I was genuinely terrfied when I read that something like that exists. I mean I think this is legitimate proof that Larry were closeted against their will contractually, what do you think?

Also you said that if they did anything unsavory, their contract would be declared null and void, right? But why is that a bad thing, to me it seems really positive? If their contract would be declared null and void, wouldn't they be free of that awful contract (and have the potential to be a couple in public) and maybe sign to a new and better label?

So first off, as I’ve said before, I’m not a lawyer and I have no experience in the music industry, so everything I say is inference based on: i) my general knowledge of the objectives of contracts in general, ii) contractual obligations I’ve seen exercised in my own industry, and iii) observations we’ve made about the inner workings of the entertainment industry over my years in fandom.

TL;DR - take what I say with a grain of salt, please.

So, yes, cleanliness clauses are a thing, and they’re actually pretty standard. They take many forms (from simple brand guidelines to the more extreme version Harry alluded to in BH&G), but at their most benign, they’re usually just a way for brands/organizations/corporations to pragmatically ensure their collaborators align with their image as a brand and don’t do anything to besmirch their name (see: Adidas’ very delayed dropping of Kanye West).

Is that solid, undeniable proof that Harry and Louis were forcibly closeted in One Direction?

Nothing ever really is.

But yes, in the sense that people who know enough about the inner workings of the entertainment industry clearly know what “unsavory” pertains to (considering the image of Harry that was pushed at the time didn’t discourage drinking, drugs, or sex with women by any means, so clearly it wasn’t about making him look like a church boy).

No, in that, as usual, the wording Harry (and most likely, the contract) uses is vague enough not to allude to anything that might, say, break certain anti-Discrimination laws and leave very powerful labels and management vulnerable to legal action.

Which leads me to your next point. I think what people often forget about contracts is that literally 99.9999999% are written with the objective of protecting the company, not the individual. And given what we know about the way the entertainment industry works (you know, the same industry that literally refused to release Ke$ha from her record contract with her assailant), it’s easy to deduce that “null and void” isn’t as straightforward as the wording made it sound.

Rather, what it probably means is that the record label’s obligation to support, promote, and also protect their commodity (the artist) is “null and void”, and now that the artist is no longer seen as a lucrative asset, the label will also no longer see the point in investing in them. But, like I said, contracts are designed to protect the label, and protect their previous investment and any output of that investment in perpetua, which probably means:

I) MINIMUM: a long-standing non-compete clause (so any of the boys who broke their contracts probably would not be able to sign with anyone else or make/own/perform any old/new music for at least enough time for their fanbase and appetite for them as artists to fade),

Or

II) MAXIMUM (and frankly, most common): since contracts are usually based on number of albums produced, being blackballed and shelved by their own label so the artist can’t fulfill their contractual obligations and are bound to their original contract forever.

There are obviously many other details and permutations of the kind of consequences breaking a cleanliness clause could entail, but basically, given how high profile One Direction was and how much money they were making, it’s highly, highly unlikely (read: fucking impossible) that Simon or anyone else from Syco would have willingly let them continue to make music for anyone else, let alone let them negotiate better contracts with any of their competitors.

Swoosh! - Film Review: Air ★★★★

I’m not the world’s biggest sports fan, although give me two weeks of Olympic Games and I’ll watch almost every solo event. I enjoy watching people push past their own limits, seeing the years and years of training right there in the focus of their hard stares and that beautiful release when they stick their landings. Team sports, however, trigger me, sending me right back to gym class where the dumb jocks would knock me down onto the basketball court surface for a rousing game of “Trip-A-Fag”.  I’d always get up, brush myself off and adopt a “You guys!” attitude, but inside, I died just a little bit each time. So is it any wonder I can only stomach the halftime show at the Super Bowl or watch a graceful gymnast execute a perfect dismount as she vies for the gold?

 Despite all of the past trauma, I still enjoy a good sports movie. When Jimmy Chitwood promises to make that final winning shot in Hoosiers, he’s swearing a blood oath to all of us hoping for a better tomorrow. Is it possible to look at the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s entrance steps without thinking of Rocky and the promise the title character represents?

 The same feeling, I thought, must be true for any sports fan who first tried on a pair of Air Jordan sneakers and recognized what it meant to step into the shoes of the most legendary basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan. In Ben Affleck’s fifth feature as a director, Air,  he, with debuting writer Alex Convery, explores the incendiary time in 1984 when Nike sought to sign the then little known basketball player to their company, changing forever the way athletes participated in the profits of products to which they attached their names. It may be your typical David vs. Goliath story, but it’s still a tremendously fun triumph nonetheless.

 The story gets told through the lens of schlubby Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon, a far cry from his 2007 People magazine Sexiest Man Alive days, and relishing every bit of it), a sports marketing executive for Nike who we meet as he scouts players for his company’s flailing product line. He has a career going nowhere fast and needs to prove himself. Desperate to compete with the much more popular Adidas and Converse brands, Vaccaro faces an uphill battle when met with a dwindling budget and CEO Phil Knight (Affleck), who doesn’t think they have much of a future with basketball shoes at all. Vaccaro’s fellow marketing pals, led by the wonderfully deadpan Rob Strasser (Jason Bateman) don’t seem to have one good idea, until one evening, Vaccaro watches footage of a young Michael Jordan, replaying a particular shot over and over. Something about the way Jordan handles himself clues Vaccaro into the fact that he was witnessing a once in a generation player.

 Vaccaro springs into action willing to go all in on Jordan. He confers with fellow exec Howard White (Chris Tucker, delightful here) and decides to break some rules to get what he wants. That includes bypassing Jordan’s Agent David Falk (Chris Messina) and going straight to Michael Jordan’s parents, wonderfully played by real live spouses, Julius Tennon and Viola Davis. While Davis delivers a strong performance and gets to the heart of what really matters, that those who get taken advantage of, be they athletes, artists, writers, or any number or people who are not the 1%, deserve their share of the pie, for me, it’s Messina who nearly walks away with the whole film. His Falk, who spends most of his time on the phone, delivers some of the funniest and filthiest arias of anger I’ve heard since Paul Newman put on his hockey gear in Slap Shot. Matthew Maher also proves memorable as Peter Moore, the designer of the original Air Jordan prototype and who arguably came up with the name. His scenes crackle with the awe of a man who loves his own creativity.

 Air has that uncanny ability to maintain suspense despite the audience already knowing the outcome. The entire film has a natural quality which feels like it was made back in the 1980s, like some long lost journalistic procedural. It has this understated aesthetic thanks to Robert Richardson’s unfussy cinematography, William Goldenberg’s well-paced editing which flies by yet allows for grace notes, Francois Audouy’s perfectly muted production design, and especially Charles Antoinette Jones’ costume design, which hilariously nails every pleat on Damon’s khaki’s and every shade of purple on Affleck’s track suit.

 As we follow Vaccaro on his journey, I started to feel something for him and the other characters. Even though this is a story of a corporation trying to stay afloat and probably screw over a young fledgling athlete in the process, it spoke to me about the dream of excellence, of talent, of Black excellence, of breaking the rules to go after what you want. Every character in this films pops and has a chance to shine. Other standouts include Marlon Wayans in a brief scene as a former coach who dispenses great advice to Vaccaro, and Affleck himself, who brings a prickly yet bohemian quirkiness to his big boss character.

 If I had to gripe about anything, and I hate to because this is one funny and sweet film, it’s the fact that it has a surplus of endings and still misses out on one. Earlier in the story, Bateman’s character sets up something so emotional, I was certain it would get paid off in the end. I imagined it in my head, knowing when I saw it, I would cry. In fact, I get teary-eyed thinking about it even now. Yet, the filmmakers decided not to include it, opting instead to overplay their hand with 10 other endings. Oh well, all is forgiven when you can get a guy like me to stand up and cheer for a sports movie like Air.

One of the best women's college basketball teams in the country is publicly gender critical.

These are the warm-up shirts North Carolina State wore during their exciting comeback win over Notre Dame in the Sweet-16.

Due to uniform regulations, their warm-up shirts have to have the Adidas and NCAA logo. But beyond that, the teams can design their own shirts. NC State chose the original Title IX text, not the text that was amended to include gender identity.

It doesn't get any more gender critical than that.

So, now that you love the WolfPack, watch them work.

I didn't catch this game live so I didn't get to see them walk on to the court with these shirts. But I bet that was a badass moment.

It takes so much guts and so much willpower to pull off a comeback like that. It was a tough and rough game for 40 minutes. They were punched down with a 10 point deficit multiple times. Their mighty 5'4" point guard Raina Perez struggled throughout the game. But in the end, none of that mattered because Raina knew she could win. A steal, a lay up for the lead, a defensive rebound, and two clutch free throws. In those final 20 seconds of perfect basketball, Raina single-handedly got her school to the Elite 8.

I'm impressed, I'm in awe, but I'm not surprised they won. Raina and her WolfPack are defending their right to play on that court. And defense is all about heart.

STILL GOT TIME (1/10)

As promised I’m bringing this verse back, after I’ve made some adjustment and cleaned up some bits etc. Most of it is done, so I hope I’ll be able to update regularly. 

[ I don’t remember the exact wording, but the original prompt for this basically was: mpreg, someone famous ( like an actor or singer), who has to hide his labor, because nobody is supposed to know he's pregnant. ]

STILL GOT TIME (1/10)

The first thing Will notices when he opens his eyes is that the bright Sidney sun is already shining through his window even though it’s only six o’clock.

The second thing is a strange tightening across his midsection, that has his smile twisting into something closer to a grimace of pain as he bites down on his bottom lip to stifle a groan of discomfort as he rolls over. 

A vague memory of waking sometime before dawn, to the sensation of an uncomfortable squeezing around his middle, drifts up through his waking haze. 

He’d pushed the discomfort away, chalked it up to the pizza he had had for dinner, and forced himself to go back to sleep. He had been exhausted, extensive touring, writing, an intense promo circle – all while growing a baby (and hiding that very fact) – have definitely taken its toll.

Now, he lays on his side, stroking a broad palm over his swollen belly and feels a distinct tightening in the stretched muscles. Fucking Braxton Hicks. 

He sighs and shifts on the bed, hauling himself to the edge so he can get a grip and roll up into a sitting position to get his feet on the floor. 

He’s still not used to his changed body, always feels slightly off balance since his center of gravity shifted to accommodate his ever-growing belly. He gasps in shock at the sudden weight and pressure in his pelvis when he finally manages to get upright. His back has already started throbbing again too.

He boosts himself gingerly to his feet, lifting against the under-curve of his rounded belly with one hand, while the other digs into the tense muscles of his lower back. 

He carefully keeps his hands beneath his heavy belly, to alleviate the pressure settled on his hips, as he starts walking.

His back has been killing him for months now, and on top of that he’s been having Braxton hick’s contractions for the last week and it seems like they’re not letting up anytime soon.

The baby feels a lot lower today too, a heavy weight deep inside him, and he’s really not looking forward to spending 16 hours stuck on a tiny cramped airplane. 

There’s no way round it though and he just needs to get through today, and then he’ll finally be home in LA and able to rest.

Hiding the pregnancy has been exhausting: from the morning sickness to the constant tiredness to his ever-growing bump. It has become nearly impossible now that he is nine months along, but at least it’s almost over.

Most of his entourage already left yesterday, right after the show, but Will insisted on another night to rest, and his manager, Nick, finally caved.

Nick is also the only one who knows about Will’s predicament, who encouraged him to keep it under wraps, as to not disappoint the fans and loose them both a ton of money. 

While it’s been incredible hard, Will knows Nick’s right. He’s not married or engaged, in fact he’s not even in a relationship and the media would have a field day about this, calling him a bad role model. Better to hide it for now and figure out a story later.

So, Will tries to ignore the subtle tightening of his stomach muscles around the baby as best as he can, rubs his palm in a soft circle over his rounded belly as it firms up beneath his shirt. It finally fades and he waddles into the bathroom to take a shower and start getting ready with a deep puff of breath.

It’s when he starts brushing his teeth, pressing a fist to his back where a dull throb pulses at his lower spine, that he finds himself cringing against another painful twinge in his belly. It’s a bit more uncomfortable than what he’s used to, but he chalks it up to being even bigger and sleeping weird. Hotel beds are the fucking worst and he has a plane to catch.

He puts out a hand to the wall, to steady himself against any more unanticipated pains, as he made his way back to the bedroom. And just in time too, as the baby gives a big, uncomfortable stretch sending an awful pain through Will’s entire belly. “Mhmm, woooh,” he moans, pressing his other hand to his belly “please calm down!”

He bends down to grab a clean shirt out of his luggage, when his back flares with pain at the motion. He massages at it with his fingers for a bit, trying to ease some of the knots before he bends down again to pull on a pair of black skinny jeans with an elastic waist.

Thankfully he’s carried rather high and small during his whole pregnancy, but even so his belly is way too big for regular pants now. But if he wears two shirts and big sweaters, he’s still able to hide it when slouching. Thank god it’s winter, and loose sports clothes are super in right now.

The tightening starts again, so he carefully starts rubbing circles into his tight skin. His stomach quivers slightly underneath his fingers and feels a bit firmer than before. The pain finally ends, and he goes to fix his hair. 

He feels his belly roll in pain again and grips the counter. “Mhmm. Woooh. Urgh.” He bends forward one hand still against the counter, dropping the other to rub all over his stomach. “What is going on today? Please stop,” he whimpers. He’s not sure what to do.

He’s seen a doctor thrice and had a few consultations with a midwife, Ana, that Nick picked out, but most of them were by phone, due to his hectic schedule. She seemed lovely, but they didn’t get a chance to do much, so he feels really unprepared still.

He has three weeks left though, before he’s due, and Ana is scheduled to come around to his place as soon as he gets back, to actually start coaching him in person. Three weeks is plenty of time, right?

When it’s finally time to go he slides his feet into his adidas, frowning when he realizes the ties have come undone. He attempts to bend, belly falling between his knees, and groans as pain sparks everywhere in his body at the shift. He ties them as quickly as he can, desperate to get up again.

Will studies himself in the floor length mirror next to the door. He smoothens his shirt down over his belly, forcing himself to look. He has carries high for most of his pregnancy, but there is no denying that that’s no longer the case, his belly feels quite heavy and he has to slouch forward quite a bit to hide it when standing. It’s a real strain on his already aching back, but there is no way around it. He pulls a big hoodie over his head, and then, after checking himself in the mirror and still seeing the faint outline of a curve, adds another loose jacket.

He grabs his bag, that he has taken to carrying himself, in case he strategically needs to hold it in front of his belly and heads out the door.
