Ah, the beginning of school. The very first day, the only day where your fellow classmates will dress to impress, and maybe even the only day they’ll be paying attention in class at all. Normally, you felt all jittery on the first day, questions of whether or not your outfit was good enough, or if you had remember everything you needed swirled through your mind. This year, however, you felt way more at ease than usual. It was Junior year, and something felt different, but you didn’t know what.

Your best friend, Annie, came to pick you up from your house twenty minutes early. That was Annie, though, she was always so worried that she would be late to something, that she ended up being early. Through the car window, you could see that she was dressed in her favorite jean skirt, and a new yellow crop-top. Her hair and makeup was done immaculately, as usual. You wondered how early she had to wake up to make that possible.

Settling in the passenger seat, you mumbled a barely coherent, “morning, Annie.” Said girl giggles as she sets off down the road. “You have to wake up, [y/n]. You’re gonna have to, like, go through all your classes and stuff, and you have to be awake for that.”

“Suddenly, I can’t hear,” you commented, just as deadpanned in the voice as you were before her comment. Annie rolled her eyes, but stayed silent for the rest of the ride to school, save for humming along to the radio. It was good for you, who was snuggled against the passenger side window, and nearly back to sleep when she pulled into the parking lot.

“Alright, you really have to get up now, let’s go,” Annie pulled you into an upright position. Your groans of protest had little to no effect on her. After deciding it was better to just bite the bullet and get in there, you opened the car door, and stepped out onto the asphalt.

“Hey Annie, does my outfit look okay?” you asked, as the two of you stepped up onto the sidewalk. You had been a bit iffy on your outfit when you left, and you were still feeling that way. You were wearing a cropped red sweater, your favorite pair of jeans, and white Adidas All Stars with red stripes. The outfit was cohesive, yes, but you were worried that it might be just a little bit too much.

“Girl, you look great,”Annie responded, extreme levels of ‘duh’ in her voice. “We’re gonna be late for homeroom if you don’t hurry your ass up.”

Homeroom was always extended on the first day of school, in order for kids to get acquainted with their schedules, and learn where their lockers were. Being a Junior, you knew your way around the school well enough, and finding your locker was pretty easy. Best part- Annie’s locker was right across the hall, and three lockers to the left from yours. Like most of the other Juniors, what little items you brought to school the first day, were stashed into your lockers quickly, and you had a good twenty minutes to mill around in the hallway before first period.

You decided to spend this time sitting up against your locker, trying to finish the chapter of the book you’re reading. With school starting, you wouldn’t have as much time to read for pleasure, so you were trying to squeeze some in while you still can. Everyone around you was being loud but bearable, minding their own business, and talking, or rather shouting, to their friends. Except for one person, of course.

The famous Genevieve, or Gen, ex-girlfriend of Lacrosse’s very own superstar, Peter Kavinsky. She had a knack for finding people who were minding their own business or wanted to be left alone, and coming to annoy them. You’d had your fair share of incidents with her last year, and you were practically immune to her snide little insults by now. However, you had a feeling that since her and Peter broke up over the summer, she’d be a little more ruthless this year.

“Well, look what the cat dragged in! Future Miss Librarian USA,” Gen commented, arms folded across her chest as she looked down at you. You looked up, meeting her eyes with a dead stare. If she was going to try and intimidate you on the first day, she’d have to know that it wasn’t going to work.

“At least I can read,” you retaliated, closing the book and turning it so that the front cover was facing her, then pointing to the title, you said, “Gen, can you read that for me? Come on, sound it out.” Gen scoffed, rolling her eyes, before fixing you with a bone-chilling scare.

“You might think you’re funny or something, but all of this,” she gesticulated her hands wildly, “is just sad. You’re gonna be a sad, lonely, cat lady librarian for the rest of your life.” You didn’t say anything back to her, mostly because you couldn’t believe she’d fallen into using such bad, childish insults. Were you really supposed to feel insulted over that? It’s like you were in first grade all over again, and she was mad because you took the crayon she wanted.

“Hey, what’s going on over here,” a new voice cut in. You looked to the left of Genevieve, where none other than Peter Kavinsky stood. He had a concerned look etched into his face, and he was looking warily between Genevieve and yourself.

“Yeah, I’m fine. You didn’t have to do that,” you said, nodding in the direction of where Gen went. You had no idea whether they were still at least kind of friends or not, and you didn’t want to tarnish the little bit of their relationship they might’ve had left. Sure, you didn’t like Gen, but you didn’t have a problem with Peter, and you didn’t want to ruin anything for him.

“Yeah, I did. You don’t deserve to have Gen ruin your first day. You’re too nice for that,” Peter responded, and you knew he was sincere from the tone of his voice. You felt a small smile creep onto your face.

“Thanks Peter, really,” you thanked him, looking down.

“Hey, it was nothing,” he waved you off, “maybe we’ll have a class together this year, or something. That would be cool.”

“Yeah, well, goodbye-” you started, and were cut off by Annie calling your name. The bell rang, and you turned away from him, waving slightly as you walked towards Annie. 21. Tag Los Angeles

Für den heutigen Freitag haben wir uns fürs Shopping das „Citadel-Outlet“ vorgenommen. Dieses erreichten wir wiederum mit Uber. Wozu man sagen kann, dass wir hier von A nach B immer mit Uber gefahren sind. Im Outlet fanden wir alle bekannten Marken wie Nike, Adidas, Puma, Levis etc. vor. Zum Glück hatten wir schon einige gute Schnäppchen gemacht, als mitten im Kaufrausch ein lauter Knall ertönte und auf einmal alle Lichter ausgingen. Alle Kunden mussten daraufhin an der Kasse ihre Einkäufe liegen lassen und die Läden verlassen. Die Security gab nach einiger Zeit den Hinweis, dass es sich um einen Stromausfall handelt und nicht sicher sei, wann und ob die Läden wieder öffnen. Nach ca. einer halben Stunde Wartezeit bekamen wir Gewissheit, dass die meisten Shops heute geschlossen bleiben müssen. Manuel hatte Glück und konnte bei Puma noch ein Shirt bar bezahlen. Auf der Rückfahrt zum Hotel machte unser Taxifahrer einen kurzen Abstecher für uns vorbei am Haus, dass Drehort für den Film „The fast and the furious“ war. Zurück im Hotel machten wir uns für das abendliche Basketballspiel der Los Angeles Lakers gegen die Oklahoma City Thunder fertig. Die Tickets hatten wir weit im Vorfeld schon in Deutschland gekauft. Leider konnten wir zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht wissen, dass die Lakers die Playoffs verpassen werden. Trotzdem war nach Ankunft vor der „cryptocom-Arena“(ehemaliges Staples-Center) sehr viel Trubel. Ein Meer von gelb und lila gekleideten Fans hielten sich vor der Halle auf und machten beispielsweise Fotos mit ehemaligen Spielern, kauften Fanartikel oder versuchten extra aufgestellte Körbe zu treffen, um etwas zu gewinnen. Manuel hat für diesen Anlass sein fast 20 Jahre altes Kobe Bryant-Trikot angezogen. Dieser Spieler ist die Vereinslegende schlechthin und einer der besten Basketballspieler aller Zeiten. Leider ist er viel zu früh von uns gegangen. In der Halle angekommen bekam jeder Zuschauer dann noch ein extra Trikot von einer anderen Vereinslegende. Die Nummer 33 von Kareem Abdul Jabbar, der an diesem Tag seinen 75. Geburtstag feierte und in der Halbzeitpause vor der ca. zu 2/3 gefüllten Halle geehrt wurde. Bevor wir unsere Plätze in der obersten Reihe einnahmen, holten wir uns noch etwas Proviant an einem der unzähligen Verkaufsstände. Dort musste Conny unglaubliche 18 Dollar für eine Dose Bier blechen, weil kein Preis zu sehen war und ihm die Dose schon vor dem Bezahlen einfach geöffnet wurde. Wie auch schon vor 4,5 Jahren in Orlando, wurden wir auch diesmal in einer Hightech-Halle durch eine große Show unterhalten. Hier wird einfach jede Spielunterbrechung dazu genutzt, um dem Publikum etwas zu bieten oder Werbung an den Mann zu bringen. Leider fehlte auf Seiten der Lakers der aktuelle Superstar LeBron James aufgrund einer Verletzung. Als dieser jedoch kurz vor Spielbeginn die Halle betrat um seine Mitspieler zu unterstützen, jubelten ihm alle Zuschauer frenetisch zu. Kurz darauf erhoben sich alle Zuschauer und es ertönte wie vor jedem NBA-Spiel die Nationalhymne der USA. Das Spiel an sich war relativ ausgeglichen, wobei die Lakers während der Partie unter großem Beifall die spektakuläreren Punkte machten und somit letztendlich verdient mit 120:101 gewannen. Nach diesem tollen Erlebnis brauchten wir aufgrund der großen Menschenmassen allerdings einige Zeit, um wieder zurück in unser Hotel zu kommen.
