Some assorted and random thoughts on Deliver by Tricia Mingerink.
I'm so disappointed; I feel cheated. How can at least one of the two, if not the primary question of the book be whether or not Martyn will understand and repair his friendship with Leith, and then the majority of the book ignores that question to focus on RomanceTM?
I think at least part of the problem is that she tries to do too many things in this book, with the result that almost none of it is done well. It also felt like parts were missing (for example, despite the excuse of being bored, it seemed like there should've been something showing whatever respect or relationship Martyn had built up with Shadrach that sent Shadrach out with guards to look for him) while other parts were rushed over and still others focused on when they didn't need to be.
Things I liked: Ranson as well as Jamie being explicitly drawn into Leith's family now too. The line about Martyn realising he wasn't seeing an angel because the angel had Shadrach Alistair's face. Leith echoing David with not harming Lord Norton but making it very clear that he could've while he was sleeping. Leith's blue screen of death when Brandi tells him she wants him to walk her down the aisle when she gets married and he realises that could happen in as few as three years if she got married as young as Renna did.
On one hand, there is something touching about Lord Alistair stepping into a fatherly role for Leith. On the other, his fatherly role only goes so far and it completely fails in this book when it comes to Renna (and Brandi to some extent), which was disappointing.
Renna and Leith were particularly (and very sadly) frustrating. Even leaving aside the question of impropriety/appearances, accepting the guards would've been VERY helpful. And, yes, Sheriff Allen doesn't know Leith as well as Renna, but he is also in the position of being about the only surviving responsible adult who feels some sort of obligation to watch out for Renna - and his concerns about Leith were VERY reasonable and important. Part of being an adult and a leader is making your own decisions, yes, but part of being good at both those roles is listening to others and addressing their concerns.
If the Michelle Allen change-of-heart point was supposed to be convincing, she should've dropped the sashaying over to initiate a long smooch with Ranson at the Corn Festival. Renna being hesitant to trust her made perfect sense and her self-recrimination when Michelle turned up at the battle in Stetterly did not seem at all supported.
Speaking of the Corn Festival - I did not like how that conversation with Renna and Leith after was handled. Yes, simply because of the nature of their relationship, they probably needed to discuss what had happened with the coerced engagement/almost wedding to Respen BUT not in the manner that it was addressed. Renna's actions and intentions in Defy may've been misguided, but they were an honest effort to make the best of a bad decision/situation and not something that she should feel guilty about as 'cheating on' Leith. Similarly, Leith's questioning of whether she'd kissed Respen, etc. seemed to mirror this misplaced and baseless guilt.
I wasn't expecting Jamie's desire to be a minister, but it could work out well.
I also wasn't expecting to like Keevan a little better after this book. Unfortunately, I think at least part of it was him shining in contrast to a lot of the other characters with respect to listening to counsel, having a plan, putting aside personal feelings to do what was right, etc.
The end with Leith and Renna discussing post-wedding what Leith is going to do in the future seemed...odd and misplaced. I know Keevan waited until that day to raise the Blades reborn question, but the entire discussion about the future should've been something Leith and Renna had actually hashed out before they got married (actually, before they got engaged really, especially the second time).
I haven't talked much about Martyn here, but that's because I'm so disappointed in how he was handled, I'm not even sure where to start. The beginning was promising (Martyn feeling something was owed Respen? Martyn finding out that Leith surrendered himself not for Renna but for him? Even Martyn deciding he had to leave made some sort of sense), but as soon as he ran into Kayleigh, everything just fell apart. His mission never really went anywhere, he never really worked out his loyalty issues, his brother randomly makes an appearance and reveals a bunch of new info that doesn't really seem to fit/makes things worse, and then his pre-burning (the stake seemed a stretch at the very least and overly dramatic, not to mention the whole shunning of Kayleigh on very shaky terms) reasoning and decision felt really flat and unconvincing. And if all he had needed was some bossing and yelling at to get the point across, Brandi really should've gotten through if she'd had a little more time (and even if it backfired, I appreciated her trying with a telling of a Bible story).
Chalk up another reference to Psalm 27, though (I lost track at three, but I think there's more).
I didn't like the impropriety gag or the repeated challenge/bet gag, and I'm disappointed particularly in Kayleigh for how much of a relationship with Martyn was founded and built up before he worked out his issues with faith.
I'm also pretty peeved that the end conclusion on Leith's torture was that it didn't matter because Martyn had been burned and had sent warning to Leith/Stetterly and thus they were even. That wasn't and should not have been the point! The end result and the point should've been a recognition that Martyn CANNOT repay or undo what Leith suffered, but that Leith's love and forgiveness can cover over it! What was the point otherwise?
Overall, this still probably ranks above Deny simply because of how traumatising the latter was (I suppose that might change if I ever revisit it), but there were less things I liked about it than Defy (with Dare remaining my favourite). I haven't decided if I'll give Decree a shot or not yet.

Poor Makeshift must be miserable
This also makes me think about him sitting in the depths of the Nemesis in an cold bath, though, which sounds slightly nice

Some assorted and random thoughts on Deny by Tricia Mingerink.
Jamie had me worried throughout the story. Once Leith trusted him, I figured he wouldn't intentionally betray Leith, but I was concerned he'd accidentally give something away or be used as leverage against Leith. Happy that didn't happen, though, and that he even got to rescue a few of the trainees! Less happy that he was set up so quickly with Brandi, but Leith seeing him looking stunned as she dragged him into things was kind of amusing considering that Leith also got stunned (in a slightly different way) by her.
The faking of Renna's and Brandi's deaths was pretty impressive.
Jolene with buckskins and a bow! :D I can see why Shadrach likes her - I mean, I'm sure she has a lot of good qualities, but she's also taking her role as heir seriously and protecting her people, which would speak so much to Shad. Give the girl a gun! I know it would kill the aesthetic and seriously undercut the Blades' coolness and intimidation factors, but she really should have had a rifle to complete the picture.
I'm sad that the girls didn't make it to the hideout, not just because they got kidnapped and dragged off to Respen (though I didn't see that coming) but also because it was such a great faked-death scheme and it was a shame for it to be rendered useless that quickly.
I knew the knife was going to cause problems! Didn't predict the exact scenario, but knew it was going to come back to bite them.
I have some better ideas of who the Leader might be and while it would solve one particular and major problem, I'm not keen on how that person got where they are if they're who I think they are.
The backstory connecting Leith to Abel (and Abel and Mara to Respen - I think I see where that's going and it doesn't seem to make enough sense to really fit) seemed really shoehorned in and doesn't fit with what we knew about Leith's mother/history from Dare.
I appreciated Leith being hesitant about the possibility of courting Renna; not sure why everyone else was so set on it - it's only been a month or two since he became a Christian and joined the Resistance and he's deep undercover, and they're both really young and been through a lot already. :P
In connection, it's kinda sad how short Leith lasts as First Blade. I mean, it's obviously good he didn't have to be put in such a strenuous and conflicting position for too long, but given how important that decision was at the end of Dare, it seemed a bit underwhelming that he made it maybe two months.
The bit where Leith is listening to the kitchen maid gush about the Blade and he's thinking that he's right there and she's not giving him a second look is great.
So, I figured someone was going to die (after all, you can't save everyone), thought Shadrach was a likely candidate, and mentally prepared, so was actually slightly let down that the ""First Blade's" "death" was so easily faked.
The execution scene was something else. The hymn (I assume an extant one?) based on Psalm 27 didn't follow the Psalm as closely as I expected, which really threw me during the scene (which I suppose is the flip-side of having that Psalm memorised). I think a closer setting of Psalm 27 (or even another Psalm) would've flowed a bit better personally. There was something jarring in Respen's proclamations and Renna starting to put pieces together in the scene. Not sure why, but he seemed to be trying to make a point that didn't really fit, and Renna's speculation at the moment also didn't seem to quite fit in, from what I recall. On the other hand, there was something fitting that Abel was the last to die if he wasn't the first (something about leading the way for his flock vs. bringing up the rear as a shepherd and making sure not one of them was lost in a way). I feel like I'm just talking all around this scene and not actually about the scene itself. It was very emotional and important and I'm still trying to get my head around it.
I am concerned about how quickly all the older male mentors are dying or are expected to die.
I felt so bad for Brandi being torn away from Renna, even if it was to save her. She already had lost all the rest of her family and thought she would at least get to die alongside Renna.
Speaking of, good on Leith for looking at the situation clearly and practically and coming to the best conclusion alongside Renna. I hadn't expected that the person that couldn't be saved was Renna, but getting her out of there with that leg would've been a challenge even if everything had gone smoothly.
I was kind of amused by Renna clarifying that she/Brandi only turned one Blade away from Respen because it's true from her perspective, but Respen is also correct that it's two because Jamie is also a Blade now and he absconded as well, so...
So, I knew Leith would be found out and Martyn wasn't going to let their friendship override loyalty, but I didn't expect that Martyn would give Leith the benefit of the doubt for so long and urge him to watch himself/get back-in-line. He really was trying to protect his friend while he could. :( Also, after reading Dare, I thought that this book was going to end with Leith being captured and Martyn being in charge of his torture. (Which I thought would then have set Martyn up nicely as the protagonist of 3.5. Which is not what is happening and the synopsis I've now seen for 3.5 doesn't sound like an improvement.)
At any rate, I came out of this book with a desire to reread it instead of moving on to the third one. That was more than three weeks ago and I have done neither yet. (I'm not blaming my August reading slump on Deny because there were a lot of factors, but it was very hard to pick up a new book after reading it and it did take a week-and-a-half for me to start something else and try to get unstuck on this.)

Congrats 🥳
Sending you my some of my fav numbers: 5, 30, 55, and 85 😊
(You don’t have to do them all. I just couldn’t decide 😅)
RORY MY BELOVED thank you for sending in the first ask!! And you chose some EXCELLENT ones, and I probably will do all of them!!
5. The Squadron Dad Au. I know I've actually posted about this once or twice before here and here, but here's the general synopsis: Hera is dealing with Alphabet Squadron, and they are a Hot Mess, as is canon. She's venting about them to Kanan one day and they come up with a brilliant idea-- in order to make them bond into a team, they need to have one thing in common. For instance, one person they dislike. In this scenario, that's their new drill sergeant, Kanan Jarrus, who torments them relentless (but also stealth dads them like, a lot).
(Now that I think of it, it's not unlike certain parts in The King Of Attolia)
Anyways I love this au so I'll post a snippet of it and link it here!
30. Blades of Acktar/SWR Au. PFFFFT this one. Okay so this was directly inspired by me and @accidental-spice being obsessed with this allegorical self published book series called Blades of Acktar (there's a lot of redemption and assassins and some cute couples. I'd recommend it!). Anyways I'm pretty sure the main character, Renna, probably adopted Kanan as a brother figure. The one part I remember best (cause it's been a while) is that Renna's parents (Lawrence and Anita) had several conversations where it was the middle of the night and Lawrence was laying in bed worrying about something out loud and Anita was all "LAWRENCE. IT'S LIKE THREE AM. GO TO BED" which I feel was very in character for them. I kinda want to use that in some other piece of writing someday
55. Meeting Kanan. This isn't necessarily an au-- well, it kinda is. It's a Kanan lives au, and how Kanan meets a bunch of other characters! I've only written him meeting Poe, Rey, and Finn, and I've only posted him meeting Poe here, but I'd like to write some more! Especially some of the lesser known book characters, like the ones from Bloodline
85: The Dragon Prince Au no. 2 (Kanan gets heat stroke and true love). Ahhh, yes. This was a fic I was writing for Kanera Week a while back, but lost inspiration for. It's set in The Dragon Prince universe-- Kanan's a human who likes to cause trouble, and winds up in elf territory. Namely, in this desert where he gets heat stroke and nearly dies, until an elf (Hera, obviously) shows up to save him. I actually have a good chunk of that one written (and no specific plans to finish it) so I'll share that one on a seperate post, too!
