Kanchenjunga Expedition on 2 April 2018 at New Delhi.A 15-member team, comprising 12 climbing and 3 base camp members, including a doctor, has been selected for Mt. Kanchenjunga Expedition 2018. Located at an elevation of 8586 m on the border of Sikkim (India) and Nepal, Mt Kanchenjunga, has been rated as one of the World’s Toughest and most Challenging Mountains to climb.Dharmendra Pradhan flagging off the ONGC Mt Kanchenjunga Expedition 2018Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Mr. Pradhan appreciated ONGC’s initiative. “My best wishes to all the ONGCians in their mission to scale the 3rd highest peak in the world. After leaving the footprints of their courage, conviction & commitment on Mt. Everest last year, I am sure the 12 member team would conquer this challenge and create a new history”, he said. These expeditions are a unique employee engagement initiative by ONGC to instill values of camaraderie, team spirit & adventure within the organization, he added.CMD, ONGC Shashi Shanker, said “ONGCians have always proved that no challenge is too big for us. After successfully scaling the Everest, the team has set its sight on one of the most difficult peaks to summit in the world. I wish them all the luck for a successful expedition”. He further added that the ONGC's history shows that we have crossed great challenges with special attention to the safety of all and I am sure that the Kanchenjunga expedition members will overcome all hurdles in the same spirit.Director (HR), ONGC, Mr. D D Misra, who is the driving force behind this initiative, outlined various stages of training program those have been imparted to the participants in the expedition. “The Successful summit of Mt Everest is still fresh in our heart. Being an E&P company, adventure is part of our DNA. Mission Kanchenjunga will enable creation of more role models, as was seen post the Everest Expedition”, he said.Mr. Misra informed that the ONGC team will scale Mt Kanchenjunga through the south east route. “Success of the expedition will reinforce our belief that we can achieve anything through passion, attitude & grit - from the highest peaks to deepest wells”, he said. Mr. Misra also highlighted that the presence of team members from different states of the country and the inclusion of three women ONGC executives, makes the expedition team a perfect embodiment of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.Colonel H S Chauhan said that when Mr. Pradhan met the successful Mt. Everest expedition members, he had asked “What Next”. So this Kanchenjunga expedition is that what next. Like before he is again optimistic about the successful completion of this expedition which will  again give a chance to Mr Pradhan to ask “What Next”.The kick off to the function witnessed immense enthusiasm from the team of 15 young ONGCians drawn from different disciplines raring to scale the third highest peak of the world and extend ONGC’s footprint beyond the scale of any human imagination. The expedition is being led by ONGCian Nirmal Kumar, who had successfully summited the Mt Everest last year. The expedition members include four members of the successful Everest expedition; Yogendar Garbiyal and Rahul Jarngal had summited the Everest while Monty Rajkhowa and Surendra Singh Tomar had scaled till camp 4 and camp 3 of the Mt Everest respectively. Kanchenjunga. It was divided into 3 phases, phase 1- Satvopath expedition, Phase 2- ABVIMAS, Manali and Ladakh and phase 3 includes Manali for 10 days. The entire team of ONGC has been trained for this expedition by experts from the IMF, under the mentorship of Col H S Chauhan, President, Indian Mountaineering Foundation. The ONGC Board of Directors and senior officials from MoPNG and oil PSUs wished the Mt Kanchenjunga Expedition Team the very best in this challenging endeavor.

Prologue : My BMC at ABVIMAS July 2015 - 1
Prologue : My BMC at ABVIMAS July 2015 – 1
(Originally intended to be published in September 2015!)
Its now been a month and a half since I completed the course that has been a distant dream to me ever since I can remember. To give you a better perspective, my love for the mountains goes back more than two decades, probably back when I was turning into a rebellious “eigh”-teenager (yep I was 18) looking for something to take me away from…

ONGC raised me to live and make live: Dr Nitin Chawla on doctoring ONGC Everest Mission
“Since the ONGC team needed a medical doctor who could support the expedition, I got selected in the team”, recalls a shy-yet-smart Dr Nitin Chawla, a member of the victorious ONGC team which summited Mount Everest in May this year.
This hardcore doctor stands firmly by his Hippocratic Oath as he decided to embark on the ONGC Mission Everest, safeguarding the lives of his team mates. For Dr. Nitin Chawla, the real adventure commenced when over sixty selected ONGCians arrived in Dehradun to undergo a 20-km Koti-Bhadraj-Haathipaun Test trek. Considering the safety of participants, the senior doctors asked him to accompany the team to provide medical aid if needed.
His being a fitness enthusiast since his medical education aided him a lot in the strenuous training schedule that required them to start at 0530 hours and go for a 5 km jog followed by aerobics and stretching exercises. This strenuous regimen primed him and his team mates for the expedition, recalls the doctor. After an early breakfast, there were sessions like rock climbing, jummaring, rapelling and hiking, etc. Post-noon, it was theory and practical training followed by an obstacle race of 3-10 laps around the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) campus. The movie-enthusiast says that the way this training transformed the ONGCians and enthused them with a never-before-confidence, it was nothing less than a Bollywood thriller.
Dr Nitin Chawla with ONGC project on Swachh Himalayas at the background
He recounts with excitement, 2 of his patients; A Japanese climber named Thai from Tokyo who had developed severe mountain sickness but had to descend down for his safety. Another patient was a Sherpa who gifted him a rock from the top of the Everest for receiving Nitin’s timely medical aid. “We developed a special relationship with the Sherpas, which was a significant part of the expedition”.
4 REASONS FOR HIS SUCCESS
Wonderful training cum selection plan by ONGC and IMF
Best climbing gears provided by ONGC
Well trained Sherpas and adequate oxygen supply support provided by Asian trekking
Favourable weather conditions
But the most thrilling experience for him so far was crossing Khumbu icefall. “Crossing those 100-150 metre crevasses with the ladders gave me goosebumps and made me feel how close one is to death.”
Backed by supportive and enthusiastic family, he owes his success to the blessings of his parents and good wishes of his wife, daughter and brother.
“When one sees such huge mountains standing tall with all humility, one’s own problems seem frivolous.” The entire experience humbled Dr. Chawla who took this time of solitude to introspect his life and become a self confident man.
Nitin engrossed in examining a Sherpa during the Everest Expedition
Nitin wants more medical doctors to join such expeditions. He considers physical fitness and mental resilience as two important benchmarks for it. He also advises body training in gym with cardio and weight training exercises especially for core muscles. Also some yoga or meditation will go a long way to help survive the wilderness.
Now that is someone truly insurmountable!
