Time! (Teaser for Part 1 which is coming tomorrow!!)
A/N: Teaser for my new series coming tomorrow!! Reblog/comment to be put on the tag list :)
Summary: Spencer tells the reader he wants to try for a baby. Not long after they’re expecting.
Pairings: Spencer x Pregnant!reader
Warnings: The implication of sex? swearing
You laid on top of your husband, chest to chest. Your left ear resting on his sweater, your right being serenaded by The Sleeping Beauty played by The Academy of St. Christopher Orchestra. The two of you loved to put on a record and lay together on lazy Sundays.
The rise and fall of his chest was soft, like he didn’t want to bother your laying figure too much. Your eyes stay closed as you took in the moment. Beautiful music, Spencers cologne, the gentle sound of his heartbeat. His right hand laid on the back of your head, thumbing circles over your hair. You wanted to stay there forever.
Spencer put a finger under your chin and lifted ever so gently, so you were looking up at him. He whispered something about how beautiful you looked.
“Thank you Sp-”
“Have my baby Y/N.” He asked, gazing into your doe eyes.
You took a moment to think. You’d been together for years, although your marriage was only a year in the making. You had both expressed in passing that you’d love to have children.
“We both have work.” You frowned
“Quit. You hate your job. I make enough to support the both of us.”
You were having a hard time finding a reason to say no. That all sounded fantastic. “I can’t think of why I’d say no.”
“So say yes.” he begged pulling you closer.
You were eye to eye. He was using his expressions to plead with you.
“I’ll get fat, and I’ll be grouchy.”
“I’ll feed you well and let you gripe all day long.”
“I’d be at home all by myself while you worked.”
“I’ll stop teaching so I can be here more often.”
“I don’t want you to have to do that.”
“I want to do that.”
“You’ve really been thinking about this, Spence.”
“Since the day we said ‘I do’.”
He pulled you up so you were nearly touching noses.
“Please Y/N,” he pleaded “have my baby.”
You touched your right hand to the side of his face, then up into his hair while you gazed at each other.
“Alright.” You smiled.
“Yes?” He sat up, taking you with him. You now straddled his legs.
“Yes.”
-
This was your third month of trying for a baby. You were ovulating and hoping this would be the month.
“Stop pacing you’re making me nervous.”
Spencer stopped in the doorway between your bedroom and bathroom. “Sorry.”
His small digital watch beeped. Why the hell does he even have that thing? You picked up the face down test, but didn’t turn it over.
“It’s been five minutes.”
“Want me to look?” He asked reaching a hand out.
You flipped it around to him and looked at his face for answers.
His brows furrowed and he leaned in closer, probably forgetting there was pee on it. He shifted back and grabbed the box off the bathroom counter. Looking back and forth between the box and test.
He looked up at you with his what the fuck did we do? eyes.
“What?” You asked hurriedly.
“Y/N you’re pregnant.” He gulped.
“I’m pregnant?” You asked as if you both didn’t do this on purpose.
Spencer rubbed the back of his knuckles whispering to himself like he was thinking out loud.
“Holy shit, Spence.” You smiled at him. “I’m pregnant.”
You saw a smile form behind his hand.
That’s all for now!! Part 1 comes out tomorrow night :) Comment/reblog to be tagged!!

The Morning After - The Year the Oscars Got it (mostly) Right Edition
The 92nd Academy Awards kicked off looking an awful lot like the Grammy’s with a splashy musical performance by Janelle Monae and Billy Porter, the first of a night’s performances/presenters/commentary designed to include all the groups it seemingly excluded in it’s nominees list. Meant to poke fun at themselves or a gesture delivered a little too overt and a little too late? Either way, I think in the end, the artistry of the South Korean-made foreign language film that swept the night’s awards won one back for every group that was overlooked.
Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite took home awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best International Feature, Best Director, and Best Picture, making it the first South Korean film to win in all these categories. To do it all in a single evening is astounding.
Here’s a look at all the winners of the night:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Best Picture:
“Ford v Ferrari” — Walt Disney “The Irishman” — Netflix “Jojo Rabbit” — Fox Searchlight “Joker” — Warner Bros. “Little Women” — Sony Pictures Releasing “Marriage Story” — Netflix “1917” — Universal/Amblin Partners “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” — Sony Pictures Releasing “Parasite” — Neon (WINNER)
Most deserving win of the night!!! Of course many of us hoped Parasite could be the underdog to win it all, but a more realistic prediction to win would be 1917. Thrilled to be wrong on this one.
Also, while I liked 1917 (more for its execution than story), even if Parasite had not been in the mix, I would have been rooting for The Irishman to win.
Lead Actress:
Cynthia Erivo, “Harriet” Scarlett Johansson, “Marriage Story” Saoirse Ronan, “Little Women” Charlize Theron, “Bombshell” Renée Zellweger, “Judy” (WINNER)
I am also in full agreement with this category and with Renee sweeping this category this awards season as well.
I have not seen Harriet, but if Renee hadn’t been in the race, Charlize would have been the best of the bunch.
Lead Actor:
Antonio Banderas, “Pain and Glory” Leonardo DiCaprio, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” Adam Driver, “Marriage Story” Joaquin Phoenix, “Joker” — (WINNER) Jonathan Pryce, “The Two Popes”
Again, no question this was the right winner. If only every win didn’t mean we’d have to roll the dice to see what kind of acceptance speech we’d have to endure... While I didn’t appreciate being chastised for adding milk to my coffee, Joaquin closed out his remarks by quoting his late brother River and I thought that was beautiful.
Director:
Martin Scorsese, “The Irishman” Todd Phillips, “Joker” Sam Mendes, “1917” Quentin Tarantino, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” Bong Joon Ho, “Parasite” — (WINNER)
Another category that I thought the Academy would give to Sam Mendes, but nonetheless put my bets on Bong Joon-ho. Some big competition in this category (except Phillips... sorry, I’m not saying he’s bad, but he has yet to prove to me he’s a contender).
Original Song:
“I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away,” “Toy Story 4” “I’m Gonna Love Me Again,” “Rocketman” — (WINNER) “I’m Standing With You,” “Breakthrough” “Into the Unknown,” “Frozen 2” “Stand Up,” “Harriet”
Talk about a year of forgettable film songs. I think I left the room for every one of these performances except Elton’s. Did I miss anything?
Original Score:
“Joker,” Hildur Guðnadóttir — (WINNER) “Little Women,” Alexandre Desplat “Marriage Story,” Randy Newman “1917,” Thomas Newman “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” John Williams
As part of the montage for this category, the orchestra accompanies with each film’s original score. This segment, as they proudly pointed out, was being conducted a female for the first time in Oscar history (I’d like to shallowly add that she was also wearing the most amazing gold jacket to do it!). Now I don’t know if she also arranged it or whether she was just conducting, but I have to say, I don’t think the arrangement did the scores any justice whatsoever.
Luckily they were not being judged on this particular performance, and Hildur Guonadottir once again took home the accolade for Joker. I agree with this win. Little Women and 1917 also had impressive scores. Marriage Story didn’t particularly catch my attention, and while Star Wars’ themes will always be among my all time favourites, The Rise of Skywalker wasn’t particularly outstanding out of the saga.
Best International Feature Film:
“Corpus Christi,” Jan Komasa “Honeyland,” Tamara Kotevska, Ljubo Stefanov “Les Miserables,” Ladj Ly “Pain and Glory,” Pedro Almodóvar “Parasite,” Bong Joon Ho — (WINNER)
If anyone else had won we would have rioted right?
Makeup and Hair:
“Bombshell” — (WINNER) “Joker” “Judy” “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” “1917”
Got this prediction correct, while not the most obvious frontrunner perhaps, a lot of subtle effort was put in to transform cast into their characters.
Visual Effects:
“Avengers: Endgame” “The Irishman” “The Lion King” “1917” — (WINNER) “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”
It’s naive of me, but seeing 1917 win for Visual Effects almost takes away from my appreciation of the film in some ways because in my head, I’d still like to think of all films outside of fantasy and sci-fi as largely real. I know it’s not the case and that even your average period drama is created largely with effects these days, it can’t help but ruin the magic a little.
Also I had guessed Avengers: Endgame would win.
And we all think that The Irishman is on this list for de-aging technologies alone right?
Film Editing:
“Ford v Ferrari,” Michael McCusker, Andrew Buckland — (WINNER) “The Irishman,” Thelma Schoonmaker “Jojo Rabbit,” Tom Eagles “Joker,” Jeff Groth “Parasite,” Jinmo Yang
This entire list is on par with each other I think, with Ford v Ferrari just edging out the rest. Also the editing is what made the film so dynamic, there was little room for a bad cut, whereas the others might have little bit more room to err.
Many might disagree but I think Little Women should have been considered in this category. The film’s editing choices was one of its main criticisms, but I think it actually made the film much more dynamic and differentiated it from previous adaptations. (If only they’d used a bit more of The Irishman’s aging/de-aging effects)
Cinematography:
“The Irishman,” Rodrigo Prieto “Joker,” Lawrence Sher “The Lighthouse,” Jarin Blaschke “1917,” Roger Deakins — (WINNER) “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Robert Richardson
Agree! Cool camera work in 1917 for sure.
Sound Mixing:
“Ad Astra” “Ford v Ferrari” “Joker” “1917” — (WINNER) “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”
Um ok, if you’re going to split the sound categories between two films. I would’ve said Ford v Ferrari for both.
Sound Editing:
“Ford v Ferrari,” Don Sylvester — (WINNER) “Joker,” Alan Robert Murray “1917,” Oliver Tarney, Rachel Tate “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Wylie Stateman “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” Matthew Wood, David Acord
Agree. Hopefully everyone who wanted to see this film caught it in theatres, the sound was a huge contributing factor to the enjoyment of this film.
Supporting Actress:
Kathy Bates, “Richard Jewell” Laura Dern, “Marriage Story” — (WINNER) Scarlett Johansson, “Jojo Rabbit” Florence Pugh, “Little Women” Margot Robbie, “Bombshell”
Little surprise when Laura Dern swept this category, even though I maintain she wasn’t better than the rest. That said, I’m not sure who I would pick in her place, I say share the love between Laura Dern, Scarlett Johansson, and Florence Pugh (yes, I just said Amy March should get an oscar... I see the irony of this too)
Best Documentary Short Subject:
“In the Absence,” Yi Seung-Jun and Gary Byung-Seok Kam “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone,” Carol Dysinger — (WINNER) “Life Overtakes Me,” Kristine Samuelson and John Haptas “St. Louis Superman,” Smriti Mundhra and Sami Khan “Walk Run Cha-Cha,” Laura Nix
I didn’t see any of the shorts this year, my bad. The winner sounds hella interestering!
Best Documentary Feature:
“American Factory,” Julia Reichert, Steven Bognar — (WINNER) “The Cave,” Feras Fayyad “The Edge of Democracy,” Petra Costa “For Sama,” Waad Al-Kateab, Edward Watts “Honeyland,” Tamara Kotevska, Ljubo Stefanov
I only saw American Factory and The Cave and I actually liked The Cave better. That said I felt strongly that American Factory had the edge, for starters it was backed by the Obamas’ production company. I didn’t love American Factory but I do feel it’s a timely piece that shows two sides of the story, inevitable prejudices based on what we’ve become conditioned to physically, mentally, socially, and also how important it is that we try to overcome or build a bridge to find solutions for the greater good.
Costume Design:
”The Irishman,” Sandy Powell, Christopher Peterson “Jojo Rabbit,” Mayes C. Rubeo “Joker,” Mark Bridges “Little Women,” Jacqueline Durran — (WINNER) “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Arianne Phillips
For a historical drama, I really didn’t find the costumes of Little Women to be that spectacular (I’m having visions of The Age of Innocence when you say Best Costume), though a part of me knows the period films win more often than not. While I think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is strong contender, Jojo Rabbit should have won.
Production Design:
“The Irishman,” Bob Shaw and Regina Graves “Jojo Rabbit,” Ra Vincent and Nora Sopkova “1917,” Dennis Gassner and Lee Sandales “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Barbara Ling & Nancy Haigh (WINNER) “Parasite,” Lee Ha-Jun and Cho Won Woo, Han Ga Ram and Cho Hee
Yes! Once Upon a Time was a bit overrated (sorry Quentin) but this was one category where it really deserved to win, from the western sets, film studio lots, to the wardrobe and streets of the 60′s, lots of fun and spirit captured in the production design.
Best Live Action Short Film:
“Brotherhood,” Meryam Joobeur “Nefta Football Club,” Yves Piat “The Neighbors’ Window,” Marshall Curry — (WINNER) “Saria,” Bryan Buckley “A Sister,” Delphine Girard
Adapted Screenplay:
“The Irishman,” Steven Zaillian “Jojo Rabbit,” Taika Waititi — (WINNER) “Joker,” Todd Phillips, Scott Silver “Little Women,” Greta Gerwig “The Two Popes,” Anthony McCarten
I love that Taika Waititi is an Oscar winner. Also shouts to Greta Gerwig for making Little Women almost tolerable in her script! The Two Popes could not have been an easy adaptation either. Now can a comic book expert please tell me, how much of Joker is really from existing stories in comics, and how much was filled in by the writers? I understand why it was an adapted screenplay, but I feel like material like this almost completely open to interpretation and could easily be written anew as an original screenplay.
Original Screenplay:
“Knives Out,” Rian Johnson “Marriage Story,” Noah Baumbach “1917,” Sam Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Quentin Tarantino “Parasite,” Bong Joon Ho, Jin Won Han — (WINNER)
Just for fun, my ranking of the original screenplay nominees from best to alright:
1) Parasite, 2) Knives Out, 3) Marriage Story, 4) 1917, 5) Once Upon a Time
Animated Short:
“Dcera,” Daria Kashcheeva “Hair Love,” Matthew A. Cherry — (WINNER) “Kitbull,” Rosana Sullivan “Memorable,” Bruno Collet “Sister,” Siqi Song
I keep hearing great things about this short!
Animated Feature:
“How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” Dean DeBlois “I Lost My Body,” Jeremy Clapin “Klaus,” Sergio Pablos “Missing Link,” Chris Butler “Toy Story 4,” Josh Cooley — (WINNER)
I clearly didn’t watch any animated films this year because I didn’t even know there were new How to Train Your Dragon and Toy Story films released.
Supporting Actor:
Tom Hanks, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” Anthony Hopkins, “The Two Popes” Al Pacino, “The Irishman” Joe Pesci, “The Irishman” Brad Pitt, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” — (WINNER)
Overall, if Brad Pitt sweeping this category means I get to hear at least one great speech per awards, then I’m ok with this. My personal ranking:
1) Al Pacino, 2) Joe Pesci, 3) Tom Hanks, 4) Brad Pitt, 5) Anthony Hopkins. I had to debate over Pacino and Pesci’s performances, I feel like this is one of the best problems in the world.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prior to the start of the show, I made a mess of notes about who I thought would win, who I thought should win, and shared my Oscar Pool Picks which were based on a mix of the two... My Oscar pool are an extremely knowledgeable bunch, and with 18/24, it only put me in a 3-way tie for third place (there were also three winners who split the winnings), I need to move back to the baby leagues!
If you were following my Twitter (or care to check in hindsight...@palindr0me) I also shared a little additional commentary and photos of some of my favourite dresses of the evening.
My personal top 3 moments during the Awards Ceremony were:
1) Every time Parasite won an award - Give this man all the statues he wants! lol
2) Billie Eilish’s rendition of Yesterday (I wish this was an actual recorded track so I could play it over and over)
youtube
3) When Eminem took the stage at the end of a montage to perform “Lose Yourself” and my phone exploded with all these messages of “ Whaaat is happening???” LOL! Believe me friends, I was as confused as you were.
youtube
Aaand, that’s a wrap on awards season! Looking forward to a new year and new decade in film!

Music at the St. George’s Chapel Wedding Service
Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have shared some further details about their wedding service at St George's Chapel
Both Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have taken a great deal of interest and care in choosing the music for their Service, which will include a number of well-known hymns and choral works. The music will be under the direction of James Vivian, Director of Music, St George’s Chapel.
Mr. Vivian said: "The Choristers, Lay Clerks, Organists and I are very much looking forward to this exciting day and are pleased to be performing at the service music chosen by the couple. We are also looking forward to welcoming to St George’s musical colleagues from near and far who will be performing at this very special and joyful occasion."
A selection of choral groups, soloists, and musicians will perform at the Wedding Service of Prince Harry and Ms. Markle at St George's Chapel on May 19th. These are:
The Choir of St George’s Chapel
Conducted by James Vivian, the Choir of St George’s Chapel comprises up to 23 boy choristers from St George’s School and twelve Lay Clerks singing alto, tenor and bass. The Choir, which was founded in 1348, can be heard in venues throughout Europe in addition to its liturgical schedule of eight services per week in St George’s Chapel. Its repertoire draws on music from all ages.
Sheku Kanneh-Mason
19-year-old cellist, Sheku Kanneh-Mason won BBC Young Musician 2016, made his BBC Proms debut the following year, and released his debut album, ‘Inspiration’, earlier this year. Sheku is a student at the Royal Academy of Music and combines his studies there with a busy international concert career. He is passionate about making classical music accessible to all and is Junior Ambassador for the music education charity London Music Masters. Last June, Prince Harry saw Sheku play at an event in London in support of the work of Antiguan charity the Halo Foundation.
Sheku Kanneh-Mason said: “I’m so excited and honoured to perform at Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle’s wedding. I was bowled over when Ms. Markle called me to ask if I would play during the ceremony, and of course I immediately said yes! What a privilege to be able to play the cello at such a wonderful event. I can’t wait!”
Karen Gibson and The Kingdom Choir
Founded and directed by gospel conductor Karen Gibson, The Kingdom Choir is a Christian gospel group based in the South-East of England. The Choir is made up of a group of British artists dedicated to creating a sound that demonstrates the community they share, and has been performing both nationally and internationally for over 20 years. Over this time, the choir has become known for its united sound, warm energy and enthusiastic performance.
Karen Gibson said: "The Kingdom Choir is truly honoured to be invited to sing at the wedding of Prince Harry and Ms. Markle, and very excited to be taking part in such a historic moment. It will be a moment that we will always treasure, and we’d like to take the opportunity to wish the couple all the very best for their coming union."
The Orchestra
The Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Warren-Green, will be made up of musicians from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the English Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia.
Elin Manahan Thomas
Elin Manahan Thomas will join the orchestra. Ms Thomas is a Welsh soprano, best known for her performances of Baroque masterpieces, alongside classical and contemporary works.
David Blackadder
The trumpet will be played by David Blackadder, who will join the Orchestra. Mr. Blackadder is the principal trumpet with both the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Academy of Ancient Music, and is a specialist in music of the Baroque.
Luke Bond
The Organ will be played by Luke Bond, Assistant Director of Music, St George’s Chapel.
State Trumpeters
State Trumpeters are drawn from all ranks of the Band of the Household Cavalry, and will provide ceremonial support during the Service at St George's Chapel.
Further information on the music will be made available nearer the time of the wedding.

Frank and Chris will share insight into the interpretation of Wallace with participants in daily master classes, private lessons, workshop presentations and informal discussions. Frank will consult with each student upon registration to choose appropriate repertoire, then send scores and links to blogs and videos about the music and exercises that will be presented in the technique and ensemble classes.

*Technique Class
Each day will focus on different musical concepts from a technical point of view. With guitar in hand, we will work through: how true legato is achieved, how to render polyphonic lines on the guitar, clearly expressing melody and accompaniment, the subtleties of articulation, etc. Both original compositions by Frank and historical works by Bach, Sor, Narváez and others will be used for technique class as well as masterclass lessons.
Frank Wallace
Long known as an elegant and virtuosic performer with Duo LiveOak, Frank Wallace is one of the most prolific composers for guitar solos and ensembles of the past two decades. Wallace is currently focused on solo performance of the repertoire he has known and loved for decades as well as his own new works. Wallace plays and sings 16th century Spanish and Italian works for vihuela de mano and lute in Orpheus’ Lyre. He shares his love for old guitars from his personal collection in Three Spanish Guitars, and performs his own exciting virtuosic guitar solos and songs in Father Said. He has toured widely throughout the U.S., Europe and South America since 1976. Performances include the Holland Festival, Regensburg Festival, Música en Compostela, Taxco International Guitar Festival, Boston Early Music Festival, Barcelona Festival, International Guitar Festival of Arequipa, the Festival of Spanish Song of Granada, and Guitar Foundation of America. Frank Wallace founded and directed for four years the Boston Classical Guitar Society’s Festival 21, celebrating 21st century guitar. He served as the Society’s director from 2007-9. In New York City he founded, and with John Olson co-directed, the Second Sundays Guitar Series run by the New York City Classical Guitar Society and Roger Smith Hotel. He has served on the faculty of the New England Conservatory, Guitar Foundation of America, Lute Society of America and various universities in New England. He holds a B.M. in classical guitar performance from San Francisco Conservatory.
Christopher Ladd
Award winning and internationally renowned classical guitarist Christopher Ladd is recognized throughout North America and abroad as one of the most promising classical musicians of his generation. Fingerstyle Guitar hails his performances as being“… rendered confidently and expressively.” Praised as“… an exercise in extremes.” by Soundboard Magazine, he is highly sought after as a soloist and chamber musician. Most recently Mr. Ladd was a featured performer at the 2017 Sarajevo International Guitar Festival. Noteworthy performances include appearances at the Vijećnica in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzgovina, Mengi and the Kaldalon Theater at Harpa in Reykjavik, Iceland, the DiMenna Center in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Viennese Opera Ball hosted by the Austrian Embassy, the historic Byrdcliffe Theater in Woodstock, NY and for former vice-president Al Gore at his residence in Washington, D.C. Active also as a chamber musician, Mr. Ladd is a founding member of The Pandora Duo which features acclaimed flutist Janet Arms, and The Amaranth Duo with Icelandic violinist Asa Gudjonsdottir. In addition to performing pieces of standard repertoire, Mr. Ladd has premiered numerous new works by composers such as Kenneth Steen, Robert Carl, Nolan Stolz, Lief Ellis, Kathryn Swanson, Ty Alan Emerson, Ernst Bacon, Phillip Houghton and Frank Wallace. Recently he had the opportunity to work with GRAMMY and Academy Award winning composer John Corigliano, in a performance of his work Troubadours for guitar and chamber orchestra conducted by Edward Cumming. Mr. Ladd currently serves on the faculty of The Hartt School in West Hartford, Connecticut, as an Artist/Teacher, Director of The Hartt School Guitar Festival, and as the Chair of the Guitar and Harp Program.

Paolo Zanzu
The festival's opening concert will be performed by Paolo Zanzu, an Italian harpsichordist with very European credentials. With his virtuosity and his liveliness, Paolo will focus on the period from the late 17th century to the mid-18th century, featuring compositions by Bach, Babell, Handel, and Scarlatti.
Biography: Paolo Zanzu, harpsichordist, fortepianist and conductor, first studied in Italy where he was born, then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and after that at the Royal Academy of Music in London, with Noëlle Spieth, Christophe Rousset, Kenneth Weiss, Carole Cerasi and Patrick Cohen, among others.
At a young age he participated in ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras, The English Baroque Soloists, and Le Concert d'Astrée as continuo player, performing in theaters the world over: Paris (Opéra Garnier, Salle Pleyel, Philharmonie, Théâtre des Champs Elysées); London (Royal Albert Hall, Barbican Center, Cadogan Hall); Berlin (Philharmonie); Madrid (Teatro Real); New York (Brooklyn Academy of Music); Beijing (Opera), and others. Since 2008, he has been working with Les Arts Florissants, beginning as continuo player before becoming William Christie's musical assistant, and in 2016 he conducted (in alternation with Christie) a new production of the comédie-ballet Monsieur de Pourceaugnac by Lully and Molière, staged by Clément Hervieu-Léger at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord in Paris. Paolo Zanzu is regularly invited as a soloist by top leading festivals around the world (London BBC Proms, Oude Muziek Festival Utrecht, La Chaise Dieu, Festival de Radio France Occitanie, Cartagena International Music Festival…). In 2015 he began a complete cycle of Schubert's piano Sonatas at the Cobbe Collection, in Hatchlands, England. Five days to celebrate Central, LR Nine
A guide to the coming events.
Events marking the 60th anniversary of the desegregation of Central High School by nine African-American schoolchildren started weeks ago, but here's what's happening in the five-day run-up to the commemoration ceremony on Sept. 25 and in days following.
THURSDAY 9/21
'Education by Design: The History and Design of Little Rock Central High School and Dunbar Jr./Sr. High School.' 6 p.m. Dunbar Magnet Middle School, 1100 Wright Ave., preceded by 5 p.m. reception at Pyramid Art, Books and Custom Framing, 1001 Wright Ave., and 5:50 p.m. unveiling of works by Dunbar and Central High School students in the Dunbar Sculpture Garden behind the school building. Free.
The architecture of the Central High School (opened in 1927) and Dunbar (1929) — both the work of Little Rock's Wittenberg and Deloney firm — and how the design was meant to meet educational goals will be the subject of this talk by Little Rock architect Kwendeche and architectural historian Mason Toms, design coordinator for Main Street Arkansas. The event is part of the June Freeman Lecture Series of the Architecture + Design Network and the University of Central Arkansas's "Imagine if Buildings Could Talk: Mapping the History of Little Rock Central High School" project. (See Sept. 23 and 24 events.)
FRIDAY 9/22
Performance by the CORE Dance Company. Noon-1 p.m. Arkansas Arts Center Atrium. Free.
CORE, the Atlanta-based dance company whose "Life Interrupted" work was about the internment of Japanese Americans in Arkansas camps during World War II, returns to Arkansas for more site-specific choreographed performances. At the Arts Center, the company will perform in conjunction with the exhibit "Will Counts: The Central High School Photographs," a collection of the famous shots photographic journalist in 1957, including his world-famous picture of Elizabeth Eckford being heckled by white students. The company, company will perform again at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, at Central's Commemorative Garden.
'William Grant Still's Neglected Masterpiece "Troubled Island." ' 7 p.m. Mosaic Templars Cultural Center. Free.
Opera in the Rock will perform William Grant Still's "Troubled Island," an opera in three acts about the Haitian revolution, with libretto by Langston Hughes and Verna Arvey. Still completed the opera in 1939; its world premiere was March 31, 1949. It ran only three nights; Still was told by a friend that the critics voted to pan the opera because "the colored boy has gone far enough." The composer, who was raised in Little Rock, was the first African-American to conduct a major U.S. orchestra (the Los Angeles Philharmonic). Another first: "Troubled Island" was the first grand opera by an African-American composer to be produced by a major American company, the New York City Opera. Vocalists performing this concert version of Still's opera are Ronald Jensen-McDaniel, Nisheedah Golden, Kenneth Gaddie, Satia Spencer, Candice Harris, Christopher Straw and LaSheena Gordon, with accompaniment by Janine Tiner. Earlier in the day, Arlene Biebesheimer, Opera in the Rock's Artistic Director, will talk about Still's work as part of a noontime "Lunch and Learn" session, also at Mosaic Templars, featuring a selection of recordings of Still's compositions.
Dedication of 'United' Sculpture 1:30 p.m., front lawn of Central High School. Free.
The 2016 Sculpture at the River Market Public Monument Competition donated this sculpture to Central High to mark the 60th anniversary of its desegregation. The work, "United," by Colorado Springs sculptor Clay Enoch, features two figures facing one another and holding incomplete rings. The unjoined rings indicate that there is still progress to be made in race relations, the artist says.
'Civil Twilight: Reflections on Fear, Courage and Resilience,' open rehearsal. 5-7 p.m. Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site Commemorative Garden, 2120 Daisy L. Bates Drive. Free.
The CORE Performance Company has created a dance/spoken word event, in collaboration with local poets Leron McAdoo and Marcus Montgomery and the Central High Wrighteous Poetry Club to commemorate the desegregation of Central. This is an open rehearsal; the main performance will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 24, as part of the ACANSA Arts Festival.

Better, go see Scott Meadors' 9-minute 3D mapped video, which will be projected in loops over the evening, with music composed by percussionist Blake Tyson. Both are professors at UCA. (Teaser at renderwalk.wordpress.com.) Repeated at the same times on Sunday, Sept. 24.
'Mavis Staples Live.' 7-9 p.m. Robinson Center. $45-$65, available through Ticketmaster.
Mavis Staples has been singing about civil rights, Jesus and what it means to an African-American in the South since she was a child in Mississippi. She went on to fame as part of the Staple Singers with her father, Pops Staples, and siblings, and because of that fame, her website tells us, they weren't lynched when they were falsely accused of a robbery at a West Memphis gas station — the police chief recognized them. Stax-era recordings "I'll Take You There" and "Respect Yourself" and her moving "Down in Mississippi" bring down any house; she's an artist you've got to see and if her rousing concert at Christ Church Episcopal in 2013 was any indication, she's still got it in spades. Before Mavis comes on, a community choir will set the joyful mood. The event is a fundraiser for the Little Rock Nine Foundation, a mentorship program for young people.

ACANSA gospel brunch 11 a.m. Wildwood Park for the Arts, 20919 Denny Road. $45.

Warnock, senior pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was baptized and ordained, and other faith leaders will lead a service featuring readings from the Bible, the Mishnah Sanhedrin and the Quran. A community choir led by Darius Nelson of St. Mark Baptist Church and Kyle Linson of First United Methodist Church will sing.

'Teach Us All' 6 p.m. Riverdale 10 VIP Theater.
The Netflix documentary "Teach Us All," its premiere timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Central's desegregation, examines educational inequality in Little Rock and America then and now using the crisis at Central High as a framework. The film addresses the LRSD's takeover and asks, "60 years later, how far have we come — or not come — and where do we go from here?" The film was directed by Sonia Lowman, produced by the Lowell Milken Center for Unsung Heroes and distributed by ARRAY, the film collective that heightens awareness of people of color and women directors.
