ACADIA, LA (2)
Tumblr media
county seat: crowley population: 57,576
louisiana's counties are legally called parishes bc the french and spanish administrative divisions were called parishes, so this is *technically* not a county named after the acadia region in canada 🍁🍁so that's always a plus the guy who designed the statue for the oscars was born here and crowley is apparently called the rice capital of the world other than that not much of note, canada and rice is pretty cool though

— — — — — — — — —
Pictured above is my 3rd great-uncle Ovillier Guillot and his family. He is the 4th great-grandson of Jean Baptiste Guillot.
Today is the Day of Commemoration for the Acadian Expulsion.
While I have quite a few direct ancestors who lived in Nova Scotia and ended up in France at the time of the expulsion, there's only one family unit that I have been able to confirm was expelled.
That was the family of my 8th great-grandfather Jean Baptiste Guillot, born in Acadia in 1720 with his body given to the Atlantic Ocean in 1758. His family was expelled from Cobequid, Acadia, Nova Scotia to France during the brutal "Great Expulsion" by the British, who wanted to squelch any potential threats from the Acadians and the Mi'kmaq during the French and Indian War.
His son (my 7th great-grandfather) Charles Olivier Miquel Guillot was only 13 in 1758 when they had to take the long, arduous 75-day journey to France. His father Jean, along with 4 of his brothers, never made it off of the ship.
Charles grew up in France where he married and had 3 children of his own. They left France in 1785 to board one of the seven ships paid for by Spain, Le Saint-Rémi, to take them to Lafourche Parish, Louisiana.
Many members of the Wabanaki Confederacy (I believe predominately it was the Mi'kmaq militia), in addition to other affiliated Indigenous tribes and Acadians, who rallied a resistance were slaughtered or expelled. They refused to swear loyalty to the British crown and surrender to British colonists, refused to convert from Catholicism to Protestantism, and refused to allow themselves to be displaced without a fight. Numerous battles took place to stop the deportation with wins and losses across the board.
While no one has one lineage, I was raised as a proud Cajun despite having often felt ashamed of being Cajun for various reasons (like my accent). I even tried my hardest over twelve years to banish anything that could link me to my roots, not knowing the history behind a part of my ethnicity and culture.
Digging into my ancestry has been a wild ride, and there were many things found within my lineages that were not honorable in any way, but this chunk of my history? This has made me proud to be Cajun again.
I wish I had respected it more when I was still able to be immersed in it. I wish I had asked my pawpaw to tell me more stories. I wish I had kept up with Cajun French (AKA Louisiana French). I wish I hadn't let my cultural heritage fall through my fingers.
Many blessings to those who fought and lost their lives against the British colonists in an attempt to secure the freedom of not only themselves but of future generations to come.
[Disclaimer: I am still only beginning to educate myself about this event and am utilizing my current understanding of how events unfolded and who was involved. I apologize in advance for any misconceptions or misinformation regarding the historical accuracy of my comments.]

The Battle of Rivière-Ouelle
In 1690, Québec's Governor Frontenac sent ships to raid English settlements in New York and New England. British General Phips of Boston retaliated by sending ships to attack Acadia. Caught by surprise, Acadia was taken on May 21, 1690. Phips’ next target was Québec.
On his way up the St. Lawrence River, Phips decided to burn and loot villages, one such being Rivière-Ouelle.
Tumblr media
Rivière-Ouelle, and below, a map showing individual inhabitants listed by name.
Tumblr media
According to 19th century writer, H. R. Casgrain:
“One morning in the month of October 1690, a considerable detachment of Canadian settlers, armed for war, strode through the forest of spruce, fir and maple trees that still shade the edge of the River Ouelle.
The leader of the militia was none other than the parish priest, Father Francheville, a fifty-year old of fiery and impetuous character. "My friends," he told the men of the village earlier, "the news is about war. I just learned by letters from Québec, the English intend to seize the country to avenge the defeats we have inflicted upon them. It seems that a fleet of over 30 sails will soon appear. Already M. de Frontenac has sent detachments of militia to both sides of the river to prevent the enemy from making any landing. It must be believed that our governor is relying on your courage, since he sent none of his soldiers here. I would not recognize you were you to be so cowardly as to allow these Bostonian miscreats to land without firing a shot. You know what awaits you if you allow them to succeed: they will burn your houses, your church, desecrate what's holy as they have already done elsewhere, and they will drag everyone into captivity, you, your wives and children. Take arms and be ready for the first signal. "
Thus prepared, the inhabitants of Rivière-Ouelle opened fire when the British disembarked, killing and wounding many British and causing the remainder to retreat back to their ship. Similarly, Governor Frontenac, who was awaiting the British further up the St. Laurence, used forces to repell further attacks, destroying nine British ships in the process.
Some of the Canadians who successfully defended the small settlement of Rivière-Ouelle that day were:

Flooded Rice Fields in Louisiana As the Mississippi River meandered through several southern states over tens of thousands of years, it left a valuable layer of fertile soil in its wake. This low-lying floodplain and the flat coastal prairies of Louisiana and Texas are now home to most of the rice farms in the United States. Louisiana is the nation’s third-largest producer of the crop, after Arkansas and California. The state’s warm climate, abundant water, and water-retaining clay soils are well-suited for growing rice. Jefferson Davis and Acadia parishes in southwest Louisiana produce the most rice in the state, according to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). These images highlight the patchwork of flooded rice fields in Jefferson Davis Parish in southwestern Louisiana on February 3, 2023. They were acquired by the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI) on Landsat 9. Inundated fields appear dark blue in the false-color centre image, and vegetation is bright green. Raised levees used for water management form the grid pattern between the fields. The images show fields before the start of planting in March and April. The soils used to grow rice are also good for another major agricultural commodity in the state—crawfish. The freshwater crustaceans are grown in rotation with rice on about one-third of the rice farms in the state. Crawfish are introduced on farms in the fall, after the grain is harvested, and they feed on rice stubble. Other farms in Louisiana only grow rice as a food source for crawfish and don’t harvest the grain. Rice is an important staple crop for billions of people around the world, but it can only be grown in certain places. Rice requires more water than other crops and is often grown in flooded fields. All rice fields in the U.S. are irrigated to control weeds that compete with rice plants. The water-logged soils of the lower Mississippi River Valley and the coastal prairies of Louisiana and Texas were converted to farmlands in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In 2021, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas—collectively known as the Rice Belt—produced about 73 percent of all rice in the United States. The map (bottom image) shows rice-growing areas within these states (in blue) in 2022, according to USDA’s Cropland Data Layer. These states produce mostly long-grain rice, such as basmati rice. California rice is predominantly short or medium-grain rice for use in dishes such as sushi and risotto. The Cropland Data Layer uses data collected by Landsat and other satellites, such as the European Space Agency's Sentinel-2, to identify what crop is growing where in the country. Since 2009, the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, or NASS, has drawn on Landsat data to monitor dozens of crops in the lower 48 states as part of NASS’s Cropland Data Layer program. NASA Earth Observatory images by Lauren Dauphin, using Landsat data from the U.S. Geological Survey and cropland data from USDA NASS. Story by Emily Cassidy.

In this March 23, 2018 file photo, a whooping crane, a critically endangered species, flies over a crawfish pond in Jefferson Davis Parish, La. A man who admitted that he and a juvenile shot and killed two whooping cranes in 2016 must pay $85,000 and cannot hunt until he completes 360 hours of public service. The sentence given Thursday, July 30, 2020 to Kaenon Constantin of Rayne is the toughest ever in Louisiana for a crime involving one of the endangered birds, the International Crane Foundation said in a news release. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert, File)
Excerpt from this story from the Associated Press (AP):
Whooping cranes are among the world’s rarest birds, and are the largest crane in North America. The 850 or so alive today all descended from 15 that lived in coastal Texas in the 1940s. When released as juveniles, they are mottled brown and white. As adults, they’re about 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall, white with black wingtips and have nearly featherless red caps.
Constantin pleaded guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor violation of the Lacey Act, which makes it illegal to transport wildlife, fish or plants taken in violation of any other state, federal or foreign law.
He was fined $10,000 and ordered to pay $75,000 in restitution to the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, U.S. Attorney David Joseph said in a news release Friday.
International Crane Foundation North America Program Director Liz Smith said in a letter to the judge that it costs nearly $94,000 to raise, release and monitor a whooping crane in Louisiana.
Authorities said Constantin and a juvenile shot the two cranes in May 2016 in Acadia Parish. After finding that the one they had retrieved was banded and fitted with a transmitter, they cut off its legs and threw the transmitter into a crawfish pond.
“Judge Hanna said he would have given Constantin jail time under normal circumstances, but that prisons in Louisiana are already overcrowded and dangerous due to the pandemic,” the crane foundation said, referring to the coronavirus outbreak.
