Hi, I'm hoping to become an administrative assistant and was wondering if you might have any advice? I have an informal interview tomorrow with a lady who may be willing to be my point of reference while applying for a job at a university and if all goes well and I move on to the next steps, I'd love to have a better idea of what to do or say.

One of the best things you can do is emphasize your ability to deal with ambiguity and prioritize. This is role is an odd one in the business world, because it’s a hybrid of a task-y job and an intuitive self-directed job.

Say you’ll have a ton of things to get done one day. Some of them need to be completed before you can start the others, some are one-off type tasks, some are daily, and only about half of them have all of the information you need. Most of them have to be completed in certain time frame.

Now create a scenario to explain how YOU would approach this to the person interviewing you. Would you make a list? How do you find out more information about a requested task? What if your manager isn’t available and the deadline is in an hour?

Make up a couple of scenarios before you go, and talk them through to yourself. I don’t know what you’ve done for work in the past, but don’t be afraid to use that as inspiration. It’s your experience! That’s good stuff.

And if you get nervous about scheduling meetings and stuff, just remember that weeks still have seven days, no matter what.
