Grading each team's protected players list
First of all shoutout to my boss for canceling our usual Tuesday afternoon meeting so I can really dive into this
BOSTON FLEET: Aerin Frankel (G), Megan Keller (D), Alina Muller (F)
Obviously you want to protect your franchise goalie, and Keller is your 1D for a reason. I also get the logic between leaving Knight exposed in favor of a younger player, but if that's the route you're going, why not Bilka? They definitely see something in Muller that I don't, and that I haven't. Grade: B-.
MINNESOTA FROST: Kendall Coyne Schofield (F), Taylor Heise (F), Lee Stecklein (D)
Heise is a no-brainer. She's your 1OA, a strong center, and only 25 years old. Kendall is on the older and more expensive side, but at the same time, I'm not sure I'd rank another forward over her (besides Heise, who's already protected). What I do not understand is keeping Lee over Jaques or Thompson. I value everything Lee has done! But she's older, she's lost a step, and Thompson has been a game-breaker. Grade: C-.
MONTREAL VICTOIRE: Ann-Renee Desbiens (G), Marie-Philip Poulin (F), Laura Stacey (F)
Boring! I'm bored! We all knew these would be the three. They've contributed the most to the team the last two years, which should get the front office's alarm bells ringing, given that all three players are over 30. (Notably, the Victoire had the oldest goalie tandem in the league this past season, which is a big red flag considering how fast goalie performance drops off in your thirties.) Grade: B.
NEW YORK SIRENS: Sarah Fillier (F), Ella Shelton (D), Micah Zandee-Hart (D)
Genuinely, what in God's name are we doing here? You have a franchise 1C in Alex Carpenter and a franchise goalie in Schroeder, and you protect... neither of them. Both of the blueliners you're protecting have injury concerns. And, even though I knew what they were going to do, protecting Fillier's draft rights is fucking inane. She doesn't have a guaranteed contract! You might lose her for nothing anyway if you can't clear enough cap space for her! Grade: F-. See me after class.
OTTAWA CHARGE: Emily Clark (F), Gwyneth Philips (G), Ronja Savolainen (D)
Oh my God. GM Mike, do you follow me on Tumblr? Because this is exactly who I said I would protect if I were in your seat. Three players in their primes with term left on their contract. Clark gives you versatility at forward - she can fill a playmaking, checking, or shooting role, and she even played center in college. Gwyn, even before she singlehandedly carried the team to a finals, is a young goalie on a cheap deal. And Ronja's been a beast on both sides of the ice. I'll forgive you for last year's draft solely on this. Now please take Casey OB in a few weeks. Grade: A+. Suspension revoked.
TORONTO SCEPTRES: Renata Fast (D), Blayre Turnbull (F), Daryl Watts (F)
... Blayre? Okay, wait. Let's rewind. Daryl - good choice. Insanely talented. Presumably (based on comments she's made) on a sub-market contract due to the cap. Fast - I think she's overrated, but the people making the big bucks rate her very highly, and she would definitely get yoinked if you didn't tag her. But ... Blayre? Are her 19 points in two full seasons really more valuable than what Nurse and Maltais give you? You have so much offensive talent and picked ... the checking 3C. Oh... okay then. Grade: C.

The top post on my blog this month is about the shortcomings of revolution as praxis and it's very funny to see Americans go "oh so it's okay when the Founding Fathers do it, but when I..." and some debate back like "but they had the advantage of all the British who disagreed with them going back to Britain, so..."
😂 Buddies. The USA's revolution is remembered as a "good one" because a) it was performed by a colonial elite already used to all the tasks of self-governance, b) it occurred during a rare and uncharacteristic moment of harmony between the major powers of Europe except for Britain, who cared more in that moment for dunking on their mutual enemy than worrying about this dangerous democracy experiment, and c) over two centuries of adoring hagiography have committed to making Americans to seeing the founding of their country as an inspiring moral pageant, not an event full of genocide and war crimes.
I no longer think it's super cool that I have ancestors who fled to Canada as Empire Loyalists in the 1770s, because I think the Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire, much like its archnemesis-twin Daughters of the American Revolution, is the kind of elitist social club based on ancestry that we do not need more of in this world. All the same, my grandmother did do the work to establish our family's eligibility to join it, and those are the ancestors who showed up as founding members of Hartford, Connecticut a century and some before they had to flee to Canada as refugees. (I don't pity them extensively, since they were still white colonialist settlers on stolen land in a slave society and did get rewarded with land in Canada for their pains. Not that they were Toronto-area Family Compact people for their pains. And it's still true that they risked public humiliation and torture, perhaps actual execution, if they had stayed, and had to give up their whole lives and businesses to move.)
Buuut that's a conversation that's awkward on the Left and the Right 🙃

Ppbthhh im too emotionally tired and busy to engage in a discussion about it but I just saw a thing saying sex-based oppression isn't real and that it's a terf concept, bc sex isn't real
Which like.. isn't how that works
Race isn't real, racism is real
Sex isnt real, sexism is real
Sex based oppression exists BECAUSE there is this flawed idea that there are 2 definable sexes, each with their own totally separate characteristics, and that one of these sexes a) exists b) is more powerful or better than the others c) the "other" sex is weaker and flawed
Like, that doesn't mean "everyone with a penis has a special penis privilege" nor does it mean "everyone who was assigned male at birth has a special AMAB privilege". Cause that's not true. Many people are oppressed specifically BECAUSE they were amab, or because they have a penis, (those are not the same thing!), and they don't fit into societal expectations of what that should mean (that everyone amab was born with a penis and will always have a penis, that they're the only people to have penises, that they must be men, that there must be no sex ambiguity, that the "dominant" hormone in their body is testosterone, that they not only are men but ACT like appropriately men by being heterosexual and strong and wearing men's clothes and doing a man's profession and not seeming feminine and having manly interests etc.)
Like.. sexism is real. It's not a terf concept to say sexism exists. It's not transphobic or intersexist to say sexism exists. Because it does and it's a major force of oppression.
And like one of the things the post mentioned was that the idea of sex based oppression is wrong is because it assumes people have shared experiences solely because of sex.
Which like, a) no it doesnt, that's literally the reason intersectionality exists, to describe how people who share one trait (eg sex) have different experiences that relate to that trait bc of having other traits b) yeah, that's like, one of the issues the modern and intersectional theories of sexism, the patriarchy, queer theory, and feminism as a whole are meant to address. That there exists a thing called sex and people are put into categories of it and that gender is a binary system solely based on sex. There is the belief that there are shared experiences based solely on sex, and pointing out that belief is wrong doesn't mean that everyone in the world goes "oh okay my bad", it means we need to engage with that idea. Like how race doesn't exist except for as a social construct, but racism sure does, and we can't address racism without acknowledging that people think there is a similarity between like a black man born in Toronto and a black man born into a foraging society in sub saharan Africa, a similarity based solely on appearance, that means they are more similar than the toronto guy is to his indigenous best friend he grew up with, but that regardless if the African man goes to Toronto he will experience racism because he's black. We have to engage with cultural constructions in order to challenge and dismantle them, and recognise that they do exist AS CULTURAL CONSTRUCTIONS (on mobile so I can't just put that in italics or it'll make the whole thing italic) even if they don't exist in some sort of "biological reality" and those constructions don't recognise the truth of the situation.
But like I'm just. So tired. I can type that out but I can't type out good replies or read more of what ppl say with a clear mind. Like I managed to say all that but I gotta go zone out to youtube videos for several hours now and stress about how i should be using that time for grad school stuff

No. 43 - Porter Airlines
I consider myself very lucky to live near enough to an airport, located directly beneath one of the main departure paths, that I can regularly see airplanes flying overhead on their way off to wherever. Depending on the plane, they can pass over my house as low as 3,000 feet! ...which is still way too high for my phone's camera! So while I can see the plane decently, even make out details of the livery, what my camera sees is...this.
Okay, so my planespotting hobby mostly consists of literally spotting them (I am very good at this part! It's the photography that I struggle with!) because I'm unable to shell out for a telephoto lens, but thanks to the magic of flight tracking software I'm able to identify the exact airplane that this is, rather than being forced to base my review off this crunchy "photograph".
So, I'd like to introduce you all to our subject for today, C-GLQR! And, by extension, Porter Airlines - requested by @fungaloids, plus an anon.
First flown in February of 2009 and delivered in December of the same year, C-GLQR has served her entire fourteen-year career with Porter Airlines. She's actually only slightly younger than the airline itself. Porter was founded in 2006, featuring executives who formerly served in similarly high positions in Canadian regional airlines Air Ontario and Canada 3000, American Airlines, and...apparently the former US ambassador to Canada for some reason. They're about as large as you can get while still more or less being a regional airline, and they fly a fleet I'd call medium-sized of Embraer E195-E2 jets and an even larger number of Bombardier Dash 8-Q400 turboprop planes, like the pictured C-GLQR, out of their hub in Toronto.
One interesting thing about Porter (inconsistently stylized as lowercase-p porter, but it lacks the clear intent of something like condor so I'm not going as far as to write it that way myself) is said hub. See, when I say Toronto, you probably think of the worst airport in the entire world, Toronto Lester B. Pearson International Airport. Thankfully for Porter's customers they do not have to go to the labyrinth of human misery which is Toronto Pearson, and are instead corralled into Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, colloquially known as Toronto Island Airport, potentially because it's changed its name twice and the local population got sick of remembering what it's calling itself now.
image: DXR
The 'island' designator is quite literal. This is a teeny tiny airport, just barely large enough to land the Q400 and definitely too small to land jets. The fact that Porter flies to Chicago-Midway, Washington-Dulles, and Boston-Logan is a testament to the Q400's absolutely wild range rather than an indication that this tiny scrap of land is in any meaningful way an international airport. It has two runways and both are shorter than the ones at the smallest airport I've ever flown into that had an actual terminal, Vieques. I'm surprised they can operate a Q400 there. In fact, they can't - they had to pick a seat configuration smaller than the standard in order to be able to use the runways at Billy Bishop. (Incidentally, this means their seats have a more generous pitch, so I suppose that's a point for them.)
So why would they want to put the biggest passenger turboprop in service in the West onto this tiny airstrip? Well, Porter's...reason for existing, so it seems, is to force the Toronto Port Authority to expand the airport and build a bridge to the mainland despite the fact that nobody who lives in the area wants this. Hilariously, they have been entirely unsuccessful in this venture and now operate a second hub in Pearson. That's where they put the jets - after all, if you tried to land an E195-E2 at Toronto Island you would have a very wet plane and some very mad passengers on your hands very quickly.
youtube
I mean, to be fair, getting to not go to Pearson is a selling point.
I don't have any other place to put this but they have an adorable raccoon mascot named Mr. Porter. I'm not sure why a raccoon, but I like him. He doesn't appear on the livery at all - heaven forbid we do something interesting - but he's there and he's cute. I do have to point out, though, that this is one of the worst names for SEO I've seen in a while, given Mr. Porter is the name of the men's department of extremely popular luxury fashion outlet shop Net-a-Porter.
I think raccoons could be a pretty nice source of inspiration for a livery, what with their colorblocking and stripes. You could even make the planes' engine cowlings look like weirdly human little hands. I would hate that, but I would respect it! Instead Porter has taken the approach of making the plane mostly white. Revolutionary for sure.
I'll begin with the good and say that I really like this grey underside with its little outlines - I think this is an absolutely brilliant design for the Dash 8. Unlike the ATR series, which I've talked about a fair few times before on this blog, the Q400 is about as angular as a plane can get. I've never touched on that shape before, but I've discussed how carriers, though I'm sure it's by accident and they never consider this, work with the shape of the ATR to good effect. The curvaceousness of the ventral fairing on the ATR is complemented by long swoops like the ones used by Azul, IndiGo, and Air Astra. The Q400, in contrast, stores its landing gear in the engine cowlings, allowing for a very flat belly and uninterrupted fuselage that looks best with sharp long lines and blocky geometric shapes. If this livery had any other details, this would be such a nice touch - they even hammer the point in with the same design on the bottom of the cowlings.
Unfortunately, it's so light-colored that it's difficult to notice. You could mistake it for shadows settling on natural grooves in the airframe if you didn't know what the bottom of a Q400 is supposed to look like, and it isn't as if you can see it when the plane is parked.
You may well not see the wordmark, either. While the sans-serif font chosen is almost gratingly boring it is at least not hideous, but it's located in such an out-of-the-way location it almost feels like they're ashamed of it. It's so needlessly far back and low-sitting that the wing blocks it from half the possible angles, and it's not like it's accentuated in any way. You could so easily miss it. This wordmark is honestly Lufthansa-tier.
Another thing I don't like is the use of the tail. It's blocked out very Detached Tail Syndrome style, refusing to engage with the large block leading from it to the fuselage. I would understand, though not approve, if this was because they didn't want to redesign the balance of the tail when applying the livery to a new style of plane, but the Q400 is what they started with! The livery was designed for this plane and it seems to want you to just not notice this significant chunk of fuselage! It makes the whole airframe look so desolate and empty. The kindest thing I can say for it is that it looks lazy, but really it looks more unfinished. I just struggle to understand why these choices were made, in all honesty. Surely this isn't the best you can do.
Right, right, okay. There's something I've been dancing around on purpose and I think it's obvious what it is. I just wanted to get in an entire review first because there's sort of no going back once I've mentioned it. Everything I said before, while very important, is subordinate to this one...utterly perplexing choice which turns failure to infamy.

¶ … nursing -- caring, empathy and ethics. The author (Lachman, 2012) uses numerous examples, each of which show the positive impacts of caring. Along with examples of ethical decisions that must be made, and with theories on caring and empathy put forward by scholars, the paper examines morality, competence, and the "reciprocal" relationships between nurses and their patients. That is, caring for a patient is reciprocal because if the needs of the patient are met, there is reciprocity -- the giving of care and the receiving and acknowledgement of that care giving. Summary of Key Points On page 113 Lachman references several leading theorists and scholars that have provided important research and results on nursing ethics and the caring concepts alluded to in the Introduction. Dr. Jean Watson has a caring theory (112) that has three main components: a) carative factors; b) the "transpersonal caring relationship"; and c) the "caring occasion/caring moment." As to the carative factors, Watson explains that this involves the development and sustainability of an "authentic…helping-trusting…caring relationship," which sounds very obvious but it should lead to a "connection with deeper spirit of self" involved in the relationship (Lachman, 112). In the second element of Watson's strategy, the transpersonal caring relationship, this entails a "moral commitment" the nurse must make to connect with the patient; and the third component, the "caring occasion/caring moment" is what it sounds like -- that space and time during which the nurse bonds with the patient and caring takes place (Lachman, 112). Also, Joan C. Toronto, an author and recognized expert on nursing and the caring concepts, has a big role in this paper. In 1993 Toronto defined care -- an important point -- as a "species activity" that entails anything and everything that relates to maintaining, continuing and repairing the "world" around us, to include "…our bodies, ourselves and our environment" (Lachman, 113). In other words, for a nurse part of his or her environment is the patient, and the patient's body, which must be cared for. Toronto's four phases of caring are important to this article: a) caring about; b) taking care of; c) caregiving; and d) care receiving (Lachman, 113). Those are redundant on the surface but she is talking about phases, not applications of caring. Perhaps more importantly in terms of key points, are Toronto's four elements of caring: a) attentiveness (a nurse steps away from his or her learning and "preference system" and steps into the patient's shoes, which is the true definition of empathy); b) responsibility (the Code of Ethics for Nurses -- according to the American Nurses Association -- asserts that all nurses are responsible for patients under their care so there can be "no ambiguity" at all in that regard); c) competence (this means managing patients based on skills learned -- being efficient and accurate in caregiving -- but it also means the nurse has a responsibility to "update competence continuously"); and d) "responsiveness of the care receiver" (this is where reciprocity enters into the picture; the nurse must receive a positive and healthy response from the patient in order to know if what the nurse did was effective in solving the health issue) (Lachman, 113-114). Another worthy and key point in this article is Dr. Watson's emphasis on the fact that the patient should "never be uses as a means to an end of self-gratification" (Lachman, 114). The care that is given to a patient should occur "…within the framework of a relationship between the nurse and the patient," which closely resembles the meaning of reciprocity. A relationship does and should exist, not in the traditional definition of "relationship" of course but there should be an important and sincere "interchange" and it must be based on meeting the care needs of the patient and the patient's family as well (Lachman, 114). A list of the Steps Taken by Nursing to Develop and Implement an EBP A questioning approach is always recommended as nurses work towards the development of evidence-based practices. What works and what doesn't work - those are pragmatic questions that are taken into account during the development of a practice based on evidence, in other words, what works and is proven effective is evidence-based. Once a nurse is fully educated in the most recent and relevant patient-centered approach to nursing, using the latest knowledge available in pain management, for example, is a way of providing protocols for evidence-based practices. The first step is education, which provides a strong background for the nurse in practices, procedures and protocols. That education the nurse receives must be updated frequently so she or he stays in the forefront of that knowledge. The second step follows in the path of education is practice; the patient has needs that are to be met and implementing practices that solve health problems is evidence that those practices are valid. The practices were found to be valid and hence were put in place based on theory-based approaches that became proven problem-solving incidents -- that is, based on evidence from patient results that have contributed to the betterment of the patient. Application of Learned Information This example of EBP involved the question of how long a catheter should be left in place prior to being replaced. In a given hospital, the practice was always to replace catheters weekly; the manufacturer recommended 2-3 weeks. So a study was launched involving 26 patients all on long-term catheterization; some has urinary pH that in time blocked the catheter with encrustation; others' urine had different pH that didn't block the latex catheter. The evidence showed patients with the pH that blocked catheters should have the catheter changed every 14 days and others, whose pH did not block the catheter, should have a change after about 28 days; hence, an evidence-based practice was put into place (French, 1999). Conclusion Nurses and patients benefit when nurses are keeping up on every new medical research discovery, which is part of their ongoing education, and which keeps them current because medical advancements are continually changing and emerging. But moreover, this paper references the ethical standards that nurses are expected to adhere to. It also goes into the definition of caring, it uses the theories of well-known scholars in the field, and it raises the expectations of patients who of course care about how competent and caring nurses are that are providing healthcare services to that patient. There is a critical moral psychology that is a key part of nursing, on a biological, social, medical and psychological level. Works Cited French, Peter. (1999). Exploring Body Modification in the Digital Age
Body modification is a long-standing practice that involves purposeful changes to one's structure or appearance for a variety of purposes. People modificate their bodies in a variety of ways, from permanent operations like scarification and plastic surgery to more temporary ones like tattoos and piercings, to express their own selves, conform to societal standards, or reflect personal beliefs.
In the history, physical modification has been common in many cultures as a way to define one's identity, affinities, and perceives in a particular setting (Lane, 2020). However, in the modern era, this has evolved to reflect the shifting dynamics of society and the process of developing identity. With an effort to match their outward look with their inner sense of self, people modify their bodies as a means of self-expression (Atkinson, 2003b). People alter their bodies to express their individual ideas, values, and aesthetic preferences, whether through beauty procedures, tattoos, or piercings.
The conversation around modifying one's body is significantly shaped by online platforms. They operate as forums for enthusiasts to interact, exchange experiences, and discuss techniques. In addition to platform governance, which guarantees adherence to community guidelines and regulations addressing body alteration material, these communities frequently self-regulate by creating norms and standards.
Social media platforms enable users to display their physically changes and interact with communities with equivalent intellects, increasing the exposure of these changes. Social media sites like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube function as online galleries where people show off their piercings, tattoos, and other body modifications while sharing their life stories worldwidely (Wohlrab et al., 2009). But platform governance uses community standards, moderation guidelines, and algorithms to control how such information is presented and made it visible. The kinds of body modification content that are allowed on certain platforms can be influenced by the community standards and content moderation rules that these platforms implement. For example, some platforms have limitations on content that includes violence, nudity, or violent images (Ellis, 2015).

Grading System In Canada - Collegepond
In the maple-draped halls of Canadian academia, the grading system is a compass guiding students through their educational journey. Understanding the nuances of the grading system in Canada is essential for both homegrown learners and international students seeking to thrive in this diverse educational landscape. So, let's embark on a journey of exploration into the grading system in Canada.
The Pillars of Evaluation: Grading System in Canada **1. Percentage Prowess: At the heart of the Canadian grading system lies the percentage-based evaluation. From the bustling classrooms of Toronto to the serene campuses of Vancouver, students are assessed on a scale of 0 to 100, with each digit representing a step on the ladder of academic achievement.
A+: 90-100% A: 85-89% A-: 80-84% B+: 75-79% B: 70-74% B-: 65-69% C+: 60-64% C: 50-59% D: 40-49% F: 0-39%
Grading System in Canada: Unveiling the GPA Tapestry: Beyond percentages, the Grade Point Average (GPA) system weaves an intricate tapestry of academic accomplishment. Each letter grade is assigned a specific numerical value, creating a comprehensive snapshot of a student's overall performance.
A+: 4.3 A: 4.0 A-: 3.7 B+: 3.3 B: 3.0 B-: 2.7 C+: 2.3 C: 2.0 D: 1.0 F: 0.0
Beyond Grades: The Pass/Fail Horizon: While letter grades dominate the landscape, some courses venture into the realm of Pass/Fail dynamics. This approach fosters an environment where the focus shifts from the sheer pursuit of grades to a holistic understanding and application of knowledge.
Unraveling the Incomplete and Withdrawal Threads: The Canadian grading system acknowledges the twists and turns of academic life. An "Incomplete" grade offers students a lifeline, allowing them additional time to fulfill course requirements.
