Show Me Yours Sneak Peek (2)
-here's another little sneak peek of the next part, sorry it's taking so long but the last few weeks have been the most stressful of my life lol. Hoping that I can get some writing done this week as I'll be back in my accom with nothing to do
“Break up with him then.”
“I can’t do it over the phone-”
“Email?”
She chuckles again, rubbing at her nose harshly, “I can’t do that. It would break me if it happened to me-”
“He knows that, that’s why he’s avoiding you.”
“You know, the end approached us before the beginning.” She says.
He readjusts his grip, pulling her back a bit so the rain won;t hit her legs, “Why did you start dating him?”
“He listened to me… and I don't know, I felt like it was a way to distract me I guess…”
“From what?” She breathes in, chest stuttering, she considers telling him. She thinks over how it will go, how she will say it, how he will react, their relationship once it’s revealed.
‘I slept with Matty, the day before I saw Caleb… we fell out over it so I went on a date with him to get back at Matty, make him feel the way he made me feel.’
‘You slept with my best friend? Are you serious? What’s wrong with-’
“Life…”
He hums, “Not to make Matty jealous?”
She looks up at him slowly, “Why would I do that?”
He chuckles, “I’m not stupid, Tommie, or blind. I know everything-”
She turns to the door in realisation of her loose mouthed best friend, “Ross! I’m gonna kill him, he told you-”
“Everything.”
She winces, head ducking down as she closes her eyes, “Ads-”
He shrugs, “You can talk to me about that kind of stuff you know-” He is quick to jump in and correct himself, “Not sex stuff… Please don’t tell me about that.”
She giggles a little, sniffling with a nod, “Okay… not even about how he-”
He unravels his arms to plug his ears and she laughs again.
He grins at the fact he got her to smile again, he pulls her into his side, kissing the top of her head, “Break up with Caleb, focus on yourself, don’t worry about Matty or the band right now. Take time off if you need it-”
She shakes her head, “I’m not quitting the band.”
“It’s not quitting, more like taking a break. No one will know, we’ll say you’re ill or something.”
She shakes her head, “I’m not leaving, not taking a break. I’m fine.”
“Don’t push yourself.”
“It’s not a push, more of a slow drag.” She says which has him laughing again as he shakes her a little.
“Promise me if it gets too much you’ll just stop. Go home, have time to yourself. I’ll come with you if you need it.”
She nods, lifting her hand and they link pinky fingers, “I will, Ads, don’t worry.”
“I always worry.”

Terlingua Girl - Pt.1
Tumblr media
Matty Healy x Cowgirl!OC
A/N: she’s here!! It’s mostly preamble so things make sense in the future but nonetheless she is HEREEEEEE! Enjoy hotties.
Word Count: 1378
Warnings: none.
———
For the first time in a long time, Matty Healy is completely silent. Sitting in the last row of the large black SUV, looking wistfully out the window sits an utterly quiet Matty. Dark curls tousled, eye bags prominent, it's almost unsettling to the rest of the boys on the “detox” that his headphones haven't left his ears since the plane ride here.
He’s in his head, swirling thoughts of past conversations, paths he’d wished he’d taken, Matty is starting to spiral. He can’t get out of his head.
That's why they are on the trip in the first place. No phones, no social media, no civilized society, nothing but making a record on some Texas compound in the middle of the state. He knows it's for his own good, leaving everything behind for a while. Savoring the final moments of his phone he types his passcode in with his thumb almost secretively, almost like he’s ashamed to care that the message sits there at all. He checks his messages one last time, maybe it's changed, and maybe he’ll have to courage to open it.
1 Unopened Message Look Matty I love you it’s just…
He sighs and clicks the power button, taking out his wired headphones to join the lively conversation taking place in the row in front of him.
“-Nah mate im telling you it'll be good, you lot are too accustomed to the city,” says Arthur driving the car, one elbow casually resting on the center console.
He's a producer friend of Jamie’s and has some connection to some property in the country that's “so fucking cool it's mental mate”. He works well with George and after a particularly harrowing cancellation, a weekend plan turned into a summer-long break from the public eye.
“Oh look who decided to join them convo, you done being dramatic?” George smirks turning at the shuffling of Matty putting his headphones in his too-full backpack.
“Fuck off,” Matty mutters not even caring to look up at the blonde.
“It's jokes mate, but god knows you use your mindset for this album well chart!” Ross laughs shifting to face Matty as well.
Giggles are let out amongst the grown men in the car. Matty is not amused in the slightest, a scowl finds its way upon his face. Matty looks up at the men and opens his mouth to rattle off some witty dig when Arthur interrupts.
“Everyone hold on this is where things get a little bumpy” He sharply turns onto a dirt road, and everyone is too busy holding on for their life to continue their tiff.
—----------
They pull up to the compound at dusk after excessively long on the nauseating dirt road. Matty wasn't quite sure what he was expecting, maybe a horror movie house, full of spiders and creaking floorboards but what he was met with was far nicer than anticipated.
The spacious ranch house is surrounded by fields, with a little creek rolling through the property cutting it in half length-wise.
A sprawling deck extends from the back of the house, full of outdoor furniture with a barbeque and a fireplace. Adorning the deck are delicate string lights, their glow illuminating the space warm and inviting, especially as the pink skies fade into pale powdery purples. If he hadn't given up his phone to Arthur a few minutes prior he’d have taken a picture to send to his mom.
It's as he’s surveying the property when he sees it, a small house just on the other side of the creek. He swears he can see a silhouette in the window, lights softly glowing through thin curtains when a hand lands on his back startling him from his discovery.
“Let's go in yeah?” Says Adam with a soft smile. He leads Matty inside one hand on the strap of his own backpack, the other still on Matty's back. Matty shrugs it off and walks beside him in silence breaking apart to claim his room for the future months.
After he gets slightly unpacked and changes out of his travel clothes, the group congregates in the living room to set up where they’ll be physically making the record.
“There’s honestly plenty to do just help yourselves to the land and the house whatever sparks your creative juices you know?” Arthur starts unpacking production equipment, making a makeshift studio while giving his spiel.
“Just don't fuck with the livestock Lou gets all pissy when you fuck with the livestock and I do not want to be yelled at because someone wanted to pet a fucking cow and spooked the whole herd again,” Arthur says sternly, eyes wide.
“Who the fuck is Lou?” Says George, visibly confused.
“Livestock attendant, the compound is technically a vacation house for some rick fucks so they needed somebody to watch the land and keep up the animals,” Arthur explains continuing his grappling with the tapestry. Ross reaches up to help him, pinning it in place immediately. “Thanks, mate.. well that person is Lou”
Matty has no interest in another guy joining their circle, another guy to mess up their dynamic, another guy to mistake as a friend. Adam senses his uncomfortable energy and shoots Ross a look, the bearded man shoots him one back, shrugging.
Matty ignores the worried stares and unspoken comforts and walks to his room without so much as a peep, feet padding along the cold concrete floors.
“We’re worried about him yeah?” says Adam still looking at where Matty stood only seconds ago, as if he left a dark cloud in his path.
“Yeah” Sighs George.
—--
Matty shoots up, sweaty, rigid, and breathless. His legs stick to the white sheets of the bed, crisp cotton turned damp and constricting. The sun is barely peeking over the horizon but the heat of the day has already started. The thick air is filling his lungs, Matty needs a smoke.
Not bothering to change out of the plaid pajama pants and lack of a shirt, he rifles through his backpack pockets searching for his cigarettes. After finding his saving grace in the deepest pocket, he rushes down the long halfway to the back porch frantically lighting his cigarette when he sees her.
She sits on an old wooden fence, all pouty lips, tangled hair, and long legs knocking around in an old pair of cowboy boots. She’s facing the other way toward the pasture, head turned over her shoulder to get a look at the shirtless stranger who looks far too out of place.
Matty rakes through her appearance, light wash cutoffs, and a white tank top you can see through if you squint. She's a gangly little thing really, with freckles upon her cheeks and brown hair bleached a dirty blonde from the sun. She seems unruly, with bruises on her legs, and hands dirtied from caring for the creatures, but she seems…free.
“I take it you’re my new summer neighbor” she breaks the silence, revealing a slight southern drawl, spinning around on the fence to face the man who more so resembles a flustered teenager in the current predicament.
“I’m Lou” she continues cocking her head to the side flicking her eyes to his tattoo-filled abdomen. A slight smirk playing on her pink lips.
It hits Matty that this is the Lou he was worried about. Lou is not a man, she's instead quite possibly the most beautiful girl he's ever seen. Matty feels the need to puff out his chest suddenly self-conscious of the vulnerability, and the shy nature he doesn't typically carry.
“Oh- uh- yeah I guess I am” he manages to choke out.
She grins. There’s a sparkle in her eye, a glint of curiosity. He's something shiny, something new, something to discover.
“Well alright stranger, If you go put on some real clothes I'll show you something cool, yeah?” She states as if he would immediately obey. Matty Healy is no “simp” he doesn't do whatever a chick wants him to do. He is a cold player who calls his own shots. But the way he treks back to his room to throw on a pair of jeans and an old band tee makes him seem quite the opposite.

Family Christmas
Tumblr media
Summary : You go over to Mattys childhood home for Christmas, and finally get to meet his family. And also mess around a bit in his old bedroom
Paring : Matty Healy x afab! reader
Warnings : Smut, alcohol mention?, meeting the family.
Notes: This is such an adorable idea! i hope i did you proud anon!
Tumblr media
"Matty, are you sure it'll be ok? I don't want to intrude on your family christmas" you say as matty packs both his and your suitcases in the trunk of his car. "Baby I'm positive, plus my mum is dying to meet you" he says, before slamming the trunk door shut. "Ok" you whisper, before slipping into the passenger seat. Matty quickly hops into the drivers seat and starts the car, before pulling out of the driveway.
You spend most of the car ride looking out the window, too much in your own head to talk to matty.
His hand being placed on your thigh is what snaps you out of your thoughts. "Y/n, baby it'll be ok I promise" matty says, trying his best to calm your nerves. "I know, but what if they don't like me?" you say, and turn to face him. "Baby they're going to love you, my mum couldn't stop telling me how excited she is for you to join us" Matty says, looking over at you quickly before focusing back on the road. "Ok, Sorry about all this, its just I've never met the family before so this is big '' you say, "I know baby, it'll be fun though I promise" he says, gently squeezing your thigh to comfort you.
After about an hour, you both arrived at his childhood home. "Wow this is beautiful" you say, as you admire the old victorian style home, "Isn't it? I always loved it when I was a kid, I'm excited to show you around!" he says, as he puts the car in park and turns it off. He turns to face you, the smile never leaving his face as he sees how excited you are to be there. "Ready to head inside?" he asks, "Ready as I'll ever be" you respond, before both of you get out of the car.
Matty grabbed both of your bags out of the trunk, while you carried the bag of presents, and the two of you walked up the gravel path to the front door. Matty carefully set the bags down and knocked on the door. You heard a voice shout "coming!" from inside the house, and a second later the door swung open to reveal his mom. "Hello My dears! Happy you made it here safe!" Denise said, before pulling her oldest son into a hug. Once she pulled away from Matty, her eyes met yours. "Ah you must be Y/N, wow matty she's even prettier in person!" she says, which causes you to blush. "It's a pleasure to meet you" you say, "You too dear! I'm so happy you were able to join us" Denise said, as she sent a warm smile your way, you could tell she wanted to hug you but couldn't since you had the bag of presents in your hand. "Now come inside before you freeze! I'll make some tea for you both while you settle in" she says, quickly ushering you both into the warm house.
" I'll show us to our room" Matty says, and you quickly follow him up the staircase. He opens the door to his childhood bedroom, and you smile as you take in the old decor. "Wow" you say, your eyes slowly scanning all the old rock poster he had hung up on the walls. "What?" he asks, "You were definitely a nerd for rock and roll weren't you healy" you tease, before placing the bag of present down on the floor. Matty looks over at you with a fake hurt expression, "Hey! Am not" he says, causing you to chuckle. "Are too" you say back, laughing at the childish exchange you guys are having.
Before you know it he's tackling you onto his bed, his hands going to your sides to tickle you. You giggle and squirm as he continues his tickle assault on you, "Ma-matty stop" you giggle, "Not until you apologize and say I'm the sexist man alive" he teases. You roll your eyes at him, "F-fine I'm sorry" you say as best as you can, while still being tickled. "Thank you baby but you're missing the last part" he says, you roll you eyes again and say "You're the sexist man alive", and with that he stops tickling you. "Glad you finally admitted it" he teases, still hovering over you on his bed, "You're so full of yourself Healy" you joke as you look up at your boyfriend. "Yeah but you love when you're full of m-" he says but you cut him off, "Matty!" you scold, your face going bright red at what he was about say. "What it's true" he says, before leaning down and kissing you. "Come on we should probably head downstairs before your mom thinks we're having sex" you joke, gently pushing him off of you and getting up from the bed. You reach you hand out for him to take, which he does, and the two of you make it back downstairs and to the kitchen where you see Denise preparing the tea.
"Oh Y/N, now that you don't have a bag in your hand I can finally give you a hug" she says, before wiping her hands on a towel and pulling you into a warm embrace. "I'm so glad you were able to join us" she whispers in your ear, which causes you to smile. "Thank you for inviting me" you say as you both pull away from the hug. "Of course! You're part of the family now Y/N, you're always welcome here" Denise says, before going back over to finish preparing the tea.
"See I told you she'd love you" Matty whispers in your ear, as he comes up behind you and wraps his arms around your waist. "But not as much as I love you of course" he says, before kissing your cheek, you smile and turn your head just enough so you could place a quick kiss on his lips. "I love you too" you whisper as you pull away from the kiss and smile.
After dinner, the four of you, the fourth being Lincoln, Denise's husband, who arrived a little before dinner, decided it would be a good idea to call it a night since tomorrow was going to be a busy day. "Good night My dears! Sleep well" Denise says as she gives both you and matty a kiss on the check and a hug goodnight. "Goodnight" you both say in response, before heading back to Mattys room. The two of quickly get changed into your Pajamas, before cuddling up in Mattys old bed and falling asleep.
The next day you were woken up by the familiar smell of bacon, you were about to elbow matty awake, but realized he wasn't beside you anymore. You quickly got out of bed and got dressed, before making your way down the stairs and into the kitchen.
"Good morning my love" matty says in a sing songy voice, as he walks up to you and kisses your cheek. "Goodmorning baby" you whisper, "I hope you're hungry dear because we have a full breakfast" Denise says from behind Matty. "I'm starving and everything looks and smells delicious" you say as you look at the array of breakfast foods on the kitchen counter.
After breakfast, you and matty spent the rest of the afternoon helping Denise cook and decorate for dinner tonight. "You know you're my favoirte of all of mattys girlfriends" Denise says as you both scoop out cookie dough onto sheet pans. You blush at her compliments "You're too sweet" you say, "I mean it, I've never seen him this happy before" she says, before placing her completed cookie sheet, as well as yours, into the oven. "I've never been this happy before" you say as a smile forms on your face, "He's my bestfriend and my boyfriend, what more could I ask for? I mean I never knew love like this could exist till I met him" you finish. "Aww young love" Denise coos as she pulls you into a quick hug, "I'll clean up here if you wanna go find Matty" she says as she picks up the dishes, "No, let me help, after all I did make half of this mess" you joke, but Denise shakes her head "I insist dear go find Matthew" she chuckles as she nudges you out of the kitchen.
You make you way up the stairs, knowing you'll probably find matty in his room. And sure enough as soon as you get to the top step you hear the soft strumming of his guitar coming from his childhood bedroom. You slowly make your way to his room and carefully open the door. "Beautiful as always" you say as you lean against the door frame. Matty stops playing, and turns to face you, "Why thank you my love" he says and places his guitar down, before walking up to you. "Did you have fun baking cookies with my mum?" he asks, his hands finding their way to your hips and pulling you closer. "Yeah it was alot of fun" you say, and reach up to brush a few stray curls from his forehead. "I'm excited to meet your brother and the rest of your family tonight" you say, "Me too, it's going to be fun but you let me know if they ever get too overwhelming ok?" he says, you nod your head before he places a soft kiss to your forehead.
It was now late in the evening, the events of the night were already underway. Most of mattys immediate and extended family was stuffed inside the house, all ready to celebrate the holiday together. For you however, it was hard to focus on what was going on at the party, because you couldn't stop staring at your boyfriend, who looked incredibly stunning.
You watched from afar as he effortlessly conversed with one of his cousins. You felt your heart speed up as he made eye contact with you, quickly sending a wink in your direction, before going back to the conversation. You don't know what had come over you that evening, maybe it was the wine you had been drinking or maybe it was just matty, but every bone in your body wanted him, no needed him.
You decided to slip away from the living room and make your way up to his bedroom, hoping that maybe not seeing him would help you cool down just enough so you could return back to the party. But as you laid down on his bed, staring up at the ceiling which was littered with tiny glow and the dark stars, you couldn't help but imagine all the things you wanted him to do to you in that moment.
Just as you were about to slip your hand under the waist band of you skirt, you heard the door open. You quickly pulled your hand away and sat up to see who was there, "Matty?" you say, recognizing the familiar silhouette. "Hey baby" he says, the words roll of his tongue effortlessly, making the urge to squeeze your thighs together for relief even stronger. "Wh-what are you doing up here?" you ask as you see him gently close and lock the door behind him before walking over to his bed. "Well I went to go see if you were ok, I saw you slip away upstairs and came to check on you. Now i see you were ok, just horny" he teases. You blush furiously as you realize you have been caught "How can I not when you look like that" you say, motioning towards him. He chuckles lowly, before kicking off his shoes and hovering over you on the bed. "I do look pretty hot don't i?" he says, gently pushing you back down on the bed. You roll your eyes and giggle "Way to ruin the moment Healy" you tease. He smirks at you and slowly runs his hand up your thigh, stopping it right over your soaked panties. "Mm your body says otherwise baby" he whispers and slowly applies pressure to your clothed core, causing you to moan in pleasure.
"Shh baby don't want anyone to hear how good I make you feel" he says, before hooking his fingers in the elastic of your underwear and slowly pulling them down your legs. You gasp as the cold air hits your naked core, "Please matty" you whisper, desperate for his touch. "What do you want baby?" he whispers, slowly placing hot open mouth kisses to your neck. "You" you whimper as you feel his hand make its way back up to your core. He chuckles lowly "you want my cock darling? Is that it" he teases, as his finger slowly rubs circles on your clit. You have to bite your lip to hold back your moans. "What me to fuck you like the slut you are baby? My familys down stairs and you're up here just begging to be fucked" he taunts. "Please matty, I need you" you beg, your hands reach out and unbuckle his belt. He watches as you slowly unzip his black dress pants, and groans when he feels you palm him over his boxers. "You got a condom?" you ask, desperate to have more than his fingers inside of you. He quickly removes his fingers from you and gets off the bed in search for a condom.
After finding one in his old sock drawer he comes back to you. He slowly pulls his boxers down just enough to reveal himself to you. You watch closely as he gently rolls the condom on himself and goes back to hovering over you. "Remember be quiet baby" he whispers, before lining himself up with your entrance and slowly pushing in. He captures your lips in his, swallowing your moans as he quickly sinks deeper inside of you. He gives you a minute to adjust before gently rocking his hips back and forth. Your fingers find their way to his curls and quickly tug on them as you hold back your moans.
"You take me so well baby" he whispers in your ear, as he speeds up his thrusts. "Matty" you moan, not being able to hold it back as you feel him hit a deeper spot inside of you. One of his hands makes its way up to your neck and applies a bit of pressure "Shh or they're hear baby" he scolds. The  pressure on your neck and the way his cock is continuously hitting the sweet spot inside of you begins to become to much, causing you to feel the familiar tenison build in your stomach.
Matty catches you by surprise, when he flips you guys over, his back now on the bed and you straddling his lap. After a second to adjust to the new position, you quickly rock your hips back and forth, having to hold onto his chest for support as the pleasure begins to become to much.
All it takes to make you finish is matty to thrusting up into you every time you rock your hips forward. You collapse onto his chest as your orgasm washes over you. You feel him thrust into you a few times more before he stalls inside of you. You look up at him and send him a dopey grin "I love you" you whisper, before you lean up and place a kiss on his lips. "I love you too" he says, before gently helping you off of him. He places you down on the bed, before getting up and disposing of the condom.
"We should probably head back down before people come to look for us" you say, carefully getting off the bed and going to retrieve your underwear. "If they ask us where we went i'll just say how needy you were for my co-" but you elbow him before he can finish. "If you say that I'll punch you" you joke, as you fix the collar of his shirt, so it doesn't look like you just had sex. "Aw come on you love me" he teases, "True, but would rather not have your family know about our sex lives" you joke, as you go to fix your hair and outfit in the mirror. "Come on lets head downstairs" you say, as you grab his hand and lead both of you out the door and back down to the party . Everyone had been so drunk or distracted that they didn't even notice that you both had been gone for 15 minutes, and that there was a hickey forming on your neck.

I’ve always loved writing.
When I was sixteen, I entered my work into a local writing contest and, while I didn’t win, the praise I received ignited a high I couldn’t come down from. When I met Matty for the first time, his passion for music and lyricism kept that high going. We’d sit on the floor of my childhood bedroom and chat for hours, discussing different verses for his unreleased songs and critiquing choruses on songs that had just been released at the time.
That was years ago. Sixteen felt like a dream state.
Now, we’re both older and busier, and my new apartment has grown quieter as his workload picks up and mine keeps steady. He was preparing to release his second studio album with his band, while I continued with photography full-time and worked as a journalist part-time.
It was sad not to have him around. In some weird, nauseating way, I could feel his presence in my apartment even while he was gone. It was like he left a part of himself behind, haunting me as I slept and following me around as I worked. I couldn’t stand it. I should be happy his presence lingers like it does, but instead of showing some fondness for his ghost, I found myself despising it.
I couldn’t blame him for our distance, per se. After all, we both had our commitments. However, I doubted that I haunted him the way he haunted me.
Once finishing the final edits for a client’s wedding photos, I found myself holding onto my phone and unlocking it, opening my messages, and searching for Matty’s contact. He was pinned at the top, sandwiched between my sister and my best friend Vivian. I thinly smiled at the screen and clicked on his contact photo.
“Hey, what’s up?” I texted, hovering my thumb over the arrow.
I debated if this was a good idea. I fought with myself, battling back and forth if he’d even reply. Before I could back out of sending it, my thumb accidentally pressed against the screen, delivering the message to Matty. I cursed, angrily turning off my phone and throwing it towards the end of my bed. My hands covered my face, a wave of first-hand embarrassment coursing through my veins and raising my body temperature.
My heart began to pound, rattling against my ribs as I awaited his response.
I waited there for a few minutes, my heartbeat slowing as I realized he might be busy, or that maybe he read it and didn’t feel up to sending a message back. But, right as my anxiety dipped and I let my guard down, my phone dinged and buzzed at the edge of my bed, lighting up against my covers.
I sighed, reaching over and picking it up.
“Here with the band, reviewing material for the album. Otherwise, not much. You?”
It was surprising to hear he wasn’t busy. With a new album on the cusp of its debut, I would be swamped. I then realized the difference between Matty and me: he was nonchalant, almost too calm about the workload he threw himself into. I, on the other hand, didn’t know what calm meant, carrying a sense of workload anxiety along with me everywhere I went.
“Really? That’s good,” I said. “Excited to hear the album when it releases.”
I was excited for him. I knew his passion for this project meant seeing him less, and while that made me upset, it did not waver the excitement and pride I felt.
I’d always be his biggest fan.
Eventually, as I watched my phone screen for a reply, the text bubble popped up.
“Why wait? The guys and I are chilling at George’s place and listening through what we have so far if you want to come along. We have wine. I know you like wine.”
I read his text over and over, wondering if this was real.
He asked me to join them.
I typed out a reply with wide eyes, throwing my legs over the side of my bed. “I would like to. For the wine, though,” I teased.
“Whatever,” he responded. “Hurry over, then.”
I liked his message and turned off my phone, placing my feet on the carpeted floor of my bedroom. I walked towards my closet. It wasn’t cold enough for anything too heavy, so I slipped into a pair of jean shorts and a band tee, a white long-sleeved turtleneck layered underneath.
I smiled in the mirror.
Maybe, in some wavering universe, the ghost of Matty that lingered around my apartment heard my thoughts and reported back to him. Perhaps he had my contact opened on his phone, too. I thought about all the possibilities as I brushed through my hair, deciding not to tie it back with a hair tie. It lingered against my face, tickling my cheeks as I grabbed my keys off my nightstand, pocketed my phone, and slipped sneakers onto my feet.
The drive to George’s place was solemn. I didn’t turn the radio on. I rolled down all the windows, feeling the wind seep through and kiss the bare skin of my arms. Once I parked my car along the street, I grabbed my journal from my glove compartment, thinking it’d be a good opportunity to get a bit of writing done.
There was no need to knock on the door, it was propped open with a sneaker.
I rolled my eyes, lingering in the doorway before walking in.
Adam, who sat the closest to the doorway, was the first to see me arrive. He smiled wide and gave me a small wave. “Hey, look who made it!”
I waved back, tucking my journal under my arm. “Hi, everyone.”
“Wine’s sitting on the counter,” George replied. “Glad to have ya.”
I gave him a thumbs up, stepping through the doorway and looking around. My heart almost stopped when I saw Matty, whose eyes were already lingering on my frame. He stood up from his seat and met me in the middle of the room, hesitating for a moment before giving me a small hug. His lips parted, and I watched as his arms fell to his side as he released me. “For a second, I assumed you might not show.”
“Really?” I questioned him. “Were you nervous, or…”
He shook his head, shoving his hands into his pocket. “No, no. Just the distance, that’s all. I’ve been shit at making plans with you since our workload increased.”
“It’s fine,” I said. I was willing to brush it off.
Matty wasn’t, though. He shook his head again. “Would you stop that?”
“What?” I laughed. “It’s fine.”
He rolled his eyes. “Find a spot, we’re gonna run through the tracklist.”
“Don’t be a stranger, either,” George reiterated. “Help yourself to whatever.”
I nodded. “Heard,” I said.
I grabbed a glass from George’s cabinet, filled it with wine, and found a seat. I sat next to Matty, directly across from Ross and Adam. Once settled, I set my journal on the table next to me.
I’ve known these guys for years but sometimes still found myself nervous around them. It was weird. I knew we were all the same: we were artists, after all, but I couldn’t help but feel a tad out of place.
George queued up the tracklist for their album and I settled into my seat, sipping from my glass. The red from the wine stained the corners of my lips. As the album played through, Adam sat up straight and focused his eyes on me. “So, how have you been? Are you still in the photography business?”
“Mhm,” I nodded. “I love it. It’s so freeing.”
“I’m glad,” he replied.
Ross perked up. “I saw you posted a few pictures not too long ago.”
“I try now and then,” I sat my glass down. “Keeps my Instagram feed organized.”
“Have you been writing?” Matty chimes in.
I shake my head. “Haven’t been recently, no.”
He tilted his head in response, deciding against replying.
His silence stung.
Adam tried to add something else to the conversation but was silenced by George, who’s perched over his laptop. Matty dryly chuckled, the rough draft of their album playing through the living room of George’s apartment.
It was beautiful. It reminded me of their self-titled album, but at the same time, it was completely different. It carried a whole new aesthetic. I hummed along, trying to learn the lyrics as the songs played out. Matty snuck a few glances. I could feel his eyes on me, even if I hadn’t been looking in his direction. For a moment, there was peace. No one spoke. We watched each other with a shared eagerness, the music softly surrounding us.
It felt nostalgic.
I exhaled, pulling my legs underneath my weight.
When the final track came on, there was a heaviness that entered with it. I could feel it in the room, I could feel it in the air surrounding us. I could feel it next to me on the couch, burying itself into Matty and taking place inside his body. He adjusted, clearing his throat and prying himself from his seat. He grabbed a pack of cigarettes from his jacket pocket, silently excusing himself.
I looked around, watching as he stepped onto the balcony connected to George’s place. I turned to Adam, who shrugged with a slight frown.
“Is he okay?” I asked. It was meant to be louder but came out as a whisper. Like something got stuck in my throat.
Ross parted his lips. “The entirety of this album is emotionally charged. Sometimes when we replay it and search for things we need to edit, he steps out for a breather.”
George nodded, confirming Ross’ words.
I pulled my legs into myself. “Yeah, I could feel the shift in tone as the tracks played out. I love it, though. Beautiful work, you guys.”
Adam mouthed a small “thank you,” while George nodded and Ross smiled. The tracklist finished and the three grouped around George’s computer, conversing over any final edits they should make. I released my legs from my grasp, allowing them to stretch as I stood up. I turned towards the balcony doors, stepping over and peering out.
Matty’s smoking silently in the corner.
I watch as he adjusts. He’s hunched over the balcony and observing the passing cars.
Sliding open the door just a tad, I slipped through quietly and stood there, waiting to see if he’d felt my presence or heard me enter. He does, but refuses to turn his head or move from his position. Ash falls from his cigarette. The wind picks up slightly, blowing through his curls and brushing past my figure.
“It’s quiet out here,” I spoke up.
Other than the cars, the neighborhood was silent. It felt as if we were the only ones awake.
Matty nodded, moving the cigarette from his lips and flicking the butt towards the sidewalk below. “Yeah,” he whispered. “Dead silent, but peaceful.”
I scratched my head. It had been a while since we’d shared such an intimate moment, and I was almost unsure how to help, or if he even wanted to talk.
“I liked the album,” I finally spat out. “Gorgeous work.”
“Yeah?” He questioned, sitting up and looking towards me. “I’m glad.”
I gave him a half-smile, stepping closer and leaning against the wall. “It might be some of the best art you’ve ever made. The writing is so captivating, I felt like I was living vicariously through you.”
He nodded but changed the subject, catching me off guard.
“You haven’t been writing?” He asked.
I crossed my arms in front of my chest, watching him as he stood across from me. “I mean, I have been writing. I’m a part-time journalist, so I spend chunks of my time writing. It just hasn’t been personal or creative recently, I guess.”
“Why?” He asked again. “Wasn’t that your thing? Our thing?”
“Yeah,” I spoke up. “That hasn’t changed, Matty.”
That was partly a lie. It had changed. It felt weird trying to be creative without my creative partner. Even if I brought my journal tonight, it sat vacant in George’s living room. Things were constantly changing, and I couldn’t handle that change.
Matty’s ghost haunted me frequently, desperately trying to fill in for his absence. I knew it wasn’t purposeful. I knew we were adults now and that our paths diverged, but it hurt coming to that conclusion. It would always hurt, I was sure of it.
“You don’t have to lie,” he said. “Please don’t lie.”
“What?” I said a little louder. “I’m not a liar.”
“You can say you’re upset with me, I can take it,” he muttered.
“I’m not upset with you,” I restated.
“Yes, you are!” He wants to shout, I can tell. He doesn’t though. He tries to remain composed, praying that his friends won’t hear him spatting back and forth with me.
I rolled my eyes in response. “Whatever, Matty.”
“Why haven’t you been writing?” He straightened his posture, focusing on me.
I didn’t want to say anything.
I stayed silent.
He looked at me with some form of anguish, trying desperately to pry the answer out of me.
He parted his lips. “Well?”
I closed my eyes and exhaled, releasing a shaky breath. My words are almost muffled, coated in a certain silence. “It feels weird.”
Confused, he shifted his weight from one leg to the other.
I watched as his eyebrow furrowed. “What do you mean?”
“It feels weird to try and force something onto paper. God, it feels so strange creating without you,” I spat out.
He glared, listening to me speak and trying to find something to reply with.
“I know it’s not our fault,” I continued. “I know we get busy, but it hurts. I can’t collaborate with you as often as we used to, and it feels so absent without your presence in my apartment.”
Matty frowns slightly, his expression shifting almost immediately. He sighed, shoving his hands into the front pockets of his jeans. “Nothing’s changed, though. You know that, right?”
“Honestly?” I said. “I don’t. I mean, they have. You can’t say they haven’t.”
“How?” He questioned me. “Just because of a little absence?”
“It’s not just the absence, Matty!” My voice raised in volume. I can hear Adam, George, and Ross in the other room. They’re shifting their focus towards the balcony.
My arms uncrossed from in front of my chest, falling to my sides as I exhaled. “You haunt me,” I admitted. “Your ghost is tethered to me. It haunts me, and I can’t take it anymore.”
Matty remained confused, silent as he pieced together what I said. His silence spoke numbers. It was clear now that I was right. I didn’t haunt him. He didn’t spend every waking hour overthinking our friendship: if you could even call it a friendship. I didn’t know what we were to each other, anymore. Deep down, maybe I’d wished for more.
His hands covered his face, dragging downwards as he thought over everything. “I’m sorry,” he had finally said. “I’m sorry for being such a shitty friend. I’m sorry for haunting you.”
I felt like an idiot.
“Don’t apologize,” I replied. “It’s fine.”
“I wish you would stop saying that,” he scoffed. “It’s not fucking fine.”
“One day it will be,” I said as I backed away from the wall. I looked towards the door leading back inside, contemplating making my exit.
Matty watched as I did so. “Don’t leave, not like this.”
I lied again, muttering as I took small, calculated steps toward the balcony door. “It’s late. Can I text you tomorrow?” Once I left George’s apartment, there was no way I’d text Matty about this. I wanted nothing more than to forget this conversation existed, but I knew that’d never happen. The least I could do was shove it away and pretend.
Matty stood motionless. “Please,” he pleaded.
My eyes were glossy as he watched over me, my body now halfway through the balcony door. With a broken voice, I stepped all the way through. “I’m sorry, I have to go.”
I ran out of George’s apartment as quickly as I could, glancing behind me as I approached my car. Matty didn’t chase after me. I didn’t expect him to. I unlocked my car doors, slipped into my front seat, and sat there in deafening silence. I lingered there before turning the key in the ignition and stepping on the gas, tears threatening to fall on my way back home.
I was a liar. I was selfish. I had felt such obscure feelings, an idiot for even thinking they’d be reciprocated.
Matty’s ghost reminded me of such, his presence heavy in the passenger seat of my car.

you bring me home - matty healy
part four
pairing- matty x f!oc
wc- 3.4K
summary- following her fiancé suddenly calling off their engagement caroline daniel finds herself moving in with her brother and his best friend who she had a huge crush on as a teenager just in time for a worldwide lockdown.
Tumblr media
Something had shifted within Caroline following the night she spent connecting with Matty. A change which wasn't unfamiliar to her, in fact it was all too memorable. It was like finally coming home, like remembering what warmth feels like after a seemingly permanent coldness. And Caroline was absolutely petrified by the sudden resurgence of emotions she had buried a long time ago.
He had just taken pity on her, Caroline reiterated to herself. Like any decent human being he had comforted her when she was evidently distraught. Matty had only been acting out of obligation because they were somewhat friends and more importantly she was his best friend's little sister. His words didn't have any deeper meaning, he was just an inherently good soul.
If she let herself entertain her delusions she would be no better than her ex she mused. Even if he had never really been committed to her, she had given her everything to that relationship and she couldn't possibly move on that quickly. But Matty was frustratingly conscientious and always checking in on her so it was impossible to avoid him, despite knowing she had to if she wanted to prevent her little resurfaced crush from developing any further.
So that's what prompted Caroline to come back to the hospital to work on the unit after leaving to pursue research the year prior. Coming back to work on the front lines in the middle of a global pandemic was stressful but she found it gave her mind the necessary rest from her own problems – it was much easier to face and solve other people's than her own. And it gave her a sense of purpose in a time where she truly felt lost. She could be a friendly face, a comforting presence for her patients, she knew how to do that. What she wasn't so sure of these days was who she really was underneath all of that. The studio is alive when Caroline returns every evening, a stark contrast to how things were at the start. It's buzzing with energy and she somehow walks in to the boys doing something stupid every time that makes her genuinely question their sanity before falling into side splitting laughter with them over their antics. It's the good kind of laughter Caroline notes, the kind that you can still feel in the slight aches of your ribs hours later - serving a very needed reminder that it was real.
She can handle her highly inappropriate yet persisting feelings towards Matty in small doses. Even though those small doses are concentrated ones where he's in constantly in her orbit. Although if she's being completely transparent it would be more accurate to say she's in his orbit. For Matty is the sun. Radiant and blinding. Luring people in with his warmth and for the most part unknowingly the centre of everything. At least for Caroline because in the heart of her world Matty was the brightest star, an ineffable illumination of everything good in the world even if he purposefully extinguished it to the prying, outside eye. Every interaction with him was akin to stepping into the gentle embrace of dawn after a night filled with pitch black, stormy skies.
He had seriously committed to his unspoken promises of reviving Caroline's genuine smile and expelling the lingering misery she still experienced. His laughter was everywhere all of the time – occupying every neuron, every auditory pathway until it eventually overwhelmed her auditory cortex with its captivating and melodic quality. It was as if his mirth had the ability to dispel the shadows, coaxing a smile from the corners of her lips even in the gloomiest of moments. Matty had that kind of power over people. The power to kindle a spark within them that soon spread like uncontrollable wildfire. Then when you pair that with a long lived crush still breathing...well it only amplified that effect of his.
But just as the sun graces the world with its light it also casts shadows. And in the gentle radiance of his presence, there existed the shadow of her unspoken, resurfacing feelings. A dichotomy of warmth and yearning, a constant tug of war between being content with their shared moments in private and longing for something more. It was a paradox she navigated, for she knew that while he was the sun that illuminated her world, he was also a star she could only admire from afar.
As Caroline returned to her work at the hospital, an unexpected transformation seemed to weave its way into the fabric of her relationship with Matty. The dynamics between them shifted, evolving into a state of familiarity and comfort that bordered on domesticity. It was as if the unspoken connection they shared had blossomed into a new phase, one where their interactions were marked by a sense of intimacy that transcended the already blurry bounds of their friendship. The transition was subtle, like the gradual turning of seasons, but it was unmistakably present.
The first time Matty made her coffee, Caroline was half-asleep and unsuspecting. As she shuffled into the kitchen, eyes half-lidded, she was met with the sight that would etch itself into her memory. There stood Matty, a vision in tousled hair and sleep-drawn features. His right hand held her travel mug, his fingers wrapped around the vessel with a certain tenderness that belied his dishevelled appearance.
The corners of his lips curved upward into a sleepy grin as his gaze met hers. "Mornin'," he greeted, the warmth in his voice a stark contrast to the chill present due to the early hour. He extended the mug toward her, a silent offering that carried more weight than words ever could. "Thought you'd need this."
The weight of his gesture, of the effort he had taken to ensure her morning started with comfort, settled over her like a cosy blanket. She accepted the mug with a quiet gratitude, her fingers brushing against his briefly in the exchange. The world outside may have been chaotic, but in this small moment, it was as if time stood still.
Caroline cradled the mug in her grasp as she studied Matty's features in all their morning glory. He was somehow still beautiful despite it being evident that he hadn't yet slept a wink – clearly having spent all night abuzz working on something for the album. Bringing the brew to her lips she took a sip of the hot liquid and was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't as though she doubted Matty's ability to make a good cup of coffee but considering he typically made his a lot sweeter than she would normally take hers, Caroline was impressed that he noticed those little details.
"Good stuff, huh?"
Caroline smiled in return, a soft warmth settling in her chest. "Yeah, really good. Thanks."
His smile widened, a glimmer of mischief in his eyes. "I'm wasted making music."
She chuckled, shaking her head. "Oh definitely, I'm sure Café Nero would be dying to have you back if you ever get bored of being my personal barista and world famous musician."
"Cheeky," he goads "was going to make you another tomorrow morning but I think I'll just sleep in instead."
Caroline held back a laugh "I won't force you but you'd be earning a lot of points in my books Matthew."
His expression softened "well then...I'll be waiting, same time tomorrow."
Mornings follow suit with a sense of anticipation, as Caroline would find herself waking up to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the studio. She would step into the kitchen to find Matty, already awake, a warm smile playing on his lips as he handed her a cup of her favourite brew. Initially she had thanked him for the coffee but persuaded him not to lose sleep over her but she hadn't been very successful as the following mornings Matty greeted her with her travel mug full, his own mug of tea and the knowledge that he usually went right back to bed once she left for work everyday. Slowly and not without complaints he adopted her sleep schedule – or at least the early morning aspect. When Caroline asked him why he was making such an effort his answer rendered her speechless. It was the only time of day during the week which he got to spend with only her. That he'd grown fond of their midnight ramblings but these days they were so inseparable with George and Louis that the mornings were regretfully their only time alone.
The boys, in their own way, embraced this shift. Evenings greeted Caroline with the comforting scent of food fresh out of the oven. It was nothing spectacular but they managed to not burn anything and it was the sentiment that touched Caroline. She would have been happy to cook for them all in the evenings regardless of her just arriving home from work but that suggestion had hardly left her lips before it was meant with protests. It was rather sweet how they all insisted that Caroline deserved a rest after the long days on her feet.
When she'd returned to dinner at the studio the first time she had been shocked to say the least because none of the boys were even close to amateur chefs. In fact her first reaction had been to raise a brow in mock scepticism and quip "You lot? Cook dinner? Are you trying to give me food poisoning?"
To which Matty retaliated, eyes twinkling with amusement. "Oh, come on! I can cook, you know."
With a well-practiced sense of theatricality, Caroline countered, "Right, and I'm the Queen of England."
The friendly sparring continued, each word exchanged a playful volley.
"Literally the only times I've ever seen you cook for yourself the smoke alarm thought we were under attack," she recalled, a grin playing on her lips.
Matty met her accusation with a smirking defence. "I was just testing the fire safety measures. A responsible citizen, that's me."
And then came George's orchestrated declaration, wrapped in an exaggerated façade of admiration as he tried not to cackle. "Ah, of course! You, responsible. Truly the pinnacle role model Mattthew."
So when Caroline came back to dinner made every evening like her life was an episode of some bizarre gender swapped fifties fever dream she accepted it happily so as to not set the boys off on a rant about how they couldn't possibly make Caroline, the resident genius and hardworking radiation therapist cook her own meals and continue to work once she came home. Even when she pointed out that they were literally also working all day they quickly brushed that argument under the rug, informing her that adding the finishing touches to an album was nowhere near comparable with saving lives and treating cancer patients daily.
The studio had become a haven, not just for the boy's creative endeavours but for the shared moments of respite they found in each other's company. Matty, in particular, seemed to take on a new role as a constant presence in her life. During her work hours, she would receive unexpected FaceTime calls, snippets of songs from their upcoming album playing softly in the background as Matty's voice offered glimpses into their world of music and inspiration. Sometimes all of them would be there on a call with her when she eventually got her lunch just to keep her company because Caroline had mentioned in passing how unsettling she found the otherwise empty and sterile canteen.
Caroline cherished these stolen moments, the sense of connection deepening with each passing day. It was as if Matty was inviting her into a space that was uniquely theirs, a realm where the boundaries of friendship blurred into something more profound. The snippets of songs he shared felt like secrets whispered in her ear, a testament to the trust he placed in her. In the evenings, the studio transformed into a realm of games and laughter. Game nights became a ritual, although putting four highly competitive people against each other often ended in disaster and strings of light hearted but intense insults.
The evening sun cast a warm, golden hue across the studio as Caroline stepped through the door, shedding the weight of a long day at work. The scent of familiarity enveloped her as she kicked off her shoes and set her bag down. The studio seemed to exhale a sigh of relief as she returned, as if it had been waiting for her presence to fill its spaces once more.
Caroline's tired gaze fell upon the inviting sight before her: the cosy living area adorned with soft cushions and warm throws, the gentle crackling of a fire in the fireplace, and, most importantly, the figure of Matty, seated on the couch with a book in hand.
She offered him a weary smile, her shoulders relaxing as the strains of the day began to dissipate. Matty looked up from his book, his eyes lighting up as they met hers. "Long day at work?" he asked, closing the book and setting it aside.
Caroline let out a soft chuckle, the tension in her features easing as she moved toward the couch. "You have no idea," she admitted, sinking into the plush cushions beside him. The warmth emanating from the fireplace and his proximity seemed to chase away the remnants of stress that had clung to her throughout the day.
Matty reached for a nearby throw blanket, unfolding it and draping it over both of them. It was a small gesture, but one that spoke volumes about his attentiveness. "Well, you're home now," he said softly, tucking the blanket around them both. "And I've got the perfect remedy for a long day."
Her curiosity piqued, Caroline turned to him, a playful glint in her eyes. "Oh, do tell. Is it a secret Healy remedy?"
Matty's grin was infectious as he leaned in conspiratorially. "It's simple, really," he began, his voice low as if sharing a well-kept secret. "I might have done a tesco delivery with a stash of your favourite snacks earlier and then you have good company."
Caroline chuckled, the exhaustion of the day giving way to a sense of contentment. "And I suppose you're the 'good company' part?"
Matty's feigned offense was accompanied by an exaggerated gasp. "Well, if you must ask, I suppose I can reluctantly fill that role," he replied, a twinkle of amusement in his eyes.
Once again Matty had surprised Caroline with a sweet gesture and it really wasn't making trying to suppress her feelings for him simple. Luckily for her Louis shortly joined them after he got off the phone with his girlfriend and George came back minutes later. Caroline was grateful for them being there because she didn't trust herself to be alone with Matty at the moment - even if her mind was well aware of the fact that starting anything with him was a bad idea, her heart was screaming at her, begging her to throw logic and reason out the window.
The four of them curled up in a messy pile of blankets on the couch and Matty turned on some random movie that Caroline had never seen before but didn't care about enough to know the name of.  As much as she tried to focus on the screen Caroline found her gaze kept drifting to her right where Matty was curled up alarmingly close to her.
Their legs were thrown all over the place, even on top of each other. Matty's right leg was drooped across George as he also snuggled into the left side of his torso. Louis was on the other side of Caroline and he had the most space by far and also the most pillows. Initially Matty had been leaning over Caroline in an attempt to snatch one of them from his brother's grasp but Louis hadn't let any of them go. Merely sending Caroline a knowing look as Matty then resorted to using Caroline's shoulder as a headrest. Feeling his warm breath on her skin sent Caroline's brain into overdrive as it struggled to function. His presence and the lack of space between them was overwhelming, goosebumps forming on her skin in anticipation.
Caroline couldn't keep her eyes off of Matty but it seemed to be reciprocated. Occasionally she'd force herself to look at the screen but his eyes always drifted back to the man currently resting his head on her shoulder. He was truly captivating, even more up close when you could see all the intricacies and tiny details like the small freckles from the sun or the soft pink flush that spread across his cheeks whenever they locked gaze. And Matty's close study of her features, as if he was trying to commit her to memory had Caroline losing her mind. There was a tenderness to his expression - as if he was observing a beautiful piece of art and not a jaded shell of a woman whose eyebags grew and darkened by the day with a practically permanent indent across the bridge of her nose from the pressure of her protective mask digging into it all day at work.
When the movie ended George let out a soft yawn and rubbed his bleary eyes "I think I'm going to head up to bed, see you lot in the morning." They said goodnight to him and Caroline didn't fail to point out that he wouldn't see her because she'd be long gone. Then despite looking awake as ever Louis rose from the sofa and announced that he was off as well. Sending a cheeky wink in Caroline's direction when Matty wasn't paying attention on his way out. He knew exactly what he was doing when up and left claiming to need to sleep and now Caroline was alone. Alone, with Matty . Alone with someone who she had spent such a large portion of her life in love with.
"You're comfy," Matty said quietly, almost like he was too scared to say it any louder.
Caroline's chest grew heavier at that. Suddenly everything was weighing her down and she was terrified. It felt like her heart was slamming against her chest so rapidly that it would burst through her sternum with ease.
But it was all silence after that until Matty broke it. "Caro," he began, his voice a conspiratorial whisper as they lounged in the living area of the studio, "I've been thinking."
Caroline's eyebrows quirked in curiosity, her gaze meeting his with a mixture of intrigue and amusement. "That's rare."
Matty's grin widened, his enthusiasm contagious. "How about we do something... a bit out of the ordinary?"
A bemused smile tugged at the corners of Caroline's lips. "And what exactly do you have in mind?"
Matty's eyes twinkled as he leaned in closer, his voice taking on a dramatic flair. "A fort," he declared, his tone hushed as if revealing a secret of the utmost importance. "We should build a fort."
Caroline's laughter danced in the air, a melodic sound that filled the room. "A fort? Are we twelve years old again?" Too many times in her childhood had she found Matty and George inside a fort he had built in George's room when they were meant to be asleep and Caroline used to join them on the promise that she wouldn't tell their parents.
Matty's expression remained earnest, his enthusiasm unwavering. "Why not? I haven't made one in forever."
Eventually giving in to his eager but pleading smile she found herself gathering an assortment of blankets and cushions, their laughter mingling with the rustling of fabric.
In the heart of the living area their fort began to take shape. They draped blankets over chairs, positioned cushions just right. With each layer added, the sense of nostalgia deepened, harkening back to a simpler time when building forts was an art form in itself. Their fingers brushed against soft fabrics, occasionally lingering too long or too close to each other.
Matty gestured with a flourish toward their handiwork, a playful glint in his eyes. "We did good, should be a professional."
Caroline laughed, her heart lighter than it had been in days. "It's... surprisingly impressive, I must admit."
Matty patted a cushion invitingly, his voice a whisper that held a touch of mischief. "Well, come on then. The fort awaits its inhabitants."
How had she ever believed she could get over him? Had she ever really wanted to get over him? Either way - she was well and truly fucked now because she was fully enraptured in the whirlpool that was Matty again and faced with a choice, sink or swim?

A coffee shop meeting…
Tumblr media
Summary: Fate steps in when a teacher in her not-even-quarter-life crisis meets Matty Healy.
A/N: There's a very strong possibility that I'll never post any other writing on here again, but I hope this brings a smile to someone else's face. This was a daydream born of my love both for the 1975 (Matty in particular tbh) and for the found family trope. Hope you enjoy it!
“You don’t happen to have a light, do you?”
“No, I don’t. Maybe it’s a sign you shouldn’t smoke it.”
“I’ve done a lot worse, believe me.”
“Oh, I know. Doesn’t make that nicotine any better for you though.”
Eleanor looked across at her companion, eyebrows raised in challenge, waiting to see if he had a comeback. The café, which had been heaving when she arrived a couple of hours ago, now had only two customers remaining. In their typical British fashion, they hadn’t spoken until now, despite being alone at their adjacent tables, so Eleanor was surprised to hear him finally breaking the ice over the rattling of coffee cups being tidied away. She watched as he put the cigarette back into the packet, a smirk overtaking his features.
“So you do recognise me then.”
Crap. Of course that’s what he took from that. Matty Healy - 1, Eleanor - 0.
“Yes, I recognised you, Matty,” Eleanor replied with a sigh. She couldn’t believe she’d lost that easily.
“Why didn’t you say anything? You were the only one in here that could see my face.”
“I was working,” she paused. “Or at least trying to. I don’t usually focus well in busy places, too many more interesting things to study.”
“Why are you here then?”
“My cousin lives in Manchester and I’d come to visit him. We managed to have half a day before he got called in for a last-minute shift at work. I missed my train home by literally seconds, then I saw that the next one was cancelled, so I thought I’d get some planning done while I wait for the one after to arrive.”
Matty was listening to her intently now, his chin resting on his hand. Eleanor wondered what he was doing here. Since he arrived, he’d alternated between drinking cups of coffee, scribbling frantically in his Moleskine, and watching the comings and goings of customers out of the corner of his eye. Before she could ask him, however, he dived in with yet another question for her
“And what sort of planning would that be?”
“Factorising quadratics with Year 9, area of a trapezium with Year 7, and recurring decimals revision with Year 11.”
Matty exhaled loudly, leaning back in his chair, the glint in his eye telling her that he was impressed. “You’re a maths teacher then.”
“Bingo.”
“That must be a tough gig.”
“Just a bit.”
“You seem quite young to be a teacher.” It was a statement, but the furrow in his brows betrayed his confusion.
“I’m 22, so I guess I am.”
“Do you enjoy it?”
Eleanor hesitated, considering what her reply would be, and Matty waited patiently, almost watching the cogs turning in her brain. “I do, for the most part. I work with an amazing team of people, and I love seeing the difference I make to those kids’ lives. Not everyone has that purpose, so I’m lucky really.”
Matty narrowed his eyes at her, knowing that she wasn’t telling the full story. And that was how Eleanor found herself pouring her heart out to the curly haired singer, the troubles that she had bottled up inside her for months finally breaking free, whether she liked it or not.
She told him about how she lived in a permanent state of exhaustion, tired from the never-ending to do lists and the unbearable repetitiveness of her daily life. She told him about the part of her that regretted throwing herself into such a big career at such a young age, and how she felt that she missed her chance to be young and wild and carefree because she’d always been so focused on her work. She told him about how she’d thought about leaving her current life behind and starting again so many times, but had ultimately been too scared of failing and letting people down when they’d given up so much to help her get to where she was now.
To his surprise, Matty didn’t feel like interrupting her once during her monologue. He simply wanted to let her talk, to let her share her thoughts with him. It was like he could actually see some of the weight lifting off the girl’s shoulders as she unburdened herself of her worries, and it almost made him smile to think that she felt comfortable enough to tell him when he somehow knew that she had never told anyone else. So he just listened, letting her ramble on until she ran out of things to say.
When that time finally came, Eleanor let out a big exhale and looked Matty in the eye as he responded with one word: “Wow.”
Eleanor felt her face start to burn and she buried it into her hands. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry. This is probably the last way you wanted to spend your afternoon, being on the receiving end of my word vomit.”
“You know what, it actually made a refreshing change. Didn’t expect to get recruited as a therapist today.” Matty watched her shoulders start to shake under her blanket of blonde waves, and was shocked at the worry he felt that she might be crying. But when she looked up she was giggling, despite the faint sheen of tears in her eyes.
“Oh, so you’re my therapist now?”
“You mean you didn’t purposefully choose me? I’m wounded.” That made her laugh properly this time, and Matty found himself unable to hold a soft smile back any longer before his expression turned more serious. “Look, I’m not going to pretend like I know how to solve your problems, and I’m not even sure if you want me to, but can I say one thing?” She nodded. “I think that if the people that you’re worried about letting down really love you, they’ll be more upset if you carry on doing something that’s making you miserable for their sakes than if you give it up.”
Eleanor mulled over the singer’s words and whilst she knew deep down that they were true, it didn’t change the fact that she was absolutely terrified at the idea of giving up teaching. Below the supportive façades, she knew her parents would always berate her for leaving such a stable, well-paid career, and her pride would never let her return to work at her current school with people that she adores if this mysterious plan B failed. She relayed all of this to Matty.
“Well who gives a flying fuck what anyone else thinks anyway! What’s the point in life if you don’t do something you love?”
“But teaching is the only thing I’ve ever even contemplated doing, I’ve got absolutely no idea what else I’d do.”
“Listen, you’re young, intelligent, beautiful, and you’ve literally got the whole world out there with so many possibilities - it doesn’t matter if you don’t get it right first time.”
“Careful, Healy, I might start thinking you like me,”
Now, if you asked Matty Healy of The 1975 why his immediate response was to do a stereotypically girlish impression of that comment before flipping off the young woman sat in front of him, he wouldn’t be able to tell you. Nor could he explain why, after only an hour of talking to her, he felt such an incredible fondness for her, an almost brotherly affection, which prompted him to tell her how amazing she seemed to be. But he could describe how his heart soared as she laughed at him, and then sunk as she realised the time and started hurriedly packing her stuff into her bag.
“Shit, shit, shit. Do you think I can make the train in 5 minutes? I can’t miss this one as well. This is all your fault you know!”
“Hang on, how is it my fault? You’re the one who started emptying your brains onto the table.”
“And you were the one who made the mistake of listening.” Eleanor swung her bag onto her shoulder, and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek. “Thank you.”
Then she was running out of the coffee shop, a blur of blonde hair and floral perfume.
It was only then that Matty realised he didn’t even know her name.
***
1 year later…
“Lovely to meet you, take care.”
As soon as the interviewee had left the room, the smiles on four of the five faces dropped and they let out a sigh.
“Guys, if you want to actually do this, we do need to hire someone.”
Matty tugged at his hair in frustration. “It’s not that we’re not on board with it, Jamie, it’s just got to be with the right person. I mean, it’s letting someone totally unknown to us into an entire chapter of our lives, not just our careers.”
It was just over a month ago that The 1975 had told Jamie Oborne that they were ready to start working on their next album. In the same meeting, Jamie had proposed an idea that he had been mulling over for a while. The response to ‘A Theatrical Performance of an Intimate Moment’ had been better than anyone had anticipated, and the fans always loved seeing behind the scenes footage. So, Jamie had suggested filming the entire journey of their next album, from concept to creation to tour, and releasing it as a mini-series. Of course, the band could get the footage themselves, but whether they would actually remember to do it was a different story.
That was how they found themselves in a boiling hot room in the London office of Dirty Hit, having collectively decided against all 15 people they had interviewed for the role of documentarian.
“I mean, they all just seem so serious,” Matty continued.
“Boring, you mean,” George muttered.
“This thing does have to look good, though, for it to work, and these were the most qualified of all the candidates,” Jamie countered.
“We don’t fucking care about qualified!”
“I think what Matty’s trying to say, mate,” Ross calmly cut in, “Is that we were thinking of something more low key. More of a collection of home movies than something carefully filmed and edited.”
“Yeah, we don’t know how long this thing is going to go on for, way over a year at least, and we don’t want to feel like we’re putting on a show the whole time. It’s got to be authentic. It’s gonna be fucking weird at the start but after a while we just want it to be like a mate is casually filming what we’re doing.”
Jamie had to admit that George closed their argument well, and he was sold on it. He just wished that they had told him sooner.
“Okay, okay, I get it and I’m happy for us to go ahead with that. There’s one more person for us to speak to today, who was kind of my wildcard, so if she’s more what you’re looking for then we can revisit some of the other applications tomorrow.” With that, Jamie left the room to get the last candidate.
“A wildcard? What is this, mid-2000s X Factor?” Matty huffed, to the amusement of the others.
But any annoyance that Matty felt was washed away in an instant when he saw who his manager was holding the door open for.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Matty’s words might have sounded rude, but it was the smile spreading across his face that shocked everyone the most.
“I’m here in an attempt to annoy you for longer this time,” Eleanor smirked.
“Well, you’re failing miserably at this point. How are you?”
“I’m good. Really good, actually.” A genuine smile crossed her face this time. “Didn’t think you’d remember me to be honest.”
“I often wondered what you decided to do with your life in the end,” Matty shrugged. “It frustrated me knowing everything and then nothing at all. So I guess you have already succeeded in your goal to annoy me.”
Before you had chance to reply, another voice broke through to join the conversation. “Sorry to interrupt this lovely chat, but would someone kindly explain what the hell is going on here?” It was George, and he, like everyone else in the room, was stumped by Matty’s sudden personality transplant.
Now very aware of all of the eyes on her, she looked to Matty for help, who simply sat back in his chair before saying “Well, I think you’re sat in the better seat for a storytime, don’t you? Anyway, I don’t even know your name.”
So Eleanor told the room about how she had met their frontman, briefly mentioning the life crisis that she’d been having at the time, whilst Matty impatiently waited to hear what happened after she left the coffee shop. She told them how she’d stayed in teaching until the end of that school year, before handing in her notice. Her boss had been sad to see her go, but told her that if she ever decided that she wanted to come back then he’d always find a job for her. Eleanor’s family, however, reacted quite differently; she ended up having a massive row with her parents about it and her relationship with them still hadn’t quite mended fully. Ever since her move to London, she had been taking whatever bar jobs she could find and spent her days applying to any jobs that took her fancy.
Matty couldn’t help the pride that was coursing through him for the young woman sat across from him. She had taken all of those ‘What ifs’ that she’d told him about, thrown them in the fire and walked away, when he knew that all of her instincts would have been telling her to do the opposite. He looked around at the others, and was both amused and pleased to find that they all seemed to be as entranced by Eleanor as he had been at their first meeting. In Matty’s eyes, she was the perfect fit, and he could tell that she was quickly winning the others over as well.
Surprisingly, it was Adam who spoke up first. “So, you’re saying that you’re totally unqualified for this job?”
“Never done anything like it before in my life. But it sounded interesting and I’m always up for learning new stuff.”
“Never been behind a camera? Never had anything to do with the music industry?” Ross asked, slightly taken aback by her honesty.
“Not the music industry, but I used to study music at school and I still play the piano from time to time.”
“And I take it you’re on board for annoying Matty as much as humanly possible?” It was George this time.
“Oh 100%.”
Matty rolled his eyes, but the smile remained on his face. She’d done it. Now, there was only one person left to convince. Matty quickly joined the others in looking at Jamie the way they used to look at their parents when the ice cream van pulled up on their road.
Eleanor watched on nervously as some sort of telepathic conversation seemed to transpire between the band and their manager.
Eventually, the silence broke and a new chapter began.

description of my lover | matty healy.
hi !! here's an adorable chapter!! i hope you'll enjoy it as much as i do!! (matty is just a simp is this writing tbh..)
Tumblr media
The last rays of the sun slipped through the patterned curtains of the room, creating a golden tapestry that enveloped every corner of the space. Seated cross-legged on the bed, his journal resting on his knees, he let the pen glide across the paper, allowing the words to flow from his heart with an ineffable intensity.
Beside him, she slept peacefully, her soft, steady breath giving rhythm to the air. Her face, bathed in the light of twilight, seemed like a delicate, sacred work of art. His gaze could not turn away from her, absorbing every detail of her being.
Lines took shape under his pen, each one dedicated to her and the way she illuminated his life. Her eyes, two sparkling jewels in a case of tenderness, transported him to a world where only the depth of her gaze and the intensity of their shared emotions existed.
Her slightly half-open eyelids hinted at distant dreams, a part of herself she shared with him alone. Every bat of her eyelashes was a silent promise of trust, an invisible bond that united them beyond words.
The contours of her face, sculpted with divine grace, evoked infinite softness. Every angle, every curve, was an expression of the perfection to which she naturally aspired. He gazed at her, fascinated by the way even the stillness of her sleep seemed to dance with innate elegance.
Her lips, soft and inviting, were the source of so many shared moments. Every smile she gave him was a caress to his soul, every kiss exchanged was a promise of their unconditional love. He wrote the words as if each letter were traced by the memory of her warm breath against his skin.
Her hair was spread out on the pillow, a silken case that framed her face in a way that defied description. His fingers, as he scribbled, wanted to lose themselves in her locks, slipping between them like filaments of nocturnal silk.
The words formed in his mind, each one a musical note to the song of their love. He wrote of how her laughter brightened even the darkest days, how her presence was like a refreshing breeze in a stifling world.
Her hands, placed with natural grace on the sheet, seemed to be an extension of her heart. He explored the story written in her gestures, the silent language of her touch that made him feel at home, even in the midst of a tumultuous world.
Her secret dreams seemed to dance behind her closed eyelids, and he divined them, interweaving them into the words that took shape beneath his pen. He spoke of the hopes she carried, the aspirations that would animate her in the days to come.
The words filled the page, each sentence a declaration of love and a celebration of what they shared. And as the sun continued its slow descent over the horizon, her sleeping face was bathed in a golden, almost unreal glow.
His heart beat with renewed passion, each word a faithful reflection of what he felt. He wrote with increasing intensity, his thoughts spilling onto the paper like an enchanting melody.
Finally, he put down the pen, the open notebook in his lap, the words printed on the pages like an imprint of his love for her. His eyes rested on her face, so close to him, lit by the setting sun.
The silence of the room was filled with the echo of his thoughts and feelings. His heart beat to the rhythm of their connection, each beat a reminder of the intensity of his love.
Her lips occasionally smiled, a softness that spread across her face like moonlight over the ocean. His fingers were tempted to touch them, to caress that soft reflection of her joy. But he refrained, leaving her rest in peace, knowing that it was precious and deserved to be preserved.
The light wind through the window gently lifted a few strands of her hair, bringing them to life like moonbeams filtering through the branches of a tree. Her hair, so soft to the touch, was like an enchanted forest he wanted to explore again and again.
His thoughts drifted to her entire being, wandering into the subtle contours of her silhouette. Every curve, every fold of the sheet that covered her, was an invitation to admire her in all her beauty. She was like a work of art he never tired of contemplating.
He thought back to all the moments they'd shared, every burst of laughter shared, every silence shared, every kiss exchanged, every time he'd made love to her in that bed. His heart palpitated as he thought of how she had managed to capture his mind and soul, to become the star that guided his steps through the night.
The notebook in front of him was his sanctuary, a place where he could express emotions that sometimes seemed indescribable. Every word he put down on paper was an offering, proof of the deep love he felt for her. He knew that his texts were imperfect odes to her greatness, melodies that could never fully capture the magic she embodied.
As the golden glow of the sunset intensified, she seemed to melt into the room, becoming part of the magnificent landscape surrounding her. The warm hues blended with her skin, creating a visual harmony that only accentuated her natural beauty.
He lay gently beside her, their breaths mingling in the darkness. His fingers slipped to link with hers, a silent embrace that conveyed all that words could not express. He could hear her heartbeat, feel her warmth close to him, and he knew that this was where he belonged, beside her, in this moment, in this embrace.

Tumblr media
loud shouting could be heard from the place you once called home. this is no home. it hasn't been in months.
you used to love this place and the person you shared it with.
it used to give you a warm and cozy feeling, like a hot chocolate in front of a fireplace, like a comfy body engulfing you under a thick blanket.
but now whenever you're here an estranging feeling fills your body, terrible thoughts consume your mind. just seeing the person you once loved gives you the ick, it fills you with rage.
but not just that - it's also guilt. you're constantly thinking of what you could've done better or just differently. it's also guilt from the things you just didn't do.
not everything is your own guilt though.
someone you trusted with your life has proven themselves to be a master manipulator and a major guilt tripper.
“you’re making me miserable, why don't you ever care about my feelings?”
but you do.
“you can't say that, not after everything i've done for you!”
everything they did for you?
“i can't live without you. do you want me to hurt myself?”
nothing but big talking.
“if you loved me, you wouldn't do this! i guess you just never cared about us in the first place.”
from all the people, you never cared?
this constant state of fear, the constant feeling of confusion, it's unbearable. everyday is a delicate balancing act, walking on eggshells, trying to avoid any triggers that would cause another outburst of emotions.
even the calm moments are overpowered by the persistent feeling of anxiety. the calm before the storm - as they always say.
you feel trapped - suffocating in a cage, locked away in a musty basement, made from your own self-doubt and guilt.
the person you once loved so dearly has become a stranger. their kindness is replaced by cruelty, their humor is now like rubbing salt into a wound - it makes you question your own worth.
enough with all their toxic palaver. you can't stand it anymore.
everytime you look in the mirror you can see in your own eyes how you're losing your shine. they're dragging you down. with each passing day you feel yourself slipping away, consumed by the endless cycle of manipulation, control and anger.
for once you just wanted some silence.
you know you need to escape, to reclaim your life and most importantly: your sanity. although the whispers of guilt and the fear of the unknown keeps you tethered.
however, there's always hope.
a long and exhausting fight was the last straw. you wait until they go to sleep to go to the bathroom and text your best friend - matty.
“i need you help”
“are you okay? what happened?”
“just pick me up as soon as you can. i need to get out of here”
“I'll be over asap!!”
after 15-20 minutes he text you that he's downstairs. you tell him to come upstairs to help you carry your bags. your most important belongings all packed in bags - scared they'll destroy it once they notice you're gone.
you think about leaving a note behind, but decided not to, they don't deserve this kind of goodbye.
the downtown lights by the blue nile is playing - matty put his ‘hats’ cd in.
you watch the dark buildings pass by. as you drove, the rhythm of passing streetlights and the hum of the engine create a lulling effect, a temporary escape from your turbulent thoughts. the cityscape, a mix of the old and new, felt like a metaphor for your own life - moving forward yet carrying fragments of the past.
finally you arrive and you heave the bags up to matty's own flat. once your hands are empty he embraces you tightly, swaying you around a little.
“you're safe now.” he softly says. as the words strike your ear, a faint smile creeps on your face. it's over now.
“get comfortable on the couch, i’ll bring you some blankets and pillows.”
as he turns around to walk to his bedroom, you start to think: alone on a cold couch. the ticking of his clock would drive you literally insane from your insomnia ridden mind.
“actually-”
matty turns back around, his look is one of curiosity and interest.
“actually, could i maybe…sleep in your bed? just for tonight?” your voice was barely a whisper.
“oh, sure thing! i’ll take the couch then.”
“no i mean…could you stay with me? i just…don't…want to be alone.” you admitted, your voice trembling slightly.
his heart aches when he hears you. just looking at you evokes feelings of pity - you're like a stray puppy. he wants to hold you and tell you that things will get better now. he's certain they will.
he grins. “okay, i’ll stay with you.”
you follow him to the bedroom. since all your stuff is in bags, he gives you some of his clothes - a hoodie and a pair of shorts.
when you come back from the bathroom, now in his clothes, he's already lying in bed. “do you wanna watch something? any comfort movies or series?”
a worn out grin adorns your face. you climb into bed right next to him, telling him what you want to watch.
you snuggle closer, resting your head on matty’s chest, your hand lightly gripping his shirt.
the steady rhythm of his heartbeat is a soothing balm to your frayed nerves.
matty wraps an arm around your shoulder, pulling you in tighter, his fingers tracing absent patterns on your arm.
you're focused on the movie, yet he seems to notice that your mind is drifting off here and there.
“you okay?” he glances down at you, smiling faintly.
you nod, eyes focused on the screen but your mind focused on the warmth and safety you feel in this embrace.
“yeah, this is nice.” you whisper.
after a while, matty's fingers slowly drift up to your hair. he begins to gently play with a few strands, letting them run through his fingers. his touch was tender, filled with care and affection.
for the first time in a long time, you felt a sense of peace.

Show Me Yours | Matty Healy [1]
chapter one, act one: antichrist
~first chapter of my Matty Healy x bandmate!OC, more coming soon
Tumblr media
January 3rd 2010
"No."
"Please?"
Tommie groans twirling around on her cousin's bed so she's lying on her stomach instead of her back and looks over to where he's sitting at his desk chair.
"No, Adam, I don't want to."
"No," He says, in his usual 'I know better than you' tone, tilting his head in a way that reminds her exactly of her aunt, "You're afraid."
She gives him an unimpressed look and goes back to looking over the back of the old Radiohead vinyl she'd pinched from his little shelf of records that's tucked away in one corner of his bedroom.
"I don't wanna be in your stupid X-Factor wannabe band with your junkie friends."
"Please," A sarcastic voice comes from the bedroom door as it's pushed open, the self-made 'please knock' sign obviously meaning nothing to the intruder. The vinyl is snatched from her hands and the single bed dips with the newly added weight, "We're at least BGT worthy."
She rolls her eyes sitting up as he moves the record out of her reach, "Don't mess with me today, Healy."
"Aw," He pouts looking over at her, lashes fluttering in mock flattery, "But it's my favourite thing to do."
"Why do you always have to piss me off on my first day here?" She questions, bringing her knees to her chest and wrapping her arms around them.
He flashes his smile, wild curly hair falling in his eyes, "Because it's my favourite pastime."
Adam snatches the record back, putting it onto his pile on the floor as he raises a brow, "Shouldn't you be at work?"
"Day off to welcome Miss Thomas."
"Day wasted." She mutters from behind him.
Matty mimics her in a high-pitched voice and she rolls her eyes. He grabs one of her ankles and pulls it down to his lap, tickling at her socked foot causing her to squeal and grip one of Adam's plain white pillows as her defence.
Matty flinches as the pillow is brought down upon his head, he dramatically grips his shirt and flops onto his back to look up as he gives his dramatic act of a death scene.
"Tommie!"
She sighs and goes to the door, "Yeah?"
"Your mother's on the phone, she's been calling you. Come down here."
She inwardly groans but forces herself down the stairs. Matty turns to Adam as soon as she's gone. Listening to the footsteps pause at the bottom of the stairs, a faint 'hello?' coming a few seconds later.
"Did she agree?"
"No."
He groans, flopping back on the bed again, curly hair creating a large painting upon the plain sheets. "Why?"
"Said she wants to do A Levels, go to university and- I quote, 'have a chance of making a name for herself'."
"That's what we're doing, making a name for ourselves."
"In a band about driving?"
Matty sighs, "I have a vision."
Adam sighs, muttering under his breath as he twists his chair around to look at the wall behind his desk. Focusing on a picture of him and Tommie when they were kids, back when he still lived in Wales before his dad got the job in Manchester.
"And the vision," Matty continues, lifting his hands in the air in front of him, "Has me upfront, some super hot models on each arm," Adam laughs at that part, and Matty lets out what can be described as a giggle, "Then you on guitar, George drumming away, Ross with his bass... and Tommie, right there with us, strumming her guitar and singing our songs."
"She's not into that stuff, you know that. She's too shy."
"She is not shy."
"Matty, it took her six years to speak to any of you."
He shrugs, "She was younger then."
"The stage isn't the place she should be, she's not comfortable with it, don't force her."
He sighs, "Do you think she'll help us on the album? If this thing goes through and we get the deal, do you think she'll help?"
"Of course she will, she's been with us since the start-"
The door reopens and she walks in quickly, grabbing the hoodie she had left on side before leaving again. Matty and Adam share a look before following after her as she charges down the stairs and out the front door.
"Hey, Tommie, wait."
Adam runs out barefoot as Matty shoves on Mrs Hann's heels, stumbling after them, "Tommie, wait."
Adam catches her arm, brow-raising, "Where are you going? What's wrong?"
She sighs, taking in a deep stuttering breath to try and regain her own thoughts. Everything is a jumbled mess and she shakes her head quickly to focus her eyes.
"My father-"
"What happened?" Matty asks from behind them.
Tommie's voice catches in her throat when she sees him standing there and Adam turns around to him, "Go back inside, Matty."
"What's happened?"
"Just- go inside, Matty."
Adam turns back to Tommie, gripping her hand a little tighter, "What's he done?"
"He's threatening court," She shakes her head and scoffs, "He's not wanted nothing to do with me for fifteen years, Adam, why does he want me now? It seems like when I've stopped trying to have a dad is when he's wanted to be one."
She pulls away to step back, "I'm uh, going down the shop."
"Tommie, come back inside, we'll chuck a film on-"
"No, no, I want some sweets, be back in a bit."
"Tom..."
⋆。 ゚☁︎。 ⋆。 ゚☾ ゚。 ⋆
"Hey."
She sighs slowly looking away from him as she hears his boots crunch on the gravel, "Go away, Healy."
He drops himself down beside her, looking out over the rugby pitch in front of them, the fence restricting the view of the local Wilmslow team trains.
They sit in silence, he doesn't say a thing after his initial greeting, just rests his elbows on his knees and keeps his gaze forward.
She taps her foot impatiently, kicking up dust and rocks as she plays with the strings of her hoodie.
"My dad, he never really stuck around," Tommie says suddenly, "He was there you know, picked me up every Wednesday, dropped me with my grandparents then went out, took me to football games on Sundays. But, it was more like a chore than him doing parent stuff."
"I uh, didn't know."
"I never realised he was a bad dad to me until my little sister turned three, two years ago. I was sitting in their living room. He came in from work, kissed his wife on the head, kissed my sister on the cheek, then sat at the table with my step-brother to help him with his homework before making dinner."
Matty doesn't open his mouth to say anything, which she's shocked by, he just listens, "I just sat there watching, and the entire time all I could think was that I wasn't worth the effort. He does everything for those kids, and I feel so bad because he's an absolutely amazing father to them. But then it makes me wonder, why couldn't he be that for me? Why couldn't he be there? Pick me up, make me dinner, help with my homework?"
She rubs at her nose with her sleeve and then shakes her head as she chuckles through the rising tears, "It's stupid."
"It's not stupid," He says quietly, his hand lifts and he hesitates to pat her back but settles on brushing some hair back from her face, "You have a right to feel that way."
She buries her head into her folded arms and grips her elbows as she breathes in deeply, breathing in the scent of the grass and dirt, focusing on the yells of the rugby players in the distance.
"Tommie, look at me please."
She sighs and lifts her head slowly, "I didn't know that. You don't," He pauses, not sure if he should say what he's thinking, not wanting to make the situation worse but he does anyway, "You don't talk about your family much. Just Adam and your grandparents."
She sighs, "You wanna know?"
"I-" He does, he really does. He wants to know everything.
"My single working mother and I live with my grandparents because we can't afford our own place. I'm the oldest sibling, by six years, of four, two brothers, one half, one step, and a half-sister. Don't talk to my dad much anymore, only once a month when he argues with his wife and remembers I exist, my youngest brother, JJ, he has a different mother too, dad speaks to him more than me but not much. He's the only sibling I speak to."
"Why don't you just move up here? For good?"
She sighs, "This is my last holiday up here, Healy."
"What?"
"I've got a job now, retail, it's awful but it's money, and I'm about to do my A levels-"
"You can still come up for the summer."
"And have a whole six weeks off work? I can't do that, I could barely have this week off to come up."
He sighs, "But, you were supposed to come up for your birthday this year. First birthday in Manchester."
She shrugs, tracing over the rips in her jeans, "Don't like my birthday anyway."
He gasps dramatically, hitting her shoulder, "Why? I love my birthday, getting presents and lots of attention, it's great."
"Not when you're the oldest sibling with broke parents." He tilts his head and she sighs, turning away from his gaze, "My mother's at work, most of the time my grandparents are too, and my dad hasn't remembered a birthday since I was five, that was only when my nannie was alive back then. He had her to keep her on track all the time. When she died, that's when it all went downhill."
"It is now my life's purpose to make you like your birthday."
She scoffs, "I'm not like you, Healy. Don't like big things and loads of attention, not made for it."
He shrugs, "It doesn't always need to be like that, it can be quiet, small things."
She shrugs again, then he goes back to the issue of her not coming up for the summer, "Why don't you just quit? Get a job up here for the summer then go back."
"It's not that easy, we need the money. And if I leave and they don't take me back, what then? And I can't risk worrying about that when I need to be focusing on school. If I don't focus on my results, I won't get into a good university, if I don't get into a good uni I can't get a good job. If I don't get a good job with a decent salary then- then I'll never get out. I'll never leave the stupid village and escape the past. I need to leave, Matty."
She runs her hands through her hair, burning her head into her knees. He moves his hand to rub at her back, careful not to startle her. He knows how she feels about touch and boundaries. But when she doesn't flinch and leans back into his touch, he lets his palm lay flat drawing circles into her hoodie.
"You're taking on too much."
She scoffs, "We don't all have rich parents."
He looks over at her now, watching her run both hands through her hair to tuck the stands behind her ears, "Is that what this is about, money? I can help-"
"No," She says quickly, regretting her little dig, "No, I don't want your help. You work hard for your money, in that shitty hippie cafe-"
"Shitty? It's many... questionable things, but it's not... that shitty."
She laughs a little and looks away, "What about the album?"
She sighs slowly, "Healy-"
"We're gonna get one, we are, I can feel it, one more gig, that guy, said he could get us signed up with a label if we record some EP's."
"I'm not in the band, that's your guys' things."
"You're a part of the band, Tommie."
"No, I'm not. I just sit in on your practices with you."
"Okay," He nods, "Answer me this," She hums, "Do you help us by playing guitar?"
"Well, sometimes."
"Yes or no questions."
"Yes."
He nods, "Do you come to every gig with us?- When you're here?"
"Yes."
"Every practice?"
"Yes."
"Did you let me steal some of your work for our songs?"
"Yes- what?"
He chuckles as she turns to look at him quickly, "What songs? What work?"
"My new songs," He says leaning away from her hand that reaches out to hit him, "And your poetry."
"You read my notebook?"
He catches her hand this time when she tries to hit him, "It was open."
"Open?"
"On the kitchen table, I just glanced... for a single second."
"I hate you so much."
She pushes him down, using his head to stand and starts walking away, he scrambles to his feet following after her, "It's really good, and I only borrowed one line."
"Which one?"
"Not telling."
She rolls her eyes, walking on and he has to jog to keep up with her long strides despite having a good few inches on her.
"Vogue."
"What?"
"Vanity Fair."
Then it dawned on her, "That was my best line, Healy!"
He giggles and runs off but she chases after him, shouting down the street, "I'm still not joining your shitty band."
He rolls his eyes, grabbing her arm to drag her towards the old shop in town, "Where are we going?"
"Shops, to cheer you up."
"Ooh," She rubs her hands together with a grin, "You gonna be my sugar daddy now, Healy?"
He swings an arm around her shoulder, smiling down at her, "Of course sugar baby, what do you want, a Ferrari?"
"More of a red bull girl. There's just something about Sebastian Vettel in that race suit." She makes a noise close to a moan and watches the redness spread up his cheeks.
"Well, I can't get you a Vettel, but I can get you something very close."
He moves the hand hanging loosely over her shoulder to push her glasses up her face and then cup over her eyes and a smile spreads across her face as she blindly walks along the path in front of them. "Jenson?"
"Nope."
He stops them, turning her with his hands still covering her eyes. He drops his hand and she looks up, raising a brow.
"Mr. Bolas."
"Even better."
They head into the old charity shop, glancing around the new boxes, Bolas looks up from his desk, peering over the top of his reading glasses.
"New box out the back, Healy."
"Thanks, Mr. Bolas."
Tommie waves at him and he sends a sweet smile before she's dragged by Matty down the old creaking stairs and into the storage room.
He lets go of her to sit crisscrossed in front of the box, taking out the old records one by one, "Ooh, you'll like this one."
She moves the old box of books to sit beside him, taking the old minted edition Black Sabbath record from his hands, "Holy shit, this is cool."
"Swapsies?"
She passes over the box of books she's yet to look in so she can look through the records as he looks through the books, picking out an old battered Tennesse Williams one.
"Hey, I'm doing that for A level this year."
"Have it."
She takes it from him flicking through, smiling at the little annotations someone has put in the play.
"I have his poetry book."
She looks at the Jack Kerouac book in his hand, "I think I've read some of that, it's good."
"Yeah?"
He flicks it open, looking through the book a little, "Woah, that's stupid."
He starts laughing and she nudges his arm so she can look, '1st June the 1975'.
"I've never seen anyone say 'the' before they write the year."
"That's weird, suppose we say it like that half the time though."
He hums in agreement, finger tracing over the words of the page, "1975, Jesus, this book is old."
"You getting it?"
He shrugs then shakes his head, "Nah."
"Fine, then I will."
She adds it atop her Streetcar Named Desire book pushing them aside as she goes back through the records, picking out a few more for herself and some old sixties ones for Adam.
"The 1975." He says again.
She rolls her eyes, "You're not going to shut up about that are you?"
"Nope."
He hears the chime of his phone and digs it out of his back pocket, flicking it open to see the text from the guy he used to go to school with.
"Ah, great." He grins down at the device, typing out a reply.
"What?"
He drags her to her feet, carrying her things for her, "This guy I used to go to school with is training to become a tattoo artist, he's the one that's done all ours. He has a free spot this afternoon."
"Are you getting another one?"
"Yeah, wanna come with?"
"Can I get one?"
"Can you forge your mother's signature?"
She nods without a second thought, "How'd you think I went on that skiing trip? Mam never would've let me go if she knew I needed permission."
He chuckles, putting the things on the counter to get scanned, and leans his side against the table, "What will you get?"
She shrugs, "I don't know, like a circle or something?"
"Why?"
She answers with another lift of her shoulders, "Or a box, like a little frame."
"Why?" He asks again.
"Well, I have like twenty minutes to decide on one. The shape is simple, easy. No pressure, and I can fill it later on, or cover it when I decide."
"What are you having?" She asks as they smile at Mr Bolas before taking the little paper brown bag full of their new stuff.
"Finishing off my we are king's tattoo."
She nods, "We should get a matching one."
"Like what?" She turns to him as he holds the door open for them to walk outside.
He looks up in thought, "1975."
She shakes her head, "That's really stuck with you, huh?"
He nods, "It's just so-" He trails off, "Weird."
He looks back down at her when he finishes and she shrugs, "Sure."
"Sure?"
"Why not?"
⋆。 ゚☁︎。 ⋆。 ゚☾ ゚。 ⋆
"Look."
Tommie looks up from where she's waiting, tearing her eyes away from the George Orwell book in her hands to see Matty's freshly wrapped tattooed skin. Showing not one, but two new tattoos. '1975' then a large rectangle box, much like the one she'd decided to have.
"Are you joking?"
"What?"
She moves her arm to show her 'the 1975' tattoo on her wrist. "You said the."
"Well," He shrugs, sitting beside her, "It looked a bit silly."
She moves her untatted arm to punch at his one and he gasps when she hits the freshly inked skin. "Ow."
"Good," She turns away, "Now I look like an idiot. I don't even know anyone born in 1975."
"It's cool." He tries to reassure and he glances at him in the corner of her eye, "Cool?"
"Yeah... cool. Edgy. Modern."
He nods, more to reassure himself than her and turns away, "I'm sorry, it's still matching."
"Let's go before I kill you."
"You could never."
"I could," She shrugs, "And with the amount of criminal minds I watch, I could get away with it."
He nods in thought, "You know what else you could get away with?"
"Hmm?"
"Being in a really cool band."
She rolls her eyes, "Matthew..."
He sighs, "Come on, Tommie, why not? What's stopping you?"
"A lot actually, money, job, school, mam-"
He rolls his eyes, "You can still go to school, I mean, you've basically finished your GCSE's anyway."
"I'm not skipping out on my A levels, I have dreams, Matty."
"Dreams?"
She nods, "I want to be a writer, and do good things. My English teacher, she entered me in a poetry competition, if I win I get to publish my own book."
He watches the light rise in her eyes, her cheeks tint pink as she hides herself behind her hair, keeping her gaze low on the floor and tilting her head down so he can't see over the baseball cap.
"That's great, but what then?"
She looks up at him raising a brow, "You release a poetry book, it's good, yeah, but what happens to it? You die, grow old, then years later they study it in schools making kids hate it and not actually understand it, so what?"
"So what?"
"Turn it into songs, put it out there for people to study now, to enjoy, make music, let people feel what you feel-"
"They can do that with poetry too, you know."
"You love music, you're the biggest music geek I know despite your lack of any knowledge of anything outside of Arctic Monkeys-"
"Hey, I like the Cure too."
He ignores her comment and continues on, "You're the second best guitar player I know- after me of course- you can sing really good, don't deny it, I was at Mrs H's birthday I heard you-"
"I was drunk-"
"Still good."
She sighs and looks away from him, it's a sharp sigh, in and out quickly. Her hand grips the tote bag on her shoulder, the plastic wraps around her tattoos scrunching up and making an awkward uncomfortable sound.
"What if it goes wrong?" She asks, he closes his mouth at that watching her ginger eyebrow raise in question, "What if we spend years hopelessly putting out music for no one to like it, for nothing to happen, what if we're stuck living in a dingy van in the middle of a field because none of us have a single qualification between us to get a solid job?"
"That's a lot of what ifs," He says, then he grabs her hand, squeezing it, "But what if we made it?"
"Matty, I-" She sighs pausing in their walking to look up at him, "I'd love it if we made it, if we got to share your music with everyone, but, it's not me."
"But it can be."
"Matty."
She turns slowly, but he catches her arm, walking around her to stop her from going on, "No, listen please."
"I have only ever dreamed of one thing in my entire life," He says desperately, "One thing. This band, me, Hann, George, Ross and you, the five of us. Just like those summers in the shed."
She turns her whole head away and he moves to be in her line of sight, "Please, Tommie."
"I-" She sighs again, "I'll help. But, I'm not being in the band, but I'll help. I'll help Adam with guitar riffs and look over your lyrics if you want. I'll even let you borrow, with credit, some lines from my notebook."
"Great, welcome to the band."
"Not in the band."
"Tommie," He says sternly, "You've always been a part of the band."
~thank you for reading! part two is being published later on today with the next parts coming next week! Sorry that the first few chapters and slow and jumpy, just trying to get to the good parts

hey guys
here’s how i imagine the characters in my new girl au
⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚:*⋆.*:・゚.: ⋆*・゚: .⋆
Matty
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ok so matty is like 22-23ish in the story but i picture him like this in my head with the 2014 long curly mohawk that is like the aftermath of the icky 2013 shorter straightened mohawk that i hope never comes back
George
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so for george i imagine him pre hair bleach when he still had his hair brown slightly curly but with a little bit of his 2014 bleached mohawk style to it just less fried lol and he definitely had most of his tattoos he had in 2014 because it’s essential to the character ok i love him sm anyways
Ross
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sorry ross girlies but he’s very much 2014 ross in this NOT with the shaved head but also not with the hot long hair he has now and he has a few tattoos but not a lot not as much as george i imagine him being pretty simple with the way he dresses in this story not too cool like george or messy like matty he’s just a simple black t shirt and jeans kind of guy and that’s ok we still love him
Violet
ok so violet is ME but i don’t want to post pics of myself and force you all to imagine me into your book so here’s a little description of the character violet in this: pasty white girl bleached blond hair with brown roots growing in, septum and nose pierced and a lot of ear piercings like lobes and going all the way up the helix. she doesn’t have a lot of tattoos because of modeling and stuff like she can take out all her piercings if needed but in this made up world she has a few tattoos and a lot of piercings and she can still do her job <3
Reader
reader is supposed to be YOU but if you don’t like that then that’s fine, leave it up to the imagination how y/n looks but she has a very cute simply and cozy sense of style like i’m picturing cardigans, colored tights, and silly hair clips but aside from that, take your own creative liberties on how y/n looks
Adam
adam isn’t even in this story YET he will be soon i swear i wouldn’t leave him out like that ok also i can’t add any more images to this post but i imagine adam in his 2014 era like he’s pretty simple i’m seeing a lot of white tank tops like i feel like that’s kind of his thing white tank tops and leather jackets ok i swear he’ll show up eventually k bye love you all

Same For You (14) : Can't Get Enough
Series Masterlist
(13) Take Me Higher
A/n: a huge thank you to my love @achangeofheartx ilysm, thank you for reading this for me, i miss you. Heads up everyone, its a long one and im not entirely sure when the next part will be out so enjoy this for a while hehe. Love you all - Lou
The Uber drops her off at Matty's house 15 minutes later. She had texted him a few times and tried to call him but didn't get a reply. She thinks maybe he's fallen asleep but her worry had truly started to set in so she had to at least try to see if he was okay.  It was unlike Matty to leave through a session, sure they were nearly done but he was usually the last to leave and if he did he never left without saying goodbye and a hug or two. She politely knocks on the door twice, waiting for some kind of sound from inside. She can hear a low mumbling sound so she knocks again, hoping he’d be close enough to hear her now. The house falls silent for a few moments before she hears shuffling again. Her hand finds the door  and she knocks once more, deciding if he didn't answer this time she'd give in and head home.
She hears someone swear inside and a few moments later someone is fumbling with the door handle. Inch by inch she sees him and her throat dries. Her eyes rake slowly down his form but to him it’s quicker than a blink of an eye, he still notices though, and if he was in his usual ‘Matty state of mind’: the Matty that fancies her like mad and whose heart would pick up with so much as a single look from her; he’d smirk.  He stands before her, his hair a mess on top of his head, trousers undone and hardly on, a clear sign he had just put them on. He is shirtless and he looks a mess. But not an 'im sick and you've just woke me up" kind of a look, but a "you've just caught me after I've been fucking" kind of look.
One tell-tell sign is the red lipstick stains covering his neck. She immediately takes a step back, distancing herself from him. Her chest constricts, her throat dries, she swallows but that doesn’t help, she looks him up and down again, attempting to see this from a new angle, one in which doesn’t make her feel this way. She hates this, she hates that she stands there with a mouth opening and shutting like a fish out of water, she hates that it's him standing there, topless and looking like that. More than anything she hates how she finds herself feeling jealous, all whilst she can still feel the ghost of another man’s lips on her skin - on her lips. Her eyes fall to his lips and they move, he speaks. His voice is sudden and it has her stepping back more.
Walls back up but they’re weak but at least they’re there, whether they protect her at all is yet to be seen. She tries to push down the sicky feeling that makes its way into her stomach and the sudden nausea she feels is off putting.
"Y/n…" his voice trails off and he looks like a deer caught in the headlights. She hears a noise coming from further in the house and her eyes flick towards it, hearing a woman speak before she sees her.  A high pitch and entirely fake "babe, come back to bed" before she sees a blond girl wearing his shirt and a pair of panties standing at the middle of his stairs. She steps back again, another step back, more distance, it doesn’t stop the pain in her chest and it definitely does not stop her feeling sick.
"Y/n wait!!!" He says, she turns and starts walking down the street. She doesn't look back but he follows. He watches her chest as she walks, rising and falling rapidly, he hates it.
"Wait, I can explain!"  Matty shouts, despite jogging alongside her now.
"Matty it's fine you don't have to explain… it's pretty obvious what's going on" she says her voice is slightly snappy and she scolds herself for sounding like that. He stops her with a hand to her shoulder.
"You can't seriously be annoyed?" He asks and she sighs. She closes her eyes for a second or two before they’re opening. Glazed and glistening orbs finding his.
"I'm not annoyed Matty" she doesn’t sound like her and Matty really doesn’t like that. It feels odd, like he’s talking to a version of her that he doesn’t know, it feels formal and way too unfamiliar.
"Tell that to your face" his eyes flick around her features, despising the way his heart picks up as he looks at her.
“Go home Matty, you’ll freeze out here” she says, stepping back again until his hand falls from her shoulder.
“Y/n talk to me please”
"Sorry, George told us you weren't feeling well so I thought I'd come check on you but it's fine… I see you're preoccupied" her eyes flick back down the street to where his door can just about be seen.
"You're so annoyed" he says with a smirk, taking a step back, running a hand through his hair cockily. He can’t deny that he enjoys the fact he’s gotten under her skin and how she's trying to hide it but failing miserably.
"I was worried about you Matty! I thought you were sick! So I come to check on you only to find out you're not sick at all" she laughs "actually you're so ‘unsick’ that you're fucking some girl' she says, she looks away from him but he turns her face back to look at him. She cringes at how jealous she sounds.
"Y/n you were with Ross…." He says and she freezes. Shit… he heard. She's silent.
"You were with Ross… you are with Ross" he raises his hands in the air before they fall to his sides. His chest matches hers now, rising and falling harshly but in tandem with one another.
"Me and Ross… we're not… with each other" Matty rolls his eyes. He takes a step towards her and she takes one back, needing the distance.
"But you want to be and so does he"
"Matty we can't… we work together" she lies again and she hates that she does. She hates that she can't seem to tell him the truth.
"I wish you wouldn't lie to me… and stop! Stop saying that! Just be an adult and admit you want to be with him… it would save a lot of trouble"
"What's that supposed to mean?" She asks, raising her voice slightly.
"It means… maybe if you'd grow up a little and admit you like him that it would save us all a lot of time" he says, venom laced in his words. Their age gap was something that both of them agreed was something trivial, a fact that didn't really matter. But now he's bringing it up and using it to spite her. And it's horrible.
"Fuck you Matty' she spits back, turning and walking away from him again. He catches her quickly, pushing against her until her back is against the wall of a building. One hand rests against the brick next to her hand whilst the other anchors her to him with a firm grip on her hip. She’s breathless.
"Tell me you don't want Ross… tell me and I'll go tell that girl to fuck off…" he says, his hand moves to her waist and it feels electric - it feels like fire and ice combined. It burns against her skin and she has to close her eyes to push the feeling away. She can’t keep them closed for too long though, not wanting to miss a single moment.
"Matty…" she opens her eyes, she can feel him against her, really feel him. His chest against hers, soft but toned, so close that she can feel his erratic heartbeat against her chest. She can feel their breath combining, beginning to move in tandem, riding and falling together, against each other.
"I know you feel something here" one gentle hand presses against her chest between them, right over her heart.
"Matty stop" she clamps her eyes shut again, making him disappear. But the feelings she's been trying so hard to push away don't disappear either. And she hates that.
"Say it" he leans in closer, so much closer. She can feel his lips graze hers. She wants to move away from him, but that would make her seem bothered by his movements.
“Tell me you don't want me too” she feels his words against her lips. It's a featherlight touch, a graze, a barely-there connection but she feels it in her soul.
She breathes a heavy breath before her eyes flutter open, they cover his face, landing on his lips and one of her hands comes to rest against his cheek, soothing over the stubble covered skin. He watches as her eyes gloss over slightly, before she's whispering the two words that he has to pretend don't completely derail his world.
"I can't"
“Doesn’t mean you don’t want to” he says, begging her one last time, to change her mind, to tell him what he wants to hear, what he so desperately wants her to say.
“I can't” she repeats.
"Exactly" he pulls away and starts walking back to his house again.
"Matty! Wait" she says, halting him, he turns again. She wants to say that she does want Ross but she wants him too. But she can't.
"Whether you admit it or not.. Ross likes you and you were with him. I heard you… so as long as you keep denying how you feel… I'm going to go back up to my house" he says, pointing behind him "and I'm going to be with someone who can actually admit they want me" he walks two steps before he turns again.
"And preferably someone who doesn't also like my best friend" he leaves her standing there breathless and speechless.
She walks home in an attempt to clear her head, but Matty's words keep ringing around her mind. It makes her heartbeat quicken and she finds herself walking twice as quickly.
She showers - a long, hot shower and another attempt to rid the thoughts from her mind. It fails. She tries to sleep but she can't. She tosses and turns, getting more tired by the minute but still failing to sleep. She hates that he was right. She hates that once again he saw straight through her. She hates herself even more for the whole ordeal… for falling for someone so quickly and even more so for the feelings she bore towards Matty.
She almost wishes she never met them, it would make things easier, she wouldn't have come in and fucked up both their lives.
But selfishly (or not so, knowing they'd feel the same) she knows this, complicated and kind of fucked up situation is a thousand times better than not having them in her life.
She hates that she can’t stop thinking about his words, about that girl standing at the top of his stairs. She was nothing like that girl… is that why he picked her? To distract himself with something different, someone different. Someone who wasn't her. She feels her eyes flutter and she thinks she might, finally, fall asleep. But then her phone is blaring on her nightstand and she reaches far too quickly to retrieve it.
“Hi” she says sadly, knowing who was calling.
“Hi…” he says, his voice is quiet and unsure.
“I was trying to sleep… trying so goddamn hard to not call you… but I made a promise” he explains and she sighs.
“Maybe you should've broken it” her voice sounds bitter and she hates it. She hates that she's mad at him, because she doesn't really have the right. She brought this all in herself.
“Y/n/n…” his voice trails off, she hears the flick of his lighter and the soft exhale. She imagines the smoke piling out between his lips and once again she has to close her eyes to get the image out of her mind.
She feels her breath quicken, her eyes water and her lip shakes.
“Matty” his name slips out, the word wavering. He immediately knows she's crying and his heart twists in chest, as if someone's thrust a hand through the skin, grabbed hold and squeezed with all their strength.
“Do you not understand how hard this is for me?” She asks, each word is so quiet he nearly misses them.
Matty doesn't reply for a few moments, listening to the way she was breathing on the other side of the line. Bated and harsh, occasionally she'd inhale and it would be shaky. He made her cry. He swore he wouldn't do that again.
“It's hard for me too y/n/n…” she nods although she knows he can't see her.
“Do you wish you never met me? It would be easier that way”
“No y/n. No. Never” he says.
“Why do you not hate me Matty?” her voice shakes and he hears the sob that tears through her at the end of her words.
“I could never hate you”
“But why? I deserve it…” she wants to continue, to say, "I'm stringing you along, I'm falling for your best friend faster than I should be, I'm allowing myself to be with him but denying you and you should hate me for it” But she doesn't say that.
“No matter what you did… no matter what you will do… I don't think I could ever hate you”
“I don't think that's how it should be Matty” she rolls onto her back, looking up at the pictures hanging across her room. She both loves and hates how many there are of both men now. They’re there, always there, demanding that her heart belongs to them and she doesn’t have the power to say no, to either of them and that’s the problem.
“Who says?” She shrugs. They're silent for a second before she lets her intrusive side ask the question that's been on her lips from the moment he called.
“How was she?” He chuckles and it makes her smile. Why was she smiling?
“She wasn't you”
Tumblr media
The date is perfect, exactly like a dream, every detail is etched in her brain and she's sure it will stay there forever, marked as the best date she had ever been on.
He arrived with a huge bouquet of lilies and tulips, so big that she couldn't see his face when she opened the door. He lowered them slowly, making her giggle and reach for his collar, tugging him inside her flat. She felt freer this morning, hellbent on just focusing on the man in front of her. The man who, with one more tug from her, is lowering the flowers to the little table she has by the door and taking her waist into his large hands.
He lowers his mouth to hers gently, they both sigh in tandem. Bliss. This was bliss.
“I missed you” he murmurs against her mouth. She doesn't say it's been less than a day, she doesn't say that despite barely having a minute to think about anything but Matty and his words, and the phone call, she missed him too. She didn't even have to think about Ross to miss him, she didn't have to think at all. Her body and the way it longed for his touch, longed to see those dimples appear at his cheeks and the way his eyes glistened as he looked down at her. Her body and her mind missed him without even having to try.
“I missed you too” she says, slowly pulling away, she reaches for the flowers behind him, smiling widely down at them.
“Thank you, they're beautiful”
“Just like you” his words make her giggle and blush.
“Let me go put these in some water and then we can go” he nods, and follows her into her kitchen. She retrieves a vase from one of her cupboards, filling it with tap water before unwrapping the flowers and putting them in.
She turns to him and smiles, watching the way his fingers traced over a new photo attached to her fridge - One she took of Ross and June at the studio. His smile is so big and it makes her heart swell every time she looks at it, only worsened by the way her nephew is looking up at the bassist.
“What’s the plan Macdonald”? She asks, loving the way he blushes slightly and the way he smirks down at her and especially the way he nibbles his bottom lip slightly.
“Well…” he says, turning to her and opening his arms, she steps into them freely, loving the way his large arms wrapped around her frame. She instantly felt safe. She felt at home.
“There's this record shop I wanted to show you” she smiles and nods excitedly “and then I booked a table at this restaurant” he says and her eyebrows raise.
“Aren't I a bit underdressed for that?” She asks, eyes flicking down to her clothes.
“Love you could turn up in a bin bag and still look better than everyone in there” it makes her giggle again which makes him smile widely, pecking her lips briefly.
“Besides…” his hand that's around her waist slips slightly, resting against her hip and squeezing.
“You could be…” his hand slips further, rounding the side of her hip, taking a handful of her arse and squeezing until she's gasping.
“More, underdressed” his words make her cheeks coat a deep red but she doesn't hide from him. Darker eyes boring into hers as he smirks an evil smirk.
“I like these jeans” he says, squeezing her arse again. She wore them on purpose, loving the way they accentuated her bottom. She was glad he liked them too.
“You're going to make it really difficult to leave this house, you know that?” She asks, her hands drifting up to his jumper cladded chest, eyes wandering south from his eyes until they land on his lips.
He leans forward until his lips are barely touching hers as he mumbles a “mhmm”. He's tortuously slow as he presses his lips to hers. Giving her a firm kiss, his tongue only slightly peaking out, grazing her lip before he's suddenly pulling back.
“We should go” he delivers a quick smack to her bum which makes her gasp and then he's gone. Walking to the door and turning to her at the last moment, smirking at her playfully.
“You're mean Macdonald”
“Now you know how I've felt every single day since meeting you”
They walk hand in hand as they walk the streets, searching for the store Ross mentioned. They talk and laugh as they walk and sometimes Ross can't resist the urge to pull her close with an arm around her shoulders and press a kiss to the side of her head, even leaning down and capturing her lips with his occasionally.
They eventually stumble into the record store, Ross shushing Y/n with his lips as she giggles at something he says. It's quaint and quiet, an oldish man rounding the corner with a huge smile on his face when he sees them.
“Ross” the man says, making the bassist step forward to greet the man with his hand still on her waist. Ross extends his hand and they shake hands before the man's eyes are on her.
“You must be Y/n” he says and she smiles and nods.
“I am” she says, looking up at Ross who smiles at her before looking at the man again.
“Ross here talks a lot about you” he says before he slips round the back of the counter. He disappears for a moment.
“Is that so?” she asks the bassist who smirks down at her, rolling his eyes and pinching her hip lightly making her yelp.
“Don’t get cocky” he warns and she almost has to stop herself from falling to her knees.
The man appears again with several records in his hands all of which she recognises immediately. She slips from Ross’ grasp and meets the man at the counter as he places the records in front of her.
“Now these are really special and not for sale unfortunately but Ross here told me you were a big fan so I pulled them out especially for you” he says making her smile. Her eyes flick back to Ross who is already watching her intently, watching the way her face lights up. She turns away from him but her hand reaches out behind her - reaching for him. He comes to stand next to her, his right arm resting around her waist, holding her hip against him.
The man shows her his Fleetwood Mac collection, many of them limited edition vinyl's and even a few test pressings. She's overwhelmed with gratitude, not just for the records, but for the effort Ross put into making this day so special for her. As they browse through the collection, his fingers gently trace patterns on her hip, and she can't help but steal glances at him, realising how lucky she is to have him by her side.
They finish exploring the record store, revelling in their shared joy of music, they leave hand in hand, her bag a few records heavier, their laughter echoing through the quiet streets and Ross can’t help but want to hear nothing but the beautiful symphony he draws from her, forever more. The sun is beginning to set, casting a warm glow of orange and pink over the city. As they approach the restaurant y/n looks up at Ross excitedly.  Inside Ross takes over her coat, his fingers grazing her bare shoulders, setting her skin ablaze.
“Trying to undress me already, Macdonald?” she asks, her voice low, purposefully trying to get him hot under the collar. He coughs lightly, pushing away the lump in his throat and the way his stomach flips. He hands his coats to a waiter who instantly recognises him, leading them to a secluded corner table with flickering candles.
“Do you know everyone?” she asks as he holds out the chair for her, pressing a chaste kiss to her cheek as he tucks her in.
“I’ve got my links” he says into her ear, making her giggle. She takes in the bouquet of pink roses at the centre of the table, the scent of the flowers mingling with the cuisine, creating an intoxicating atmosphere, although they both knew even without them it would be intoxicating. The low thrum of conversation and gentle melodies from the live pianist create a tender atmosphere.
They each pursue the menu, Ross suggesting they share a variety of dishes, talking with the waiter and taking suggestions for the best dishes. She watches as he interacts with the man, confident and sure. She looks at him with her chin placed in the palm of her hand, eyes flicking around all of his features, practically drinking him in.  They begin to share stories about their childhood and their love for music and their friends and everything they can think of, wanting to know every single detail about each other.
The waiter arrives with a bottle of red wine and they clink their glasses together, Ross watching intently as she brings the glass to her lips, obsessed with the way her lipstick leaves a mark on the rim. They savour their meal in contented silence but Ross can't help but gaze at Y/n, truly captivated by her beauty. Between bites, their fingers brush against each other, sparks striking and electricity flowing freely between them. Each graze feels charged with so much more, with longing and desire and love : a magnetic pull which makes it impossible to break away from each other.
The soft glow of candlelight accentuates Ross’ soft browns and she feels the way he gazes at her, in every part of her body, feeling like she’s the only person in the room, the only person on earth.
The night deepens, the sky outside turning dark and stars beginning to show - a rare feat for London. They share a dessert, the sweetness coating their tongues. Ross leans in, his lips grazing her ear as he whispers words that make her heart (and core) flutter.
“Nothing is as sweet as you love” his words are laced with lust and desire, a deep crimson coating her cheeks as she smirks. She brings her spoon up to his mouth, coating his lips with chocolate, closing her mouth around his before he can lick it off.
Everything fades into the background when his tongue grazes hers, they become engrossed in each other, no one and nothing else mattered in that moment. He begins to pull away but her finger hooks underneath his chain, halting his movements as she places one more firm kiss to his lips.
They pull back, Y/n giddily smiling at him, he can't help but tuck his hand into his pocket, pulling out his phone to capture a snap of her. She plucks a rose from the vase in the centre of the table, carefully threading in-between her teeth, smiling. It makes Ross swoon, his stomach dipping and then soaring, she looked completely ethereal. He gently pulls the rose from her teeth, smearing his lips against hers with a hand cradling her jaw, controlling their movements until she's sighing blissfully into his mouth again.
As they leave the restaurant, the night sky twinkles, mimicking the sparkle in their eyes. Ross pulls her close, wrapping her up in his warmth and they stroll through the streets. They make their way back to her apartment, the bassist halting at her bottom step, making her turn to face him with a frown.
“I’m not going to come up tonight love” he says, making her frown deeper, her hands finding the lapels of his jacket, smoothing over the fabric of his chest.
“Okay…” she says, doubt setting in her mind, did he not want her? He silences the doubt in her mind with his next words.
“Trust me I want to…” his hand finds her waist, tugging her until she’s in his arms, lips finding hers in a passionate kiss, his tongue moving against hers and she loves the way he kisses now, sure and determined, moving against hers the way he’s worked out she likes. The way that has her breath accelerating and her hands gripping him tightly.
“You’re making it hard for me” she says against his lips. She smiles when he groans, throwing his head back, forcing their lips apart.
“I want do this properly, take you on another date, be a gentleman” he says, squeezing her waist as he groans again, eyes falling to her lips that are just too tempting “but you make it so hard” his lips are on hers again, hands practically clamping around her waist, lifting her up the steps until he’s pressing her against the door.
“Impressive” she chuckles against his lips, hands threading through his hair. He indulges the both of them for a few minutes before he’s pulling away again, placing his head against her chest as he breathes in and out heavily.
“Okay you should go before I beg you to stay” she says, pressing a kiss to the top of his head. He pulls back to look at her, his right hand resting against her cheek, swiping across the soft flesh gently.
“Now that’s something I’m willing to wait for” there’s a softness to his words, it makes her smile and lean forward for one more, gentle kiss. It’s a brief one, a thank you for a perfect date, a thank you for being so amazing.
“Today was perfect Ross, truly” she says, playing with the chain resting around his neck.
“Good enough to warrant another date?” he asks and she nods as she smiles.
“Definitely”.
He pulls her into a brief hug before he’s pulling away to walk down the steps. She hates the way she instantly feels his absence. He tries so hard not to glance back and he immediately regrets it when he does.
She watches as his eyes darken, the way his eyes fall back to her lips. She doesn’t realise she does it, but when her teeth close around her bottom lip he’s there again, he lunges up the step and he’s pressing his lips back to hers, hands greedily grabbing her waist.
She leans into him, sighing into his mouth as he greedily takes what he wants from her. He pulls away but instantly finds the skin at her neck, tongue gliding across the flesh, teeth biting and grazing and god does it feel good. His lips graze her ear and his movements stop.
“You are the subject of all my deepest desires. I want you, your mind, your soul and body so badly Y/n” his words are hushed and she can’t quite believe they’re coming from him. It was too surreal. She can feel her heartbeat grow erratic just like her breath.
“I’d take you up to that room of yours and make you forget every other man you’ve ever been with… every man you’ve ever wanted… I’d put them to shame I swear Y/n'' she's speechless, back arching into him as pleasure courses through her body. He’s not even doing anything now but his words have her flying. She knows they’re true, if the time he was buried in between her thighs was any indication, he’d be everything.
“I’d make you scream my name so loud until it's the only word you can comprehend” his lips graze her neck again, moving round until they’re back against her lips.
“Ross” she sighs, he pauses his attack against her lips, tongue grazing her lips one last time before he pulls away fully. His hands let go of her waist, grip loosening until they fully disappear.
“I’m not going to do anything to you until I’ve spoken to Matty” the mention of the other man has her mouth flying open, even more speechless before.
He gently closes her mouth with two fingers and he places one more peck to her mouth.
“I want this Y/n, believe me I want this, don’t think I don’t, I know what you’re like, you get in that pretty head of yours and I can’t have you thinking i don't want you in every way possible okay?” he asks and she nods slowly.
“You’re everything I have ever wanted and more” he says smiling down at her, hands smoothing out her hair softly “but I can’t do anything until I speak to Matty, I’ll never forgive myself” it's the first time he’s spoken about Matty as if he wanted her. Of course he did, but Ross usually tiptoed around the subject of his best friend.
“I’m going to go now okay? Don’t get into that pretty head of yours okay?” she doesn't speak but nods, leaning up to kiss him once more before he leaves. She opens her door silently, her back finding the other side before she slides down the wood.
“Jesus christ” she says, running a hand through her hair. That was so hot she couldn't help but think. But also what the fuck? She asks herself.
She draws out her phone from her jacket, opening Matty’s number and typing out a message.
“Fuck you” she types. She can't help but think if Matty wasn’t an issue, she would’ve had Ross in the way she wanted. She quickly deletes the message. Pulling up Ross’ contact instead.
“Thank you for today, it was perfect. Perfect”

The bar is empty, the lights that are usually low are bright and her eyes flick around the room as they practise, noticing things she usually wouldn’t have. The space looks huge without all the people, the stools resting upside down against the tables, the absence of glasses, the smell of smoke and the noise of the people makes it calm. The bar manager was kind enough to let them use the space for free, they usually would’ve met at the studio but Jamie wanted to see them in a live setting (that and she was trying to ignore a certain lead singer).
Jamie is set at the back of the bar, glasses perched at the bridge of his nose as he drinks a dark liquid - likely whisky. He sits with papers covering the table and his phone is flat against the wood, he occasionally picks it up to answer an email or text but his focus is usually on them.
They’ve practised a few songs now and he smiles and nods at her before requesting another one. He had given them free reign of choosing their setlist, the show they had planned an important one. He only makes a few suggestions here and there, mostly here to hear their full repertoire.
“Hey Jamie” she says, she watches as his eyes flick up to her and the way he smiles as he nods. Lots of people didn’t like Jamie, she knew this from being in the fandom for years. But she didn’t receive that side of him, he was always kind to her and treated her with respect - valuing her opinion above all else.
“Can we try something new?” she asks, and he nods again.
“Of course… original or cover?” he asks, his pen resting against his lips.
“Cover” she asks, wondering if that would be a problem, she knew he eventually wanted them to just do originals but for now she thinks he might be fine with it.
“Okay… go for it” he says. Her eyes flick around to the band and they all nod.
They begin playing a familiar tune and it's not long before her voice rings out across the room. He hears the door open slightly and his eyes flick to the noise.
The rain is pouring down outside, hitting the pavement harshly. Matty stands there, wet curls clinging to his forehead and small droplets fall, landing on his cheek and slowly trailing down his face. He looks out at the stage, watching as her eyes flutter shut the minute she begins to sing.
He feels his heart tighten in his chest. He feels a pit at his stomach, recognising the song and wondering who she was singing it for.
“If you, if you could return, Don't let it burn, Don't let it fade, I'm sure I'm not being rude, But it's just your attitude, It's tearing me apart, It's ruining every day” she sings. Jamie beckons him over with a finger to his lips, not wanting to disturb her or the band.
She sounded beautiful, she always did. Jamie was impressed again, wondering if there would ever be a time where he wasn’t. Matty feels his breath getting rapid, she sung this song with such pain, it was hauntingly beautiful. But where was it coming from? Who was it about?
“I swore, I swore I would be true, And honey so did you, So why were you holding her hand?, Is that the way we stand?, Were you lying all the time?, Was it just a game to you?” her eyes open and find him and he half expects her to stop singing and storm off the stage, he expects her to look anywhere but at him. And he hates that she doesn’t.
They hadn’t spoke since he called her that night, but he knew, he knew looking at her now, those eyes that he could stare into for eternity, the way they bore into his soul, they way they look broken but hopeful… he knows he needs her and he knows she needs him just as much.
“But I'm in so deep, You know I'm such a fool for you, You got me wrapped around your finger, Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger?” her voice is beautiful, she’s beautiful. Her eyes soften looking at him and he sees the twitch of her lips, she almost smiles, almost.
Matty can't do this, he can't sit here and pretend anymore. But he can't move now, entranced, enthralled, captivated. Always captivated by her.
“Oh, I thought the world of you, I thought nothing could go wrong, But I was wrong, I was wrong, If you, if you could get by, Trying not to lie, Things wouldn't be so confused, And I wouldn't feel so used, But you always really knew I just want to be with you”  her eyes flutter shut again. Who was she thinking of? Was it him? Was it Ross?
“And I'm in so deep, You know I'm such a fool for you, You got me wrapped around your finger, Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger?” she sings the words again. She pictures him in her mind, she feels horrible, convinced she’s the worst person to ever walk this earth.
The date with Ross was perfect and she knew… she knew she was falling for him, hard and fast the exact way she was terrified off. But he made it so easy. So why was she having these feelings towards his best friend? Why did she want them both so much? And why was she so terrified of losing both of them?
The singer. Why did she know that if she opened her eyes again, he’d be there, so close to slipping from her life?
“And I'm in so deep, You know I'm such a fool for you, You got me wrapped around your finger, Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger?” her eyes open again and find his own immediately.
She looks across his features and she knows. He’s here, but he won't be for long. She knows the furrow of his eyebrows, she knows the lines in between his brows, she knows the way his lip quivers slightly… he couldn't do this anymore. She was losing him.
“You know I'm such a fool for you, You got me wrapped around your finger, Do you have to let it linger? Do you have to, do you have to, do you have to let it linger?”
He watches as the tear falls down her cheek, she quickly wipes it before her fingers are back at her guitar, finishing the song.
He stands abruptly, walking out the venue. The rain soaks him but he doesn’t care, he doesn’t care about anything but her. It's not long before she’s standing with him, drenched, tears falling just as quickly as the rain. He’s facing away from her when she finds him but he quickly turns to face her when he hears his name.
He steps towards her quickly and she throws her arms over his shoulders as his wrap around her waist pulls her towards him.
“I'm sorry” he murmurs against the top of her head. He shakes as he speaks and she wonders if he’s crying. She knows what his words mean. They mean, I'm sorry I'm leaving, they mean I'm sorry you’ve broken me, they’re sorry I love you, they’re sorry you love him more.
She shakes her head against his chest, placing her head there, silently saying “no, don’t leave, don’t give in”. Neither of them speak. The silence is suddenly broken but she doesn't like it when the words that break it are his.
"You said we couldn't because we're working together... You said it wasn't because of Ross, but then I heard you and-" he lets go of her, stepping back and turning around briefly. His hand covers his face, and he sighs heavily against his hand before he’s facing her again. She sees the heartbreak and it hurts her more than anything else ever had. His eyes are red and she sees tears she wishes she never would see.
"Matty I'm so-"
"Don't say you're sorry" he interrupts her and her tears fall faster.
"I thought you'd never lie to me" his words are sad.
"I didn't mean to Matty... I swear... I wanted to tell you…. But" he stops her again, a sharp turn towards her, she takes one look at the angry look on his face and her voice fails her.
"But you what? What's the poor excuse you're going to come up with!" He's shouting now.
"I didn't want to hurt you Matty!" She shouts back, not because she wanted to but because she was afraid he wouldn't listen if she didn't.
"Don't do that! Don't pity me..." Neither of them say it. Neither of them mention that the fact she didn't tell him about Ross was because it was obvious he liked her too.
"You knew I liked you... You knew it.. and you still got with my best mate" it's the first time he's admitting it out loud, and it shakes her to the core.
"Matty please... As soon as I had the slight inclination that you liked me, I tried to put an end to it .. I really did. But Ross..." Her tears fall faster now and she tries to grip onto him, to pull him so he's looking at her, listening to her.
"Ross what? Ross made you?"
"No... I really like him, Matty... I tried to stop it I did but I-"
"you just couldn't" he's facing her now, grabbing her wrist and pulling her closer to him. It's a weird move but she allows him. His fingertips graze her cheek, catching the tears.
"And here I was thinking... Hoping... That you'd like me just a little bit... That you'd choose me over him... But who am I? Who am I compared to Ross? He's my best friend... He deserves you" his words are sad and she frowns up at him, shaking her head.
"Don't say that... You're everything Matty" she truly believes it's why the situation has been so god damn difficult for her.
"Don't say that just to be nice to me..."
"I'm not Matty... You have to know, this hasn't been easy for me. In fact it's been really fucking difficult" she chuckles at herself before her hand clasps his face gently.
"How?" He can't see how it would've been difficult for her.
"Because... I like you too" the confession knocks the breath from him, and her too. It was the first time she had admitted it out loud.
"But you like him more right?" She shakes her head.
"It's not like that...It's- it's both. You're both so different..." She tries her best to explain. She doesn't mention that Ross was real, whilst Matty represented a fantasy, someone who reflected parts of her soul. Whilst Ross was her soul. Ross had her heart, she knew that, and secretly so did he.
“Ross told me you went on a date…” he doesn’t look into her eyes and she doesn’t look into his actively avoiding each other, not wanting to see her reaction, hoping she’d speak and hide her true emotions. His thumb runs along the side of her face, hooking under her chin and raising it until she’s looking into his eyes. She nods.
“How was it?” he asks, eyes silently begging her not to lie. She breathes deeply, she wouldn’t lie, not this time, she couldn’t.
“It was almost perfect” the ‘almost’ accidentally slips and she’s quick to squeeze her eyes shut, wanting to avoid the question she knew he’d ask now.
“Almost?” he says. She nods but doesn’t open her eyes.
“Open your eyes Y/n” he pleads, “please” he knew she wouldn’t tell him what the singular word meant, but they both knew, one look into his eyes and he’d be able to read her like a book. She opens them slowly, finding his glistening brown orbs.
They tell him everything he needs to know. Her eyes don’t hide the secret like she’s trying to. His mind flicks back to the conversation with Ross, he knew what Ross said, that he wouldn’t do anything without Matty’s permission, that he didn’t want to hurt his best friend but that he wanted her more than anything in the world: he wanted her soul and her body and wanted her to be his. Matty didn’t quite believe him when he said it, wondering how well his friend actually managed to resist her. But looking into her eyes now, he knows it's true.
And what hurts more than anything, what completely destroys him, is the fact he can tell she wants Ross just as badly.
"I can't do this," he steps away from her.
"Matty please..."
"no I can't do this y/n... I can't watch you fall in love with my best friend... Who I know is falling just as hard... And he deserves you he truly does... But I can't do that, it will break me"
"Matty please" she begs "I can't lose you..."
"It's not enough... I can't do this" he gestures between them "I just can't, it's too hard"
Right then and there, looking into his sad eyes which are coated with tears, she knows, if she didn't do something, she'd lose him.
"Matty" her voice is the clearest it's been all night and it makes him turn to her again. "I want you to kiss me" she says and his mouth falls open, despite what his brain tells him, that he can't, that it was obvious she was Ross', he steps towards her.
"we can't..." His hand holds her waist as hers fall to his shoulders.
"Please Matty... Kiss me" his eyes search hers, seeing no lie or uncertainty. She wanted this, and so did he. So he slowly lowers his mouth to hers, the initial graze sets her soul ablaze. This one graze redefined everything she ever thought. It was fireworks. It touched part of her soul which she thought was dead. But only part.
It didn't light up all of her, it didn't completely overwhelm her, they didn't merge into one being as they kissed. It was beautiful and loving and it was spectacular... But it wasn't Ross. It could never be Ross. Matty felt it too. He pulls away with a silent sob.
"You're never going to love me like you love him" he murmurs into her mouth. Her tears fall again, sad ones, ones in which tell her and him that he's right.
"I want to .. I can't lose you Matty"
"you won't, losing you would destroy me completely" he presses their lips together again. They move against each other but not easily, it’s the hardest kiss either of them have shared with anyone. Even now, it's full of we-can't, it’s full of we-shouldn’t, it's full of hurt and heartbreak. Her hands grasp his shirt harshly, not wanting him to leave just yet. They needed this, if not only for a moment.
“Matty” she sighs against his mouth. His tongue peaks through his lips and through hers, finding hers and intertwining. He feels a wet tear fall to his cheek but it's not his and he pulls back.
"I'm truly a shitty friend" he thinks.  He didn't deserve her and he most certainly didn't deserve a friend like Ross.
Fuck... Ross they both think they had well truly messed this whole thing up. She pulls away, gasping as the realisation settles in.
"I just kissed Ross' best friend .... Twice" she’s gone before he can stop her. She runs faster than her feet allow, but she still runs.
"Shit. shit!" He shouts.
She doesn’t know where she’s running. But she runs and she doesn’t stop.

Pairing : Matty Healy x afab!reader

Notes: Loved this idea that was requested! also since i’ve never had a child the way she gives labor may be inaccurate, im going off of just the basics lol!
Tumblr media
"Matty where are you" you groan into the phone as another contraction hits you."Hey baby! I'm at the studio, is everything ok?" he asks, "My water broke while i was making lunch" you yell into the phone as you brace yourself for another contraction. Mattys eyes go wide as he hears the news, "Holy shit, okay baby I'll be right there" he says and quickly grabs all his things, before rushing out the door. "Hurry" you shout before hanging up the phone.
Matty swears he's never driven faster, he was surprised no cops had pulled him over during his race home. He quickly parks the car and runs into the house, "Y/N" he shouts, "In here" you yell from the living room. He runs into the room to find you curled up, as much as possible, on the couch. "Hey baby, it's ok, lets get you up and to the hospital ok?" matty says, trying to remain calm for your sake, even though he's internally freaking out.
He helps you carefully sit up from the couch, and guides you to the car, making sure to grab your hospital bag before locking up the house. "I can't believe she's gonna be here soon" you say, as you place your hands on your swollen belly. "I know it's crazy!" matty responds, trying his best to focus on the road.
When you two finally arrive at the hospital, Matty helps you into the reception area and up to the front desk. "Hello, My wife is in labor" he says to the nurse, "Let me go get a wheel chair for her and I'll take you guys up to labor and delivery" the nurse says, quickly hurrying off to get the wheel chair. You squeeze mattys hand tight as you feel another contraction coming on, "Breathe baby its ok" he whispers, trying to soothe you. As soon as the contraction started, it ends and the nurse appears with the wheel chair. Matty helps you sit down, before taking the handles from the nurse and following her as she leads you  to your room.
"I'll give you these to change into, and then a labor and delivery nurse will be right in to set everything up!" the nurse said, as she handed you a hospital gown. "Thank you" you say as you grab the item from her, "Of course! Congratulations you two!" she says, before closing the door behind her. "Do you need any help changing?" Matty offers, "I should be fine, but thank you baby" you say.
After getting changed and being hooked up to about a million different machines, you were finally able to relax a bit, but not too much, as your contractions had been getting worse and worse. "Matty" you whimper, he quickly rushes up to you "Hey baby" he whispers, gently brushing some of your hair from your forehead. "I'm scared" you confess, the idea you were about to push another human out of your body terrified you beyond belief, you weren't sure if you would be able to do it. Mattys face fell when he heard that, "Oh baby" he says, before gently taking your shaking hand in his. "You are the strongest women I've ever met, if anyone can do this its you, and I'll be here the whole time. I can't even imagine what you're going through right now, but just know when everythings done our daughter is going to be here" he says. You tear up at his kind words "I love you matty" you say, "I love you too honey" he responds back, and places a gentle kiss to your forehead.
After about an hour of watching T.V and cuddling with Matty, the doctor told you it was time to push. Your heart sped up as you saw all the nurses walk into the room; it was quite an overwhelming amount of people to have around just for one baby you thought.
"Baby it'll be ok" matty said, trying to calm you down, "How do you know that Matthew? You're not the one pushing a child out of your body!" you snap, the nerves and hormones getting to you. "Ok Y/N you ready?" the doctor said from between your legs. You look between her and Matty, before nodding your head. "Ok on the count of three you're going to push ok?" she said, "1,2,3 PUSH" the doctor yelled. You used every ounce of strength you had in your body to push. "Good just like that, ready to do it again?" the doctor says, once again you push and push and after what feels like hours theres still no baby.
Your eyes well up with tears, utterly exhausted from pushing, you look up at matty "I-i can't do it matty I'm not strong enough " you say as you loosen the grip on his hand. "Baby don't say that, you are incredibly strong, you're so close, she's almost here, remember 5 more minutes of pain for a lifetime of happiness" he says, before placing a kiss on your now sweaty forehead.
You take a deep breathe before signalling to the doctor that you're ready to push again. "Ok Y/N two more pushes then she should be here" your doctor says, before counting down. You use your last remaining energy to push once more, "I see her head, you can do it just one last push" the doctor says. You push again and a few seconds later the loud cries of a baby fill the hospital room. "Baby you did it!" Matty says, as he looks over at you in awe. "Congratulations Mum and Dad you have a beautiful baby girl" the doctor says.
After Matty cuts the embicoal cord and the nurses clean and check the baby, you finally get to do the one thing you've wanted to do for the past 9 months, you get to hold her.
The nurse gently places your blanket wrapped daughter into your arms. You look down at the tiny baby and tears of joy begin to spill from your eyes. "Hey baby" you coo before placing a gentle kiss to her forehead. You look up at your husband, who also has tears streaming down his face, and pat the spot next to you telling him to sit down. He carefully lays next to you in the hospital bed, one arm around your shoulders while the other is around your arm that's holding the baby.
"She's perfect" you whisper, still in awe that your daughter was finally in your arms, "She is" he says. You finally break your gaze away from your daughter, and look up at your husband, "I love you" you say. Matty looks up at you and smiles "I love you too, you're amazing y/n I hope you know that" he says before placing a kiss on your temple.
The baby stirs in your arms and slowly opens her eyes, "Hey baby, its us Mommy and daddy" you coo, as you stroke her small cheek, "We love you so much little one" Matty says, and for a split second you think you see her smile before she closes her eyes once more.
"We never decided on a name" you say, of course you and matty had thought about names but never settled on one. "How about Emma?" he suggests, you look at him then to the baby in your arms, "I like that" you say. "Welcome to the world Emma Healy" you say, before looking back up at your husband. You lean your head against his as both of you silently admire the sleeping baby in your arms.

The Record Shop - Chapter Four
A/N: Sorry for the long wait everybody! Enjoy this chapter, it's significantly less upsetting than chapter three :)
Warnings: Stuff about tattoos and piercings, smut at the end
Tumblr media
*Penny's POV* I told myself that I didn't know why I kissed him. That wasn't true; I knew exactly why. I wanted him. I needed him. Much, much more than I had ever needed Alex. Matty had let me kiss him for a moment, then pulled away and laid a hand on either side of my face, making me look at him. "I need to know you're sure about this, darling." "I am, I am, please let me kiss you," I pleaded with him. "Shhh, pretty girl. You're going through something really tough and I need to know you're not just doing this because you're upset about Alex." "No, please, if anything I got back with him because I was upset about you. I thought you didn't want me anymore, after I saw you with that girl." "She meant nothing, Penny. Nothing, compared to you. I'm sorry."
I kissed him again then, because I couldn't bear to listen to him talk about me like that any more without showing him exactly how I felt in return. I knew as our lips moved together that he wasn't going to be my boyfriend, not yet at least, but at least I had him.
Matty pulled away, breathless. "Let me take you on a date. A real one. Please, my love." “Okay,” I breathed, an inch away from his lips. “Where are we going?” “I don’t know yet, you need to let me think about it.” He kissed me quickly. “I want it to be perfect.” “I’m sure it will be perfect, just me and you,” I said softly into his ear before resting my head on his shoulder. The longer parts of his hair tickled my face slightly as I turned to kiss his neck. “So are we gonna…do this properly then?” Matty asked. He snorted with laughter, before I could answer. “That sounded weird. I mean are we gonna actually have a go at being, like, boyfriend and girlfriend?” He looked a little panicked, so I took one of his hands in mine, playing with the silver ring on his middle finger. “We don’t have to, if you’re not ready. We should probably take it slow, yeah?” Matty looked a lot happier, looking up at me with a grin. "Yeah. Yeah, you're right, babe."
-------------------------
*Matty's POV* I quickly finished serving the customer I was with when I saw Penny come through the door of the shop. I don't think I gave the teenage boy the right amount of change, and I probably should have offered him a bag, but she looked so beautiful that it was as if the world around me had stopped, and the only person moving was Penny. Wavy, dirty blonde tresses falling around her face, the sun making her hair shine. She wasn't wearing anything particularly special; just a pair of black leggings and a grey hoodie with her dirty white converse, but she could have been wearing the world's most expensive gown, and she would've looked equally as beautiful. Her pretty pink lips curled up into a smile when she saw me at the till. I dashed out from behind the counter to hug her, pressing a kiss to the top of her head while she trailed her nails gently up and down my back, face nuzzled into my black t-shirt.
"Well, aren't you two cute," George's voice sounded from behind us. I turned around to look at him, Penny still wrapped in my arms. "Hi, George," she giggled, voice muffled by my chest. "Lock up mate, yeah? I've promised this one a date." I ruffled Penny's hair and kissed her head again when she protested. "Sure," George smiled and started rummaging through a drawer behind the register for his keys. "Have fun, wear a condom!" He joked. I shook my head and turned red, but Penny just threw her head back and laughed, arm slung around my waist as we left the record shop.
Penny tried to reach for my keys from my back pocket, still laughing as we approached my car. "Can I drive?" she raised one eyebrow. "Absolutely not. 'Cause you don't know where we're going." "Tell me then," she pouted. "It's a surprise." I opened the passenger door and she climbed into the car.
-------------------------
The sun was slowly sinking as Penny and I wrapped up our date. I had taken her to a gorgeous forest park and we had talked, and laughed, and walked, and sometimes ran to see who could reach a particular tree the fastest. It may have been June but the air was cold, and I had previously shrugged off my coat and given it to the shivering girl beside me. Her shoes had gotten dirtier, her hair messier, but she looked the happiest I had ever seen her. I extended a hand to her and she took it, swinging our arms together dramatically.
“Having fun?” I asked. “Yes,” Penny laughed breathlessly. “Lots of fun. I don’t want to go home yet.” “Don’t, then. Come back to mine.” My breath hitched in my throat when I asked, knowing there was a possibility she considered that as going too far. But she just smiled, the widest smile I had ever seen, and stopped walking to stand on her tiptoes and kiss my cheek.
————————————
*Penny’s POV*
After a few glasses of wine, Matty had asked me to stay over, saying he didn’t want me trying to make my own way home. We argued briefly about where I would sleep; me insisting I would take the sofa, him begging me to share his bed. Eventually I gave in, knowing the only place I wanted to be was right beside him.
I finished up washing my face in Matty’s bathroom before walking back into the bedroom, which was of course familiar to me. I had slept in his bed once before, and I shuddered at the memory of trying to sneak out of his flat at 6 in the morning, back when I considered him a one night stand, a drunken mistake. God, if I only I knew how wrong I was.
Matty was lying on the bed, his thin sheets draped over his legs. He wore nothing but his black boxers, and had an arm tucked behind his head. “Thank god. You took forever,” he grinned. “Get in here, I’m cold.” “You’re cold because you have no clothes on.” I rolled my eyes but shed my own hoodie and leggings, leaving me in a black sports bra and thong. “Oh, fuck,” Matty groaned. “Are you trying to make me think about the night we met?” I cocked my head innocently. “Hmmm. Not sure what you’re talking about.” “You, me, naked, in this bed. Ring any bells?” “Maybe,” I smirked, sliding under the bedsheets. “Come here, dickhead.” Matty wrapped two strong, ink-covered arms around me and tugged me close to his chest. “Much better,” he mumbled. “Not cold anymore.”
——————————
I woke up when the sun cracked through the curtains in Matty’s bedroom. I could feel his heart beating from the position of my head on his chest, his hand laying on my waist, chin rested on the top of my head. He was waking up too, tightening his arm around me.
"Hey, angel," he whispered, nuzzling his face into the top of my head. "Morning," I yawned. "Fuck, I'm freezing." Matty sat me up gently and leaned over to grab his hoodie off the floor, helping me put it on. I felt surrounded by the scent of his cologne and cigarettes, and I loved it. "You want breakfast?" "Yeah, that'd be nice," I yawned again.
I watched as Matty got out of bed and pulled his grey joggers on, the muscles in his back almost taunting me. I tried not to grin when he caught me staring at him in the mirror, instead pretending to look for my phone. I found it on the bedside table and saw a few texts and missed calls from my mum:
Mum: Hi honey, I saw Alex in Tesco yesterday and he said things hadn't worked out between you two again. Mum: I'm sorry Penny, I really did think you were meant for each other Mum: Please give me a call so we can talk about it
I sighed and put my phone down again. "What's up, darling?" Matty raised an eyebrow. "Just my mum getting way too involved in my personal life again. I swear she loves Alex more than she loves me." Matty's nose scrunched up at the mention of him, and I laughed. "I hate that guy, Pen. And I've never even met him." "Welcome to the club," I sighed again. "Okay, no more talking about him. I have an idea of what we can do today." "What's that love?" "I want to get that tattoo I was talking about, the one on my back. I texted Ross last night and all. He said he'll do it for me today, and he's got an opening for you too if you want it." "This is why I like you, Penny," Matty grinned. "Always up for a bit of fun, aren't you?" He took me hands and pulled me onto my feet, planting a kiss on my lips. "Sounds great, angel. Let's do it."
--------------------
Three hours later, Matty and I walked into Ross's tattoo shop hand in hand. Ross was behind the front desk and he raised an eyebrow with a silent smirk when he saw us.
"Anyone gonna tell me what's going on here?" Matty scoffed, "Grow up, dickhead. If you found a girl this pretty you'd hold her hand everywhere too." "Oh stop, you'll make me blush," I rolled me eyes and propped myself up on my elbows on Ross's desk. "Are you ready for me?" "Absolutely. Head on over to the first station on the right and I'll get set up."
I lay on my stomach while Matty gently rolled up my top to expose the lower part of my back. He sat down beside me in a comfy-looking chair and held my hand tightly. "First tattoo?" Ross asked. I nodded in response. "I'm really nervous actually," I admitted, turning my head to Matty. "How much did your first one hurt?" "I can't really remember darling, I was sixteen and high as a kite," he laughed. "Ross did it for me in the middle of some randomer's house party."
“This is gonna hurt a bit love, so just cling onto Matty, alright?” Ross said while gently wiping my lower back with an antibacterial wipe. “I’m glad you’ve come in, I’ve been excited to give you your first tattoo.” “Thanks Ross, just promise you’ll stop if I need you to?” “Absolutely Penny, are you ready?” I nodded as Ross peeled away the transfer with the base for my tattoo.
——————
A few (excruciating) hours later, Ross wiped down the tattoo one more time before taking a photo and crouching down to my eye level. “There you go, lovely, all done.” "Ross, oh my god! It looks incredible!" I grinned at the three tiny purple butterflies stationed on my lower back. "Matty, isn't it perfect?" "It certainly is, angel." He kissed my forehead quickly and helped me stand up. "You okay?" I nodded and fumbled in my bag for my purse, but Ross quickly shut down that idea. "Definitely not, Penny. Put your money away, please."
After a few minutes of back and forth arguing between Ross and I, Matty rolled his eyes and pulled a few 20 pound notes out of his own pocket, pressing them into Ross's hand. "Just take this, mate. She's not gonna let it go." Before I could argue any more, Matty's eyes lit up. "Here, Penny, before we go, didn't you say something about wanting another ear piercing? Y'know they do that here too?" Ross nodded. "Yeah, Lily does them. You wanna go see her down at the back?"
I approached the pretty blonde woman at the back of the shop and Ross introduced me, telling her I wanted another piercing. She took me into the back room and sat me down, beginning to show me earring choices. "Actually, Lily, I'm looking to get something else pierced today," I blushed slightly. "I just haven't told anyone else that." "Don't you worry, darlin', whatever you want," she beamed.
------------------
"Where's the new ear piercing then?" Ross raised an eyebrow. "Chickened out," I shrugged. Matty laughed and threw an arm around me. "That's alright, angel, you've been through enough pain today. Let's head back, yeah?"
The short drive back to Matty's was almost as painful as the tattoo, between the stinging pain in my chest from my new piercings (being kept a secret until after we were home) and the tension in the car. Five hours in the tattoo shop without so much as one kiss from Matty was the worst part of it all. I knew I was in trouble. He wasn't even mine, we were just having a bit of fun, yet I was completely and utterly addicted to him. I needed him, his touch, his appreciation, more than I needed air to breathe. His hand on my thigh in the car was almost too much to bear, almost, but I managed to hold it together.
The second we got through the door of his flat, his lips were on mine, hands gripping my hips. It wasn't until his hand travelled further up, gently squeezing my breast, that I let out a pained groan. He stopped immediately, eyeing me up and down. "What was that?" "What was what?" I winced, trying but failing to hold it together. "Okay fine, I was gonna keep this as a surprise for later, but it hurts too fucking much," I laughed, rolling my eyes. I grabbed the hem of my top and pulled it over my head, directing Matty's hands to my back. He raised an eyebrow before unclasping my bra and pulling it off my shoulders. His eyes widened when he saw my newly pierced nipples.
"Jesus. Oh fuck." He ran his hands down my bare sides, staring at my chest. "You like it?" I laughed. "Fuck, angel. That's fucking ... you're so fucking hot." I kissed him again, pulling him out of the trance he was in, before he dropped his head down to kiss the skin at the top of my breast, ever so gently. "Does it hurt a lot?" "Yes. A lot, so don't even think about touching them," I groaned. "I can touch you, though." Matty's eyes lit up at my words. "Yeah?" "Yeah," I breathed next to his ear, placing a kiss on his jaw. "Go ahead then, darling."
I dropped to my knees and started to unbuckle his belt, his breathing becoming heavier above me. I pulled his sweats and boxers down together, his length springing out, already hard. "Good to see I have this kind of effect on you," I smirked, taking him into my hand and pumping him slowly, precum leaking out, which I caught on my thumb and spread over his tip. Matty groaned as I took his cock into my mouth and moaned around him. My hands gripped his thighs as I swirled my tongue around him slowly, looking up at him through my lashes. His head was thrown back, leaning against the wall. I barely held in a laugh at the thought of me sucking him off at the front door, unable to even make it to his bedroom.
A moan slipping from Matty's mouth brought me back, and I started to move my head up and down, taking more of him each time until he hit the back of my throat. He started to thrust his hips forward, making me gag slightly, but I didn't care. I wanted him to ruin me.
I could sense he was close, so I pulled away from him and returned my hand to his hard cock, stroking up and down quickly. "Cum for me baby, please, cum in my mouth," I begged, almost cringing at how badly I wanted him.
With one final thrust of his hips, Matty came with a groan. I wrapped my lips around him again just in time to catch every drop on my tongue, showing him cheekily before swallowing. I let him recover for a few minutes before helping him pull his sweats back up.
"Good?" I inquired. "Better than, good, baby. Amazing," he panted, kissing me hard. "You're incredible. Now, it's your turn," he grinned, grabbing my hand and pulling me towards his room, leaving my t-shirt and bra still deserted on the floor.

you bring me home - matty healy
part one

Nothing could have ever prepared Caroline for the world as she knew it suddenly ceasing to exist and being forced to move in with her brother and his best friend. Well maybe saying he forced her was a bit of an exaggeration but George had been very clear that she could join them willingly or he would come and pick her up because he wasn't leaving her to mope and deal with her recent heartbreak all by herself for who knows how long.
Just weeks ago her fiancé, well, she should say ex-fiancé now broke things off with her while they were visiting wedding venues because he claimed he didn't love her anymore. It had been like a sudden rough force hitting her in the stomach. Knees almost crippling underneath her and the bright smile she had been bearing since they arrived vanished within milliseconds. The sharp pain left her gasping for air, at the mercy of the cold man who had so casually ripped her heart out.
Now she was living by herself in their formerly shared apartment. Haunted by memories everywhere she turned. She couldn't sleep in their bedroom anymore, not when she was greeted every morning with the right hand side of the bed empty and untouched. She had boxed up all of the belongings he had left behind once the anger at the situation had passed but she hadn't been able to open it since. And then there was the ring. It felt wrong to keep wearing it when it was a reminder of her farce of a relationship but she still loved it. Mainly because she had picked the ring out herself because he never knew what jewellery to buy her - seriously, Caroline had never worn silver in her life and what did he get her for every anniversary and holiday? The same silver heart necklace.
Glancing out of the apartment window Caroline noticed the raindrops sliding down the glass. How fucking appropriate, she mused. George had rang her earlier to say that he was on the way to pick her up so she found herself waiting eagerly to catch a glimpse of his car. At first she had been hesitant to even accept his offer of moving into the studio for however long they were in lockdown and living with her brother for the first time since they were teenagers. But after spending the past few weeks feeling like a ghost in what was once her home, she desperately needed the change in scenery, and company.
Apparently she had completely missed his car pulling up outside even in her concentrated efforts because a knock rapped against the door. Caroline quickly headed to unlock it and within seconds George was stood before her. "Hey, Caro," George said hugging her tightly "ready for a change of scenery?"
Caroline nodded. "I think I'd go insane if I stayed here any longer G."
"Well," George shot her a grin "I can't promise that you won't go insane living with Matty but it's definitely better than moping in here by yourself."
Matty. That had been the only real reason she had felt so hesitant accepting George's offer. They had never really been close considering their age gap. Caroline had still been in school when the band started to take off and by that point the boys had surpassed the need for family members filling the audience at their gigs. She had met her brother's closest friend a few times over the years, mainly when he would come over to their house to get high with George in his room. Caroline had the biggest crush on him back then, not that she would ever admit it, but she had a suspicion that he knew because of the occasional joke he made when they got older.
She'd played the part of the supportive sister at their early gigs and she made sure to support them by going to whatever shows she could get time off work. George was incredibly talented but there was no denying Matty's charisma on stage. Caroline hated how easily he captured her attention whenever she watched one of their performances. No matter how hard she tried to focus on the whole band, her gaze always wandered back to the one member who'd never really given her the time of day.
Even at 25 she was convinced that he still only saw her as George's kid sister. And she’d accepted that - it was a childhood crush and destined to be nothing more. She was meant to be getting married to another man after all. A man who she had once believed to be the love of her life. However, she supposed it was true what they said about your first love because she’d never forgotten about it. If you could even call unrequited infatuation fuelled by adolescent pining a first love.
"I dealt with both of you growing up," Caroline deadpanned "I think I can handle it just fine."
George feigned offence momentarily but he knew it wasn't an argument he was ever going to win if he let Caroline get started. Similarly to Matty she could talk for England - the only difference being she had some self control and it mainly showed when she was really passionate about something, whereas Matty just never shut up.
With that Caroline had handed her bags to a reluctant George and she left the apartment without a second glance. Deep down she was tempted to take a minute to remember the place which for the last five years of her life she had called home but everything about it was as tainted as the wilting roses forever frozen in time that she didn't have the heart to replace.
George loaded her bags into the back of his car when they reached it before turning to Caroline with a teasing grin "do you want to drive?"
"Do you have a death wish?" she beamed back at him "because if you do I'm more than happy to assist."
Caroline's relationship with driving had always been a constant source of entertainment for her brother. Even after he moved out, it still never failed to bring him some amusement. She was an absolute menace on the roads and had failed her driving test an impressive ten times before deciding that maybe she just wasn't meant to drive. Initially George had been the one forced to take her driving to appease their parents but he quickly grew bored of attempting to teach his sister who he claimed was hopeless (and maybe he was right but that wasn't the point.) He ended up pawning her off to Hann because he was the most sensible one and Ross would just encourage her chaotic tendencies on the road and Matty wasn't much better himself.
He gestured to the passenger seat in the car and Caroline took the hint. She climbed into the car, her emotions swirling within her, yet finding comfort in her brother's presence. George settled into the driver's seat beside her, his strong hands gripping the steering wheel with determination. "Ready passenger princess?"
"Look G," Caroline smirked "some people were meant to drive and the rest of us were born to be driven everywhere .
As the engine roared to life, Caroline quicky seized control of the aux. Moving slowly at first as they pulled away from her now old apartment building, before picking up speed as they left the city behind. Caroline watched the scenery pass by a blur of buildings and streets transforming into sprawling landscapes.
Throughout the drive Caroline noticed George glancing over at her whenever he thought she wasn't aware of it. As overbearing as his protective brother act could be sometimes she found herself especially grateful for it this time.  Their shared silence spoke volumes and their unspoken bond conveyed all the comfort and understanding in the world.
"Matty's already here, by the way," George informed her as they approached the secluded studio.
That was all Caroline really took in. For the remainder of the journey she felt like she was just an autopilot. Like she was just a shell in place of a human. Then before she knew it George brought the car to a complete stop and parked it right in front of the studio. She later eyes on Matty instantly although not intentionally, he just so happened to be caught in her direct line of vision immediately after she hoped out of the car. He looked good. Happier than she’d seen him in years.
When their gazes locked for the first time in a year Caroline was slightly intimidated by the intensity of Matty’s stare but it melted away and reformed into the familiar teasing smile she had come to associate with Matty. She desperately to part her lips and speak but something was stopping her. It was unlike Matty to hold back like this as well and Caroline didn’t know what to make of this sudden reserved demeanour to him. They were at a standstill with George completely unaware of their staring match as he unloaded both of their bags from the back of his car. Caroline felt as though her throat was stuck and all the witty comments she’d been calculating in the back of her mind were suddenly wiped from her memory.
Despite having the ability to hear Matty’s voice at anytime through his music and interviews, Caroline was ever grateful that she’d been blessed with the opportunity to hear it in person. Yet even after being so sure she could resist the almost magnetic pull Matty’s voice had on her, any hope of finally being free of that childhood crush she’d never been able to let go of quickly diminished the second those words fell from Matty’s lips.
They fell like soft, music notes. A mixture of quavers, minims and crotchets perfectly arranged to enthrall her and leave her practically speechless at the beautiful melody they created that was Matty’s voice. And Caroline’s heartbeat? In that moment it mimicked a crescendo like no other. One that would put all of the greatest musicians and composers to shame.
Matty’s surprisingly veiny and dexterous hand filled her vision pulling her abruptly out of her quiet admiration as he notably leaned against the doorframe. “Well, well, well, look who's finally here. The famous Caroline Daniel graces us with her presence."
Caroline felt her cheeks turning a shade of pink so she tried to brush it off by playfully rolled her eyes in an effort to compose herself. “If anyone’s famous here darling we both know it’s not me,” Caroline grinned “I’m just here because George didn’t want me to have a mental breakdown by myself.”
Matty chuckled his voice laced with a hint of mischief “Say the word love and I’ll join you…” before his tone turned more genuine “for what it’s worth, I've missed having you around."
She wanted to make a stinging comment about that being a first. Or about him finally properly acknowledging and taking to her for the first time in years. But she held back. If they were going to be living together with only George as a mediator she didn’t want to purposefully instigate things. Besides, she was just here so she didn’t have to wallow in her misery alone. Not even the presence of the only guy she’d never really gotten over could throw a wrench in that, right?

So this is how it starts - Chapter 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: Matty x original female character Warnings: drinking, smoking, swearing; mentions of: misoginy, cancer (in the past), infertility Disclaimer: some of what the ofc is experiencing is rooted in my lived reality, however I lie for plot purposes a lot. I draw inspiration from things that I read somewhere or that actually happened to me or my friends. It's not proof read and English is my second language so there's either too many commas or not enough commas.
The line connects.
"Hey, are you still at the restaurant?"
"Yes, we just ordered. Is your date already over??" Carly is on the other line.
I let out a breath "yes..." I'm a tad annoyed.
"That bad?"
"Worse"
"Come over, I'll text you the address, then you can have a few drinks with me and the boys and tell the whole story"
"Fuck, are the boys there as well? I really don't want to ruin your guys' night with my moping"
"you're not allowed to mope, just recount the story of your horrible date in great detail, maybe someone will offer to break his legs or something and we'll all laugh about it. Ross' girl and Charlie are here as well. I'm sure nobody will mind, right?" Carly raises her voice a bit as to ask her company rather than me and adds "See, no objections."
We hang up, my phone chimes with the address of a restaurant in Soho and I'm on my way. Great, now I have time to overthink. Until a few minutes ago I was under the impression that Carly was offering me to crash the end of her date night with Adam. The thought of having to socialize with a whole group of people makes me slightly nervous.
When I arrive I spot the group at the back of the restaurant. The fact that there's an empty chair right next to Carly reserved for me doesn't go unnoticed and I make my way over there.
"Hi everybodyyyyyyy, I'm Hannah" I awkwardly greet the group. I don't know why I find it awkward. Sure, I'm friends with Carly (and Adam for that matter), I have met the rest of them at some point or another, and on the few occasions I met Adam's bandmates they've been nothing but nice and welcoming. I'm greeted with a round of smiley hello's, Carly is the only one who gets up to hug me and I'm grateful for that. I can really use the hug but I'm happy the rest stay seated and don't make a massive commotion. I plop down on the chair next to me and let out a breath. What a fucking nightmare of an evening.
It doesn't take long for a waitress to arrive. "Can I get you anything to drink?"
"Yes, I don't know..." I'm momentarily overwhelmed and kind of tired. I look around at what the others are having and just choose the first thing I see "I'll have a glass of wine just like that one, thanks". The waitress nods and leaves.
"Ah, the Malbec, good choice" the man I know to be Matty comments. I laugh and shrug. I have met him a few times, once at Carly and Adam's wedding, a few times when I was visiting baby Hann but I never really had a full conversation with him. I know he's fun, I know he's a bit weird in a good way, I know he's been to rehab and I know he travels a lot.
"I know shit all about wine so I hope you don't let me down!" I jokingly reply before Carly interrupts.
"So tell me everything. Why is this date over after just an hour?"
"Urghh I had to leave before the main course arrived because that guy was being outright rude and disrespectful. I'm never doing online dating ever again! He seemed so nice in his profile but the real him was a total let-down. I mean, at the beginning the conversation was okay-ish, first date-ish, smalltalk, you know? But then after we ordered our food he asked me: 'so how many kids do you want to have?'" I try to imitate a typical gym-bro while saying that "Like, not *if* I want to have children, no, he asks *how many* as if it's out of the question that I want to have kids. Well, I then told him that I can't have kids because of the whole cancer situation and do you know what he says???" anger is rising in my chest and I'm probably talking too loud but I don't care. "He just asks me 'Well then why are you dating men?' and I'm just sitting there like..." I'm temporarily out of words.
"Oh wow, are you serious? What an absolute asshole!" it's the reaction I expected from Carly but to my surprise it's Matty who chimes in.
"Right?!?" I reply.
"As if the only reason to seek human connection is to reproduce." he scoffs
"EXACTLY?! He then continued to tell me that he's a 'high value man' - whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean- and that he has to spread his DNA or some bullshit and that if I don't plan on having kids I shouldn't try to snatch a fertile man off the market or some shit. The whole experience was uncomfortable, misogynistic and probably homophobic"
"Fucking hell, I'm sorry you had to go through that" I just look at him and bam, I'm in love. Wait, no, I'm not in love with Matty, I'm just impressed by his emotional intelligence that I'm not used to in men. At least that's what I tell myself.
The waiter appears with my glass of red wine and I take a huge gulp. I don't really want to process what's happening right now.
"Yeah, dating in your 30ies isn't fun. I'm probably gonna die alone. And I'd actually hugely prefer dying alone to spending my time with an idiot like that." I continue. That earns me a light chuckle from Matty and a stern "you're not going to die alone! I won't let you!" from Carly.
The wine in combination with no dinner goes straight into my bloodstream and takes some of the anger and agitation away. I'm calming down and I find myself enjoying the company. The conversations flow easily.
"Right, smoke break. Anyone?" Matty asks the group around the table.
"I'm still good, mate, nobody can smoke as much as you" George laughs and nobody seems in the mood for a cigarette.
He gets up and I suddenly decide that I do indeed need a smoke break. Do I smoke? no. Do I want to stand in the slightly chilly evening air and watch a handsome stranger give himself lung cancer? absolutely yes.
"I'll join you!" I grab my coat and follow him out of the restaurant.
In front of the restaurant he fishes a pack of cigarettes and a lighter out of his coat pocket. He takes one out and goes on to offer me one. I wave my hand in decline and add "thanks, I don't actually smoke". He looks at me confused, almost offended and then just chuckles.
He lights the cigarette "why did you join me for a smoke if you don't actually smoke?"
"I just felt like I needed some fresh air"
"If you want some time alone with me, you could just ask me on a date, you know?"
"haha, very funny" I retort
"I think it's kind of cool that you came here, and that you're angry at that twat and not yourself"
"What d'you mean by that?" is what I say and internally I'm like what a weird fucking thing to say.
"I don't know how to explain that but often people go on a shitty date and afterwards think there's something wrong with *them* and not with the other person who was being a dick. It's kind of cool that you're kind of pissed at that asshole and not drowning in self pity"
"Rrrright. Thanks, I guess?" I laugh and he starts laughing as well.
"Sorry I sometimes have thoughts that make total sense in my head and when I try to say them out loud I sound like a total loser."
"Don't worry, I get it!"
We stand in silence for a few moments after that. I enjoy the fresh air which just emphasizes the buzz from the wine. I feel warm in my coat and relaxed.
"So what's the cancer situation?" he asks
"'xcuse me, the what?" I'm a bit confused
"You said earlier that you were unable to have kids because of 'the cancer situation'" he makes air quotes with the cigarette between his fingers and I can't help but find that really cool. "but I just realized it's not really any of my business, I'm just curious, you obviously don't have to tell me"
"Oh... Oh yeah, I had ovarian cancer when I was 14, they had to take everything out. Turns out that I have a gene mutation thing that had me at a very high risk of getting breast cancer, so I got a preventative boob job out of that as well"
He looks at me for a few seconds and then just drily says "Oh fuck!"
That's a new reaction, it's refreshing. Usually the reaction I get from people is pity, which I hate because I don't really mind my situation. I'm fine. I‘m healthy, I have a good job, great friends, fun hobbies and most importantly: I'm alive!
I'm a bit tipsy, my mood has significantly improved and so I add "I mean I'm happy the doctors were brave enough to do all that because as I learned today I have a lot less value as a woman if I can't produce babies" I roll my eyes and chuckle. He smiles but apparently doesn't find me particularly funny in this moment.
"I hope you don't really believe that"
"Of course I don't actually believe that. I was trying to make a joke. But I guess I don't have to tell you about jokes that don't land, Mr. Meta"
"Mr. Meta, oooooh I like that nickname, please never use it again" he laughes and infectious.
I love this. I find myself craving... him. I wonder how warm his hugs feel but before I can get lost in that train of thought he stubs out his cigarette and holds the door open for me.
The rest of the evening is spent getting to know everybody a bit better, getting even tipsier and hearing funny stories from the band's latest leg of the tour. After the bill is paid and everybody makes their way out of the restaurant the group gathers on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant to say their goodbyes. I hug Carly and Adam, enthusiastically wave to the rest. Before I have a chance to turn around and be on my marry way, Matty asks "Which way are you going?"
"Just down the street to the tube station"
"Mind if I walk with you? I'm headed roughly in the same direction"
He seems like a guy who has the funds to take a cab but I guess he's a grown man who can make his own decisions, so I just say "sure" and can't help but smile.
We say goodbye to the group and head towards the tube station.
