Boy, do I have the tool for you!

Through my hyperfixation on those a few weeks back I found out that 1) those fuckers are fucking expensive and 2) if you don't know what which do and don't have the right tools on the side you won't be able to do anything and lose a lot of money

The solution to those problems is...

VCV Rack 2

VCV Rack 2 is a free eurorack system that allows you to mount whatever modular synthesizer rack you want. It not only has a free (and very complete) version (a pro version exists too though) but it has a wide library!

You start with the VCV Rack library, which actually is good enough to start, but you can (and should) also add anything from the library that you want. I just checked as I am writing and there are "2,494 modules found" in the free category. Yes, yes, you read that right.

To be able to add modules to your VCV Rack, however, you'll need to make an account, but that is just to link the module/brand you added/subscribed to the program you installed. You also have to add/subscribe first, then go to VCV to update the modules. Updating them will lead to the program closing, so if you're following along a video, look at which modules/brands are used so you don't have to leave and come back during the follow-along.

Installing VCV Rack is really easy, you just need to go on the website and select the version you want!

In order to understand VCV Rack a bit better and do your first racks, I made a small playlist made out of the four 30-50 minute long videos from Red Means Recording, and one video from Omri Cohen. I really like what Red Means Recording does, but it's not just VCV. Omri Cohen has a lot more VCV stuff though.

I was getting very stuck the other day with a house track I'm working on and decided to try to get some inspiration/learning in by following a YouTube tutorial.

So I watched this one by OVERSAMPLED about making "vibey Lofi house (VERY CHILL)" and tried to follow his steps to make my own, very similar house track.

I like doing exercises like these because it takes all the hard thinking out of composing -- what sound should I add next, how should I structure the song, etc. -- and you can learn little tricks by imitating someone else. Some things I learned from this exercise:

-delaying the off-beat hihats in house music by just a fraction to produce that swing feel

-using chopped up bits of snare samples to produce little subtle rimshot sounds in the percussion

-first time using SERUM the ableton plugin as a synth instrument, I like how you can customize the sound waves and it comes with a kit of sounds ready-made for dance music

-placing a continuous, low-volume riser sample in the background during energetic parts to add a white-noise, hi-frequency texture to the song. subtle, but it adds some texture and energy. I sidechained it to the kick so it would have a kind of upbeat swing to it.

Some things I'm still struggling to figure out:

-how to get a really good grand piano sound for house music. that "lo-fi" quality to the piano that so many house tracks have -- I'm currently using a combo of Chorus, EQing, Compressor, Reverb and tweaking settings on the Ableton default grand sound. but it still doesn't sound the way I want. but I'm hesitating to shell out money for the plugin that he uses in this video (SAUCE for ableton) so I might have to spend more time making an effects rack for this.

-really getting into the synthesizer and customizing the synth waves and sounds to be exactly what I want. still a bit intimidated by the huge SERUM dashboard and relying on the presets they give me. I'd like to be able to customize the synths to be very particular (and add automation) since synths are so crucial in dance music.

AUG 11. the next element to come in is at around 1 minute 25 seconds, and this is the bright, shiny sound. I used a preset from a free ableton pack called 'samplification' that is meant to be a more ambient pad, and i switched out the samples and put my own sample in, the same 10 second one I have been using the whole time.

then i put an effects rack on it, this one is a recreation of a spectralizer i have seen a few people use, and also a big space reverb

I put a glitchy, jerky pattern in the midi and tried to make it sound like it was shooting around all over the place. I have it doubled, one in octave 2 and one in octave 4
