Hey, I’m Adithya, a 16 year old figuring his way out in the world of apps. No, I’m not a developer and no, I’m not a blogger either. Yet here I am writing a blog about my journey in creating an app.

A couple of months ago we all witnessed something the world has never seen. A full-blown, all-out lockdown. The world stopped moving. Everything became stationary. Frustration became common place – businessmen, employees scared of a mass lay off, health workers, the government and even people who couldn’t wait to get out of their homes just to hang out with their friends. The Coronavirus affected every aspect of every single person’s life. Mine too. I had just finished my 10th grade board exams and couldn’t wait for the IPL season to start or go out with my friends or even just have a nice dinner in a restaurant with my family. Everything went down the drain. The initial days after the lockdown were not so scary because it looked like as if the government was in control of everything. There was high optimism among people that this would soon end and we would return to normalcy in no time.

My lockdown period began with pursuing new hobbies. I began to learn some basic code and exercised on a regular basis as well. I decided to try and improve myself as a whole too. So even though I hated reading books, I took up reading and read at least an hour everyday. I was selective in what I read and almost finished 6 books in those 2 months. Books really helped me look at everything in a more critical but positive manner. I read more entrepreneurial books than anything else and this was probably one of the biggest changes I made to my mindset. I started seeing everything from a business point of view but not only with a commercial ambition but to help people as well.

A global pandemic couldn’t have posed a better time for me to help the economy and social life get back on track. I would go to bed just thinking of how I wasn’t doing anything to improve this new world view I had developed. I was also frustrated about not doing anything to help anyone during this pandemic. Shops, malls, cinema halls, salons, etc were all shut and the economy had taken a huge hit. There were two kinds of victims- people who were affected by the virus and people who were affected by the pandemic. What does this mean? There were people whose livelihoods were at risk and there were people whose lives were at risk. Even if I could help one of the two communities, I’d feel good about myself.

I’d think about this the whole day and it would always be at the back of my mind. One day, I was watching some news on the TV and I just had this EUREKA moment in my head. I stood up, went to my room, thought about this the whole night but didn’t tell my parents or my elder sister. Reason being I genuinely believed this idea had some serious potential and I did not want to mess this up. I am known in my family for giving some outrageous ideas( a shower speaker, a franchise for EV charging stations, etc) so I wanted to make sure this wasn’t ridiculed the second it was pitched to them.

People were frustrated by being locked up in their homes and wanted a small taste of normalcy back in their lives. What if I could bring in a layer of safety such that people would be more than willing to come back out again? I knew this was going to be an idea that either went BOOM or BUST. There’s no way we would know unless we tried right?

He called his father, Jerome, a software engineer at Google working in London, and the two set to solving it. “We like those kinds of little challenges,” Mr. Abela said. “We didn’t think we would be able to solve it, but we would at least try.” Collaborating via teleconference, they downloaded the video, isolated images showing the fully inflated parachute and started piecing together the bits. So did others around the world, trading insights on Twitter and forums on Reddit. “It’s just exciting that NASA is putting these little puzzles in their missions,” said Adithya Balaji, a graduate student in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh who independently tackled the problem. Mr. Balaji compared the parachute puzzle to a couple of science fiction movies: “Contact,” where a scientist played by Jodie Foster unravels an alien message, and “The Martian,” where Matt Damon’s character Mark Watney communicates with people back on Earth using a similar code. “I think that it’s exciting that real life can be sometimes even more exciting than the movies,” Mr. Balaji said. But a failure of a prototype parachute intended for future missions spurred engineers to improve the design. While watching video of a high-altitude test of the new parachute for Perseverance, Dr. Clark noticed that the checkerboard pattern on the canopy made it difficult to track how individual portions of the parachute unfurled and inflated. Because Perseverance would be outfitted with video cameras, Dr. Clark wanted a pattern that would be visually distinct. That, in turn, provided an opportunity “to have a little fun with it,” he said. He asked Matt Wallace, a deputy project manager for the mission, for permission. “I told them OK,” Mr. Wallace recalled. “Just make sure it was appropriate and couldn’t be misinterpreted.” The 70-foot-wide parachute consisted of 80 strips of fabric radiating outward from the center to form a hemisphere-shape canopy, and each strip consisted of four pieces. Dr. Clark thus had 320 pieces to work with. Some of his ideas would have required additional colors, but that could have threatened the parachute’s integrity if untested dyes weakened the fabric fibers. “We were unwilling to go to a cloth that was dyed in a color that we had never used before,” Mr. Wallace said. Even a pattern of just orange and white, the two colors of previous parachutes, raised potential issues. “There’s all kinds of second-guessing questions,” Dr. Clark said. “Like could having more white than orange, or vice versa, mean that the parachute was going to warm up differently and maybe that would change its behavior?” After all, mission managers would have been embarrassed if they had to explain how they lost a $2.7 billion mission because a parachute engineer had sneaked in a secret message. But Dr. Clark’s analysis showed no ill effects, and the plan went forward. Until this week, only about half a dozen people knew about it. When computer scientists see something in black and white — or, in this case, orange and white — they think of binary code, the 1s and 0s that are the language of computers. That was the first clue that the puzzle solvers pursued on Monday. For each orange section on the Perseverance parachute, Maxence Abela and his father wrote down a 1, and for each white section, they assigned a 0. That translated into a long string of 1s and 0s. They thought that perhaps the digits could be rearranged into a picture, like the message that scientists broadcast in 1974 from the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico to tell distant alien civilizations of humans on Earth. “We couldn’t find anything that looked like anything,” Mr. Abela said. They tried breaking up the digits into groups of 8 — a common practice used in computer programming — but that too yielded gibberish. Then the elder Mr. Abela noticed that the digits seemed to fit in groups of 10. “Every 10 bits, there would be three zeros in a row,” Maxence Abela said. That, they decided, was not a coincidence. Still, the resulting numbers did not make sense until they realized they had read the 1s and 0s in the wrong direction, anticlockwise instead of clockwise. When they wrote down the digits in the opposite order, the 10-digit chunks of binary code translated into small numbers, which could then be assigned to letters. The number 1 corresponded to the letter A, the number 2 was B, 3 was C, 4 was D and so on. The message on the inner three rings: “DARE MIGHTY THINGS.” Mr. Abela posted on Twitter his answer at 4:36 p.m. Eastern time, about two hours after Mr. Chen had dropped his cryptic hint during the news conference. This is a credo often cited at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, which built and operates Perseverance. It comes from “The Strenuous Life,” a speech by Teddy Roosevelt in 1899: “Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” There were still some numbers and letters in the fourth ring that neither Abela could make sense of. Those turned out to be the longitude and latitude of the NASA center: 34°11’58” N 118°10’31” W. “If you look in Google Earth, if you type in those coordinates, I think you’re about 10 feet from the door of the JPL visitor center,” Dr. Clark said. In the evening, Adam Steltzner, the chief engineer for Perseverance, posted an annotated diagram explaining the solution. The parachute was not the only fun that the builders of the Perseverance rover had. Eagle-eyed observers spotted a series of drawings that represented the five rovers NASA has sent to Mars, from the small Sojourner in 1997 to Perseverance now. A plaque that will be used to calibrate one of the rover’s main cameras includes patches of colors, but there are also whimsical drawings that include DNA, a rocket and a dinosaur. On the edge of the calibration plaque is an inscription: “Are we alone? We came here to look for signs of life, and to collect samples of Mars for study on Earth. To those who follow, we wish a safe journey and the joy of discovery.” Elsewhere on the rover is a piece of a Martian meteorite that landed on Earth and is now back on its original planet. That is to be used for calibration of SuperCam, an instrument that uses lasers and a camera to identify carbon-based molecules and other compounds in rocks and soil. (Before going back to Mars, the same well-traveled rock made a round-trip visit to the International Space Station.) Also on Perseverance are three small chips with the names of 10.9 million people stenciled on them, part of NASA’s efforts for the public to participate in its robotic missions. A more solemn addition was an aluminum plate that honors hardships of those affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The practice of adding fun or solemn pieces to spacecraft is not new. In NASA jargon, it is called “festooning.” The two Voyager spacecraft that are now in interstellar space have discs full of images and sounds of Earth. Two earlier Mars rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, had parts made from the wreckage of the World Trade Center. The New Horizons spacecraft, which flew past Pluto in 2015, carries some of the ashes of Clyde Tombaugh, the astronomer who discovered that world. TALLERKEN

Seeking to accentuate the most beautiful elements of the surrounding landscape: the forests and the water, while achieving minimum intrusion and maximum accordance with the topography and the magic of the place, a unique space is generated. A deep watery plate translucent and reflective is gently placed on the natural upper plateau of the topography, capturing and bringing in the changing landscape to feel embraced.

The magnitude of the plate consists of a horizontal bold element that, instead of imposing itself on the site, captures its liquid and green atmosphere and generates an aqueous haven of silence and serenity, sheltered from the city, yet open to the world. All spaces are designed as a refuge inside the landscape, a hidden world to be discovered, surrounded by lush vegetation and a liquid atmosphere of lights, colours, and reflections.

Two key programmatic strategies to activate the city are used, offering a destination to go and go again: a) the Dome: the immensity of this space allows to accommodate every kind of design exhibition and future museum typology, b) the Hub: flexible spaces of encounter and creativity that promote dialogue and sociability.

A landmark visible from afar, the museum is settled in an iconic piece that follows the contours of the topography, opening out towards the fjord; approaching, the visitor discovers a more intimate scale, close to the archetypal Norwegian habitat.

Free access to the park and large bay windows give a view of the interior of the building and play the attractive and stimulating role of a destination and meeting place for all audiences.

The diversity of interior volumes, modular and scalable, opens the museum to all exhibition opportunities, all sizes of objects, all types of events (training, conference, workshop, etc.).

Crossing volumes that are very open to the landscape or on the contrary in a black box, the inside pathway offers the conditions for a sensory experience highlighting the sound, olfactory or light design.

The program is enriched with furnished accommodation allowing an intimate experience of design during a stay.

The metallisk hvit Möbius, meaning “metallic white” in Norwegian, resonates with the glowing white snow on top of the mountains and lake. Our proposal is conceived as a continuous never ending infinite Möbius loop, representing the concept of time where the visitor gets a feeling of “floating” in space. Together, the museum structure, urban forest and connecting waterfront plazas form an ensemble, a new landmark and let you immerse into the futuristic world of Bygdøy island.

Design is born out of our desire to elevate our experiences, both practically and emotionally. Design encourages us to explore and experiment, and thus transcend into an improved world.  Human ability to use design as an expressive system and a process to develop solutions is evident all the way from primitive times. Despite its diversity w.r.t to different areas of intervention, design is omnipresent and invisible.

Whether we’re aware of it or not, design surrounds us, and can be found in the tiniest of places and forms. It’s three-pronged impact: experiential, aesthetic and social has created various styles and movements throughout history which has had a profound impact on the growth of men and society in general.

The aim of this competition is to create an iconic ‘Museum of Design’ in Oslo that would celebrate the domain of design and become a fitting tribute to the field as a whole. Design has been largely neglected as a museological domain worldwide, apart from some certain sections in major art museums dedicated to individual designers. Entering into a new decade, the ‘Museum of Design’ must generate awareness and reflect upon the journey of design through time. The Museum of Design must become an archive and a hub for development of future design movements and innovations.

Museum of Design should encompass all the major design areas under a single envelope and make a powerful statement. The Museum of Design should narrate the process and effort behind design in a powerful manner so that people can observe and appreciate its profound impact. The museum should create a timeline w.r.t specific design fields where people can experience its impact on society. The spatial and architectural manifestation of the journey/story should be an immersive experience for people so that they can absorb the information easily.

Design Museum must be a place where people who love design can meet. It should become an architectural icon for the city of Oslo where people can converge and talk about design. The museum should also insert learning centers and convention areas for biennale etc. apart from its usual archival programs so that it can give back to the people of the city
