Decoding "Neurodivergence"
If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. There is controversy about the source of this quote. Regardless of the source, I think about this idea many times. For example, when I go to my brother’s house and see the little fish tank, I always remember this saying. The question that I think about is: What kind of environments are…

I went home for the weekend in Columbus, Ohio and I stopped by Starbucks. As I was looking at the gift cards, I noticed a this card. It has braille on the top of it and I tried to translate it when I got home, but I could not figure it out. This gift card is an example of accessibility for people with disabilities. A blind person would be unable to tell what each card has written on it, but the braille gives them the chance to pick one out on their own. Starbucks also has large print and braille menus. This gives people with visual impairments independence.
This situation relates to “The Social Construction of Disability” by Susan Wendell. She states “disability is relative to a person’s physical, social, and cultural environment, none of the resulting physical conditions is necessarily disabling, many do in fact cause disability given the demands and lack of support in the environments of the people affected” (Wendell 49). If society offered more support, would anyone look at themselves as disabled? For example, if every food institution offered menus with braille and large print, would society still see it as a disability to be visually impaired when going to these places?  We have created the norm of using our visual senses to figure out our options at these places. We, as a society, have constructed what is “able” and what is “disabled”.
