2017 Reading Challenge 30/52 A Book Set Around A Holiday Other Than Christmas The Thanksgiving Visitor - Truman Capote And that’s 30! A quick short story, about a boy who gets bullied by some asshole child. So the relative he lives with (who seems to have some kind of mental illness) ignores the boy’s wishes, and invites the bully to Thanksgiving. The bully then steals something of the relative’s, but the boy catches him, and then tells everyone about it. The relative tries to lie to cover the bully’s ass from the rest of the family, but the bully admits it. And the boy gets in trouble for being mean to the kid who has been tormenting him all year. What a load of shit. Sorry Truman, at least we’ll always have Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

2017 Reading Challenge 25/52 A Book That’s Been Mentioned In Another Book Paradise Lost - John Milton (Frankenstein)

Ironically, I haven’t read the book that it was mentioned in yet (this year, I’ve read it before).

Boy was this one a slog. Even as an audiobook, I just kept zoning out while I listened. I studied it at uni, and never read it, but it sounded like a really cool story. And I’ve always liked poetry, but this was something else. Not for me.

I’ve started The Bell Jar, but haven’t looked at it in weeks. It’s fairly short though, so I should push through it in one day, whenever that day comes. I might buy up a few audiobooks to listen to at work this week. Gotta at least hit 26 books, but hoping for 30.

We are all living in uncertain times where the only thing certain is change. Most situations affect our routine functioning and demand us to adapt ourselves to that change. How willing are we to embrace big or small changes and adapt? Whenever there is a change around us, there needs to be a change within us, an inner preparation. The change has to start in our mind. If we resist the internal shift, we resist the external change too. It leaves us stressed and unhappy. Instead of sticking to internal comfort zones created due to past experiences or belief systems, let’s cultivate a habit of being able to change our habits. Flexibility increases our ability to adjust and adapt to different people and environments. Using our powers to accept, adjust, accommodate, tolerate, or mould are one decision away. Remind ourselves, I adapt to people and situations and flow with life. Ashtanga often gets an undeserved reputation because people don’t want to be honest about the gap between the posture that is being presented and what their body can actually do on that given day. Unfortunately, two things usually happen, people either force themselves to look like the pose or they quit. Ashtanga is not asking us to do either one. The grounds of the Ashtanga Yoga System is that you learn each posture one by one especially in a Mysore style class. When we get to a posture that is not working with our body, our teacher assesses the reason for this. They will then make the decision to either stop you there or give you an approximation of the posture and let you move on. This is how we stay safe when we practice the Ashtanga Yoga Method and that is the importance of having a teacher as well. It’s definitely easy to obliterate something or someone down. It’s harder to show up and do the work of accepting fault, taking responsibility and working for an attainable solution. The temptation to simply burn it all to the ground and watch it go up in flames, whether this is yourself, your job, your family, your community, or your country is a kind of destructive negativity that we can all fall easily into. Think about how easy it is to complain about something and how hard it is to build something up. We can find fault in anything, everything, anyone and everyone if we look for it. The more that we circulate rumors about others and the more we complain about life, the easier it gets to focus on the negative. Negativity, if left unchecked, can spread like a cancer of the mind.
