last assignment. The intriguing change in clothing and accent, along with a mysterious violin case, forces Aziraphale to remind himself that he shouldn't be feeling these sorts of urges toward a demon. Then, Crowley plays an old love song and Aziraphale loses his inner battle.

Two-shot. Eventually explicit in the upcoming chapter 2.

“Oh, I am sorry that we didn’t have what you were looking for today. It really is such a shame.” A. Z. Fell, as the name of the bookshop identified him, ushered a young woman towards the exit. He’d been open for business this morning, and was unpleasantly surprised by the amount of foot traffic that had wandered in. As the noon hour approached, though, he was determined to close. He was running out of excuses to prevent the actual sale of any books. More importantly, he was expecting a certain demon for lunch today.

“But, I think I see…” The woman pointed to a shelf just over Aziraphale’s shoulder.

“Yes, quite a shame. Perhaps Waterstones would carry something by that particular author? I should check there if I were you.” The angel reached past the would-be customer and placed a hand on the shop’s door. He intended to open it in order to eject her out onto the street. Before he could turn the handle, it swung outward without his help.

“Ma’am.”

Aziraphale froze, his hand resting on the empty spot in space where the handle had been. Crowley stood on the pavement, holding the door open for the confused woman. His free hand was lifted to pinch the brim of a hat, as if he were going to doff it in deference to her presence. However, this was not the suave felt fedora of decades past. Aziraphale felt his mouth fall open in shock as he registered the ratty, black cap. The fabric was faded from the sun, and the single extended bill in the front featured frayed patches along the edge. Aziraphale struggled to identify the style. Wasn’t it what the Americans wore as part of a uniform for their sport? What did they call it? Based-ball?

Below the hat, Crowley wore sunglasses unlike Aziraphale had ever seen on him. The lenses were a red, reflective material. They were shaped like elongated, curved rectangles with rounded corners. The top edges slotted into a single line of black plastic that wrapped around his face from one ear to the next. They perched on his sun-touched nose above a polite, if not somewhat mischievous, smile. Crowley waited patiently while the woman looked from the shocked shopkeeper to the grinning man, decided that she’d had enough weirdness for the day, and simply walked away. Crowley looked pleased with himself, released the hat brim, and turned to enter the bookstore. He stopped short at Aziraphale’s still outstretched hand.

“You gonna invite me in, angel? Or would you rather I stand here with the door open, lettin’ in flies?” The tone of his voice was amused, maybe even dusted with affection. But, Aziraphale’s brain scrambled to catch up with what he was seeing - and hearing. Gone was Crowley’s usual cadence. Instead, his voice was softer and slower. The angel tried to come up with a descriptor for the drawn-out vowels and dropped consonants that peppered through Crowley’s request to enter the bookshop. Ah, yes. The word finally surfaced in Aziraphale’s mind: drawl .

Aziraphale quickly lowered his hand and, embarrassed at being caught staring, stepped back from the doorway. Crowley brushed past him with a courteous nod and walked through to the dimly lit interior of the book shop. When he passed, heat radiated off his body. It felt like Crowley had stepped out of a sauna. There was an unusual scent, too. Pine, perhaps? And damp earth, like a forest just after a summer rain. Then, as the demon moved into the interior, the angel got a better look at the rest of his uncharacteristic outfit.

Crowley was wearing a shirt, but just barely. He had tucked a black cotton tee into the waistband of dark denim trousers. That wasn’t so unusual. But, this particular shirt had its sleeves cut away to reveal Crowley’s lean upper arms. And, for about three-quarters of the remaining length of the garment, several inches of fabric had been removed on either side of the seams that were supposed to hold the shirt together. It did eventually rejoin itself just above the demon’s belt. Before that point, though, Aziraphale had a clear view of the sides of Crowley’s torso. Aziraphale couldn’t help but notice how the demon’s muscles moved as he sauntered his way across the bookshop.

Aziraphale also couldn’t help but notice a warm flush start to radiate up from his own collar at the view. He felt his face scrunch up in frustration at the reaction. The angel had seen much more of the demon in the past. Roman baths, for instance, left little to the imagination. Why was his corporation reacting this way now?

A violin case was slung over Crowley’s left shoulder by a woven black and red strap. The demon’s left hand was raised to that shoulder and his thumb tucked under the strap to keep it in place. When he reached the counter that held Aziraphale’s cash register, though, he made a shrugging motion to lift the strap. He lowered the case to the ground and leaned it against the hip-high piece of furniture. The slight bend forward caused the not-quite-a-shirt to fall open towards the front. The previous view of side torso broadened to include a shadowed glimpse of Crowley's abs and chest. Aziraphale briefly caught sight of a nipple, and the flush started to creep down from the collar, as well as up.

Aziraphale suddenly needed to be looking anywhere other than Crowley’s bare skin, so his eyes followed the movement of the case to the floor. They stopped at Crowley’s feet. His normal urban-chic, all black boots were replaced with something else. Peeking out from underneath the legs of his jeans were the pointed tips of a different style of boot. These featured a textured pattern of white, gray, and black snakeskin scales. The soles were dark leather, and the blocky heels a bit taller than what Crowley normally wore. And they had, to Aziraphale’s horror, left little clumps of vibrant orange-red mud wherever Crowley stepped. That broke whatever spell Crowley’s scandalously altered shirt held over the angel. He clicked his tongue in disappointment over the mess.

“Crowley, what on earth are you wearing? And why are you tracking dirt all over the shop?” Crowley straightened from setting down the case and turned to face Aziraphale. He tucked both of his thumbs into his belt, framing an oversized silver buckle in the shape of a snake’s head. Aziraphale noticed that the eyes flashed red, as if they were inset with rubies.

“I was finishin’ up a Temptation down in Georgia when I realized I was gonna be late for lunch. I had to take a shortcut through the office to get back in time, and it was just easier to stay in my work clothes. Less likely to get snagged for another assignment if’n I looked like I were still on the clock, ya know?” Aziraphale’s brow crinkled in confusion at the explanation.

“Georgia? Well, I guess local fashions have changed since I was in that area of Europe. And, I certainly don’t remember…” He waved vaguely at the dusty tracks. It was Crowley’s turn to show his confusion before giving a laugh of realization.

“Naw, not that Georgia. Georgia the state. As in the united ones ‘cross the pond?” Aziraphale racked his brain to think of anything he might know about the place.

“You mean the penal colony? That sounds quite dangerous." Aziraphale's eyes widened, as if he'd had an alarming thought. He walked toward Crowley in small, quick steps. The front door closed itself, unnoticed by the angel. "Did you run into any ruffians?” Crowley smiled his amusement at the question.

“It’s been a while since the monarchy shipped debtors off to the New World, but that’s the place. And, nope. No ruffians. It was a solo assignment, mostly. Real traditional-like, too. A one-on-one challenge at the crossroads under a full moon.” Crowley waved his hands in a spooky motion to indicate the mood. Aziraphale refused to believe that the flip-flop he felt in his belly was jealousy. So what if Crowley had been meeting some human alone under the stars. It was purely for work. Right?

“That’s where the red clay came from.” Crowley continued, apparently unaware of Aziraphale’s inner dialogue. “Out in the county, they don’t pave the roads. I forgot that it sticks to shoes like peanut butter to the roof of a dog’s mouth.” He snapped his fingers and the mud disappeared. “There. Better?” The entry rug was no longer stained, and Crowley seemed to be waiting for a response. So, Aziraphale gestured to the black case.

“I didn’t know you played the violin.”

“I ain’t never told you about that?” Aziraphale mentally worked his way through the archaic contraction and double negative while Crowley continued. “Hell’s been using the violin for Temptations since … well, shoot. Since long before Paganini.” The angel rolled his eyes at the mention of the nineteenth century musician.

“I should have known those rumors were about you. I suppose you were in the process of creating another demonically-influenced virtuoso?” To his surprise, Crowley shook his head.

“Some upstart fiddler’s been goin’ around braggin’ about ‘bein’ the best there’s ever been.”Head Office got wind of his pride. Since I done such a bang-up job on ol’ Nicky,'' Crowley grumbled at Aziraphale’s look of disbelief. He corrected himself. “Since I reported doin’ a good job with Niccolò, they sent me to tempt this new Bubba. I showed up with a fiddle made of pure gold, and got him to bet that he could outplay me. He wins, he gets the fiddle. I win, Hell gets his soul.” Crowley half-shrugged. “Standard procedure. That’s why I’m in this get-up.” He glanced down at his outfit and plucked at his shirt. “I had to dress like a local. Sound like one, too. There’d’ve been no way he’d agree to any sort-a deal with some highfalutin city slicker.”

Aziraphale thought he should feel disapproval at the whole idea. Instead, all he could think about was the image of Crowley standing on a rural dirt road, his fair skin aglow with moonlight. He wondered what the music sounded like in the quiet of the night. He wondered if the human appreciated how fluid and graceful Crowley’s movements must have been as he drew his bow across the strings of the golden instrument. Suddenly, he wanted nothing more than to hear Crowley play the violin. In the bookshop. Right now.

“Well, it appears as if Hell now has his soul. He must not have been as skilled as he thought.” Aziraphale gestured at the unopened case, still propped against the counter. “Perhaps you ought to play a sample of your winning piece?” He watched Crowley’s eyebrows rise above his glasses in surprise. “You know, for um, research? So that I might warn future violinists about what they’ll encounter if they engage in similar unwise braggadocio?” An amused huff and a half-smile told Aziraphale that Crowley didn’t believe his excuse.

“Oh, the case? It’s empty. Turns out, the young buck really did have the talent. Even when I summoned the Erics as backup, I couldn’t do better. So I gave him the fiddle, fair and square. I just kept the case so’s folks who spotted me downstairs would think I was still on the job.” The disappointment Aziraphale felt must have shown on his face. Crowley’s amused expression faded. Instead, he seemed to hold a brief inner battle over what he was about to say next.

“Look, I cain’t just give away my best Temptation tunes to an agent of Heaven. If,” Crowley pointed to the floor, “found out I’d be in a heap o’ trouble.”

“Yes. Of course, I quite understa-” Aziraphale didn’t get a chance to finish. When Crowley lifted the hand he’d just used to point, he snapped his fingers. Aziraphale heard the quiet resonance of a miracle, and the case shifted as if its weight had just changed. Crowley retrieved it and set it on top of the books scattered across the surface of the counter. He flipped open the latches and lifted the lid. Resting in a bed of red velvet was a violin of rich, brown wood. A strung bow was also secured within.

“I’ll play you a little somethin’ I picked up the last time I was in that part of the world, though.

The Photograph Always Lies

For assignment 1: The Photograph Always Lies, we were able to explore and learn the ideas of image manipulation and the true story of post photography. For me, image manipulation is not fake or entirely negative. It could be viewed as storytelling from one or many different perspectives.  Image manipulation could be dangerous if an individual or organization uses it incorrectly, to make up lies, or try to fake a situation.

My manipulated images reflect the growing phone addiction among the new generation and how it has caused the reading habit to be ignored. Growing up, I would sit on the top of my clothes, and read for hours. I can finish a whole book in a day or two. Fast forward to today, me and many others in my generation could not even sit through a 30 second or 1 minute Tik Tok video. We watch everything at 2x speed. The statistic never lies, according to a research survey which was conducted in 2015 by Microsoft, that the average attention span of Gen Z individuals was only about eight seconds.  

I used three images to convey this concept. The first image shows a bookshelf placed outside a local church—a symbol of knowledge, reflection, and introspection that is now being neglected. Books, once a source of wisdom and a way to connect deeply with oneself and the world, are now left unnoticed, collecting dust outside where they were once cherished. The second image is a hand holding a Iphone with the selfie camera being one, this is where I can present about the phone addiction issue running in this new generation. The third and final image I used, it’s an image I picked first. The main role of it is to create some sort of texture on top of my image. I use this as one of my surreal elements as “Surreal images tend to be dreamlike and tap into people's unconscious,” says Tryforos. The texture of this image will be my dreamlike element. Together raise a question: Have we forgotten the richness of reading in favor of a digital quick fix?

For the resubmission, my art model influence remains as Dora Maar, as her influence helped to shape the conceptual approach to this assignment, even in the first or second attempt. This is because Maar's art frequently merges reality with surrealism, revealing hidden truths about the world. Her use of photomontage and editing encouraged me to approach my project in a similar way, allowing me to utilize visual narrative to investigate issues of urban decline and public accountability.  

This journey has been both challenging and rewarding, equipping me with new skills and insights that I will carry forward in my artistic endeavors. To me, photography is always about storytelling, it’s just this way or the other. Last but not least, even though I have to resubmit this assignment, it will forever be a transforming experience which enabled me to understand image manipulation and surrealism photography.

A. COMPUTING NEW VARIABLES USING "COMPUTE"

Remember that a variable is the output of one measurement (or experiment) on different subjects (called cases). So "height" or "weight" or "gender" or "score obtained on some test" or "native tongue" or "reaction time" are all variables. It is, however, often necessary to derive new variables based on the existing ones, such as the sum of the scores obtained on two different tests by each subject, the ratio of the correct sentences and of all sentences for each subject, or transforming a score into a grade. Recoding, to be introduced in the next section of this lab, is also a kind of variable transformation.

Now we take an example that should help us also better understand the concept of standard deviation (SD). SD is sometimes compared to the mean of the (absolute value of the) deviations. The latter can also be calculated with SPSS. Yet, since it is not a standard measure, we have to go through the steps of the calculation ourselves. First, we shall introduce a new variable based on MLU, which corresponds to the distance of each data point from the mean (called the deviation of each data point). Then, the mean of this second variable can be simply calculated using SPSS.

Another example is the recoding of nominal values to numbers: Even though it is good practice to use meaningful coding systems (strings such as "m" and "f" for gender, or "eur", "ame", "afr", "asi" and "aus" for continents of origin), some statistical packages (including SPSS) allow fewer manipulations and analyzes for data encoded thus. Therefore, we may prefer to recode "m" as "1" and "f" as "2", etc. – keeping always in mind that the numerical values should not be seen as real numbers (no order between them, and no arithmetical manipulations).

We are now interested in knowing how many long MLU's there are in the text. We define an MLU as "long" if it contains more than six words. In the present case, a sample of 20 utterances, you probably would not use SPSS, but in the case of 1000 utterances the story becomes quite different... Therefore, we are going to introduce a new variable LONG_MLU derived from MLU: LONG_MLU is 0 if the MLU is 6 or less, and 1 otherwise. The process of changing the values of a variable in this manner is called recoding, which is especially useful in the case of questionnaires.

> Create a new variable LONG_MLU from the variable MLU that is 1 for original ("old") values greater than 6, and 0 else. Hint: "Transform", "Recode". Always choose "Into Different Variables", otherwise you lose your original data, and you won't be able to check your computations. Copy MLU to the window, and enter the name LONG_MLU as Output Variable. Click on "Change" to have this name in the window. Afterward, use "Old and New Values" to provide the original and the corresponding recoded values: enter an old and a corresponding new value, click on "Add", and repeat this procedure for all values. If the formula is okay in the window, click on "Continue", then on "OK".

* 3. Create a histogram of LONG_MLU, and copy it to your report.

> For the next task, open a new data file, and close the old data file.

C. IMPORTING (READING) DATA FROM A TEXT FILE

The subjects of an experiment read sentences on the screen of a computer, word by word. Each time the subject has read the word he or she presses a key. The previous word disappears and the next one becomes visible. The time elapsed between pressing the keys is the time needed by the subject to read the word.

The following values are the time in milliseconds needed to read 24 words (Source: Edith Kaan and Laurie Stowe, Developing an Experiment, 1995. Techniques and Design, Klapper vakgroep Taalwetenschappen, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen):

> Place your mouse above the link and click on the right button. Choose 'Save Link As... '. > Save this file in your own SPSS-lab folder (directory). > Have a look at the structure of this file: What does it contain? How is it organized? For instance, are values delimited by some special character, such as by a space, or each value is in a new line? Does the file contain information describing the content of the file (name of the variable(s), description, source of the data, etc.)? > Import this file to SPSS using "File", "Read Text Data". Find the text file just being saved and open it.

You are now offered the Text Import Wizard of SPSS, which is going to help you open the file.

> Answer the questions of Text Import Wizard. Hints: This text file does not have a Predefined Format. That is, the variables are not found in a specific column, but the values are simply delimited by a space. The file does not contain any variable name. Each case consists of a single observation (a single value). Therefore, you have to choose 'A specific number of variables represents a case' and set it to 1.

If you wish, you can also define the name of the variable, but you can do that also later.

> Use the name RDT for the variable. Then, go to "Variable view" and use the field "label" to explain what the abbreviation RDT stands for: "reading time per word". Observe that you will be shown the label and not the variable name in different reports returned by SPSS.

If the data import is successful, you have a variable (column) with 24 numbers.

> Set in the Variable View the number of decimals for this variable to 0 (as the reading time has been measured with the precision of 1 msec, so the values are always integer).

> Save these data as a usual data file, that is, in the native SPSS format .sav.

D. LOCATING OUTLIERS USING A BOXPLOT.

* 4. Create a histogram including a Normal curve, as well as a boxplot of RDT. Copy it to your report. * 5. You can find two outliers among your data. Which are they, and what kind of explanation(s) could you provide to explain them? * 6. In case you decide to remove these cases from your data set, do you expect the mean or the standard deviation to change more? Why?

> Remove these cases from your data file by selecting the corresponding rows (click on the gray case number on the left), and then press the DELETE key.

> Calculate the mean and the SD again by creating a new histogram.

* 7. What can you observe, as compared to your previous results?

From now onward we shall work on these data with the outliers being removed.

E. CALCULATING A CONFIDENCE INTERVAL FOR THE MEAN

* 8. You know the size of the sample, and you know its standard deviation. What is the standard error, then? Calculate it both by hand (give details of your calculation in the report) and let SPSS calculate it for you. Are the two values the same? Hint: "Analyze", "Descriptive Statistics", "Frequencies". Choose "Statistics" and SE. Do not forget to turn off "Display Frequency Table".

Now we turn to Table D of Moore and McCabe. Having calculated the standard error, let us find the confidence interval for the mean of the variable RDT. Let us set the confidence level to C = 95%.

> Determine the degree of freedom (df) of the sample. > Use Table D to determine the z* and the t* corresponding to the level of confidence C.

* 9. Determine the confidence interval for the mean of the sample using the Student-t-statistic. Provide details of your calculations in your report. * 10. What is the meaning of this confidence interval? * 11. Why have we used the t-statistic and not the z-statistic? * 12. Suppose we know that the population standard deviation happens to be the same as the standard deviation of the sample. Determine the confidence interval using the z-statistic for this case.

* 13. Now have the confidence interval calculated for you by SPSS. Copy the values returned by SPSS to your report. Is it different from your calculations? Hint: "Analyze", "Compare Means", "One Sample T-test".

The last two columns of the table present the lower bound and higher bound of the confidence interval as a difference from the test value. If you set the test value to 0, then the last two columns will give you simply the bounds of the confidence interval. If, however, you set the test value to the sample mean, then the last two columns will show you how much you have to add to, and detract from the sample mean to find the confidence interval, in which the population mean lies with the given confidence level.

In "Options" you can set the confidence level.

> Repeat the procedure of having SPSS compute the confidence interval with a t-test, but this time with a confidence level of 99%.

* 14. Add again to your report the higher and lower values between which the population mean must lie. Why and how is this confidence interval different from the previously calculated one?

F. TESTING A HYPOTHESIS ON POPULATION MEANS USING A T-TEST.

Suppose there are two competing theories about reading. They associate reading with two different neural mechanisms and therefore they have two different predictions about reading speed of the particular words employed in this experiment. Theory FRT ("fast reading theory") predicts that the average time needed to read these words is at most 440 msec, whereas theory SRT ("slow reading theory") predicts a reading time of at least 505 msec (always including the time needed to press the button).

Are your data able to refute or corroborate any of these theories at a significance level of alpha = 5%? A hint: use the above theories as null hypotheses; so you ask whether you can refute them, or whether your data are consistent with them (hence, they corroborate them). Please provide your calculations both by hand, and using SPSS.

* 15. In each of the two cases, what is the null hypothesis exactly, and what is the alternative hypothesis? (In words/one full sentence, please.) * 16. Are you using a one-sided or a two-sided test? * 17. Perform the test for both cases by hand, and describe the steps of your calculation. * 18. Let SPSS calculate the test for you and copy the results. * 19. What is the meaning of the P-value in each of the two cases? (Hint: the probability of exactly what is it?) Please write one full sentence for each case in your report. * 20. For each case, provide the key sentence summarizing the results of the statistical analysis, as it is done in scientific papers. That is, either "Based on our data, we can reject the null-hypothesis at a significance level alpha = 0.05, that is, we can conclude that [the alternative hypothesis in words] is true (t = ..., df = ..., P = ...)" or "our data do not provide sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis, that is, to conclude that...".
