Jacks is from Stephanie Garber's books:

Caraval trilogy (her first books, he shows up in Legendary for the first time; he's a side character)

Once Upon A Broken Heart trilogy (her second series, you can read it before Caraval but it does contain spoilers for that series. Jacks is a main character. I'm currently reading Caraval for the first time, and I can honestly say that OUABH is way better in terms of pace and plot and characters. But it's also super interesting to see the little hints in OUABH that reflect back to Caraval).
