GUIDE TO SCHOOL
Hii! It’s me Kia, and today I’ll be giving you a run down on how I’m improving in school! For context : I’ve always struggled a bit with school but recently I’ve been getting much better at it, I have ADHD which makes it harder to pay attention, but I’ve improved, and here’s how I did it!
Remember : you’re doing this for your future self, you can do this!! Make yourself proud, do something great! You don’t need to study every single day for hours on end, studying can be 15-20 minutes, or however long you want it to be!
Basics overall instructions : minimize your distractions! Keep your phone in another room when studying, get an app that locks your social media apps until a certain time, and turn off your notifications, have a cozy study spot, choose calm peaceful music without lyrics! Active learning is better than passive learning, but mixing them both together is chefs kiss, one day do passive learning, and the next active learning, put what you’re reading into action!! Don’t just let it sit in your head. Practice! Like I said, active learning is amazing! you can practice anywhere, in the line for your coffee, grab your flashcards and do em! Just like that you’ll do the 30 minutes of flashcards you wanted to! Take a look at mock exams and try doing those! Take notes in an organized matter, that makes sense to you!! Explain the material in words that make sense to you. Don’t cram the night before a test, you won’t remember most of it, instead study days in advance, and the night before the test, review the subject!! but most importantly.. listen to your teachers!! Try to pay attention in class, what I do to help me with my ADHD is get a piece of paper, a pen, and scribble on it while my teacher talks, or I use a squishie, or a putty! Something to get me preoccupied as I try to listen to the teachers.
Note taking : when taking notes first do them quickly in class, just try to get all the information word for word. Then, rewrite them: make it more organized, highlight the important parts, add an example, brief and more simplified summary.
Study methods I personally love : My favorite method for English is the 3-2-1 recall method, read it 3x, say it out loud 2x, and write it on paper 1x. Active recall I use flash cards, or I either ask my friends to make random questions on the subject/material I’m learning, and if they’re not there? I ask ChatGPT this prompt “Please create flash cards and quiz questions for me on __”. Feynman method explain the subject as if you were talking to a fifth grade, simplifying it! Blurting, quickly read over your textbook or study guide, and write down as much as you can remember then reopen the textbook/study guide and compare what you wrote on your notebook, to the text in the textbook/study guide!
Math : this subject wasn’t exactly my strong suit, but what I did to make my life easier is relearn everything I learned in middle school-elementary school, yes everything, even addition and subtraction. By doing that I’ve gotten a better understanding, and grasp on what I’m doing now in algebra, luckily for me I have a friend whom is a tutor, and she often offers to tutor me every now and then! Then I’d apply what I learned irl, usually to figure out how much my total or what the discount would be if I’m at.. Sephora or any other store, I would whip out my trusty calculator, but instead I started calculating it myself, active learning(Reading then engaging in the subject and practicing the subject) is better than passive learning(only reading the things you’re learning), math is a subject you have to pay attention to and practice, use IXL or ask your friends to come up with random equations for you, and practice doing those daily!
English : I’d say this is a fairly easy subject, but due to it being easy I’d underestimate it, and the projects assigned, “oh I’ll just do this “Later tonight..” and that’s how I ended up with 10 missing assignments and an F. So my advice for getting better at English? Stay on top of your work, don’t underestimate it! What I did to improve this English procrastination was call my friend for 45 minutes, and we’d do a “silent study”, in the silent study we’d both shut up, and work on our homework, and if we needed help or feedback we’d do a quick wave to each other. Now for improving in writing etc.. is because of a tip I got from an older friend, she told me to write essays on things I like! Likeee.. I’d write an essay on the Percy Jackson series after I’d finish a book, a summary on what happened, how it made me feel.. etc, on the topic of books, reading can also help you heavily improve in English.
Science : to improve in science I make acronyms, lots and lots of acronyms to help with my memorization, an example: “Ricky is left handed” for reactants are on the left. Similar to science I went all the way back to the basics, and relearned them. I started with grasping the core concepts (Laws of motion, atomic structure etc..), then I’d relate this to real life, photosynthesis in plants, gravity affecting objects etc..

As a sophomore student studying Mathematics and Statistics, my academic journey has been both challenging and rewarding. I have always had a deep appreciation for problem-solving and logic, which is what drew me to these fields in the first place. The foundation I built in my freshman year helped me understand the theoretical aspects of mathematics while giving me the tools to approach complex problems with a statistical mindset.Now, as a sophomore, I find myself diving deeper into more specialized areas, like linear algebra, statistical inference, and multivariable calculus. The material is more advanced, but my passion for these subjects has only grown. I've learned that the beauty of mathematics lies not just in finding answers, but in the process of discovery and critical thinking. Statistics, on the other hand, has shown me the power of data and its ability to reveal hidden patterns that can inform decisions and predictions.Being a sophomore means I’m beginning to connect the dots between different concepts and developing a more holistic understanding of my field. While there are still tough days when the formulas seem to blur together or the numbers don’t add up, the excitement of uncovering the solutions keeps me going. The support of professors and classmates makes a huge difference, and I feel more confident in tackling the challenges ahead.I’m looking forward to the rest of my time in this program, knowing that with each year, I’m growing closer to achieving my goals and perhaps even making my mark in the world of mathematics and statistics. when I was a senior in high school I was in Advanced Algebra. I don't remember if that was the proper name for the class but whatever. it was the Algebra class that you got placed in if you scored high enough on the ACT and hadn't selected a specific other math course. there was only 9 people in the class including me.
the structure of the class was that the teacher would go over the content of a chapter and show us how to do the math, we'd be given a specific set of problems from the textbook to do, and 2-3 days of class to do them. we could do them at home or in class, and because it was a small class we were encouraged to help each other with the material. then we'd have a test every few chapters. while the teacher was very cool and generally everyone liked him, he was also from I think Algeria and had a heavy accent and us American teenagers sometimes had some minor trouble understanding him. so I ended up helping my classmates A Lot.
another thing about when I was in my senior year is that my stepmom was very abusive. there were often times when I was allowed to do Literally Nothing at home (including reading and drawing). so my most common strategy was to do Zero Work in class, and spend it drawing or reading or whatever I felt like doing that I was totally allowed to do at school but couldn't do at home. and then when I went home, I'd do the homework. because it was ALL I could do. and Mr. Agyemang was cool with it, bc I clearly understood the material enough to help my peers with it and usually got 100% on the assignment when I turned it in. (I also explained the situation to him. he was chill about it.)
the issue arose during the few times when I WASNT grounded from Being Alive, so when I got home I had other things I could do besides homework. and lemme tell you: when youre autistic and have ADHD and your choices are either "do math homework (work)" or "stare at wall (BORING)", math homework looks pretty damn appealing. but when your choices are "do math homework (work)" or "play solitaire and listen to Paramore on your laptop (enjoyable)", the homework becomes impossible. like pulling teeth.
the first time there was an assignment I just straight up hadn't finished, Mr. Agyemang was so disappointed in me and I felt so bad. cuz it's not like I didn't know the stuff. even if I zoned out while he was teaching, I could usually figure out from the textbook what I was doing, and if I still wasn't sure I could ask him or one of my other classmates to clarify some things. so it wasn't an issue of me knowing how to do the work, it was an issue of me just not doing it. which, for an undiagnosed ADHD haver, isn't a great look.
I had to adapt my strategy and do the work during class so that I could have fun at home. and it took maybe a little longer to figure that out than I'd care to admit. but it also meant Everyone knew when I was MegaGrounded so that was weird. and still nobody bothered to check out what the issue with my brain was. I think if been prescribed Vyvanse at 8 years old instead of 28 years old I could've at least finished college but. nobody guessed the Smart Girl could possibly have brain issues, they just thought I was Weird and also Lazy (and probably Lying about being so Forgetful bc i was so Smart)

Never in my life will I tell anyone else that their feelings or experience with homeschooling are incorrect or invalid or wrong. What I will say is that homeschooling can be and is done right, and that I think I was lucky enough to experience it myself.
My mother was a kindergarten teacher before she had kids, and worked as a nanny once I was born so she could stay with me more. By the time I was ready for kindergarten (my birthday is in August, I was barely 5) we were living in the middle of nowhere and I would have had an hour round trip bus ride every day. Our state had few laws prohibiting homeschooling, and this was literally what my mom's degree was in, so she just taught me.
We moved a couple years later, and by the time we hit the upper years of my mom's ed degree we had enrolled in the local school district's homeschooling supervision program. Every year my mother made a list of the curriculum she had chosen for me (and eventually my two brothers) and turned it in to a certified teacher who was assigned to supervise us. We did pretty much anything you can think of. English was separated into reading and writing (so many different books and so many essays oh my god), math (with a textbook fear not), history (my mom pulled out weird Manifest Destiny books out and added extra books from indigenous authors), science (I got my iPod taken away for pretending to do my work when I didn't lmao), and so many field trips and fun things that are so much easier to do when most kids are in school.
We participated in the weekly class that the supervision program offered starting when I was in 5th grade. Every Wednesday afternoon we would spend 3 hours with other homeschooled kids, doing theatre, art, or some kind of history or science project depending on the time of year. The middle and high school groups put on a full play in a semester every year. A few other kids and I who were supervised by the same teacher formed a little club and made our parents let us meet up a second time a week and we got to help make the play sets and generally were little nerds.
In middle school I started taking classes at our public middle school. I was there for math because my supervising teacher had me take a placement test when my mom decided to change math curriculums and they had decided I was ready for Algebra a little early. I also went for choir, because I liked to sing. I ended up taking math at the public school all the way through high school because our district had an advanced math track that let me take Algebra 2, Pre calc, and Calc AB in 3 years and I liked math too much to say no to that. I also took 4 years of Spanish, AP Lang, chemistry, art, theater, and lots of choir.
I had friends at school and I had friends at my homeschool stuff. I got to do a year of history curriculum learning about the early day of the Christian church. My freshman year of high school the writing part of my English curriculum was literally to write a novel. It sounds crazy looking back on it but it was so much fun, and I learned literally so much, which was indeed the point.
When the pandemic hit in the spring of my junior year our public schools all closed for the year. We kept homeschooling. I took all my senior year public school classes from our basement. It was hard, but not all that different than what I did with my other subjects. I started college in the fall of 2021 and discovered that it's really very similar to what I had already been doing. Go learn from the professor. Do your work on your own time. Come back, get feedback, and do it again.
I move in for my senior year of college in a week. There's a lot of discussions about pretty much every aspect of education happening in the world, from the pandemic to asynchronous classes to homeschooling and indoctrination to free lunches. There's a lot of bad homeschoolers out there, and there's a lot of kids who were never taught what they needed to learn to be successful adults. This is just what me and my family did. It definitely shaped me as a person, but as I'm getting older it's becoming less important to my life, which to me signals that my parents and various teachers did a good job.

My geometry teacher is making me special test because I'm very behind. I can't finish or start many of the test. I'm also getting poor sleep. It being my first class isn't too great because i just fall in and out of sleep while he's teaching.
It's very kind of him to make these for me. But I don't think he should be doing that at all.
If I am in the advanced class, and I can't keep up with the advancements, why am I there?.
I understand why the advanced classes are a help to me. I get all of that. It gives me less to do in senior year. But if I fail next year, that's not going to help.
My parents don't know he's doing any of this. They don't know that I'm basically not doing any of my test and need help with every question within my assignments.
Say maybe next year, I get a teacher who isn't this nice. Which is very likely. And they don't follow my accommodation. That's just bad. But my current teacher is really just helping me cheat. My next teacher will not do that.
I really appreciate what he's doing but this going to end up very badly in future.
I do not understand the basic concepts from algebra 2. I didn't get most of it.
I would say after school and have to quit on my test because I didn't understand anything. I couldn't remember anything.
I'd walk away crying in the empty hallways because there was nothing I could do.
I got a 79 and the teacher wouldn't change it to an 80. My mom was upset about that, especially because she was her former student.
I don't want that happening again. What I want the most is just to not have that happen again.
