Meena Kumari in “Chalte chalte yunhi koi” (“Pakeezah”, 1972)
youtube
Meena Kumari (1933-1972), one of the greatest Indian actresses of the last century, in an iconic scene and song from the classic Indian movie Pakeezah (The Pure One-1972, written, directed, and produced by Kamal Amrohi).
Meena Kumari plays in this movie Sahibjaan, a tawaif. The tawaifs were courtesans who catered to the nobility of the Indian Subcontinent in the Mughal and post-Mughal eras and were trained in music, danse, theater, and Urdu literature. An orphan, Sahibjaan lives since her childhood in a kotha (brothel), but she wants to escape from her fate.
According to the website of the University of Iowa ( https://indiancinema.sites.uiowa.edu/pakeezah ):
““I’ve seen your feet; they’re very lovely. Don’t set them down on the earth—they’ll get soiled.” This metaphorical warning-note, penned by a romantic stranger and left between the toes of a sleeping woman in a railway compartment, forms a much-underscored motif in this classic courtesan film—the final collaboration between the great actress and dancer Meena Kumari and her former husband, actor and director Kamal Amrohi. Like MOTHER INDIA, this film coexists with its own legend involving the offscreen lives of the director and star, who planned it together in the late 1950s but whose marriage broke up around the time that filming began in 1964. Kumari (who was also a talented Urdu poet under the pen name Naaz) then purportedly became an alcoholic, but eventually came back to complete the film shortly before her premature death in 1972; aficionados may try their luck at identifying—from Kumari’s pained and sometimes mask-like face—which scenes were shot when. The central theme of the film is the struggle for respectability of a tawai’if, an Indo-Islamic courtesan trained in poetry, music, and dance—a glamorous “public woman” whose career was to be an elegant companion (and potential lover) to affluent men, but for whom a “respectable” marriage and home was out of the question. Her beautiful feet—apart from being an erotic fetish—represent her mastery of the art of North Indian classical dance or Kathak, which tawai’if’s preserved and nurtured for several centuries. The “earth” that such feet must perforce touch, however, is ruled by patriarchal society with its crippling double-standards, which decreed that respectable women (who lived in parda or seclusion) could seldom be interesting to men, and that interesting women were seldom respectable. All courtesan fiction struggles with this divide, which forms a principal theme of one of the earliest and most famous Urdu novels, Mirza Mohammed Hadi Ruswa’s UMRAO JAN ADA (1905; itself later filmed several times; see notes on UMRAO JAAN). PAKEEZAH offers another variation on the theme.”
See also about Pakeezah the paper of Richard Allen and Ira Brashkar Pakeezah: Dreamscape of Desire, on https://www.academia.edu/36264030/Pakeezah_Dreamscape_of_Desire
In the iconic scene of this video Sahibjaan/Meena Kumari sings and dances for the “villain” of the movie, an aristocrat (Nawab) named Zafar Ali Khan (played by Kamal Kapoor), who wishes to own her. The ambiguities and dynamics of the situation and of the relationship between the two are depicted in excellent way in this scene, which takes place at the Gulabi Mahal (Pink Palace) of Luchnow. According to the paper of Allen and Brashkar:
“The Gulabi Mahal (the Pink Palace) at Lucknow evokes a more rarified atmosphere. In Amrohi’s imagination, the space of the kotha is here fused with the idea of a Greek temple where the central colonnaded performance space doubles as a space of worship to the divine feminine, and discrete spaces are orchestrated in a theatrical hierarchy from the outer court with its fountains at the entrance to the inner sanctum sanctorum, which houses the bedroom of the courtesan, essentially off limits to all but the chosen client, and separated from the main performance space by a lighted causeway between reflecting pools of water. The Pink Palace is a sublime temple of femininity, whose fountains, atriums, reflecting pools form a microcosm of artifice that rivals that of the natural world. Indeed, even the moon appears artful in this landscape and the saturated deep blue sky, a studied backcloth to the whole.”
But, as the same article continues a bit further, the Pink Palace is also a prison for Sahibjaan:
“Meanwhile, for Sahibjaan whose desire for self-fulfillment has been awakened, the Pink Palace becomes a prison. In a metaphor that recurs in the film, and echoes throughout the genre, she is likened to a bird in a gilded cage from which she yearns to escape...
...The quality and texture of her performances for him [the Nawab] are now markedly different from her earlier ones. Gone is the vivacity and vibrancy of an Inhin logon ne or a Thade rahiyo as she mournfully sings the haunting Chalte Chalte, which articulates her desire for freedom and happiness.Yet it also returns us to the pathos of her entrapment in a manner that evokes the equation of the courtesan and the flickering flame that opens the film. At the conclusion of the performance, as she sings Yeh chiraag bujh rahein hain / Mere saath jalte jalte (These lamps are fading / As they burn with me), she hears the screech of a train whistle. It is impossible initially to discern whether it is somewhere physically off-screen or within her mind. The camera cranes upward from the floor to the red chandelier, recalling the red aalta of her feet. The lights darken as the escalating screech of the train whistle resounds through the performance space, taking over the song and abruptly bringing the dance to an end. When the camera cranes down again, the dancers have disappeared from the floor. The camera then tracks forward towards the fountains that abruptly stop playing as the whistling ends. It is as if the space in which she dwells, her erstwhile tomb, is now cut to the measure of her desire. She rushes to the balcony to see the train she has seen before, but this time it is motionless, silhouetted against the sky, almost as if waiting for her to come to her balcony before it can leave.Though real, the train appears as if in a vision, so detached is the spectacle from the space she inhabits. What is finally required for Sahibjaan to escape her sealed world is a transformation of environment and character of a magnitude that challenges the tone in which the film has hitherto been cast.”
The lyrics of Chalte chalte yuhni koi were written by the Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi (1919-2002) and its music was composed years before the release of Pakeezah by Ghulam Mohammed (1903-1968). Although Meena Kumari was also a singer, the voice in the song is of the great Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar (1929-2022).
Unfortunately I couldn’t do anything with the advertisements at the end of the video.
I have found on the net the following transliteration and translation of the lyrics of Chalte chalte yuhni koi:
Chalte chalte, chalte chalte    While walking, while walking
Yun hi koi mil gaya tha    I met someone by chance
Yun hi koi mil gaya tha  I met someone by chance
Sare raah chalte chalte   Walking around the path
Sare raah chalte chalte    Walking around the path
Wahin thamke reh gayi hai  Right there it stood still

Meri raat dhalte dhalte    This night of mine, which is fading away
Meri raat dhalte dhalte     This night of mine, which is fading away

Ke fasana                                A story
Ke fasana ban gayi hai     A story has been created
Ke fasana ban gayi hai      A story has been created
Meri baat chalte chalte      From those words of mine
Meri baat chalte chalte   From those words of mine
Yun hi koi mil gaya tha    I met someone by chance

Kabhi hogi mukhtasar bhi           Will after all shorten soon
Yeh chirag                                    These lamps

OF 1963: THE YEAR THAT CHANGED MEENA KUMARI FOREVER! ... OF 'OPERATION MEENA KUMARI' IE THE 'OPERATION CHINESE WHISPERS' !
Pradeep Kumari once, in fact many a times, described Meena Kumari as "the nicest person he'd ever met" & "a veritable angel on earth". Even going on to add, "I don't think there is any person on earth who couldn't fall in love with Meena Kumari".
The media narrative around Meena Kumari was always very sober & dignified & respectful. Till 1962.
You see Meena Kumari was always a very big star, from 1952 (& 'Baiju Bawra') yet not in a league of her own, but in the very top rung with 2-3 other actresses.
But her cinematic career took on a whole different trajectory in 1961, when the film 'Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan' released, & "The Bollywood Goddess" was born!
In many expert & mass assessments till today, one of the greatest performances by a female on celluloid, in history ever!
This was followed by 1962, with 3 more legendary performances in 'Main Chup Rahungi', 'Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam' & 'Aarti', & March 1963's 'Dil Ek Mandir', & within a gap of exactly 2 yrs & 5 Films, 4 of which are in The Forever All-Time Top 50 of Indian Cinema, Meena Kumari had gone from sure-shot No. 3 Of All Time, to, the most likely 'FOREVER NO. 1 ACTRESS OF INDIAN CINEMA", infact challenging the WORLD NO. 1 tag too!
Such was her craze & hold on public imagination then, that Filmfare did something they've never ever done for anyone else till today ever! - They nominated her in all the nomination slots for 'Best Actress" that year, as a mark of salutation, & as a statement indicating the "Crowning of Bollywood's First Queen nee First Female Megastar"!
Wonderful. But scary.
The reason this was or atleast should've been very scary & a warning sign for Meena Kumari, is that 'Bollywood Estt' or 'Deep state Bollywood', & the faction or rival groups that control it, akin to the criminal underworld, if we know anything till today, doesn't give free lunches, & extracts much more than it gives! .. If they were heaping away so much free historic praise upon her, were impossibly unlikely to try leave anyone even with the potential to overrule their dictat or narrative hold over the masses, & were sure to quietly bts extract more than their pound of flesh too!
AND A RANSOM WAS SOON PLACED ON HER REPUTATION, WITHIN THE FRATERNITY, WITH REGULAR REWARDS FOR THOSE THAT SUCCEEDED!
And that's when, mysteriously enuf by 1964, Dharmendra entered her film life, & via it, her life in general! Film magazines all of a sudden sprang to life, & news of "the crazy uncontrollable affair btwn Meen & Dharam" made it to all film headlines, to be continued in same vein for good more yrs thereafter. Stuff like "Dharmendra arrived at a airport one night all drunk, & upon being stopped, shouted, "Oh but I must get back to Bombay, I must. Meena is waiting for me!" were actually splashed all over the next morning's papers. Even further, of things like how Meena got so agitated in a outdoor shoot seeing her Dharmendra not sitting with her on way to the location, & having gone by another entourage car, stopped her car, & went to the middle of the road, sat on the road & started loudly repeating "Where is my Dharam! Oh where is my Dharam!", were being read by the Indian masses & classes on a daily basis now on. Going a step further, they even created fist fights & slapping incidents btwn the 2, & how she'd be regularly restraining her lover from brawling in drunken fights over her, were now the new norm. They then, took it to a tangential emotional plane, by renaming her "The Tragedy Queen", even in real life, equating her performances with some necessary strain in her own life. People began regularly being witness to Dharam entering Meena's room everytime, & leaving w/o fail in a sobbing state, & when asked about this reaction, saying things like "I just cant help it!". They even went after her husband, labeling her a wife-hater, & of how he egoistically once refused to hold Meena's purse, got publicly enraged at being called Meena Kumari's husband, etc etc. And how his secretary'd manhandle Meena & refuse her freedom. All false!
IT WAS THIS RELENTLESS MEDIA WAR DIRECTED AT THE COUPLE, WITH NOT A SHRED OF EVIDENCE TO SHOW FOR EVEN ONCE, THAT TOOK IT'S TOLL ON KAMAL OVER COUPLE OF YRS, FORCING HIM TO DECIDE TO LEAVE MEENA'S LIMELIGHT, TILL THIS OUTSIDE MADNESS CONTINUED.
Anyone with half a assessment, can see how Kamal's entire professional life, revolved around & was devoted to making her wife the best!
This was the final straw! & Meena took to drinking to numb herself to the world, determined to not lose & to continue working at her best. Do you know, 'deep state' even took away her most personal possessions, in return for her continuing career!?
Sadly, she didn't have the arms or tactfulness of Rajesh, to carry on next 18 yrs, nonetheless managing good 6-7 yrs within this 'golden solitary confinement Bolly jail' at the top!
(Watch Polanski's 'The Tenant'(76), for better feel on how this troll/suicide army works!)
Of the supreme sacrifices, India's legends made, to leave us awe-inspiring cultural history & worldly life lessons too.

All Time Best Women Centric Films Of Bollywood
Tumblr media
Hindi cinema has served as a mirror of its times, events, and the challenges the nation has faced for many years. Women in contemporary movies have gone a long way from being simple ornamental objects in movies, from occasionally being victims or powerless, to being powerful forces to be reckoned with. Hindi film actresses have established themselves as strong, confident, and powerful individuals who fight for their rights, speak up against injustice, uphold their dignity, and deserve what they do not receive. She too rejects this and resists.
Over the years, Hindi films have successfully portrayed how times and cultures have changed, whether it is the dramatic shift in the professions to which women have been exposed or even the current domestic violence against women. The ladies of Hindi films, from Meena Kumari to Vidya Balan, from Mother India to Lipstick Under My Burkha, have played a significant role in bringing about change in the nation. We provide you movies with strong female characters. Additionally, she is taking an active part in developing her own sense of self in society.
Tumblr media
Women-focused movies of all genres were made by directors throughout this decade, and the public accepted them, enjoyed them, and even desired more of them. This is a fantastic illustration of how things are altering. Today we'll talk about some of the finest female-centric Bollywood movies that got people thinking and contributed to a lot of positive social change.
All-Time Best Women-Centric Films Of Bollywood
1. Mother India (1957)
The early Indian cinematic era includes the renowned masterpiece Mother India. This was likely the first widely watched movie to get acclaim both domestically and overseas. It was an unconventional movie at the time. It's regarded as one of Nargis Dutt's most famous and significant performances.
Poor rural lady Radha (Nargis) struggles against all difficulties to raise her two boys. The locals revere him as a deity and a symbol of justice. She murders her immoral son in accordance with her moral ideals in the sake of justice.
Known for directing the social epic Mother India, which won two National Film Awards, the Filmfare Award for Best Film and Best Director, and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Mehboob Khan was a trailblazing producer-director in Indian film.
2. Mirch Masala (1987)
The film Mirch Masala, which was directed by Ketan Mehta, depicts the tale of Sonbai, a humble villager, portrayed by Smita Patil, who decides to refuse a request from Subedar, a strong officer played by Naseeruddin Shah, in order to avoid his bad eye.
The village chief's wife, played by Deepti Naval, protests against her husband's oppression and his wish to send their daughter to school. A powerful tale of women's emancipation in backward times. This is a singular illustration of how hard it is for women to survive.
3. Bandit Queen (1994)
The movie is a biography based on the life of Phoolan Devi, an Indian dacoit who was imprisoned in 1983 and who is played by Seema Biswas. The Indian police accused him, and the populace transformed him into a legend.
This is the tale of a lady who battles all male crimes, including those done by police and thugs. She eventually defeats them all and shows herself to be a powerful lady. India's Bandit Queen: The True Story of Phoolan Devi, a movie based on Mala Sen's biography, was directed by Shekhar Kapur.
4. Astitva (2000)
The Mahesh Manjrekar-directed film Astitva exposes India's pernicious social structure. It brings to light societal problems like extramarital relationships and marital abuse that have never been freely discussed.
Aditi Shrikant Pandit, a character played by Tabu, is encouraged by her future daughter-in-law, Namrata Shirodkar, as she searches for her identity outside of marriage while being separated from her husband and kid. She eventually exits the house as well, standing by her mother-in-law.
5.  Chandni Bar (2001)
Chandni Bar sheds light on the oppressive and hopeless lives of several Mumbai women who are entangled in a labyrinth of crime, prostitution, dance clubs, and the underworld. In the movie, Tabu, who plays Mumtaz, strives to offer her kids a better future, but she is ultimately overcome by the circumstances. It is a nerve-wracking story of the reality experienced by women in particular regions of Mumbai, directed by Madhur Bhandarkar.
6. English Vinglish (2012)
The protagonist of English Vinglish is a dedicated homemaker named Shashi Godbole. Shashi puts her all into her career and is a fantastic mother, wife, and housewife, yet her husband and daughter frequently disappoint her. Shashi's lack of English language proficiency is the cause of his actions.
During a journey to the United States, Shashi picks up the English language and her family's perception of her changes. Sridevi plays the role of Shashi Godbole in the movie, which is directed by Gauri Shinde.

Can you tell me a few basic things to understand Meena? How longs has she been in the show and what role she has?
She's been on the show since... October I think. She's Manpreet's younger sister and they hated each other (or Manpreet hated her) because she slept with her husband. Then she sort of played Rishi to get him to like her and made Manpreet make amends with her. She messed with Rishi's sat nav so he got lost and i think she hid his pills so he got all confused - and she could play the hero.
she also hates Andrea because she's dating Charles (who is Manpreet's ex) and does everything she can to break them up and reunite Charles and Manpreet.
She fucked with Ethan (Charles' son) pretending to be his long lost mother via text - to get him and Manpreet to bond™ again
and last week she locked Andrea's dog in the car on a hot day and made it look like Andrea was to blame for it - and told Charles she killed Jai's dog and lied about it.
She's also dating David and they had some drama about Leyla living with him... but that's been dropped since leyla moved in with liam.
and she confided in Diane about her best friend in college killing herself and that's why she always wants to make people happy and get the right couples together - because she wasn't there for her friend. But after she told Diane about that she got into her car and looked at this newspaper clipping about a girl dying under "suspicious circumstances".
She's kinda crazy but i love her hatred of andrea and she has some killer one liners.
She's basically what we hoped rebecca would become (at least that's how it looks now).
(and the actress is very very pretty - but that's beside the point)

Imagine being through so much that you get named
'The Tragedy Queen'.
Meena Kumari (born Mahjabeen Bano; 1 August 1933 – 31 March 1972) was an Indian film actress and poet, who worked in Hindi films. Popularly known as The Tragedy Queen. She was active between 1939 and 1972. Kumari was described by critics as a "historically incomparable" actress of Hindi cinema. In a career spanning 33 years, she starred in about 92 films such as Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Pakeezah, Mere Apne, Aarti, Baiju Bawra, Parineeta, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Foot Path, Dil Ek Mandir and Kaajal.
AKA Tragedy Queen, Manju, Meenaji, Chinese Doll, Female Guru Dutt, Cinderella of Indian films.
Three weeks after the release of Pakeezah, Meena Kumari became seriously ill. On 28 March 1972, she was admitted to St Elizabeth's Nursing Home.
She went into coma two days later and died shortly afterwards on 31 March 1972. She was 38 years old. The cause of her death was determined to be liver cirrhosis. As per her husband's wish, she was buried at Rehmatabad Cemetery, located at Narialwadi, Mazagaon, Mumbai. Kumari requested the following prose for her tombstone: "She ended life with a broken fiddle, with a broken song, with a broken heart, but not a single regret." As per his wish, upon his death on 11 February 1993 in Mumbai, her husband was buried next to her.

My Decade
My 2010 started with me finishing my one year diploma at London College of Fashion. I was so excited to start my new career with this prestigious qualification at one of the World’s top fashion institutions, but the makeup artist I used to look up to so much then, told me that I would not last long in this field. She broke my heart. And not because I thought I was doomed, but because of how discouraging and mean she was.
Up until that moment I thought I had to prove something to my family, but then quickly realised that I am leaving one pack of wolves - my family of course - to walk into another - this industry!I swore to myself then, that I would encourage and support any other makeup artist along my journey and not be like her. I would like to believe that I stayed true to that to some extent. Whatever she had told me did place some doubt in my heart. Just as a precaution I thought I better apply somewhere and work part time at least. So I applied at MAC cosmetics, who had actually rejected me. They then gave me a call a few months later and asked if I could cover during their busy christmas period. Once I started at MAC, they kept me on and I worked for them for another 3 years. They even offered me the managerial position, the irony.
During the three years at MAC, I was so unsure and so confused in what direction I wanted to go in. It was a part time position, so it didn’t pay well, and I was desperately trying to freelance on the weekends. I would get a client once every few months, who wouldn’t pay me much. Without a car, without a proper makeup trolley, it was agony carrying my suitcase up and down underground staircases and holding onto it with my dear life during packed train journeys. I can assure you, it was not a pleasant experience at all.I tried being part of short movies, worked with the National Portrait Gallery, the Arcadia group (who own Topshop, Dorothy Perkins etc.), fashion shows for Nintendo, and even a shoot for British Airways. But all were unpaid and definitely got me nowhere except for a few phone pictures to add to my Facebook Page.
I would come home after a long day of standing and lugging my suitcase around, and my parents would look at me with judgemental eyes wondering why a science graduate who landed a very well paid job in a huge marketing company, would give it all up to do makeup on people for minimum wages and be treated like a servant?I honestly never ever regretted my decision. Yes it was tough not making money, and spending all my earnings on building a better makeup kit or on my travel, but it gave me life; it brought me happiness, it made me want to get out of bed, and it definitely distracted me from my anti depressants and suicidal thoughts. Being a makeup artist brought me back to life.
In 2013, I quit MAC and took the brave decision to go self employed. I registered my company officially. My freelance work had picked up, and I wanted to free my weekends from working in retail. I wanted to explore more and try out new things.I still remember I had hit 10K followers on Instagram after joining in 2012 and more and more people started to get to know me around the world. Instagram opened up a lot of doors for me.Having lived in Germany most of my childhood, my parents were ok with me travelling to Europe for bridal jobs because I was able to stay with family. I think I was the first Tamil makeup artist back then who travelled to neighbouring countries for work. That was probably one of the best decisions I had made. Travelling around Europe and doing makeup got me exposed a lot more and people who were not on social media knew of my existence.
And as per usual I would still collaborate and work for free with anyone who contacted me. I wanted to get out there and try everything new. During exactly one of these collabs, I was asked to come early morning one day, to do makeup on a male model for a music video shoot. When I arrived that Monday morning I nearly fainted at the sight of Simbu, a very famous Tamil Actor. I was getting my station ready when the makeup artist who was hired for the entire movie did end up coming for this music video shoot. I was gutted. I thought I won’t get a chance to work with him and was prepared to pack up and leave. But the organiser was adamant that I stay and help out. I asked the makeup artist if I could do touch up makeup at least for a few scenes, and she kindly let me. The pictures I took of that moment went viral in South India, and that was the first time people in India started following my work on social media or even knew of my existence. It was also the first time a lot of makeup artists noticed me and can I just say they were not happy with this newbie getting to work with celebrities.
It got worse in 2014 when I was asked to do makeup for another famous Actress, Sneha, for a Wedding Exhibition. To be honest I was very overwhelmed. I did not think I was cut out for the job and kept asking the organisers why not pick some of the more experienced makeup artists. I really was not ready for such a big job. I wasn’t confident. However, the organiser told me that out of all the profiles she had sent Sneha, Sneha herself picked me. That was all I needed. I spoke to Sneha on the phone a week before her arrival, and met her a few days before the show, to discuss the looks and make sure she was happy with everything.Working with her will forever be one of my most cherished moments in my career. She believed in me and trusted me. However a lot of people were absolutely angry at the thought of me doing makeup on someone as famous as her. They could not comprehend that someone as inexperienced, nor established as myself would bag in a job like this. I did understand their disappointment, but was sad that no one seemed to want to support me.
Later that same year, I was asked if I was interested in being a production assistant for two songs from the movie Nanbenda; it was a Red Giant Production acting Udhayanidi and Nayanthara, line produced by Kavino from MYA Media. Of course I know nothing about production, but did not want to turn down this opportunity, so took 9 days off and decided to help out. The shoot took place all over Great Britain with a huge budget and an experience of a life time. I got to personally work with Nayanthara and saw what happened behind the scenes. I made great friends during that shoot, even had the responsibility of finding a castle and two horses for one scene, but went home having to deal with a divorce. Even though career-wise 2014 was a great year for me, but on a personal level I had to deal with a lot of heart ache. And no, it had nothing to do with my career, it was simply bad timing.
The following few years just had me on a rollercoaster to be honest. I tried numerous new things; being a TV host, a judge for dance competitions and beauty peagants, modelling, acting in commercials which never made it on TV, makeup for adverts, short films, magazine shoots, editorials, none were paid of course, until I found a new love for teaching.
I started teaching one-to-one tutorials in 2014 and remember I couldn’t even get two students that December. The following year it grew to 10 students, and in 2016 I had back to back students who were willing to pay whatever I quoted. That I when I made the decision of doing a Masterclass after seeing Mario (Kim Kardashian’s Makeup Artist) do these around the US. I had no guidelines nor knew how to start. Masterclasses were unheard of in our community. I was the first.I hired a small gallery space, and rented 20 chairs. I had my cousins and friends help me set up and we bought a Kettle and paper cups to serve tea and coffee for everyone. I thought the day went so well, and absolutely enjoyed the teaching, to get a call at the end of that day from my mum crying down the phone telling me that our house got robbed. Well we quickly found out that nothing was actually stolen, but the house just go trashed. A lot of us that night stayed up thinking someone did not want me to do these classes. My high ended with such a low, and got worse when I woke up to a lot of emails from our students complaining about numerous things in regards to my Masterclass. Today, I have taught 16 classes all over the world now with as many as 80 students, and for renowned makeup brands such as Bobbi Brown and Nars Cosmetics. So don’t ever let anyone or anything stop you from what you love and what you are meant to do.
Anyway, the following years have definitely been the best; from campaign shoots for Pothys, being flown out around the world for Bridal jobs, being a panelist and being a Keynote speaker for American Express, working with South Indian Movie celebrities Amy Jackson, Bharathirajah, the beautiful Sneha again, and Meena, being in charge of Makeup for Anirudh’s Concert in London and Paris, interviewed on mental health and published in Huffington Post, and my YouTube journey with my Saree draping video amassing nearly 6 million views. I know this is not work related but me marrying the most amazing human being in New York almost 3 years ago definitely was a huge benefactor in my career too. Happiness does wonders, I tell you.
Either way, none of it came easy. Yes it was hard work, but no one ever publicly or openly talks about the politics and the drama that happen in the industry behind closed doors. How not only do you have to deal with your nerves when working on a big project but you probably have to pray all day that no one tries to sabotage this opportunity for you; that no one talks to the organiser and pays them off to drop you last minute (has happened to me countless times), and hope that no one talks behind your back and invents rumours about you. The best rumour was that my ex husband left me because I was having a relationship with Simbu apparently. When my Bride told me that, my answer was “I wish”. We had such a laugh that day.
My last 10 years taught me so much. I grew on a professional and personal level. I think maturity and experience has helped me deal with a lot of it, and face a lot of it.I have some amazing friends also who are in the same field as me, and I have never stopped encouraging, teaching, or inspiring others who are entering this industry. I want to be that someone I never had 10 years ago. Jealousy, competitiveness, and hate does nothing but destroy. It ruins, and it causes nothing but pain. Fame can be another culprit too. It’s great to want to grow on social media, but do not lose your morals, values, and principles along the way. Once you lose respect, it is very hard to earn it back.
How does one deal with all of this? I used to wonder why some people were so horrible, but then gave up trying to figure out what their reasons were. I still get hate or have situations were other makeup artists try and make it very difficult for me, but the first step was to block a lot of words and people on social media. Of course we want to be liked, and we want to be a good person and set a good example, but do we really need to prove something to someone who does not know you nor like you? No matter what line of business you are, there is going to be competition. There is going to be people around you who are going to watch you like a hawk and copy every single thing that you do. But let that be a positive thing. Let that challenge you to do better, and be better, and get outside of your comfort zone. Focus on your own path and cut out anything or anyone who stresses you out or causes negativity. It really is as simple as that.Comparing yourself to others is the worst thing you could do to yourself. Insecurities do not get you anywhere. Have the right people around you who feed your soul with positivity and happiness. And definitely stay away from those who like to gossip about others in the industry. Never healthy I tell you. Trust me, I have been there, done that.
My testimony is to help you see the non-glamorous side of my job, but also see how it has never been easy and still isn’t for any of us. In 2007 I tried to take my life. If anyone had told me then, that in 2020 I will be writing a blog about how to deal with negativity, I would have laughed in their face. But here I am today, doing what I love, loving life, and not being the slightest bit deterred by the few who will always try and bring you down. I have an amazing support system of family and friends, and there are hundreds of thousands of you who support me, so surely that has to count for something too. I am so ready to take on the next decade. Are you?

Meena Kumari : A free spirit who got deception in the name of love
Meena Kumari was no less than a mystery. In her biographer, Vinod Mehta’s words:“She had several dimensions, she read poetry, had literary friends, aspired to the upper life associated and was an alcoholic”.From her father who made a money making machine out of her, to the elderly husband with whom she had generation gap, to Dharmendra who didn't take her seriously, to Gulzar whom she gave the diary of her poems, Meena brought prosperity to all the men in her life.
Birth of the Tragedy queen
Meena Kumari had 2 sisters and her father wanted a son this time but Meena was born. Her father didn’t had enough money which made him leave new born Meena at the door of an orphanage. However, subsequent to being isolated from the child, Meena's mother couldn't stop crying and was in a terrible condition. After which Meena's father came back to bring the infant and to his stun, discovered ants slithering creepily everywhere on over her body.
Examining that eerie childhood occurrence, Vinod Mehta who wrote “Meena Kumari: The Classic Biography” observed, ‘I believe that moment remained in her subconscious mind. Here was a traumatised soul. She was unable to have been a happy individual. Life had concluded that she will endure. She was blessed that this despondency was acknowledged in her roles. She comprehended this feeling so well.'
Born on 1 August 1933 in Bombay as Mahjabeen Bano, Meena Kumari experienced childhood in a family of poor theatre artists. Her father Ali Bux had moved from Bhera (Now in Sargodha District of Punjab Province in Pakistan). Her mother Iqbal Beghum was a Bengali Christian who changed over to Islam.
Meena Kumari's grandmother, Hem Sundari Thakur (Tagore) was the little girl of the Rabindranath Tagore's younger brother. Mahjabeen's father was a struggler in Bollywood yet never got a significant break, however he acted in Parsi theater, played harmonium, taught music and also wrote Urdu poetry . He additionally assumed small roles in a few movies.
Meena (Mahjabeen) never wished to become an actress. On her father's gluttony, she started her career as a child artist at the age of 7. Mehjabeen Naaz made her first silver screen appearance as a child actor in Vijay Bhatt's Farzand-e-Watan. She had to become the breadwinner of the family. She grew up in Dadar-east locality of Bombay (British India).
Baby Mehjabeen worked for Vijay Bhatt Productions' Leatherface-1939, Pooja-1940, Bahen-1941, Nai Roshni-1941, Kasauti-1941 and Garib-1942. Mahjabeen Bano was named as Baby Meena on the sets of Ek Hi Bhool in 1940. Given her promising beginning, she had no proper education except for later from Meena's earned cash her father kept a master to teach her reading and writing. Soon Meena was fluent in Hindi, Urdu, English and became a voracious reader.
