Meena Kumari in “Chalte chalte yunhi koi” (“Pakeezah”, 1972)
youtube
Meena Kumari (1933-1972), one of the greatest Indian actresses of the last century, in an iconic scene and song from the classic Indian movie Pakeezah (The Pure One-1972, written, directed, and produced by Kamal Amrohi).
Meena Kumari plays in this movie Sahibjaan, a tawaif. The tawaifs were courtesans who catered to the nobility of the Indian Subcontinent in the Mughal and post-Mughal eras and were trained in music, danse, theater, and Urdu literature. An orphan, Sahibjaan lives since her childhood in a kotha (brothel), but she wants to escape from her fate.
According to the website of the University of Iowa ( https://indiancinema.sites.uiowa.edu/pakeezah ):
““I’ve seen your feet; they’re very lovely. Don’t set them down on the earth—they’ll get soiled.” This metaphorical warning-note, penned by a romantic stranger and left between the toes of a sleeping woman in a railway compartment, forms a much-underscored motif in this classic courtesan film—the final collaboration between the great actress and dancer Meena Kumari and her former husband, actor and director Kamal Amrohi. Like MOTHER INDIA, this film coexists with its own legend involving the offscreen lives of the director and star, who planned it together in the late 1950s but whose marriage broke up around the time that filming began in 1964. Kumari (who was also a talented Urdu poet under the pen name Naaz) then purportedly became an alcoholic, but eventually came back to complete the film shortly before her premature death in 1972; aficionados may try their luck at identifying—from Kumari’s pained and sometimes mask-like face—which scenes were shot when. The central theme of the film is the struggle for respectability of a tawai’if, an Indo-Islamic courtesan trained in poetry, music, and dance—a glamorous “public woman” whose career was to be an elegant companion (and potential lover) to affluent men, but for whom a “respectable” marriage and home was out of the question. Her beautiful feet—apart from being an erotic fetish—represent her mastery of the art of North Indian classical dance or Kathak, which tawai’if’s preserved and nurtured for several centuries. The “earth” that such feet must perforce touch, however, is ruled by patriarchal society with its crippling double-standards, which decreed that respectable women (who lived in parda or seclusion) could seldom be interesting to men, and that interesting women were seldom respectable. All courtesan fiction struggles with this divide, which forms a principal theme of one of the earliest and most famous Urdu novels, Mirza Mohammed Hadi Ruswa’s UMRAO JAN ADA (1905; itself later filmed several times; see notes on UMRAO JAAN). PAKEEZAH offers another variation on the theme.”
See also about Pakeezah the paper of Richard Allen and Ira Brashkar Pakeezah: Dreamscape of Desire, on https://www.academia.edu/36264030/Pakeezah_Dreamscape_of_Desire
In the iconic scene of this video Sahibjaan/Meena Kumari sings and dances for the “villain” of the movie, an aristocrat (Nawab) named Zafar Ali Khan (played by Kamal Kapoor), who wishes to own her. The ambiguities and dynamics of the situation and of the relationship between the two are depicted in excellent way in this scene, which takes place at the Gulabi Mahal (Pink Palace) of Luchnow. According to the paper of Allen and Brashkar:
“The Gulabi Mahal (the Pink Palace) at Lucknow evokes a more rarified atmosphere. In Amrohi’s imagination, the space of the kotha is here fused with the idea of a Greek temple where the central colonnaded performance space doubles as a space of worship to the divine feminine, and discrete spaces are orchestrated in a theatrical hierarchy from the outer court with its fountains at the entrance to the inner sanctum sanctorum, which houses the bedroom of the courtesan, essentially off limits to all but the chosen client, and separated from the main performance space by a lighted causeway between reflecting pools of water. The Pink Palace is a sublime temple of femininity, whose fountains, atriums, reflecting pools form a microcosm of artifice that rivals that of the natural world. Indeed, even the moon appears artful in this landscape and the saturated deep blue sky, a studied backcloth to the whole.”
But, as the same article continues a bit further, the Pink Palace is also a prison for Sahibjaan:
“Meanwhile, for Sahibjaan whose desire for self-fulfillment has been awakened, the Pink Palace becomes a prison. In a metaphor that recurs in the film, and echoes throughout the genre, she is likened to a bird in a gilded cage from which she yearns to escape...
...The quality and texture of her performances for him [the Nawab] are now markedly different from her earlier ones. Gone is the vivacity and vibrancy of an Inhin logon ne or a Thade rahiyo as she mournfully sings the haunting Chalte Chalte, which articulates her desire for freedom and happiness.Yet it also returns us to the pathos of her entrapment in a manner that evokes the equation of the courtesan and the flickering flame that opens the film. At the conclusion of the performance, as she sings Yeh chiraag bujh rahein hain / Mere saath jalte jalte (These lamps are fading / As they burn with me), she hears the screech of a train whistle. It is impossible initially to discern whether it is somewhere physically off-screen or within her mind. The camera cranes upward from the floor to the red chandelier, recalling the red aalta of her feet. The lights darken as the escalating screech of the train whistle resounds through the performance space, taking over the song and abruptly bringing the dance to an end. When the camera cranes down again, the dancers have disappeared from the floor. The camera then tracks forward towards the fountains that abruptly stop playing as the whistling ends. It is as if the space in which she dwells, her erstwhile tomb, is now cut to the measure of her desire. She rushes to the balcony to see the train she has seen before, but this time it is motionless, silhouetted against the sky, almost as if waiting for her to come to her balcony before it can leave.Though real, the train appears as if in a vision, so detached is the spectacle from the space she inhabits. What is finally required for Sahibjaan to escape her sealed world is a transformation of environment and character of a magnitude that challenges the tone in which the film has hitherto been cast.”
The lyrics of Chalte chalte yuhni koi were written by the Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi (1919-2002) and its music was composed years before the release of Pakeezah by Ghulam Mohammed (1903-1968). Although Meena Kumari was also a singer, the voice in the song is of the great Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar (1929-2022).
Unfortunately I couldn’t do anything with the advertisements at the end of the video.
I have found on the net the following transliteration and translation of the lyrics of Chalte chalte yuhni koi:
Chalte chalte, chalte chalte    While walking, while walking
Yun hi koi mil gaya tha    I met someone by chance
Yun hi koi mil gaya tha  I met someone by chance
Sare raah chalte chalte   Walking around the path
Sare raah chalte chalte    Walking around the path
Wahin thamke reh gayi hai  Right there it stood still

As per her husband's wish, she was buried at Rehmatabad Cemetery, located at Narialwadi, Mazagaon, Mumbai. Kumari requested the following prose for her tombstone: "She ended life with a broken fiddle, with a broken song, with a broken heart, but not a single regret." Art Claims Round 2
Second round, same as the first, only better. We got some stories claimed this past week, but we still have about 92 that are up for grabs and need some wonderful artists. In this round, you can definitely take two stories at a time. If you'd like to claim two stories, please wait until you get an email confirming your first claim, then fill out the form again for a second claim. Everybody spread the word! Grab your artist friends, stuff them in a potato sack, and drag them here kicking and screaming if you have to! This year, art claims are working a little differently than in years past. We are using a google form to streamline things, which should make things easier both for you as participants and us mods. To claim a story, the form requires email, check in ID, and the identifying number of your first choice of story. Putting your top three choices is best in case your first or second has already been chosen. Please be sure you've read the FAQ before claiming.
Click here to claim a story.
Stories are listed by fandom in alphabetical order and then by the story name, with a number identifying that story (for our records). Stories are first come, first serve. I'll update the post as stories are claimed. Official posting dates begin on July 27th. Once all stories are claimed and all artists/authors have been notified, I will put up a sign-up sheet so authors and artists can choose their posting dates.
Authors, if something is wrong with the info for your stories, please let me know ASAP here or via email at [email protected].
See all fandoms in a google doc.

Remembering the 'Lara Lappa girl' Meena Shorey on her 29th death anniversary today. Meena Shorey (1921–1989) was an Indian cinema and later Pakistani cinema actress, who worked in Hindi/Urdu and Punjabi films. Credited in films by her mononym, Meena, her real name was Khurshid Jehan. She started her acting career playing a character role, as Ambhi, Raja of Taxila's sister in Sohrab Modi's Sikandar (1941). Married to her third husband, Roop K. Shorey, by the mid-1940s, she found fame when she acted in her husband's film Ek Thi Ladki (1949), opposite actor Motilal. The story was written by I. S. Johar, who also starred in the film. The "foot-tapping" music composed by Vinod became a "huge hit", with Meena becoming an "icon" for the "new liberated" young women. Meena was acclaimed as the "Lara Lappa Girl", from the song of same title in the film. She was one of the first women to be recognised in Indian cinema as a "comedienne of calibre". In 1956, she went to Lahore, Pakistan with her husband, where they were invited by Pakistani producer J.C. Anand to make a film there following her mass popularity with the public in both India and Pakistan.. The film Shorey made was Miss 56, a copy of the Guru Dutt-Madhubala starrer Mr. & Mrs. '55. Instead of returning to India when her husband did, she decided to stay back in Pakistan, continuing her acting career there. Some of her best films in India included the Punjabi film Chaman (1948), Actress (1948), Ek Thi Ladki (1949), Dholak (1951), and Ek Do Teen(1953). She was the self-anointed tragedy queen of the Indian marquee, what with her roles mirroring her life and vice-versa. Meena was born as Mahjabeen Bano in 1932 to a family of poor theatre artistes. She was made to act as a child artiste and was the sole earner for her family from the age of six. Her first film was Vijay Bhatt’s Leatherface (1939). It was Bhatt again who gave her Baiju Bawra (1952), the film which catapulted her into the limelight. She became the first recipient of the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance. She’s popularly known as the ‘tragedy queen’ after playing a suffering woman in films like Parineeta (1953), Daera (1953), Ek Hi Raasta (1956), Sharda (1957), Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi (1960), Dil Ek Mandir (1963) and Kaajal (1965). She created history during this period by being the only nominee for the Filmfare Award in 1962, for her roles in Aarti, Main Chup Rahungi and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. She won the award for Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Despite the tragedy queen tag, she was also noted for light-hearted comedic roles in films like Azaad (1955), Miss Mary (1957), Shararat (1959) and Kohinoor (1960). Her personal life was fraught with heartburn. She married director Kamaal Amrohi, her senior by 15 years in 1952 when she was just 20. The initial awe she felt towards the intellectual Amrohi soon faded and the couple started having problems. It’s said that Amrohi couldn’t stand his wife’s rising popularity and started mistreating her. The differences led to separation in 1960 and finally to divorce in 1964. The couple did reconcile to finish Pakeezah (1972) (which was started way back in 1956) but the relationship had lost its charm and they separated again. The actress died amidst penury due to complications arising from liver cirrhosis in 1972. Filmfare awards 1954 Filmfare Best Actress Award - Baiju Bawra 1955 Filmfare Best Actress Award - Parineeta 1963 Filmfare Best Actress Award - Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam 1966 Filmfare Best Actress Award - Kaajal

With Raj Kapoor in Sharda Sharda (1957) This is one of those films where the filmmakers were really ahead of their time. Meena Kumari excelled as Raj Kapoor’s lover forced by circumstances to marry his father (no kidding!). How she reforms the heartbroken and alcoholic stepson might seem a bit melodramatic but is saved from being a farce by forceful acting by both Meena and Raj. Baiju Bawra (1952) Meena Kumari started the martyred woman journey with this musical bonanza of a movie. She was so much in love with Baiju that she even separated from him so that the pain could elevate his music. That’s taking the ‘pain, no gain’ maxim to its limits. A young Meena Kumari played the perfect foil to the debonair Bharat Bhushan and won plaudits for her performance. Parineeta (1953) Move over, Vidya Balan. Meena Kumari was the original Parineeta in the Bimal Roy classic and won her second Filmfare Award for her power packed performance. Her body language, her hurt and anguish when judged wrongly by her fiancée (Ashok Kumar) and the confrontational scenes between the two lead actors formed the crux of the film.
Tumblr media
Ek Hi Raasta (1956) Made by the progressive director BR Chopra, the film dealt with the sensitive issue of widow-remarriage, quite a bold theme at the time. The complications that arise when Meena goes into a new relationship with Ashok Kumar are thoughtfully portrayed. The actress’ interactive scenes with her young son (played by Daisy Irani) are a delight.
Tumblr media
Miss Mary (1957) People who perceive that Meena Kumari is just a tragedienne will do a rethink when they see Miss Mary. She was paired opposite Rekha’s father Gemini Ganesan and Kishore Kumar also played an important role in the film. It centered around the lost-child-found-again formula and it’s good to see Meena doing a happy-go-lucky role. Her comic timing is impeccable.
Tumblr media
Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi (1960) Doctor-nurse romance anybody? This film was straight out of some Mills and Boon novelette. Meena Kumari played a nurse who suffers unrequited love. Raaj Kumar plays a hard working doctor who marries Nadira for the love of money. And Nadira plays a scorned wife who makes everyone’s life a merry hell. It’s what we call a 12 hanky film. Ajeeb daasatan hai yeh from the film still rules the air waves. Main Chup Rahungi (1962) It’s another of those unwed mother dramas. Sunil Dutt plays her paramour who later suspects her of being a woman of loose character. How the misconception is cleared and the lovers reunite and the child gets a fresh pair of parents forms the crux of this overemotional film.
Tumblr media
Kohinoor (1960) It’s a regular Errol Flynn swashbuckler set in India. Dilip Kumar was advised to play light-hearted roles by Harley Street shrinks and Kohinoor was the answer. Both Meena and Dilip had a glad time letting their hair down and it shows. The film confirmed that the tragedy queen and king can act better than anybody else against the type too.
Tumblr media
Aarti (1962) If Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi was about a scorned wife raising hell, then Aarti is about a jilted lover creating misery for his ex. Ashok Kumar brought his villainous side to the fore and Pradeep Kumar played the suffering husband. Meena Kumari played the emotional punching bag which both men abused with much gusto. It’s a weepy to end all weepies.
Tumblr media
Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) This film came close to mimic Meena Kumari’s real-life trauma. The attraction to younger men, the apathy of the husband, rampant alcoholism – you couldn’t decide where Choti Bahu ended and Meena Kumari began. It gives one goosebumps every time one watches a rerun on TV. It’s considered her best performance till date. She won a well-deserved Filmfare Award for it.
Tumblr media
Phool Aur Patthar (1966) He removed his shirt and a nation sighed. Dharmendra’s licence as a sex-symbol got stamped anew in the scene where we think we might get to see some hanky-panky between Meena and him. There were rumours that there was real-life romance going on between the actors during the making of the film. Dil Ek Mandir (1963) Meena Kumari seems to revel in doctor dramas. Here, Rajendra Kumar plays a conscience-stricken doctor who is in a dilemma of whether or not to save the life of his ex-flame’s husband. Watch the scene where Raaj Kumar wants to reenact the suhagraat on his hospital bed. Meena Kumari’s face is a canvass of emotions. The film also has an interesting ham heart attack scene by Rajendra Kumar, but that’s another story. Kaajal (1965) After Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Meena Kumari again falls prey to a debauched husband. This is mostly a reprise of the earlier film and this time the platonic relationship with a younger man more pronounced in the sense that Dharmendra plays her raakhi brother. Choo lene do naazuk hothon ko, where Raaj Kumar extols the virtues of alcohol to his horror-struck wife remains glued to the memory. She won a Filmfare Best Actress Award for her performance. Mere Apne (1971) Meena Kumari plays an old woman who is shunned by her family. She becomes a foster-mother of sorts to two factions of warring local youths. Her death makes them realise that violence doesn’t pay. Meena wasn’t yet 40 when she did the film but yet shone as s septuagenarian. She came up with a strong portrayal of an old woman caught between two street gangs of frustrated, unemployed youth, whose killing finally makes them realise the futility of violence in Gulzar's directorial debut.
Tumblr media
Pakeezah (1972) Pakeezah started out way back in 1956. Then differences emerged between Kamal Amrohi and wife Meena. Even then, after all those years, the magic of the story didn’t fade. Everyone loves a golden-hearted courtesan, so you can only nod in sympathy when Raaj Kumar fell for her. And claps again when the besotted lover wants to marry her. The great music by Ghulam Mohammed is still remembered today. And so is the line, ‘Aapke paon dekhe. Bahut haseen hain. Inhe zameen par nahin utariyega. Maile ho jaayenge.’ Sigh! They don’t make such films any more. from filmfares https://ift.tt/2vyf8L1

Love hurts: Behind the Scenes
Behind all the gloss and glam, there lies a web of heart breaks and one-sided romance. That is Bollywood for you. Love can make one do everything unimaginable. And when that love cannot blossom anymore, the picture does not remain so perfect. We have heard about the unrequited love sagas of Dilip Kumar-Madhubala, Raj Kapoor-Nargis Dutt and Guru Dutt-Waheeda Rahman. What about the lesser known heart breaks and their heart-wrenching sagas? We will take you through them. Keep some tissues handy...
Devika Rani and Najm-ul-Hassan
Tumblr media
We know Devika Rani for being the first on-screen kisser in Hindi Cinema (Karma, 1933) and for co-establishing a film studio called Bombay Talkies with her husband Himanshu Rai. But little do we know about her story of elopement. Romance bloomed on the sets of Bombay Talkies’ second production Jeevan Naiya (1936) between Devika Rani and her co-star Najm-ul-Hassan. Soon, they eloped, stalling the shoot. This infuriated Rai to no limits. It was during this time that Shashadhar Mukherjee, the assistant sound engineer of the studio, encouraged and persuaded Devika Rani to come back. She knew that a marriage with Hassan and a divorce with Rai were not possible. She agreed to come back to her husband, on the condition that their finances would be separate. She demanded that she would be paid separately for her work and her husband would single handedly manage domestic expenses. Rai had to agree to prevent any disgrace before the media and for the studio to continue with its operation. It is said that though the couple was reunited, they were never so intimate again! The only relationship that they shared was a professional one. Hassan was sacked and replaced by Ashok Kumar who became the male protagonist of Jeevan Naiya. This marked the debut of Kumar who became the latest star on the block. Hassan, on the other hand, was rejected by all film studios. His reputation was damaged; he became bankrupt and faded into oblivion.
Aruna Irani and Mehmood
Tumblr media
Actress Aruna Irani and comedy actor Mehmood were speculated to be having an affair. They had done twenty films together including Patthar Ke Sanam (1967), Garam Masala (1972) and Do Phool (1973). Though he was married to Madhu, Irani could not stop being infatuated with the actor. There were conjectures that the duo was married and Mehmood ditched Irani thereafter. As a result, he started receiving flak from the audience. No matter where he went, people began to flock around him and block his car. Years later, in an interview, Irani confided, “Yes I was friendly with him. In fact, I was over friendly with him. You can term it infatuation, friendship or whatever. But we were never married. Nor were we in love. If we had been, our relationship would have continued. Love never ends, it’s forever.”
Nanda and Manmohan Desai
Tumblr media
Actor Shashi Kapoor played the cupid in bringing together Nanda and filmmaker Manmohan Desai. They first met on the sets of Desai’s film Sachcha Jhootha in 1970. Desai, a big fan of the actress, had always been fond of Nanda, but was too shy to approach her. Rumour has it that he could not get past her gatekeeper Meena despite several attempts. He wanted to offer his first film to her, but she rejected. They never did a film together. When he finally gathered up the courage to propose to her, she told him a stern “no”.  The death of his first wife, Jeevanprabha Devi, in 1979 brought the love birds closer again. Myriad marriage proposals came for Nanda. But she turned all of them down. It was at a dinner party hosted by Yash Chopra where his proposal to her was met with reciprocation. They got engaged in 1992. It was his son Ketan Desai who encouraged and persuaded him to propose to her. Apparently, she resembled his mother. The happiness, however, did not last for too long. On 1st March, 1994, Desai had a fatal fall off the balcony of his Girgaum building as one of the railings he was leaning on collapsed. Speculations started doing the rounds that he committed suicide. However, this rumour was never confirmed. For the rest of her life, Nanda chose to become reclusive, wore only white and stayed away from the public eye, attending intimate screenings held by only close friends. She never got married to anyone else.
Zeenat Aman and Sanjay Khan
Tumblr media
Zeenat Aman redefined the image of the Bollywood heroine. With a sultry image, westernized fashion statements and films like Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978) and Qurbani (1980), she ruled the 70s and 80s. The yesteryear diva Zeenat Aman met Sanjay Khan on the sets of Abdullah, his directorial debut, in 1978. On 30th December, 1978, the duo got married in Jaisalmer. When they started dating, Khan was already married to Zarine Khan and had three children. After the completion of the shoot, Aman went to Lonavala for BR Chopra’s next film. It was during this time that she got a phone call from Khan who asked her to return to Mumbai to re-shoot a few scenes in a song of Abdullah. Khan, allegedly, accused his girlfriend of cheating on him and of having an affair with Chopra and other men. When she reached his house in Mumbai, she came to know that he was at a party in South Bombay’s Hotel Taj. As she stepped inside the hotel, she was physically assaulted by Khan who was under the influence of alcohol. News has it that no one around came to her rescue. Blood started pouring profusely out of her nose. Her face was bruised. The abuse left her with a permanent vision problem. Reportedly, Zarine derided the situation as Aman was ruthlessly thrashed by Khan. A steward of the hotel helped her escape the brutality. She never reported the event to the police. In an interview to Cineblitz, she denied such an event. Following the incident, their relationship (or “negative drama” as she would later call it) died in 1979. “I was very naive and vulnerable at that time. It was a few weeks of madness, that’s it,” Aman stated in an interview.

Art Claims Round 3
Third round of story claims are up. At the time of this posting, 77 stories are left. These are all great stories that deserve an awesome artist. Please look into your hearts and see if you want to claim any of these. Also, TELL YOUR FRIENDS. Bribe them with smiles and candy. I've just checked with my lawyer and it's perfectly acceptable to grab your artist friends and stuff them in a sack and bring them over here*. *Actually, my lawyer's words were more like "Don't do that." This year, art claims are working a little differently than in years past. We are using a google form to streamline things, which should make things easier both for you as participants and us mods. To claim a story, the form requires email, check in ID, and the identifying number of your first choice of story. Putting your top three choices is best in case your first or second has already been chosen. Your check in ID should be different from any fic you signed up for or any previous art claim. Please be sure you've read the FAQ before claiming.
Click here to claim a story.
Stories are listed by fandom in alphabetical order and then by the story name, with a number identifying that story (for our records). Stories are first come, first serve. I'll update this post as stories are claimed. Official posting dates begin on July 27th. Once all stories are claimed and all artists/authors have been notified, I will put up a sign-up sheet so authors and artists can choose their posting dates.
Authors, if something is wrong with the info for your stories, please let me know ASAP here or via email at [email protected].

No other heroine has it.’ Satyajit Ray described Kumari as "undoubtedly an actress of the highest calibre". Meena Kumari empathized greatly with Marilyn Monroe the fact that Marilyn's husband, Arthur Miller, had some passing similarities to Meena's husband Kamal Amrohi, made the identification closer. It is said throughout her life, Meena Kumari had a love–hate relationship with movies.

Remembering #Indurani, Actress & Singer of 1930's & 40's on her 5th death anniversary.
Ishrat Jehan Imamuddin aka Indurani was born in a middle class family of Delhi, on the 22nd of June, 1922. Her mother Munawar Jehan was one of the first female students of the then newly opened Hakim Ajmal Khan school of Jamia Millia University of Delhi. After graduating from the school as a Lady Doctor and Hakim, she had worked in the princely states of Zanzira and Tonk. Her father Shaikh Imamuddin was the owner of a fleet of 17 horse carriages (Victorias and tongas) and one of his contracts was for transporting female students to the Mission Girls Urdu School in Delhi. Therefore, Ishrat and her sisters Afroz and Roshan got a good education in that school. They were 7 children in all. Ishrat was the third child. Naseem Bano (whose real name was also Roshan)–the actress and the mother of Saira Bano–also studied in the same school for a short period. Ishrat’s sister Roshan was adventurous and she corresponded with a film studio and sent her photo. They wrote back offering her a job of Rs.300 per month. When their father came to know this, he first admonished and bashed her. At that time, due to his gambling habit, he was in debts and financial difficulties, so he thought that his daughters could earn money for him as film stars. sarojiniWhen Ishrat was about 12-13 years old and was studying in Eighth Standard, her father brought her and her elder sister Roshan Jehan to Poona to find work in films. Talkie films had just started and film makers were on the look out for good looking boys and girls who could speak Urdu/Hindi fluently. The sisters got work in Dadasaheb Torne’s Saraswati Cinetone. They both were renamed as Indurani (Ishrat Jehan) and Sarojini (Roshan Jehan). In those days, most Muslim artistes took Hindu names for obvious reasons. While in Poona, the sisters were getting Rs 300/- per month as salary. Their father took three months’ advance payments and left for Delhi, leaving the sisters in the care of their Nani (maternal grandmother). In Poona, they became quite friendly with a co-actor Vasantrao Pehelwan (who later did villain’s roles in Master Bhagwan’s stunt films). They called him ‘uncle’ ji. In Poona, Indurani first worked in a Marathi film called Savitri in a minor uncredited role of a younger sister. Unfortunately the Marathi film of Dadasaheb Torne flopped and his studio closed down. The sisters decided to shift to Bombay to seek work prospects. Vasantrao Pehelwan got them a flat on rent in Dadar’s Hindu Colony in Bombay. While in Bombay, Indurani got work in films of Daryani Productions like Fida E Watan (1936), Pratima (1936), Bulldog (1937) and Insaaf (1937). While doing films Pratima and Insaaf, she fell in love with her handsome co-star Prem Adeeb. However, when it became clear that he could not muster enough courage to marry her in opposition to his family (he was a Hindu Kashmiri Pandit and she was a Muslim), she refused to continue relations. She was a very strong woman indeed. Soon the word spread around that two sisters were available for work. The sisters did not know much of anything in Bombay and could not go anywhere. So producers came to them. First was V. Shantaram who offered Indurani a job at Rs.300 per month. She insisted that her sister and “Uncleji” should also get work. Shantaram agreed for Sarojini but refused Vasantrao Pehelwan, so the job did not materialize. “Uncleji” went away soon after that. One day Sohrab Modi and Keki Modi came looking for them. Sohrab Modi offered them contracts for Rs. 450 per month and invited them to the studio. When they reached Minerva Movietone, they saw Leela Chitnis smoking with a long holder. Young Indurani was impressed and also tried to copy her; but Sohrab Modi, who treated her like his daughter, told her that it did not suit her and she gave up. One day Ramniklal Shah of Mohan Pictures and his friend Nanabhai Bhatt (father of Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt) came calling. By that time Nanabhai Bhatt had already got involved with his star Shirin Bano. Ramniklal offered them a salary of Rs. 500 per month. This was more than Minerva, so the offer was accepted but in the process Indurani lost her chance to work in a prestigious company like Minerva. Their old schoolmate Naseem Bano was at Minerva and came to prominence with the film Pukar (1939) made by Minerva. The sisters did not have anyone to advise them, so they lost their chances at Prabhat and Minerva. Thus from 1938 onwards, Ramniklal Shah took them under his wings. At the age of 17 in 1939 Indurani married Ramniklal Shah, secretly. Her elder sister Sarojini also married Nanubhai Vakil, the lead director of Mohan Pictures (Azra is their daughter). Indurani had six children. One of them died at birth. The shock was too much for her and after 1943, her career started slowing down. By 1949, her last film was released. In my opinion, Indurani was a “one of a kind” woman. In those days and for her age, she showed exemplary planning, foresight and had the right priorities for her future. Being from an educated family, she knew and understood the importance of education. She ensured that all her children got the best possible education to enable them to lead comfortable lives. Her children went to the prestigious missionary school in Santa Cruz, The Sacred Boys’ High School. Saira Bano’s brother Sultan, Shashadhar Mukherjee’s sons Rono, Joy, Debu and Shomu Mukherjee, as well as Milan Roy Choudhary (Geeta Dutt’s younger brother) also studied in the same school. All her children settled successfully in the United States. She understood the three basics of life: food, shelter and clothing. She did work in double shifts and saved enough money to build her own bungalow in Santa Cruz (a western suburb of Bombay) in 1940–at the age of about 18 years! In a front page story, The Times of India called her the youngest house owner in Bombay in those days. The house was designed by the famous architect Noorani. She also saved enough to spend her twilight years happily. She spent her last 35 years in the US, enjoying life with her entire family. This, when we have hundreds of stories of artistes who died in penury and neglect! Salim ji has many stories, anecdotes and interesting tidbits from the Bombay film world of those days. Indurani’s brother Naseem Siddiqui was a producer and a director of films made by Mohan Pictures. His friend Hasan Sehrai was a dialogue writer and editor of a film magazine called “Kahkashan”. Lyricist Shevan Rizvi was also his friend. Naseem Siddiqi’s younger sister Shirin got married to Hasan Sehrai. Indurani’s sister Sarojini (Roshan Jehan) worked in films at the same time. She worked in about 17 films according to the Hindi Film Geet Kosh (HFGK) and sang a few songs. Sarojini and Indurani worked together in three films, namely Jadui Kangan (1940), Hatimtai Ki Beti (1940) and Tajmahal (1941). Indurani acted in 21 (including 1 Marathi) films according to HFGK and as researched by both Salim ji and Harish ji. Her Filmography is given at the end; please note that she was credited variously as Indu, Indurani and also as Indubala. There was another Indubala also, but she worked in films made in Calcutta and by Calcutta producers. Those films are excluded from this list, based on Salim ji’s information. Indurani worked with several well known heroes of her times, like Prem Adeeb, Jayant, Jeevan, Yaqub, Mubarak, Sushil Kumar, Yusuf Efendi, Nazir, Navin Yagnik, Yashwant Dave etc. She had good directors for her films, like G.R. Sethi, Ram Daryani, Dwarka Khosla, J.P. Advani, K. Amarnath, Mohan Sinha, and Nanubhai Vakil. She had training in classical music while she worked in Daryani productions and with this background, she sang two songs each in three films. She sang four songs under the baton of Anil Biswas and two under Madholal Master. Both Ramniklal Shah and Indurani were very generous and helpful in nature. When child artist Meena Kumari was in financial distress and her father approached Ramnikbhai, without thinking he gave Rs. 5000 and never asked for its return. Meena Kumari never forgot this kind gesture and always respected Ramnikbhai. inger-actress Nirmala Devi was Indurani’s friend and her husband (actor Govinda’s father) Arun Ahuja was her “Rakhi Brother”. When the Ahuja family lost everything, it was Indurani who paid for their monthly expenses for two months. Later the Ahujas sold their house in Juhu and shifted to Virar, but they paid back all the money to Indurani. Exactly opposite was was the case of director-producer-actor Nazir and his wife, actress Swarnalata (a Siyal Jat Sikh from Rawalpindi). They visited Indurani in their Rolls Royce, borrowed some money from her and then, within few days, quietly migrated to Pakistan, without repaying the amount. In the early 1960s, Salim ji and other siblings one by one left for America for studies, and then all settled in the US. Ramnikbhai Shah died in 1973. Later Indurani also shifted to the US and stayed with her sons by turns. She spent her time happily with twelve grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Indurani died in the US on February 18, 2012 at the ripe age of 90 years, after a fruitful and contented life. Her grave is in the Ventura County, California town of Camarillo.
