Krenko’s Guide to Pokemon: Farfetch’d line

Sometimes a Pokemon is designed to be a playable thing, but just doesn’t mesh right and so winds up a bit weak. Sometimes a Pokemon’s designed to be an interesting early game choice that caps out fast and stops being useful late game. And sometimes some jackass in Vermillion City scams you into trading a perfectly usable Spearow for a useless duck that’s only useful as dinner that you can’t even eat.

DESIGN:

Paradoxically, the worst part of Farfetch’d is that is design is SO COOL. Farfetch’d has huge wing-hands and a leek weapon so despite just being a duck it looks like it’ll kick your ass. Farfetch’d looks like something that would stare down a Legendary and insist he’s got this, and then somehow actually pull it off. Farfetch’d is awesome. So why is this a problem? Because it can’t put its money where its mouth is. It looks badass, but it sucks. Usually you can tell how strong a Pokemon is roughly by how it looks. Farfetch’d looks like the hero, but it’s a total zero. Galarian Farfetch’d is basically the same design, but with an even bigger leek. Also it’s darker. On the one hand, I’m disappointed that there’s not much more interesting about it, but on the other hand, why mess with a good thing? Galarian Farfetch’d just looks like a slower, stronger Farfetch’d using a big two-handed weapon.

And then we’ve got Sirfetch’d. Now, overall, I do like Sirfetch’d’s design. Its leek is grown larger, cut into sword and shield, and it wields them as a proper knight. It stands upright straight and tall, and is pure white, looking less like a scrappy badass and now like a proper hero. My big problem with Sirfetch’d is actually a symptom of my problem with the line as a whole: its coloration and stance make it look like an evolution for the Johtonian Farfetch’d (not Kantonian- there’s no wild population there), not the Galarian one. Galar’s Farfetch’d are clearly two-handed power attack builds, while Johtonian Farfetch’d could easily go from one-handed sword to sword and board.

EVOLUTIONS:

Johtonian Farfetch’d doesn’t evolve at all. Its a single form Pokemon. Single form Pokemon are really only interesting late game. Otherwise they’re picked up and quickly discarded. Farfetch’d is the poster child for this. In Red and Blue, you have to trade a Spearow for it. The issue is, it’s worse than Fearow, and by the time you get the opportunity to trade for it, you can easily just have a Fearow. Farfetch’d really needed an evolution. There was one in an early version of Gold and Silver called Madame, but honestly, it’s stupid looking and I’m not unhappy it got cut. Here’s an artist’s rendering of Madame thanks to Dr. Lava. I get it, but it’s not worth it.

Galarian Farfetch’d evolves into Sirfetch’d after landing three critical hits in a single battle. This is... weird and silly, but actually entirely reasonable to do. If you equip a Leek and use an attack with a heightened critical hit chance, the real difficulty’s just finding something that survives the three crits. My big issue here is that, as far as I know, nowhere in the game do they TELL you this is how to do it. I get that some pokemon evolutions are more mysterious than others, but as things tend to die from being critically hit multiple times, it’s unlikely for someone to find this without looking it up online. Pokemon’s got a lot of evolution methods like this, and frankly, it just needs to stop.

But my biggest issue is that I don’t see why we even needed Galarian Farfetch’d. Farfetch’d could’ve just evolved into Sirfetch’d. Maybe make it Normal/Fighting to suggest that it can no longer fly because it’s got its big weapons now but it’s still the same bird. Instead, it feels like they gave us a new Farfetch’d just to justify its evolution, but we didn’t need a new Farfetch’d and now this just means the old one STILL can’t evolve. Now, this isn’t to say I don’t like it when forms get their own evolutions. Cursola’s a really cool thing that wouldn’t have made sense coming from a classic Corsola, and Obstagoon coming from Galarian Zigzagoon feels more like “what if we do this instead of making its pre-evolutions” and less like “Hey, let’s make a new final Zigzagoon form.” And of course Perrserker and Runerigus are just too heavy variant from the classics to share a name. But Sirfetch’d here feels like Johtonian Farfetch’d is getting cheated out of the evolution it deserves.

I’ve got mixed feelings on Mr. Rime, too, but we’ll get there when we get there.

TYPING: Farfetch’d is a Normal/Flying, which is too common, especially in Red and Blue. With two immunities, two resistances, and three weaknesses, it’s fine, but Normal’s not supereffective against anything and Flying only hits three types and is resisted by three, so it’s not very useful offensively. Also, there’s just way too many straight up better Normal/Flying Pokemon. Like the Fearow you had to give up to get a Farfetch’d. Sirfetch’d is pure fighting, so three weakensses, three resistances, and a lot of interactions offensively. On the plus side, five things are weak to fighting. On the minus, five resist and one’s immune. This is a problem for pure fighting type Pokemon. It’s not really a great type to be. STATS: Farfetch’d suuuuuuucks.

We’re looking at a FULLY EVOLVED Pokemon here with a stat total of 377. Its highest is 90 attack which, sure, is pretty alright, but the rest of its stats range from 52-62. And that’s after a later generation buff. In the early games its attack was only 65. Let me remind you that Fearow, which you had to not get to get a Farfetch’d, has its lowest stat at 61 and the same 90 attack. It’s just better.

I don’t want to too often discuss how a Pokemon’s problem is another overshadowing it, but it’s so important with Farfetch’d because it was originally an in-game trade, and it was an in-game trade that was just a bad deal. But even otherwise, Farfetch’d is pretty rare in any game its in, wheras Spearow are a dime a dozen. And Fearow’s still got three Normal/Flying types in gen 1 that are just better than it. Farfetch’d is really, really bad and deserves an evolution. Galarian Farfetched has near identical stats (+5 attack, -5 speed) but... it evolves. And SIrfetch’d has 135 attack. The rest of its stats aren’t great- its speed is a bit low, and its defenses average out to about average, but 135 more attack than a Machamp, and 65 Speed is still faster than one. It’s more fragile, sure, but it’s a tradeoff.

ABILITIES: Farfetch’d has the usless Keen Eye, but both Defiant and Inner Focus are solid abilities, and both of them prevent the effects of Intimidate, which is helpful on a physical attacker. If Farfetch’d had an evolution, I could see suggesting either, with Defiant better for higher speeds. But Farfetch’d is just a useless waste of space, so moving on. Sirfetch’d has Steadfast and Scrappy. Steadfast increases its speed when an opponent makes it flinch, which is fine but not what we care about. Scrappy allows Sirfetch’d to use Fighting (and Normal) attacks on Ghost Pokemon, which gets rid of its easiest potential roadblock. Sure, there’s still plenty of things that resist Fighting type, but getting rid of an immunity is useful... even if Sirfetch’d learns plenty of Dark moves to cover that anyway. ITEMS: Most of the time I’m not going to talk about items, but it’s important to note that the Leek item raises the Farfetch’d line’s critical hit ratio by two stages. That means a 50% chance to score a critical hit on all attacks, or a 100% chance to crit with any high-crit move. As a critical hit deals 1.5x damage and normally has a 4% chance to fire, this is roughly a 23% damage boost on all your moves. It’s not as much as a Life Orb or Choice Band, but it doesn’t come with a drawback, and critical hits ignore Light Screen, Reflect, +Defense, and -Attack, with the last one meaning Leek gives some Intimidate resistance.

MOVES:

I’m not really going to talk about Farfetch’d’s moves here. There’s no reason to use Farfetched in a real battle.

Sirfetch’d signature move, Meteor Assault, is as strong as Hyper Beam, but is a physical fighting move. ... But Sirfetch’d can also learn Close Combat and despite the lower damage, taking a defense hit is far less terrifying than skipping a turn in a competetive battle. Killing something with Meteor Assault is an invitation to be taken down by a Psychic attack. With Close Combat you can at least switch out. After that is the question of coverage, of which Sirfetch’d doesn’t really have many options. With STAB Meteor Assault having a base power of effectively 180, it’s generally ‘fine’ even when the opponent is resistant. Still, Sirfetch’d has options for other moves, such as... First Impression: One of very few Pokemon that learn this, First Impression is a powerful, high-priority Bug move. Its primary purpose is to kill fast but fragile Pokemon that could revenge-kill Sirfetch’d, especially psychic types like Alakazam. Knock Off: Almost every competitive Pokemon uses an item, so if you’re not about to get your day ruined by Acrobatics, Knock Off is a 97 power move that messes with your opponent’s strategy.

Defog: Sirfetch’d just learns Defog. It doesn’t do much with it’s strategy and it’s a slow pokemon, but sometimes you just need to Defog. Swords Dance: You all know I love Sword’s Dance. It’s not as good on Sirfetch’d as it doesn’t have the defenses to set up or the speed to sweep, but it’s still worth noting. Leaf Blade: I really want to recommend this as a 90 power attack that always crits if used with a Leek, but... it only hits two of the things that resist Close Combat, and First Impression is just better for Psychic opponents. Brave Bird: Not single type resists both Close Combat and Brave Bird, and Brave Bird is very strong. Yes, it hits you back with a lot of recoil, but you can afford recoil if the other Pokemon’s down. Poison Jab: Poison Jab is supereffective against Bug and Fairy types, both of which resist Close Combat. Sirfetch’d can also learn Sunny Day and Solar Blade, but that’s basically just being cute and not something I’d recommend except for fun. An ideal moveset for Sirfetch’d probably includes Close Combat, Brave Bird, and First Impression, with the last move based on the needs of your team. OVERALL: Sirfetch’d fills me with the same annoyance that I’ve gotten from Pokemons Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, and Ultra Sun/Moon. Yes, I love that they added an evolution to Farfetch’d. I appreciate everything about Sirfetch’d as a Pokemon... but MY Farfetch’d can’t evolve? I have to go out and get an entirely new Farfetch’d that’s 90% the same so I can get this expanded better version? You can’t just sell me some Farfetch’d DLC like an item that makes Farfetch’d evolve when you trade it, or make it so Farfetch’d could just evolve the whole time? And Sword and Shield’s willing to do that- Leafeon is just Leaf Stone now, and I could get an Eevee and a Leaf Stone back in Blue.

Is Sirfetch’d good content? Sure. He’s got solid stats, some interesting moves that can be hard to come by, and the ability to hit ghosts. But for a game where you can trade Pokemon from generation to generation, it feels like a huge cop out that Sirfetch’d comes from this new, not-actually-interesting “Galarian Farfetch’d” and our classic Farfetch’d is STILL a useless pile of junk that I traded a perfectly good Spearow for.

Have I mentioned before that I love how Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra are just DLC instead of a brand new version of the game? Because that’s the best. Anyway, the point is, I want my Spearow back. It’s not like I was going to use it, but it’s the principle of the thing.

Tumblr, I tell you what. I’ve been having a difficult couple of weeks. I’m still kind of in the middle of it, too. I’m having another “poor me” phase, and feeling very discouraged about everything. The business thing is still struggling, and I’m having trouble finding motivation to do things. This in turn makes me feel like I don’t have what it takes to run my own business, and I should just go punch someone else’s time clock until I’m 70.

I’m sticking to keto, but truthfully it’s only because I went and put my car away in my garage a week ago, so I don’t have access to it to make midnight 7-11 runs. Nevertheless, every night my brain taps on my shoulder, asking if I should maybe steal my parent’s car keys, or if it’s too far to walk to the store.

While I’m eating keto, I haven’t been able to get my calories down as low as they need to be yet. Even though I weigh 300 lbs, my calories need to be down around 1200 a day to make any significant progress. And I haven’t been able to get down there yet.

Before I got off track a month ago, my lowest weight was 296. I saw as high as 305 on the scale sometime this month, and then as I made attempts to get back on the wagon I got back down to 298-something, which I think also aligned with shark week. Then I bounced back up again to around 304. I’ve been weighing every day for about the last week, and for the last few days I’ve been stuck on 300.8.

In my mind I’ve pretty much already lost that weight loss bet I made. I’ve wasted an entire month, and now I only have four months and still an entire 50 lbs to lose. An average 300 lb person, especially a guy, could easily lose 50lbs in four months with a little hard work, but frankly I just don’t think my body will do it. If I could get to a place where I think I could give some extended fasts a go it *could* be possible, but currently I’m way too hungry for that.

And finally, as I mentioned, my being on the wagon currently is being maintained by external factors, like being at my parents’ house without access to my car. My willpower is pretty low. This upcoming weekend over Labor Day, I have to go down to Austin and housesit/dogsit for my brother. I will be all alone, unsupervised, with a car and a city at my disposal... and it just doesn’t look good. I’ve got the metaphorical angel and devil on my shoulder, the angel reminding me the diet bet isn’t out of range but can afford no more delays, while the devil whispers about the kolache shops in West, and RoundRock Donuts, and all the good food they have in Austin.

So, that’s all the internal reasons I’ve had a hard week. Externally, when I walked into my house a couple days ago it was 91 degrees inside, even though the A/C was running. I turned it off and went back the next day, in case it had frozen up, but it still didn’t work the next day. The system is only four years old, but I wonder if I managed to damage it by running it too much, trying to hit a certain electricity used goal so that I can get the cheapest electricity bill I can. So now it’s going to cost who knows how much to fix that. The system has a 10 year warranty but I’m pretty sure that’s just parts and not labor.

Second, I’ve had some Funko Pops for sale on eBay for a little while. One of them, a Lucky the Leprechaun figure, sold last week. So I packaged it up and sent it off, and immediately when the buyer received it, he requested a refund because the item was damaged. He was trying to claim it wasn’t the item that was in the pictures, that this one was all beat up looking. Well of course what I sent him was in pristine condition, and I immediately knew it was a scammer because I’d heard other people talk about the same thing on the Funko subreddit. The scammer claims they want to return the item, and if you accept, they get their money back and they ship you not what you sold them, but something worthless it its place.

After looking closer, I discovered this buyer’s account was less than two weeks old and has zero feedback. Had I noticed this before, I would have thought twice about completing the sale in the first place, because these scammers create new accounts every time they pull this, since the account will get banned when the scam is discovered. Rest assured I will not make that mistake ever again.

I requested proof of the damage from the buyer twice, which they ignored both times. After 5 days, I was told, the buyer would have the ability to escalate the claim, at which time eBay would step in. At that point, the buyer would have to provide proof, right? Wrong. The buyer escalated the claim at 2:30 AM (in the middle of the night, of course), and by 2:35 AM eBay had already sided with him and directed him to return the item to me, even though they could see my messages in their system and that he’d ignored my requests for proof.

I spent the next two days being pissed off about it, until I received his package back, containing - surprise surprise - a figure of Cartman from South Park, worth probably $5, instead of the $100 figure I had sold him. I called eBay and they refunded my money without even asking for any proof on my end. I guess maybe $100 is small potatoes for them but this whole process made me so angry. If they had asked the scammer for even a shred of proof... And then, when someone returns an eBay item, they have the option of making the seller pay for return shipping, so of course he did that as well. So that ended up being another couple of calls to eBay, making them refund that charge too, since it had turned out to be a scam and wasn’t my idea to allow the return in the first place.

On a completely different note, I recommend the movie Ready or Not, out in theatres right now. It had a pitiful opening weekend, which surprised me. It’s gotten good reviews, and it was a great movie. Samara Weaving was great in it, and I learned she’s Hugo Weaving’s niece (Agent Smith from Matrix, the elf dad guy in LOTR, and Red Skull from Captain America). Also Adam Brody was good in it, and I always like to see Dave Rygalski doing well.

Fearlessness

When I was a little girl, about 4 or 5 years old, my dad asked me, “How are you always so confident?” “Oh Daddy,” I replied, “I’m not really, I just act like I am.”

This is a constant theme in my life. I’m sure any number of friends or acquaintances would describe me as fearless - they’ve said as much. I joined an improv group when I was 25. Before one of our shows, the “father” of the group, as we so lovingly called him, asked how I was always so cool, calm and collected before we go on stage. “You never seem nervous.” But the truth was, before every show, I feared I was awful at this, that no words would come out and that I was the worst one on stage. “I’m nervous,” I said. “I’m a wreck before every show, I just don’t act like it.” Whatever that meant. In my 30′s as an executive recruiter, I would interview CEO’s making half a million dollars and find them new jobs that would pay them the full mill. I could always sense their need for my validation: am I right for this job? Will I be good enough to get an interview? Like I was the gatekeeper of their destiny - me, making an hourly wage. During a year-end review with my boss, she remarked how I was incredible at placing and recruiting candidates for jobs that I understood really well, and now I needed to translate that to roles I don’t understand as well (mostly tech ones). I told her that made sense. “I have so much anxiety when I get on the phone with Chief Technology Officers. I feel like I’m in over my head.” “Oh Caroline,” she remarked, “You??? Fearful!? You’re the most fearless person I know. I feel like you could do anything.” Everyone tells me that. That’s me! Fearless - a definitive trait, absolute since I was 4. But to me, it’s all an act. And perhaps those pretending NOT to be are the most fearful of all. It’s not only fear of the thing itself, it’s the fear of being discovered as a fraud. A phony. Pride and fear. What’s the difference?

Sometimes I channel all my fear into an energy that’s bubbly, upbeat, on top of it all. But don’t be fooled, it’s the same energy as fear, different flow. On paper, sure call it fearless. I left a career as a recruiter to become an actress at the age of 32. Fearless? Nah. I was trapped in my own mind, knowing I’d wanted to be an actor since birth, and holding myself back my entire life for fear of disappointing people by not having a “reasonable” job. I left my friends and family in New York and moved to LA at 29. Fearless? Nah. Trapped in the fear that if I stayed in New York, I’d never be strong enough to fight for myself and my needs. Hell, I left Indiana after college and moved to New York City! Fearless? Maybe that one I’ll give you. But it never felt like a choice to me, it felt like survival. Maybe that’s the key to all the fearless people you know. They’re afraid if being trapped, and they’re just fighting for survival. That’s what it feels like for me on a daily basis. My big, bold moves feel like my only options if I want to live my life the way I’m meant to, in my bones, to be authentically me, and that’s the most fearful you could possibly be.

At the peak of my anxiety in 2015, I did a lot of yoga and meditation, trying to help myself in a holistic way with everything I could think of. While waiting for a restorative class one day, I perused the gift shop inside the studio lobby. What a scam those things are, preying on the waiting, and I fall for it every time. This particular day, I was struck by a display of necklaces with keys on them. The brand was called The Giving Key, and each key had a word on it: hope, contentment, peace etc. The idea being that you buy the key most resonant to you and gift or give it away when the moment feels right or when it no longer serves you. I scanned through the key necklaces and found a shiny, copper key that read “fearless”. I laughed out loud. Thank you, universe. At my lowest of lows on the anxiety train, the moment I felt the furthest from myself I had ever been, I heard voices from my past calling me fearless, and I knew this key was mine. I bought it, not because it was true, but because maybe one day I could finally see what everyone else sees in me. A mere matter of months later, in the midst of a particularly challenging period as an actor and what could be considered a low point in my career, I was alongside a great friend of mine who was absolutely killing it, succeeding beyond but was riddled with insecurities. My anxiety had subsided, but with no uptick in any other meaningful facet of my life. I’d made peace with my path, with not booking roles, with not being “seen” or misunderstood, with not making money from anything I cared about. I know myself, and that’s enough. Watching my talented friend struggle while succeeding, I smiled and handed her the key. “Here. This is yours now, because I see it in you. Remind yourself who you are.” I gave her that necklace and realized how far I’d come. It’s not that I’m fearless or not, it’s that I’m at peace with the feelings inside me. I’m at peace with my anxiety and my fears. I’m at peace when I’m doing well, when I’m not doing well and everything in between. However it appears to others or how it seems to myself, whether those ideas are conflicting or concurrent, true or perceived, I’m at peace. Because fearless is no longer the goal, it’s peace. They hit $5.7 billion in revenue in 2017, down from $6.16 billion in revenue in 2015 and $9.23 billion in 2011. That’s no temporary slump. [4]

In fact, shares have been declining for some time. At the end of 2017, shares traded for $4.65, which is just a tenth of what they were worth in May 2004, when shares traded for $44. [5]

If it wasn’t already clear that they’re struggling to keep their head above water, in 2015, Avon sold the remainder of their North American business and moved their headquarters over to the UK, cutting some 2,500 jobs worldwide in the process. While Avon certainly isn’t going to win any contest for best cosmetics line in the world, especially up against uber-popular and forever trendy brands like Urban Decay, NARS, Benefit, and MAC, they are generally well-liked (especially at the price point) and very well-established.

Their skincare products are a little pricier, mostly ranging from $7-$38, but they have fantastic reviews. Marie Claire even called their skincare products “the perfect solution for every skin problem you’ve ever had.”

The Skin So Soft Original Dry Oil Body Spray has long been one of their most famous products, partially because it does what it says (makes your skin so soft), but also because people have discovered that it’s one of the most effective insect repellents. I sure wasn’t. I had an average-paying administrative job the year before I left for my first trip. It wasn’t a lot after taxes.

Yet I managed to save enough to travel the world. How? I made it a priority. If travel is not a priority for you, you will always find some other things to spend money on and you’ll never have “enough” money to travel. I never have enough money to go shopping or buy a new electronic gadget because I spend my money on travel, so there isn’t much left over for non-priority expenses. Everything I do is focused on having more money for travel (and other things I love like sushi, movies, and nice dinners)!

At the time, I was still paying college debt, and yet using those tips managed to save over $20,000 for my initial trip around the world.
