MY BARNES & NOBLE VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO UNIONIZE YESTERDAY.
Barnes & Noble Bloomington, IL, is the first store in the Midwest to unionize with the RWDSU! I'm so incredibly proud of my coworkers for holding strong and showing solidarity in the face of anti-union tactics, and very excited to see the contract negotiations begin!

Chernobyl boost as wildlife ‘adapting to zone’ 35 years after horrific nuclear disaster Chernobyl: Radioactive hotspot discovered in Red Forest The catastrophic accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant occurred on April 26, 1986, in the No. 4 nuclear reactor close to the city of Pripyat, in north Ukraine. The event saw 400 times more radioactive material than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki sent into the sky. Locals were evacuated and told to pack enough for three days. Most never returned. But as the abandoned towns in the exclusion zone became overgrown, the vegetation that sprung up in the absence of humans in this area has become a thriving haven for wildlife. In 1998, Ukrainian zoologists released a herd of 30 endangered Przewalski horses into the zone, hoping they would graze on foliage and reduce the wildfire risk. Incredibly, they adapted. Dr Maryna Shkvyria, a researcher at Kiev Zoo, said in 2019: “They’re really using the forests. The Chernobyl disaster occurred 35 years ago (Image: GETTY) The residents in the area were evacuated (Image: GETTY) “We even put camera traps in old barns and buildings and they’re using them to shelter from mosquitoes and heat. “They even lay down and sleep inside – they’re adapting to the zone.” And they are not the only ones. Dr Shkvyria has spent years tracking animals roaming around the area, which includes brown bears, lynx wild boar and a number of rare species of birds. She said: “After 15 years of studying them, we have a lot of information about their behaviour. READ MORE: Chernobyl: Most radioactive parts of UK identified after declassified files showed ‘farce’ Some wildlife has returned to the area (Image: GETTY) “And the Chernobyl wolf is one of the most natural wolves in Ukraine.” She added that wolves “usually” eat natural foods like “livestock, crops and waste food,” but in the zone they are hunting wild prey such as deer and fish. Denys Vishnevskiy started working in Chernobyl 20 years ago to observe the restoration of wildlife. And he is now seeking to transform the exclusion zone into a reservoir for biodiversity. The 43-year-old scientist, who lives and works in Chernobyl town, has been studying nature in the exclusion zone with one of his main areas of focus being on the impact of radiation on animals and their behaviour. DON’T MISSWorld War 3: The single ‘greatest threat to democracy’ [REVEALED]WW3 preparation: Where billionaires are building underground bunkers [PICTURES]China left scrambling over Taiwan independence: ‘We will go to war!’ [NEWS]  The famous abandoned amusement park (Image: GETTY) Amazingly, the expert believes the heightened levels of radiation in the area do not seem to have had a critical effect on them. He stated: “This is a gigantic territory in which we keep a chronicle of nature. “The exclusion zone is not a curse, but our resource ” Public awareness of what happened at Chernobyl has been heightened by a popular and critically-acclaimed HBO mini-series about the disaster and its aftermath, which was also shown on Sky. Tourist numbers doubled in 2019 before the pandemic and the Ukrainian government is now hoping an influx of visitors will return. Horses were released into the area (Image: GETTY) Bohdan Borukhovskyi, Ukraine’s deputy environment minister said yesterday: “Our tourism is unique, it is not a classic concept of tourism. “This is an area of meditation and reflection, an area where you can see the impact of human error, but [where] you can also see the human heroism that corrects it.” The central area of Pripyat has been cleared of trees and shrubs, and even reconnected to the electricity grid. The authorities plan to construct set paths through the ruins so tourists can get close to sights such as the city’s abandoned swimming pool and amusement park. All four of the plant’s reactors are in the process of being dismantled, but this work in itself will not be completed until 2064 at the earliest. Ukraine’s Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko (Image: GETTY) Parts of the site could be radioactive for centuries but levels are now said to be low enough for tourists to safely visit and for scientists to carry out their work. Ukraine still forbids long-term habitation inside the zone, although about 100 people – mainly elderly former residents – are thought to have defied the order and continue to live there. Kiev is also looking to have the exclusion zone listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Culture Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko said: “Chernobyl should not become a wild playground for adventure hunters. “People should leave the exclusion zone with the awareness of the historical memory of this place and its importance for all mankind.” if(typeof utag_data.ads.fb_pixel!=="undefined"&&utag_data.ads.fb_pixel==!0)!function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s)if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function()n.callMethod?n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments);if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0';n.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0;t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)(window,document,'script','https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/fbevents.js');fbq('init','568781449942811');fbq('track','PageView') Source link Orbem News #Adapting #boost #Chernobyl #Disaster #horrific #nuclear #Wildlife #Years #Zone

ONE OF THE NEW HOLIDAY HIRES DURING OUR SHARED BREAK: I keep wasting so much time on Tumblr-- ME: What are your thoughts on Goncharov? THEM *LIGHTING UP WITH DELIGHT*: Oh, I'm SO GLAD everyone's rediscovering one of the greatest, most underrated mob films of all time! ME: RIGHT? That SOUNDTRACK? All the queer vibes? Today I rang up a little boy in FULL cowboy gear. He had the requisite tiny Stetson hat, a bandanna mask, PLASTIC SPURS on his leather boots, and a fringed vest. He was carrying the rattiest, most well-loved stuffed bunny and buying a stuffed wolf. "THESE ARE MY PARDNERS," he growled when I handed the wolf back. (Like, a legit gruff lil growl.)
"He's going through a phase right now," said the mom apologetically.
"He's amazing," I said to her. "You're clearly doing an amazing job. Have fun on the range, buddy!"
"YEAH. *WOLF HOWL*"

Okay I have been thinking about it ever since i read your tags on that ofmd post and I’ve GOT to hear more of this story about the werebear erotica biker. It’s too many vastly different words in order and i’m fascinated lmao
OK, SO:
When I worked at the Barnes & Noble in Peoria, I had a lot of really cool regular customers. But by FAR my fave regular was a gentleman by the name of Sandman.
(Yes, that's his legal name, he had it changed in the 80s, his driver license reads MR. SANDMAN in the first and last name sections.)
And Sandman is:
6'4"
A Vietnam vet with a full white beard, long hair, and a knee brace that squeaks like a rusty hinge with each step.
A biker/Harley enthusiast who attends Sturgis every year (when I left the Peoria store, he gave me a Sturgis shirt to remember him by, and I still sleep in it every winter).
Always dressed in a full length leather duster (which is covered in patches and pins, one of which reads DO NOT MISTAKE MY KINDNESS FOR WEAKNESS) + a leather top hat.
COVERED in tattoos -- no, really, he has cobwebs tatted on his forehead and the back of his hands, stars on his eyelids, and dragons and pin-up gals all over his arms. He once told me about 70% of his body is tattooed.
A devoted fan of shape-shifter erotica, PARTICULARLY werebear erotica.
He would come into Barnes at least twice a week, right as we opened, come over to Customer Service, and ask me to load whatever new paranormal romances/erotica I could find onto his Nook. He's a wonderfully warm, friendly, cheerful man with a booming deep voice -- a total teddy bear, which only makes his interest in werebear smut even MORE apropos. And when he found out I had books available, he promptly ordered all of them, even though he prefers to read ebooks and mine are only available in print. SUCH a lovely man.
I enjoy working at the Bloomington Barnes now, but lemme tell you: I really and truly miss seeing Sandman every week. I haven't heard from him in a couple years, not since the Pandemic started, and I sincerely hope he's thriving (and still reading all of the supernatural romances on offer).
And just in case anyone thinks I'm making this up out of whole cloth, here's a photo of Sandman (from a professional photoshoot he was a part of a decade ago or so):

I made a teen’s YEAR today. They were looking for queer books with their mum, and I sold them Casey McQuiston, the Simon Snow trilogy, a handful of singular titles, AND *all* of my own books. They were SQUEALING with delight as I signed them all to "Ember".
ME: That is a GREAT name. THEM: THANKS. I picked it myself! THEIR MUM: So we'll only ever come in the days that YOU'RE working, you're THE BEST. ME:

TODAY AT WORK
GUY ON THE PHONE: Do you still sell pinball machines? ME: ...Uh, sir, this is a Barnes & Noble. We don't sell pinball machines. GOTP: You did ten years ago! ME (WHO WORKED AT B&N 10 YEARS AGO): Sir, I'm afraid you might have us confused with Dave & Busters? I imagine that they might sell their used machines? GOTP: No! I'm *sure* it was a Barnes & Noble! You ordered it for me through your computer system! It was a baseball pinball machine and it cost $175! ME: I'm afraid nothing is coming up in my system when I search "pinball" as a keyword, save for a hand-held Sonic the Hedgehog pinball game for kids. GOTP: UGH! I'm gonna do some more research on what it was exactly called and then I'm gonna come into your store and SHOW YOU the details and I'm SURE you could find me another one! ME: Alright, sir! You have a nice day.
I just.....

LOOK FOR MY NEXT BOOK: “ON THE BANKS OF BARNES & CHERNOBYL”
So today my Barnes & Chernobyl flooded.
A city water main broke just under the far edge of the building, which sent water gushing through cafe and over about half of the store. The city workers didn't manage to get the main turned off until around 1 -- they had to literally dig up half of the alley with a big fuck-off digger to reach the piping -- and the emergency cleaning crew the regional office mobilized for us didn't get in from Chicago until around 1:30.
So I spent almost 4 hours vainly mopping/dumping out buckets while water continuously flowed into the store. At least we managed to get most of the tables/displays pulled free of the flood. (We have these new things called 'donkeys' and hearing my manager scream, "SAVE THE DONKEYS, THEY'RE BRAND NEW, I DON'T WANT THEM RUINED!" was hilarious. Also, there was one table in mystery, next to cafe, and a coworker asked if we should try to rescue it, and I immediately went, "LEAVE HIM, HE BELONGS TO THE CANYON NOW!" thanks to my obsessive re-watching of The Mitchells Vs. The Machines, lololol.)
We put out SEVERAL signs on/in front of the doors explaining that we were closed, and we STILL had customers banging on the windows -- and walking STRAIGHT INTO THE STORE when we had to keep the doors unlocked for a shop vac. At one point, a trio of elderly folks came inside and started straight for the cafe, SPLASHING THROUGH THE WATER, and I had to shout at them to stop. I'm sorry, but how absolutely oblivious do you have to be to NOT NOTICE YOU'RE WADING THROUGH ANKLE-DEEP WATER??? And that the store would OBVIOUSLY be closed while it was flooded??? Another elderly lady had to inform us, "But my grandson wants a book!" when we tried to shoo her out. *VIOLENT HEAD-DESKING*
What *really* took the cake, tho, was one guy who took a newspaper out of the bundle that had been delivered by the front doors, yanked insistently on said doors, then shoved two dollar bills into my manager's hand when she tried to explain we were closed. "I just need this paper, here's your money!" SIR, WE HAVE NO WAY TO RING YOU UP, WHAT THE FUCK, HOW ENTITLED DO YOU THINK YOU ARE???Anyway, by the time I left at 4, the emergency crew had managed to vac out about half of the standing water and had set up some industrial fans.
Store Manager was optimistic that we'd reopen tomorrow, but I'm off the next two days, so I'll report back on Friday as to what actually happened.
