Five Six (2023), acrylic on canvas 80 x 80cm.
I tend to think of these as ‘inverted’ pictures: Forms that I could have painted black but instead worked in a reductive way (from an off-white starting point to a largely black finish) until the forms emerge and the painting largely completes itself. At a certain point the main motifs emerge and I can then add white or remove black until the image works. I’m finding it quite a satisfying way to paint.

Artist Grace Hartigan
Mar 28, 1922 – Nov 15, 2008
#AmericanAbstractExpressionistpainter
#Hartigan was often thought of as a “second generation Abstract Expressionist”, being heavily influenced by her colleagues of the time. Her early career was characterized by experiments with total abstraction, as seen in the work Six by Six (1951) currently in the collection of the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center in Poughkeepsie, NY.
Beginning in the early fifties, Hartigan began to incorporate more recognizable motifs and characters into her paintings.
Also during this time, she exhibited under the name George Hartigan in an attempt to achieve greater recognition for her work.
She started to use Grace as her first name in 1953.

And here we are again... Loki is currently enjoying this piece as is. I love the black-yellow color combination, and I'm not sure I can explain why. Anyway, right now, this painting resembles Fear, a series of minimalist abstract paintings I painted a few years ago (I have a few of them posted on my art account), and I'm still planning on moving forward and continuing work on this painting, even though I'm really loving the look right now.
By the way, I don't usually think to mention my art account here since these aren't promotional pieces, but anyone wanting to see more abstract art can check out @karenreiser.
So, thank you to those who stayed to read my ramblings.
Hail Loki! I love You always!

Lee Krasner (USA, 1908 - 1984)
https://palianshow.wordpress.com/2024/10/27/lee-krasner/
Lenore “Lee” Krasner (born Lena Krassner; Oct 27, 1908 – Jun 19, 1984) was an American abstract expressionist painter, with a strong speciality in collage.
She received her early academic training at the Women's Art School of Cooper Union, and the National Academy of Design from 1928 to 1932. Krasner's exposure to Post-Impressionism at the newly opened Museum of Modern Art in 1929 led to a sustained interest in modern art.
During the Great Depression, Krasner joined the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, transitioning to war propaganda artworks during the War Services era.
The late 1950s to the early 1960s in Krasner's work were characterized by a more expressive and gestural style. In her later years, she received broader artistic and commercial recognition and shifted toward large horizontal paintings marked by hard-edge lines and bright contrasting colors. via Wikipedia | Krasner in 1983

Art in the City - New York (12/11/19)
We talked about one of my new favourite topics in this lecture!! Abstract Expressionism! I love it, I particularly love the women of the AbEx’s, while they have been ridiculously overlooked in exchange for their male counterparts... as usual... their work is just as interesting, just as consequential, and just as influential. In my further research into the women of the AbEx’s I have found this wonderful give and take of influence between the male and female artists; Lee Krasner potentially invented the drip technique that her husband, Jackson Pollock, used in near all of his paintings, however the other way around Elaine de Kooning’s practice was developed by her husband’s portrait sketches which inspired her to be the only AbEx who used figuration in her paintings.
But that was only one part! And the part that I got ridiculously into because of the academic poster assignment we were given...
We started talking about the mass migration of artists from Europe to America during the Second World War, focusing on Marcel Duchamp and his... scandal... I mean he changes the face of art, how we look at art, and what we consider art - which I believe is one of the main forces behind Andy Warhol later in the century. We only touched momentarily on the Harlem Renaissance, another of my favourite moments in the history of art (might say this about all of the movements...) because of the way it grew; a massive group of people whose culture and history had been stripped from them entirely and replaced with in humane suffering, this group of artists, musicians, writers, dancers, everyone part of the Harlem renaissance were able to create something joyful and celebratory from nothing. Next came the amazing American Realism with another of my favourite artists, Edward Hopper (seriously, go and look for interviews with him, he is a funny guy), and one of his most famous paintings ‘Nighthawks’ (1942). Through the AbEx’s and then onto Pop Art!

Hopper, E. (1942) Nighthawks. Chicago: Art Institute of Chicago Building
What I really loved about this lecture was Julie highlighting all the artists of colour, we looked at Emma Amos, Faith Ringgold, Lou Mailou Jones, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. What you’ll notice from the list is that not only are the non-white artists there are also women! Which I really love because despite enjoying out Thursday lectures immensely (there is so much info in them, I love it) but because we are looking at European art most of the artists are men, and they are all white... so experiencing all these non-white artists is amazing because of the way they view the world and the way they interpret their viewpoint in their medium. Every artist in this list is someone you should go out and look into!

Amos, E. (1973) Sandy and her Husband. Cleveland: Cleveland Museum of Art

Ringgold, F. (1983) Who’s Afraid of Aunt Jemima?.

Jones, L. M. (1932) The Ascent of Ethiopia. Milwaukee: Milwaukee Art Museum

Basquiat, J-M. (1981) Irony of Negro Policemen. Private Collection
