This is the latest Sketch-a-Wish voted by my lovely Patreon members for March! Featuring Jacks head-bonking gently encouraging Evangeline, hoping she'll remember *something*. One of my favorite scenes from A Curse For True Love! So these are just notes and random things I wrote down from Stephanie Garber's London tour:

● Her favourite character used to be Jacks but now it's Apollo *gasp from the audience*

● She wrote Finale chapter 16 ( the one where it mentioned that a wedding party was turned to stone and the bride's sister took their place) before she wrote Once Upon A Broken Heart, which actually contradicts what everyone believes- that she wrote chapter 16 to set up ouabh.

● In the first draft of ouabh, Evangeline was a spy sent from Valenda to the North to kill Jacks.

● She's written her next book (secret project #7) and it's probably going to be announced around a month after acftl is released.

● When asked if Chaos, Lala and the Valors are going to return she said yes and that there is going to be a Chaos/Lala scene (a scene where Evangeline is like "hey I'm still here guys") (Stephanie's words)

● She said she also has a Chaos/Lala story in her head but I think there was something about Secret project #7 having nothing to do with the ouabh/caraval universe but don't quote me on that.

● Jacks was hard to write in acftl

● Also mentioned that Legend was easy to write until Finale

● When asked about alternate endings she said she:

> she doesn't like writing bonus material

> she feels like she puts everything she wants to in the book

> they are not canon

> there is one light ending, one dark ending and one that's in the middle (out of all the bonus epilogues/alternate endings)

> she prefers the dark ending and doesn't really like the light ending

● There actually is something about Jacks liking apples and sometimes the colours were intentional

Surprisingly, I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say this but I think Jacks is misinterpreting his curse. Supposedly, there’s one girl that will survive his kiss, his one true love. But I think it’s just in the wrong order: he falls in love with a girl—which makes her his one true love—and then she survives his kiss. But before he falls in love with her, she’ll just be another girl, that could fall victim to his deadly kiss.

Also, I am completely on board with the “Tella isn’t his one true love” theory since it makes perfect sense and I refuse to believe some magical force chose HER. Her, even though her and Jacks have no romantic potential other than steamy make out scenes, which were only even good because it’s Jacks and Stephanie is a good writer.

But unfortunately, I don’t think that is the route Stephanie is going to take, because of the line from her books when Eva describes there to be “first love, true love, and forever love.” For Jacks, the first fox is his first live, Donatella is his true love, and Evangeline is his forever love.

Y'ALL. I got to ACFTL ch.10 and OH MY GOSHHHH. At his place his bedsheets were thrashed, Jacks hasn't slept, or at least has slept horribly with nightmares. Apples were EVERYWHERE. and the fireplace was burning more than WOOD?! My man was throwing random shit into the fire😭😭😭😭😭😭

ACFTL Spoilers

in which i talk about a couple of things i thought/feared would happen in the book but that didn’t!

no bc i feared that so many things could happen while evangeline didn’t have her memories, and here are two things that made me go ”oh no” when i either realized them or saw someone point them out before i read ACFTL and when i did read, i was quite glad they didn’t happen:

the letter evangeline wrote to herself at the beginning of TBONA. i love that it came up in ACFTL, but in my head i was convinced that she would find it in her room (bonus points for if it would’ve been after meeting jacks and him being in absolute pain when he realizes she can’t remember anything, and she would be fascinated to get to know him more or at least having some kind of sense of familiarity or comfort around him), and read it. it would’ve been so painful but quite delightfully so if she would’ve been so scared, not sure if she can trust anyone (though she hopes for the best and lacks self preservation instincts so what actually does happen is in character for her lmao <3) and wondering what even is true, until she reads the letter. and because she wrote it, it’s what she would have believed above everything. no matter what jacks would try to say now, she would believe he’s a threat and inherently evil because she’s the only one she can believe at the moment. that from his pov, her not wanting to even see him? ugh. would’ve been so painful but SO GOOD.

marisol. i can’t remember where exactly she ended up in TBONA, but she was last seen in wolf hall if i remember correctly? so it just made sense to me that she’d be there and when she discovered that evangeline didn’t remember anything, she’d do something shady or lie to her about something. maybe even keep evangeline from finding out something important? it’s not like she was necessary to the plot so it does make sense why she wasn’t there, but like, she could’ve been.

anyway i’m gonna have to reread ACFTL later bc i haven’t slept well so my brain has only half processed everything that i read, i’ll post more thoughts then (and before then too, i’m working on an apple analysis part 2!) 💗

How did I just realize that the book covers for the OUABH trilogy held some kind of relation to the love triangle between Evangeline, Jacks and Apollo

and the third book having a tree (there's a theory that it's the phoenix tree from when eva first met apollo), in other words possibly representing apollo

“You're in the wind, I'm in the water nobody's son, nobody's daughter” that's how Once Upon a Broken Heart was introduced to me. It happened in a short video suggesting books with the vibe of Lana Del Rey's 'Chemtrails over the Country Club,' and boy, did they get it right, the pain is real! I'm utterly speechless about this series. I devoured all three books in less than a week, or to be precise, I swallowed them without any ceremony. I cried, laughed, had my heart broken into a thousand pieces, and fell in love with Evangeline and Jacks on every page! This book is for everyone who craves a fairytale feel with a slow-burn romance, just the way I like it hahah

The best one has to be The Ballad of Never After, what an incredible story! I still can't believe Stephanie Garber gave us that ending. My chest hurt for days, unable to digest what I had read.

As for the last one, I felt like something was missing. It's not bad. I found the conclusion satisfactory. However, I sensed a gap, whether the vibe got lost in the plot or the characters felt a bit distant from their earlier selves, I can't tell. Nonetheless, it remains one of the best series I've read! And now, I can't help but think about Evajacks all the time, I just can't live without them anymore! 🩷🩷🩷

Let’s talk theories…

Jacks is obviously in love with Evangeline. I think he’s so scared that it’s not her, and that’s why he pushes her away.

I’ve heard some theories saying that Apollo is actually a Valor…the one that does something with memories. Thoughts?

The blood on the angel…do you think Apollo killed the Valors, and hurt Jacks?

I will admit I’m terrified that Stephanie won’t give Eva and Jacks their happy ending together, but Stephanie is in love with happy endings. And she’s said herself she loves to shock the readers. Also, what’s the point of writing a whole book series just to end it killing jacks/or Eva off and not giving them a happy ending

If you got the exclusive OUABH, in Stephanie’s extra chapter about the Valors, she wrote a recipe for writings fairytales. In it, it says

“When building a fairytale, it may be tempting to leave out the bitter taste of tragedy, but without it the happy ending always falls flat. Additionally, many people are tempted to mix in a spoonful of love with the magic, but that is never a good idea. Love should happen organically. When it is forced, it rarely ends well.”

I personally think that answers everything. Jacks is gonna have to fight for Evangeline. And she still has that last kiss, and Evangeline will be pulled to Jacks until their bargain is complete.

I really want to talk about acftl (an excuse to defend my husband jacks) so SPOILERS AHEAD.

●I, for one, didn't see his confession as basic. I didn't even expect an "I love you" from him at all. Jacks is an action person, not a words person. He shows that he cares, and he won't say that he does. And I think him saying just "I love you" is not out of his character at all.

●I've seen a lot of people say that one reason they did not like acftl was because of Jacks and they felt that his confession was too bland and simple.

● Because he loved her, he let her go as he thought she would be better with Apollo, someone who he had believed had done nothing wrong to Evangeline and thought despite the fact that he didn't like Apollo, he believed that Apollo was good for her. He thought that Evangeline deserved the best - a prince and castle and a happily ever after. He believed that he couldn't give her what she truly deserved. He watched her knowing that he shouldn't want her and did, but he still tried to keep his distance away from her (and failed miserably). He killed his own best friend so that he wouldn't kill her again because Jacks couldn't stand the thought of her dying again. He went out of his way every single time to protect Evangeline. He gave up his own heart in exchange for a cuff that would protect Evangeline from harm. He believed he had to leave her to protect her and despite the fact that leaving her was like agony to him, he thought that his pain and suffering would be better than Evangeline having to suffer.

●Stephanie had to break him to understand his actions in ouabh/tbona towards Eva and spark a change in his behaviour

●The little "no, not again". Don't tell me your heart did not crack at this line. He was actually frightened and terrified at the thought he lost Evangeline again. Like I had to close my book and stare at the ceiling trying not to cry. And the best bit was that Eva just forgot to breathe. Jacks made her breathless hehe.

"I love you"?

Tbh I can't and won't accept just "I love you" from Jacks. Unless it's an angry confession (like "why did you even use the stones to go back in time and save me" and then he shouts "because I love you evangeline" 🤭), I need a poetic declaration of love. I want like Cardan level type of shit. Like it needs to be poetic asf. I need to be moved to tears (tbh even a simple "i love you" will have me bawling on the floor). It needs to be so poetic to the point that I have to close my book and touch some grass. I need something that will make me have a physical reaction (like jacks's monologue in finale 😩). But please Stephanie I know you can deliver.
