We are in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and peaceful protests to fight for racial justice and human rights.

While the history of racism goes back over 400 years in this country, progress has been slow. Artists have continued to address subjects such as racial inequality, discrimination, injustice, and systemic oppression of black people with powerful imagery. The artworks shown here range from 1973 to 2014.

Another youth-led climate strike is planned for Friday, September 27, a week after organizers rallied more than 4 million people across more than 150 countries into the streets in a strike to demand action on climate change. ⠀⠀ Last week’s strike was intended to pressure world leaders headed to the United Nations Climate Action Summit on Monday, a meeting convened to encourage more ambitious climate commitments. He represents the voice of the subaltern, a consistent thread in his art. Through the decades, Slingsby’s art has confronted matters such as Apartheid, poverty, ‘Big brother’, cultural obsolescence, environmental disasters and human marginalisation and displacement. . His passion for the subject is amplified by representing a generation deeply defined by having grown up in apartheid South Africa. This has led him to confronting many aspects of marginalisation. His documentation of the marginalised began with the Khoi San of Southern Africa. . Not limited to their rock art, his focus spans the socio-political and ecological fallout of Anthropocene man so apparent amidst the destructive landscaping caused by the open cast mining and the impact on the once nomadic Khoi San to settlers in ‘Reconstruction and  Development’ housing. His art effects awareness and he hopes ultimately to affect change. In my own town of #rockfordil a 13 year old was arrested by RPD last Friday because she rode her bike into #rockfordcitymarket It breaks my heart to see the #racialdisparity ... @cityofrockfordillinois is the image you want for our city? While I am away on retreat I thought that I would share one of my fracking pieces of art in honor of the March for Science last weekend. Fracking is releasing tons of methane gas which heats the environment contributing to climate change and is making life impossible and dangerous for so many who live near fracking sites, poisoning water supplies. This is not good science especially when clean energy is getting to be far more economical.
