Time for a story - Shady Intentions
Tumblr media
Shifting Addie’s weight on his arm a little, Oliver dipped the spoon into the tomato sauce and tasted it. It was great already, but it took a little more to be perfect, and Oliver always aimed for perfect when it came to cooking.
“Addie, do you want to taste the-“
Addie released a low whine. Her hands tightened in the fabric of his shirt, holding onto him even more tightly. She turned her head, pressing her face against the side of his neck. Her forehead was still so very warm that Oliver wasn’t surprised that she didn’t even want to taste the sauce he had made for the wraps.
“It’s okay,” he whispered, rubbing his hand over her back, “you don’t have to.”
Adding some more oregano and basil, Oliver swayed from side to side slowly. He hoped it would be enough to comfort Addie at least a little.
Oliver had just fallen asleep after a long night out in the streets when Addie had started crying. He had gone to her nursery, thinking that she just needed another goodnight kiss. Even with the dimmed light Addie always slept with, he had immediately seen that he had been wrong. She had been pale, her cheeks flushed red though. She had cried actual tears because she had felt so bad, so he had taken her with him to bed where she had fallen asleep between Felicity and him.
When his alarm had went off this morning, Addie still hadn’t felt much better. Although they had Raisa, who was the best at taking care of sick kids, Oliver and Felicity always made sure one of them was home when one of the kids was sick. It was one of the many rules they had agreed on when Oliver had left the life as a stay-at-home dad to become the mayor. That was why Oliver had canceled all appointments for the morning, while Felicity had taken off the afternoon. She would take over here in the next fifteen minutes.
“Do you want me to take over?”
Shooting a look back over his shoulder, Oliver watched Raisa coming in. She was smiling softly, cocking her head.
“I have everything under control,” he replied, “but thanks.”
With a low sigh, Raisa sat down at the kitchen island, shaking his head. In the reflection of the glossy fronts of the cupboard Oliver could see the way she looked at him with a quiet smile that was full of pride. It didn’t matter how many times Raisa had already told him that she was proud of him and the person he had become, it still touched him in the best way possible whenever she looked at him like that.
Raisa was that one person who knew him longer than anyone else who was still alive. He had had a meaningful part in raising her. During his troublesome youth, she had been there to offer a lot of advice. He had barely followed it at that time, but he often remembered her words now.
“One day, I will lose my job.” Raisa chuckled softly. “You and Felicity handle things to well here that soon you won’t need me anymore. When Addie goes to school-“
“When Addie goes to school,” Oliver said pointed, switching off the hotplate and pushing the pot off it, before he turned around to Raisa, “you will still be family, so I will make sure that you won’t leave until you don’t want to stay with us any longer.”
Raisa smiled at him, obviously touched by his words. Oliver knew that Raisa considered him and his family to be her family too. She had been with the Queens for so long. His parents might not have done everything right, but he hoped that they had been good employers to her. When Felicity had reached out to Raisa eventually, asking her to come back, she hadn’t had that same luck. It had only prompted him to realize even more how much Raisa had always been part of his family.
Oliver wanted to tell her once more, but he got distracted by Hawk. They young Bernese Mountain Dog had been lying curled up next to the kitchen counter so far, hoping Oliver would drop some of the food for him to catch. He had suddenly raised his head though. With his ears turned forward and his eyes directed towards the door, he took in his surroundings now.
“Hawk,” Oliver whispered to the dog, who looked at him immediately, waggling his tail excitedly, “who’s there?”
Immediately, Hawk jumped up. He barked loudly as he ran out of the kitchen and towards the front door. It was his usual reaction when a family member came home and, with a glance at his watch, Oliver figured that he had already heard Emmy’s bus arriving.
“Addie, Emmy’s com-“
Smiling, Oliver realized that Addie had finally fallen asleep. He was sure that it wouldn’t take long for her to wake up again because sick kids rarely got the sleep they needed to recover. That was why it was even more important to make sure those short moments of sleep were used for their best.
“Raisa, can you put Addie to bed?”
“Of course.” Raisa took Addie from him, making sure the toddler was safe and warm in her arms. “I will stay upstairs with her for a while, so she won’t wake up.”
“Thank you, Raisa.”
While Raisa went upstairs, Oliver joined Hawk, who was already jumping up and down at the door. He was probably more than excited that Emmy was home this early. Usually, Emmy would only return later, but thanks to some school staff meeting or something she would come home early all week.
As soon as Oliver put his hand to the door handle, Hawk sat down. He was still nervous from excitement. His entire body was shaking from how hard he tried to sit still. His gaze switched back and forth between Oliver and Emmy, who was walking up the driveway.
“Go.”
The command was unnecessary. The moment Oliver opened the door, Hawk ran outside and right towards Emmy. There had been times when Oliver’s heart would have started racing at how Hawk didn’t seem like he wanted to hit the brakes. By now, he knew that Hawk wouldn’t run into Emmy though. Just like he always did, Hawk ran around Emmy a couple of times until he was focused enough to step towards her and lick her face.
“The best welcome ever.”
Oliver puckered his lips, watching Emmy from his spot in the frame of the door. He narrowed his eyes at her teasingly, and it had exactly the result he had hoped for.
“Right after yours, Dad.”
Dad. Oliver still wasn’t used to being called that. For years, he had been daddy or dada to all of his children but William. His kids were just growing up way too quickly for his liking. If it was up to him, they could just stay babies or at least toddlers forever.
“Saved by the last second.”
As soon as Emmy was in reach, Oliver grabbed her by her upper arms and lifted her, so her face was on the same level as his. Emmy smiled amusedly, and Oliver felt that smile tugging at his heartstrings. As much as Emmy thought that she was a big girl now, for him, she was still his little baby girl. He acknowledged that thought with a kiss to both of her cheeks before he let her back down on the floor.
Hawk started dancing around her again, pushing her into the house with it. He waggled his tail and barked, while he used every moment of focus to lick her face.
Oliver followed them inside. He knew how much Emmy loved to help in the kitchen, especially when there was something for her to nosh on. Thanks to his good influence, all the kids loved noshing on vegetables when he was cooking. He was about to suggest that she could help him finishing the wraps when he noticed the single pink rose in Emmy’s hand.
“Emmy.” Frowning, he put his hands to his hips and nodded towards the flower. “What do you have there?”
“It’s a rose,” Emmy stated the obvious, “a pink one, my very favorite.”
“I know.” Oliver tapped the tip of his finger against the tip of Emmy’s nose. “But where did you get that from?”
“Jacob, a boy in my class, got it for me.”
All of the little alarm bells that had grown in him when he had known that he would become a father for the first time and that had only multiplied with each kid, especially with each daughter, started ringing. When his daughter got a flower from a boy in her class that could not mean anything good.
In the back of his mind, Oliver knew that his reaction was unnecessary and certainly uncalled for. Emmy would just roll her eyes and say Dad in this weird tone of voice and with that long stretch of the vocal that she had definitely adapted from that new TV show she loved to watch. Jacob was probably no real danger to Emmy’s safety either. Oliver knew that one of the few things worse than broken bones was a broken heart, and he wanted to keep his kids away from that for as long as he could.
“So, Jacob got you a flower? Your favorite flower to be exact.”
“That’s what I just told you, Dad.”
Oliver nodded his head slowly, still trying to process this. He tried to remember what he had been like when he had been eight years old, but he couldn’t remember. What he did remember was how he had been when he had been a teenager. He was more than relieved that at least that was still a few years ahead of him.
“Why did he bring you a flower?”
Emmy shrugged her shoulders. “He said he walks by a flower shop on his way to school every morning. He thought about me and got me one. Can Jacob come over tomorrow, Dad?”
No, Oliver thought to himself, he was absolutely not going to invite a boy over who would try to steal his daughter’s attention from him. It had already been hard enough to fight Hawk for the kids’ attention.
Luckily, Oliver didn’t have to answer yet because Hawk suddenly came running back from the kitchen. Just like before when he had heard Emmy’s bus, he was jumping up and down at the door. Barking and waggling his tail, he showed his excitement as Felicity was walking over from the garage.
“Hi, Hawk.” Felicity chuckled when Hawk jumped up at her, but she pushed him back to the floor nonetheless. “I am very happy to see you too, but you know you are not allowed to jump.”
Hawk released a slightly grumpy sound, but he started snuggling around Felicity’s legs like a cat immediately. He walked around them in eight-turns, almost causing Felicity to lose her balance. She managed to keep her balance though, moving her hands through Hawk’s fur.
“Now, what’s going on here?” she asked Oliver and Emmy, looking back and forth between them. “Why are you standing in the foyer?”
“Dad asked me about the flower,” Emmy said. “Jacob got it for me. Can I bring him home after school tomorrow?”
“Sure,” Felicity replied immediately, causing Oliver to shoot her a glare, “you can always bring your friends. Besides, only the best of guys get a girl flower.”
“Cool. Thanks, Mom.”
“Nothing to thank me for.” Felicity brushed her fingertips against the flower. “You should get a vase from the kitchen to keep the flower hydrated. Do you know where to find a vase?”
Emmy nodded her head. “Come on, Hawk, you can help me pick one.”
Although Oliver doubted that Hawk had much to say about the vase, he followed Emmy into the kitchen nonetheless. He probably hoped that he finally got to try some of the food Oliver had prepared for the wraps. Since the kids could barely withstand Hawk’s puppy eyes that never failed to show how hungry he really was, Oliver didn’t doubt that he would be successful now.
Oliver waited until they had disappeared in the kitchen before he turned to Felicity. From the way she looked at him, a slightly amused smile tugging at the corners of her lips, she already knew that Emmy talking about boys did not sit well with him.
“Do you think that’s a good idea?” He cleared his voice, trying to sound less concerned. “We don’t know that Jacob-guy.”
Felicity cocked her head. “Do you want me to run a security check on him?”
“You’re not taking me seriously.”
Oliver’s complain was only half-hearted because he already knew that Felicity had the better arguments on her side. Jacob was an eight-year-old kid. What serious danger could be coming from that?
“Oh, I am always taking you seriously.”
Felicity stepped towards him, putting her hands to his shoulders. Her fingers moved along the collar of his shirt for a moment before they lowered to the front of his shirt and stroked over the firm muscles there. Oliver felt himself relax, unable not to so when she touched him like that. If the way Felicity smiled was any indication, it didn’t go unnoticed by her.
Straightening up onto the tips of her toes, she brought her lips impossibly close to his. He could almost taste her on his lips already. The anticipation of kissing her made it hard to focus on anything else, especially on his point in this conversation.
With a deep sigh, Oliver admitted defeat. His arms wrapped around Felicity’s waist, holding her tightly. His lips met hers in a gentle kiss.
When Felicity pulled back, she looked at him with perked up eyebrows. She didn’t have to say the question out loud for him to know that she wanted to know if everything was okay. Although he wasn’t sure if that was really true, he nodded his head. Since Felicity brushed a soft kiss against his lips in a sign of gratefulness, it was worth it either way.
Clearing his throat, Oliver decided that it was time to change the subject.
“Did you have time to analyze the blood from the crime scene I brought tonight?”
“The best of guys bring their love ones flowers. Mine usually brings me blood from crime scenes, but we are just playing in an entirely different league.”
Felicity chuckled, kissing the edge of his jaw. Oliver felt his heart flutter in response. She was right. They were playing in an entirely different league because their love was more than most people would ever experience in their lives. They had something special.
“No, not yet,” Felicity added eventually, “I will go upstairs into my office when Emmy has had lunch.”
Oliver nodded. “Okay. I have to go to City Hall now.”
“Good. I will call you if I find out anything. How’s Addie?”
“Not good.” Oliver sighed, grabbing the jacket of his suit and putting it on. “Raisa’s upstairs with her. I will take the day off tomorrow, so I can be here for her.
“We can part the day again and-“
“No,” Oliver said quickly, maybe a beat too quickly, “I’ll do that.
→ → → → →
With his arms crossed in front of his chest, Oliver took Jacob in thoroughly. The young boy was a little smaller than Emmy. With his dark hair and his green eyes, he was certainly going to be a heartbreaker. For now, the plaid shirt and the thick sweater west were making sure that it wasn’t happening yet.
“Emmy,” Oliver said causally, not looking away from Jacob, “why don’t you give Hawk some treats? He was a good boy this morning.”
“Okay.”
Emmy didn’t even question Oliver’s request because she just loved to give Hawk some treats. That was why she just hurried into the kitchen, Hawk following her closely.
Oliver waited until he was sure that Emmy was out of reach before he took a step towards Jacob. The boy didn’t seem frightened, luckily, but he did look uncomfortable. Since Oliver, despite all his attempts years ago, had a heart, he flashed Jacob a smile, trying to look even less intimidating.
“So, Jacob,” Oliver said, his voice as soft as it was when he talked to his own kids, “what exactly are your intentions with Emmy?”
Jacob looked at him like he had just suggested eating spiders while they were still living. He scrunched up his nose and frowned.
“I’m only eight.”
Oliver felt the corners of his lips tugging into a small smile as Jacob was right. At the age of eight, boy probably didn’t have any further intentions. It was something to be relieved about and maybe all Oliver had really needed to hear.
“I like Emmeline,” Jacob said all of a sudden, shrugging his shoulders, “I want her to be happy because I like the way she laughs.”
That managed to warm Oliver’s heart completely. He knew that Emmy was way too young for her first real love, but she was old enough for her first crush Oliver guessed. He wasn’t yet sure if it was going to be Jacob, but Oliver knew he could feel safe if it turned out to be him. Jacob, just like Felicity had thought, really seemed to be the best of guys.
There were a lot of things boys could find attractive in a girl. If it was the smile, that always seemed to be a good sign. If you were attracted to a smile, you were attracted to happiness. If that wasn’t something Oliver would want for his children, what else could he wish for?
“Dad?” Emmy called from the kitchen, breaking the tensed silence between Oliver and Jacob. “Who are these flowers from?”
Oliver didn’t need to see them to know that Emmy was referring to the bouquet of white lilies on the kitchen counter. Those were the only flowers there.
“I bought them for mommy, so she can’t say I never bring her flowers.”
Of course Oliver knew that Felicity would never say anything like that. Like she had phrased it yesterday, they were playing in an entirely different kind of league. They didn’t need flowers to prove their love to each other. What they had was more than that, and Oliver could only hope that his kids found the same one day far in their futures.
“Now, come on in, Jacob,” Oliver asked the boy, smiling at him, “lunch is already prepared.”

BBQ Pizza Stuffed Mushrooms
Don't they look gorgeous? These little beauties are grilled, stuffed mushrooms. You're going to love them. They're juicy and full of flavour, a little bit of heaven for mushroom-lovers.
Each mushroom is fully pizza stuffed and cooked on the BBQ (or in the oven) until succulent, a little smoky and ready to be eaten while warm and melty with groans of pleasure.
I don't exaggerate! They are totally lush.
M&S Inspire Me
I created these stuffed mushrooms for the M&S Style & Living page which they call Inspire Me. I'm proud to have been asked for a second time to contribute to their lifestyle pages.
The first time I was published in their lifestyle section was an article on how to Pack the Perfect Picnic where I shared tips and recipes for sandwich and fruit skewers, mini cheese and bean parcels (I shared a variation of them - mini spinach and cream cheese parcels here on Tinned Tomatoes) and mini no-bake strawberry cheesecakes.
This time they wanted me to create recipes and ideas on How to Host a Meat-Free Barbecue that was veggielious with lots of vegetable inspiration.
As well as the pizza stuffed mushrooms, I created three pimped veggie hot dog recipes and tandoori sweet potatoes.
You'll definitely get your five-a-day at this BBQ.

VEGGIE HOT DOGS
I used M&S butternut squash and paprika sausages and posh dog rolls to create three exciting hot dog stacks.
The Blue Cheese Chipotle Dog
“Blue cheese, a dollop of chipotle-spiked mayo (recipe on M&S website) and sweet caramelised onions: this is definitely one for the grown-ups”
The New York Deli Dog
“This is inspired by the flavours of a New York deli – cream cheese and pickles. Any leftover pickled onions (recipe for quick red pickled onions on the M&S website) are fabulous on sandwiches or burgers”
The Mexican Dog
“Stacked high with fresh tomato salsa (recipe on M&S website), sweetcorn, crumbled feta and coriander, these colourful hot dogs are a taste of Mexico”

TANDOORI SWEET POTATOES
“These thick slices of sweet potatoes in a fiery tandoori marinade become wonderfully charred and crispy on the grill”
I love sweet potatoes, so I couldn't resist adding them to my veggie BBQ. Pre-cooked  sweet potatoes (the night before), sliced, coated in tandoori paste and grilled, then served with a lemon mayonnaise and slices of lemon to squeezes over the spicy potato slices.

BBQ Pizza Stuffed Mushrooms
Back to the mushrooms.
I removed the stalks from some large flat mushrooms, brushed them with a little oil, seasoned them with black pepper, then filled them with M&S Vine Ripened Tomato Paste (which is tastier than standard tomato paste or puree as it includes garlic and seasoning),  slices of mozzarella (you can use vegan mozzarella or vegan cream cheese, which also works well), slices of cherry tomato. Finish off with a sprinkle of dried oregano, salt and pepper, before grilling them on a hot BBQ or in the oven until they are cooked through and the cheese and sauce are all oozy.
How to serve stuffed mushrooms
I would serve these stuffed mushrooms with potatoes wedges and a green salad if I was serving them up as a main course, but at a BBQ they would be plated up alongside, vegetable kebabs, salads and hot dogs for my friends and family to help themselves. Either way they are a winner!

BBQ Pizza Stuffed Mushrooms
The oozy cheese and tomato filling for these smokey, succulent grilled mushrooms is inspired by pizza toppings. These stuffed mushrooms can be served vegetarian and vegan depending on which cheese you use. Cook on the BBQ or in the oven.
prep time: cook time: total time:
ingredients
8 Portobello mushrooms (or other large flat mushrooms)
1 tbsp olive oil
200g M&S vine-ripened tomato paste (or pizza sauce)
240g ball of mozzarella, cut into 8 slices (or vegan mozzarella/cream cheese)
8 cherry tomatoes, sliced
1 tsp dried oregano
a good grinding of salt and pepper
a few fresh basil leaves to serve
instructions
Carefully peel the skin off the mushrooms and remove the stalk.
Brush the outside of the mushrooms with a little oil.
Add a heaped tablespoon of paste to each mushroom and spread across the inside with a teaspoon.
Cut the mozzarella (or vegan mozzarella) into 8 slices and place one slice in each mushroom.
Slice each cherry tomato into 3 slices and top each mushroom with 3 slices.
Sprinkle each mushroom with a little oregano and a grinding of salt and black pepper.
Place the mushrooms on a pre-heated BBQ, directing onto the cooking grate and cook until the mushrooms are juicy and tender and the mozzarella has melted. Depending on the heat, this will take 5-10 minutes.
Serve and Enjoy!
NOTES:
Serve as a BBQ side or as a main course with spicy potato wedges and a dressed green salad. These can also be cooked on a baking tray in a hot oven for 15-20 minutes. Calories and nutrients are for one portion which is 2 stuffed mushrooms
