Cornwall’s Random Card of the Day #501: Adrix and Nev, Twincasters
Tumblr media
Adrix and Nev, Twincasters is a mythic rare from some Commander thing.
Both blue and green get cloning, ironically blue gets it more despite being the weakest creature colour(on paper). Green generally only gets to do this when associating with blue, though. Shame. This is one of those gold cards which could be hybrid, but at a higher cost. So the gold here is getting your total mana value down. Also can we talk about these merfolk? I had to kinda look at the typeline to see that they were merfolk. They coulda just been humans with a dye-job by looking at them. Wizards, stop being cowards, bring back tailed merfolk.

A New Shape Anew
I got the Quantum Quandrix command deck (want to pick up the others yet, and maybe a couple spare), but Spawning Kraken deserves a deck around it. So I looked through old cards, thought about old strategies, and remembered some past wisdom that perhaps you’ll appreciate as well.
Tumblr media
Shape Anew isn’t expensive these days, under 50¢ according to MTGGoldfish. But in its heyday it was up to $2. For the price of one artifact, you could get another artifact onto the battlefield. The riddle this card asks is how to make sure you have an artifact to sacrifice, but also ensure you get something better in return? The trick then, and why it relates to Quandrix, is tokens. By creating token artifacts, and having few (or even just one) artifact in the deck, Shape Anew basically becomes a second copy of the card (and often a cheaper one if you play your cards right ;) ).
Tumblr media
Master’s Call (and many cards since then, especially since the introduction of Gold, Treasure, Clues..) is not an artifact, but creates artifacts. So if you use Shape Anew, it won’t stop at Master’s Call. It enables your combo but doesn’t limit it. So you keep revealing cards until you end up at, say, Blightsteel Colossus, the only artifact in your deck.
Tumblr media
Arcum Dagsson and Jalira, Master Polymorphist both fill a similar role to Shape Anew, allowing it to be used multiple times, but at the cost of dies-to-removal. Arcum Dagsson makes an artifact creature into a non-creature artifact, and Jalira makes any other creature (can be an artifact, but isn’t required) into a non-legendary creature. Because I want to get Spawning Kraken out of this, Jalira meets my needs pretty perfectly.
Tumblr media
So, we’ve got a couple ways we can take our next steps. There are 15 Legendary creatures that are Kraken, Leviathan, Octopus, or Serpent (not including Orvar, the All-Form or other cards that don’t actually say one of these four). Of those 15, one has Red, one has White, two have Black, and another four (five if you include the one with Red) have Green in their color identity. If you go mono-Blue, Jalira can be your commander, but it means your deck has even less creatures in it... And Koma, Cosmos Serpent creates a 3/3 Serpent on EACH upkeep, not just your own! So there’s still some strong reason to include Green. Mono-blue can play Sakashima’s Will, to get plenty of the Spawning Kraken triggers (since each one both is a Kraken, and would see itself and any other creatures that deal combat damage), and you can have Jalira as your commander to get Spawning Kraken out turn 5 with counters or even sooner. But adding in Green you could alter large portions of your deck: with an Edric, Spymaster of Trest build, you focus on having your creatures land damage, even if it’s just in small amounts, drawing cards and getting Krakens; Esix, getting tokens that become the best creature you have for the situation; Adrix and Nev, Twincasters, giving you even more Krakens from Spawning Kraken... and you are building a deck with mostly tokens to get the Spawning Kraken out, right?
Once you do decide on which colors and get a better idea of what commander and tactics you’ll use, look at other legendary creatures available to you. If you’re playing Green, maybe add in Yisan, the Wanderer Bard for all those expensive Legendaries, or maybe being in Blue you want to use Quest for Ula’s Temple. Either way, Spawning Kraken definitely got my gears a turnin’ for deck ideas, and here’s hoping you feel the same!

That is my face when running a test of the unfinished deck I managed to break shit.  When you are copying an Adrix and Nev, Twincaster each turn and get to the point where when one token is generated the number of tokens generated is 2 to 32765th power.... There were a lot of tokens.  A lot of copies of Adrix and Nev in play.

You Should be Playing #11 - Phantom Steed
Phantom Steed is probably not a good card. 4 mana is a lot to ask for a 4/3 with flash.
But man, this card is flexible, fun, and you should be playing more of him.
Phantom Steed is a swiss army knife card. While the body isn't doing anything for us, the ability is the glue that holds a ton of different potential strategies together.
The first we should look at are blink decks. This is kind of the most obvious. Decks like Brago and Roon are already chock full of value EtB creatures. At the easiest level, Phantom Steed lets us rebuy these effects. Even if you lose the Steed on attack, you get two instances of the ETB trigger (once from the token entering, and a second when the original creature comes back).
The second interesting approach is to abuse enter the battlefield effects. I'm not talking about Wood Elves here. What I want to do is beef up my army with cards like Ogre Battledriver. I want to burn face with Purphoros. I want to ramp out with Alena Kessig Trapper!
The opposite is true too. You can do massively powerful things when creatures leave play. Phantom Steed will give you plenty of Blood Artist triggers, but we can double down here by creating copies of cards that has sac abilities on them. Sakrua-Tribe Elder is already dumb - getting to trigger multiples is even better.
The final archetype Phantom Steed shines in is tokens. See everything above and then double it with Parallel Lives. Intangible Virtue gives you some extra beef. Twilight Drover gives you a way to turn the temporary into a long-game engine.
On top of all this, Phantom Steed has the side-effect of protecting your most important creature or permanently steal a card you've Threatened.
Although it is a 4/3 for 4, Phantom Steed deserves a lot more play than he's getting.
Pairs nicely with:
Eternal Witness
Adrix and Nev, Twincasters
Roon of the Hidden Realm
Karmic Guide
Zara Renegade Recruiter
Kamiz, Obscura Ocultist
Aven Riftwatche

You should be playing #8 - Idol of Oblivion
What's the going rate to draw four cards? 4 mana? 6 mana? How about 2?
For some reason, Idol of Oblivion is shockingly undervalued. It's not bursty, but if you want steady, consistent card draw it's the best.
Let's compare to the poster child for slow, steady card advantage - Phyrexian Arena.
Mana Cost:
Area: 1BB
Idol: 2
Winner: Idol by a county mile. Not only is it a full mana cheaper - which means an entire extra card - but it is also colorless. Phyrexian Arena needs a heavy black commitment to get down on turn three. Idol is always there for you on two.
Draw Power:
Arena: You get one card every turn, at the cost of one life.
Idol: You get one card every turn you generate a token.
Winner: Arena, but only ever so slightly. You will always draw a card with Arena, but there are some occasions where you might not with Idol - but not if you build your deck right.
Incidentals:
Arena: Arena lets you do some stuff with loss of life. It's not much, but it's a thing I guess.
Idol: Artifacts have a lot more opportunity to be destroyed in commander games. You technically can make a 10/10 token with Idol, but I've never been in a position where that is a better option than drawing more cards.
Winner:
Assuming you make any number of incidental tokens a turn, Idol of Oblivion is the hands-down winner. It used to be a challenge to do this, but these days everyone is making token. So take a look at your deck, if you've got clues, food, treasures, saprolings, blood, squirrels, etc, you should really be playing Idol of Oblivion.
Pairs nicely with:
Lonis Cryptozoologist
Adrix and Nev Twincasters
Prosper Tomebound
Osgir the Reconstructor
Cadira Caller of the Small
Jan Jansen Chaos Crafter
Ghired Concolave Exile
Toggo Goblin Weaponsmith
Chief Jim Hopper
Loyal Apprentice
Elspeth Suns Champion
Endless Ranks of the Dead
Anointer Priest
