I am an admirer of the artist Caspar David Friedrich. He just managed to capture atmosphere so very nicely. This is his "Zwei Männer in Betrachtung des Mondes"
Tumblr media
Some people know this one. But less known is that CDFriedrich redrew the piece 4 years later, and whilst I am aware that was in no way Caspars intend: I am happy for her successful transition.

I found out few days ago in my polish class that what we called romantic (e. g. flowers, red hearts, a lot of emotions) is actually sentimental. What is real romantic like in a romanticism era aren't beautiful full of love paintings, but art full of darkness and horror etc. The paintings aren't light and colorful. They're dark and have dark colors.
What I really love about it is this difference. That the fact what was romantic those times isn't what we call romantic nowadays.
Here are some paintings to show you what I mean (I couldn't find good quality of the first two so I took a photo):
Tumblr media
'HMS Minotaur' by William Turner
Tumblr media
'The nightmare' by Henry Fuseli
Tumblr media
'Zwei Männer in Betrachtung des Mondes' by Caspar David Friedrich
I know that not every painting is in this style, but a fascination in horror, weirdness and fantasy was on of the main characteristics in romantisicm's art.

14, 18, 21 & 49 for the ask game!
14. What are some places where you feel most at home?
My home and Cars actually because they give me a sense of freedom and remind me of the amazing road trips I did! Also my friend's houses!
18. What's one historical event you would like to have witnessed?
The fall of the Berlin wall maybe. Or the moon landing.
(and if witnessed means just watching in some kind of ghost form then the big bang)
21. What's your favourite period in art history, your favourite famous work and/ or your favourite style of art?
This is all super hard because I don't really have favourites cause there are so many stunning works of art in all manner of styles out there!
Period in art history: Baroque and the Renaissance
Some of my favourite famous artworks are:
Caspar David Friedrich, Wanderer above the Sea of Fog, Zwei Männer in Betrachtung des Mondes
John William Waterhouse: Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysses, The Lady of Shalott
Frank Bernard Dicksee La belle dame sans merci
49. What's your favourite thing to do when it's raining?

Zwei Männer in Betrachtung des Mondes (Two Men Contemplating The Moon), 1819 | Caspar David Friedrich (German, 1774--1840) | Galerie Neue Meister / Albertinum, Dresden, Germany
The men in this painting have been identified as Friedrich, the painter himself, at right, and his friend and disciple August Heinrich (1794–1822). Fascination with the moon ran high among the German Romantics, who regarded the motif as an object of pious contemplation. This first version of one of Friedrich’s most famous compositions was painted during Heinrich's lifetime. The second and third were painted after Heinrich's death, respectively in circa 1824 and 1825-30. (Adapted from text on Wikimedia Commons)

hey! youre a fellow art historian, right? maybe you could help: im looking for 'iconic' images of tree roots. yes, thats a weirdly specific thing and the only painting i can come up with is 'Zwei Männer in Betrachtung des Mondes'. can you think of any others? thank you 🌹
I've been thinking about this for a while now and babe I'm so sorry, but I simply can't think of anything. The only thing that came to mind were Apollo&Daphne or maybe something by El Greco (for some reason?) but unfortunately...two misses. Although I'm still a little shocked that the feet/root moment is so neglected while we do have a lot of delicately intertwined finger-branches. Either way...sweetie, I'm so sorry!! I wish I could be of more help :(

“Abendlied” von Matthias Claudius (1740 - 1815)
Rezitation: Mathias Wieman (1902 - 1969)
Verschon uns, Gott! Mit Strafen, Und lass uns ruhig schlafen! Und unsern kranken Nachbarn auch!
