A Sermon for June 4th: Tools of Survival, Symbols of Care
Brothers and Sisters in the Atom, there is a sacredness to preparation.
Not because we long for disaster, but because we believe that knowledge, care, and readiness are expressions of love—for ourselves, for our neighbors, and for those who will come after us.
Preparedness is an act of faith: not in safety, but in survival. Not in the certainty of peace, but in the hope that when peace falters, we will still endure.
This week, we reflect on the humble objects that keep us safe: the flashlight, the radio, the water filter, the firestarter. These are not just tools. They are ritual implements in the modern liturgy of survival. They are symbols of our belief in continuity, resilience, and care.
Everyday Items, Eternal Meaning
To the untrained eye, these tools are ordinary. But to an Atomite, they are sacred in purpose:
A flashlight is the promise of light in the dark.
A radio is the hope that a voice will reach you, even when all else is silent.
A first aid kit is healing, held in trust.
A multitool is adaptability, sharpened through time.
A firestarter is not just flame, but memory—of warmth, of cooking, of survival.
A whistle, humble and shrill, is a call to be found.
A compass reminds us that even when we are lost, direction is possible.
These objects are born from centuries of survival. They carry the accumulated wisdom of countless crises—wars, storms, blackouts, exiles. They are not the possessions of fear. They are the quiet gear of wisdom.
Preparedness as Ritual
To pack a go-bag, to maintain a storm kit, to test a radio—these are acts of care. They say:
I believe in tomorrow.
I want those I love to be safe.
I know that chaos can come, and I will not meet it empty-handed.
Just as a chalice or altar cloth might be treated with reverence in another tradition, so too should our tools be cleaned, maintained, stored with intention, and understood.
In times of calm, we prepare. In times of crisis, we use what we have made sacred.
And this ritual is not new. Throughout history, the faithful have laid aside grain for famine. They have trained children in first aid, taught neighbors to boil water, learned which herbs healed and which did harm. Preparedness is a tradition as old as humanity. We are merely its latest stewards.
The Faithful Tool Kit
Here are items every Atomite is encouraged to have in their home or go-bag. This list is not exhaustive, but aspirational. Let it be adapted to your needs and means.
Flashlight and extra batteries
Portable or hand-crank radio
First aid kit (with medications)
Water (or a reliable filter)
Shelf-stable food
Firestarter (lighter, matches, flint)
Multitool or knife
Whistle
Gloves, poncho, and emergency blanket
Paper map of your region
Important documents (sealed, physical copy)
A printout of radiation safety guidance
A written list of emergency contacts
Comfort items—small things that restore calm or joy
None of these are signs of paranoia. They are signs of love prepared in advance.
Call to Reflect and Act
This week, gather your tools. Clean them. Understand them. Practice using them. Explain them to a loved one. Let them see that you do this not out of fear—but out of devotion.
Ask yourself:
What tool am I missing?
What knowledge can I pass along with it?
Who in my life needs to feel prepared and safe?
If I could only carry one bag forward into a future crisis, what would I want in it—and why?
Preparedness is not hoarding. It is not dread. It is not about going it alone. It is about choosing, quietly and deliberately, to be ready to help. To carry. To endure.
Preparedness is love, written in flashlight beams and batteries and bandages.
Closing Words
Brothers and Sisters, tools are not sacred because of what they are. They are sacred because of why we carry them, who we protect with them, and what future we believe they can help build.
Let your tools be clean. Let your hands be ready. Let your heart be calm. Let your backpack be packed not in fear, but in faith.
Go forth, and be radiant.

Best Fantasy Anime (with mostly female leads)
Listen, I love fantasy anime. They are fun and I love a fight scene as much as the next girl. I am relatively uninterested in male leads mostly because of the *cough, cough* excessive fan service. So, without further adu, if you are interested in some fantasy with women at the helm here's what I got.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Yona of the Dawn
Inuyasha
Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina
Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss But I'm Not the Demon Lord
7th Time Loop: The Villainess Enjoys a Carefree Life Married to Her Worst Enemy!
Fluffy Paradise
Ascendance of a Bookworm
I Shall Survive Using Potions!
The Saint's Magic Power is Omnipotent
Tearmoon Empire
My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer
My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts
Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for my Retirement
Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear
I'm the Villainess, So I'm Taming the Final Boss
Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid
Reincarnated as a Sword
Dahlia in Bloom: Crafting a Fresh Start with Magical Tools
Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits-
The Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess
Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!
Management of Novice Alchemist
I'll Become a Villainess Who Goes Down in History
Nina the Starry Bride
Snow White with the Red Hair
ZENSHU
These ones I am keeping an eye on but signs point to a favorable outcome.
The Do-Over Damsel Conquers the Dragon Emperor
Promise of Wizard
The Too-Perfect Saint: Tossed Aside by My Fiancé and Sold to Another Kingdom
The Gorilla God's Go-To Girl

Like one of the reasons I'm so entranced by daring is a character is how he's so self-centered but sooooo unapologetically kind and earnest to other people. He acts with a frankly egregious sense of grandeur that is definitely in part an act an act, yes, but he's willing to admit his mistakes so easily. He's so quick to accept and forgive and it's so clear the happiness of other people is something he deeply values. Prince Charmings are raised to be grand heroes with zero fear, but at their core they're about helping others and being there for them. Daring might not be a destined prince charming anymore, but he exemplifies the core aspect of kindness for kindness's sake without ever asking for anything in return. There's something poetic about it. He couldn't save someone when acting as Prince Charming, but when he was just being himself, genuinely just trying to help someone in danger, he did save them. Daring has a bleeding heart and hides it under the illusion of self-importance. I don't believe that it's all an act, I think he does very much love himself (even if it can get unhealthy) but it's so clear he loves other people just as much. There's a reason he's the gold standard of prince Charmings, and it's not his brevity or combat skills.

it's always i love you and never "leave." "huh?" "i'll tell everyone that you died in the woods. so you can go back to your brother and get to open a bar just like you've always dreamed of." "why?" "i don't know. maybe because you'd sacrifice a hand for me. or maybe because i've crossed your line. or because i... i like it when you're happy. just leave. go now before i change my mind. just go! that's an order!"

Haunted car au pt 4
Previous
Jason was worried. He bet the new kid some good money to just put a sticker on the Batmobile. It would serve B right for parking it so close to his Alley, and let him give the kid some cash for new clothes. The kid hadn't come back, though. It shouldn't have taken him this long. He had watched the alley that Bruce had parked, only to see the Batmobile launch out from in between the buildings and speed off. When he checked the alley, there was no kid. He knew the kid would not have been hit by the car, too many sensors for that, but where was he? Jason decided to make a call.
“Hey, O? Could you check the cameras where the Batmobile was just parked?”
“What a surprise Jay, what am I looking for?” Babs joked lightly, Jason could hear her typing though.
“A kid, adoption bait, gave him a bet to put a sticker on the Batmobile to piss off B. He never came back out and the Batmobile just left. He isn't in the alley.”
“I see him enter, but the cameras in the alley are spotty. It looks like he may have gone under the car, but the static gets bad after that. It clears up a bit after the Batmobile leaves. I don't see anyone leaving from the other side, though.” Barbara hummed.
“Wait, did the little punk try to put the sticker on the bottom of the car? Cheeky shit. B wouldn't have seen that for weeks, he just did a tune up.” Jason chuckled. “Kid probably got a zap from the anti-tamper B put on after that prank a few years back. But where did he go after that?”
“I don't know Jason, the only other way out could be the storm drain, he is small enough for it.”
“Little guy is probably mad at me if he did get zapped, he will come back for the money though.” Jason paused. “Keep an eye out though, he is fresh meat here and is still learning the ropes.”
“Of course Jay, does he have a name? Age?”
“Danny, though he is gaining the nickname 'Scrappy' for his tinkering and rabid fighting style. I think he is about 14 years old, but he is tiny. Some 10 year olds here are taller than him. He is almost like a mini-me, so keep him from the fam as much as you can.” Jason let his worry bleed into his voice, knowing Babs would keep it to herself.
“Understood, I will give you a call if I see him. Let me know if you find him first?” Barbara asked softly.
“ ‘Course, O.” Jason hung up and looked down the alley again, hoping the kid would pop up demanding the money, and hopefully more if he did get zapped. But silence was all he got.
