90% of Watership Down content you see (art, quotes, references, everything) is about the blessing of El-ahrairah and honestly I get it, that quote hits harder than anything most books have to offer
#all the world will be your enemy prince with a thousand enemies#and when they catch you they will kill you#but first they must catch you#listener digger runner with the swift warning#be cunning and full of tricks and your people will never be destroyed#watership down#i often see the 'runner with a swift warning' misquoted as 'warren'#but its warning!#because right before this encounter with frith#a swift (the bird)#warned el-ahrairah what was happening

Oldest Known Black Swift Found in Colorado
This story from the field comes from Bird Conservancy of the Rockies biologists Rob Sparks and Colin Woolley: “On August 1st 2023, we were excited to recapture a female Black Swift at a nesting site in Colorado, where it was first banded as an adult (after-hatch-year) bird in 2005! That makes this swift at least 19 years old, breaking the longevity record set in 2022… by this very same swift! That’s right, this swift has been returning to nest at the same site since at least 2005, and has been recaptured 14 times over the years. Research like this highlights the importance of long-term monitoring projects and what they can reveal about a species’ site fidelity and lifespan. Right now, this swift is likely in Brazilian airspace, soaring over the Amazon Basin, where it will remain aloft for the entire overwintering period. Here’s to hoping this bird returns to nest in Colorado in 2024!” All banding is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey’s BBL.

the chimney swift is a medium-sized member of the swift family primarily found in the southeastern united states + northern south america. at one point, these birds used hollow trees to nest; today, they are almost entirely found using man-made structures, primarily chimneys, which is how they get their name. like other swifts, they are unable to perch, but can vertically cling to surfaces. if groups of chimney swifts are disturbed, they may loudly clap their wings in an attempt to scare off predators. these birds live much of their lives in the air, and only feed on insects and arthropods caught in flight.

Any spine-tailed swifts in your pocket? Grade-school me was absolutely obsessed after reading trivia about their flight speed (which apparently is difficult to verify?)
Spine-tailed Swifts:
The birds have been reputed to have the fastest flapping flight of any bird, as around 170 kph/105 mph, but that has been disputed for some time, as scientific methods were not used to arrive at that number. The Common Swift has been accurately and scientifically measured at 166 kmh/103 mph, displacing them unfortunately.

Spine-tailed Swift aka White-throated Needletail (Hirundapus caudacutus), family Apodidae, order Apodiformes, Australia
Resident (year round) in the Himalyas
Breeding in East Asia
Wintering in Australia
