hello friend <3 i would love to hear your thoughts about how tms is an allegory for climate change :000 it immediately caught my attention lol

HI HELLO THANK YOU FOR ASKING!!! i for once finished my comic work for the day early so i have time to answer >:D

SO. this climate crisis allegory thing isn't so obvious in the first couple of books but like. once we get into arc 2 when they're dealing with The Actual Big Problem, it gets a lot more obvious even though the original intent was somewhat like a meta-commentary on creativity and letting go of perfectionism so im gonna put it below a readmore because um. spoilers for an 8 book epic fantasy that i havent fully completed yet nor decided on how im gonna publish it.

so The Actual Big Problem has been revealed by the end of book 1, but it doesnt get addressed right away because there's more immediate survival problems. and requires a bit of a quick lore refresh so in case said lore has been forgotten/never actually seen before:

a little over 1000 years ago there was a priestess in nimia who bore witness to a prophecy while she was giving birth that the Goddesses were planning to use the next beat of the millennium cycle to get rid of magic. they all have Their own reasons but The Goddess Of Magic's major reason was that it was used too often for destruction and infighting among Their beloved creations (aka all the people of ehl)

this is seen as a Very Bad Sign, because a) the next beat is in 21 years at this point and b) the line between what is "magic" and what is "a person who can do magic" or even "a species brought about by magic, sapient or not" is fuzzy or even nonexistent. theres a distinct possibility that 90% of all species on the planet are just erased if magic is erased. that's where i first was like "oh shit climate crisis allegory"

HOWEVER. the prophecy was given by specifically the Goddess of battle, and She said She believed it was possible to convince the other Goddesses to walk that back

the baby who was born is deemed the Chosen One to do that convincing by the highpriestesses of nimia. this is not revealed to said baby until he is thirteen, and he is bidden to choose a name before he embarks on his journey to try and get the world to unite (the highpriestesses' idea of the best argument is that if we can control the people who use magic we can thus control magic and mitigate its use as a weapon)

that name is Tieling. you may recognize him from snippets and memes and general rambling on here. he goes on his journey, convinces the Goddesses, and is rewarded immortality to himself and his two closest allies by Them, at the cost of smiting a city from the face of the planet.

he's now king of the mae ehlves for until he decides to Stop Doing That

also just a lil more backstory from before Tieling's time: there have been Decays before. every other 1k years something gets done that removes something from the world. one of them included just. inverting an entire continent so it went from mountains to deep sea trenches. they all include mass extinctions that have great repercussions on the world at large

now. where TMS actually Begins. its now ~6 years before there's supposed to be another beat of the millennium cycle, and no one is quite sure what's going to happen. prophecy as a magic has died and gone away as far as anyone is aware, including Tieling.

except towards the end of book 1 our main character Ember Flexes and speaks prophecy. and they find out that Tieling DIDN'T actually convince the Goddesses to not do the Great Decay (the term historians decided on for the magic erasure), he just asked them for more time. and for a way to keep himself and his boyfriend and the one world leader he promised something like this for her cooperation alive for as long as it took.

they gave him one more beat to figure it out.

the world is not saved. the Great Decay and mass extinction is looming. no one except this one guy and now a handful of people who Did Not Sign Up For This know, and Tieling is very adamant that he should be the one to save the world because he was Chosen.

now. major spoilers for arc 2 (and book 4's ending) but Ember reveals this to the world. and, as you may expect, it doesn't go over well.

a lot of people are scared. most people, probably.

a lot of the people in power are convinced it's not their problem to solve. it's Tieling's.

some of the people in power straight up do not believe that it's happening, whether they frame it as still happening or was ever really going to happen in the first place, despite more and more Prophets getting visions after the dormant period and insisting that yeah, actually, this is a problem that needs solving.

crucially, when Ember reveals this to the world, they also say to hell with being Chosen, this is EVERYONE'S problem to solve together. no singular person or group should be in charge of this because this is EVERYONE'S planet we're talking about

now, the planet does get saved. it takes massive cooperation and also getting rid/neutering of a bunch of the people in power who insist they don't have to do anything (like, you know, stop going to war, using magic as torture and spying implements, using other magic as a reason to purge and discriminate against certain groups, etc etc aka all the things that Goddesses and Prophets alike have told them time and time again are making the problem worse.) and also a lot of hope and rejection of Unity (Imperialism). but it does get saved.

there's a whole bunch of other readings that can be made on this as well, especially since this whole spiel is just me talking about the stuff that supports the climate crisis argument and there's a billion other things i've been consciously writing into the core messages of the books. but i think this might be one of my favorites.

In Your Wake is simply my retelling of Mello and Matt's story, so filling in the gaps, reimagining stuff while keeping it canon compliant, making some things funnier and other things sadder, the whole shebang ^^

The title is from the bridge of FrnkIero and the Cellabration's She’s The Prettiest Girl at the Party, and She Can Prove It With a Solid Right Hook: "All we wanted was what we were/ And what we were was young and naive/ I found my place in this world/ It’s in your wake, in your wake, in your wake". I just think it's one of "their songs", but "In Your Wake" can also be read as an allusion to Near being left in the wake of their tragedy.

I honestly dk if I'll ever get around to posting it... I'd love to, but it's so long and some "technical" parts are quite tedious to write, so I don't know if I'll ever find that kinda time. I think I'd rather just focus on publishing some smaller fics first (they're all part of the same "verse", and, as the main beast, IYW kinda needs those smaller works to fully make sense anyway)

I think Alexis wouldn't belive Alex lost her virginity without her, I think she's going to be hurt as long as the person Alex was having sex with wasn't her. She doesn't frame it that way in her mind but their codependency becomes sexual in an inherent way because they literally cannot do anything without the other. Alex tries to break away from this by having sex with and dating Lucía but it doesn’t work for Alexis — because even this rebellion is at its core about her in Alexis' mind. He has sex with Lucía to gain some agency, to tell herself Alexis doesn't control her life, but she has done it for so long he *can't be sure it's working*. And this isn't exactly Alexis' fault — she controls Alex through Alex's own obsession with and dependency on her, pushed on them by their parents and the way they where raised. Twins, puppets, two-headed calf, freaks of nature.

It brought him joy, so where had his empathy gone?  Why had it felt like retaliation instead of entertainment? He’d really messed with him, but didn’t Matt have a habit of doing the exact same? And after Mello had gone along with it back in June, Matt certainly should’ve found it in himself to just laugh this off. They were best friends, playing around like best friends did. There was nothing to get jealous about, not girlfriends for show, nor shows for passersby, because they were above all those things. That hadn’t changed, right? Because Matt would never forgive himself if it had…

Without notice, Mello came skipping back as if nothing had happened, holding— Christ. The relief he’d welcomed turned out to be a bucket of icy humiliation. “Thought this might be juuust garish enough for ya!” He lay the highlighter yellow velour on the nearest stand for him. A tracksuit. Cropped. With bedazzled thong strings. What was that supposed to mean? He was never trying that on. “Yeah, right up my alley…” Mello looked between his discovery and him, beaming pride and accomplishment. “Good. ‘Cause this I’d pay for.” Oh, so that abomination or nothing, was it now? “Think of it as a souvenir…” The tone bordered on villainous, but the one-sided squint turned it downright malefic. Okay, maybe he hadn’t been quite mean enough. Maybe it was actually time for Mello to pay. In full. He turned away a lot more solemnly than he’d come, leaving him there with the cunting thing.
